Let M denote a compact, orientable, 3-dimensional manifold and let a denote a contact 1-form on M; thus the wedge product of a with da is nowhere zero. This article explains how the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology groups as defined for any given Spin-C structure on M give closed, integral curves of the vector field that generates the kernel of da.
The goal of this note is to describe some constructions of Weinstein manifolds with chaotic Reeb dynamics, and to explain how this property can sometimes be detected directly from the skeleton.
Let M denote a compact, oriented 3-manifold and let a denote a contact 1-form on M. This article proves that the vector field that generates the kernel of the 2-form da has at least one closed, integral curve.
We use the equivalence between embedded contact homology and Seiberg-Witten Floer homology to obtain the following improvements on the Weinstein conjecture. Let Y be a closed oriented connected 3-manifold with a stable Hamiltonian structure, and let R denote the associated Reeb vector field on Y. We prove that if Y is not a T^2-bundle over S^1, then R has a closed orbit. Along the way we prove that if Y is a closed oriented connected 3-manifold with a contact form such that all Reeb orbits are nondegenerate and elliptic, then Y is a lens space. Related arguments show that if Y is a closed orie…
We study holomorphic spheres in certain symplectic cobordisms and derive information about periodic Reeb orbits in the concave end of these cobordisms from the non-compactness of the relevant moduli spaces. We use this to confirm the strong Weinstein conjecture (predicting the existence of null-homologous Reeb links) for various higher-dimensional contact manifolds, including contact type hypersurfaces in subcritical Stein manifolds and in some cotangent bundles. The quantitative character of this result leads to the definition of a symplectic capacity.
Extending work of Chen, we prove the Weinstein conjecture in dimension three for strongly fillable contact structures with either non-vanishing first Chern class or with strong and exact filling having non-trivial canonical bundle. This implies the Weinstein conjecture for certain Stein fillable contact structures obtained by the Eliashberg-Gompf construction. For example we prove the Weinstein conjecture for the Brieskorn homology spheres $Σ(2,3,6n-1)$, $n\geq2$, oriented as the boundary of the corresponding Milnor fibre. Furthermore, for tight contact structures on odd lens spaces, non-contra…
These are notes based on a mini-course at the conference RIEMain in Contact, held in Cagliari, Sardinia, in June 2018. The main theme is the connection between Reeb dynamics and topology. Topics discussed include traps for Reeb flows, plugs for Hamiltonian flows, the Weinstein conjecture, Reeb flows with finite numbers of periodic orbits, and global surfaces of section for Reeb flows. The emphasis is on methods of construction, e.g. contact cuts and lifting group actions in Boothby-Wang bundles, that might be useful for other applications in contact topology.
Let M be a smooth closed manifold and T*M its cotangent bundle endowed with the usual symplectic structure. A hypersurface S in T*M is said to be fiberwise starshaped if for each point q in M the intersection of S with the fiber at q is starshaped with respect to the origin. In this thesis we give lower bounds of the growth rate of the number of closed Reeb orbits on a fiberwise starshaped hypersurface in terms of the topology of the free loop space of M. We distinguish the two cases that the fundamental group of the base space M has an exponential growth of conjugacy classes or not. If the ba…
In this short note we observe that the boundary of a properly embedded compact exact Lagrangian sub-manifolds in a subcritical Weinstein domain $X$ necessarily admits Reeb chords. The existence of this Reeb chords either follows from an obstruction to the deformation of the boundary to a cylinder over a Legendrian sub-manifold or from the fact that the wrapped Floer homology of the Lagrangian vanishes once this boundary have been "collared".
We show the existence of a contractible periodic Reeb orbit for any contact structure supported by an open book whose binding can be realised as a hypersurface of restricted contact type in a subcritical Stein manifold. A key ingredient in the proof is a higher-dimensional version of Eliashberg's theorem about symplectic cobordisms from a contact manifold to a symplectic fibration.
Helmut Hofer introduced in '93 a novel technique based on holomorphic curves to prove the Weinstein conjecture. Among the cases where these methods apply are all contact 3--manifolds $(M,ξ)$ with $π_2(M) \ne 0$. We modify Hofer's argument to prove the Weinstein conjecture for some examples of higher dimensional contact manifolds. In particular, we are able to show that the connected sum with a real projective space always has a closed contractible Reeb orbit.
How does one measure the failure of Hochschild homology to commute with colimits? Here I relate this question to a major open problem about dynamics in contact manifolds -- the assertion that Reeb orbits exist and are detected by symplectic homology. More precisely, I show that for polarizably Weinstein fillable contact manifolds, said property is equivalent to the failure of Hochschild homology to commute with certain colimits of representation categories of tree quivers. So as to be intelligible to algebraists, I try to include or black-box as much of the geometric background as possible.
This is the second of five papers that construct an isomorphism between the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology and the Heegaard Floer homology of a given compact, oriented 3-manifold. The isomorphism is given as a composition of three isomorphisms; the first of these relates a version of embedded contact homology on an an auxillary manifold to the Heegaard Floer homology on the original. This paper describes this auxilliary manifold, its geometry, and the relationship between the generators of the embedded contact homology chain complex and those of the Heegaard Floer chain complex. The pseudoholom…
The Weinstein conjecture, as the general existence problem for periodic orbits of Hamiltonian or Reeb flows, has been among the central questions in symplectic topology for over two decades and its investigation has led to understanding of some fundamental properties of Hamiltonian flows. In this paper we survey some recently developed and well-known methods of proving various particular cases of this conjecture and the closely related almost existence theorem. We also examine differentiability and continuity properties of the Hofer-Zehnder capacity function and relate these properties to the …
Nondegenerate periodic orbits in three-dimensional Reeb flows can be classified into three types, positive hyperbolic, negative hyperbolic and elliptic. As a problem which involves refining the three-dimensional Weinstein conjecture, D. Cristofaro-Gardiner, M. Hutchings and D. Pomerleano proposed whether every nondegenerate closed contact three manifold has at least one positive hyperbolic orbit except for lens spaces. In the same paper, they showed the existence of at least one simple hyperbolic orbit under $b_{1}>0$ by the isomorphism between ECH and Seiberg-Witten Floer (co)homology, especi…
We obtain several results for (iterated) planar contact manifolds in higher dimensions: (1) Iterated planar contact manifolds are not weakly symplectically semi-fillable. This generalizes a 3-dimensional result of Etnyre to a higher-dimensional setting. (2) They do not arise as nonseparating weak contact-type hypersurfaces in closed symplectic manifolds. This generalizes a result by Albers-Bramham-Wendl. (3) They satisfy the Weinstein conjecture, i.e. every contact form admits a closed Reeb orbit. This is proved by an alternative approach as that of [Acu], and is a higher-dimensional generaliz…
This paper and its sequel prove that every Legendrian knot in a closed three-manifold with a contact form has a Reeb chord. The present paper deduces this result from another theorem, asserting that an exact symplectic cobordism between contact 3-manifolds induces a map on (filtered) embedded contact homology satisfying certain axioms. The latter theorem will be proved in the sequel using Seiberg-Witten theory.
We prove that on closed Riemannian manifolds with infinite abelian, but not cyclic, fundamental group, any isometry that is homotopic to the identity possesses infinitely many invariant geodesics. We conjecture that the result remains true if the fundamental group is infinite cyclic. We also formulate a generalization of the isometry-invariant geodesics problem, and a generalization of the celebrated Weinstein conjecture: on a closed contact manifold with a selected contact form, any strict contactomorphism that is contact-isotopic to the identity possesses an invariant Reeb orbit.
We introduce the notion of asymptotically finitely generated contact structures, which states essentially that the Symplectic Homology in a certain degree of any filling of such contact manifolds is uniformly generated by only finitely many Reeb orbits. This property is used to generalize a famous result by Ustilovsky: We show that in a large class of manifolds (including all unit cotangent bundles and all Weinstein fillable contact manifolds with torsion first Chern class) each carries infinitely many exactly fillable contact structures. These are all different from the ones constructed recen…
We initiate here the study of Gromov-Witten theory of locally conformally symplectic manifolds or $\lcs$ manifolds, $\lcsm$'s for short, which are a natural generalization of both contact and symplectic manifolds. We find that the main new phenomenon (relative to the symplectic case) is the potential existence of holomorphic sky catastrophes, an analogue for pseudo-holomorphic curves of sky catastrophes in dynamical systems originally discovered by Fuller. We are able to rule these out in some situations, particularly for certain $\lcs$ 4-folds, and as one application we show that in dimension…
For a closed oriented smooth 4-manifold X with $b^2_+(X)>0$, the Seiberg-Witten invariants are well-defined. Taubes' "SW=Gr" theorem asserts that if X carries a symplectic form then these invariants are equal to well-defined counts of pseudoholomorphic curves, Taubes' Gromov invariants. In the absence of a symplectic form there are still nontrivial closed self-dual 2-forms which vanish along a disjoint union of circles and are symplectic elsewhere. This paper and its sequel describes well-defined counts of pseudoholomorphic curves in the complement of the zero-set of such "near-symplectic" for…
