We present a flexible and efficient ultrafast time-resolved spontaneous Raman spectroscopy setup to study collective excitation and quasi-particle dynamics in quantum matter. The setup has a broad energy tuning range extending from the visible to near infrared spectral regions for both the pump excitation and Raman probe pulses. Additionally, the balance between energy and time-resolution can be controlled. A high light collecting efficiency is realized by high numerical aperture collection optics and a high-throughput flexible spectrometer. We demonstrate the functionality of the setup with a study of the zone-center longitudinal optical phonon and hole continuum dynamics in silicon, and discuss the role of the Raman tensor in time-resolved Raman scattering. In addition, we show evidence for unequal phonon softening rates at different high symmetry points in the Brillouin zone of silicon by means of detecting pump-induced changes in the two-phonon overtone spectrum. Demagnetization dynamics in the helimagnet Cu2OSeO3 is studied by observing softening and broadening of a magnon after photo-excitation, underlining the unique power of measuring transient dynamics in the frequency domain, and the feasibility to study phase transitions in quantum matter.
Time-resolved spontaneous Raman spectroscopy serves as a probe for incoherent quasiparticle and collective excitation dynamics, and allows to distinguish symmetry changes across a photoinduced phase transition through the inelastic light scattering selection rules. Largely unexplored is the role of the Raman resonance enhancement in the time-domain, and the transient interaction between scattering from quasiparticles and collective excitations, with the latter interaction leading to a Fano interference. In this work, we report on the observation of a phonon Raman tensor quench and Fano interfe…
High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy were used to study semimetallic 1T - TiTe2 quasiparticle dispersion and dynamics. A kink and a flat band, having the same energy scale and temperature-dependent behaviors along the G-M direction, were detected. Both manifested at low temperatures but blurred as temperature increased. The kink was formed by an electron-phonon coupling. And the localized flat band might be closely related to an electron-phonon coupling. Ultrafast optical spectroscopy identified multiple distinct time scales in…
We present a direct comparison between resonant terahertz (THz) and nonresonant impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS) excitation of phonon-polaritons in ferroelectric lithium niobate. THz excitation offers advantages of selectively driving only the forward propagating phonon-polariton mode to exceedingly high amplitudes, without complications due to nonlinear processes at the high 800 nm pump fluences used in Raman excitation. At peak-to-peak THz electric field strengths exceeding 1 MV/cm, the ferroelectric lattice is driven into the anharmonic regime, allowing experimental determinatio…
The Raman effect -- inelastic scattering of light by lattice vibrations (phonons) -- produces an optical response closely tied to a material's crystal structure. Here we show that resonant optical excitation of IR and Raman phonons gives rise to a Raman scattering effect that can induce giant shifts to the refractive index and induce new optical constants that are forbidden in the equilibrium crystal structure. We complete the description of light-matter interactions mediated by coupled IR and Raman phonons in crystalline insulators -- currently the focus of numerous experiments aiming to dyna…
Signatures of superconductivity and pseudogap formation in non-equilibrium nodal quasiparticles revealed by ultrafast angle-resolved photoemission
A grand challenge underlies the entire field of topology-enabled quantum logic and information science: how to establish topological control principles driven by quantum coherence and understand the time-dependence of such periodic driving? Here we demonstrate a THz pulse-induced phase transition in Dirac materials that is periodically driven by vibrational coherence due to excitation of the lowest Raman-active mode. Above a critical field threshold, there emerges a long-lived metastable phase with unique Raman coherent phonon-assisted switching dynamics, absent for optical pumping. The switch…
We study the ultrafast quasiparticle dynamics in and below the ZnO conduction band using femtosecond time-resolved two-photon photoelectron spectroscopy. Above band gap excitation causes hot electron relaxation by electron-phonon scattering down to the Fermi level $E_\text{F}$ followed by ultrafast (200 fs) formation of a surface exciton (SX). Transient screening of the Coulomb interaction reduces the SX formation probability at high excitation densities near the Mott limit. Located just below the surface, the SX are stable with regard to hydrogen-induced work function modifications and thus t…
We describe an ultrafast coherent control of the transient structural distortion arising from nonlinear phononics in ErFeO$_3$. Using density functional theory, we calculate the structural properties as input to an anharmonic phonon model that describes the response of the system to a pulsed optical excitation. We find that the trilinear coupling of two orthogonal infrared-active phonons to a Raman-active phonon causes a transient distortion of the lattice. The direction of the distortion is determined by the polarization of the exciting light, suggesting a route to nonlinear phononic lattice …
The quasiparticle spectra of atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and their response to an ultrafast optical excitation critically depend on interactions with the underlying substrate. Here, we present a comparative time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) study of the transient electronic structure and ultrafast carrier dynamics in the single- and bilayer TMDCs MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$ on three different substrates: Au(111), Ag(111) and graphene/SiC. The photoexcited quasiparticle bandgaps are observed to vary over the range of 1.9-2.3 eV bet…
The dynamics of excited electrons and holes in single layer (SL) MoS$_2$ have so far been difficult to disentangle from the excitons that dominate the optical response of this material. Here, we use time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy for a SL of MoS$_2$ on a metallic substrate to directly measure the excited free carriers. This allows us to ascertain a direct quasiparticle band gap of 1.95 eV and determine an ultrafast (50 fs) extraction of excited free carriers via the metal in contact with the SL MoS$_2$. This process is of key importance for optoelectronic applications that…
We present a complementary experimental and theoretical investigation of relaxation dynamics in the charge-density-wave (CDW) system TbTe$_3$ after ultrafast optical excitation. Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observe an unusual transient modulation of the relaxation rates of excited photocarriers. A detailed analysis of the electron self-energy based on a nonequilibrium Green's function formalism reveals that the phase space of electron-electron scattering is critically modulated by the photoinduced collective CDW excitation, providing an intuitive microscopic un…
We have developed a novel multiscale computational scheme to describe coupled dynamics of light electromagnetic field with electrons and atoms in crystalline solids, where first-principles molecular dynamics based on time-dependent density functional theory is used to describe the microscopic dynamics. The method is applicable to wide phenomena in nonlinear and ultrafast optics. To show usefulness of the method, we apply it to a pump-probe measurement of coherent phonon in diamond where a Raman amplification takes place during the propagation of the probe pulse.
We report on the temperature dependence of the $ZrTe_5$ electronic properties, studied at equilibrium and out of equilibrium, by means of time and angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. Our results unveil the dependence of the electronic band structure across the Fermi energy on the sample temperature. This finding is regarded as the dominant mechanism responsible for the anomalous resistivity observed at T* $\sim$ 160 K along with the change of the charge carrier character from holelike to electronlike. Having addressed these long-lasting questions, we prove the possibility to control, at…
We model Raman processes in silicene and germanene involving scattering of quasiparticles by, either, two phonons, or, one phonon and one point defect. We compute the resonance Raman intensities and lifetimes for laser excitations between 1 and 3$\,$eV using a newly developed third-nearest neighbour tight-binding model parametrized from first principles density functional theory. We identify features in the Raman spectra that are unique to the studied materials or the defects therein. We find that in silicene, a new Raman resonance arises from the $2.77\,\rm$eV $π-σ$ plasmon at the M point, me…

By using constrained density functional theory modeling, we demonstrate that ultrafast optical pumping unveils hidden charge orders in group VI monolayer transition metal ditellurides. We show that irradiation of the insulating 2H phases stabilizes multiple transient charge density wave orders with light-tunable distortion, periodicity, electronic structure and bandgap. Moreover, optical pumping of the semimetallic 1T' phases generates a transient charge ordered metallic phase composed of 2D diamond clusters. For each transient phase we identify the critical fluence at which it is observed and…
In the past decade, the advent of time-resolved spectroscopic tools has provided a new ground to explore fundamental interactions in solids and to disentangle degrees of freedom whose coupling leads to broad structures in the frequency domain. Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) has been utilized to directly study the relaxation dynamics of a metal in the presence of electron-phonon coupling. The effect of photo-excitations on the real and imaginary part of the self-energy as well as the time scale associated with different recombination processes are discussed. In c…
Measuring terahertz (THz) conductivity on an ultrafast time scale is an excellent way to observe charge-carrier dynamics in semiconductors as a function of time after photoexcitation. However, a conductivity measurement alone cannot separate the effects of charge-carrier recombination from effective mass changes as charges cool and experience different regions of the electronic band structure. Here we present a form of time-resolved magneto-THz spectroscopy which allows us to measure cyclotron effective mass on a picosecond time scale. We demonstrate this technique by observing electron coolin…
The interaction between lattice and spins is at the heart of an extremely intriguing ultrafast dynamics in magnetic materials. In this work we formulate a general non-equilibrium theory that disentangles the complex interplay between them in a THz laser-excited antiferromagnetic insulator. The theory provides a quantitative description of the transient energy flow between the spin and lattice sub-systems, subject to magnon-phonon and phonon-phonon scatterings, giving rise to finite life-times of the quasiparticles and to the equilibration time of the system. We predict a novel kind of scatteri…
The zone-center $E_{2g}$ modes play a crucial role in MgB$_2$, controlling the scattering mechanisms in the normal state as well the superconducting pairing. Here, we demonstrate via first-principles quantum-field theory calculations that, due to the anisotropic electron-phonon interaction, a $hot$-$phonon$ regime where the $E_{2g}$ phonons can achieve significantly larger effective populations than other modes, is triggered in MgB$_2$ by the interaction with an ultra-short laser pulse. Spectral signatures of this scenario in ultrafast pump-probe Raman spectroscopy are discussed in detail, rev…
We investigate the quasiparticle dynamics in the prototype heavy fermion CeCoIn$_5$ using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Our results indicate that this material system undergoes hybridization fluctuations before full establishment of the heavy electron coherence, as the temperature decreases from $\sim$120 K ($T^\dagger$) to $\sim$55 K ($T^*$ ). We reveal that the observed anomalous phonon softening and damping reduction below $T^*$ are directly associated with opening of an indirect hybridization gap. We also discover a distinct collective mode with an energy of $\sim$8 meV, which…
The weakly screened electron-hole interactions in an atomically thin semiconductor not only downshift its excitation spectrum from a quasiparticle one, but also redistribute excitation energies and wavefunction characters with profound effects on diverse modes of material response, including the exciton-phonon scattering processes accessible to resonant Raman measurements. Here we develop a first-principles framework to calculate frequency-dependent resonant Raman intensities that includes excitonic effects and goes beyond the Placzek approximation. We show how excitonic effects in MoS2 strong…
Epitaxial strain and chemical substitution have been the workhorses of functional materials design. These static techniques have shown immense success in controlling properties in complex oxides through the tuning of subtle structural distortions. Recently, an approach based on the excitation of an infrared active phonon with intense mid-infrared light has created an opportunity for dynamical control of structure through special nonlinear coupling to Raman phonons. We use first-principles techniques to show that this approach can dynamically induce a magnetic phase transition from the ferromag…

Time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (trARPES) is a powerful method to track the ultrafast dynamics of quasiparticles and electronic bands in energy and momentum space. We present a setup for trARPES with 22.3 eV extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) femtosecond pulses at 50-kHz repetition rate, which enables fast data acquisition and access to dynamics across momentum space with high sensitivity. The design and operation of the XUV beamline, pump-probe setup, and UHV endstation are described in detail. By characterizing the effect of space-charge broadening, we determine an ultimate source…
Dirac semimetal PdTe2 single-crystal temperature-dependent ultrafast carrier and phonon dynamics were studied using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Two distinct carrier and coherent phonons relaxation processes were identified in the 5 K - 300 K range. Quantitative analysis revealed a fast relaxation process (τ_f) occurring on a subpicosecond time scale which originated from electron-phonon thermalization. This was followed by a slower relaxation process (τ_s) with a time scale of ~ 7-9.5 ps which originated from phonon-assisted electron-hole recombination. Two significant vibration…
Selective excitation of coherent high-amplitude vibrations of atoms in a solid can induce exotic nonequilibrium states, in which the character of interactions between electronic, magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom is considerably altered and the underlying symmetries are broken. Here we use intense single-cycle terahertz pulses to drive coherently the dipole-active $E_u^1$ phonon mode of a Bi$_2$Se$_3$ crystal. As a result, several Raman-active modes are simultaneously excited in a nonlinear process, while one of them, having the $E_g^2$ symmetry, experiences dynamical splitting during th…
We review recent progress in utilizing ultrafast light-matter interaction to control the macroscopic properties of quantum materials. Particular emphasis is placed on photoinduced phenomena that do not result from ultrafast heating effects but rather emerge from microscopic processes that are inherently nonthermal in nature. Many of these processes can be described as transient modifications to the free-energy landscape resulting from the redistribution of quasiparticle populations, the dynamical modification of coupling strengths and the resonant driving of the crystal lattice. Other pathways…
Ultrafast laser excitations provide an efficient and low-power consumption alternative since different magnetic properties and topological spin states can be triggered and manipulated at the femtosecond (fs) regime. However, it is largely unknown whether laser excitations already used in data information platforms can manipulate the magnetic properties of recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials. Here we show that ultrashort laser pulses (30$-$85 fs) can not only manipulate magnetic domains of 2D-XY CrCl$_3$ ferromagnets, but also induce the formation and control …
Strong light-matter interactions in layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) open up vivid possibilities for novel exciton-based devices. The optical properties of TMDs are dominated mostly by the tightly bound excitons and more complex quasiparticles, the biexcitons. Instead of physically exfoliated monolayers, the solvent-mediated chemical exfoliation of these 2D crystals is a cost-effective, large-scale production method suitable for real device applications. We explore the ultrafast excitonic processes in WS$_{2}$ dispersion using broadband femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy at roo…
