We derive explicit Krein resolvent identities for generally singular Sturm-Liouville operators in terms of boundary condition bases and the Lagrange bracket. As an application of the resolvent identities obtained, we compute the trace of the resolvent difference of a pair of self-adjoint realizations of the Bessel expression $-d^2/dx^2+(ν^2-(1/4))x^{-2}$ on $(0,\infty)$ for values of the parameter $ν\in[0,1)$ and use the resulting trace formula to explicitly determine the spectral shift function for the pair.
We study Robin-to-Robin maps, and Krein-type resolvent formulas for Schrödinger operators on bounded Lipschitz domains in $\bbR^n$, $n\ge 2$, with generalized Robin boundary conditions.
In this work we investigate the resolvent operator and completeness of eigenfunctions of a Sturm-Liouville problem with discontinuities at two points. The problem contains an eigenparameter in the one of boundary conditions. For operator-theoretic formulation of the considered problem we define an equivalent inner product in the Hilbert space and suitable self-adjoint lineer operator in it.
We study generalized Robin boundary conditions, Robin-to-Dirichlet maps, and Krein-type resolvent formulas for Schrödinger operators on bounded Lipschitz domains in $\bbR^n$, $n\ge 2$. We also discuss the case of bounded $C^{1,r}$-domains, $(1/2)<r<1$.
The paper reports on a recent construction of M-functions and Krein resolvent formulas for general closed extensions of an adjoint pair, and their implementation to boundary value problems for second-order strongly elliptic operators on smooth domains. The results are then extended to domains with $C^{1,1}$ Hölder smoothness, by use of a recently developed calculus of pseudodifferential boundary operators with nonsmooth symbols.
It is shown that transfer functions, which play a crucial role in M.G. Krein's study of inverse spectral problems, are a proper tool to formulate local spectral uniqueness conditions.
It is shown that M. Krein's method of directing functionals can be used to prove the existence of a scalar spectral measure for certain Sturm-Liouville equations with two singular endpoints. The essential assumption is the existence of a solution of the equation that is square integrable at one singular endpoint and depends analytically on the eigenvalue parameter.
We continue the study of boundary data maps, that is, generalizations of spectral parameter dependent Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps for (three-coefficient) Sturm-Liouville operators on the finite interval $(a,b)$, to more general boundary conditions. While earlier studies of boundary data maps focused on the case of general separated boundary conditions at $a$ and $b$, the present work develops a unified treatment for all possible self-adjoint boundary conditions (i.e., separated as well as non-separated ones). In the course of this paper we describe the connections with Krein's resolvent formula …
We prove in this paper resolvent estimates for the boundary values of resolvents of selfadjoint operators on a Krein space: if $H$ is a selfadjoint operator on a Krein space $\cH$, equipped with the Krein scalar product $\langle \cdot| \cdot \rangle$, $A$ is the generator of a $C_{0}-$group on $\cH$ and $I\subset \rr$ is an interval such that: \begin{itemize} \item[]1) $H$ admits a Borel functional calculus on $I$, \item[]2) the spectral projection $\one_{I}(H)$ is positive in the Krein sense, \item[]3) the following {\em positive commutator estimate} holds: \[ \Re \langle u| [H, ıA]u\rangle\g…
We revisit the Krein-von Neumann extension in the case where the underlying symmetric operator is strictly positive and apply this to derive the explicit form of the Krein-von Neumann extension for singular, general (i.e., three-coefficient) Sturm-Liouville operators on arbitrary intervals. In particular, the boundary conditions for the Krein-von Neumann extension of the strictly positive minimal Sturm-Liouville operator are explicitly expressed in terms of generalized boundary values adapted to the (possible) singularity structure of the coefficients near an interval endpoint.
For a second-order symmetric strongly elliptic operator A on a smooth bounded open set Ωin R^n with boundary Σ, the mixed problem is defined by a Neumann-type condition on a part Sigma_+ of the boundary and a Dirichlet condition on the other part Sigma_-. We show a Krein resolvent formula, where the difference between its resolvent and the Dirichlet resolvent is expressed in terms of operators acting on Sobolev spaces over Sigma_+. This is used to obtain a new Weyl-type spectral asymptotics formula for the resolvent difference (where upper estimates were known before), namely s_j j^{2/(n-1)}\t…
This paper has two main goals. First, we are concerned with the classification of self-adjoint extensions of the Laplacian $-Δ\big|_{C^\infty_0(Ω)}$ in $L^2(Ω; d^n x)$. Here, the domain $Ω$ belongs to a subclass of bounded Lipschitz domains (which we term quasi-convex domains), which contain all convex domains, as well as all domains of class $C^{1,r}$, for $r\in(1/2,1)$. Second, we establish Krein-type formulas for the resolvents of the various self-adjoint extensions of the Laplacian in quasi-convex domains and study the properties of the corresponding Weyl--Titchmarsh operators (or energy-d…
We solve the inverse problem from the spectral measure and the inverse three-spectra problem for the class of singular Krein strings on a finite interval with trace class resolvents. In particular, this includes a complete description of all possible spectral measures and three (Dirichlet) spectra associated with this class of Krein strings. The solutions of these inverse problems are obtained by approximation with Stieltjes strings.
In this paper we consider the Sturm-Liuoville operator in the Hilbert space $L_2$ with the singular complex potential of $W^{-1}_2$ and two-point boundary conditions. For this operator we give sufficient conditions for norm resolvent approximation by the operators of the same class.
For a strongly elliptic second-order operator $A$ on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ it has been known for many years how to interpret the general closed $L_2(Ω)$-realizations of $A$ as representing boundary conditions (generally nonlocal), when the domain and coefficients are smooth. The purpose of the present paper is to extend this representation to nonsmooth domains and coefficients, including the case of Hölder $C^{\frac32+\varepsilon}$-smoothness, in such a way that pseudodifferential methods are still available for resolvent constructions and ellipticity considerations. We show…
The aim of this paper is twofold: On one hand we discuss an abstract approach to symmetrized Fredholm perturbation determinants and an associated trace formula for a pair of operators of positive-type, extending a classical trace formula. On the other hand, we continue a recent systematic study of boundary data maps, that is, 2 \times 2 matrix-valued Dirichlet-to-Neumann and more generally, Robin-to-Robin maps, associated with one-dimensional Schrödinger operators on a compact interval [0,R] with separated boundary conditions at 0 and R. One of the principal new results in this paper reduces a…
A special class of generalized Jacobi operators which are self-adjoint in Krein spaces is presented. A description of the resolvent set of such operators in terms of solutions of the corresponding recurrence relations is given. In particular, special attention is paid to the periodic generalized Jacobi operators. Finally, the spectral properties of generalized Jacobi operators are applied to prove convergence results for Padé approximants.
We give a complete description of the set of spectral data (eigenvalues and specially introduced norming constants) for Sturm--Liouville operators on the interval $[0,1]$ with matrix-valued potentials in the Sobolev space $W_2^{-1}$ and suggest an algorithm reconstructing the potential from the spectral data that is based on Krein's accelerant method.
We extend relative oscillation theory to the case of Sturm--Liouville operators $H u = r^{-1}(-(pu')'+q u)$ with different $p$'s. We show that the weighted number of zeros of Wronskians of certain solutions equals the value of Krein's spectral shift function inside essential spectral gaps.
We study the spectrum of a self-adjoint Dirac-Krein operator with potential on a compact star graph $\mathcal G$ with a finite number $n$ of edges. This operator is defined by a Dirac-Krein differential expression with summable matrix potentials on each edge, by self-adjoint boundary conditions at the outer vertices, and by a self-adjoint matching condition at the common central vertex of $\mathcal G$. Special attention is paid to Robin matching conditions with parameter $τ\in\mathbb R\cup\{\infty\}$. Choosing the decoupled operator with Dirichlet condition at the central vertex as a reference…
We introduce a novel approach for dealing with eigenvalue problems of Sturm-Liouville operators generated by the differential expression \begin{equation*} Ly=\frac{1}{r}\left( -(p\left[ y^{\prime }+sy\right] )^{\prime }+sp\left[ y^{\prime }+sy\right] +qy\right) \end{equation*} which is based on norm resolvent convergence of classical Sturm-Liouville operators. This enables us to describe the continuous dependence of the $n$-th eigenvalue on the space of self-adjoint boundary conditions and the coefficients of the differential equation after giving the inequalities among the eigenvalues. Moreov…
Sign type spectra are an important tool in the investigation of spectral properties of selfadjoint operators in Krein spaces. It is our aim to show that also sign type spectra for normal operators in Krein spaces provide insight in the spectral nature of the operator: If the real part and the imaginary part of a normal operator in a Krein space have real spectra only and if the growth of the resolvent of the imaginary part (close to the real axis) is of finite order, then the normal operator possesses a local spectral function defined for Borel subsets of the spectrum which belong to positive …
We consider a singular Sturm-Liouville expression with the indefinite weight sgn x. To this expression there is naturally a self-adjoint operator in some Krein space associated. We characterize the local definitizability of this operator in a neighbourhood of $\infty$. Moreover, in this situation, the point $\infty$ is a regular critical point. We construct an operator $A=(\sgn x)(-d^2/dx^2+q)$ with non-real spectrum accumulating to a real point. The obtained results are applied to several classes of Sturm-Liouville operators.
Let $A_{Q}$ be the self-adjoint operator defined by the $Q$-function $Q:z\mapsto Q_{z}$ through the Krein-like resolvent formula $$(-A_{Q}+z)^{-1}= (-A_{0}+z)^{-1}+G_{z}WQ_{z}^{-1}VG_{\bar z}^{*}\,,\quad z\in Z_{Q}\,,$$ where $V$ and $W$ are bounded operators and $$Z_{Q}:=\{z\inρ(A_{0}):\text{$Q_{z}$ and $Q_{\bar z }$ have a bounded inverse}\}\,.$$ We show that $$Z_{Q}\not=\emptyset\quad\Longrightarrow\quad Z_{Q}=ρ(A_{0})\cap ρ(A_{Q})\,.$$ We do not suppose that $Q$ is represented in terms of a uniformly strict, operator-valued Nevanlinna function (equivalently, we do not assume that $Q$ is as…
Paper deals with the singular Sturm-Liouville expressions $$l(y) = -(py')' + qy$$ on a finite interval with coefficients $$q = Q', \quad 1/p, Q/p, Q^2/p \in L_1,$$ where derivative of the function $Q$ is understood in the sense of distributions. Due to a new regularization corresponding operators are correctly defined as quasi-differential. Their resolvent approximation is investigated and all self-adjoint and maximal dissipative extensions and generalized resolvents are described in terms of homogeneous boundary conditions of the canonic form. Some results are new for the case $p(t)\equiv 1$ …
The principal aim in this paper is to develop an effective and unified approach to the computation of traces of resolvents (and resolvent differences), Fredholm determinants, $ζ$-functions, and $ζ$-function regularized determinants associated with linear operators in a Hilbert space. In particular, we detail the connection between Fredholm and $ζ$-function regularized determinants. Concrete applications of our formalism to general (i.e., three-coefficient) regular Sturm-Liouville operators on compact intervals with various (separated and coupled) boundary conditions, and Schrödinger operators …
We present a new multiparameter resolvent trace expansion for elliptic operators, polyhomogeneous in both the resolvent and auxiliary variables. For elliptic operators on closed manifolds the expansion is a simple consequence of the parameter dependent pseudodifferential calculus. As an additional nontrivial toy example we treat here Sturm-Liouville operators with separated boundary conditions. As an application we give a new formula, in terms of regularized sums, for the zeta-determinant of an infinite direct sum of Sturm-Liouville operators. The Laplace-Beltrami operator on a surface of revo…
We study the multi-interval boundary-value Sturm-Liouville problems with distributional potentials. For the corresponding symmetric operators boundary triplets are found and the constructive descriptions of all self-adjoint, maximal dissipative and maximal accumulative extensions and generalized resolvents in terms of homogeneous boundary conditions are given. It is shown that all real maximal dissipative and maximal accumulative extensions are self-adjoint and all such extensions are described.
Let $λ_j$ be the $j$-th eigenvalue of Sturm-Liouville systems with separated boundary conditions, we build up the Hill-type formula, which represent $\prod\limits_{j}(1-λ_j^{-1})$ as a determinant of finite matrix. This is the first attack on such a formula under non-periodic type boundary conditions. Consequently, we get the Krein-type trace formula based on the Hill-type formula, which express $\sum\limits_{j}{1\over λ_j^m}$ as trace of finite matrices. The trace formula can be used to estimate the conjugate point alone a geodesic in Riemannian manifold and to get some infinite sum identitie…
We give a comprehensive treatment of Sturm-Liouville operators with measure-valued coefficients including, a full discussion of self-adjoint extensions and boundary conditions, resolvents, and Weyl-Titchmarsh theory. We avoid previous technical restrictions and, at the same time, extend all results to a larger class of operators. Our operators include classical Sturm-Liouville operators, Lax operators arising in the treatment of the Camassa-Holm equation, Jacobi operators, and Sturm-Liouville operators on time scales as special cases.
The compression of the resolvent of a non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operator $-Δ+V$ onto a subdomain $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$ is expressed in a Krein-Naimark type formula, where the Dirichlet realization on $Ω$, the Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps, and certain solution operators of closely related boundary value problems on $Ω$ and $\mathbb R^n\setminus\overlineΩ$ are being used. In a more abstract operator theory framework this topic is closely connected and very much inspired by the so-called coupling method that has been developed for the self-adjoint case by Henk de Snoo and his coauthors.
The paper investigates spectral properties of multi-interval Sturm-Liouville operators with distributional coefficients. Constructive descriptions of all self-adjoint and maximal dissipative/accumulative extensions in terms of boundary conditions are given. Sufficient conditions for the resolvents of these operators to be operators of the trace class and for the systems of root functions to be complete are found. Results of paper are new for one-interval boundary value problems as well.
Given two possibly unbounded selfadjoint operators A and G such that the resolvent sets of AG and GA are non-empty, it is shown that the operator AG has a spectral function on IR with singularities if there exists a non-zero polynomial p such that the symmetric operator Gp(AG) is non-negative. This result generalizes a well-known theorem for definitizable operators in Krein spaces.
We consider the boundary problem -y''(x)+q(x)y(x)=f(x), lim_{|x|\to\infty}y^{(i)}(x)=0, i=0,1, where f(x)\in L_p(R), p\in[1,\infty], 1\le q(x)\in L_1^{\loc}(R). For this boundary problem we obtain: 1) necessary and sufficient conditions for unique solvability and a priori properties of the solution; 2) a criterion for the resolvent to be compact in L_p(R), and some a priori properties of the spectrum.
In 1996, H. Volkmer observed that the inequality \[(\int_{-1}^1\frac{1}{|r|}|f'|dx)^2 \le K^2 \int_{-1}^1|f|^2dx\int_{-1}^1\Big|\Big(\frac{1}{r}f'\Big)'\Big|^2dx \] is satisfied with some positive constant $K>0$ for a certain class of functions $f$ on $[-1,1]$ if the eigenfunctions of the problem \[ -y"=λ\, r(x)y,\quad y(-1)=y(1)=0 \] form a Riesz basis of the Hilbert space $L^2_{|r|}(-1,1)$. Here the weight $r\in L^1(-1,1)$ is assumed to satisfy $xr(x)>0$ a.e. on $[-1,1]$. We present two criteria in terms of Weyl-Titchmarsh $m$-functions for the Volkmer inequality to be valid. Using these res…
In [arXiv:0801.0172] we examined a family of periodic Sturm-Liouville problems with boundary and interior singularities which are highly non-self-adjoint but have only real eigenvalues. We now establish Schatten class properties of the associated resolvent operator.
We consider self-adjoint realizations of a second-order elliptic differential expression on ${\mathbb R}^n$ with singular interactions of $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-type supported on a compact closed smooth hypersurface in ${\mathbb R}^n$. In our main results we prove spectral asymptotics formulae with refined remainder estimates for the singular values of the resolvent difference between the standard self-adjoint realizations and the operators with a $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-interaction, respectively. Our technique makes use of general pseudodifferential methods, classical results on spectral asymptotics o…
We consider a Sturm-Liouville equation $\ell y:=-y'' + qy = λy$ on the intervals $(-a,0)$ and $(0,b)$ with $a,b>0$ and $q \in L^2(-a,b)$. We impose boundary conditions $y(-a)\cosα= y'(-a)\sinα$, $y(b)\cosβ= y'(b)\sinβ$, where $α\in [0,π)$ and $β\in (0,π]$, together with transmission conditions rationally-dependent on the eigenparameter via \begin{align*} -y(0^+)\left(λη-ξ-\sum\limits_{i=1}^{N} \frac{b_i^2}{λ-c_i}\right) &= y'(0^+) - y'(0^-),\\ y'(0^-)\left(λκ+ζ-\sum\limits_{j=1}^{M}\frac{a_j^2}{λ-d_j}\right) &= y(0^+) - y(0^-), \end{align*} with $b_i, a_j>0$ for $i=1,\dots,N,$ and $j=1,\dots,M…
Singular Green operators G appear typically as boundary correction terms in resolvents for elliptic boundary value problems on a domain Ω\subset R^n, and more generally they appear in the calculus of pseudodifferential boundary problems. In particular, the boundary term in a Krein resolvent formula is a singular Green operator. It is well-known in smooth cases that when G is of negative order -t on a bounded domain, its eigenvalues or s-numbers have the behavior (*) s_j(G) \sim c j^{-t/(n-1)} for j\to \infty, governed by the boundary dimension n-1. In some nonsmooth cases, upper estimates (**)…
We develop an analog of classical oscillation theory for Sturm-Liouville operators which, rather than measuring the spectrum of one single operator, measures the difference between the spectra of two different operators. This is done by replacing zeros of solutions of one operator by weighted zeros of Wronskians of solutions of two different operators. In particular, we show that a Sturm-type comparison theorem still holds in this situation and demonstrate how this can be used to investigate the finiteness of eigenvalues in essential spectral gaps. Furthermore, the connection with Krein's spec…
Let $A$ be a densely defined symmetric operator with equal deficiency indices in a Hilbert space. We introduce the notion of a Weyl function $M(z)$ of $A$ corresponding to an ordinary boundary triplet of the operator $A^*$ and then investigate its basic properties. In particular, a connection with Krein-Langer Q-functions and Krein's type formula for resolvents is discovered. Using this new connection, we show that the resolvent comparability of two proper extensions is equivalent to that of the corresponding boundary operators. Moreover, we show that the number of negative eigenvalues of a se…
We consider one-dimensional Schroedinger-type operators in a bounded interval with non-self-adjoint Robin-type boundary conditions. It is well known that such operators are generically conjugate to normal operators via a similarity transformation. Motivated by recent interests in quasi-Hermitian Hamiltonians in quantum mechanics, we study properties of the transformations in detail. We show that they can be expressed as the sum of the identity and an integral Hilbert-Schmidt operator. In the case of parity and time reversal boundary conditions, we establish closed integral-type formulae for th…
In this paper, we consider an unbounded selfadjoint operator $A$ and its selfadjoint perturbations in the same Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. As S.Albeverio and P. Kurosov (2000), we call a selfadjoint operator $A_{1}$ the singular perturbation of $A$ if $A_{1}$ and {A} have different domains $\mathcal{D}(A),\mathcal{D}(A_{1})$ but $A=A_{1}$ on $\mathcal{D}(A)\cap\mathcal{D}(A_{1})$. Assuming that $A$ has absolutely continuous spectrum and the difference of resolvents $R_{z}(A_{1}) -R_{z}(A)$ of $A_{1}$ and $A$ for non-real $z$ is a trace class operator we find the explicit expression for the sc…
In this paper the spectral properties of Dirac operators $A_η$ with electrostatic $δ$-shell interactions of constant strength $η$ supported on compact smooth surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are studied. Making use of boundary triple techniques a Krein type resolvent formula and a Birman-Schwinger principle are obtained. With the help of these tools some spectral, scattering, and asymptotic properties of $A_η$ are investigated. In particular, it turns out that the discrete spectrum of $A_η$ inside the gap of the essential spectrum is finite, the difference of the third powers of the resolvents of $A…
The principal aim in this paper is to employ a recently developed unified approach to the computation of traces of resolvents and $ζ$-functions to efficiently compute values of spectral $ζ$-functions at positive integers associated to regular (three-coefficient) self-adjoint Sturm--Liouville differential expressions $τ$. Depending on the underlying boundary conditions, we express the $ζ$-function values in terms of a fundamental system of solutions of $τy = z y$ and their expansions about the spectral point $z=0$. Furthermore, we give the full analytic continuation of the $ζ$-function through …
We systematically develop Weyl-Titchmarsh theory for singular differential operators on arbitrary intervals $(a,b) \subseteq \mathbb{R}$ associated with rather general differential expressions of the type \[ τf = \frac{1}{r} (- \big(p[f' + s f]\big)' + s p[f' + s f] + qf),] where the coefficients $p$, $q$, $r$, $s$ are real-valued and Lebesgue measurable on $(a,b)$, with $p\neq 0$, $r>0$ a.e.\ on $(a,b)$, and $p^{-1}$, $q$, $r$, $s \in L^1_{\text{loc}}((a,b); dx)$, and $f$ is supposed to satisfy [f \in AC_{\text{loc}}((a,b)), \; p[f' + s f] \in AC_{\text{loc}}((a,b)).] In particular, this setu…
In the present paper we investigate the set $Σ_J$ of all $J$-self-adjoint extensions of a symmetric operator $S$ with deficiency indices $<2,2>$ which commutes with a non-trivial fundamental symmetry $J$ of a Krein space $(\mathfrak{H}, [\cdot,\cdot])$, SJ=JS. Our aim is to describe different types of $J$-self-adjoint extensions of $S$. One of our main results is the equivalence between the presence of $J$-self-adjoint extensions of $S$ with empty resolvent set and the commutation of $S$ with a Clifford algebra ${\mathcal C}l_2(J,R)$, where $R$ is an additional fundamental symmetry with $JR=-R…
Based on the notion of the resolvent and on the Hilbert identities, this paper presents a number of classical results in the theory of differential operators and some of their applications to the theory of automorphic functions and number theory from a unified point of view. For instance, for the Sturm-Liouville operator there is a derivation of the Gelfand-Levitan trace formula, and for the one-dimensional Schroedinger operator a derivation of Faddeev's formula for the characteristic determinant and the Zakharov-Faddeev trace identities. Recent results on the spectral theory of a certain func…
We consider self-adjoint Dirac operators $\ham{D}=\ham{D}_0 + V(x)$, where $\ham{D}_0$ is the free three-dimensional Dirac operator and $V(x)$ is a smooth compactly supported Hermitian matrix. We define resonances of $\ham{D}$ as poles of the meromorphic continuation of its cut-off resolvent. An upper bound on the number of resonances in disks, an estimate on the scattering determinant and the Lifshits-Krein trace formula then leads to a global Poisson wave trace formula for resonances of $\ham{D}$.
