The Euclidean Algorithm is the often forgotten key to rational approximation techniques, including Taylor, Lagrange, Hermite, osculating, cubic spline, Chebyshev, Pade and other interpolation schemes. A unified view of these various interpolation techniques is eloquently expressed in terms of the concept of the spectral basis of a factor ring of polynomials. When these methods are applied to the minimal polynomial of a matrix, they give a family of rational forms of functions of that matrix.
In this paper, applied strictly monotonic increasing scaled maps, a kind of well-conditioned linear barycentric rational interpolations are proposed to approximate functions of singularities at the origin, such as $x^α$ for $α\in (0,1)$ and $\log(x)$. It just takes $O(N)$ flops and can achieve fast convergence rates with the choice the scaled parameter, where $N$ is the maximum degree of the denominator and numerator. The construction of the rational interpolant couples rational polynomials in the barycentric form of second kind with the transformed Jacobi-Gauss-Lobatto points. Numerical exper…
Adaptive rational interpolation has been designed in the context of image processing as a new nonlinear technique that avoids the Gibbs phenomenon when we approximate a discontinuous function. In this work, we present a generalization to the method giving explicit expressions for all the weights for any order of the algorithm. It has a similar behavior to weighted essentially non oscillatory (WENO) technique, however because of the design of the weights in this case is more simple, we propose a new way to construct them obtaining the maximum order near the discontinuities. Some experiments are…
In this paper, we study how to quickly compute the <-minimal monomial interpolating basis for a multivariate polynomial interpolation problem. We address the notion of "reverse" reduced basis of linearly independent polynomials and design an algorithm for it. Based on the notion, for any monomial ordering we present a new method to read off the <-minimal monomial interpolating basis from monomials appearing in the polynomials representing the interpolation conditions.

Loewner rational interpolation provides a versatile tool to learn low-dimensional dynamical-system models from frequency-response measurements. This work investigates the robustness of the Loewner approach to noise. The key finding is that if the measurements are polluted with Gaussian noise, then the error due to noise grows at most linearly with the standard deviation with high probability under certain conditions. The analysis gives insights into making the Loewner approach robust against noise via linear transformations and judicious selections of measurements. Numerical results demonstrat…
This paper investigates some univariate and bivariate constrained interpolation problems using rational quartic fractal interpolation functions, which has been submitted long back in a reputed journal and revised as per the journal requirement. This research is extension of the work [S. K. Katiyar and A. K. B. Chand, Shape Preserving Rational Quartic Fractal Functions, Fractal, in Press].
Iteration methods based on barycentric rational interpolation are derived that exhibit accelerating orders of convergence. For univariate root search, the derivative-free methods approach quadratic convergence and the first-derivative methods approach cubic convergence. For univariate optimisation, the convergence order of the derivative-free methods approaches 1.62 and the order of the first-derivative methods approaches 2.42. Generally, performance advantages are found with respect to low-memory iteration methods. In optimisation problems where the objective function and gradient is calculat…
We present a novel projection-based model reduction framework for parametric linear time-invariant systems that allows interpolating the transfer function at a given frequency point along parameter-dependent curves as opposed to the standard approach where transfer function interpolation is achieved for a discrete set of parameter and frequency samples. We accomplish this goal by using parameter-dependent projection spaces. Our main result shows that for holomorphic system matrices, the corresponding interpolatory projection spaces are also holomorphic. The coefficients of the power series rep…
For the interpolation of graph signals with generalized shifts of a graph basis function (GBF), we introduce the concept of positive definite functions on graphs. This concept merges kernel-based interpolation with spectral theory on graphs and can be regarded as a graph analog of radial basis function interpolation in euclidean spaces or spherical basis functions. We provide several descriptions of positive definite functions on graphs, the most relevant one is a Bochner-type characterization in terms of positive Fourier coefficients. These descriptions allow us to design GBF's and to study G…
We propose a model order reduction approach for non-intrusive surrogate modeling of parametric dynamical systems. The reduced model over the whole parameter space is built by combining surrogates in frequency only, built at few selected values of the parameters. This, in particular, requires matching the respective poles by solving an optimization problem. If the frequency surrogates are constructed by a suitable rational interpolation strategy, frequency and parameters can both be sampled in an adaptive fashion. This, in general, yields frequency surrogates with different numbers of poles, a …
The present paper is focused on the comparison of the efficiency of two important meshless interpolants for gravity acceleration interpolation. Compactly-supported spherical radial basis functions and interpolating moving least squares are used to interpolate actual gravity accelerations in southern Africa. Interpolated values are compared with actual values, gathered by observation. A thorough analysis is presented for the standard deviation of the differences between interpolated and actual values. Three different class of spherical radial basis functions-Poisson, singularity, and logarithmi…
We present a new method for the solution of PDEs on manifolds $\mathbb{M} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ of co-dimension one using stable scale-free radial basis function (RBF) interpolation. Our method involves augmenting polyharmonic spline (PHS) RBFs with polynomials to generate RBF-finite difference (RBF-FD) formulas. These polynomial basis elements are obtained using the recently-developed \emph{least orthogonal interpolation} technique (LOI) on each RBF-FD stencil to obtain \emph{local} restrictions of polynomials in $\mathbb{R}^3$ to stencils on $\mathbb{M}$. The resulting RBF-LOI method uses Ca…
A new computational framework for evaluation of the gamma function $Γ(z)$ over the complex plane is developed. The algorithm is based on interpolation by rational functions, and generalizes the classical methods of Lanczos \cite{Lanczos} and Spouge \cite{Spouge} (which we show are also interpolatory). This framework utilizes the exact poles of the gamma function. By relaxing this condition and allowing the poles to vary, a near-optimal rational approximation is possible, which is demonstrated using the adaptive Antoulous Anderson (AAA) algorithm, developed in \cite{AAA,AAA_2020}. The resulting…
We show that highly accurate approximations can often be obtained from constructing Thiele interpolating continued fractions by a Greedy selection of the interpolation points together with an early termination condition. The obtained results are comparable with the outcome from state-of-the-art rational interpolation techniques based on the barycentric form.
This work suggests an interpolation-based stochastic collocation method for the non-intrusive and adaptive construction of sparse polynomial chaos expansions (PCEs). Unlike pseudo-spectral projection and regression-based stochastic collocation methods, the proposed approach results in PCEs featuring one polynomial term per collocation point. Moreover, the resulting PCEs are interpolating, i.e., they are exact on the interpolation nodes/collocation points. Once available, an interpolating PCE can be used as an inexpensive surrogate model, or be post-processed for the purposes of uncertainty qua…
In the era of big data, we first need to manage the data, which requires us to find missing data or predict the trend, so we need operations including interpolation and data fitting. Interpolation is a process to discover deducing new data points in a range through known and discrete data points. When solving scientific and engineering problems, data points are usually obtained by sampling, experiments, and other methods. These data may represent a finite number of numerical functions in which the values of independent variables. According to these data, we often want to get a continuous funct…
One strategy to solve a nonlinear eigenvalue problem $T(λ)x=0$ is to solve a polynomial eigenvalue problem (PEP) $P(λ)x=0$ that approximates the original problem through interpolation. Then, this PEP is usually solved by linearization. Most of the literature about linearizations assumes that $P(λ)$ is expressed in the monomial basis but, because of the polynomial approximation techniques, in this context, $P(λ)$ is expressed in a non-monomial basis. The bases used with most frequency are the Chebyshev basis, the Newton basis and the Lagrange basis. In this paper we construct a family of linear…
We derive a Fast Multipole Method (FMM) where a low-rank approximation of the kernel is obtained using the Empirical Interpolation Method (EIM). Contrary to classical interpolation-based FMM, where the interpolation points and basis are fixed beforehand, the EIM is a nonlinear approximation method which constructs interpolation points and basis which are adapted to the kernel under consideration. The basis functions are obtained using evaluations of the kernel itself. We restrict ourselves to translation-invariant kernels, for which a modified version of the EIM approximation can be used in a …

In this paper, the accuracy of two mesh-free approximation approaches, the Gravity model and Radial Basis Function, are compared. The two schemes' convergence behaviors prove that RBF is faster and more accurate than the Gravity model. As a case study, the interpolation of temperature at different locations in Tennesse, USA, are compared. Delaunay mesh generation is used to create random points inside and on the border, which data can be incorporated in these locations. 49 MERRA weather stations as used as data sources to provide the temperature at a specific day and hour. The contours of inte…
We investigate the problem of approximating the matrix function $f(A)$ by $r(A)$, with $f$ a Markov function, $r$ a rational interpolant of $f$, and $A$ a symmetric Toeplitz matrix. In a first step, we obtain a new upper bound for the relative interpolation error $1-r/f$ on the spectral interval of $A$. By minimizing this upper bound over all interpolation points, we obtain a new, simple and sharp a priori bound for the relative interpolation error. We then consider three different approaches of representing and computing the rational interpolant $r$. Theoretical and numerical evidence is give…
We propose AAA rational approximation as a method for interpolating or approximating smooth functions from equispaced data samples. Although it is always better to approximate from large numbers of samples if they are available, whether equispaced or not, this method often performs impressively even when the sampling grid is fairly coarse. In most cases it gives more accurate approximations than other methods.
