We report magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and Raman scattering investigations of alpha-TeVO4 containing V-O edge-sharing chains. These chains promote a system of ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg alternating exchange chains with pronounced spin frustration. The magnetic susceptibility and Raman scattering evidence a crossover at T* = 85 K with different slopes of the reciprocal susceptibility and a magnetic phase transition into a long-range-ordered state at Tc = 16 K. From Raman scattering data a strong mutual coupling between lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom is deduced. A comparison to model calculations and prior Raman scattering on other chain systems yield a plausible interpretation of the microscopic mechanism for the crossover behavior.
Electronic orderings of charges, orbitals and spins are observed in many strongly correlated electron materials, and revealing their dynamics is a critical step toward understanding the underlying physics of important emergent phenomena. Here we use time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to probe the dynamics of antiferromagnetic spin ordering in the manganite Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ following ultrafast photo-exitation. Our studies reveal a glass-like recovery of the spin ordering and a crossover in the dimensionality of the restoring interaction from quasi-1D at low pum…
We report electrical resistivity, ac magnetic susceptibility and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements of intermediate valence YbNi$_{3}$Ga$_{9}$ under pressure and magnetic field. We have revealed a characteristic pressure-induced Yb valence crossover within the temperature-pressure phase diagram, and a first-order metamagnetic transition is found below $P_{\rm c}$ $\sim$ 9 GPa where the system undergoes a pressure-induced antiferromagnetic transition. As a possible origin of the metamagnetic behavior, a critical valence fluctuation emerging near the critical point of the first-order val…
Effects of the electron-electron umklapp process on dimensional crossovers caused by the interchain one-particle hopping, $t_{\perp}$, in a weakly-coupled half-filled chain system have been studied, based on the perturbative renormalization-group approach. The variance of $t_\perp$ and the umklapp process under scaling is taken into account. We found that the intrachain umklapp process causes a finite crossover value of $t_\perp$, $t_{\perp cr}$. For $t_{\perp}<t_{\perp c}$, as the temperature decreases, the system undergoes a crossesover from the Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquid to an incipient…
Magnetic phase transition under hydrostatic pressure in TlCu$_{0.988}$Mg$_{0.012}$Cl$_3$ was investigated by magnetization measurements. The parent compound TlCuCl$_3$ is a coupled spin dimer system, which undergoes a pressure-induced quantum phase transition from a gapped ground state to an antiferromagnetic state at $P_{\rm c} = 0.42$ kbar due to the shrinkage of the gap. At ambient pressure, the present doped system exhibits impurity-induced magnetic ordering at $T_{\rm N}=2.5$ K. With increasing pressure, $T_{\rm N}$ increases. This is because the effective exchange interaction $J_{\rm eff…
We have obtained mid-infrared optical absorption spectra of the S=1/2 quasi one-dimensional CuO using polarized transmission measurement and interpreted the spectra in terms of phonon assisted magnetic excitations. When the electric field is parallel to the main antiferromagnetic direction a Delta shaped peak is observed with the maximum at 0.23eV which is attributed to spinons along Cu-O chains. At low temperatures in the antiferromagnetic phase another peak appears at 0.16eV which is attributed to two-magnon absorption but the spinon peak remains. This behavior is interpreted as due to a dim…
The random antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XX and XXZ chain is studied numerically for varying strength of the disorder, using exact diagonalization and stochastic series expansion methods. The spin-spin correlation function as well as the stiffness display a clear crossover from the pure behavior (no disorder) to the infinite randomness fixed point or random singlet behavior predicted by the the real space renormalization group. The crossover length scale is shown to diverge as $ξ\sim{\mathcal D}^{-γ}$, where ${\mathcal D}$ is the variance of the random bonds. Our estimates for the exponent $γ$ ag…
Thermal properties of the $S=1/2$ kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet at low temperatures are investigated by means of the Hams-de Raedt method for clusters of up to 36 sites possessing a full symmetry of the lattice. The specific heat exhibits, in addition to the double peaks, the third and the forth peaks at lower temperatures. With decreasing the temperature, the type of the magnetic short-range order (SRO) changes around the third-peak temperature from the $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ to the $q$=0 states, suggesting that the third peak of the specific heat is associated with a crossover phenom…
We calculate the excitation spectrum and spectral weights of the alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic spin-half Heisenberg chain with exchange couplings $J$ and $-|λ|J$ as a power series in $λ$. For small $|λ|$, the gapped one-particle spectrum has a maximum at $k=0$ and there is a rich structure of bound (and anti-bound) states below (and above) the 2-particle continuum. As $|λ|$ is increased past unity the spectrum crosses over to the Haldane regime, where the peak shifts away from $k=0$, the one particle states merge with the bottom of the continuum near $k=0$, and the spectral weigh…

We introduce a microscopic model for electron doped manganites that explains the mechanism of the observed transition from $G$-type antiferromagnetic ($G$-AF) to $C$-type antiferromagnetic ($C$-AF) order under increasing doping by double exchange mechanism. The model unravels the crucial role played by $e_g$ orbital degrees of freedom and explains the observed metal-to-insulator transition by a dimensional crossover at the magnetic phase transition. The specific heat and the spin canting angle found for the $G$-AF phase agree with the experimental findings. As a surprising outcome of the theor…
The magnetic susceptibility chi and specific heat C versus temperature T of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic alternating-exchange (J1 and J2) Heisenberg chain are studied for the entire range 0 \leq alpha \leq 1 of the alternation parameter alpha = J2/J1. For the uniform chain (alpha = 1), detailed comparisons of the high-accuracy chi(T) and C(T) Bethe ansatz data of Kluemper and Johnston are made with the asymptotically exact low-T field theory predictions of Lukyanov. QMC simulations and TMRG calculations of chi(alpha,T) are presented. From the low-T TMRG data, the spin gap Delta(alpha)/J1 is …
Magnetic properties of the spin-3/2 Heisenberg system Cr2BP3O12 are investigated by magnetic susceptibility chi(T) measurements, electron spin resonance, neutron diffraction, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, as well as classical and quantum Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The broad maximum of chi(T) at 85K and the antiferromagnetic Weiss temperature of 139 K indicate low-dimensional magnetic behavior. Below TN = 28 K, Cr2BP3O12 is antiferromagnetically ordered with the k = 0 propagation vector and an ordered moment of 2.5 muB/Cr. DFT calculations, including DFT+U and hybrid func…
We investigated optical properties of Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3, which has the A-type antiferromagnetic ordering at a low temperature. We found that T- dependence of spectral weight transfer shows a clear correlation with the magnetic phase transition. In comparison with the optical conductivity results of Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3, which has the CE-type antiferromagnetic charge ordering, we showed that optical properties of Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3 near the Neel temperature could be explained by a crossover from 3D to 2D metals. Details of spectral weight changes are consistent with the polaron picture.
The properties of a phase with large correlation length can be strongly influenced by the underlying normal phase. We illustrate this by studying the half-filled two-dimensional Hubbard model using cellular dynamical mean-field theory with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo. Sharp crossovers in the mechanism that favors antiferromagnetic correlations and in the corresponding local density of states are observed. These crossovers occur at values of the interaction strength $U$ and temperature $T$ that are controlled by the underlying normal-state Mott transition.
The antiferromagnetic phase of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Hubbard model with nearest neighbors hopping is studied on a bipartite cubic lattice by means of the quantum SU(2)xU(1) rotor approach that yields a fully self-consistent treatment of the antiferromagnetic state that respects the symmetry properties the model and satisfy the Mermin-Wagner theorem. The collective variables for charge and spin are isolated in the form of the space-time fluctuating U(1) phase field and rotating spin quantization axis governed by the SU(2) symmetry, respectively. As a result interacting…
We present a study of the critical phenomena around the quantum critical point in heavy-fermion systems. In the framework of the S=1/2 Kondo lattice model, we introduce an extended decoupling scheme of the Kondo interaction which allows one to treat the spin fluctuations and the Kondo effect on an equal footing. The calculations, developed in a self-consistent one-loop approximation, lead to the formation of a damped collective mode with a dynamic exponent z=2 in the case of an antiferromagnetic instability. The system displays a quantum-classical crossover at finite temperature depending how …
We report on high-resolution specific-heat and magnetocaloric-effect measurements of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnets CsMn(Br_xI_{1-x})_3 with different x. The evolution of the magnetic phase diagrams from the easy-axis system for x = 0 to the easy-plane system for x = 1 was studied in detail. The specific-heat critical exponent alpha of the almost isotropic x = 0.19 system agrees with the value predicted for a chiral Heisenberg scenario. In an applied magnetic field (B = 6 T) a crossover to a weak first-order transition is detected.
The spin dynamics of coupled spin-1/2, antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains is predicted to exhibit a novel longitudinal mode at low energies and temperatures below the Neel temperature. This mode is a dimensional crossover effect and reveals the presence of a limited amount of long-range antiferromagnetic order co-existing with quantum fluctuations. In this paper the existence of such a mode is confirmed in the model material KCuF3 using polarized and unpolarized inelastic neutron scattering and the longitudinal polarization of the mode is definitively established. The lineshape is broadened s…
I consider the effects of enforced dimerization on random Heisenberg antiferromagnetic S=1 chains. I argue for the existence of novel Griffiths phases characterized by {\em two independent dynamical exponents} that vary continuously in these phases; one of the exponents controls the density of spin-1/2 degrees of freedom in the low-energy effective Hamiltonian, while the other controls the corresponding density of spin-1 degrees of freedom. Moreover, in one of these Griffiths phases, the system has very different low temperature behavior in two different parts of the phase which are separated …
Low-temperature specific-heat measurements on YbRh2Si2 at the second order antiferromagnetic (AF) phase transition reveal a sharp peak at T_N=72 mK. The corresponding critical exponent alpha turns out to be alpha=0.38, which differs significantly from that obtained within the framework of the fluctuation theory of second order phase transitions based on the scale invariance, where alpha=0.1. We show that under the application of magnetic field the curve of the second order AF phase transitions passes into a curve of the first order ones at the tricritical point leading to a violation of the cr…
Magnetic correlations near the magneto-structural phase transition in the bilayer iron pnictide parent compound, BaFe$_2$As$_2$, are measured. In close proximity to the antiferromagnetic phase transition in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, a crossover to three dimensional critical behavior is anticipated and has been preliminarily observed. Here we report complementary measurements of two-dimensional magnetic fluctuations over a broad temperature range about T$_N$. The potential role of two-dimensional critical fluctuations in the magnetic phase behavior of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and their evolution near the anticipat…
Motivated by recent experimental work on FeCrAs, we study the magnetic properties of classical spin models on the hexagonal Fe$_2$P/ZrNiAl structure (space group $P{\bar{6}}2m$). When both transition metal/rare earth sites carry magnetic moments, one has alternating distorted kagome and triangular lattice layers. Each point of the triangular lattice lies at the centre of a distorted hexagon and actually corresponds to three isolated magnetic atoms: a "trimer". We show that a simple model consisting of antiferromagnetically correlated Heisenberg spins on the frustrated distorted kagome lattice …
Combining quantum Monte Carlo simulations with the maximum entropy method, we study the dynamical structure factor $S(k,ω)$ of spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with various random bond distributions. We emphasize the crossover behavior in the dynamical properties from pure chain to disorder-dominated random singlet phase due to bond randomness. For the distribution corresponding to the infinite randomness fixed point, $S(k,ω)$ develops broad non-spinon excitations as well as the random-singlet peak near $(k, ω) = (π, 0)$, consistent with the known results obtained by the real-space…
A recently-developed molecular field theory (MFT) has been used to fit single-crystal magnetic susceptibility chi versus temperature T data below the respective antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures TN for a variety of collinear and coplanar noncollinear Heisenberg antiferromagnets. The spins in the system are assumed to interact by Heisenberg exchange and to be identical and crystallographically equivalent. The fitting parameters for chi(T) of collinear antiferromagnets are measurable quantities: the Weiss temperature theta_p in the Curie-Weiss law, TN, chi(TN), and the spin S. For coplanar…
We study the quenching of the Haldane gap in quasi-one-dimensional systems of weakly coupled spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains. The critical interchain coupling Jc required to stabilize long range magnetic order can be accurately determined from large scale quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Several different geometries of coupled chains are studied, illustrating the dependence of Jc on the coordination of chains. For bipartite geometries, ferromagnetically coupled chains yield similar magnitudes for Jc.
We study the effects of a weakened link in random antiferromagnetic spin chains. We show that healing occurs, and that homogeneity is restored at low energy, in a way that is qualitatively similar to the fate of impurities in clean ferromagnetic spin chains, or in Luttinger liquids with attractive interactions. Healing in the random case occurs even without interactions, and is characteristic of the random singlet phase. Using real space renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods, we characterize this universal healing crossover by studying the entanglement across the weak link. W…
We consider the repulsive Hubbard model on a square lattice with an additional term, W, which depends upon the square of a single-particle nearest-neighbor hopping. At half-band filling, constant W, we show that enhancing U/t drives the system from a d-wave superconductor to an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator. At zero temperature in the superconducting phase, spin-spin correlations follow a powerlaw: exp(-i r Q) |r|^(-alpha). Here Q = (pi, pi) and alpha is in the range 1 < alpha < 2 and depends upon the coupling constants W and U. This results is reached on the basis of large scale quantum Mo…
The slave-rotor mean-field theory of Florens and Georges is generalized to the antiferromagnetic phase of the Hubbard model. An effective action consisting of a spin rotor and a fermion is derived and the corresponding saddle-point action is analyzed. Zero-temperature phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Hubbard model is presented. While the magnetic phase persists for all values of the Hubbard interaction U, the single-particle spectral function exhibits a crossover into an incoherent phase when the magnetic moment m (and the corresponding U values) lies within a certain window m_c < m < 1-…
Based on the periodic Anderson model, it is shown that the competition between the quenching of magnetic moments by local quantum spin fluctuations and a magnetic exchange interaction caused by the virtual exchange of pair excitations of quasiparticles in spin channels is responsible for the metamagnetic crossover in CeRu_2Si_2, cooperated with the electron-lattice interaction. The strength of the exchange interaction is proportional to the bandwidth of quasiparticles and its sign changes with increasing magnetizations; it is antiferromagnetic in the absence of magnetizations, whereas it is fe…
We compare predictions of the mean-field theory of superconductivity for nearly antiferromagnetic and nearly ferromagnetic metals for cubic and tetragonal lattices. The calculations are based on the parametrization of an effective interaction arising from the exchange of magnetic fluctuations and assume that a single band is relevant for superconductivity. The results show that for comparable model parameters, the robustness of magnetic pairing increases gradually as one goes from a cubic structure to a more and more anisotropic tetragonal structure either on the border of antiferromagnetism o…
Motivated by dimensional crossover in layered organic $κ$ salts, we determine the phase diagram of a system of four periodically coupled Hubbard chains with frustration at half filling as a function of the interchain hopping ${t_{\perp}/t}$ and interaction strength ${U/t}$ at a fixed ratio of frustration and interchain hopping ${t'/t_{\perp}=-0.5}$. We cover the range from the one-dimensional limit of uncoupled chains (${t_{\perp}/t=0.0}$) to the isotropic model (${t_{\perp}/t=1.0}$). For strong ${U/t}$, we find an antiferromagnetic insulator; in the weak-to-moderate-interaction regime, the ph…
We derived simple rules for the sign of superexchange interaction based on the multielectron calculations of the superexchange interaction in the transition metal oxides that are valid both below and above spin crossover under high pressure. The superexchange interaction between two cations in d$^n$ configurations is given by a sum of individual contributions related to the electron-hole virtual excitations to the different states of the d$^{n + 1}$ and d$^{n - 1}$ configurations. Using these rules, we have analyzed the sign of the superexchange interaction of a number of oxides with magnetic …
We investigate the behavior of antiferromagnetic integer-spin chains in a staggered magnetic field, by means of the density-matrix renormalization group, carefully addressing the role of finite-size effects within the Haldane phase at small fields. In the case of spin S=2, we determine the dependence of the groundstate energy and magnetization on the external field, in the thermodynamic limit, and show how the peculiar finite-size behavior can be connected with the crossover in the groundstate from a spin liquid to a polarized Néel state.
We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study a finite-temperature dimensional-crossover-driven evolution of spin and charge dynamics in weakly coupled Hubbard chains with a half-filled band. The low-temperature behavior of the charge gap indicates a crossover between two distinct energy scales: a high-energy one-dimensional (1D) Mott gap due to the umklapp process and a low-energy gap which stems from long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) fluctuations. Away from the 1D regime and at temperature scales above the charge gap, the emergence of a zero-frequency Drude-like feature in the interchain o…
Interplay between Kondo effect and trends to antiferromagnetic and spin glass ordering in perfect and disordered bipartite Kondo lattices is considered. Ginzburg-Landau equation is derived from the microscopic effective action written in three mode representation (Kondo screening, antiferromagnetic correlations and spin liquid correlations). The problem of local constraint is resolved by means of Popov-Fedotov representation for localized spin operators. It is shown that the Kondo screening enhances the trend to a spin liquid crossover and suppresses antiferromagnetic ordering in perfect Kondo…
beta-YbAlB4 is a heavy fermion superconductor that exhibits a quantum criticality without tuning at zero field and under ambient pressure. We have succeeded in substituting Fe for Al in beta-YbAlB4 as well as the polymorphous compound alpha-YbAlB4, which in contrast has a heavy Fermi liquid ground state. Full structure determination by single crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed no change in crystal structure for both alpha- and beta-YbAlB4, in addition to volume contraction with Fe substitution. Our measurements of the magnetization and specific heat indicate that both alpha-YbAl0.93Fe0.07B4 a…
We present results of magnetic susceptibility and thermal expansion measurements performed on high-quality single crystals of EuPd$_2$(Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$)$_2$ for 0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.2 and temperatures 2 K $\leq T \leq$ 300 K. Data were taken at ambient pressure and finite He-gas pressure $p$ $\leq$ 0.5 GPa. For x = 0 and ambient pressure we observe a pronounced valence-change crossover centred around $T'_V$ $\approx$ 160 K with a non-magnetic ground state. This valence-change crossover is characterized by an extraordinarily strong pressure dependence of d$T'_V$ /d$p$ = (80 $\pm 10)$ K/GPa. We o…
Hexagonal alpha-Ru trichloride single crystals exhibit a strong magnetic anisotropy and we show that upon applying fields up to 14 T in the honeycomb plane the successive magnetic order at T1 = 14 K and T2 = 8 K could be completely suppressed whereas in the perpendicular direction the magnetic order is robust. Furthermore the field dependence of chi(T) implies coexisting ferro- and antiferromagnetic exchange between in-plane components of Ru^3+-spins, whereas for out-of-plane components a strong antiferromagnetic exchange becomes evident. 101^Ru zero-field nuclear magnetic resonance in the ord…
Bulk and nanoparticle powders of LaCoO3 (LCO) were synthesized, and their magnetic and structural properties were studied using SQUID magnetometry and neutron diffraction. The bulk and large nanoparticles exhibit weak ferromagnetism (FM) below T ~ 85K and a crossover from strong to weak antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations near a transition expressed in the lattice parameters, To ~ 40K. This crossover does not occur in the smallest nanoparticles; instead, the magnetic behavior is predominantly ferromagnetic. The amount of FM in the nanoparticles depends on the amount of Co3O4 impurity phase, w…
In the mixed state of layered superconductor the antiferromagnetic order of magnetic ions can create the spin-flop domains along the phase cores of the Josephson vortices. The paper discusses how this feature affects the macroscopic quantum tunnelling of the Josephson vortices. It is shown that the action and hence the activation energy is rendered temperature dependent so that the quantum tunnelling rate becomes temperature dependent below the crossover temperature. It is also shown that in constant temperature thermal or quantum creep may occur, depending on the direction or intensity of the…
From thermodynamics, LSDA+U calculations and exact diagonalization studies of a five-band Hubbard (Cu 3d, O 2p) model on CuO2 stripes we found that Li2ZrCuO4 (Li2CuZrO4 in traditional notation) is close to a ferromagnetic critical point. Analyzing its measured susceptibility chi(T) and specific heat cp(T,H) within a Heisenberg model, we show that the ratio of the 2nd to the 1st neighbor exchange integrals alpha=-J2/J1 of the order of 0.3, i.e. it is close to the critical value alpha_c=1/4. Comparing with related chain cuprates we explain the rather strong field dependence of cp, the monotonous…
We have compared and contrasted magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetoresistive properties of Gd and Dy members of the rare-earth (R) series RFe5Al7, crystallizing in ThMn12 structure, known to order antiferromagnetically. Among other observations, we would like to emphasize on the following novel findings: (i) There are multiple sign-crossovers in the temperature (T) dependence of isothermal entropy change (DeltaS) in the case of Dy compound; in addition to nil DeltaS at the magnetic compensation point known for two-magnetic-sublattice systems, there is an additional sign-crossover at low tempe…
The metal-insulator crossover of the in-plane resistivity upon temperature decrease, recently observed in several classes of cuprate superconductors, when a strong magnetic field suppresses the superconductivity, is explained using the $U(1)\times SU(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge field theory. The origin of this crossover is the same as that for a similar phenomenon observed in heavily underdoped cuprates without magnetic field. It is due to the interplay between the diffusive motion of the charge carriers and the ``peculiar'' localization effect due to short-range antiferromagnetic order. We also ca…
High-temperature superconductivity emerges in a host of different quantum materials, often in a region of the phase diagram where the electronic kinetic energy is comparable in magnitude with the electron-electron Coulomb repulsion. Describing such an intermediate-coupling regime has proven challenging, as standard perturbative approaches are inapplicable. Hence, it is of enormous interest to find models that are amenable to be solved using exact methods. While important advances have been made in elucidating the properties of one such minimal model -- the Hubbard model -- via numerical simula…
The magnetic and dielectric properties of the multiferroic triangular lattice magnet compound alpha-NaFeO2 were studied by magnetization, specific heat, dielectric permittivity, and pyroelectric current measurements and by neutron diffraction experiments using single crystals grown by a hydrothermal synthesis method. This work produced magnetic field (in the monoclinic ab-plane, B_ab, and along the c*-axis, B_c) versus temperature magnetic phase diagrams, including five and six magnetically ordered phases in B_ab and along B_c, respectively. Comparing the polarization direction to the magnetic…
Using linear flavor-wave theory (LFWT) and auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo (QMC), we investigate the properties of the SU(4) Heisenberg model on the anisotropic square lattice in the fully antisymmetric six-dimensional irreducible representation, a model that describes interacting fermions with four flavors at half-filling. Thanks to the calculations on very large systems, we have been able to convincingly demonstrate that QMC results are consistent with a small but finite antiferromagnetic moment at the isotropic point, in qualitative agreement with LFWT obtained earlier [F. H. Kim {\it{e…
The effects associated with interatomic hoppings of excitons and the excitonic Bose condensate formation in the strongly correlated spin crossover systems are considered in the framework of the effective Hamiltonian for the two-band Kanamori model. The appearance of antiferromagnetic ordering due to the exciton order is found even in the absence of interatomic exchange interaction. The spectrum of excitonic excitations is calculated at various points of the "temperature vs. crystal field" phase diagram. Outside the region of exciton ordering, the spectrum has a gap, which vanishes at the bound…
We report quantum oscillation measurements on CaFe2As2 under strong magnetic fields- recently reported to become superconducting under pressures of as little as a kilobar. The largest observed carrier pocket occupies less than 0.05 % of the paramagnetic Brillouin zone volume- consistent with Fermi surface reconstruction caused by antiferromagnetism. On comparing several alkali earth AFe2As2 antiferromagnets (with A=Ca,Sr and Ba), the dependence of both the Fermi surface cross-sectional area F_alpha and the effective mass m*_alpha of the primary observed pocket on the antiferromagnetic/structur…
The $2d$ Hubbard model with nearest-neighbour hopping on the square lattice and an average of one electron per site is known to undergo an extended crossover from metallic to insulating behavior driven by proliferating antiferromagnetic correlations. We study signatures of this crossover in spin and charge correlation functions and present results obtained with controlled accuracy using diagrammatic Monte Carlo in the range of parameters amenable to experimental verification with ultracold atoms in optical lattices. The qualitative changes in charge and spin correlations associated with the cr…
The antiferromagnetic spin correlation function $S_{\bf Q}$, the staggered spin susceptibility $χ_{\bf Q}$ and the energy scale $ω_{FL}=S_{\bf Q}/χ_{\bf Q}$ are studied numerically within the t-J model and the Hubbard model, as relevant to cuprates. It is shown that $ω_{FL}$, related to the onset of the non-Fermi-liquid spin response at $T>ω_{FL}$, is very low in the regime below the 'optimum' hole doping $c_h < c_h^* \sim 0.16$, while it shows a steep increase in the overdoped regime. A quantitative analysis of NMR spin-spin relaxation-rate $1/T_{2G}$ for various cuprates reveals a similar be…
In this paper we study the localization transition induced by the disorder in random antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains. The results of numerical large scale computations are presented for the XX model using its free fermions representation. The scaling behavior of the spin stiffness is investigated for various disorder strengths. The disorder dependence of the localization length is studied and a comparison between numerical results and bosonization arguments is presented. A non trivial connection between localization effects and the crossover from the pure XX fixed point to the infinite rando…
In2VO5, containing magnetically frustrated zig-zag chains, shows a remarkable magnetic crossover at 120 K between paramagnetic states with positive (17 K) and negative (-70 K) Weiss temperatures. Magnetic moment and entropy data show that the V4+ S = 1/2 spins condense into S = 1 triplet dimers below the crossover. A further freezing of the antiferromagnetically coupled triplet dimers into a global singlet state is observed at 2.5 K, with no long range magnetic order down to 0.42 K and in fields up to 9 T. No structural V-V dimerization is observed by high-resolution X-ray diffraction down to …
We report a novel crossover behavior in the long-range-ordered phase of a prototypical spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder compound $\mathrm{(C_7H_{10}N)_2CuBr_4}$. The staggered order was previously evidenced from a continuous and symmetric splitting of $^{14}$N NMR spectral lines on lowering temperature below $T_c\simeq 330$ mK, with a saturation towards $\simeq 150$ mK. Unexpectedly, the split lines begin to further separate away below $T^*\sim 100$ mK while the line width and shape remain completely invariable. This crossover behavior is further corroborated by the NMR relaxatio…
