In this paper, we prove gap results for constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces. Firstly, we find a natural inequality for CMC surfaces which imply convexity for distance function. We then show that if $Σ$ is a complete, properly embedded CMC surface in the Euclidean space satisfying this inequality, then $Σ$ is either a sphere or a right circular cylinder. Next, we show that if $Σ$ is a free boundary CMC surface in the Euclidean 3-ball satisfying the same inequality, then either $Σ$ is a totally umbilical disk or an annulus of revolution. These results complete the picture about gap theorems for CMC surfaces in the Euclidean 3-space. We also prove similar results in the hyperbolic space and in the upper hemisphere, and in higher dimensions.
We study Riemannian manifolds with boundary under a lower $N$-weighted Ricci curvature bound for $N$ at most $1$, and under a lower weighted mean curvature bound for the boundary. We examine rigidity phenomena in such manifolds with boundary. We conclude a volume growth rigidity theorem for the metric neighborhoods of the boundaries, and various splitting theorems. We also obtain rigidity theorems for the smallest Dirichlet eigenvalues for the weighted $p$-Laplacians.
Lu-Minguzzi-Ohta have introduced the notion of a lower $N$-weighted Ricci curvature bound with $\varepsilon$-range, and derived several comparison geometric estimates from a Laplacian comparison theorem for weighted Laplacian. The aim of this paper is to investigate various rigidity phenomena for the equality case of their comparison geometric results. We will obtain rigidity results concerning the Laplacian comparison theorem, diameter comparisons, and volume comparisons. We also generalize their works for non-symmetric Laplacian induced from vector field potential.
We first present a warped product manifold with boundary to show the non-uniqueness of the positive constant scalar curvature and positive constant boundary mean curvature equation. Next, we construct a smooth counterexample to show that the compactness of the set of "lower energy" solutions to the above equation fails when the dimension of the manifold is not less than $62$.
In this paper we first use the result in $[12]$ to remove the assumption of the $L^2$ boundedness of Weyl curvature in the gap theorem in $[9]$ and then obtain a gap theorem for a class of conformally compact Einstein manifolds with very large renormalized volume. We also uses the blow-up method to derive curvature estimates for conformally compact Einstein manifolds with large renormalized volume. The second part of this paper is on conformally compact Einstein manifolds with conformal infinities of large Yamabe constants. Based on the idea in $[15]$ we manage to give the complete proof of th…
In this paper we prove a gap theorem for Kähler manifolds with nonnegative orthogonal bisectional curvature and nonnegative Ricci curvature, which generalizes an earlier result of the first author. We also prove a Liouville theorem for plurisubharmonic functions on such a manifolds, which generalizes a previous result of L.-F. Tam and the first author.
We derive a sharp lower bound for the scalar curvature of non-flat and non-compact expanding gradient Ricci soliton provided that the scalar curvature is non-negative and the potential function is proper. We also give an upper bound for the scalar curvature of noncompact expander when the Ricci curvature is nonpositive and the potential function is proper. We then provide a sufficient condition for the scalar curvature of expanding soliton being nonnegative. We also estimate the curvature of expanding soliton in dimensions three and four. As an application, we prove a gap theorem on three dime…
In this paper, we prove a classification theorem for self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow with $|A|^2\le 1$ in arbitrary codimension. In particular, this implies a gap theorem for self-shrinkers in arbitrary codimension.
We give a survey of various rigidity results involving scalar curvature. Many of these results are inspired by the positive mass theorem in general relativity. In particular, we discuss the recent solution of Min-Oo's Conjecture for the hemisphere (cf. [13]). We also analyze the case of equality in Bray's volume comparison theorem.
On a compact $n$-dimensional manifold, it is well known that a critical metric of the total scalar curvature, restricted to the space of metrics with unit volume is Einstein. It has been conjectured that a critical metric of the total scalar curvature, restricted to the space of metrics with constant scalar curvature of unit volume, will be Einstein. This conjecture, proposed in 1987 by Besse, has not been resolved except when $M$ has harmonic curvature or the metric is Bach flat. In this paper, we prove some gap properties under divergence-free Bach tensor condition for $n\geq 5$, and a simil…
We extend to higher codimension earlier characterization of the equatorial disk and the critical catenoid by a pinching condition on the length of their second fundamental form among free boundary minimal surfaces in the three dimensional Euclidean ball due to L. Ambrozio and I. Nunes.
Let $M$ be an $n$-dimensional closed hypersurface with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in an unit sphere. Denote by $H$ and $S$ the mean curvature and the squared length of the second fundamental form respectively. We prove that if $S > α(n, H)$, where $n\geq 4$ and $H\neq 0$, then $S > α(n, H) + B_n\frac{n H^2}{n - 1}$. Here \[ α(n, H) = n + \frac{n^3}{2 (n - 1)} H^2 - \frac{n (n - 2)}{2 (n - 1)}\sqrt{n^2 H^4 + 4 (n - 1) H^2}, \] $B_n=\frac{1}{5}$ for $4\leq n \leq 20$, and $B_n=\frac{49}{250}$ for $n>20$. Moreover, we obtain a gap theorem for complete hypersurfaces with…
We investigate different concentration-compactness phenomena related to the Q-curvature in arbitrary even dimension. We first treat the case of an open domain in $R^{2m}$, then that of a closed manifold and, finally, the particular case of the sphere $S^{2m}$. In all cases we allow the sign of the Q-curvature to vary, and show that in the case of a closed manifold, contrary to the case of open domains in $R^{2m}$, concentration phenomena can occur only at points of positive Q-curvature. As a consequence, on a locally conformally flat manifold of non-positive Euler characteristic we always have…
In this paper, we study Lagrangian submanifolds satisfying ${\rm \nabla^*} T=0$ introduced by Zhang \cite{Zh} in the complex space forms $N(4c)(c=0\ or \ 1)$, where $T ={\rm \nabla^*}\tilde{h}$ and $\tilde{h}$ is the Lagrangian trace-free second fundamental form. We obtain some Simons' type integral inequalities and rigidity theorems for such Lagrangian submanifolds. Moreover we study Lagrangian submanifolds in $\mathbb{C}^n$ satisfying $\nabla^*\nabla^*T=0$ and introduce a flow method related to them.
In this paper, we will prove a gap theorem for four-dimensional gradient shrinking soliton. More precisely, we will show that any complete four-dimensional gradient shrinking soliton with nonnegative and bounded Ricci curvature, satisfying a pinched Weyl curvature, either is flat, or $λ_1 + λ_2\ge c_0 R>0$ everywhere for some $c_0\approx 0.29167$, where $\{λ_i\}$ are the two least eigenvalues of Ricci curvature. Furthermore, we will show that $λ_1 + λ_2\ge \frac 13R>0$ under a better pinched Weyl tensor assumption. We point out that the lower bound $\frac 13R$ is sharp.
In this paper, we prove that the mean curvature blows up at the same rate as the second fundamental form at the first singular time $T$ of any compact, Type I mean curvature flow. For the mean curvature flow of surfaces, we obtain similar result provided that the Gaussian density is less than two. Our proofs are based on continuous rescaling and the classification of self-shrinkers. We show that all notions of singular sets defined in \cite{St} coincide for any Type I mean curvature flow, thus generalizing the result of Stone who established that for any mean convex Type I Mean curvature flow.…
We study the spectrum of complete noncompact manifolds with bounded curvature and positive injectivity radius. We give general conditions which imply that their essential spectrum has an arbitrarily large finite number of gaps. In particular, for any noncompact covering of a compact manifold, there is a metric on the base so that the lifted metric has an arbitrarily large finite number of gaps in its essential spectrum. Also, for any complete noncompact manifold with bounded curvature and positive injectivity radius we construct a metric uniformly equivalent to the given one (also of bounded c…
A coupling method and an analytic one allow us to prove new lower bounds for the spectral gap of reversible diffusions on compact manifolds. Those bounds are based on the a notion of curvature of the diffusion, like the coarse Ricci curvature or the Bakry--Emery curvature-dimension inequalities. We show that when this curvature is nonnegative, its harmonic mean is a lower bound for the spectral gap.
In this paper, we classify the class of constant weighted curvature curves in the plane with a log-linear density, or in other words, classify all traveling curved fronts with a constant forcing term in $\Bbb R^2.$ The classification gives some interesting phenomena and consequences including: the family of curves converge to a round point when the weighted curvature of curves (or equivalently the forcing term of traveling curved fronts) goes to infinity, a simple proof for a main result in [13] as well as some well-known facts concerning to the isoperimetric problem in the plane with density …
We consider the Laplace-Beltrami operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on convex domains in a Riemannian manifold $(M^n,g)$, and prove that the product of the fundamental gap with the square of the diameter can be arbitrarily small whenever $M^n$ has even a single tangent plane of negative sectional curvature. In particular, the fundamental gap conjecture strongly fails for small deformations of Euclidean space which introduce any negative curvature. We also show that when the curvature is negatively pinched, it is possible to construct such domains of any diameter up to the diameter of …
In \cite{Zh} \cite{LY} Zhang, Luo and Yin initiated the study of Lagrangian submanifolds satisfying ${\rm \nabla^*} T=0$ or ${\rm \nabla^*\nabla^*}T=0$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ or $\mathbb{CP}^n$, where $T ={\rm \nabla^*}\tilde{h}$ and $\tilde{h}$ is the Lagrangian trace-free second fundamental form. They proved several rigidity theorems for Lagrangian surfaces satisfying ${\rm \nabla^*} T=0$ or ${\rm \nabla^*\nabla^*}T=0$ in $\mathbb{C}^2$ under proper small energy assumption and gave new characterization of the Whitney spheres in $\mathbb{C}^2$. In this paper we extend these results to Lagrangian s…
In this paper, by applying a linear trace Li-Yau-Hamilton inequality for a positive (1,1)-form solution of the CR Hodge-Laplace heat equation and monotonicity of the heat equation deformation, we obtain an optimal gap theorem for a complete strictly pseudocovex CR manifold with nonnegative pseudohermitian bisectional curvature and vanishing torsion. We prove that if the average of the Tanaka-Webster scalar curvature over a ball of radius centered at some point o decays as $o(r^{-2})$, then the manifold is flat.
In this paper we discuss the asymptotic entropy for ancient solutions to the Ricci flow. We prove a gap theorem for ancient solutions, which could be regarded as an entropy counterpart of Yokota's work. In addition, we prove that under some assumptions on one time slice of a complete ancient solution with nonnegative curvature operator, finite asymptotic entropy implies kappa-noncollapsing on all scales. This provides an evidence for Perelman's more general assertion that on a complete ancient solution with nonnegative curvature operator, bounded entropy is equivalent to kappa-noncollapsing.
We show that a complete Ricci flow of bounded curvature which begins from a manifold with a Ricci lower bound, local entropy bound, and small local scale-invariant integral curvature control will have global point-wise curvature control at positive times. As applications, we obtain under similar assumptions a compactness result and a gap theorem for complete noncompact manifolds with nonnegative Ricci Curvature.
We obtain a fundamental gap estimate for classes of bounded domains with quantitative control on the boundary in a complete manifold with integral bounds on the negative part of the Ricci curvature. This extends the result of \cite{Oden-Sung-Wang99} to $L^p$-Ricci curvature assumptions, $p>n/2$. To achieve our result, it is shown that the domains under consideration are John domains, what enables us to obtain an estimate on the first nonzero Neumann eigenvalue, which is of independent interest.
We prove uniform curvature estimates for homogeneous Ricci flows: For a solution defined on $[0,t]$ the norm of the curvature tensor at time $t$ is bounded by the maximum of $C(n)/t$ and $C(n) ( scal(g(t)) - scal(g(0)) )$. This is used to show that solutions with finite extinction time are Type I, immortal solutions are Type III and ancient solutions are Type I, where all the constants involved depend only on the dimension $n$. A further consequence is that a non-collapsed homogeneous ancient solution on a compact homogeneous space emerges from a unique Einstein metric on the same space. The a…
In this short note, using Günther's volume comparison theorem and Yokota's gap theorem on complete shrinking gradient Ricci solitons, we prove that for any complete shrinking gradient Ricci soliton $(M^{n},g,f)$ with sectional curvature $K(g)<A$ and ${\rm Vol}_{f}(M)\geq v$ for some uniform constant $A,v$, there exists a small uniform constant $ε_{n,A,v}>0$ depends only on $n, A$ and $v$, if the scalar curvature $R\leq ε_{n,A,v}$, then $(M,g,f)$ is isometric to the Gaussian soliton $(\mathbb{R}^{n}, g_{E}, \frac{|x|^{2}}{4})$.
In this note we improve a gap result concerning the range of the mean curvature of complete $CMC$ proper-biharmonic hypersurfaces in unit Euclidean spheres.
We find a Simons type formula for submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector (pmc submanifolds) in product spaces $M^n(c)\times\mathbb{R}$, where $M^n(c)$ is a space form with constant sectional curvature $c$, and then we use it to prove a gap theorem for the mean curvature of certain complete proper-biharmonic pmc submanifolds, and classify proper-biharmonic pmc surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^n(c)\times\mathbb{R}$.
In this short note, we find a new gap phenomena on Riemannian manifolds, which says that for any complete noncompact Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature, if the scalar curvature decays faster than quadratically, then it is Ricci flat.
We study stability of the sharp spectral gap bounds for metric-measure spaces satisfying a curvature bound. Our main result, new even in the smooth setting, is a sharp quantitative estimate showing that if the spectral gap of an RCD$(N-1, N)$ space is almost minimal, then the pushforward of the measure by an eigenfunction associated with the spectral gap is close to a Beta distribution. The proof combines estimates on the eigenfunction obtained via a new $L^1$-functional inequality for RCD spaces with Stein's method for distribution approximation. We also derive analogous, almost sharp, estima…
In this paper, we prove a gap result for a locally conformally flat complete non-compact Riemannian manifold with bounded non-negative Ricci curvature and a scalar curvature average condition. We show that if it has positive Green function, then it is flat. This result is proved by setting up new global Yamabe flow. Other extensions related to bounded positive solutions to a schrodinger equation are also discussed.
Modeling of a wide class of physical phenomena, such as crystal growth and flame propagation, leads to tracking fronts moving with curvature-dependent speed. When the speed is the curvature this leads to one of the classical degenerate nonlinear second order differential equations on Euclidean space. One naturally wonders "what is the regularity of solutions?" A priori solutions are only defined in a weak sense, but it turns out that they are always twice differentiable classical solutions. This result is optimal; their second derivative is continuous only in very rigid situations that have a …
By solving the Cauchy problem for the Hodge-Laplace heat equation for $d$-closed, positive $(1, 1)$-forms, we prove an optimal gap theorem for Kähler manifolds with nonnegative bisectional curvature which asserts that the manifold is flat if the average of the scalar curvature over balls of radius $r$ centered at any fixed point $o$ is a function of $o(r^{-2})$. Furthermore via a relative monotonicity estimate we obtain a stronger statement, namely a `positive mass' type result, asserting that if $(M, g)$ is not flat, then $\liminf_{r\to \infty} \frac{r^2}{V_o(r)}\int_{B_o(r)}\mathcal{S}(y)\, …
We study decreasing rearrangements of functions defined on (possibly non-smooth) metric measure spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below by $K>0$ and dimension bounded above by $N\in (1,\infty)$ in a synthetic sense, the so called $CD(K,N)$ spaces. We first establish a Polya-Szego type inequality stating that the $W^{1,p}$-Sobolev norm decreases under such a rearrangement and apply the result to show sharp spectral gap for the $p$-Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions (on open subsets), for every $p\in (1,\infty)$. This extends to the non-smooth setting a classical result of Bér…
