In this work, we develop a general perturbative procedure to find the off-equatorial plane deflections in the weak deflection limit in general stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes, allowing the existence of the generalized Carter constant. Deflections of both null and timelike rays, with the finite distance effect of the source and detector taken into account, are obtained as dual series of $M/r_0$ and $r_0/r_{s,d}$. These deflections allow a set of exact gravitational lensing equations from which the images' apparent angular positions are solved. The method and general results are then applied to the Kerr-Newmann, Kerr-Sen, and rotating Simpson-Visser spacetimes to study the effect of the spin and characteristic (effective) charge of the spacetimes and the source altitude on the deflection angles and image apparent angles. It is found that, in general, both the spacetime spin and charge only affect the deflections from the second non-trivial order, while the source altitude influences the deflection from the leading order. Because of this, it is found that, in gravitational lensing in realistic situations, it is hard to measure the effects of the spacetime spin and charge from the images' apparent locations. We also presented the off-equatorial deflections in the rotating Bardeen, Hayward, Ghosh, and Tinchev black hole spacetimes.
Deflection angle for a light ray travelling in the equatorial plane of a rotating Kerr mass has been already calculated by various investigators. Considering the light ray to be travelling only slightly above the equatorial plane, calculations have been made for such a ray for its deflection angle. In this paper, we calculate deflection angles for the light ray at various heights, which are small compared to the impact parameter and derive corresponding analytical expressions for deflection angle.
Two theorems are proved concerning how stationary axisymmetric electrovac spacetimes that are equatorially symmetric or equatorially antisymmetric can be characterized correctly in terms of the Ernst potentials $\E$ and $Φ$ or in terms of axis-data.
In this second paper devoted to the equatorial symmetry/antisymmetry of stationary axisymmetric electrovac spacetimes we show how two theorems proved in our previous paper (Ernst, Manko and Ruiz 2006 Class. Quantum Grav. 23, 4945) can be utilized to construct exact solutions that are equatorially symmetric or antisymmetric.
Analytical series expansions for the bending of light in the equatorial plane of a Kerr black hole are presented in both the strong and weak deflection regimes. It is critical that these are known in analytical form so further analysis can be done for predicting different properties of images formed in gravitational lensing. Starting with the exact bending angle in terms of the spin parameter, we apply a perturbative scheme for rewriting the bending angle as series expansions in terms of the impact parameter of the incident light ray. The asymmetry introduced by the black hole spin results in …
In this work, we base on the second-order post-Minkowskian equations of motion, and apply an iterative technique to analytically derive the gravitational deflection of the relativistic particles in the equatorial plane of Kerr-Newman black hole with a radial (or longitudinal) and constant velocity. We find that the kinematically correctional effects on the second-order contributions to the deflection can be expressed into a very compact form, which are valid for both the massive particle and photon. Our result reduces to the previous formulation for the first-order deflection caused by a movin…
In this paper we present an analytical treatment of gravitational lensing by Kerr black holes in the limit of very large deflection angles, restricting to observers in the equatorial plane. We accomplish our objective starting from the Schwarzschild black hole and adding corrections up to second order in the black hole spin. This is sufficient to provide a full description of all caustics and the inversion of lens mapping for sources near them. On the basis of these formulae we argue that relativistic images of Low Mass X-ray Binaries around Sgr A* are very likely to be seen by future X-ray in…
We study the deflection angle of a light ray as it traverses on the equatorial plane of a charged spinning black hole. We provide detailed analysis of the light ray's trajectory, and derive the closed-form expression of the deflection angle due to the black hole in terms of elliptic integrals. In particular, the geodesic equation of the light ray along the radial direction can be used to define an appropriate ``effective potential". The nonzero charge of the black hole shows stronger repulsive effects to prevent light rays from falling into the black hole as compared with the Kerr case. As a r…
In the present paper, we study numerically the equatorial lensing and quasiequatorial lensing by Kerr black hole pierced by a cosmic string in the strong deflection limit. We calculate the strong deflection limit coefficients and the deflection angle, which are found to depend closely on the cosmic string parameter $β$ and dimensionless spin $a_{*}$. The magnification and positions of relativistic images are also computed in the strong deflection limit and a two-dimensional lens equation is derived. The most important and outstanding effect is that the caustics drift away from the optical axis…
We solve in closed analytic form space-like geodesic equations in the Kerr gravitational field. Such geodesic equations describe the motion of neutral tachyons (faster than light particles) in the Kerr spacetime. More specifically we derive the closed form solution for the deflection angle of a neutral tachyon on an equatorial orbit in Kerr spacetime. The solution is expressed elegantly in terms of Lauricella's hypergeometric function F_{D}.We applied our results to three cases: first, for the calculation of the deflection angle of a neutral tachyon on an equatorial trajectory in the gravitati…
We investigate the deflection of light by a rotating global monopole spacetime and a rotating Letelier spacetime in the weak deflection approximation. To this end, we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the corresponding osculating optical geometries and show that the deflection of light increases due to the presence of the global monopole parameter and the string cloud parameter, respectively. The results obtained for the deflection angle in the equatorial plane generalize known results for the corresponding non-rotating global monopole and Letelier spacetimes as well as the Kerr solution.
Using a new geometrical method introduced by Werner, we find the deflection angle in the weak limit approximation by a spinning cosmic string in the context of the Einstein-Cartan (EC) theory of gravity. We begin by adopting the String-Randers optical metric, then we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the optical geometry and derive the leading terms of the deflection angle in the equatorial plane. Calculations shows that light deflection is affected by the intrinsic spin of the cosmic string and torsion.
Both null and timelike rays experience trajectory bending in a gravitational field. In this work, we systematically develop a perturbative method to compute the deflection angle of rays with general velocity $v$ in arbitrary static and spherically symmetric spacetimes and in equatorial plane of arbitrary static and axisymmetric spacetimes. We show that the expansion in the large closest approach $x_0$ limit depends on the asymptotic behavior of the metric functions only, and the generated integrand is always integrable, resulting in a deflection angle in a series form of either $x_0$ or $b$, t…
The exact metric of a moving Kerr black hole with an arbitrary constant velocity is derived in Kerr-Schild coordinates. We then calculate the null equatorial gravitational deflection caused by a radially moving Kerr source up to the second post-Minkowskian order, acting as an application of the weak field limit of the metric. The bending angle of light is found to be consistent with the result given in the previous works.
We propose a perturbative method to compute the deflection angle of both null and massive particles for source and detector at finite distance. This method applies universally to the motion of particles with general velocity in the equatorial plane of stationary axisymmetric spacetimes or static spherical symmetric spacetimes that are asymptotically flat. The resultant deflection angle automatically arranges into a quasi-inverse series form of the impact parameter, with coefficients depending on the metric functions, the signal velocity and the source and detector locations through the apparen…
Higher-order photon rings can be expected to be detected in a more detailed image of the black hole found in future observations. These rings are lensed images of the luminous matter surrounding the black hole and are formed by photons that loop around it. In this paper we have succeeded to derive an analytical expression for the shape of the higher-order rings in the form that is most convenient for application: the explicit equation of the curve in polar coordinates. The formula describes the apparent shape of the higher-order image of the circular ring with the given radius around Schwarzsc…
Future space astrometry missions are planned to measure positions and/or parallaxes of celestial objects with an accuracy of the order of the microarcsecond. At such a level of accuracy, it will be indispensable to take into account the influence of the mass multipole structure of the giant planets on the bending of light rays. Within the parametrized post-Newtonian formalism, we present an algorithmic procedure enabling to determine explicitly this influence on a light ray connecting two points located at a finite distance. Then we specialize our formulae in the cases where 1) the light sourc…
In this work, we study the weak gravitational lensing in the background of Kerr-Newman black hole with quintessential dark energy. Initially, we compute the deflection angle of light by charged black hole with quintessential dark energy by utilizing the Gauss-Bnnet theorem. Firstly, we suppose the light rays on the equatorial plane in the axisymmetric spacetime. In doing so, we first find the corresponding optical metrics and then calculate the Gaussian optical curvature to utilize in Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Consequently, we calculate the deflection angle of light for rotating charged black hole…
The observation of the bending of light by mass, now known as gravitational lensing, was key in establishing general relativity as one of the pillars of modern physics. In the past couple of decades, there has been increasing interest in using gravitational lensing to test general relativity beyond the weak deflection limit. Black holes and neutron stars produce the strong gravitational fields needed for such tests. For a rotating compact object, the distinction between prograde and retrograde photon trajectories becomes important. In this paper, we explore subtleties that arise in interpretin…
In this paper, we investigate the deflection of a charged particle moving in the equatorial plane of Kerr-Newman spacetime, focusing on weak field limit. To this end, we use the Jacobi geometry, which can be described in three equivalent forms, namely Randers-Finsler metric, Zermelo navigation problem, and $(n+1)$-dimensional stationtary spacetime picture. Based on Randers data and Gauss-Bonnet theorem, we utilize osculating Riemannian manifold method and the generalized Jacobi metric method to study the deflection angle, respectively. In the $(n+1)$-dimensional spacetime picture, the motion o…
In the present work we study numerically quasi-equatorial lensing by the charged, stationary, axially-symmetric Kerr-Sen dilaton-axion black hole in the strong deflection limit. In this approximation we compute the magnification and the positions of the relativistic images. The most outstanding effect is that the Kerr-Sen black hole caustics drift away from the optical axis and shift in clockwise direction with respect to the Kerr caustics. The intersections of the critical curves on the equatorial plane as a function of the black hole angular momentum are found, and it is shown that they decr…
In order to clarify effects of the finite distance from a lens object to a light source and a receiver, the gravitational deflection of light has been recently reexamined by using the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) theorem in differential geometry [Ishihara et al. 2016]. The purpose of the present paper is to give a short review of a series of works initiated by the above paper. First, we provide the definition of the gravitational deflection angle of light for the finite-distance source and receiver in a static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat spacetime. We discuss the geometrical invariance…
In this paper, using the recent method proposed by Ono, Ishihara and Asada (OIA) who extend the idea of Gibbons and Werner to the stationary and axisymmetric case, we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the optical metric of the non-rotating and rotating Damour-Solodukhin wormholes spacetimes to study the weak gravitational lensing by these objects. Furthermore, we study the strong gravitational lensing by the non-rotating Damour-Solodukhin wormholes using the Bozza's method to see the differences between the weak lensing and the strong lensing. We demonstrate the relation between the strong def…
We present here a detailed derivation of an explicit spin-dependent expression for the bending angle of light as it traverses in the equatorial plane of a spinning black hole. We show that the deflection produced in the presence of the black hole angular momentum explicitly depends on whether the motion of the light ray is in the direction, or opposite to the spin. Compared to the zero-spin Schwarzschild case, the bending angle is greater for direct orbits, and {\em smaller} for retrograde orbits, confirming our physical intuition about the loss of left-right symmetry from a lensing perspectiv…
Spin of a test particle is a fundamental property that can affect its motion in a gravitational field. In this work we consider the effect of particle spin on its deflection angle and gravitational lensing in the equatorial plane of arbitrary stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes. To do this we developed a perturbative method that can be applied to spinning signals with arbitrary asymptotic velocity and takes into account the finite distance effect of the source and the observer. The deflection angle $Δφ$ and total travel time $Δt$ are expressed as (quasi-)power series whose coefficients are …
Bondi's approach to the construction of a coordinate system is used with a different choice of gauge, in accordance with which the radial coordinate r is an affine parameter, to cast the metric tensor into a form suitable for use with the Newman-Penrose null tetrad formalism. The choice of tetrad has the result that the equations and all the functions that appear in them are real-valued. A group classification of the Sachs equations in this gauge leads to a unique expression for the first of the five independent elements $Ψ_0$ of the Weyl spinor, and to the corresponding exact solutions for tw…
We investigate the existence and phenomenology of stable photon orbits (SPOs) in stationary axisymmetric electrovacuum spacetimes in four dimensions. First, we review the classification of equatorial circular photon orbits on Kerr-Newman spacetimes in the charge-spin plane. Second, using a Hamiltonian formulation, we show that Reissner-Nordström di-holes (a family encompassing the Majumdar-Papapetrou and Weyl-Bach special cases) admit SPOs, in a certain parameter regime that we investigate. Third, we explore the transition from order to chaos for typical SPOs bounded within a toroidal region a…
From Newtonian potential-density pairs we construct three-dimensional axisymmetric relativistic sources for a Majumdar-Papapetrou type conformastatic spacetime. As simple examples, we build two family of relativistic thick disks from of the first two Miyamoto-Nagai potential-density pairs used in Newtonian gravity to model flat galaxies, and a three-component relativistic model of galaxy (bulge, disk and dark matter halo). We study the equatorial circular motion of test particles around such structures. Also the stability of the orbits is analyzed for radial perturbation using an extension of …
In this paper, we study the weak gravitational deflection of relativistic massive particles for a receiver and source at finite distance from the lens in stationary, axisymmetric and asymptotically flat spacetimes. For this purpose, we extend the generalized optical metric method to the generalized Jacobi metric method by using the Jacobi-Maupertuis Randers-Finsler metric. More specifically,we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the generalized Jacobi metric space and then obtain an expression for calculating the deflection angle, which is related to Gaussian curvature of generalized optical met…
We analyze parallel transport of a vector field around an equatorial orbit in Kerr and stationary axisymmetric spacetimes that are reflection symmetric about their equatorial planes. As in Schwarzschild spacetime, there is a band structure of holonomy invariance. The new feature introduced by rotation is a shift in the timelike component of the vector, which is the holonomic manifestation of the gravitomagnetic clock effect.
By using a method improved with a generalized optical metric, the deflection of light for an observer and source at finite distance from a lens object in a stationary, axisymmetric and asymptotically flat spacetime has been recently discussed [Ono, Ishihara, Asada, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 96}, 104037 (2017)]. In this paper, we study a possible extension of this method to an asymptotically nonflat spacetime. We discuss a rotating global monopole. Our result of the deflection angle of light is compared with a recent work on the same spacetime but limited within the asymptotic source and observer [Jusu…
We study the motion of massless test particles in a five dimensional (5D) Myers-Perry black hole spacetime with two spin parameters. The behaviour of the effective potential in view of different values of black hole parameters is discussed in the equatorial plane. The frequency shift of photons is calculated which is found to depend on the spin parameter of black hole and the observed redshift is discussed accordingly. The deflection angle and the strong deflection limit coefficients are also calculated and their behaviour with the spin parameters is analysed in detail. It is observed that the…
Parallel transport along circular orbits in orthogonally transitive stationary axisymmetric spacetimes is described explicitly relative to Lie transport in terms of the electric and magnetic parts of the induced connection. The influence of both the gravitoelectromagnetic fields associated with the zero angular momentum observers and of the Frenet-Serret parameters of these orbits as a function of their angular velocity is seen on the behavior of parallel transport through its representation as a parameter-dependent Lorentz transformation between these two inner-product preserving transports w…
We present an analytical treatment of gravitational lensing by a Kerr black hole in the weak deflection limit. Lightlike geodesics are expanded as a Taylor series up to and including third-order terms in m/b and a/b, where m is the black hole mass, a the angular momentum and b the impact parameter of the light ray. Positions and magnifications of individual images are computed with a perturbative analysis. At this order, the degeneracy with the translated Schwarzschild lens is broken. The critical curve is still a circle displaced from the black hole position in the equatorial direction and th…
We derive a necessary condition for the existence of marginally stable circular orbits of test particles in stationary axisymmetric spacetimes which possess a refection symmetry with respect to the equatorial plane; photon orbits are also addressed. Energy and angular momentum are shown to decouple from metric quantities, rendering a purely geometric characterization of circular orbits for this general class of metrics. The subsequent system is analyzed using resultants, providing an algorithmic approach for finding MSCO conditions. MSCOs are explicitly calculated for concrete examples of phys…
Photon region (PR) in the strong gravitational field is defined as a compact region where photons can travel endlessly without going to infinity or disappearing at the event horizon. In Schwarzschild metric PR degenerates to the two-dimensional photon sphere $r=3r_g/2$ where closed circular photon orbits are located. The photon sphere as a three-dimensional hypersurface in spacetime is umbilic (its second quadratic form is pure trace). In Kerr metric the equatorial circular orbits have different radii for prograde, $r_p$, and retrograde, $r_r$, motion (where $r$ is Boyer-Lindquist radial varia…
In this second paper, we develop an analytical theory of quasi-equatorial lensing by Kerr black holes. In this setting we solve perturbatively our general lens equation with displacement given in Paper I, going beyond weak-deflection Kerr lensing to third order in our expansion parameter epsilon, which is the ratio of the angular gravitational radius to the angular Einstein radius. We obtain new formulas and results for the bending angle, image positions, image magnifications, total unsigned magnification, and centroid, all to third order in epsilon and including the displacement. New results …
