We study the light rays in a static and spherically symmetric gravitational field of null aether theory (NAT). To this end, we employ the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to compute the deflection angle by a NAT black hole in the weak limit approximation. Using the optical metrics of the NAT black hole, we first obtain the Gaussian curvature and then calculate the leading terms of the deflection angle. Our calculations show how gravitational lensing is affected by the NAT field. We also show once again that the bending of light stems from a global and topological effect.
General quantum gravity arguments predict that Lorentz symmetry might not hold exactly in nature. This has motivated much interest in Lorentz breaking gravity theories recently. Among such models are vector-tensor theories with preferred direction established at every point of spacetime by a fixed-norm vector field. The dynamical vector field defined in this way is referred to as the \textquotedblleft aether." In this paper, we put forward the idea of a \textit{null} aether field and introduce, for the first time, the Null Aether Theory (NAT)--a vector-tensor theory. We first study the Newtoni…
In this paper, we study the shadow cast by two types of charged and slowly rotating black holes in Eisntein-aether theory of gravity. This two types of black holes are corresponding to two specific combinations of the coupling constants of the aether field, i.e., $c_{14} = 0$ but $c_{123}\neq 0$ for the first type and $c_{123} = 0$ for the second type, respectively. For both types of black holes, in addition to the mass and charge of the black holes, we show that the presence of the aether field can also affect the size of the shadow. For the first type black hole, it is shown that the shadow …
In this paper, we study the deflection angle for wormhole-like static aether solution by using Gibbons and Werner technique in non-plasma, plasma, and dark matter mediums. For this purpose, we use optical spacetime geometry to calculate the Gaussian optical curvature, then implement the Gauss-Bonnet theorem in weak field limits. Moreover, we compute the deflection angle by using a technique known as Keeton and Petters technique. Furthermore, we analyze the graphical behavior of the bending angle $ψ$ with respect to the impact parameter $b$, mass $m$ as an integration constant, and parameter $q…
We present a new asymptotically flat black hole solution in null aether theory (NAT) by applying Newman-Janis process. For this purpose, we study the asymptotically flat NAT black hole solution in Newman-Janis algorithm and then compute the tunneling radiation for NAT black hole. The Hawking temperature for NAT black hole depends upon the rotation parameter and charge of the black hole. The Hawking temperature describes a black hole with extremal event horizon. Furthermore, we analyze the graphical interpretation of Hawking temperature w.r.t event horizon and check the stability of black hole …
We study the null geodesics in a static circularly symmetric (SCS) black hole spacetime which is a solution in the $(2+1)$-dimensional massive gravity proposed by Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend (BHT massive gravity). We obtain analytic solutions for the null geodesic equation in the SCS black hole background and find the explicit form of deflection angles. We see that for various values of the impact parameter, the deflection angle can be positive, negative or even zero in this black hole spacetime. The negative deflection angle indicates the repulsive behavior of the gravity which comes from t…
The exact metric of a moving Kerr black hole with an arbitrary constant velocity is derived in Kerr-Schild coordinates. We then calculate the null equatorial gravitational deflection caused by a radially moving Kerr source up to the second post-Minkowskian order, acting as an application of the weak field limit of the metric. The bending angle of light is found to be consistent with the result given in the previous works.
We study optical metrics via null geodesics as a central force system, deduce the related Binet equation and apply the analysis to certain solutions of Einstein's equations with and without spherical symmetry. A general formula for the deflection angle in the weak lensing regime for the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini (ST) metric is derived. In addition, we obtain a new weak lensing formula for the deflection angle on the equatorial plane of a Kerr black hole (BH). We also explore the bending of light by considering the gravitational objects described by the Tomimatsu-Sato (TS) metric.
We introduce new methods to numerically construct for the first time stationary axisymmetric black hole solutions in Einstein-aether theory and study their properties. The key technical challenge is to impose regularity at the spin-2, 1, and 0 wave mode horizons. Interestingly we find the metric horizon, and various wave mode horizons, are not Killing horizons, having null generators to which no linear combination of Killing vectors is tangent, and which spiral from pole to equator or vice versa. Existing phenomenological constraints result in two regions of coupling parameters where the theor…
We derive angle differences between two null geodesics, propagating from light sources to an observer, on the de Sitter spacetime with multi-lensing objects. Assuming the lensing objects are mass monopoles on the de Sitter background, we derive the metric tensor by solving the Einstein equation perturbatively. On that spacetime, we solve a null geodesic parametrized by the coordinate time. Using the null geodesics, we define the angle differences in a coordinate invariant way. We take in the relativistic effects up to the first order of perturbation and clarify the magnitude of approximation e…
The deflection and gravitational lensing of light and massive particles in arbitrary static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically (anti-)de Sitter spacetimes are considered in this work. We first proved that for spacetimes whose metric satisfying certain conditions, the deflection of null rays with fixed closest distance will not depend on the cosmological constant $Λ$, while that of timelike signals and the apparent angle in gravitational lensing still depend on $Λ$. A two-step perturbative method is then developed to compute the change of the angular coordinate and total travel time in t…
In this work we study the deflection and gravitational lensing of null and timelike signals in the Kiselev spacetime in the weak field limit, to investigate the effects of the equation of state parameter $ω$ and the matter amount parameter $α$. In doing this, we extend a perturbative method previously developed for asymptotically flat spacetimes whose metric functions have integer-power asymptotic expansions to the case that may or may not be asymptotically flat but with non-integer power expansions. It is found that in the asymptotically flat case ($-1/3<ω<0$) the deflection angles are expres…
We have studied the null geodesics of the Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by quintessence matter. Quintessence matter is a candidate for dark energy. Here, we have done a detailed analysis of the geodesics and exact solutions are presented in terms of Jacobi-elliptic integrals for all possible energy and angular momentum of the photons. The circular orbits of the photons are studied in detail. As an application of the null geodesics, the angle of deflection of the photons are computed.
In this paper, the homotopy-perturbation method (HPM) is applied to obtain approximate analytical solutions for the gravitational deflection of light in General Relativity near Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by quintessence (Kiselev black hole). In order to demonstrate that HPM is able to yield acceptable solutions for the null-geodesics with easily computable terms, the HPM is tested for the simple examples of spherically symmetric spacetimes such as Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes. After that, the null-geodesics of light passing the vicinity of Kiselev black hole are st…
In this paper, we investigate the null geodesics of the static charged black hole in heterotic string theory. A detailed analysis of the geodesics are done in the Einstein frame as well as in the string frame. In the Einstein frame, the geodesics are solved exactly in terms of the Jacobi-elliptic integrals for all possible energy levels and angular momentum of the photons. In the string frame, the geodesics are presented for the circular orbits. As a physical application of the null geodesics, we have obtained the angle of deflection for the photons and the quasinormal modes of a massless scal…
We study some physical properties of black holes in Null Aether Theory (NAT)--a vector-tensor theory of gravity. We first review the black hole solutions in NAT and then derive the first law of black hole thermodynamics. The temperature of the black holes depends on both the mass and the NAT \textquotedblleft charge" of the black holes. The extreme cases where the temperature vanishes resemble the extreme Reissner-Nordström black holes. We also discuss the contribution of the NAT charge to the geodesics of massive and massless particles around the NAT black holes.
In this paper, the null geodesics and gravitational lensing in a nonsingular spacetime are investigated. According to the nature of the null geodesics, the spacetime is divided into several cases. In the weak deflection limit, we find the influence of the nonsingularity parameter $q$ on the positions and magnifications of the images is negligible. In the strong deflection limit, the coefficients and observables for the gravitational lensing in a nonsingular black hole background and a weakly nonsingular spacetime are obtained. Comparing these results, we find that, in a weakly nonsingular spac…
The deflection of a ray of light passing close to a gravitational mass, is generally calculated from the null geodesic which the light ray (photon) follows. However, there is an alternate approach, where the effect of gravitation on the ray of light is estimated by considering the ray to be passing through a material medium. Calculations have been done in this paper, following the later approach, to estimate the amount of deflection due to a static non-rotating mass. The refractive index of such a material medium has been calculated in a more rigorous manner in the present work and the final v…
We propose a perturbative method to compute the deflection angle of both null and massive particles for source and detector at finite distance. This method applies universally to the motion of particles with general velocity in the equatorial plane of stationary axisymmetric spacetimes or static spherical symmetric spacetimes that are asymptotically flat. The resultant deflection angle automatically arranges into a quasi-inverse series form of the impact parameter, with coefficients depending on the metric functions, the signal velocity and the source and detector locations through the apparen…
The deflection of light ray as it passes around a gravitational mass can be calculated by different methods. Such calculations are generally done by using the null geodesics under both strong field and weak field approximation. However, several authors have studied the gravitational deflection of light ray using material medium approach. For a static, non-rotating spherical mass, one can determine the deflection in Schwarzschild field, by expressing the line element in an isotropic form and calculating the refractive index to determine the trajectory of the light ray. In this paper, we draw ou…
In this work, we study the weak gravitational lensing in the background of Kerr-Newman black hole with quintessential dark energy. Initially, we compute the deflection angle of light by charged black hole with quintessential dark energy by utilizing the Gauss-Bnnet theorem. Firstly, we suppose the light rays on the equatorial plane in the axisymmetric spacetime. In doing so, we first find the corresponding optical metrics and then calculate the Gaussian optical curvature to utilize in Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Consequently, we calculate the deflection angle of light for rotating charged black hole…
Using a perturbative technique, in this work we study the deflection of null and timelike signals in the extended Einstein-Maxwell spacetime, the Born-Infeld gravity and the charged Ellis-Bronnikov (CEB) spacetime in the weak field limit. The deflection angles are found to take a (quasi-)series form of the impact parameter, and automatically takes into account the finite distance effect of the source and observer. The method is also applied to find the deflections in CEB spacetime with arbitrary dimension. It's shown that to the leading non-trivial order, the deflection in some $n$-dimensional…
We present a new method to compute the deflection of light rays in a perturbed FLRW geometry. We exploit the properties of the Geodesic Light Cone (GLC) gauge where null rays propagate at constant angular coordinates irrespectively of the given (inhomogeneous and/or anisotropic) geometry. The gravitational deflection of null geodesics can then be obtained, in any other gauge, simply by expressing the angular coordinates of the given gauge in terms of the GLC angular coordinates. We apply this method to the standard Poisson gauge, including scalar perturbations, and give the full result for the…
In this article, we calculate the deflection angle of tidal charged black hole (TCBH) in weak field limits. First we obtain the Gaussian optical curvature and then apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem on it. With the help of Gibbons-Werner method, we are able to calculate the light's deflection angle by TCBH in weak field limits. After calculating the deflection angle of light, we check the graphical behavior of TCBH. Moreover, we further find the light's deflection angle in the presence of plasma medium and also check the graphical behavior in the presence of plasma medium. Moreover, we investigate…
In this paper, we derive an exact black hole spacetime metric in the Einstein-Hilbert-Bumblebee (EHB) gravity around global monopole field. We study the horizon, temperature, and the photon sphere of the black hole. Using the null geodesics equation, we obtain the shadow cast by the Schwarzschild-like black hole with a topological defect in bumblebee gravity. Interestingly, the radius of shadow of the black hole increases with increase in the global monopole parameter. We also visualize the shadows and energy emission rates for different values of parameters. Moreover, using the Gauss-Bonnet t…
The time-like and null-like geodesics around compact objects are some of the best tools to classify and understand the structure of a space-time. In this paper, we study the null geodesics around charged static dilaton black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity. The physical parameters for non-radial geodesics including the effective potential, effective force, radius of the photon sphere and impact parameter are obtained and effects of the charge parameter and dilaton coupling constant on these quantities are studied. Possible photon motions for different values of the impact parameter a…
We study strong gravitational lensing in a static, spherically symmetric, naked singularity spacetime, without a photon sphere. The nature of the singularity is found to be lightlike. We discuss the characteristic lensing features of this naked singularity in the strong deflection limit. In spite of the absence of a photon sphere in this spacetime, the bending angle of light diverges, as it approaches the singularity. However, unlike black holes, it is found that the nature of this divergence is nonlogarithmic, and we derive an analytic formula for the same. Moreover, the relativistic rings pr…
In this paper, we investigate the deflection of a charged particle moving in the equatorial plane of Kerr-Newman spacetime, focusing on weak field limit. To this end, we use the Jacobi geometry, which can be described in three equivalent forms, namely Randers-Finsler metric, Zermelo navigation problem, and $(n+1)$-dimensional stationtary spacetime picture. Based on Randers data and Gauss-Bonnet theorem, we utilize osculating Riemannian manifold method and the generalized Jacobi metric method to study the deflection angle, respectively. In the $(n+1)$-dimensional spacetime picture, the motion o…
Given the extreme accuracy reached by future global space astrometry, one needs a global relativistic modeling of observations. A relativistic definition of astrometric observables is then essential to find uniquely coordinates, parallax and proper motion of a stellar object. The standard procedure is to explicitly solve the null geodesic equations to describe the trajectory of a photon emitted by a celestial object and received by a moving observing satellite. However, this task can be avoided if one builds an astrometric set up using the recent formalism of time transfer functions.

We study photon orbits in the background of $(1+3)$-dimensional static, spherically symmetric geometries. In particular, we have obtained exact analytical solutions to the null geodesic equations for light rays in terms of the Weierstraß function for space-times arising in the context of scale-dependent gravity. The trajectories in the $(x-y)$ plane are shown graphically, and we make a comparison with similar geometries arising in different contexts. The light deflection angle is computed as a function of the running parameter $ξ$, and an upper bound for the latter is obtained.
We analysed the shadow cast by charged rotating black hole (BH) in presence of perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM). We studied the null geodesic equations and obtained the shadow of the charged rotating BH to see the effects of PFDM parameter $γ$, charge $Q$ and rotation parameter $a$, and it is noticed that the size as well as the shape of BH shadow is affected due to PFDM parameter, charge and rotation parameter. Thus, it is seen that the presence of dark matter around a BH affects its spacetime. We also investigated the influence of all the parameters (PFDM parameter $γ$, BHs charge $Q$ and ro…
Geodesics of both lightrays and timelike particles with nonzero mass are deflected in a gravitational field. In this work we apply the perturbative method developed in Ref. \cite{Jia:2020dap} to compute the deflection angle of both null and timelike rays in the weak field limit for four spacetimes. We obtained the deflection angles for the Bardeen spacetime to the eleventh order of $m/b$ where $m$ is the ADM mass and $b$ is the impact parameter, and for the Hayward, Janis-Newman-Winicour and Einstein-Born-Infeld spacetimes to the ninth, seventh and eleventh order respectively. The effect of th…
We investigate gravitational lensing and particle motions around non-asymptotically flat black hole spacetime in non-linear, ghost-free massive gravity theory, called de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity. Deflection angle formulae are derived in terms of perihelion parameter. The deflection angle can be positive, zero or even negative with various perihelion distance. The negative angle reveals repulsive behaviour of gravity from a linear term $γ$ in the dRGT black hole solution. We also find an analytically approximated formula of deflection angle in two regimes: large and small $γ…

We analytically investigate the shadows cast by rotating black holes in the asymptotically safe gravity (ASG) by deriving complete null geodesics and observables using the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and Carter separable method. It turns out that the apparent shape and size of the shadow depend on the ASG parameters ($ζ, γ$) in addition to other black hole parameters ($M, a$). The size of black hole shadows monotonically decreases and shadows get more distorted with increasing values of ASG parameters when compared with the Kerr black hole shadows. In turn, we use shadow observables to estimate b…
Both null and timelike rays experience trajectory bending in a gravitational field. In this work, we systematically develop a perturbative method to compute the deflection angle of rays with general velocity $v$ in arbitrary static and spherically symmetric spacetimes and in equatorial plane of arbitrary static and axisymmetric spacetimes. We show that the expansion in the large closest approach $x_0$ limit depends on the asymptotic behavior of the metric functions only, and the generated integrand is always integrable, resulting in a deflection angle in a series form of either $x_0$ or $b$, t…
Nonlinear electrodynamics is known as the generalizations of Maxwell electrodynamics at strong fields and presents interesting features such as curing the classical divergences present in the linear theory when coupled to general relativity. In this paper, we consider the asymptotically flat Reissner-Nordström black hole solution with higher-order magnetic correction in Einstein-nonlinear-Maxwell fields. We study the effect of the magnetic charge parameters on the black hole, viz. weak deflection angle of photons and massive particles using Gauss-bonnet theorem. Moreover, we apply the Keeton-P…

We study the geodesics of charged black holes in polynomial Maxwell Lagrangians, a subclass of models within the nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED). Specifically, we consider black holes in Kruglov, power-law, and Ayon-Beato-Garcia models. Our exploration on the corresponding null bound states reveals that photon can orbit the extremal black holes in stable radii outside the corresponding horizon. The reason behind this is the well-known theorem that a photon in a NLED background propagates along its own {\it effective} geometry. This nonlinearity is able to shift the local minimum of the effect…
