The main contribution of this paper is twofold: On the one hand, a general framework for performing Hermite interpolation on Riemannian manifolds is presented. The method is applicable, if algorithms for the associated Riemannian exponential and logarithm mappings are available. This includes many of the matrix manifolds that arise in practical Riemannian computing application such as data analysis and signal processing, computer vision and image processing, structured matrix optimization problems and model reduction.
On the other hand, we expose a natural relation between data processing errors and the sectional curvature of the manifold in question. This provides general error bounds for manifold data processing methods that rely on Riemannian normal coordinates.
Numerical experiments are conducted for the compact Stiefel manifold of rectangular column-orthogonal matrices. As use cases, we compute Hermite interpolation curves for orthogonal matrix factorizations such as the singular value decomposition and the QR-decomposition.
The aim of this paper is to study the approximation of functions using a higher order Hermite-Fejer interpolation process on the unit circle. The system of nodes is composed of vertically projected zeros of Jacobi polynomials onto the unit circle with boundary points at $ \pm1 $. Values of the polynomial and its first four derivatives are fixed by the interpolation conditions at the nodes. Convergence of the process is obtained for analytic functions on a suitable domain, and the rate of convergence is estimated.

We describe a general approach for constructing a broad class of operators approximating high-dimensional curves based on geometric Hermite data. The geometric Hermite data consists of point samples and their associated tangent vectors of unit length. Extending the classical Hermite interpolation of functions, this geometric Hermite problem has become popular in recent years and has ignited a series of solutions in the 2D plane and 3D space. Here, we present a method for approximating curves, which is valid in any dimension. A basic building block of our approach is a Hermite average - a notio…
The construction of smooth spatial paths with Pythagorean-hodograph (PH) quintic spline biarcs is proposed. To facilitate real-time computations of $C^2$ PH quintic splines, an efficient local data stream interpolation algorithm is introduced. Each spline segment interpolates second and first order Hermite data at the initial and final end-point, respectively. In the spline extension of the scheme a $C^2$ smooth connection between successive spline segments is obtained by taking the locally required second-order derivative information from the previous segment. Consequently, the data stream sp…

The library QIBSH++ is a C++ object oriented library for the solution of Quasi Interpolation problems. The library is based on a Hermite Quasi Interpolating operator, which was derived as continuous extensions of linear multistep methods applied for the numerical solution of Boundary Value Problems for Ordinary Differential Equations. The library includes the possibility to use Hermite data or to apply a finite difference scheme for derivative approximations, when derivative values are not directly available. The generalization of the quasi interpolation procedure to surfaces and volumes appro…
In this paper, we propose two methods for multivariate Hermite interpolation of manifold-valued functions. On the one hand, we approach the problem via computing suitable weighted Riemannian barycenters. To satisfy the conditions for Hermite interpolation, the sampled derivative information is converted into a condition on the derivatives of the associated weight functions. It turns out that this requires the solution of linear systems of equations, but no vector transport is necessary. This approach treats all given sample data points equally and is intrinsic in the sense that it does not dep…

We prove quartic convergence of cubic spline interpolation for curves into Riemannian manifolds as the grid size of the interpolation grid tends to zero. In contrast to cubic spline interpolation in Euclidean space, where this result is classical, the interpolation operator is no longer linear. Still, concepts from the linear setting may be generalized to the Riemannian case, where we try to use intrinsic Riemannian formulations and avoid charts as much as possible.
In this paper we present a construction of interpolatory Hermite multiwavelets for functions that take values in nonlinear geometries such as Riemannian manifolds or Lie groups. We rely on the strong connection between wavelets and subdivision schemes to define a prediction-correction approach based on Hermite subdivision schemes that operate on manifold-valued data. The main result concerns the decay of the wavelet coefficients: We show that our manifold-valued construction essentially admits the same coefficient decay as linear Hermite wavelets, which also generalizes results on manifold-val…

The Hermite methods of Goodrich, Hagstrom, and Lorenz (2006) use Hermite interpolation to construct high order numerical methods for hyperbolic initial value problems. The structure of the method has several favorable features for parallel computing. In this work, we propose algorithms that take advantage of the many-core architecture of Graphics Processing Units. The algorithm exploits the compact stencil of Hermite methods and uses data structures that allow for efficient data load and stores. Additionally the highly localized evolution operator of Hermite methods allows us to combine multi-…
A high order finite difference method is proposed for unstructured meshes to simulate compressible inviscid/viscous flows with/without discontinuities. In this method, based on the strong form equation, the divergence of the flux on each vertex is computed directly from fluxes nearby by means of high order least-square. In order to capture discontinuities, numerical flux of high order accuracy is calculated on each edge and serves as supporting data of the least-square computation of the divergence. The high accuracy of the numerical flux depends on the high order WENO interpolation on each ed…
Interpolation of data represented in curvilinear coordinates and possibly having some non-trivial, typically Riemannian or semi-Riemannian geometry is an ubiquitous task in all of physics. In this work we present a covariant generalization of the barycentric coordinates and the barycentric interpolation method for Riemannian and semi-Riemannian spaces of arbitrary dimension. We show that our new method preserves the linear accuracy property of barycentric interpolation in a coordinate-invariant sense. In addition, we show how the method can be used to interpolate constrained quantities so that…
Spline interpolation has been used in several applications due to its favorable properties regarding smoothness and accuracy of the interpolant. However, when there exists a discontinuity or a steep gradient in the data, some artifacts can appear due to the Gibbs phenomenon. Also, preservation of data monotonicity is a requirement in some applications, and that property is not automatically verified by the interpolator. In this paper, we study sufficient conditions to obtain monotone cubic splines based on Hermite cubic interpolators and propose different ways to construct them using non-linea…
A new application of subspaces interpolation for the construction of nonlinear Parametric Reduced Order Models (PROMs) is proposed. This approach is based upon the Riemannian geometry of the manifold formed by the quotient of the set of full-rank N-by-q matrices by the orthogonal group of dimension q. By using a set of untrained parametrized Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) subspaces of dimension q, the subspace for a new untrained parameter is obtained as the generalized Karcher barycenter which solution is sought after by solving a simple fixed point problem. Contrary to existing PROM a…
We study the interpolation analogue of the Hermite-Padé type I approximation problem. We provide its determinant solution and we write down the corresponding integrable discrete system as an admissible reduction of Hirota's discrete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations. Apart from the $τ$-function form of the system we provide its variant, which in the simplest case of dimension two reduces to the non-autonomous discrete-time Toda equations.
