For a smooth function on a smooth manifold of a suitable class, the space of all connected components of preimages is the graph and called the {\it Reeb graph}. Reeb graphs are fundamental tools in the algebraic and differential topological theory of Morse functions and more general functions which are not so wild. In this paper, we study whether we can construct a smooth function with good geometric properties inducing a given graph as the Reeb graph. This problem has been essentially launched by Sharko in 2000s and various answers have been given by Masumoto, Michalak, Saeki, and so on. Recently the author set a new explicit problem and gave an answer. In the studies before the result of the author, considered functions are smooth functions on closed surfaces or Morse functions such that preimages of regular values are disjoint unions of standard spheres. On the other hand, the author constructed a smooth function on a suitable $3$-dimensional closed, connected and orientable manifold inducing the Reeb graph isomorphic to the given graph such that preimages of regular values are arbitrary closed surfaces. Based on this result and method of the author, with several new ideas, we will consider smooth functions on surfaces and manifolds which may be non-closed and give answers to the problem.
We give a new answer to so-called realization problems of graphs as Reeb graphs of smooth functions with prescribed preimages of regular values having nice structures. We present a best possible answer for functions on 3-dimensional closed manifolds. The Reeb space of a smooth function is the quotient space of the manifold of the domain induced from the following equivalence relation; two points in the manifold are equivalent if and only if they are points of a same connected component of some preimage. They are in considerable cases graphs (Reeb graphs). Reeb spaces with preimages represent t…
The Reeb graph of a function on a smooth manifold is the graph obtained as the space of all connected components of level sets such that the set of all vertices coincides with the set of all connected components of level sets including singular points. Reeb graphs are fundamental and important in the algebraic and differential topological theory of Morse functions and their generalizations. In this paper, as a related fundamental and important study, for given graphs, we construct certain smooth functions inducing the graphs as the Reeb graphs. Such works have been demonstrated by Masumoto, Mi…
A Reeb space is defined as the space of all the connected components of inverse images of a smooth map, which is a fundamental tool in studying smooth manifolds using generic smooth maps whose codimensions are not positive such as Morse functions, their higher dimensional versions including fold maps and general stable maps. A special generic map is a fold map and a generalization of Morse functions with just 2 singular points on homotopy spheres and the Reeb space is a compact manifold whose dimension is equal to that of the target manifold and which can be immersed into the target manifold. …
The Reeb space of a continuous function is the space of connected components of the level sets. In this paper we first prove that the Reeb space of a smooth function on a closed manifold with finitely many critical values has the structure of a finite graph without loops. We also show that an arbitrary finite graph without loops can be realized as the Reeb space of a certain smooth function on a closed manifold with finitely many critical values, where the corresponding level sets can also be preassigned. Finally, we show that a continuous map of a smooth closed connected manifold to a finite …
Smooth functions which are Morse on preimages of values not being local extrema and constructing natural functions of the class on connected sums of manifolds admitting these functions
Let M denote a compact, orientable, 3-dimensional manifold and let a denote a contact 1-form on M; thus the wedge product of a with da is nowhere zero. This article explains how the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology groups as defined for any given Spin-C structure on M give closed, integral curves of the vector field that generates the kernel of da.
The Reeb space of a function or a map on a manifold is defined as the space of all connected components of preimages and represents the manifold compactly. In fact, Reeb spaces are fundamental and useful tools in geometric theory of so-called Morse functions and more general maps which are sufficiently tame. Can we construct an explicit good function inducing a given graph as the Reeb space (Reeb graph)? These problems were launched by Sharko in 2000s and have been explicitly solved by several researchers. As related pioneering studies, the author also found and solved problems adding constrai…
We study the group of leafwise holomorphic smooth automorphisms of Reeb components of leafwise complex foliation which are obtained by a certain Hopf construction. In particular, in the case where the boundary holonomy is infinitely tangent to the identity, we determine the structure of the group of leafwise holomorphic automorphisms.
Classes of branched surfaces extend the classes of surfaces or 2-dimensional manifolds satisfying suitable properties and defined in various manners. Reeb spaces of smooth maps of suitable classes into surfaces whose codimensions are negative are regarded as branched surfaces. They are the spaces of all connected components of preimages and natural quotient spaces of the manifolds of the domains. They are defined for general smooth maps and important topological objects in differential topology. They also play important roles in applied or applications of mathematics such as projections in dat…
Graph manifolds form important classes of $3$-dimensional closed and orientable manifolds. For example, {\it Seifert} manifolds are graph manifolds where hyperbolic manifolds are not. In applying singularity theory of differentiable maps to understanding global topologies of manifolds, graph manifolds have been shown to be characterized as ones admitting so-called simple fold maps into the plane of explicit classes by Saeki and the author. The present paper presents several related new results. Fold maps are higher dimensional variants of Morse functions and simple ones form simple classes, ge…
Let $P, Q$ be Heegaard surfaces of a closed orientable 3-manifold. In this paper, we introduce a method for giving an upper bound of Hempel distance of $P$ by using the Reeb graph derived from a certain horizontal arc in the ambient space $[0,1]\times[0,1]$ of the Rubinstein-Scharlemann graphic derived from $P$ and $Q$. This is a refinement of a part of Johnson's arguments used for determining stable genera required for flipping high distance Heegaard splittings.
We use the equivalence between embedded contact homology and Seiberg-Witten Floer homology to obtain the following improvements on the Weinstein conjecture. Let Y be a closed oriented connected 3-manifold with a stable Hamiltonian structure, and let R denote the associated Reeb vector field on Y. We prove that if Y is not a T^2-bundle over S^1, then R has a closed orbit. Along the way we prove that if Y is a closed oriented connected 3-manifold with a contact form such that all Reeb orbits are nondegenerate and elliptic, then Y is a lens space. Related arguments show that if Y is a closed orie…
We investigate the problem of the realization of a given graph as the Reeb graph $\mathcal{R}(f)$ of a smooth function $f\colon M\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ with finitely many critical points, where $M$ is a closed manifold. We show that for any $n\geq2$ and any graph $Γ$ admitting the so called good orientation there exist an $n$-manifold $M$ and a Morse function $f\colon M\rightarrow \mathbb{R} $ such that its Reeb graph $\mathcal{R}(f)$ is isomorphic to $Γ$, extending previous results of Sharko and Masumoto-Saeki. We prove that Reeb graphs of simple Morse functions maximize the number of cycles…
For a connected locally path-connected topological space $X$ and a continuous function $f$ on it such that its Reeb graph $R_f$ is a finite topological graph, we show that the cycle rank of $R_f$, i.e., the first Betti number $b_1(R_f)$, in computational geometry called \emph{number of loops}, is bounded from above by the co-rank of the fundamental group $π_1(X)$, the condition of local path-connectedness being important since generally $b_1(R_f)$ can even exceed $b_1(X)$. We give some practical methods for calculating the co-rank of $π_1(X)$ and a closely related value, the isotropy index. We…
Let $f:M\to \mathbb{R}$ be a Morse function on a connected compact surface $M$, and $\mathcal{S}(f)$ and $\mathcal{O}(f)$ be respectively the stabilizer and the orbit of $f$ with respect to the right action of the group of diffeomorphisms $\mathcal{D}(M)$. In a series of papers the first author described the homotopy types of connected components of $\mathcal{S}(f)$ and $\mathcal{O}(f)$ for the cases when $M$ is either a $2$-disk or a cylinder or $χ(M)<0$. Moreover, in two recent papers the authors considered special classes of smooth functions on $2$-torus $T^2$ and shown that the computation…
The Reeb graph $\mathcal{R}(f) $ is one of the fundamental invariants of a smooth function $f\colon M\to \mathbb{R} $ with isolated critical points. It is defined as the quotient space $M/_{\!\sim}$ of the closed manifold $M$ by a relation that depends on $f$. Here we construct a $1$-dimensional complex $Γ(f)$ embedded into $M$ which is homotopy equivalent to $\mathcal{R}(f)$. As a consequence we show that for every function $f$ on a manifold with finite fundamental group, the Reeb graph of $f$ is a tree. If $π_1(M)$ is an abelian group, or more general, a discrete amenable group, then $\mathc…
The Reeb space of a smooth map whose codimension is minus is the space defined as the space of all connected components of inverse images. For generic maps such as Morse functions and their higher dimensional versions, they are polyhedra whose dimensions are equal to those of the target manifolds and which have simplicial structures compatible with (the canonical) simplicial structures of the source and the target manifolds, and in considerable cases they inherit fundamental and important invariants of source manifolds. In fact, Reeb spaces are fundamentall tools in the algebraic and different…
We show, as our main theorem, that if a Lipschitz map from a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ to a connected compact Riemannian manifold $N$, where $\dim M \geq \dim N$, has no singular points on $M$ in the sense of F.H. Clarke, then the map admits a smooth approximation via Ehresmann fibrations. We also show the Reeb sphere theorem for Lipschitz functions, i.e., if a closed Riemannian manifold admits a Lipschitz function with exactly two singular points in the sense of Clarke, then the manifold is homeomorphic to the sphere.
We prove that in dimension 3 every nondegenerate contact form is carried by a broken book decomposition. As an application we get that if M is a closed irreducible oriented 3-manifold that is not a graph manifold, for example a hyperbolic manifold, then every nondegenerate Reeb vector field on M has positive topological entropy. Moreover, we obtain that on a closed 3-manifold, every nondegenerate Reeb vector field has either two or infinitely many periodic orbits, and two periodic orbits are possible only on the sphere or on a lens space.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a closed connected co-orientable contact $3$-manifold $(M,ξ)$ to be a standard lens space based on assumptions on the Reeb flow associated to a defining contact form. Our methods also provide rational global surfaces of section for nondegenerate Reeb flows on $(L(p,q),ξ_{\rm std})$ with prescribed binding orbits.
Let $M$ be a smooth manifold and let $\F$ be a codimension one, $C^\infty$ foliation on $M$, with isolated singularities of Morse type. The study and classification of pairs $(M,\F)$ is a challenging (and difficult) problem. In this setting, a classical result due to Reeb \cite{Reeb} states that a manifold admitting a foliation with exactly two center-type singularities is a sphere. In particular this is true if the foliation is given by a function. Along these lines a result due to Eells and Kuiper \cite{Ku-Ee} classify manifolds having a real-valued function admitting exactly three non-degen…

Let $f:T^2\to\mathbb{R}$ be a Morse function on $2$-torus $T^2$ such that its Kronrod-Reeb graph $Γ(f)$ has exactly one cycle, i.e. it is homotopy equivalent to $S^1$. Under some additional conditions we describe a homotopy type of the orbit of $f$ with respect to the action of the group of diffeomorphism of $T^2$. This result holds for a larger class of smooth functions $f:T^2\to\mathbb{R}$ having the following property: for every critical point $z$ of $f$ the germ of $f$ at $z$ is smoothly equivalent to a homogeneous polynomial $\mathbb{R}^2\to\mathbb{R}$ without multiple factors.
Let $f:T^2\to \mathbb{R}$ be Morse function on $2$-torus $T^2,$ and $\mathcal{O}(f)$ be the orbit of $f$ with respect to the right action of the group of diffeomorphisms $\mathcal{D}(T^2)$ on $C^{\infty}(T^2)$. Let also $\mathcal{O}_f(f,X)$ be a connected component of $\mathcal{O}(f,X)$ which contains $f.$ In the case when Kronrod-Reeb graph of $f$ is a tree we obtain the full description of $π_1\mathcal{O}_f(f).$ This result also holds for more general class of smooth functions $f:T^2\to \mathbb{R}$ which have the following property: for each critical point $z$ of $f$ the germ $f$ of $z$ is s…
Let $M$ be a connected orientable compact surface, $f:M\to\mathbb{R}$ be a Morse function, and $\mathcal{D}_{\mathrm{id}}(M)$ be the group of difeomorphisms of $M$ isotopic to the identity. Denote by $\mathcal{S}'(f)=\{f\circ h = f\mid h\in\mathcal{D}_{\mathrm{id}}(M)\}$ the subgroup of $\mathcal{D}_{\mathrm{id}}(M)$ consisting of difeomorphisms "preserving" $f$, i.e. the stabilizer of $f$ with respect to the right action of $\mathcal{D}_{\mathrm{id}}(M)$ on the space $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}(M,\mathbb{R})$ of smooth functions on $M$. Let also $\mathbf{G}(f)$ be the group of automorphisms of the …
