Given a convex body K in R^n and p in R, we introduce and study the extremal inner and outer affine surface areas
IS_p(K) = sup_{K'\subseteq K} (as_p(K') ) and os_p(K)=inf_{K'\supseteq K} (as_p(K') ), where as_p(K') denotes the L_p-affine surface area of K', and the supremum is taken over all convex subsets of K and the infimum over all convex compact subsets containing K.
The convex body that realizes IS_1(K) in dimension 2 was determined by Barany. He also showed that this body is the limit shape of lattice polytopes in K. In higher dimensions no results are known about the extremal bodies.
We use a thin shell estimate of Guedon and Milman and the Löwner ellipsoid to give asymptotic estimates on the size of IS_p(K) and os_p(K). Surprisingly, both quantities are proportional to a power of volume.

This paper is devoted to measures of symmetry based on distance between centroid and one of the centers of John and Lowner ellipsoid. The author proves the accuracy of the derived upper bounds for the considered measures of symmetry.
For a convex body $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, we introduce and study the extremal general affine surface areas, defined by \[ {\rm IS}_φ(K):=\sup_{K^\prime\subset K}{\rm as}_φ(K),\quad {\rm os}_ψ(K):=\inf_{K^\prime\supset K}{\rm as}_ψ(K) \] where ${\rm as}_φ(K)$ and ${\rm as}_ψ(K)$ are the $L_φ$ and $L_ψ$ affine surface area of $K$, respectively. We prove that there exist extremal convex bodies that achieve the supremum and infimum, and that the functionals ${\rm IS}_φ$ and ${\rm os}_ψ$ are continuous. In our main results, we prove Blaschke-Santaló type inequalities and inverse Santaló type inequal…
We present several sharp inequalities for the SL(n) invariant $Ω_{2,n}(K)$ introduced in our earlier work on centro-affine invariants for smooth convex bodies containing the origin. A connection arose with the Paouris-Werner invariant $Ω_K$ defined for convex bodies $K$ whose centroid is at the origin. We offer two alternative definitions for $Ω_K$ when $K \in C^2_+$. The technique employed prompts us to conjecture that any SL(n) invariant of convex bodies with continuous and positive centro-affine curvature function can be obtained as a limit of normalized $p$-affine surface areas of the conv…
Let $K$ be a convex body in $\mathbb R^n$. We introduce a new affine invariant, which we call $Ω_K$, that can be found in three different ways: as a limit of normalized $L_p$-affine surface areas, as the relative entropy of the cone measure of $K$ and the cone measure of $K^\circ$, as the limit of the volume difference of $K$ and $L_p$-centroid bodies. We investigate properties of $Ω_K$ and of related new invariant quantities. In particular, we show new affine isoperimetric inequalities and we show a "information inequality" for convex bodies.
A convex body K has associated with it a unique circumscribed ellipsoid CE(K) with minimum volume, and a unique inscribed ellipsoid IE(K) with maximum volume. We first give a unified, modern exposition of the basic theory of these extremal ellipsoids using the semi-infinite programming approach pioneered by Fritz John in his seminal 1948 paper. We then investigate the automorphism groups of convex bodies and their extremal ellipsoids. We show that if the automorphism group of a convex body K is large enough, then it is possible to determine the extremal ellipsoids CE(K) and IE(K) exactly, usin…
We show that the fundamental objects of the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski theory, namely the $L_p$-affine surface areas for a convex body, are closely related to information theory: they are exponentials of Rényi divergences of the cone measures of a convex body and its polar. We give geometric interpretations for all Rényi divergences $D_α$, not just for the previously treated special case of relative entropy which is the case $α=1$. Now, no symmetry assumptions are needed and, if at all, only very weak regularity assumptions are required. Previously, the relative entropies appeared only after perfor…
Given a convex body $K \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ with the barycenter at the origin we consider the corresponding K{ä}hler-Einstein equation $e^{-Φ} = \det D^2 Φ$. If $K$ is a simplex, then the Ricci tensor of the Hessian metric $D^2 Φ$ is constant and equals $\frac{n-1}{4(n+1)}$. We conjecture that the Ricci tensor of $D^2 Φ$ for arbitrary $K$ is uniformly bounded by $\frac{n-1}{4(n+1)}$ and verify this conjecture in the two-dimensional case. The general case remains open.
We answer in the negative a question by Gruenbaum who asked if there exists a finite basis of affine invariant points. We give a positive answer to another question by Gruenbaum about the "size" of the set of all affine invariant points. Related, we show that the set of all convex bodies K, for which the set of affine invariant points is all of n-dimensional Euclidean space, is dense in the set of convex bodies. Crucial to establish these results, are new affine invariant points, not previously considered in the literature.
We prove new Alexandrov-Fenchel type inequalities and new affine isoperimetric inequalities for mixed $p$-affine surface areas. We introduce a new class of bodies, the illumination surface bodies, and establish some of their properties. We show, for instance, that they are not necessarily convex. We give geometric interpretations of $L_p$ affine surface areas, mixed $p$-affine surface areas and other functionals via these bodies. The surprising new element is that not necessarily convex bodies provide the tool for these interpretations.
We give geometric interpretations of certain affine invariants of convex bodies. The affine invariants are the p-affine surface areas introduced by Lutwak. The geometric interpretations involve generalizations of the Santaló-bodies introduced by the authors in a previous paper.
Sharp Lp affine isoperimetric inequalities are established for the entire class of Lp projection bodies and the entire class of Lp centroid bodies. These new inequalities strengthen the Lp Petty projection and the Lp Busemann--Petty centroid inequality.
This paper is dedicated to the Orlicz-Petty bodies. We first propose the homogeneous Orlicz affine and geominimal surface areas, and establish their basic properties such as homogeneity, affine invariance and affine isoperimetric inequalities. We also prove that the homogeneous geominimal surface areas are continuous, under certain conditions, on the set of convex bodies in terms of the Hausdorff distance. Our proofs rely on the existence of the Orlicz-Petty bodies and the uniform boundedness of the Orlicz-Petty bodies of a convergent sequence of convex bodies. Similar results for the nonhomog…
We introduce f-divergence, a concept from information theory and statistics, for convex bodies in R^n. We prove that f-divergences are SL(n) invariant valuations and we establish an affine isoperimetric inequality for these quantities. We show that generalized affine surface area and in particular the L_p affine surface area from the L_p Brunn Minkowski theory are special cases of f-divergences.
The Blaschke Santaló inequality and the $L_p$ affine isoperimetric inequalities are major inequalities in convex geometry and they have a wide range of applications. Functional versions of the Blaschke Santaló inequality have been established over the years through many contributions. More recently and ongoing, such functional versions have been established for the $L_p$ affine isoperimetric inequalities as well. These functional versions involve notions from information theory, like entropy and divergence. We list stability versions for the geometric inequalities as well as for their function…
We prove the existence of minimizers for some constrained variational problems on $BV(Ω)$, under subcritical and critical restrictions, involving the affine energy introduced by Zhang in \cite{Z}. Related functionals have non-coercive geometry and properties like semicontinuity and affine compactness are deeper in the weak* topology. As a by-product of the theory, extremal functions are shown to exist for various affine Poincaré-Sobolev type inequalities.
The simplex was conjectured to be the extremal convex body for the two following "problems of asymmetry":\\ P1) What is the minimal possible value of the quantity $\max_{K'} |K'|/|K|$? Here, $K'$ ranges over all symmetric convex bodies contained in $K$.\\ P2) What is the maximal possible volume of the Blaschke-body of a convex body of volume 1?\\ Our main result states that (P1) and (P2) admit precisely the same solutions. This complements a result from [{\rm K. Böröczky, I. Bárány, E. Makai Jr. and J. Pach}, Maximal volume enclosed by plates and proof of the chessboard conjecture], Discrete M…
The Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory receives considerable attention recently, and many results in the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski theory have been extended to their Orlicz counterparts. The aim of this paper is to develop Orlicz $L_ϕ$ affine and geominimal surface areas for single convex body as well as for multiple convex bodies, which generalize the $L_p$ (mixed) affine and geominimal surface areas -- fundamental concepts in the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski theory. Our extensions are different from the general affine surface areas by Ludwig (in Adv. Math. 224 (2010)). Moreover, our definitions for Orlicz $…
In contemporary convex geometry, the rapidly developing L_p-Brunn Minkowski theory is a modern analogue of the classical Brunn Minkowski theory. A cornerstone of this theory is the L_p-affine surface area for convex bodies. Here, we introduce a functional form of this concept, for log concave and s-concave functions. We show that the new functional form is a generalization of the original L_p-affine surface area. We prove duality relations and affine isoperimetric inequalities for log concave and s-concave functions. This leads to a new inverse log-Sobolev inequality for s-concave densities.
This paper aims to develop basic theory for the dual Orlicz $L_ϕ$ affine and geominimal surface areas for star bodies, which belong to the recent dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory for star bodies. Basic properties for these new affine invariants will be provided. Moreover, related Orlicz affine isoperimetric inequality, cyclic inequality, Santaló style inequality and Alexander-Fenchel type inequality are established.
An affine invariant point on the class of convex bodies in R^n, endowed with the Hausdorff metric, is a continuous map p which is invariant under one-to-one affine transformations A on R^n, that is, p(A(K))=A(p(K)). We define here the new notion of dual affine point q of an affine invariant point p by the formula q(K^{p(K)})=p(K) for every convex body K, where K^{p(K)} denotes the polar of K with respect to p(K). We investigate which affine invariant points do have a dual point, whether this dual point is unique and has itself a dual point. We define a product on the set of affine invariant po…
We extend the definition of the centroid body operator to an Orlicz--Lorentz centroid body operator on the star bodies in $\mathbb R^n$, and establish the sharp affine isoperimetric inequality that bounds (from below) the volume of the Orlicz--Lorentz centroid body of any convex body containing the origin in its interior by the volume of this convex body.
We consider the question how well a floating body can be approximated by the polar of the illumination body of the polar. We establish precise convergence results in the case of centrally symmetric polytopes. This leads to a new affine invariant which is related to the cone measure of the polytope.
We prove that the reciprocal of the volume of the polar bodies, about the Santaló point, of a {\em shadow system} of convex bodies $K_t$, is a convex function of $t$. Thus extending to the non-symmetric case a result of Campi and Gronchi. The case that the reciprocal of the volume is an affine function of $t$ is also investigated and is characterized under certain conditions. We apply these results to prove exact reverse Santaló inequality for polytopes in $\rd{d}$ that have at most $d+3$ vertices.
Employing the affine normal flow, we prove a stability version of the $p$-affine isoperimetric inequality for $p\geq1$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ in the class of origin-symmetric convex bodies. That is, if $K$ is an origin-symmetric convex body in $\mathbb{R}^2$ such that it has area $π$ and its $p$-affine perimeter is close enough to the one of an ellipse with the same area, then, after applying a special linear transformation, $K$ is close to an ellipse in the Hausdorff distance.
The affine quermassintegrals associated to a convex body in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are affine-invariant analogues of the classical intrinsic volumes from the Brunn-Minkowski theory, and thus constitute a central pillar of affine convex geometry. They were introduced in the 1980's by E. Lutwak, who conjectured that among all convex bodies of a given volume, the $k$-th affine quermassintegral is minimized precisely on the family of ellipsoids. The known cases $k=1$ and $k=n-1$ correspond to the classical Blaschke-Santaló and Petty projection inequalities, respectively. In this work we confirm Lutwak's c…
Let $K$ be a convex body in ${\bf R}^n$ and $B$ be the Euclidean unit ball in ${\bf R}^n$. We show that $$\mbox{lim}_{t\rightarrow 0} \frac{|K| -|K_t|}{|B| - |B_t|}= \frac{as(K)}{as(B)},$$ where $as(K)$ respectively $as(B)$ is the affine surface area of $K$ respectively $B$ and $\{K_t\}_{t\geq 0}$, $\{B_t\}_{t\geq 0}$ are general families of convex bodies constructed from $K$, $B$ satifying certain conditions. As a corollary we get results obtained in [M-W], [Schm],[S-W] and[W].
We prove that for any compact set B in R^d and for any epsilon >0 there is a finite subset X of B of |X|=d^{O(1/epsilon^2)} points such that the maximum absolute value of any linear function ell: R^d --> R on X approximates the maximum absolute value of ell on B within a factor of epsilon sqrt{d}. We also discuss approximations of convex bodies by projections of spectrahedra, that is, by projections of sections of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices by affine subspaces.
