We study theoretically the electronic states in a $5d$ transition metal oxide Na$_2$IrO$_3$, in which both the spin-orbit interaction and the electron correlation play crucial roles. Tight-binding model analysis together with the fisrt-principles band structure calculation predicts that this material is a layered quantum spin Hall system. Due to the electron correlation, an antiferromagnetic order first develops at the edge, and later inside the bulk at low temperatures.
We show that the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) at a magnetic interface with strong spin-orbit coupling can be tuned with an external electric field. By altering the strength of the inversion symmetry breaking, the electric field changes the Rashba interaction, which in turn modifies the magnitude of the Berry curvature, the central quantity in determining the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC). The effect is illustrated with a square lattice model, which yields a quadratic dependence of the AHC for small electric fields. Explicit density-functional calculations were performed for the recently gro…
Scalar spin chirality is expected to induce a finite contribution to the Hall response at low temperatures. We study this spin-chirality-driven Hall effect, known as the topological Hall effect, at the manganite side of the interface between La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ and SrIrO$_3$. The ferromagnetic double-exchange hopping at the manganite layer, in conjunction with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction which arises at the interface due to broken inversion symmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling from the iridate layer, could produce a skyrmion-crystal (SkX) phase in the presence of an e…
Appropriately designed transition metal oxide heterostructures involving small band gap Mott insulators are argued to support spatially separated electron and hole gasses at equilibrium. Spatial separations and carrier densities favoring the formation of excitonic states are achievable. The excitonic states may exhibit potentially novel properties. Energetic estimates are given, candidate material systems are discussed, and the possibility of large photvoltaic effects is mentioned
We present an extension of Cluster Perturbation Theory to include many body correlations associated to local e-e repulsion in real materials. We show that this approach can describe the physics of complex correlated materials where different atomic species and different orbitals coexist. The prototypical case of MnO is considered.
Spontaneous symmetry breakings, metal-insulator transitions, and transport properties of magnetic-domain-wall states in pyrochlore iridium oxides are studied by employing a symmetry adapted effective hamiltonian with a slab perpendicular to the (111) direction of the pyrochlore lattice. Emergent metallic domain wall, which has unconventional topological nature with a controllable and mobile metallic layer, is shown to host Fermi surfaces with modulated helical spin textures resembling Rashba metals. The helical nature of the domain-wall Fermi surfaces is experimentally detectable by anomalous …
We study topological phases in Iridium (Ir) oxide superlattices of orthorhombic perovskite-type grown along the [001] crystallographic axis. Due to strong spin-orbit coupling of Ir 5d-orbitals and electronic correlation effects, Ir oxide bilayer superlattices display topological magnetic insulators exhibiting quantized anomalous Hall effects. Depending on stacking of two layers, we also found a valley Hall insulator with counter-propagating edge currents from two different valleys and a topological crystalline insulator with edge states protected by the crystal lattice symmetry. In a single la…
The effects of a spin-orbit interaction on transition-metal ions of (4d)^3- and (5d)^3 -based oxides in which three electrons occupy t_{2g} orbitals are studied. The amplitude of the magnetic moment of d electrons on the 5d and 4d orbitals is estimated by numerical diagonalization. It is found that the magnetic moment is reduced by the spin-orbit interaction. It is suggested that (4d)^3- and (5d)^3 -based oxides are located in the middle of the L-S and J-J coupling schemes.
The class of transition metal compounds shows an enormous richness of physical properties, such as metal-insulator transitions, colossal magneto-resistance, super-conductivity, magneto-optics and spin-depend transport. It now becomes more and more clear that in order to describe transition metal compounds the charge, orbital, spin and lattice degrees of freedom should all be taken into account. With the recognition that the local orbital occupation plays an important role in many of the transition metal compounds there is a need for experimental techniques that can measure the orbital occupati…
Very accurate wave functions are calculated for small transition metal oxide molecules. These wave functions are decomposed using reduced density matrices to study the underlying correlation of electrons. The correlation is primarily of left-right type between the transition metals and the oxygen atoms, which is mediated by excitations from the nominal single Slater ground state into antibonding and d-type orbitals. In a localized representation, this correlation manifests itself in a 2-electron hopping term that is off-diagonal. This term is of similar magnitude to the commonly considered Hub…
A new pyrochlore ruthenium oxide, Hg2Ru2O7 was synthesized under a high pressure of 6 GPa. In contrast to the extensively studied Ru4+ oxides, this compound possesses a novel Ru5+ valence state, corresponding to a half-filled t_2g_3 electron configuration. Hg2Ru2O7 exhibits a first order metal-insulator transition at 107 K, accompanied by a structural transition from cubic to lower symmetry. The behavior of the magnetic susceptibility suggests the possible formation of a spin singlet in the insulating low temperature state.
Understanding complex correlated oxides and their phase transitions has long been a challenge. The difficulty largely arises from the intriguing interplay between multiple degrees of freedoms. While degeneracy can play an important role in determining material characteristics, there is no well-defined way to quantify and to unveil its role in real materials having complicated band structures. Here we suggest a way to quantify the `effective degeneracy' relevant to metal-insulator transition by introducing entropy-like terms. This new quantity well describes the electronic behaviors of transiti…
We fabricated silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors where an additional sodium-doped layer was incorporated into the oxide to create potential fluctuations at the Si-SiO2 interface. The amplitude of these fluctuations is controlled by both the density of ions in the oxide and their position relative to the Si-SiO2 interface. Owing to the high mobility of the ions at room temperature, it is possible to move them with the application of a suitable electric field. We show that, in this configuration, such a device can be used to control both the disorder and the electron-elec…
We investigated the electronic structures of the perovskite-type 4$d$ transition metal oxides Sr$M$O$_3$ ($M$ = Zr, Mo, Ru, and Rh) using their optical conductivity spectra $σ(ω)$. The interband transitions in $σ(ω)$ are assigned, and some important physical parameters, such as on-site Coulomb repulsion energy $U$, charge transfer energy $Δ_{pd}$, and crystal field splitting $10Dq$, are estimated. It is observed that $Δ_{pd}$ and 10$Dq$ decrease systematically with the increase in the atomic number of the 4$d$ transition metal. Compared to the case of 3$d$ transition metal oxides, the magnitud…
A combination of dynamical mean field theory and density functional theory, as implemented in Phys. Rev. B 81, 195107 (2010), is applied to both the early and late transition metal oxides. For fixed value of the local Coulomb repulsion, without fine tuning, we obtain the main features of these series, such as the metallic character of SrVO$_3$ and the the insulating gaps of LaVO$_3$, LaTiO$_3$ and La$_2$CO$_4$ which are in good agreement with experiment. The study highlights the importance of local physics and high energy hybridization in the screening of the Hubbard interaction and how differ…
The doping induced insulator-metal transition in $La_{1-x}Sr_{x}TiO_{3}$ is studied using the ab-initio LDA+DMFT method. Combining the LDA bandstructure for the actual, distorted structure found recently with multi-orbital DMFT to treat electronic correlations, we find: $(i)$ ferro-orbital order in the Mott insulating state without orbital degeneracy, $(ii)$ a continuous filling induced transition to the paramagnetic metal (PM) with $x$, and $(iii)$ excellent quantitative agreement with published photoemission data for the case of 6% doping. Our results imply that this system can be described …
We summarize some characteristic features of the frustrated magnetic interactions in spin-orbital models adequate for cubic transition metal oxides with orbital degeneracy. A generic tendency towards dimerization, found already in the degenerate Hubbard model, is confirmed for $t_{2g}$ but not for $e_g$ systems. In the $t_{2g}$ case the quantum orbital fluctuations are more pronounced and contribute to a stronger competition between different magnetic and orbital states. Therefore the orbital liquid states exist in some undoped $t_{2g}$ systems, while in the manganites such states can be trigg…
We report measurements and analyses of resistivity, thermopower and Hall coefficient of single-crystalline samples of the layered Rh oxide K_0.49RhO_2. The resistivity is proportional to the square of temperature up to 300 K, and the thermopower is proportional to temperature up to 140 K. The Hall coefficient increases linearly with temperature above 100 K, which is ascribed to the triangular network of Rh in this compound. The different transport properties between Na_xCoO_2 and K_0.49RhO_2 are discussed on the basis of the different band width between Co and Rh evaluated from the magnetotran…
Combining infrared reflectivity, transport, susceptibility and several diffraction techniques, we find compelling evidence that CaCrO3 is a rare case of a metallic and antiferromagnetic transition-metal oxide with a three-dimensional electronic structure. LSDA calculations correctly describe the metallic behavior as well as the anisotropic magnetic ordering pattern of C type: The high Cr valence state induces via sizeable pd hybridization remarkably strong next-nearest neighbor interactions stabilizing this ordering. The subtle balance of magnetic interactions gives rise to magneto-elastic cou…
We investigate the electronic structure of 4d transition metal oxides, CaRuO3 and SrRuO3. The analysis of the photoemission spectra reveals significantly weak electron correlation strength (U/W ~ 0.2) as expected in 4d systems and resolves the long standing issue that arose due to the prediction of large U/W similar to 3d-systems. It is shown that the bulk spectra, thermodynamic parameters and optical properties in these systems can consistently be described using first principle approaches. The observation of different surface and bulk electronic structures in these weakly correlated 4d syste…
Using a combination of local density functional theory and cluster exact diagonalization based dynamical mean field theory, we calculate many body electronic structures of several Mott insulating oxides including undoped high T_{c} materials. The dispersions of the lowest occupied electronic states are associated with the Zhang-Rice singlets in cuprates and with doublets, triplets, quadruplets and quintets in more general cases. Our results agree with angle resolved photoemission experiments including the decrease of the spectral weight of the Zhang--Rice band as it approaches k=0.
The study of strong electron correlations in transition metal oxides with modern microscopy and diffraction techniques unveiled a fascinating world of nanosize textures in the spin, charge, and crystal structure. Examples range from high $T_c$ superconducting cuprates and nickelates, to hole doped manganites and cobaltites. However, in many cases the appearance of these textures is accompanied with "glassiness" and multiscale/multiphase effects, which complicate significantly their experimental verification. Here, we demonstrate how nuclear magnetic resonance may be uniquely used to probe nano…
A promising route to tailoring the electronic properties of quantum materials and devices rests on the idea of orbital engineering in multilayered oxide heterostructures. Here we show that the interplay of interlayer charge imbalance and ligand distortions provides a knob for tuning the sequence of electronic levels even in intrinsically stacked oxides. We resolve in this regard the $d$-level structure of layered Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ by electron spin resonance. While canonical ligand-field theory predicts $g_{\parallel}$-factors $\!<\!2$ for positive tetragonal distortions as present in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$…
Topological crystalline insulators (TCI) possess electronic states protected by crystal symmetries, rather than time-reversal symmetry. We show that the transition metal oxides with heavy transition metals are able to support nontrivial band topology resulting from mirror symmetry of the lattice. As an example, we consider pyrochlore oxides of the form A$_2$M$_2$O$_7$. As a function of spin-orbit coupling strength, we find two $Z_2$ topological insulator phases can be distinguished from each other by their mirror Chern numbers, each of which indicates a different TCI. We also derive an effecti…
Topological band insulators which are dynamically generated by electron-electron interactions have been the- oretically proposed in two and three dimensional lattice models. We present evidence that the two-dimensional version can be stabilized in digital (111) heterostructures of transition-metal oxides as a result of purely local interactions. The topological phases are accompanied by spontaneous ordering of complex orbitals and we discuss their stability with respect to the Hund's rule coupling, Jahn-Teller interaction and inversion symmetry breaking terms. As main competitors we identify s…
Using a combination of density functional theory, tight-binding models, and Hartree-Fock theory, we predict topological phases with and without time-reversal symmetry breaking in oxide heterostructures. We consider both heterostructures containing light transition metal ions, and those containing heavy transition metal ions. We find the (111) growth direction naturally leads to favorable conditions for topological phases in both perovskite structures and pyrochlore structures. For the case of light transition metal elements, Hartree-Fock theory predicts the spin-orbit coupling is effectively e…
We investigated the electronic structures of the 5$d$ Ruddlesden-Popper series Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ ($n$=1, 2, and $\infty$) using optical spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. As 5$d$ orbitals are spatially more extended than 3$d$ or 4$d$ orbitals, it has been widely accepted that correlation effects are minimal in 5$d$ compounds. However, we observed a bandwidth-controlled transition from a Mott insulator to a metal as we increased $n$. In addition, the artificially synthesized perovskite SrIrO$_{3}$ showed a very large mass enhancement of about 6, indicating that it was in…
We argue that the 3A2 state considered by Oles in Phys. Stat. Sol. (b) 236 (2003) 281 for the d2 system occurring in the V3+ ion in V2O3 and LaVO3 as well as in Ti2+ ion in TiO and in many other oxides is wrong. The proper ground state is 3T1g - its 9-fold degeneracy is further split in a crystal by intra-atomic spin-orbit interactions and lattice distortions.
We investigate the correlation-induced Mott, magnetic, and topological phase transitions in artificial (111) bilayers of perovskite transition-metal oxides LaAuO$_3$ and SrIrO$_3$ for which the previous density-functional theory calculations predicted topological insulating states. Using the dynamical-mean-field theory with realistic band structures and Coulomb interactions, LaAuO$_3$ bilayer is shown to be far away from a Mott insulating regime, and a topological-insulating state is robust. On the other hand, SrIrO$_3$ bilayer is on the verge of an orbital-selective topological Mott transitio…
Topological insulators are characterized by a nontrivial band topology driven by the spin-orbit coupling. To fully explore the fundamental science and application of topological insulators, material realization is indispensable. Here we predict, based on tight-binding modeling and first-principles calculations, that bilayers of perovskite-type transition-metal oxides grown along the [111] crystallographic axis are potential candidates for two-dimensional topological insulators. The topological band structure of these materials can be fine-tuned by changing dopant ions, substrates, and external…
One of the key technologies in spintronics is to tame spin-orbit coupling (SOC) that links spin and motion of electrons, giving rise to intriguing magneto-transport properties in itinerant magnets. Prominent examples of such SOC-based phenomena are anomalous and topological Hall effects. However, controlling them by electric field has remained unachieved since electric field tends to be screened in itinerant magnets. Here we demonstrate that both anomalous and topological Hall effects can be modulated by electric field in oxide heterostructures consisting of ferromagnetic SrRuO$_{3}$ and nonma…
We present the synthesis and structural characterisation of a transition metal oxide hydride, LaSrCoO_3H_{0.7}, which adopts an unprecedented structure in which oxide chains are bridged by hydride anions to form a two- dimensional extended network. The metal centers are strongly coupled by their bonding with both oxide and hydride ligands to produce magnetic ordering up to at least 350 K. The synthetic route is sufficiently general to allow the prediction of a new class of transition metal-containing electronic and magnetic materials.
The role of orbital ordering on metal-insulator transition of transition-metal oxides is investigated by the cluster self-consistent field approach in the strong correlation regime. A clear dependence of the insulating gap on the orbital order parameter is found in the single-particle excitation spectra. The thermal fluctuation drives the orbital order-disorder transition, diminishes the gap and leads to the metal-insulator transition. The interplay between spins and orbits results in unusual temperature dependence of the orbital polarization in the orbital insulator, which can be seen in the …
The performance of two modern density-functionals, HSE06 and TB-mBJ, on predicting electronic structures of metal oxides, chalcogenides and nitrides, is studied in terms of band gaps, band structure and projected density-of-states. Contrary to GGA, hybrid functionals and GGA+U, both new functionals are able to predict band gaps with an appreciable accuracy of 25% and thus allow the screening of various classes of (mixed) metal oxides at modest computational cost. The calculated electronic structures are largely unaffected by the choice of basis functions and software implementation.
Four anti-perovskite-type compounds, ZnNNi3, ZnCNi3, SnNCo3, and SnCCo3, are synthesised through reactions between ingredient metal oxides and organic compound melamine (C3H6N6). ZnNNi3 and ZnCNi3 are selectively synthesised by choosing different reaction temperatures and nominal oxide-to-melamine ratios. SnNCo3 is synthesised for the first time by this melamine method. Resistivity, magnetisation, and heat capacity measurements reveal that SnNCo3 is a correlated metal with a high density of states at the Fermi level. Our results demonstrate that this feasible synthetic route using melamine is …
The interplay of non-local Coulomb repulsion and Hund's coupling in the d-orbital manifold in frustrated triangular lattices is analyzed by a mutliband extended Hubbard model. We find a rich phase diagram with several competing phases, including a robust pinball liquid phase, which is an unconventional metal characterized by threefold charge order, bad metallic behavior and the emergence of high spin local moments. Our results naturally explain the anomalous charge-ordered metallic state observed in the triangular layered compound AgNiO2. The potential relevance to other triangular transition …
This a review article, which presents a general framework for the analysis of interatomic magnetic interactions in the spin-density-functional theory, which is based on the magnetic force theorem, make a link with the models for transition-metal oxides, and gives several examples of how this strategy can be used for the analysis of magnetic properties of colossal-magnetoresistive perovskite manganites, double perovskite and pyrochlore compounds.
Exotic features of a metal/oxide/metal (MOM) sandwich, which will be the basis for a drastically innovative nonvolatile memory device, is brought to light from a physical point of view. Here the insulator is one of the ubiquitous and classic binary-transition-metal oxides (TMO), such as Fe2O3, NiO, and CoO. The sandwich exhibits a resistance that reversibly switches between two states: one is a highly resistive off-state and the other is a conductive on-state. Several distinct features were universally observed in these binary TMO sandwiches: namely, nonpolar switching, non-volatile threshold …
Previous work on the physical content of exchange correlation functionals that depend on both charge and spin densities is extended to elemental transition metals and a wider range of perovskite transition metal oxides. A comparison of spectra and magnetic moments calculated using exchange correlation functionals depending on charge density only or on both charge and spin densities, as well as the $+U$ and $+J$ extensions of these methods confirms previous conclusions that the spin-dependent part of the exchange correlation functional provides an effective Hund's interaction acting on the tran…
X-ray resonant scattering at the K-edge of transition metal oxides is shown to measure the orbital order parameter, supposed to accompany magnetic ordering in some cases. Virtual transitions to the 3d-orbitals are quadrupolar in general. In cases with no inversion symmetry, such as V$_2$O$_3$, treated in detail here, a dipole component enhances the resonance. Hence, we argue that the detailed structure of orbital order in V$_2$O$_3$ is experimentally accessible.
We investigate the frustrated magnetic interactions in cubic transition metal oxides with orbital degeneracy. The $e_g$ orbitals order easier and their ordering explains the $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase in KCuF$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$. In $t_{2g}$ systems the magnetic order changes at a transition from an orbital liquid to orbital ordered states. The fluctuations of $t_{2g}$ orbitals play a prominent role in LaVO$_3$ and YVO$_3$, where they compete with the Jahn-Teller effect and trigger the C-type antiferromagnetic order.
Multiterminal measurements have typically been employed to examine electronic properties of strongly correlated electronic materials such as transition metal oxides without the influence of contact effects. In contrast, in this work we investigate the interface properties of Fe$_3$O$_4$ with different metals, with the contact effects providing a window on the physics at work in the correlated oxide. Contact resistances are determined by means of four-terminal electrical measurements as a function of source voltage and temperature. Contact resistances vary systematically with the work function …
Correlated electrons in transition metal oxides (TMOs) exhibit a variety of emergent phases. When TMOs are confined to a single-atomic-layer thickness, experiments so far have shown that they usually lose diverse properties and become insulators. In an attempt to extend the range of electronic phases of the single-atomic-layer oxide, we search for a metallic phase in a monolayer-thick epitaxial SrRuO$_3$ film. Combining atomic-scale epitaxy and angle-resolved photoemission measurements, we show that the monolayer SrRuO$_3$ is a strongly correlated metal. Systematic investigation reveals that t…
We demonstrate that the charge distributions in Hubbard-model representations of transition metal oxide heterojucntions can be described by a Thomas-Fermi theory in which the energy is approximated as the sum of the electrostatic energy and the uniform three-dimensional Hubbard model energy per site at the local density equals to a constant. When charged atomic layers in the oxides are approximated as two-dimensional sheets with uniform charge density, the electrostatic energy is simply evaluated. We find that this Thomas-Fermi theory can reproduce results obtained from full Hartree-Fock theor…
Magnetism and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) are two quintessential ingredients underlying novel topological transport phenomena in itinerant ferromagnets. When spin-polarized bands support nodal points/lines with band degeneracy that can be lifted by SOC, the nodal structures become a source of Berry curvature; this leads to a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Contrary to three-dimensional systems that naturally host nodal points/lines, two-dimensional (2D) systems can possess stable nodal structures only when proper crystalline symmetry exists. Here we show that 2D spin-polarized band structures…
A systematic microscopic theory of magnetically induced ferroelectricity and lattice modulation is presented for all electron configurations of Mott-insulating transition-metal oxides. Various mechanisms of polarization are identified in terms of a strong-coupling perturbation theory. Especially, the spin-orbit interaction acting on the ligand p orbitals is shown to give the ferroelectric polarization of the spin-current form, which plays a crucial role particularly in eg systems. Semiquantitative agreements with the multiferroic TbMnO3 are obtained. Predictions for X-ray and neutron scatterin…
The novel 4d perovskite compound SrRhO3 was investigated by isovalent doping studies. The solubility limits of Ca and Ba onto Sr-site were below 80% and 20%, respectively. Although SrRhO3 was chemically compressed, approximately 5.7% by the Ca doping, no significant influence was observed on the magnetic and electrical properties.
The thermal radiative near field transport between vanadium dioxide and silicon oxide at submicron distances is expected to exhibit a strong dependence on the state of vanadium dioxide which undergoes a metal-insulator transition near room temperature. We report the measurement of near field thermal transport between a heated silicon oxide micro-sphere and a vanadium dioxide thin film on a titanium oxide (rutile) substrate. The temperatures of the 15 nm vanadium dioxide thin film varied to be below and above the metal-insulator-transition, the sphere temperatures were varied in a range between…
Electronic structure of strongly correlated transition metal oxides (TMOs) is a complex phenomenon due to competing interaction among the charge, spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom. Often individual compounds are examined to explain certain properties associated with these compounds or in rare cases few members of a family are investigated to define a particular trend exhibited by that family. Here, with the objective of generalization, we have investigated the electronic structure of three families of compounds, namely, highly symmetric cubic mono-oxides, symmetry-lowered spinels an…
Fabricating complex transition metal oxides with a tuneable band gap without compromising their intriguing physical properties is a longstanding challenge. Here we examine the layered ferroelectric bismuth titanate and demonstrate that, by site-specific substitution with the Mott insulator lanthanum cobaltite, its band gap can be narrowed as much as one electron volt, while remaining strongly ferroelectric. We find that when a specific site in the host material is preferentially substituted, a split-off state responsible for the band gap reduction is created just below the conduction band of b…
Oxides with perovskite-based structures have been known as essential materials for fascinating phenomena such as high-temperature and unconventional superconductivity. Discoveries of these oxide superconductors have driven the science community to vastly extend the concepts of strongly correlated electron systems. The base of these materials, the cubic perovskite oxides, $AB$O$_3$, also exhibit superconductivity with $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of up to 30 K, as reported for Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$BiO$_3$. Perovskite oxides have their counterparts, antiperovskite oxides $A_3B$O (or "$B$O$A_3$"), in which the…
