The application of weak electric fields (<~ 100 V/cm) is found to dramatically enhance the lattice thermal conductivity of the antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator CaMnO(3) over a broad range of temperature about the Neel ordering point (125 K). The effect is coincident with field-induced de-trapping of bound electrons, suggesting that phonon scattering associated with short- and long-ranged AF order is suppressed in the presence of the mobilized charge. This interplay between bound charge and spin-phonon coupling might allow for the reversible control of spin fluctuations using weak external fields.
Low-temperature transport and magnetization measurements for the antiferromagnets SrMnO(3) and CaMnO(3) identify an impurity band of mobile states separated by energy E from electrons bound in Coulombic potentials. Very weak electric fields are sufficient to excite bound electrons to the impurity band, increasing the mobile carrier concentration by more than three orders of magnitude. The data argue against the formation of self-trapped magnetic polarons (MPs) predicted by theory, and rather imply that bound MPs become stable only for kT<<E.
A direct correlation is seen between the coercive field (HC) and the magnetic-field-dependent resistivity (MR) in SrMnO3/SrRuO3 superlattices of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The magnetoresistance shows a sharp jump at Hc for in-plane current and the out-of-plane magnetic field. Both HC and high-field MR also oscillate with the thickness of the SrMnO3 spacer layers separating the metallic ruthenate. Since the spacer in these superlattices has no mobile carriers to facilitate an oscillatory coupling, we attribute the observed behavior to the spin-polarized quantum tunneling of electrons be…
Hydrostatic pressure effects on the temperature- and magnetic field dependencies of the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetization of the bi-layered perovskite Sr3Ru2O7 have been studied by SQUID magnetometer measurements under a hydrostatic helium-gas pressure. The anomalously enhanced low-temperature value of the paramagnetic susceptibility has been found to systematically decrease with increasing pressure. The effect is accompanied by an increase of the temperature Tmax of a pronounced peak of susceptibility. Thus, magnetization measurements under hydrostatic pressure reveal that the lattice c…
We study the lattice dynamics of antiferromagnetic transition-metal oxides by using self-consistent Hubbard functionals. We calculate the ground states of the oxides with the on-site and intersite Hubbard interactions determined self-consistently within the framework of density functional theory. The on-site and intersite Hubbard terms fix the errors associated with the electron self-interaction in the local and semilocal functionals. Inclusion of the intersite Hubbard terms in addition to the on-site Hubbard terms produces accurate phonon dispersion of the transition-metal oxides. Calculated …
The mean-field phase diagram of antiferromagnetic order in t-J model has been examined, using the free energy obtained by Ginzburg-Landau (GL) expansion. We extended the usual GL theory in two ways: First, we have included higher order terms with respect to the spatial derivative (or wave number) to incorporate the incommensurate antiferromagnetic order. Second, we have also included higher order terms with respect to the order parameter amplitude, in order to treat the first order phase transition between paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phase, which appears at some doping rates. We found t…
We investigate the frustrated magnetic interactions in cubic transition metal oxides with orbital degeneracy. The $e_g$ orbitals order easier and their ordering explains the $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase in KCuF$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$. In $t_{2g}$ systems the magnetic order changes at a transition from an orbital liquid to orbital ordered states. The fluctuations of $t_{2g}$ orbitals play a prominent role in LaVO$_3$ and YVO$_3$, where they compete with the Jahn-Teller effect and trigger the C-type antiferromagnetic order.
Within the fermion-spin theory, the physical properties of the electron pairing state in the copper oxide materials are discussed. According to the common form of the electron Cooper pair, it is shown that there is a coexistence of the electron Cooper pair and magnetic short-range correlation, and hence the antiferromagnetic short-range correlation can persist into the superconducting state. Moreover, the mean-field results indicate that the electron pairing state originating from the pure magnetic interaction in the two-dimensional t-J model is the local state, and then does not reveal the tr…
An electron-phonon interaction arising from the modulation of the superexchange interaction by phonons is studied within the theoretical framework of Kondo lattices. It is relevant in strongly correlated electron liquids in cuprate oxide superconductors, which lie in the vicinity of the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition. It is enhanced by antiferromagnetic and superconducting fluctuations, which are developed mainly because of the superexchange interaction. When the enhancement of the electron-phonon interaction is large enough, it can explain the softening of phonons and kinks in the qu…
Combining infrared reflectivity, transport, susceptibility and several diffraction techniques, we find compelling evidence that CaCrO3 is a rare case of a metallic and antiferromagnetic transition-metal oxide with a three-dimensional electronic structure. LSDA calculations correctly describe the metallic behavior as well as the anisotropic magnetic ordering pattern of C type: The high Cr valence state induces via sizeable pd hybridization remarkably strong next-nearest neighbor interactions stabilizing this ordering. The subtle balance of magnetic interactions gives rise to magneto-elastic cou…
Specific heat measurements were carried out on the closely related spin-chain oxides Ca3Co2O6 and Ca3CoRhO6. Both compounds consist of Ising magnetic chains that are arranged on a triangular lattice. The spin coupling along and between the chains are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively. Geometrical frustration is expected from the combination of these magnetic features. The present study reports that the specific heat data of these compounds exhibit similarities in the spin-freezing process at low T, whereas striking differences exist in the antiferromagnetic interchain ordering …
Using elastic neutron scattering, we evidence a commensurate antiferromagnetic Cu(2) order (AF) in the superconducting (SC) high-$\rm T_c$ cuprate $\rm YBa_2(Cu_{1-y}Co_y)_3O_{7+δ}$ (y=0.013, $\rm T_c$=93 K). As in the Co-free system, the spin excitation spectrum is dominated by a magnetic resonance peak at 41 meV but with a reduced spectral weight. The substitution of Co thus leads to a state where AF and SC cohabit showing that the CuO$_2$ plane is a highly antiferromagnetically polarizable medium even for a sample where T$_c$ remains optimum.
Within the framework of the QED3 theory of cuprates it is argued that bulk antiferromagnetic (AF) order can coexist with d-wave superconductivity in the underdoped region, in agreement with recent experiments. The AF order arises from the phase fluctuating d-wave superconductor via the mechanism of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, provided that fluctuations are sufficiently strong. The phase diagram for this coexistence is mapped out by means of analytical and numerical solutions of the underlying Dyson-Schwinger equation in the large N limit.
The magnetic order and the spin dynamics in the antiferromagnetic entropy-stabilized oxide (Mg$_{0.2}$Co$_{0.2}$Ni$_{0.2}$Cu$_{0.2}$Zn$_{0.2}$)O (MgO-ESO) have been studied using muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering. We find that antiferromagnetic order develops gradually in the sample volume as it is cooled below 140 K, becoming fully ordered around 100 K. The spin dynamics show a critical slowing down in the vicinity of the transition, and the magnetic order parameter grows continuously in the ordered state. These results indicate that the antiferromagnetic transitio…
Li5OsO6 and Li5ReO6 polycrystalline samples were synthesized by conventional solid state methods. Employing powder neutron diffraction data, the crystal structure of Li5OsO6 was re-investigated. Li5OsO6 crystallizes in C2/m space group in an ordered NaCl structure type where a = 5.0472(1) A, b = 8.7827(2) A, c = 5.0079(1) A, Beta = 109.777(2) degree and V = 208.90(1).A^3 Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data indicate an AFM long range order below 40K although there is evidence for low dimensional short range order above 80K. As well, the frustration index, f = |theta|/TN ~1, in contra…
Magnetic interfaces and the phenomena arising from them drive both the design of modern spintronics and fundamental research. Recently, it was revealed that through designing magnetic frustration in configurationally complex entropy stabilized oxides, exchange bias can occur in structurally single crystal films. This eliminates the need for complex heterostructures and nanocomposites in the design and control of magnetic response phenomena. In this work, we demonstrate through hole doping of a high entropy perovskite oxide that tuning of magnetic responses can be achieved. With detailed magnet…
Measurements of the static magnetic susceptibility and of the nuclear magnetic resonance of multiwalled vanadium-oxide nanotubes are reported. In this nanoscale magnet the structural low-dimensionality and mixed valency of vanadium ions yield a complex temperature dependence of the static magnetization and the nuclear relaxation rates. Analysis of the different contributions to the magnetism allows to identify individual interlayer magnetic sites as well as strongly antiferromagnetically coupled vanadium spins (S = 1/2) in the double layers of the nanotube's wall. In particular, the data give …
Several M3 TeO6 (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu) oxides order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures (near or below 60 K), while displaying interesting dielectric properties at high temperatures (ferroelectricity below 1000 K in M = Ni case). We have investigated and analyzed the structural and magnetic properties of Mn-doped Co3 TeO6 and Ni3 TeO6, which order antiferromagnetically at temperatures higher than their undoped counterparts.
The (001) surface of NiO, an antiferromagnet at room temperature, was investigated under ultra-high vacuum conditions with frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM). The antiferromagnetic coupling between ions leads to a spin superstructure on (001) surfaces. Exchange interaction between the probe of a force microscope and the NiO (001) surface should allow to image spin superstructures in real space. The surface was imaged with three different probing tips: nonmagnetic W tips, ferromagnetic Co tips and antiferromagnetic NiO tips - and atomic resolution was achieved with all three …
A comprehensive theoretical and experimental study is presented of the magnetic susceptibility versus temperature χ(T) of spin S = 1/2 two- and three-leg Heisenberg ladders and ladder oxide compounds. Extensive quantum Monte Carlo simulations of χ(T) were carried out for both isolated and coupled two-leg ladders with spatially anisotropic intraladder exchange. Accurate fits to these and related literature QMC data were obtained. We have also calculated the one- and two-magnon dispersion relations and the dynamical spin structure factor for anisotropic isolated 2 x 12 ladders. The exchange cons…
The material class of rare earth nickelates with high Ni$^{3+}$ oxidation state is generating continued interest due to the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition with charge order and the appearance of non-collinear magnetic phases within this insulating regime. The recent theoretical prediction for superconductivity in LaNiO$_3$ thin films has also triggered intensive research efforts. LaNiO$_3$ seems to be the only rare earth nickelate that stays metallic and paramagnetic down to lowest temperatures. So far, centimetre-sized impurity-free single crystal growth has not been reported for …
From the first-principles calculations, we have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of compound Na$_2$Ti$_2$Pn$_2$O (Pn = As or Sb). We find that in the ground state Na$_2$Ti$_2$As$_2$O is a blocked checkerboard antiferromagnetic semiconductor with a small band gap of about 0.15 eV, in contrast, Na$_2$Ti$_2$Sb$_2$O is a bi-collinear antiferromagnetic semimetal, both with a small moment of about 0.5$μ_B$ around each Ti atom. We show that there is a strong Fermi surface nesting in Na$_2$Ti$_2$Pn$_2$O. And we verify that the blocked checkerboard and bi-collinear antiferromagnetic state…
Extensive Cu-NMR studies on multilayered high-Tc cuprates have deduced the following results;(1) Antiferromagnetic (AFM) moment M_{AFM} is decreased with doping, regardless of the number of CuO_2 layers n, and collapses around a carrier density N_h = 0.17. (2) The AFM ordering temperature is enhanced as the out-of-plane coupling J_{out} increases with increasing n. (3) The in-plane superexchange J_{in} is invariant with doping, but is even increased. (4) The dome shape of T_c from the underdoped to the overdoped regime with a maximum T_c at N_h = 0.22 does not depend on n, but its maximum valu…
This paper reviews the present understanding of the origin of ferromagnetic response of diluted magnetic semiconductors and diluted magnetic oxides as well as in some nominally magnetically undoped materials. It is argued that these systems can be grouped into four classes. To the first belong composite materials in which precipitations of a known ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic or antiferromagnetic compound account for magnetic characteristics at high temperatures. The second class forms alloys showing chemical nano-scale phase separation into the regions with small and large concentrations of t…
Oscillations in the exchange coupling between ferromagnetic $La_{2/3}Ba_{1/3}MnO_3$ layers with paramagnetic $LaNiO_3$ spacer layer thickness has been observed in epitaxial heterostructures of the two oxides. This behavior is explained within the RKKY model employing an {\it ab initio} calculated band structure of $LaNiO_3$, taking into account strong electron scattering in the spacer. Antiferromagnetically coupled superlattices exhibit a positive current-in-plane magnetoresistance.
The transport properties of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model in one dimension are studied via bosonization methods. The antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which normally appear because of the RKKY interactions, are explicitly taken into account as a direct exchange between the ``core'' spins. It is shown that in the paramagnetic regime with the local antiferromagnetic fluctuations, the resistivity decays exponentially as the temperature increases while in the ferromagnetic regime the system is an almost perfect conductor. %A non-perturbative description of localized spin polarons %in the par…
Spin correlations in metallic and insulating phases of $V_2O_3$ and its derivatives are investigated using magnetic neutron scattering. Metallic samples have incommensurate spin correlations varying little with hole doping. Paramagnetic insulating samples have spin correlations only among near neighbors. The transition from either of these phases into the low temperature insulating antiferromagnetic phase is accompanied by an abrupt change of dynamic magnetic short range order. Our results support the idea that the transition into the antiferromagnetic insulator is also an orbital ordering tra…
Field-induced magnetization jumps with similar characteristics are observed at low temperature for the intermetallic germanide Gd5Ge4and the mixed-valent manganite Pr0.6Ca0.4Mn0.96Ga0.04O3. We report that the field location -and even the existence- of these jumps depends critically on the magnetic field sweep rate used to record the data. It is proposed that, for both compounds, the martensitic character of their antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transitions is at the origin of the magnetization steps.
To compare the superconductivity in strongly correlated electron systems with the antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the copper oxides and with the ferromagnetic fluctuations in Sr_2RuO_4 a t-J-I model is proposed. The antiferromagnetic coupling J results in the superconducting state of d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry and the ferromagnetic coupling constant I results in the spin-triplet p-type state. The difference in the gap anisotropies provides the large difference in T_c values, for the typical values of the coupling constants: T_c of order of 1K for the ruthenate and T_c of order of 100K for the cupr…
We report results of NMR experiments on the ruthenium oxide Hg2Ru2O7 with the pyrochlore structure, which exhibits a metal-insulator transition at TMI = 107 K. In the metallic phase above TMI, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 and the Knight shift at the Hg sites follow the Korringa relation, indicating the absence of substantial spatial spin correlation. At low temperatures in the insulating phase, 99,101Ru-NMR signals are observed at zero magnetic field, providing evidence for a commensurate antiferromagnetic order. The estimated ordered moment is about 1 muB per Ru, much smaller…
We present transport and thermal data for the quadruple-perovskites MCu3(Ti1-xRux)4O12 where 0 < x < 1. A metal-insulator transition (MIT) occurs for Ru concentrations x~0.75. At the same time, the Cu2+ antiferromagnetic state is destroyed and it's magnetic entropy suppressed by Ru on a 1:1 basis. This implies that each Ru transfers an electron to a Cu ion and thus the MIT correlates with filling the Cu 3d shell. The Cu spin entropy in this strongly correlated electron material provides a unique probe among MIT systems.
We have investigated the structural and magnetic transitions in CsCoO$_2$ using calorimetric measurements, neutron powder diffraction (NPD), density functional theory (DFT) calculations and muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. CsCoO$_2$ exhibits three-dimensional long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at 424~K, resulting in antiferromagnetic alignment of chains of ferromagnetically ordered Co-Co spin dimers. Although there is no change in magnetic structure around a structural transition at $T^{*}=100$~K, the resulting bifurcation of corner-shared Co--O--Co bond angles causes a weakeni…
Transition metal oxides are well known for their complex magnetic and electrical properties. When brought together in heterostructure geometries, they show particular promise for spintronics and colossal magnetoresistance applications. In this letter, we propose a new mechanism for the coupling between layers of itinerant ferromagnetic materials in heterostructures. The coupling is mediated by charge carriers that strive to maximally delocalize through the heterostructure to gain kinetic energy. In doing so, they force a ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic coupling between the constituent layer…
A novel metallic and magnetic transition metal oxide Ag2NiO2 is studied by means of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure is characterized by alternating stacking of a Ni3+O2 layer and a (Ag2)+ layer, the former realizing a spin-1/2 triangular lattice with eg orbital degeneracy and the latter providing itinerant electrons. It is found that the NiO2 layer exhibits orbital ordering at Ts = 260 K and antiferromagnetic spin ordering at TN = 56 K. Moreover, a moderately large mass enhancement is found for the itinerant electrons, suggesting…
Atomically sharp oxide heterostructures often exhibit unusual physical properties that are absent in the constituent bulk materials. The interplay between electrostatic boundary conditions, strain and dimensionality in ultrathin epitaxial films can result in monolayer-scale transitions in electronic or magnetic properties. Here we report an atomically sharp antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition when atomically growing polar antiferromagnetic LaMnO3 (001) films on SrTiO3 substrates. For a thickness of five unit cells or less, the films are antiferromagnetic, but for six unit cells…
We report a detailed investigation of magnetization, magnetocaloric effect and exchange bias studies on a mixed metal oxide YFe0.5Cr0.5O3 belonging to perovskite family. Our results reveal that the compound is in canted magnetic state (CMS) where ferromagnetic correlations are present in an antiferromagnetic state. Magnetic entropy change of this compound follows a power law (deltaS_M ~ H^m) dependence of magnetic field. In this compound, inverse magnetocaloric effect (IMCE) is observed below 260 K while conventional magnetocaloric effect (CMCE) above it. The exponent m is found to be independ…
Holes doped within the square CuO2 network specific to the cuprate superconducting materials have oxygen 2p character. We investigate the basic properties of such oxygen holes by wavefunction-based quantum chemical calculations on large embedded clusters. We find that a 2p hole induces ferromagnetic correlations among the nearest-neighbor Cu 3d spins. When moving through the antiferromagnetic background the hole must bring along this spin polarization cloud at nearby Cu sites, which gives rise to a substantial reduction of the effective hopping parameters. Such interactions can explain the rel…
The results of ac and dc magnetization and heat capacity measurements on the oxides, Ca$_3$Co$_{1+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$O$_6$, forming in a K$_4$CdCl$_6$-derived rhombohedral quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure, are reported. As far as Ca$_3$Co$_2$O$_6$ is concerned, the results reveal truly complex nature of the two magnetic transitions, identified to set in at 24 and 12 K in the previous literature. However, partial replacement of Co by Mn apparently results in a long magnetic ordering of an antiferromagnetic type (below 13 and 18 K for x= 0.0 and 0.25 respectively), instead of spin-glass freezin…
Atomically flat interfaces between ternary oxides have chemically different variants, depending on the terminating lattice planes of both oxides. Electronic properties change with the interface termination which affects, for instance, charge accumulation and magnetic interactions at the interface. Well-defined terminations have yet rarely been achieved for oxides of ABO3 type (with metals A, B). Here, we report on a strategy of thin film growth and interface characterization applied to fabricate the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3-SrRuO3 interface with controlled termination. Ultra-strong antiferromagnetic cou…
The entropy stabilized oxide Mg$_{0.2}$Co$_{0.2}$Ni$_{0.2}$Cu$_{0.2}$Zn$_{0.2}$O exhibits antiferromagnetic order and magnetic excitations, as revealed by recent neutron scattering experiments. This observation raises the question of the nature of spin wave excitations in such disordered systems. Here, we investigate theoretically the magnetic ground state and the spin-wave excitations using linear spin-wave theory in combination with the supercell approximation to take into account the extreme disorder in this magnetic system. We find that the experimentally observed antiferromagnetic structu…
We present our theoretical results on the mechanism of two transitions in vanadium spinel oxides $A$V$_2$O$_4$ ($A$=Zn, Mg, or Cd) in which magnetic V cations constitute a geometrically-frustrated pyrochlore structure. We have derived an effective spin-orbital-lattice coupled model in the strong correlation limit of the multiorbital Hubbard model, and applied Monte Carlo simulation to the model. The results reveal that the higher-temperature transition is a layered antiferro-type orbital ordering accompanied by tetragonal Jahn-Teller distortion, and the lower-temperature transition is an antif…
We study theoretically the electronic states in a $5d$ transition metal oxide Na$_2$IrO$_3$, in which both the spin-orbit interaction and the electron correlation play crucial roles. Tight-binding model analysis together with the fisrt-principles band structure calculation predicts that this material is a layered quantum spin Hall system. Due to the electron correlation, an antiferromagnetic order first develops at the edge, and later inside the bulk at low temperatures.
Hydrogen exhibits qualitatively different charge states depending on the host material, as nicely explained by the state-of-the-art impurity-state calculation. Motivated by a recent experiment [Nature 546, 124 (2017)], we show that the complex oxide SrCoO$_{2.5}$ represents an interesting example, in which the interstitial H appears as a deep-level center according to the commonly-used transition level calculation, but no bound electron can be found around the impurity. Via a combination of charge difference analysis, density of states projection and constraint magnetization calculation, it tu…
We derived simple rules for the sign of superexchange interaction based on the multielectron calculations of the superexchange interaction in the transition metal oxides that are valid both below and above spin crossover under high pressure. The superexchange interaction between two cations in d$^n$ configurations is given by a sum of individual contributions related to the electron-hole virtual excitations to the different states of the d$^{n + 1}$ and d$^{n - 1}$ configurations. Using these rules, we have analyzed the sign of the superexchange interaction of a number of oxides with magnetic …
The novel spin-chain cobalt oxide Sr5Pb3CoO12 [P-62m, a = 10.1093(2) A and c = 3.562 51(9) A at 295 K] is reported. Polycrystalline sample of the compound was studied by neutron diffraction (at 6 and 295 K) and magnetic susceptibility measurements (5 to 390 K). The cobalt oxide was found to be analogous to the copper oxide Sr5Pb3CoO12, which is comprised of magnetic-linear chains at inter-chain distance of 10 A. Although the cobalt oxide chains (mu_eff of 3.64 mu_B per Co) are substantially antiferromagnetic (theta_W = -38.8 K), neither low-dimensional magnetism nor long-range ordering has bee…
A quasi-one dimensional magnetism was discovered in the post-perovskite CaRuO3 (Ru4+: 4d4, Cmcm), which is iso-compositional with the perovskite CaRuO3 (Pbnm). An antiferromagnetic spin-chain function with -J/kB = 350 K well reproduces the experimental curve of the magnetic susceptibility vs. temperature, suggesting long-range antiferromagnetic correlations. The anisotropic magnetism is probably owing to the dyz - 2p- dzx and dzx - 2p- dyz superexchange bonds along a-axis. The Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat is fairly small, 0.16(2) mJ mol-1 K-2, indicating that the magnetism refle…
Charge and orbital ordering behaviors in the half doped bi-layered compound LaSr2Mn2O7 have been studied by resonant and non-resonant X-ray scattering. Three different order parameters, which correspond to the A-type antiferromagnetic, a charge and an orbital ordered states, were observed by measuring the magnetostriction and the superlattice peaks characterized by wavevectors (1/2 1/2 0) and (1/4 1/4 0), respectively. The superlattice reflections indicating the charge and orbital ordered states were observed below 210 K. Both the intensities reach a maximum at 160 K on cooling and become very…
We study theoretically the phase diagram of perovskite manganites taking into account the double degeneracy of the $e_g$ orbitals in a $Mn^{3+}$ ion. A rich phase diagram is obtained in the mean field theory at zero temperature as functions of $x$ (hole concentration) and $J_S$ (antiferromagnetic interaction between $t_{2g}$ spins). The global features of the phase diagram is understood in terms of the superexchange and double exchange interactions, which are strongly depends on types of the occupied $e_g$ orbitals. The strong electron correlation induces the orbital polarization, which contro…
Tailoring transport properties of strongly correlated electron systems in a controlled fashion counts among the dreams of materials scientists. In copper oxides, varying the carrier concentration is a tool to obtain high-temperature superconducting phases. In manganites, doping results in exotic physics such as insulator-metal transitions (IMT), colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), orbital- or charge-ordered (CO) or charge-disproportionate (CD) states. In most oxides, antiferromagnetic order and charge-disproportionation are asssociated with insulating behavior. Here we report the realization of …
We investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of the pyrochlore oxide Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ using the density-functional theory plus on-site repulsion ($U$) method, and depict the ground-state phase diagram with respect to $U$. We conclude that the all-in/all-out non-collinear magnetic order is stable in a wide range of $U$. We also show that the easy-axis anisotropy arising from the spin-orbit (SO) coupling plays a significant role in stabilizing the all-in/all-out magnetic order. A \textit{pseudo gap} was observed near the transition between the antiferromagnetic metallic and insulating…
Recent neutron diffraction studies have yielded evidence that, in a particular cuprate family, holes doped into the CuO(2) planes segregate into stripes that separate antiferromagnetic domains. Here it is shown that such a picture provides a quantitatively consistent interpretation of the spin fluctuations measured by neutron scattering in La(1.85)Sr(0.15)CuO(4) and YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x).
We investigate the magnetic instabilities of the two-dimensional model of interacting e_g electrons for hole doping away from two electrons per site in the mean-field approximation. In particular, we address the occurrence of orbitally polarized states due to the inequivalent orbitals, and their interplay with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin order. The role played by the Hund's exchange coupling J_H and by the crystal field orbital splitting E_z in stabilizing one of the competing phases is discussed in detail.
The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a pyrochlore lattice under external magnetic field is studied by classical Monte Carlo simulation. The model includes bilinear and biquadratic interactions; the latter effectively describes the coupling to lattice distortions. The magnetization process shows a half-magnetization plateau at low temperatures, accompanied with strong suppression of the magnetic susceptibility. Temperature dependence of the plateau behavior is clarified. Finite-temperature phase diagram under the magnetic field is determined. The results are compared with recent experiment…
The spin-charge-orbital complex structures of manganites are studied using topological concepts. The key quantity is the "winding number" w associated with the Berry-phase connection of an e_g electron parallel-transported through Jahn-Teller centers, along zigzag one-dimensional paths in an antiferromagnetic environment of t_{2g} spins. From these concepts, it is shown that the "bi-stripe" and "Wigner-crystal" states observed experimentally have different w's. Predictions for the spin structure of the charge-ordered states for heavily doped manganites are discussed.
High-transition temperature (high-$T_c$) superconductivity in the iron pnictides/chalcogenides emerges from the suppression of the static antiferromagnetic order in their parent compounds, similar to copper oxides superconductors. This raises a fundamental question concerning the role of magnetism in the superconductivity of these materials. Neutron scattering, a powerful probe to study the magnetic order and spin dynamics, plays an essential role in determining the relationship between magnetism and superconductivity in high-$T_c$ superconductors. The rapid development of modern neutron time-…
The concept of spin-orbital entanglement on superexchange bonds in transition metal oxides is introduced and explained on several examples. It is shown that spin-orbital entanglement in superexchange models destabilizes the long-range (spin and orbital) order and may lead either to a disordered spin-liquid state or to novel phases at low temperature which arise from strongly frustrated interactions. Such novel ground states cannot be described within the conventionally used mean field theory which separates spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Even in cases where the ground states are disentan…
Superconductivity in layered copper-oxide compounds emerges when charge carriers are added to antiferromagnetically-ordered CuO2 layers. The carriers destroy the antiferromagnetic order, but strong spin fluctuations persist throughout the superconducting phase and are intimately linked to super-conductivity. Neutron scattering measurements of spin fluctuations in hole-doped copper oxides have revealed an unusual `hour-glass' feature in the momentum-resolved magnetic spectrum, present in a wide range of superconducting and non-superconducting materials. There is no widely-accepted explanation f…
