Let $f:T^2\to\mathbb{R}$ be a Morse function on $2$-torus $T^2$ such that its Kronrod-Reeb graph $Γ(f)$ has exactly one cycle, i.e. it is homotopy equivalent to $S^1$. Under some additional conditions we describe a homotopy type of the orbit of $f$ with respect to the action of the group of diffeomorphism of $T^2$.
This result holds for a larger class of smooth functions $f:T^2\to\mathbb{R}$ having the following property: for every critical point $z$ of $f$ the germ of $f$ at $z$ is smoothly equivalent to a homogeneous polynomial $\mathbb{R}^2\to\mathbb{R}$ without multiple factors.
The structure of the Khovanov homology of $(n,m)$ torus links has been extensively studied. In particular, Marko Stosic proved that the homology groups stabilize as $m\rightarrow\infty$. We show that the Khovanov homotopy types of $(n,m)$ torus links, as constructed by Robert Lipshitz and Sucharit Sarkar, also become stably homotopy equivalent as $m\rightarrow\infty$. We provide an explicit bound on values of $m$ beyond which the stabilization begins. As an application, we give new examples of torus links with non-trivial $Sq^2$ action.
Let $M$ be a topological space that admits a free involution $τ$, and let $N$ be a topological space. A homotopy class $β\in [ M,N ]$ is said to have {\it the Borsuk-Ulam property with respect to $τ$} if for every representative map $f: M \to N$ of $β$, there exists a point $x \in M$ such that $f(τ(x))= f(x)$. In this paper, we determine the homotopy classes of maps from the $2$-torus $T^2$ to the Klein bottle $K^2$ that possess the Borsuk-Ulam property with respect to a free involution $τ_1$ of $T^2$ for which the orbit space is $T^2$. Our results are given in terms of a certain family of hom…

We recursively determine the homotopy type of the space of any irreducible framed link in the 3-sphere, modulo rotations. This leads us to the homotopy type of the space of any knot in the solid torus, thus answering a question posed by Arnold. We similarly study spaces of unframed links in the 3-sphere, modulo rotations, and spaces of knots in the thickened torus. The subgroup of meridional rotations splits as a direct factor of the fundamental group of the space of any framed link except the unknot. Its generators can be viewed as generalizations of the Gramain loop in the space of long knot…
In this paper we classify maps from a torus phase space $X$ to $\mathcal{H}_n^*$, the space of $n \times n$, non-singular hermitian operators up to equivariant homotopy. The equivariance is with respect to a time-reversal involution on $X$ and an involution on $\mathcal{H}_n^*$ defining a certain symmetry class. Furthermore we study certain controlled degenerations of such maps and describe how one can implement jumps from one homotopy class to another while allowing only "small" degenerations.
In the paper of Montgomery, D. and Yang, C.T. [5], they discuss the de-suspension of smooth free actions of S1 on (2n+1)-dimensional homotopy spheres. In this paper we discuss the de-suspension of smooth free actions of S3 on (4n + 3)-dimensional homotopy spheres.
In this work, it is shown that a simply-connected, rationally-elliptic torus orbifold is equivariantly rationally homotopy equivalent to the quotient of a product of spheres by an almost-free, linear torus action, where this torus has rank equal to the number of odd-dimensional spherical factors in the product. As an application, simply-connected, rationally-elliptic manifolds admitting slice-maximal torus actions are classified up to equivariant rational homotopy. The case where the rational-ellipticity hypothesis is replaced by non-negative curvature is also discussed, and the Bott Conjectur…
Let p be an odd regular prime, and assume that the Lichtenbaum-Quillen conjecture holds for K(Z[1/p]) at p. Then the p-primary homotopy type of the smooth Whitehead spectrum Wh(*) is described. A suspended copy of the cokernel-of-J spectrum splits off, and the torsion homotopy of the remainder equals the torsion homotopy of the fiber of the restricted S^1-transfer map t: SigmaCP^infty--> S. The homotopy groups of Wh(*) are determined in a range of degrees, and the cohomology of Wh(*) is expressed as an A-module in all degrees, up to an extension. These results have geometric topological interp…
In 2006 Masuda and Suh asked if two compact non-singular toric varieties having isomorphic cohomology rings are homeomorphic. In the first part of this paper we discuss this question for topological generalizations of toric varieties, so-called torus manifolds. For example we show that there are homotopy equivalent torus manifolds which are not homeomorphic. Moreover, we characterize those groups which appear as the fundamental groups of locally standard torus manifolds. In the second part we give a classification of quasitoric manifolds and certain six-dimensional torus manifolds up to equiva…
We extend Lipshitz-Sarkar's definition of a stable homotopy type associated to a link L whose cohomology recovers the Khovanov cohomology of L. Given an assignment c (called a coloring) of positive integer to each component of a link L, we define a stable homotopy type X_col(L_c) whose cohomology recovers the c-colored Khovanov cohomology of L. This goes via Rozansky's definition of a categorified Jones-Wenzl projector P_n as an infinite torus braid on n strands. We then observe that Cooper-Krushkal's explicit definition of P_2 also gives rise to stable homotopy types of colored links (using t…
A toric arrangement is a finite set of hypersurfaces in a complex torus, every hypersurface being the kernel of a character. In the present paper we build a CW-complex homotopy equivalent to the arrangement complement, with a combinatorial description similar to that of the well-known Salvetti complex. If the toric arrangement is defined by a Weyl group we also provide an algebraic description, very handy for cohomology computations. In the last part we give a description in terms of tableaux for a toric arrangement appearing in robotics.
Let $f:T^2\to \mathbb{R}$ be Morse function on $2$-torus $T^2,$ and $\mathcal{O}(f)$ be the orbit of $f$ with respect to the right action of the group of diffeomorphisms $\mathcal{D}(T^2)$ on $C^{\infty}(T^2)$. Let also $\mathcal{O}_f(f,X)$ be a connected component of $\mathcal{O}(f,X)$ which contains $f.$ In the case when Kronrod-Reeb graph of $f$ is a tree we obtain the full description of $π_1\mathcal{O}_f(f).$ This result also holds for more general class of smooth functions $f:T^2\to \mathbb{R}$ which have the following property: for each critical point $z$ of $f$ the germ $f$ of $z$ is s…
We compute the homotopy type of the space of proper d-dimensional submanifolds of ${\mathbb R}^n$ with a smooth version of the Fell topology. Our methods allow us to compute the homotopy type of the space of submanifolds with summable labels too, and to give a new proof of the Galatius--Randal-Williams theorem on the homotopy type of their space of submanifolds
We show that all homotopy $\mathbb{C}P^n$s, smooth closed manifolds with the oriented homotopy type of $\mathbb{C}P^n$, admit almost complex structures for $3 \leq n \leq 6$, and classify these structures by their Chern classes. Our methods provide a new proof of a result of Libgober and Wood on the classification of almost complex structures on homotopy $\mathbb{C}P^4$s.
We show that if $M$ and $N$ have the same homotopy type of simply connected closed smooth $m$-manifolds such that the integral and mod-$2$ cohomologies of $M$ vanish in odd degrees, then their homotopy inertia groups are equal. Let $M^{2n}$ be a closed $(n-1)$-connected $2n$-dimensional smooth manifold. We show that, for $n=4$, the homotopy inertia group of $M^{2n}$ is trivial and if $n=8$ and $H^n(M^{2n};\mathbb{Z})\cong \mathbb{Z}$, the homotopy inertia group of $M^{2n}$ is also trivial. We further compute the group $\mathcal{C}(M^{2n})$ of concordance classes of smoothings of $M^{2n}$ for $…
Simplicial presheaves on cartesian spaces provide a general notion of smooth spaces. There is a corresponding smooth version of the singular complex functor, which maps smooth spaces to simplicial sets. We consider the localisation of the (projective or injective) model category of smooth spaces at the morphisms which become weak equivalences under the singular complex functor. We prove that this localisation agrees with a motivic-style $\mathbb{R}$-localisation of the model category of smooth spaces. Further, we exhibit the singular complex functor for smooth spaces as one of several Quillen …
We classify, up to diffeomorphism, all closed smooth manifolds homeomorphic to the complex projective $n$-space $\mathbb{C}\textbf{P}^n$, where $n=3$ and $4$. Let $M^{2n}$ be a closed smooth $2n$-manifold homotopy equivalent to $\mathbb{C}\textbf{P}^n$. We show that, up to diffeomorphism, $M^{6}$ has a unique differentiable structure and $M^{8}$ has at most two distinct differentiable structures. We also show that, up to concordance, there exist at least two distinct differentiable structures on a finite sheeted cover $N^{2n}$ of $\mathbb{C}\textbf{P}^n$ for $n=4, 7$ or $8$ and six distinct di…
We show that conically smooth stratified spaces embed fully faithfully into $\infty$-categories. This articulates a stratified generalization of the homotopy hypothesis proposed by Grothendieck. As such, each $\infty$-category defines a stack on conically smooth stratified spaces, and we identify the descent conditions it satisfies. These include $\mathbb{R}^1$-invariance and descent for open covers and blow-ups, analogous to sheaves for the h-topology in $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory. In this way, we identify $\infty$-categories as striation sheaves, which are those sheaves on conically smoo…
We consider the space $\X$ of Anosov diffeomorphisms homotopic to a fixed automorphism $L$ of an infranilmanifold $M$. We show that if $M$ is the 2-torus $\mathbb T^2$ then $\X$ is homotopy equivalent to $\mathbb T^2$. In contrast, if dimension of $M$ is large enough, we show that $\X$ is rich in homotopy and has infinitely many connected components.
This paper deals with certain results on the number of smooth structures on quaternionic projective spaces, obtained through the computation of inertia group and its analogues, which in turn are computed using techniques from stable homotopy theory. We show that the concordance inertia group is trivial in dimension 20, but there are many examples in high dimensions where the concordance inertia group is non-trivial. We extend these to computations of concordance classes of smooth structures. These have applications to 3-sphere actions on homotopy spheres and tangential homotopy structures.
Let $B$ be a Möbius band and $f:B \to \mathbb{R}$ be a Morse map taking a constant value on $\partial B$, and $\mathcal{S}(f,\partial B)$ be the group of diffeomorphisms $h$ of $B$ fixed on $\partial B$ and preserving $f$ in the sense that $f\circ h = f$. Under certain assumptions on $f$ we compute the group $π_0\mathcal{S}(f,\partial B)$ of isotopy classes of such diffeomorphisms. In fact, those computations hold for functions $f:B\to\mathbb{R}$ whose germs at critical points are smoothly equivalent to homogeneous polynomials $\mathbb{R}^2\to\mathbb{R}$ without multiple factors. Together with…
We associate a root system to a finite set in a free abelian group and prove that its irreducible subsystem is of type A, B or D. We apply this general result to a torus manifold, where a torus manifold is a $2n$-dimensional connected closed smooth manifold with a smooth effective action of an $n$-dimensional compact torus having a fixed point, and show that if the torus action extends to a smooth action of a connected compact Lie group $G$, then a simple factor of the Lie algebra of $G$ is of type A, B or D. This gives an alternative proof to Wiemeler's theorem. We also discuss a similar prob…
We will prove the relative homotopy principle for smooth maps with singularities of a given {\cal K}-invariant class with a mild condition. We next study a filtration of the group of homotopy self-equivalences of a given manifold P by considering singularities of non-negative {\cal K}-codimensions.
Let N and P be smooth manifolds of dimensions n and p (n \geq p \geq 2) respectively. Let Ω(N,P) denote an open subspace of J^{infty}(N,P) which consists of all regular jets and jets with prescribed singularities of types A_{i}, D_{j} and E_{k}. An Ω-regular map f:N \to P refers to a smooth map having only singularities in Ω(N,P) and satisfy the transversality condition. We will prove the homotopy principle in the existence level for Ω-regular maps.
A homotopy 4-ball is a smooth 4-manifold with boundary $S^3$ that is homotopy-equivalent to the standard $B^4$. The smooth 4-dimensional Schoenflies problem asks whether every homotopy 4-ball in $S^4$ (or equivalently $\mathbb{C}^2$) is standard. It is well-known that if a homotopy 4-ball embeds as a compact, pseudoconvex domain in a Stein surface, then it must be standard. In this paper, we describe a compelling reimbedding construction for homotopy 4-balls in $\mathbb{C}^2$. In particular, given a homotopy 4-ball in $\mathbb{C}^2$, we construct a diffeomorphic domain that is the union of thr…
In this paper we give an algebraic description of fundamental groups of orbits of circle-valued smooth functions from some subspace of the space of smooth functions with isolated singularities on $2$-torus $T^2$ with respect to the action of the group of diffeomorphisms of $T^2$.
We discuss links in thickened surfaces. We define the Khovanov-Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type and the Steenrod square for the homotopical Khovanov homology of links in thickened surfaces with genus$>1$. A surface means a closed oriented surface unless otherwise stated. Of course, a surface may or may not be the sphere. A thickened surface means a product manifold of a surface and the interval. A link in a thickened surface (respectively, a 3-manifold) means a submanifold of a thickened surface (respectively, a 3-manifold) which is diffeomorphic to a disjoint collection of circles. Our Kh…
We investigate the disparity between smooth and topological almost concordance of knots in general 3-manifolds Y. Almost concordance is defined by considering knots in Y modulo concordance in Yx[0,1] and the action of the concordance group of knots in the 3-sphere that ties in local knots. We prove that the trivial free homotopy class in every 3-manifold other than the 3-sphere contains an infinite family of knots, all topologically concordant, but not smoothly almost concordant to one another. Then, in every lens space and for every free homotopy class, we find a pair of topologically concord…
Let $M^{2n}$ be a closed smooth manifold homotopy equivalent to the complex projective space $\mathbb{C}P(n)$. The purpose of this paper is to show that when $n$ is even, the difference of the first Pontrjagin classes between $M^{2n}$ and $\mathbb{C}P(n)$ is divisible by 16.
We show that the group of smooth homotopy $7$-spheres acts freely on the set of smooth manifold structures on a topological manifold $M$ which is homotopy equivalent to the real projective $7$-space. We classify, up to diffeomorphism, all closed manifolds homeomorphic to the real projective $7$-space. We also show that $M$ has, up to diffeomorphism, exactly $28$ distinct differentiable structures with the same underlying PL structure of $M$ and $56$ distinct differentiable structures with the same underlying topological structure of $M$.
We show that the hyperbolization of polyhedra pulls back regular neighborhoods of PL submanifolds. Applying this to the Riemannian version of the hyperbolization due to Ontaneda gives open complete manifolds of pinched negative curvature that are homotopy equivalent to closed smooth manifolds but contain no smooth spines. We also find open complete negatively pinched manifolds that are homotopy equivalent to closed non-smoothable manifolds.
