Dirac semimetal PdTe2 single-crystal temperature-dependent ultrafast carrier and phonon dynamics were studied using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Two distinct carrier and coherent phonons relaxation processes were identified in the 5 K - 300 K range. Quantitative analysis revealed a fast relaxation process (τ_f) occurring on a subpicosecond time scale which originated from electron-phonon thermalization. This was followed by a slower relaxation process (τ_s) with a time scale of ~ 7-9.5 ps which originated from phonon-assisted electron-hole recombination. Two significant vibrational modes resolved at all measured temperatures and corresponded to Te atoms in-plane (E_g), and out-of-plane (A_1g), motion. As temperature increased both phonon modes softened markedly. A_1g mode frequency monotonically decreased as temperature increased. Its damping rate remained virtually unchanged. As expected, E_g decreased uniformly as temperatures rose. At temperatures above 80 K, there was insignificant change. Test results suggested that pure dephasing played an important role in the relaxation processes. PdTe2 phonon is thought responsible for its superconductive properties. Examining phonons behavior should improve the understanding of its complex superconductivity.
We study impurity scattering in the normal and d-wave superconducting states of line nodal semimetals and show that, due to additional scattering phase space available for impurities on the surface, the quasiparticle interference pattern acquires an extended character instead of a discrete collection of delta function peaks. Moreover, using the T-matrix formalism, we demonstrate that the conventional behavior of a scalar impurity in a d-wave superconductor breaks down on the surface of a line nodal semimetal in the quasi flat band limit.
Weyl semimetals are a new member of the topological materials family, featuring a pair of singly degenerate Weyl cones with linear dispersion around the nodes in the bulk, and Fermi arcs on the surface. Depending on whether the system conserves or violates Lorentz symmetry, Weyl semimetals can be categorized into two classes. Photoemission spectroscopy measurements have confirmed the TaAs-class and WTe2-class of Weyl semimetals as type-I and type-II respectively. This review article aims to elucidate and elaborate on the basic concepts of Weyl semimetals and quasiparticle interference experime…
We consider the effect of electron-phonon coupling in semimetals in high magnetic fields, with regard to elastic modes that can lead to a redistribution of carriers between pockets. We show that in a clean three dimensional system, at each Landau level crossing, this leads to a discontinuity in the magnetostriction, and a divergent contribution to the elastic modulus. We estimate the magnitude of this effect in the group V semimetal Bismuth.
Raman scattering in the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 shows an intricate interplay of electronic and phonon degrees of freedom. We observe resonant phonon scattering due to interband transitions, an anomalous anharmonicity of phonon frequency and intensity, as well as quasielastic (E~0) electronic scattering. The latter two effects are governed by a characteristic temperature scale T* ~ 100 K that is related to mutual fluctuations of lattice and electronic degrees of freedom. A refined analysis shows that this characteristic temperature corresponds to the energy of optical phonons w…
We investigate ultrafast phonon dynamics in the Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$ alloy system for various compositions $x$ using a reflective femtosecond pump-probe technique. The coherent optical phonons corresponding to the A$_{1g}$ local vibrational modes of Bi-Bi, Bi-Sb, and Sb-Sb are generated and observed in the time domain with a few picoseconds dephasing time. The frequencies of the coherent optical phonons were found to change as the Sb composition $x$ was varied, and more importantly, the relaxation time of those phonon modes was dramatically reduced for $x$ values in the range 0.5--0.8. We argue …
Tantalum arsenide is a member of the non-centrosymmetric monopnictides, which are putative Weyl semimetals. In these materials, three-dimensional chiral massless quasiparticles, the so-called Weyl fermions, are predicted to induce novel quantum mechanical phenomena, such as the chiral anomaly and topological surface states. However, their chirality is only well-defined if the Fermi level is close enough to the Weyl points that separate Fermi surface pockets of opposite chirality exist. In this article, we present the bulk Fermi surface topology of high quality single crystals of TaAs, as deter…
Weyl semimetals host topologically protected surface states, with arced Fermi surface contours that are predicted to propagate through the bulk when their momentum matches that of the surface projections of the bulk's Weyl nodes. We use spectroscopic mapping with a scanning tunneling microscope to visualize quasi-particle scattering and interference at the surface of the Weyl semimetal TaAs. Our measurements reveal 10 different scattering wave vectors, which can be understood and precisely reproduced with a theory that takes into account the shape, spin texture, and momentum-dependent propagat…
Enhanced Phonon-Phonon Interactions and Weakened Electron-Phonon Coupling in Charge-Density-Wave Topological Semimetal EuAl4 with a Possible Intermediate Electronic State
In nodal-line semimetals linearly dispersing states form Dirac loops in the reciprocal space, with high degree of electron-hole symmetry and almost-vanishing density of states near the Fermi level. The result is reduced electronic screening and enhanced correlations between Dirac quasiparticles. Here we investigate the electronic structure of ZrSiSe, by combining time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with ab initio density functional theory (DFT) complemented by an extended Hubbard model (DFT +U +V). We show that electronic correlations are reduced on an ultrashort timescale by o…
Recently, Cd3As2 has attracted intensive research interest as an archetypical Dirac semimetal, hosting three-dimensional linear-dispersive electronic bands near the Fermi level. Previous studies have shown that single-crystalline Cd3As2 has an anomalously low lattice thermal conductivity, ranging from 0.3 W/mK to 0.7 W/mK at 300 K, which has been attributed to point defects. In this work, we combine first-principles lattice dynamics calculations and temperature-dependent high-resolution Raman spectroscopy of high-quality single-crystal thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy to reveal the e…
We study electron-phonon interaction and related transport properties of nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS using first-principles calculations. We find that ZrSiS is characterized by a weak electron-phonon coupling on the order of 0.1, which is almost energy independent. The main contribution to the electron-phonon coupling originates from long-wavelength optical phonons, causing no significant renormalization of the electron spectral function. At the charge neutrality point, we find that electrons and holes provide a comparable contribution to the scattering rate. The phonon-limited resistivity calc…
Recently, three-component new fermions in topological semimetal MoP are experimentally observed, which may have potential applications like topological qubits, low-power electronics and spintronics. These are closely related to thermal transport properties of MoP. In this work, the phonon transport of MoP is investigated by solving the linearized phonon Boltzmann equation within the single-mode relaxation time approximation (RTA). The calculated room-temperature lattice thermal conductivity is 18.41 $\mathrm{W m^{-1} K^{-1}}$ and 34.71 $\mathrm{W m^{-1} K^{-1}}$ along the in- and cross-plane d…
Discovery and observations of exotic, quantized optical and electrical responses have sparked renewed interest in nonmagnetic chiral crystals. Within this class of materials, six group V transition metal ditetrelides, that is, XY$_2$ (X = V, Nb, Ta and Y = Si, Ge), host composite Weyl nodes on high-symmetry lines, with Kramers-Weyl fermions at time-reversal invariant momenta. In addition, at least two of these materials, NbGe$_2$ and NbSi$_2$, exhibit superconducting transitions at low temperatures. The interplay of strong electron-phonon interaction and complex Fermi surface topology present …
He atom scattering has been demonstrated to be a sensitive probe of the electron-phonon interaction parameter $λ$ at metal and metal-overlayer surfaces. Here it is shown that the theory linking $λ$ to the thermal attenuation of atom scattering spectra (the Debye-Waller factor), can be applied to topological semimetal surfaces, like the quasi-one dimensional charge-density-wave system Bi(114) and the layered pnictogen chalcogenides.
Internodal dynamics of quasiparticles in Weyl semimetals manifest themselves in hydrodynamic, transport and thermodynamic phenomena and are essential for potential valleytronic applications of these systems. In an external magnetic field, coherent quasiparticle tunnelling between the nodes modifies the quasiparticle dispersion and, in particular, opens gaps in the dispersion of quasiparticles at the zeroth Landau level. We study magnetotransport in a Weyl semimetal taking into account mechanisms of quasiparticle scattering both affected by such gaps and independent of them. We compute the long…
The Weyl semimetal phase is a recently discovered topological quantum state of matter characterized by the presence of topologically protected degeneracies near the Fermi level. These degeneracies are the source of exotic phenomena, including the realization of chiral Weyl fermions as quasiparticles in the bulk and the formation of Fermi arc states on the surfaces. Here, we demonstrate that these two key signatures show distinct evolutions with the bulk band topology by performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, supported by first-principle calculations, on transition-metal monophos…
We here introduce a Fortran code that computes anharmonic free energy of solids from first-principles based on our phonon quasiparticle approach. In this code, phonon quasiparticle properties, i.e., renormalized phonon frequencies and lifetimes, are extracted from mode-projected velocity auto-correlation functions (VAF) of modes sampled by molecular dynamics (MD) trajectories. Using renormalized frequencies as input, the code next constructs an effective harmonic force constant matrix to calculate anharmonic phonon dispersions over the whole Brillouin zone and thus the anharmonic free energy i…
Weyl semimetals display unusual electronic transport properties when placed under magnetic fields. Here, we investigate how magnetic fields alter the dynamics of long wavelength lattice vibrations in these materials. To that end, we develop a theory for the phonon dispersion, which incorporates contributions from chiral and nonchiral Landau levels, electron-phonon interactions, electron-electron interactions, and disorder. We predict (i) a magnetic-field-induced hybridization between optical phonons and plasmons, (ii) avoided crossings between pseudoscalar optical phonons and electronic excita…

Topological semimetals have revealed a wide array of novel transport phenomena, including electron hydrodynamics, quantum field theoretic anomalies, and extreme magnetoresistances and mobilities. However, the scattering mechanisms central to these behaviors remain largely unexplored. Here we reveal signatures of significant phonon-electron scattering in the type-II Weyl semimetal WP$_{2}$ via temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy. Over a large temperature range, we find that the decay rates of the lowest energy $A_{1}$ modes are dominated by phonon-electron rather than phonon-phonon scatter…

In this report, we have investigated the lattice dynamics and electron-phonon interaction in single crystalline ZrSiS using Raman spectroscopy. Polarization and angle resolved measurements have been performed and the results have been analyzed using crystal symmetries and theoretically calculated atomic vibrati…

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy were used to study semimetallic 1T - TiTe2 quasiparticle dispersion and dynamics. A kink and a flat band, having the same energy scale and temperature-dependent behaviors along the G-M direction, were detected. Both manifested at low temperatures but blurred as temperature increased. The kink was formed by an electron-phonon coupling. And the localized flat band might be closely related to an electron-phonon coupling. Ultrafast optical spectroscopy identified multiple distinct time scales in…

Non-Hermiticity in Weyl Hamiltonian leads to the realization of Weyl exceptional rings and flat bands inside the Weyl exceptional rings. Recently, the platform of non-Hermitian physics is extended to many-body or disordered systems where quasiparticles possess finite lifetime. Here, we clarify that the deviation from unitarity limit in a disordered Weyl semimetal leads to the generation of Weyl exceptional rings regardless of the detail of the scattering potential. In the case of topological Dirac semimetals, hybrid rings and flat bands without vorticity of complex-energy eigenvalues are reali…
Despite being the most studied nodal line semimetal, a clear understanding of the transient state relaxation dynamics and the underlying mechanism in ZrSiS is lacking. Using time and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study the ultrafast relaxation dynamics in ZrSiS and reveal a unique relaxation in the bulk nodal-line state which is well captured by a simple model based on optical and acoustic phonon cooling. We find linear decay processes for both optical and acoustic phonon relaxations with acoustic cooling suppressed at high temperatures. Our results reveal different decay mecha…
A theoretical model is presented for the phonon limited mobility of the Dirac-Fermion gas in a three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$ considering scattering from both the acoustic and the optical phonons. Screening effects are taken into account and it is found that they lead to a significant enhancement of the mobility. Simple analytical equations and power laws are obtained in both the Bloch-Gruneisen and equipartition regimes. The dependence of mobility on the temperature $T$ and the electron density $n_e$ is investigated. It is found that optical phonon limited mobility $μ_{op…
Energy transfer from electrons to phonons is an important consideration in any Weyl or Dirac semimetal based application. In this work, we analytically calculate the cooling power of acoustic phonons, i.e. the energy relaxation rate of electrons which are interacting with acoustic phonons, for Weyl and Dirac semimetals in a variety of different situations. For cold Weyl or Dirac semimetals with the Fermi energy at the nodal points, we find the electronic temperature, $T_e$, decays in time as a power law. In the heavily doped regime, $T_e$ decays linearly in time far away from equilibrium. In a…
Topological semimetals are currently attracting increasing interest due to their potential applications in topological qubits and low-power electronics, which are closely related to their thermal transport properties. In this work, by solving the Boltzmann transport equation based on first-principles calculations, we systematically investigate the phonon transport properties of topological semimetal WC and WN. The predicted room-temperature lattice thermal conductivities of WC (WN) along a and c directions are 1140.64 (7.47) $\mathrm{W m^{-1} K^{-1}}$ and 1214.69 (5.39) $\mathrm{W m^{-1} K^{-1…
Nieh-Yan anomaly describes the non-conservation of chiral charges induced by the coupling between Dirac fermions and torsion fields. Since the torsion field is beyond general relativity, this effect remains hypothetical and its relevance to our universe is unclear in the context of high-energy physics. In this work, we propose that the phonons can induce a torsion field for the Kramers-Weyl fermions through electron-phonon interaction in a non-magnetic chiral crystal, thus leading to the occurrence of the Nieh-Yan anomaly in this condensed matter system. As a consequence, the Nieh-Yan term can…
Electron-phonon interaction (EPI) is presumably detrimental for thermoelectric performance in semiconductors because it limits carrier mobility. Here we show that enhanced EPI with strong energy dependence offers an intrinsic pathway to significant increase in the Seebeck coefficient and the thermoelectric power factor, particularly in the context of two-dimensional (2D) graphene-like Dirac bands. The increase is realized by enabling electron energy filtering through preferential scattering of electron/hole carriers. We prove this concept by implementing state-of-the-art first-principles compu…
The interplay between interactions and topology in quantum materials is of extensive current interest. Strong correlations are known to be important for insulating topological states, as exemplified by the fractional quantum Hall effect. For the metallic case, whether and how they can drive topological states that have no free-electron counterparts is an open and pressing question. We introduce a general framework for lattice symmetries to constrain single-particle excitations even when they are not quasiparticles, and substantiate it in a periodic Anderson model with two channels of conductio…
We report a polarized Raman study of Weyl semimetal TaAs. We observe all the optical phonons, with energies and symmetries consistent with our first-principles calculations. We detect additional excitations assigned to multiple-phonon excitations. These excitations are accompanied by broad peaks separated by 140~cm$^{-1}$ that are also most likely associated with multiple-phonon excitations. We also noticed a sizable B$_1$ component for the spectral background, for which the origin remains unclear.
Given the importance of crystal symmetry for the emergence of topological quantum states, we have studied, as exemplified in NbNiTe2, the interplay of crystal symmetry, atomic displacements (lattice vibration), band degeneracy, and band topology. For NbNiTe2 structure in space group 53 (Pmna) - having an inversion center arising from two glide planes and one mirror plane with a 2-fold rotation and screw axis - a full gap opening exists between two band manifolds near the Fermi energy. Upon atomic displacements by optical phonons, the symmetry lowers to space group 28 (Pma2), eliminating one gl…
We study the temperature relaxation dynamics of nodal-line semimetals after a sudden excitation in the presence of acoustic and optical phonon modes. We find that the nodal line constrains the electron momenta in scattering processes and, as a result, the temperature relaxation due to acoustic phonons is exponential as a function of time. However, depending on initial conditions, other functional forms are possible. In typical pump-probe experiments, the temperature relaxation is linear due to acoustic phonons with rates that vary as $\sim n^{1/2}$ with density. The temperature relaxation due …
Chiral fermions in solid state feature "Fermi arc" states, connecting the surface projections of the bulk chiral nodes. The surface Fermi arc is a signature of nontrivial bulk topology. Unconventional chiral fermions with an extensive Fermi arc traversing the whole Brillouin zone have been theoretically proposed in CoSi. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy / spectroscopy to investigate quasiparticle interference at various terminations of a CoSi single crystal. The observed surface states exhibit chiral fermion-originated characteristics. These reside on (001) and (011) but not (111) su…
Knowledge of lattice anharmonicity is essential to elucidate distinctive thermal properties in crystalline solids. Yet, accurate \textit{ab initio} investigations of lattice anharmonicity encounter difficulties owing to the cumbersome computations. Here we introduce the phonon quasiparticle approach and review its application to various materials. This method efficiently and reliably addresses lattice anharmonicity by combining \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics and lattice dynamics calculations. Thus, in principle, it accounts for full anharmonic effects and overcomes finite-size effects t…
Photoemission and phonon spectroscopies have yielded widely varying estimates of the electron-phonon coupling constant λ on the surfaces of topological insulators, even for a particular material and technique. We connect the results of these experiments by determining the Dirac fermion quasiparticle spectral function using information from measured spectra of a strongly-interacting, low-lying optical surface phonon band. The manifest spectral features resulting from the coupling are found to vary on energy scales < 1 meV, and are distinct from those traditionally observed in the case of acoust…
Understanding and predicting lattice dynamics in strongly anharmonic crystals is one of the long-standing challenges in condensed matter physics. Here we propose a first-principles method that gives accurate quasiparticle (QP) peaks of the phonon spectrum with strong anharmonic broadening. On top of the conventional first-order self-consistent phonon (SC1) dynamical matrix, the proposed method incorporates frequency renormalization effects by the bubble self-energy within the QP approximation. We apply the developed methodology to the strongly anharmonic $α$-CsPbBr$_3$ that displays phonon ins…
A van der Waals coupled Weyl semimetal material NbIrTe4 is investigated by combining scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and first principles calculations. We observe a sharp peak in the tunneling conductance near the zero bias energy, and its origin is ascribed to a van Hove singularity associated with a Lifshitz transition of the topologically none trivial Fermi arc states. Furthermore, tunneling spectroscopy measurements show a surprisingly large signature of electron boson coupling, which presumably represents anomalously enhanced electron phonon coupling through the enhanced charge…
Topological semimetal may have potential applications like topological qubits, spintronics and quantum computations. Efficient heat dissipation is a key factor for the reliability and stability of topological semimetal-based nano-electronics devices, which is closely related to high thermal conductivity. In this work, the elastic properties and lattice thermal conductivity of TaN are investigated by first-principles calculations and the linearized phonon Boltzmann equation within the single-mode relaxation time approximation (RTA). According to the calculated bulk modulus, shear modulus and $C…
The selective excitation of coherent phonons provides unique capabilities to control fundamental properties of quantum materials on ultrafast time scales. For instance, in the presence of strong electron-phonon coupling, the electronic band structure can become substantially modulated. Recently, it was predicted that by this means even topologically protected states of matter can be manipulated and, ultimately, be destroyed: For the layered transition metal dichalcogenide Td-WTe$_2$, pairs of Weyl points are expected to annihilate as an interlayer shear mode drives the crystalline structure to…
