Binoid schemes generalise monoid schemes, which in turn enable us to generalise toric varieties. Let $X$ be a binoid scheme. The aim of this paper is to calculate the topological fundamental group of $KX$, where $K=\mathbb{C}$ or $\mathbb{R}$. For the latter, we will give an explicit way of calculating the fundamental group using methods from 2-category theory. Indeed, we will calculate the more general fundamental groupoid.
As a specialisation, we will also look at the Stanley Reisner Rings. Our method simplifies in this case, allowing us to describe the fundamental groupoid in terms of the simplicial complex directly.
In this article, we introduce an approach to study the fundamental group of a log terminal T-variety. As applications, we prove the simply connectedness of the spectrum of the Cox ring of a complex Fano variety, we compute the fundamental group of a rational log terminal T-varieties of complexity one, and we study the local fundamental group of log terminal T-singularities with a good torus action and trivial GIT decomposition.
Lasell and Ramachandran show that the existence of rational curves of positive self-intersection on a smooth projective surface $X$ implies that all the finite dimensional linear representations of the fundamental group $π_1(X)$ are finite. In this article, we generalize Lasell and Ramachandran's result to the case of $π_1$-small divisors on quasiprojective varieties. We also study $π_1$-small curves and hyperbolicity properties of smooth projective surfaces of general type with infinite fundamental groups.
Let X be a Fano manifold of dimension n and index n-3. Kawamata proved the non vanishing of the global sections of the fundamental divisor in the case n=4. Moreover he proved that if Y is a general element of the fundamental system then Y has at most canonical singularities. We prove a generalization of this result in arbitrary dimension.
Let U be an open subset of a unirational variety (or more generally of a separably rationally connected variety). We prove that there is rational curve C in U such that the fundamental group of C surjects onto the fundamental group of U. The proof improves the earlier proof (math.AG/0003138) and works in any characteristic. Much improved version, thanks to comments of Colliot-Thélène.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field. Chambert-Loir proved that the étale fundamental group of a normal rationally chain connected variety over $k$ is finite. We prove that the fundamental group scheme of a normal rationally chain connected variety over $k$ is finite and étale. In particular, the fundamental group scheme of a Fano variety is finite and étale.
In this paper we express the class of the structure sheaves of the closures of Deligne--Lusztig varieties as explicit double Grothendieck polynomials in the first Chern classes of appropriate line bundles on the ambient flag variety. This is achieved by viewing such closures as degeneracy loci of morphisms of vector bundles.
We study the commutator subgroup of integral orthogonal groups belonging to indefinite quadratic forms. We show that the index of this commutator is 2 for many groups that occur in the construction of moduli spaces in algebraic geometry, in particular the moduli of K3 surfaces. We give applications to modular forms and to computing the fundamental groups of some moduli spaces.
Let U be an open subset of a unirational variety. We prove that there is rational curve C in U such that the fundamental group of C surjects onto the fundamental group of U. As a consequence we obtain new proofs of the theorems of Harbater and Colliot-Thélène on Galois covers and torsors over the p-adic line. We also obtain examples of pencils of curves of genus <14 whose monodromy group is the full Teichmüller group.
We compute the fundamental group of an open Richardson variety in the manifold of complete flags that corresponds to a partial flag manifold. Rietsch showed that these log Calabi-Yau varieties underlie a Landau-Ginzburg mirror for the Langlands dual partial flag manifold, and our computation verifies a prediction of Hori for this mirror. It is log Calabi-Yau as it isomorphic to the complement of the Knutson-Lam-Speyer anti-canonical divisor for the partial flag manifold. We also determine explicit defining equations for this divisor.
We consider the structure of classes of curves on a projective simply connected surface for which fundamental groups of the complements admit free quotients having rank greater than one with irreducible components belonging to a selected subset the effective cone of the surface. In particular we show a finiteness result for such classes if the ranks of free quotients of the fundamental groups with components in the subset of effective cone are sufficiently large.
We formulate and prove a generalization of Zariski-van Kampen theorem on the topological fundamental groups of smooth complex algebraic varieties. As an application, we prove a hyperplane section theorem of Lefschetz-Zariski-van Kampen type for the fundamental groups of the complements to the Grassmannian dual varieties.
The fundamental group of a smooth projective variety is fibered if it maps onto the fundamental group of smooth curve of genus 2 or more. The goal of this paper is to establish some strong restrictions on these groups, and in particular on the fundamental groups of Kodaira surfaces. In the specific case of a Kodaira surface, these results are in the form of restrictions on the monodromy representation into the mapping class group. When the monodromy is composed with certain standard representations, the images are Zariski dense in a semisimple group of Hermitian type.
Euler-symmetric projective varieties are nondegenerate projective varieties admitting many C*-actions of Euler type. They are quasi-homogeneous and uniquely determined by their fundamental forms at a general point. We show that Euler-symmetric projective varieties can be classified by symbol systems, a class of algebraic objects modeled on the systems of fundamental forms at general points of projective varieties. We study relations between the algebraic properties of symbol systems and the geometric properties of Euler-symmetric projective varieties. We describe also the relation between Eule…
Given a complex variety $X$, a linear algebraic group $G$ and a representation $ρ$ of the fundamental group $π\_1(X,x)$ into $G$, we develop a framework for constructing a functorial mixed Hodge structure on the formal local ring of the representation variety of $π\_1(X,x)$ into $G$ at $ρ$ using mixed Hodgediagrams and methods of $L\_\infty$ algebras. We apply it in two geometric situations: either when $X$ is compact K{ä}hler and $ρ$ is the monodromy of a variation of Hodge structure, or when $X$ is smooth quasi-projective and $ρ$ has finite image.
We study 3 basic questions about fundamental groups of algebraic varieties. For a morphism, is being surjective on $π_1$ preserved by base change? What is the connection between openness in the Zariski and in the Euclidean topologies? Which morphisms have the path lifting property?
Let $X$ be a Gorenstein canonical Fano variety of coindex $4$ and dimension $n$ with $H$ fundamental divisor. Assume $h^0(X, H) \geq n -2$. We prove that a general element of the linear system $|mH|$ has at worst canonical singularities for any integer $m \geq 1$. When $X$ has terminal singularities and $n \geq 5$, we show that a general element of $|mH|$ has at worst terminal singularities for any integer $m \geq 1$. When $n=4$, we give an example of Gorenstein terminal Fano fourfold $X$ such that a general element of $|H|$ does not have terminal singularities.
In this paper, using Gromov-Jost-Korevaar-Schoen technique of harmonic maps to nonpositively curved targets, we study the representations of the fundamental groups of quasiprojective varieties. As an application of the above considerations we give a proof of a weak version of the Shafarevich Conjecture.
The fundamental property of Fano varieties with mild singularities is that they have a finite polyhedral Mori cone. Thus, it is very interesting to ask: What we can say about algebraic varieties with a finite polyhedral Mori cone? I give a review of known results. All of them were obtained applying methods which were originated in the theory of discrete groups generated by reflections in hyperbolic spaces with a fundamental chamber of finite volume. This is my report on Fano conference in Torino, October 2002
We show that the fundamental groups of normal complex algebraic varieties share many properties of the fundamental groups of smooth varieties. The jump loci of rank one local systems on a normal variety are related to the jump loci of a resolution and of a smoothing of this variety.
Take a bounded symmetric domain $D$ and an arithmetic subgroup $Γ$ of ${\rm Aut}(D)$. Take the quotient $D/Γ$, compactify and resolve the singularities. We study the fundamental group of the compact complex manifolds that result from this procedure, and in particular the case of Siegel modular threefolds.
In this paper we calculate fundamental groups (and some of their quotients) of complements of four toric varieties branch curves. For these calculations, we study properties and degenerations of these toric varieties and the braid monodromies of the branch curves in $\mathbb{CP}^2$. The fundamental groups related to the first three toric varieties turn to be quotients of the Artin braid groups $\mathcal{B}_5$, $\mathcal{B}_6$, and $\mathcal{B}_4$, while the fourth one is a certain quotient of the group $\tilde{\mathcal{B}}_6 = \mathcal{B}_6/<[X,Y]>$, where $X, Y$ are transversal. The quotients…
We study the base locus of the higher fundamental forms of a projective toric variety $X$ at a general point. More precisely we consider the closure $X$ of the image of a map $({\mathbb C}^*)^k\to {\mathbb P}^n$, sending $t$ to the vector of Laurent monomials with exponents $p_0,\dots,p_n\in {\mathbb Z}^k$. We prove that the $m$-th fundamental form of such an $X$ at a general point has non empty base locus if and only if the points $p_i$ lie on a suitable degree-$m$ affine hypersurface. We then restrict to the case in which the points $p_i$ are all the lattice points of a lattice polytope and …
We show that for any given field $k$ and natural number $r\geq2$, every continuous extension of the absolute Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}_k$ by a finite group is the arithmetic fundamental group of a geometrically connected smooth projective variety over $k$ of dimension $r$.
We discuss two results about projective representations of fundamental groups of quasiprojective varieties. The first is a realization result which, under a nonresonance assumption, allows to realize such representations as monodromy representations of flat projective logarithmic connections. The second is a lifting result: any representation as above, after restriction to a Zariski open set and finite pull-back, can be lifted to a linear representation.
We prove that for every finitely-presented group G there exists a 2-dimensional irreducible complex-projective variety W with the fundamental group G, so that all singularities of W are normal crossings and Whitney umbrellas.
We investigate properties of the Albanese map and the fundamental group of a complex projective variety with many rational points over some function field, and prove that every linear quotient of the fundamental group of such a variety is virtually abelian, as well as that its Albanese map is surjective, has connected fibres, and has no multiple fibres in codimension one.
We prove a character formula for some closed fine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We apply it to compute fixed points for fine Deligne-Lusztig varieties arising from the basic loci of Shimura varieties of Coxeter type. As an application, we prove an arithmetic intersection formula for certain diagonal cycles on unitary and GSpin Rapoport-Zink spaces arising from the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures. In particular, we prove the arithmetic fundamental lemma in the minuscule case, without assumptions on the residual characteristic.
First, we consider a compact real-analytic irreducible subvariety $M$ in a sphere and its dual variety $M^\vee$. We explain that two matrices of the second fundamental forms for both varieties $M$ and $M^\vee$ can be regarded as the inverse matrices of each other. Also generalization in hyperbolic space is explained.
The present note is devoted to an amendment to a recent paper of Ellenberg, Lawrence and Venkatesh. Roughly speaking, the main result here states the subpolynomial growth of the number of integral points with bounded height of a variety over a number field whose fundamental group is large. Such an improvement, i.e. requiring large fundamental group as opposed to the existence of a geometric variation of pure Hodge structures, was already asked in op.cit..
The present paper studies the structure of characteristic varieties of fundamental groups of graph manifolds. As a consequence, a simple proof of Papadima's question is provided on the characterization of algebraic links that have quasi-projective fundamental groups. The type of quasi-projective obstructions used here are in the spirit of Papadima's original work.
A fundamental goal of algebraic geometry is to do for singular varieties whatever we can do for smooth ones. Intersection homology, for example, directly produces groups associated to any variety which have almost all the properties of the usual homology groups of a smooth variety. Minimal model theory suggests the possibility of working more indirectly by relating any singular variety to a variety which is smooth or nearly so. Here we use ideas from minimal model theory to define some characteristic numbers for singular varieties, generalizing the Chern numbers of a smooth variety. This was s…
We reprove Kuznetsov's "fundamental theorem of homological projective duality" using LG models and variation of GIT stability. This extends the validity of the theorem from smooth varieties to nice subcategories of smooth quotient stacks, and moreover shows that the line bundles polarising the varieties in HP duality do not have to be globally generated. The proof combines ideas from Kuznetsov's original proof with ideas from work of Ballard-Deliu-Favero-Isik-Katzarkov.
In this paper, using the method of moving frames, we generalise some of Terracini's results on varieties with tangent defect. In particular, we characterise varieties with higher order osculating defect in terms of Jacobians of higher fundamental forms and moreover we characterise varieties with "small" higher fundamental forms as contained in scrolls.
In this article, we generalize several fundamental results for arithmetic divisors, such as the continuity of the volume function, the generalized Hodge index theorem, Fujita's approximation theorem for arithmetic divisors and Zariski decompositions for arithmetic divisors on arithmetic surfaces, to the case of the adelic arithmetic divisors.
The classical Zariski-van Kampen theorem gives a presentation of the fundamental group of the complement of a complex algebraic curve in $\mathbb{P}^2$. The first generalization of this theorem to singular (quasi-projective) varieties was given by the first author. In both cases, the relations are generated by the standard monodromy variation operators associated with the special members of a generic pencil of hyperplane sections. In the present paper, we give a new generalization in which the relations are generated by the relative monodromy variation operators introduced by D. Chéniot and th…
Given a quasi-projective variety X with only Kawamata log terminal singularities, we study the obstructions to extending finite étale covers from the smooth locus $X_{\mathrm{reg}}$ of $X$ to $X$ itself. A simplified version of our main results states that there exists a Galois cover $Y \rightarrow X$, ramified only over the singularities of $X$, such that the étale fundamental groups of $Y$ and of $Y_{\mathrm{reg}}$ agree. In particular, every étale cover of $Y_{\mathrm{reg}}$ extends to an étale cover of $Y$. As first major application, we show that every flat holomorphic bundle defined on $…
We investigate the holonomy group of singular Kähler-Einstein metrics on klt varieties with numerically trivial canonical divisor. Finiteness of the number of connected components, a Bochner principle for holomorphic tensors, and a connection between irreducibility of holonomy representations and stability of the tangent sheaf are established. As a consequence, known decompositions for tangent sheaves of varieties with trivial canonical divisor are refined. In particular, we show that up to finite quasi-étale covers, varieties with strongly stable tangent sheaf are either Calabi-Yau or irreduc…
By the fundamental work of Griffiths one knows that, under suitable assumption, homological and algebraic equivalence do not coincide for a general hypersurface section of a smooth projective variety $Y$. In the present paper we prove the same result in case $Y$ has isolated singularities.
Let $G$ be the fundamental group of the complement of the torus knot of type $(m,n)$. This has a presentation $G=<x,y|x^m=y^n>$. We find the geometric description of the character variety $X(G)$ of characters of representations of $G$ into $SL(2,C)$.
The paper studies a relation between fundamental group of the complement to a plane singular curve and the orbifold pencils containing it. The main tool is the use of Albanese varieties of cyclic covers ramified along such curves. Our results give sufficient conditions for a plane singular curve to belong to an orbifold pencil, i.e. a pencil of plane curves with multiple fibers inducing a map onto an orbifold curve whose orbifold fundamental group is non trivial. We construct an example of a cyclic cover of the projective plane which is an abelian surface isomorphic to the Jacobian of a curve …
We show that conjugation by an automorphism of the complex numbers (as an abstract field) may change the topological fundamental group of a locally symmetric variety over C. As a consequence, we obtain a large class of algebraic varieties defined over number fields with the property that different embeddings of the number field into C give complex varieties with nonisomorphic fundamental groups.
This paper constructs cospecialization homomorphisms between the (p') versions of the tempered fundamental group of the fibers of a smooth morphism with polystable reduction (the tempered fundamental group is a sort of analog of the topological fundamental group of complex algebraic varieties in the p-adic world). We studied the question for families of curves in another paper. To construct them, we will start by describing the pro-(p') tempered fundamental group of a smooth and proper variety with polystable reduction in terms of the reduction endowed with its log structure, thus defining tem…
This paper is an attempt to give some general results on the tempered fundamental group of a $p$-adic smooth algebraic varieties (which is a sort of analog of the topologic fundamental group of complex algebraic varieties in the p-adic world). The main result asserts that one can recover the metric structure of the graph of the stable model of a Mumford curve from the tempered fundamental group of this Mumford curve. We will also prove birational invariance, invariance by algebraically closed extensions and a Kuenneth formula for the tempered fundamental group. We will describe the tempered fu…
This article is based on a talk delivered at the RIMS--OCAMI Joint International Conference on Geometry Related to Integrable Systems in September, 2007. Its aim is to review a recent progress in the Hitchin integrable systems and character varieties of the fundamental groups of Riemann surfaces. A survey on geometric aspects of these character varieties is also provided as we develop the exposition from a simple case to more elaborate cases.
For each integer n\ge 2, we construct an irreducible, smooth, complex projective variety M of dimension n, whose fundamental group has infinitely generated homology in degree n+1 and whose universal cover is a Stein manifold, homotopy equivalent to an infinite bouquet of n-dimensional spheres. This non-finiteness phenomenon is also reflected in the fact that the homotopy group π_n(M), viewed as a module over Zπ_1(M), is free of infinite rank. As a result, we give a negative answer to a question of Koll'ar on the existence of quasi-projective classifying spaces (up to commensurability) for the …
This is a long overdue write up of the following: If the fundamental group of a normal complex algebraic variety (respectively Zariski open subset of a compact Kähler manifold) is a solvable group of matrices over Q (respectively polycyclic group), then it is virtually nilpotent. This should be interpreted as saying that a large class of solvable groups will not occur as fundamental groups of such spaces. The essential strategy is to first "complete" these groups to algebraic groups (generalizing constructions of Malcev and Mostow), and then check that the identity component is unipotent. This…
