A special class of generalized Jacobi operators which are self-adjoint in Krein spaces is presented. A description of the resolvent set of such operators in terms of solutions of the corresponding recurrence relations is given. In particular, special attention is paid to the periodic generalized Jacobi operators. Finally, the spectral properties of generalized Jacobi operators are applied to prove convergence results for Padé approximants.
We show that the classical Hamburger moment problem can be included in the spectral theory of generalized indefinite strings. Namely, we introduce the class of Krein-Langer strings and show that there is a bijective correspondence between moment sequences and this class of generalized indefinite strings. This result can be viewed as a complement to the classical results of M. G. Krein on the connection between the Stieltjes moment problem and Krein-Stieltjes strings and I. S. Kac on the connection between the Hamburger moment problem and 2x2 canonical systems with Hamburger Hamiltonians.
We study generalized Robin boundary conditions, Robin-to-Dirichlet maps, and Krein-type resolvent formulas for Schrödinger operators on bounded Lipschitz domains in $\bbR^n$, $n\ge 2$. We also discuss the case of bounded $C^{1,r}$-domains, $(1/2)<r<1$.
We consider minimal non-negative Jacobi operator with $p\times p-$matrix entries. Using the technique of boundary triplets and the corresponding Weyl functions, we describe the Friedrichs and Krein extensions of the minimal Jacobi operator. Moreover, we parameterize the set of all non-negative self-adjoint extensions in terms of boundary conditions.
For a class of even dimensional conformally compact manifolds (X,g), we define a generalized Krein spectral function by applying a renormalized trace functional to the spectral measure of the Laplacian. We then show that this is the phase of the Kontsevich-Vishik determinant det S(s) of the scattering operator S(s) of (the Laplacian of) g and we analyze the divisors of det(S(s)). As an application for convex co-compact hyperbolic quotients, we obtain a functional equation for Selberg's Zeta function Z(s), we express the determinant of the GJMS conformal Laplacians of the conformal infinity of …
We study Robin-to-Robin maps, and Krein-type resolvent formulas for Schrödinger operators on bounded Lipschitz domains in $\bbR^n$, $n\ge 2$, with generalized Robin boundary conditions.
We investigate the instability index of the spectral problem $$ -c^2y'' + b^2y + V(x)y = -\mathrm{i} z y' $$ on the line $\mathbb{R}$, where $V\in L^1_{\rm loc}(\mathbb{R})$ is real valued and $b,c>0$ are constants. This problem arises in the study of stability of solitons for certain nonlinear equations (e.g., the short pulse equation and the generalized Bullough-Dodd equation). We show how to apply the standard approach in the situation under consideration and as a result we provide a formula for the instability index in terms of certain spectral characteristics of the 1-D Schrödinger operat…
We provide a very general result that identifies the essential spectrum of broad classes of operators as exactly equal to the closure of the union of the spectra of suitable limits at infinity. Included is a new result on the essential spectra when potentials are asymptotic to isospectral tori. We also recover with a unified framework the HVZ theorem and Krein's results on orthogonal polynomials with finite essential spectra.
We revisit the Krein-von Neumann extension in the case where the underlying symmetric operator is strictly positive and apply this to derive the explicit form of the Krein-von Neumann extension for singular, general (i.e., three-coefficient) Sturm-Liouville operators on arbitrary intervals. In particular, the boundary conditions for the Krein-von Neumann extension of the strictly positive minimal Sturm-Liouville operator are explicitly expressed in terms of generalized boundary values adapted to the (possible) singularity structure of the coefficients near an interval endpoint.
We study the limiting behavior of the Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalue counting function of generalized second order differential operators $\frac{d}{d μ} \frac{d}{d x}$, where $μ$ is a finite atomless Borel measure on some compact interval $[a,b]$. Therefore, we firstly recall the results of the spectral asymptotics for these operators received so far. Afterwards, we make a proposition about the convergence behavior for so called random $V$-variable Cantor measures.
We study asymptotics of generalized eigenvectors associated with Jacobi matrices. Under weak conditions on the coefficients we identify when the matrices are self-adjoint and show that they satisfy strong non-subordinacy condition.
We study the limit behavior of the Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalue counting function of generalized second order differential operators $\frac{d}{d μ} \frac{d}{d x}$, where $μ$ is a finite atomless Borel measure on some compact interval $[a,b]$. We firstly recall the results of the spectral asymptotics for these operators received so far. Afterwards, we give the spectral asymptotics for so called random recursive Cantor measures. Finally, we compare the results for random recursive and random homogeneous Cantor measures.
Some inverse problems for semi-infinite periodic generalized Jacobi matrices are considered. In particular, a generalization of the Abel criterion is presented. The approach is based on the fact that the solvability of the Pell-Abel equation is equivalent to the existence of a certainly normalized $J$-unitary $2\times 2$-matrix polynomial (the monodromy matrix).
We investigate trace formulas for Jacobi operators which are trace class perturbations of quasi-periodic finite-gap operators using Krein's spectral shift theory. In particular we establish the conserved quantities for the solutions of the Toda hierarchy in this class.
We consider the Hamburger, Stieltjes and Hausdorff moment problems, that are problems of the construction of a Borel measure supported on a real line, on a half-line or on an interval $(0,1)$, from a prescribed set of moments. We propose a unified approach to these three problems based on using the auxiliary dynamical system with the discrete time associated with a semi-infinite Jacobi matrix. It is show that the set of moments determines the inverse dynamic data for such a system. Using the ideas of the Boundary Control method for every $N\in \mathbb{N}$ we can recover the spectral measure of…
We use nowdays classical theory of generalized moment problems by Krein-Nudelman [1977] to define a special class of stochastic Gaussian processes. The class contains, of course, stationary Gaussian processes. We obtain a spectral representation for the processes from this class and we solve the corresponding prediction problem. The orthogonal rational functions on the unit circle lead to a class of Gaussian processes providing an example for the above construction.
In this paper, we start by showing that the intertwining relationship between two minimal Markov semigroups acting on Hilbert spaces implies that any recurrent extensions, in the sense of Itô, of these semigroups satisfy the same intertwining identity. Under mild additional assumptions on the intertwining operator, we prove that the converse also holds. This connection, which relies on the representation of excursion quantities as developed by Fitzsimmons and Getoor, enables us to give an interesting probabilistic interpretation of intertwining relationships between Markov semigroups via excur…
We consider continuous cocycles arising from CMV and Jacobi matrices. Assuming the Verblunsky and Jacobi coefficients arise from generalized skew-shifts, we prove that uniform hyperbolicity of the associated cocycles is $C^0$-dense. This implies that the associated CMV and Jacobi matrices have Cantor spectrum for a generic continuous sampling map.
Prüfer variables are a standard tool in spectral theory, developed originally for perturbations of the free Schrödinger operator. They were generalized by Kiselev, Remling, and Simon to perturbations of an arbitrary Schrödinger operator. We adapt these generalized Prufer variables to the setting of Jacobi and Szegő recursions. We present an application to random $L^2$ perturbations of Jacobi and CMV matrices, and an application to decaying oscillatory perturbations of periodic Jacobi and CMV matrices.
This work is in a stream initiated by a paper of Killip and Simon [Ann. of Math. (2003)]. Using methods of Functional Analysis and the classical Szegö Theorem we prove sum rule identities in a very general form. Then, we apply the result to obtain new asymptotics for orthonormal polynomials.
We prove bounds of the form $\sum_{e\in I\capσ_\di (H)} \dist (e,σ_\e (H))^{1/2} \leq L^1$-norm of a perturbation, where $I$ is a gap. Included are gaps in continuum one-dimensional periodic Schrödinger operators and finite gap Jacobi matrices where we get a generalized Nevai conjecture about an $L^1$ condition implying a Szegő condition. One key is a general new form of the Birman--Schwinger bound in gaps.
Bounds on the exponential decay of generalized eigenfunctions of bounded and unbounded selfadjoint Jacobi matrices are established. Two cases are considered separately: (i) the case in which the spectral parameter lies in a general gap of the spectrum of the Jacobi matrix and (ii) the case of a lower semi-bounded Jacobi matrix with values of the spectral parameter below the spectrum. It is demonstrated by examples that both results are sharp. We apply these results to obtain a "many barriers-type" criterion for the existence of square-summable generalized eigenfunctions of an unbounded Jacobi …
