Combining infrared reflectivity, transport, susceptibility and several diffraction techniques, we find compelling evidence that CaCrO3 is a rare case of a metallic and antiferromagnetic transition-metal oxide with a three-dimensional electronic structure. LSDA calculations correctly describe the metallic behavior as well as the anisotropic magnetic ordering pattern of C type: The high Cr valence state induces via sizeable pd hybridization remarkably strong next-nearest neighbor interactions stabilizing this ordering. The subtle balance of magnetic interactions gives rise to magneto-elastic coupling, explaining pronounced structural anomalies observed at the magnetic ordering transition.
We study the lattice dynamics of antiferromagnetic transition-metal oxides by using self-consistent Hubbard functionals. We calculate the ground states of the oxides with the on-site and intersite Hubbard interactions determined self-consistently within the framework of density functional theory. The on-site and intersite Hubbard terms fix the errors associated with the electron self-interaction in the local and semilocal functionals. Inclusion of the intersite Hubbard terms in addition to the on-site Hubbard terms produces accurate phonon dispersion of the transition-metal oxides. Calculated …
The mean-field phase diagram of antiferromagnetic order in t-J model has been examined, using the free energy obtained by Ginzburg-Landau (GL) expansion. We extended the usual GL theory in two ways: First, we have included higher order terms with respect to the spatial derivative (or wave number) to incorporate the incommensurate antiferromagnetic order. Second, we have also included higher order terms with respect to the order parameter amplitude, in order to treat the first order phase transition between paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phase, which appears at some doping rates. We found t…
Within the fermion-spin theory, the physical properties of the electron pairing state in the copper oxide materials are discussed. According to the common form of the electron Cooper pair, it is shown that there is a coexistence of the electron Cooper pair and magnetic short-range correlation, and hence the antiferromagnetic short-range correlation can persist into the superconducting state. Moreover, the mean-field results indicate that the electron pairing state originating from the pure magnetic interaction in the two-dimensional t-J model is the local state, and then does not reveal the tr…
An electron-phonon interaction arising from the modulation of the superexchange interaction by phonons is studied within the theoretical framework of Kondo lattices. It is relevant in strongly correlated electron liquids in cuprate oxide superconductors, which lie in the vicinity of the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition. It is enhanced by antiferromagnetic and superconducting fluctuations, which are developed mainly because of the superexchange interaction. When the enhancement of the electron-phonon interaction is large enough, it can explain the softening of phonons and kinks in the qu…
We propose mechanism for pressure-induced transitions between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases that relies on a competition between characteristic energy scales ubiquitous among $d$-electron metallic magnetic compounds. Principles behind the mechanism are demonstrated on the example of the minimal two-orbital $p$-$d$ lattice model. We suggest that LaCrGe$_3$, where pressure-induced ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic phase transition has been recently observed, is a promising candidate to realize discussed mechanism.
We report a study of the magnetoresistance (MR) of the metallic perovskite oxide LaNiO$_{3-δ}$ as a function of the oxygen stoichiometry $δ$ ($δ\leq$ 0.14), magnetic field (H $\leq 6T$) and temperature (1.5K $\leq $ T $\leq $ 25K). We find a strong dependence of the nature of MR on the oxygen stoichiometry. The MR at low temperatures change from positive to negative as the sample becomes more oxygen deficient (i.e, $δ$ increases). Some of the samples which are more resistive, show a resistivity minima at $T_{min}$ $\approx$ 20K. We find that in these samples the MR is positive at T > $T_{min}$…
Using elastic neutron scattering, we evidence a commensurate antiferromagnetic Cu(2) order (AF) in the superconducting (SC) high-$\rm T_c$ cuprate $\rm YBa_2(Cu_{1-y}Co_y)_3O_{7+δ}$ (y=0.013, $\rm T_c$=93 K). As in the Co-free system, the spin excitation spectrum is dominated by a magnetic resonance peak at 41 meV but with a reduced spectral weight. The substitution of Co thus leads to a state where AF and SC cohabit showing that the CuO$_2$ plane is a highly antiferromagnetically polarizable medium even for a sample where T$_c$ remains optimum.
The material class of rare earth nickelates with high Ni$^{3+}$ oxidation state is generating continued interest due to the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition with charge order and the appearance of non-collinear magnetic phases within this insulating regime. The recent theoretical prediction for superconductivity in LaNiO$_3$ thin films has also triggered intensive research efforts. LaNiO$_3$ seems to be the only rare earth nickelate that stays metallic and paramagnetic down to lowest temperatures. So far, centimetre-sized impurity-free single crystal growth has not been reported for …
Within the framework of the QED3 theory of cuprates it is argued that bulk antiferromagnetic (AF) order can coexist with d-wave superconductivity in the underdoped region, in agreement with recent experiments. The AF order arises from the phase fluctuating d-wave superconductor via the mechanism of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, provided that fluctuations are sufficiently strong. The phase diagram for this coexistence is mapped out by means of analytical and numerical solutions of the underlying Dyson-Schwinger equation in the large N limit.
The application of weak electric fields (<~ 100 V/cm) is found to dramatically enhance the lattice thermal conductivity of the antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator CaMnO(3) over a broad range of temperature about the Neel ordering point (125 K). The effect is coincident with field-induced de-trapping of bound electrons, suggesting that phonon scattering associated with short- and long-ranged AF order is suppressed in the presence of the mobilized charge. This interplay between bound charge and spin-phonon coupling might allow for the reversible control of spin fluctuations using weak external fiel…
Low-temperature transport and magnetization measurements for the antiferromagnets SrMnO(3) and CaMnO(3) identify an impurity band of mobile states separated by energy E from electrons bound in Coulombic potentials. Very weak electric fields are sufficient to excite bound electrons to the impurity band, increasing the mobile carrier concentration by more than three orders of magnitude. The data argue against the formation of self-trapped magnetic polarons (MPs) predicted by theory, and rather imply that bound MPs become stable only for kT<<E.
A direct correlation is seen between the coercive field (HC) and the magnetic-field-dependent resistivity (MR) in SrMnO3/SrRuO3 superlattices of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The magnetoresistance shows a sharp jump at Hc for in-plane current and the out-of-plane magnetic field. Both HC and high-field MR also oscillate with the thickness of the SrMnO3 spacer layers separating the metallic ruthenate. Since the spacer in these superlattices has no mobile carriers to facilitate an oscillatory coupling, we attribute the observed behavior to the spin-polarized quantum tunneling of electrons be…
Properties of iron oxides at the extreme conditions are of essential importance in condensed matter physics and Geophysics. The recent discovery of a new type of iron oxide, Fe4O5, at high pressure and high temperature of Earth's deep interior attracts great interests. In this paper, we report the electronic structure and the magnetic properties of Fe4O5 predicted by the density functional theory plus dynamic mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) approach. We find that Fe4O5 stays metallic from ambient pressure to high pressure. The magnetic moments of iron atoms at the three different crystallographic…
The spin dynamic of the metallic A-type antiferromagnetic manganites is studied. An effective nearest-neighbour Heisenberg spin wave dispersion is derived from the double exchange model taking into account the superexchange interaction between the core spins. The result of inelastic neutron scattering experiment on ${Nd}_{0.45}{Sr}_{0.55}{Mn} {O}_{3}$ is qualitatively reproduced. Comparing theory with experimental data two main parameters of the model: nearest-neighbour electron transfer amplitude and superexchange coupling between the core spins are estimated.
Resonant x-ray diffraction experiments were performed for the metallic iridium oxide IrO$_{2}$. We observed anisotropic tensor of susceptibility (ATS) scattering, the spectrum of which shows a sharp contrast between the $L_{3}$ and $L_{2}$ edges. At the $L_{3}$ edge, resonance excitations were clearly observed from the core 2$p$ orbitals to both the 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ and $e_{g}$ orbitals. In contrast, the resonance mode associated with 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ orbitals was indiscernible at the $L_{2}$ edge. This contrasting behavior indicates that Ir 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ orbitals are fairly close to the $J_{\rm eff…
Non-quasiparticle (incoherent) states which play an important role in the electronic structure of half-metallic ferromagnets (HMF) are investigated consistently in the case of antiferromagnetic $s-d(f)$ exchange interaction. Their appropriate description in the limit of strong correlations requires a rearrangement of perturbation series in comparison with the usual Dyson equation. This consideration provides a solution of the Kondo problem in the HMF case and can be important for first-principle HMF calculations performed earlier for ferromagnetic $s-d(f)$ interaction.
The transport properties of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model in one dimension are studied via bosonization methods. The antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which normally appear because of the RKKY interactions, are explicitly taken into account as a direct exchange between the ``core'' spins. It is shown that in the paramagnetic regime with the local antiferromagnetic fluctuations, the resistivity decays exponentially as the temperature increases while in the ferromagnetic regime the system is an almost perfect conductor. %A non-perturbative description of localized spin polarons %in the par…
Spin correlations in metallic and insulating phases of $V_2O_3$ and its derivatives are investigated using magnetic neutron scattering. Metallic samples have incommensurate spin correlations varying little with hole doping. Paramagnetic insulating samples have spin correlations only among near neighbors. The transition from either of these phases into the low temperature insulating antiferromagnetic phase is accompanied by an abrupt change of dynamic magnetic short range order. Our results support the idea that the transition into the antiferromagnetic insulator is also an orbital ordering tra…
The magnetic response expected from a state characterized by rotating antiferromagnetism in a neutron-scattering experiment is calculated. We predict the occurrence of a peak at the frequency of the rotation of the rotating antiferromagnetic order parameter. The doping dependence of this frequency is very similar to that of the frequency of the magnetic resonance observed in the neutron-scattering experiments for the hole-doped high-$T_C$ cuprates. This leads us to propose the rotating antiferromagnetism as a possible mechanism for this magnetic resonance. We conclude that while the magnitude …
We investigated the electronic structures of the 5$d$ Ruddlesden-Popper series Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ ($n$=1, 2, and $\infty$) using optical spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. As 5$d$ orbitals are spatially more extended than 3$d$ or 4$d$ orbitals, it has been widely accepted that correlation effects are minimal in 5$d$ compounds. However, we observed a bandwidth-controlled transition from a Mott insulator to a metal as we increased $n$. In addition, the artificially synthesized perovskite SrIrO$_{3}$ showed a very large mass enhancement of about 6, indicating that it was in…
We report results of NMR experiments on the ruthenium oxide Hg2Ru2O7 with the pyrochlore structure, which exhibits a metal-insulator transition at TMI = 107 K. In the metallic phase above TMI, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 and the Knight shift at the Hg sites follow the Korringa relation, indicating the absence of substantial spatial spin correlation. At low temperatures in the insulating phase, 99,101Ru-NMR signals are observed at zero magnetic field, providing evidence for a commensurate antiferromagnetic order. The estimated ordered moment is about 1 muB per Ru, much smaller…
Spontaneous symmetry breakings, metal-insulator transitions, and transport properties of magnetic-domain-wall states in pyrochlore iridium oxides are studied by employing a symmetry adapted effective hamiltonian with a slab perpendicular to the (111) direction of the pyrochlore lattice. Emergent metallic domain wall, which has unconventional topological nature with a controllable and mobile metallic layer, is shown to host Fermi surfaces with modulated helical spin textures resembling Rashba metals. The helical nature of the domain-wall Fermi surfaces is experimentally detectable by anomalous …
We have investigated the structural and magnetic transitions in CsCoO$_2$ using calorimetric measurements, neutron powder diffraction (NPD), density functional theory (DFT) calculations and muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. CsCoO$_2$ exhibits three-dimensional long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at 424~K, resulting in antiferromagnetic alignment of chains of ferromagnetically ordered Co-Co spin dimers. Although there is no change in magnetic structure around a structural transition at $T^{*}=100$~K, the resulting bifurcation of corner-shared Co--O--Co bond angles causes a weakeni…
Magnetic correlations in all four phases of pure and doped vanadium sesquioxide V_2O_3 have been examined by magnetic thermal neutron scattering. While the antiferromagnetic insulator can be accounted for by a Heisenberg localized spin model, the long range order in the antiferromagnetic metal is an incommensurate spin-density-wave, resulting from a Fermi surface nesting instability. Spin dynamics in the strongly correlated metal are dominated by spin fluctuations in the Stoner electron-hole continuum. Furthermore, our results in metallic V_2O_3 represent an unprecedentedly complete characteri…
Transition metal oxides are well known for their complex magnetic and electrical properties. When brought together in heterostructure geometries, they show particular promise for spintronics and colossal magnetoresistance applications. In this letter, we propose a new mechanism for the coupling between layers of itinerant ferromagnetic materials in heterostructures. The coupling is mediated by charge carriers that strive to maximally delocalize through the heterostructure to gain kinetic energy. In doing so, they force a ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic coupling between the constituent layer…
Hydrostatic pressure effects on the temperature- and magnetic field dependencies of the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetization of the bi-layered perovskite Sr3Ru2O7 have been studied by SQUID magnetometer measurements under a hydrostatic helium-gas pressure. The anomalously enhanced low-temperature value of the paramagnetic susceptibility has been found to systematically decrease with increasing pressure. The effect is accompanied by an increase of the temperature Tmax of a pronounced peak of susceptibility. Thus, magnetization measurements under hydrostatic pressure reveal that the lattice c…
We identify a mechanism to convert skyrmions and antiskyrmions into their antiferromagnetic (AFM) counterparts via interfacial engineering. The key idea is to combine properties of an antiferromagnet and a spin-orbit (SO) coupled metal. Utilizing hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) simulations for a generic microscopic electronic Hamiltonian for the interfacial layers, we explicitly show the emergence of AFM skyrmions and AFM antiskyrmions. We further show that an effective spin Hamiltonian provides a simpler understanding of the results. We discuss the role of electronic itinerancy in determining the na…
We report a detailed investigation of magnetization, magnetocaloric effect and exchange bias studies on a mixed metal oxide YFe0.5Cr0.5O3 belonging to perovskite family. Our results reveal that the compound is in canted magnetic state (CMS) where ferromagnetic correlations are present in an antiferromagnetic state. Magnetic entropy change of this compound follows a power law (deltaS_M ~ H^m) dependence of magnetic field. In this compound, inverse magnetocaloric effect (IMCE) is observed below 260 K while conventional magnetocaloric effect (CMCE) above it. The exponent m is found to be independ…
Extensive Cu-NMR studies on multilayered high-Tc cuprates have deduced the following results;(1) Antiferromagnetic (AFM) moment M_{AFM} is decreased with doping, regardless of the number of CuO_2 layers n, and collapses around a carrier density N_h = 0.17. (2) The AFM ordering temperature is enhanced as the out-of-plane coupling J_{out} increases with increasing n. (3) The in-plane superexchange J_{in} is invariant with doping, but is even increased. (4) The dome shape of T_c from the underdoped to the overdoped regime with a maximum T_c at N_h = 0.22 does not depend on n, but its maximum valu…
Holes doped within the square CuO2 network specific to the cuprate superconducting materials have oxygen 2p character. We investigate the basic properties of such oxygen holes by wavefunction-based quantum chemical calculations on large embedded clusters. We find that a 2p hole induces ferromagnetic correlations among the nearest-neighbor Cu 3d spins. When moving through the antiferromagnetic background the hole must bring along this spin polarization cloud at nearby Cu sites, which gives rise to a substantial reduction of the effective hopping parameters. Such interactions can explain the rel…
We investigate the frustrated magnetic interactions in cubic transition metal oxides with orbital degeneracy. The $e_g$ orbitals order easier and their ordering explains the $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase in KCuF$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$. In $t_{2g}$ systems the magnetic order changes at a transition from an orbital liquid to orbital ordered states. The fluctuations of $t_{2g}$ orbitals play a prominent role in LaVO$_3$ and YVO$_3$, where they compete with the Jahn-Teller effect and trigger the C-type antiferromagnetic order.
The novel 4d perovskite compound SrRhO3 was investigated by isovalent doping studies. The solubility limits of Ca and Ba onto Sr-site were below 80% and 20%, respectively. Although SrRhO3 was chemically compressed, approximately 5.7% by the Ca doping, no significant influence was observed on the magnetic and electrical properties.
We report measurements on Ti$_4$MnBi$_2$, where a crystal structure involving linear chains of Mn ions suggests one-dimensional magnetic character. The electrical resistivity is metallic, consistent with the results of electronic structure calculations that find a robust Fermi surface albeit with moderate electronic correlations. Curie-Weiss fit to the magnetic susceptibility finds that the Mn moments are in the low-spin $S = 1/2$ configuration. Neutron diffraction measurements detect weak antiferromagnetic order within the Mn chains, with further evidence for the small staggered moment coming…
Two different kinds of metal transition oxides have been studied for their large thermopower values. The first one corresponds to the Tl-based misfit cobaltite which is a hole-doped metal. We demonstrate that the partial Bi-substitution for Tl in this phase induces an increase of the room temperature (RT) thermopower (TEP) value. Same result is obtained with the new Pb_{1/3}SrCoO_{3+delta} misfit corresponding to the Tl complete replacement by lead. Simultaneously, the T dependence of their resistivity exhibits a re-entrance below 70-90K where a large negative magnetoresistance is observed. Ma…
We study theoretically the electronic states in a $5d$ transition metal oxide Na$_2$IrO$_3$, in which both the spin-orbit interaction and the electron correlation play crucial roles. Tight-binding model analysis together with the fisrt-principles band structure calculation predicts that this material is a layered quantum spin Hall system. Due to the electron correlation, an antiferromagnetic order first develops at the edge, and later inside the bulk at low temperatures.
Within the t-J model, the c-axis charge dynamics of the copper oxide materials in the underdoped and optimally doped regimes is studied by considering the incoherent interlayer hopping. It is shown that the c-axis charge dynamics is mainly governed by the scattering from the in-plane fluctuation. In the optimally doped regime, the c-axis resistivity is a linear in temperatures, and shows the metallic-like behavior for all temperatures, while the c-axis resistivity in the underdoped regime is characterized by a crossover from the high temperature metallic-like behavior to the low temperature se…
A novel metallic and magnetic transition metal oxide Ag2NiO2 is studied by means of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure is characterized by alternating stacking of a Ni3+O2 layer and a (Ag2)+ layer, the former realizing a spin-1/2 triangular lattice with eg orbital degeneracy and the latter providing itinerant electrons. It is found that the NiO2 layer exhibits orbital ordering at Ts = 260 K and antiferromagnetic spin ordering at TN = 56 K. Moreover, a moderately large mass enhancement is found for the itinerant electrons, suggesting…
A new mechanism is proposed to explain the colossal magnetoresistance and related phenomena. Moving electrons accompanied by Jahn-Teller phonon and spin-wave clouds may form composite polarons in ferromagnetic narrow-band manganites. The ground-state and finite-temperature properties of such composite polarons are studied in the present paper. By using a variational method, it is shown that the energy of the system at zero temperature decreases with the formation of composite polaron; the energy spectrum and effective mass of the composite polaron at finite temperature is found to be strongly …
To compare the superconductivity in strongly correlated electron systems with the antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the copper oxides and with the ferromagnetic fluctuations in Sr_2RuO_4 a t-J-I model is proposed. The antiferromagnetic coupling J results in the superconducting state of d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry and the ferromagnetic coupling constant I results in the spin-triplet p-type state. The difference in the gap anisotropies provides the large difference in T_c values, for the typical values of the coupling constants: T_c of order of 1K for the ruthenate and T_c of order of 100K for the cupr…
We show that a static electric field induces the transition from a ferromagnetic metal to an antiferromagnetic insulator owing to the Bloch oscillation of conduction electrons. In the steady state, the electric current is inversely proportional to the applied electric field, implying the nonperturbative insulating nature that is different from the Wannier-Stark localization. Possible experimental realization based on recent terahertz pulse sources is discussed.
Correlated electrons in transition metal oxides (TMOs) exhibit a variety of emergent phases. When TMOs are confined to a single-atomic-layer thickness, experiments so far have shown that they usually lose diverse properties and become insulators. In an attempt to extend the range of electronic phases of the single-atomic-layer oxide, we search for a metallic phase in a monolayer-thick epitaxial SrRuO$_3$ film. Combining atomic-scale epitaxy and angle-resolved photoemission measurements, we show that the monolayer SrRuO$_3$ is a strongly correlated metal. Systematic investigation reveals that t…
The novel spin-chain cobalt oxide Sr5Pb3CoO12 [P-62m, a = 10.1093(2) A and c = 3.562 51(9) A at 295 K] is reported. Polycrystalline sample of the compound was studied by neutron diffraction (at 6 and 295 K) and magnetic susceptibility measurements (5 to 390 K). The cobalt oxide was found to be analogous to the copper oxide Sr5Pb3CoO12, which is comprised of magnetic-linear chains at inter-chain distance of 10 A. Although the cobalt oxide chains (mu_eff of 3.64 mu_B per Co) are substantially antiferromagnetic (theta_W = -38.8 K), neither low-dimensional magnetism nor long-range ordering has bee…
Charge and orbital ordering behaviors in the half doped bi-layered compound LaSr2Mn2O7 have been studied by resonant and non-resonant X-ray scattering. Three different order parameters, which correspond to the A-type antiferromagnetic, a charge and an orbital ordered states, were observed by measuring the magnetostriction and the superlattice peaks characterized by wavevectors (1/2 1/2 0) and (1/4 1/4 0), respectively. The superlattice reflections indicating the charge and orbital ordered states were observed below 210 K. Both the intensities reach a maximum at 160 K on cooling and become very…
Specific heat measurements were carried out on the closely related spin-chain oxides Ca3Co2O6 and Ca3CoRhO6. Both compounds consist of Ising magnetic chains that are arranged on a triangular lattice. The spin coupling along and between the chains are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively. Geometrical frustration is expected from the combination of these magnetic features. The present study reports that the specific heat data of these compounds exhibit similarities in the spin-freezing process at low T, whereas striking differences exist in the antiferromagnetic interchain ordering …
The sodium rhodate NaRh2O4 was synthesized for the first time and characterized by neutron and x-ray diffraction studies, measurements of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and the Seebeck coefficient. NaRh2O4 crystallizes in the CaFe2O4-type structure, which is comprised of a characteristic RhO6 octahedra network. The compound is metallic in nature, probably reflecting the 1 to 1 mixed valence character of Rh(III) and Rh(IV) in the network. For further studies of the compound, the Rh valence was varied significantly by means of an aliovalent substitution: the full…
We study theoretically the phase diagram of perovskite manganites taking into account the double degeneracy of the $e_g$ orbitals in a $Mn^{3+}$ ion. A rich phase diagram is obtained in the mean field theory at zero temperature as functions of $x$ (hole concentration) and $J_S$ (antiferromagnetic interaction between $t_{2g}$ spins). The global features of the phase diagram is understood in terms of the superexchange and double exchange interactions, which are strongly depends on types of the occupied $e_g$ orbitals. The strong electron correlation induces the orbital polarization, which contro…
The highly conductive layered metallic oxide \pdcoo{} is a near-perfect analogue to an alkali metal in two dimensions. It is distinguished from other two-dimensional electron systems where the Fermi surface does not reach the Brillouin zone boundary by a high planar electron density exceeding $10^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$. The simple single-band quasi-2D electronic structure results in strongly anisotropic transport properties and limits the effectiveness of electron-phonon scattering. Measurements on single crystals in the temperature range from 10-300K show that the thermal conductivity is much more w…
Tailoring transport properties of strongly correlated electron systems in a controlled fashion counts among the dreams of materials scientists. In copper oxides, varying the carrier concentration is a tool to obtain high-temperature superconducting phases. In manganites, doping results in exotic physics such as insulator-metal transitions (IMT), colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), orbital- or charge-ordered (CO) or charge-disproportionate (CD) states. In most oxides, antiferromagnetic order and charge-disproportionation are asssociated with insulating behavior. Here we report the realization of …
Magnetic interfaces and the phenomena arising from them drive both the design of modern spintronics and fundamental research. Recently, it was revealed that through designing magnetic frustration in configurationally complex entropy stabilized oxides, exchange bias can occur in structurally single crystal films. This eliminates the need for complex heterostructures and nanocomposites in the design and control of magnetic response phenomena. In this work, we demonstrate through hole doping of a high entropy perovskite oxide that tuning of magnetic responses can be achieved. With detailed magnet…
We find that isoelectronic disorder destroys the spectral gap in a Mott-Hubbard insulator in 2D leading, most unexpectedly, to a new metallic phase. This phase is spatially inhomogeneous with metallic behavior coexisting with antiferromagnetic long range order. Even though the Mott gap in the pure system is much larger than antiferromagnetic exchange, the spectral gap is destroyed locally in regions where the disorder potential is high enough to overcome the inter-electron repulsion thereby generating puddles where charge fluctuations are enhanced. With increasing disorder, these puddles expan…
We report the magnetic properties of Mg$_{0.2}$Co$_{0.2}$Ni$_{0.2}$Cu$_{0.2}$Zn$_{0.2}$O, a high-entropy oxide with rocksalt structure, and the influence of substitutions on these properties. From the magnetic susceptibility and neutron diffraction measurements, we found that this compound exhibits long-range magnetic order below 120 K despite the substantial structuraldisorder. The other rocksalt-type high-entropy oxides with various chemical substitutions were found to host either an antiferromagnetic order or spin-glass state depending on the amount of magnetic ions. The presence of magneti…
We investigate the magnetic instabilities of the two-dimensional model of interacting e_g electrons for hole doping away from two electrons per site in the mean-field approximation. In particular, we address the occurrence of orbitally polarized states due to the inequivalent orbitals, and their interplay with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin order. The role played by the Hund's exchange coupling J_H and by the crystal field orbital splitting E_z in stabilizing one of the competing phases is discussed in detail.
The magnetic order and the spin dynamics in the antiferromagnetic entropy-stabilized oxide (Mg$_{0.2}$Co$_{0.2}$Ni$_{0.2}$Cu$_{0.2}$Zn$_{0.2}$)O (MgO-ESO) have been studied using muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering. We find that antiferromagnetic order develops gradually in the sample volume as it is cooled below 140 K, becoming fully ordered around 100 K. The spin dynamics show a critical slowing down in the vicinity of the transition, and the magnetic order parameter grows continuously in the ordered state. These results indicate that the antiferromagnetic transitio…
MnBi2Te4 has attracted tremendous research interest recently as the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AF) topological insulator. It undergoes a long-range AF order at TN = 24 K accompanied with a cusp-like anomaly in the metallic resistivity. Here, we studied the effect of hydrostatic pressure on its electrical transport properties up to 12.5 GPa by using a cubic anvil cell apparatus. We find that TN determined from the resistivity anomaly first increases slightly with pressure and then decreases until vanished completely at ~7 GPa. Intriguingly, its resistivity rho(T) is enhanced gradually b…
