Heterostructures and crystal interfaces play a major role in state-of-the-art semiconductor devices and play a central role in the field of oxide electronics. In oxides the link between the microscopic properties of the interfaces and bulk properties of the resulting heterostructures challenge our fundamental understanding. Insights on the early growth stage of interfaces and its influence on resulting physical properties are scarce -- typically the information is inferred from post growth characterization. Here, we report on real time measurements of the transport properties of SrTiO3-based heterostructures while the crystal heterostructure is forming. Surprisingly, we detect a conducting interface already at the initial growth stage, much earlier than the well-established critical thickness limit for observing conductivity ex-situ after sample growth. We investigate how the conductivity depends on various physical processes occurring during pulsed laser depositions, including light illumination, particle bombardment by the plasma plume, interactions with the atmosphere and oxygen migration from SrTiO3 to the thin films of varying compositions. Using this approach, we propose a new design tool to control the electrical properties of interfaces in real time during their formation.
In-plane thermal conductivity of the thermoelectric layered cobalt oxides has been measured using the Harman method, in which thermal conductivity is obtained from temperature gradient induced by applied current. We have found that the charge reservoir block (the block other than the CoO$_2$ block) dominates the thermal conduction, where a nano-block integration concept is effective for material design. We have further found that the thermal conductivity shows a small but finite in-plane anisotropy between $a$ and $b$ axes, which can be ascribed to the misfit structure.
First-principles calculations of the mayenite-based oxide, [Ca12Al14O32]{2+}(2e-), reveal the mechanism responsible for its high conductivity. A detailed comparison of the electronic and optical properties of this material with those of the recently discovered novel transparent conducting oxide, H-doped UV-activated Ca12Al14O33, allowed us to conclude that the enhanced conductivity in [Ca12Al14O32]{2+}(2e-) is achieved by elimination of the Coulomb blocade of the charge carriers. This results in a transition from variable range hopping behavior with a Coulomb gap in H-doped UV-irradiated Ca12A…
Motivated by the excellent electronic and optoelectronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) tin oxides, we systematically investigated the thermal conductivity of monolayer SnO and SnO2by the first-principles calculations. The room-temperature thermal conductivity of monolayer SnO and SnO2reaches 9.6 W/(mK) and 98.8 W/(mK), respectively. The size effect is much weaker for monolayer SnO than for monolayer SnO2, due to the coexistence of size dependent and independent component in the thermal conductivity of monolayer SnO. The large difference between the thermal conductivity of 2D tin oxides ca…
Combined first-principles and experimental investigations reveal the underlying mechanism responsible for a drastic change of the conductivity (by 10 orders of magnitude) following hydrogen annealing and UV-irradiation in a transparent oxide, 12CaO.7Al2O3, found by Hayashi et al. The charge transport associated with photo-excitation of an electron from H, occurs by electron hopping. We identify the atoms participating in the hops, determine the exact paths for the carrier migration, estimate the temperature behavior of the hopping transport and predict a way to enhance the conductivity by spec…
A compound with metallic electrical conductivity usually has a considerable total thermal conductivity because both electrons and photons contribute to thermal transport. Here, we show an exceptional example of iridium oxide, Bi3Ir3O11, that concurrently displays metallic electrical conductivity and ultralow thermal conductivity approaching 0.61 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K. The compound crystallizes into a cubic structural framework with space group Pn-3. The edge- and corner-sharing IrO6 octahedra with a mixed Ir4.33+ charge state favor metallic electrical transport. Bi3Ir3O11 exhibits an extremely lo…
Lithium titanium oxide Li$_4$Ti$_5$O$_{12}$ (LTO) is an intriguing anode material promising particularly long lived batteries, due to its remarkable phase stability during (dis)charging of the cell. However, its usage is limited by its low intrinsic electronic conductivity. Introducing oxygen vacancies can be one method to overcome this drawback, possibly by altering the charge carrier transport mechanism. We use Hubbard corrected density-functional theory (DFT+U) to show that polaronic states in combination with a possible hopping mechanism can play a crucial role in the experimentally observ…
The data of different authors on the thermal conductivity of wustite Fe1-xO, magnetite F3O4, hematite Fe2O3 and pure iron are systematized. The generalized values are described by piecewise smooth functions containing as varying parameters the temperatures of magnetiv and polymorphic (for iron) transformations as well as the thermodynamic stability boundary (for wustite). At polymorphic transformation a finite break of the thermal conductivity function is envisaged, at othet critical points only a break of its temperature derivative is acceptable. The proposed formulas are presented in two for…
A detailed understanding of the relation between microscopic structure and phonon propagation at the nan oscale is essential to design materials with desired phononic and thermal properties. Here we uncover a new mechanism of phonon interaction in surface oxidized membranes, i.e., native oxide layers interact with phonons in ultra-thin silicon membranes through local resonances. The local resonances reduce the low frequency phonon group velocities and shorten their mean free path. This effect opens up a new strategy for ultralow thermal conductivity design as it complements the scattering mecha…
Electric-field-induced resistance switching (RS) phenomena have been studied for over 60 years in metal/dielectrics/metal structures. In these experiments a wide range of dielectrics have been studied including binary transition metal oxides, perovskite oxides, chalcogenides, carbon- and silicon-based materials, as well as organic materials. RS phenomena can be used to store information and offer an attractive performance, which encompasses fast switching speeds, high scalability, and the desirable compatibility with Si-based complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor fabrication. This is promisi…
Variety of conducting heterointerfaces have been made between SrTiO3 substrates and thin capping layers of distinctly different oxide materials that can be classified into polar band insulators (e.g. LaAlO3), polar Mott insulators (e.g. LaTiO3), apparently non-polar band insulators (e.g. γ-Al2O3), and amorphous oxides (e.g. amorphous SrTiO3). A fundamental question to ask is if there is a common mechanism that governs interfacial conductivity in all these heterointerfaces. Here, we examined the conductivity of different kinds of heterointerfaces by annealing in oxygen and surface treatment wit…
We report persistently increased conduction in ZnO nanowires irradiated by ion beam with various ion energies and species. This effect is shown to be related to the already known persistent photo conduction in ZnO and dubbed persistent ion beam induced conduction. Both effects show similar excitation efficiency, decay rates, and chemical sensitivity. Persistent ion beam induced conduction will potentially allow countable (i.e., single dopant) implantation in ZnO nanostructures and other materials showing persistent photo conduction.
The thermal conductivities of beta-Ga2O3 single crystals along four different crystal directions were measured in the temperature range of 80-495K using the time domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) method. A large anisotropy was found. At room temperature, the [010] direction has the highest thermal conductivity of 27.0+/-2.0 W/mK, while that along the [100] direction has the lowest value of 10.9+/-1.0 W/mK. At high temperatures, the thermal conductivity follows a ~1/T relationship characteristic of Umklapp phonon scattering, indicating phonon-dominated heat transport in the \b{eta}-Ga2O3 crystal.…
The author reports an experimental study of electrical and thermal transport in reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/polystyrene (PS) composites. The electrical conductivity ($σ$) of RGO/PS composites with different RGO concentrations at room temperature shows a percolation behavior with the percolation threshold of ~ 0.25 vol.%. Their temperature-dependent electrical conductivity follows Efros-Shklovskii (ES) variable range hopping (VRH) conduction in the temperature range of 30 to 300 K. The thermal conductivity ($κ$) of composites is enhanced by ~ 90 % as the concentration is increased from 0 to 10…
Oxides with good p-type conductivity have been long sought after to achieve high performance all-oxide optoelectronic devices. Divalent Sn(II) based oxides are promising candidates because of their rather dispersive upper valence bands caused by the Sn-5s/O-2p anti-bonding hybridization. There are so far few known Sn(II) oxides being p-type conductive suitable for device applications. Here, we present via first-principles global optimization structure searches a material design study for a hitherto unexplored Sn(II)-based system, ternary alkaline-earth metal Sn(II) oxides in the stoichiometry …
In-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to study the effect of lattice volume and strain on the proton conductivity of the yttrium-doped barium cerate proton conductor by applying the hydrostatic pressure up to 1.25 GPa. An increase from 0.62 eV to 0.73 eV in the activation energy of the bulk conductivity was found with increasing pressure during a unit cell volume change of 0.7%, confirming a previously suggested correlation between lattice volume and proton diffusivity in the crystal lattice. One strategy worth trying in the future development of the ceramic proton conductors…
Mg batteries with oxide cathodes have the potential to significantly surpass existing Li-ion technologies in terms of sustainability, abundance, and energy density. However, Mg intercalation at the cathode is often severely hampered by the sluggish kinetics of Mg$^{2+}$ migration within oxides. Here we report a combined theoretical and experimental study addressing routes to identify cathode materials with an improved Mg-ion mobility. Using periodic density functional theory calculations, Mg$^{2+}$ migration in oxide spinels has been studied, revealing key features that influence the activatio…
We report high temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD), dc magnetization and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics for the samples of Co$_{2.75}$Fe$_{0.25}$O$_4$ ferrite. The material was prepared by chemical reaction of the Fe and Co nitrate solutions at pH = 11 and subsequent annealing at temperatures 200 0C, 500 0C and 900 0C. The measurements were performed by cycling the temperature from 300 K to high temperature (warming mode) and return back to 300 K (cooling mode). The SXRD patterns indicated a fine bi-phased cubic spinel structure in the highly Co rich spinel oxide. Magnetiza…
Oxide materials exhibit several novel structural, magnetic, and electronic properties. Their stability under ambient conditions, easy synthesis, and high transition temperatures provide such systems with an ideal ground for realizing topological properties and real-life technological applications. However, experimental evidence of topological states in oxide materials is rare. In this study, we have synthesized single crystals of oxide double perovskite Sr2FeMoO6 and revealed its topological nature by investigating its structural, magnetic, and electronic properties. We observed that the syste…
The discovery of conducting two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) and magnetism at the interface between insulating nonmagnetic oxides, as exemplified by the polar LaAlO3 and nonpolar SrTiO3 has raised prospects for attaining interfacial functionalities absent in the component materials. Yet, the microscopic origin of such emergent phenomena remains unclear, posing obstacles to design of improved functionalities. Using first principles defect calculations, we reveal a unifying polarity-induced defect mechanism for both conductivity and magnetism at polar-nonpolar interfaces of nonmagnetic insula…
Tin doped indium oxide (ITO) thin films are being used extensively as transparent conductors in several applications. In the present communication, we report the electrical transport in DC magnetron sputtered ITO thin films in low temperatures (25-300 K). The low temperature Hall effect and resistivity measurements reveal that the ITO thin films are moderately dis-ordered (kfl~1) and degenerate semiconductor. The transport of charge carriers in these disordered ITO thin films takes place via the de-localized states. The disorder effects lead to the well- known metal-insulator transition; this …
The conductive domain wall (CDW) is extensively investigated in ferroelectrics, which can be considered as a quasi-two-dimensional reconfigurable conducting channel embedded into an insulating material. Therefore, it is highly important for the application of ferroelectric nanoelectronics. Hitherto, most CDW investigations are restricted in oxides, and limited work has been reported in non-oxides to the contrary. Here, by successfully synthesizing the non-oxide ferroelectric Sn2P2S6 single crystal, we observed and confirmed the domain wall conductivity by using different scanning probe techniq…
A fundamental understanding of the phonon transport mechanism is important for optimizing the efficiency of thermoelectric devices. In this study, we investigate the thermal transport properties of the oxidized form of phosphorene called phosphorene oxide (PO) by solving phonon Boltzmann transport equation based on first-principles density functional theory. We reveal that PO exhibits a much lower thermal conductivity (2.42-7.08 W/mK, at 300 K) than its pristine counterpart as well as other two-dimensional materials. To comprehend the physical origin of such low thermal conductivity, we scruti…
Entropy stabilization has garnered significant attention as a new approach to designing novel materials. Much of the work in this area has focused on bulk ceramic processing, leaving entropy-stabilized thin films relatively underexplored. Following an extensive multi-variable investigation of polycrystalline (Mg$_{0.2}$Co$_{0.2}$Ni$_{0.2}$Cu$_{0.2}$Zn$_{0.2}$)O thin films deposited via pulsed laser deposition (PLD), it is shown here that substrate temperature and deposition pressure have strong and repeatable effects on film texture and lattice parameter. Further analysis shows that films depo…
Oxides have many potentially desirable characteristics for thermoelectric applications, including low cost and stability at high temperatures, but thus far there are few known high $zT$ $n$-type oxide thermoelectrics. In this work, we use high-throughput first principles calculations to screen transition metal oxides, nitrides, and sulfides for candidate materials with high power factors and low thermal conductivity. We find a variety of promising materials, and we investigate these materials in detail in order to understand the mechanisms that cause them to have high power factors. These mate…
We prepared polycrystalline samples of the A_xBO_2 type layered oxides Na_0.77MnO_2 and LiCoO_2, and measured thermal conductivity from 15 to 280 K. Na0.77MnO_2 shows a low thermal conductivity of 15 mW/cmK, while LiCoO_2 shows a much higher value of 40 mW/cmK at 280 K. By comparing them with the data of NaCo_2O_4, we have found that the low thermal conductivity of A_xBO_2 comes essentially from the A-ion deficiency, not from the layered structure itself.
Spin-dependent charge transport in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) can be manipulated by a temperature gradient, which can be utilized for spintronic and spin caloritronic applications. Evaluation of the thermally induced phenomena requires knowledge of the temperature differences across the oxide tunnel barrier adjacent to the ferromagnetic (FM) leads. However, it is challenging to accurately measure thermal properties of an oxide tunnel barrier consisting of only a few atomic layers. In this work, we experimentally interrogate the temperature evolutions in Ru/oxide/FM/seed/MgO (oxide=MgO, M…
We present a novel approach to reduce the thermal conductivity ($κ$) in thermoelectric composite materials using acoustic impedance mismatch and the Debye model. Also, the correlation between interface thermal resistance (R$_{int}$) and the particle size of the dispersed phase on the k of the composite is discussed. In particular, the $κ$ of an oxide composite which consists of a natural superlattice Aurivillius phase (SrBi$_4$Ti$_4$O$_{15}$) as a matrix and perovskite (La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$) as a dispersed phase is investigated. A significant reduction in the $κ$ of composite, even lowe…
Design novel solid oxide electrolyte with enhanced ionic conductivity forms one of the Holy Grails in the field of materials science due to its great potential for wide range of energy applications. Conventional solid oxide electrolyte typically requires elevated temperature to activate the ionic transportation, while it has been increasing research interests to reduce the operating temperature due to the associated scientific and technological importance. Here, we report a conceptually new solid oxide electrolyte, HSrCoO2.5, which shows an exceptional enhanced proton conductivity at low tempe…
Combination of electrical conductivity and optical transparency in the same material -- known to be a prerogative of only a few oxides of post-transition metals, such as In, Sn, Zn and Cd -- manifests itself in a distinctive band structure of the transparent conductor host. While the oxides of other elements with $s^2$ electronic configuration, for example, Mg, Ca, Sc and Al, also exhibit the desired optical and electronic features, they have not been considered as candidates for achieving good electrical conductivity because of the challenges of efficient carrier generation in these wide-band…
Resistance Random Access Memory (RRAMTM) device, with its electrically induced nanoscale resistive switching capacity, has been gaining considerable attention as future non-volatile memory device. Here, we propose a mechanism of switching based on oxygen vacancy migration-driven change in electronic properties of the transition metal oxide (TMO) film stimulated by set pulse voltages. We used density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations to account for the effect of oxygen vacancy and its migration on the electronic properties of HfO2 and Ta/HfO2 systems, and thereby create the entire stor…
Silicon carbide silicon carbide (SiC SiC) composites are often used in oxidizing environments at high temperatures. Measurements of the thermal conductance of the oxide layer provide a way to better understand the oxidation process with high spatial resolution. We use time domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) to map the thermal conductance of the oxide layer and the thermal conductivity of the SiC SiC composite with a spatial resolution of 3 μm. Heterodyne detection using a 50 kHz modulated probe beam and a 10 MHz modulated pump suppresses the coherent pick-up and enables faster data acquisition th…
Using finite-temperature phonon calculations and machine-learning methods, we calculate the mechanical stability of about 400 semiconducting oxides and fluorides with cubic perovskite structures at 0 K, 300 K and 1000 K. We find 92 mechanically stable compounds at high temperatures -- including 36 not mentioned in the literature so far -- for which we calculate the thermal conductivity. We demonstrate that the thermal conductivity is generally smaller in fluorides than in oxides, largely due to a lower ionic charge, and describe simple structural descriptors that are correlated with its magnit…
In this study, we report on face-centered cubic structured CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy thin films with finely dispersed nano-oxide particles which are formed by internal oxidation. Analytical scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging found that the particles are Cr2O3. The oxide particles contribute to the hardening of the film increasing its hardness by 14% compared to that of the film without precipitates, through the Orowan-type strengthening mechanism. Our novel approach paves the way to design medium- and high-entropy alloys with high strength by making use of oxide phases.
In this study, we demonstrated experimentally that formation of chains and islands of oxygen vacancies in hafnium sub-oxides (HfO$_x$, $x<2$) leads to percolation charge transport in such dielectrics. Basing on the model of Éfros-Shklovskii percolation theory good quantitative agreement between the experimental and theoretical data of current-voltage characteristics were achieved. Based on the percolation theory suggested model shows that hafnium sub-oxides consist of mixtures of metallic Hf nanoscale clusters of 1-2 nm distributed onto non-stoichiometric HfO$_x$. It was shown that reported ap…
The investigation of the defect chemistry of solid oxides is of central importance for the understanding of redox processes. This can be performed by measuring conductivity as a function of the oxygen partial pressure, which is conventionally established by using buffer gas mixtures or oxygen pumps based on zirconia. However, this approach has some limitations, such as difficulty regulating oxygen partial pressure in some intermediate-pressure regions or the possibility of influencing the redox process by gases that can also be incorporated into the oxide or react with the surface via heteroge…

Alpha-Fe2O3 and alpha-Cr2O3 has been mechanical alloyed to prepare Fe1-xCrxO3 oxides for x = 0.2-0.8. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra have shown inhomogeneous structure of α-Fe2O3 and α-Cr2O3 phases in as-alloyed samples. The as-alloyed samples have shown soft ferromagnetic properties with signature of two Morin transitions. The heat treatment of as-alloyed samples has homogenized structure and successfully incorporated the Cr atoms into the lattice sites of Fe atoms in α-Fe2O3. The magnetic and electrical properties have been modified in the heat treated samples. For example, …
The application of weak electric fields (<~ 100 V/cm) is found to dramatically enhance the lattice thermal conductivity of the antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator CaMnO(3) over a broad range of temperature about the Neel ordering point (125 K). The effect is coincident with field-induced de-trapping of bound electrons, suggesting that phonon scattering associated with short- and long-ranged AF order is suppressed in the presence of the mobilized charge. This interplay between bound charge and spin-phonon coupling might allow for the reversible control of spin fluctuations using weak external fiel…
We investigated thermal conductivity of free-standing reduced graphene oxide films subjected to a high-temperature treatment of up to 1000 C. It was found that the high-temperature annealing dramatically increased the in-plane thermal conductivity, K, of the films from 3 W/mK to 61 W/mK at room temperature. The cross-plane thermal conductivity, Kc, revealed an interesting opposite trend of decreasing to a very small value of 0.09 W/mK in the reduced graphene oxide films annealed at 1000 C. The obtained films demonstrated an exceptionally strong anisotropy of the thermal conductivity, K/Kc ~ 67…
Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) are essential to many technologies. These materials are doped (\emph{n}- or \emph{p}-type) oxides with a large enough band gap (ideally $>$3~eV) to ensure transparency. However, the high carrier concentration present in TCOs lead additionally to the possibility for optical transitions from the occupied conduction bands to higher states for \emph{n}-type materials and from lower states to the unoccupied valence bands for \emph{p}-type TCOs. The "second gap" formed by these transitions might limit transparency and a large second gap has been sometimes propose…
To visualize the topography of thin oxide films during growth, thereby enabling to study its growth behavior quasi real-time, we have designed and integrated an atomic force microscope (AFM) in a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) vacuum setup. The AFM scanner and PLD target are integrated in a single support frame, combined with a fast sample transfer method, such that in-situ microscopy can be utilized after subsequent deposition pulses. The in-situ microscope can be operated from room temperature (RT) up to 700$^\circ$C and at (process) pressures ranging from the vacuum base pressure of 10$^{-6}…
Recent experimental reports on in-plane proton conduction in reduced graphene oxide (rGO) films open a new way for the design of proton exchange membrane essential in fuel cells and chemical filters. At high humidity condition, water molecules attached on the rGO sheet are expected to play a critical role, but theoretical works for such phenomena have been scarcely found in the literature. In this study, we investigate the proton migration on water-adsorbed monolayer and bilayer rGO sheets using first-principles calculations in order to reveal the mechanism. We devise a series of models for th…
The use of oxide glasses is pervasive throughout everyday amenities and commodities. Such glasses are typically electrical insulators, and endowing them with electrical conductivity without changing their salutary mechanical properties, weight, or thermoformability enables new applications in multifunctional utensils, smart windows, and automotive parts. Previous strategies to impart electrical conductivity include modifying the glass composition or forming a solid-in-solid composite of the glass and a conductive phase. Here we demonstrate using the latter strategy the highest reported room-te…
ASnO3 (A=Ba, Sr) are unique perovskite oxides in that they have superior electron conductivity despite their wide optical band gaps. Using first-principles band structure calculations, we show that the small electron effective masses, thus, good electron conductivity of ASnO3 can be attributed to the large size of Sn in this system that gives the conduction band edge with antibonding Sn and O s characters. Moreover, we show that ASnO3 can be easily doped by La with shallow LaA(+/0) donor level. Our results, therefore, explained why the perovskite BaSnO3, SrSnO3, and their alloys are promising …
Atom probe tomography is routinely used for the characterisation of materials microstructures usually assuming that the microstructure is unaltered by the analysis. When analysing ionic conductors, however, gradients in the chemical potential and the electric field penetrating dielectric atom probe specimens can cause significant ionic mobility. While ionic mobility is undesired when aiming for materials characterisation it offers a strategy to manipulate materials directly in-situ in the atom probe. Here, we present experimental results on the analysis of the ionic conductor Lithium-Manganese…
Unraveling impacts of polycrystalline microstructures on ionic conductivity of ceramic electrolytes by computational homogenization and machine learning
Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS) measurements of Pοlyaniline/Graphene oxide composites were conducted for an as-prepared and a thermally annealed specimen, respectively, from 15K to room temperature. Electrical conductivity values of the annealed composite display a very modest rise denoting the important contributions of the GO component to achieving electrical stability of the polymer. Patterns of the dc conductivity as a function of temperature also reveal a metal to insulator transition around 75K. The transition is dominated by two key factors; temperature and annealing process. Me…
We report a chemical free method for the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) thin films. It was observed how for GO films annealed in air the oxygen species desorb from the GO surface upon exposure to UV light and how the surface resistivity of such deoxygenated GO films decreases with increasing the exposure to the UV light. The obtained results open a clean as well as easy route for the integration of GO based materials into optoelectronic devices.
The effect of silica-promotion on the reduction of iron oxides in hydrogen was investigated using in situ X-ray diffraction and aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy to understand the mechanism of reduction and the identity of the iron(II) silicate phase that has historically been designated as the cause of the iron-silica interaction in such materials. In the absence of a silica promoter the reduction of hematite to α-Fe proceeds via magnetite. Silica promoted amorphous iron oxide is reduced to α-Fe via stable magnetite and wüstite phases. During reduction of silica-promoted i…
The authors report in situ Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) of the surfaces of complex oxides thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The authors demonstrate the utility of the technique in studying chemical composition by collecting characteristic Auger spectra of elements from samples such as complex oxide thin films and single crystals as well as metal foils. In the case of thin films, AES studies can be performed with single unit cell precision by monitoring thickness during deposition with reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED). The authors address some of the cha…
The Zn K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been used to investigate in situ the decomposition of zinc peroxide (ZnO$_2$) to zinc oxide (ZnO). Principal component and linear combination analyses of the EXAFS spectra have been employed to identify the phase composition of the oxide upon heating to 900$^\circ$C. Only the ZnO$_2$ phase has been found up to 180$^\circ$C, whereas only the nanocrystalline ZnO phase has occurred above 250$^\circ$C. Detailed structural information on the temperature dependence of the local environment of zinc atoms has been obtained using the reverse Monte Carlo s…
A study of impedance spectroscopy was done for the electrical characterization of pyrochlore materials. The experiment consisted of measurements of the dependence of the impedance of such systems with the temperature during heating (25 to 110 °C) and cooling (110 to 25 °C). The goal was to try to avoid the effect of humidity in the impedance spectrum. However, for the sample with x = 0.20, we get an anomalous response of the conductivity during the cooling process. To explain this result, we performed micro-structure characterization in this sample and in the samples with x = 0.80 and 0.67. Th…
The highly conductive layered metallic oxide \pdcoo{} is a near-perfect analogue to an alkali metal in two dimensions. It is distinguished from other two-dimensional electron systems where the Fermi surface does not reach the Brillouin zone boundary by a high planar electron density exceeding $10^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$. The simple single-band quasi-2D electronic structure results in strongly anisotropic transport properties and limits the effectiveness of electron-phonon scattering. Measurements on single crystals in the temperature range from 10-300K show that the thermal conductivity is much more w…
