In order to clarify effects of the finite distance from a lens object to a light source and a receiver, the gravitational deflection of light has been recently reexamined by using the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) theorem in differential geometry [Ishihara et al. 2016]. The purpose of the present paper is to give a short review of a series of works initiated by the above paper. First, we provide the definition of the gravitational deflection angle of light for the finite-distance source and receiver in a static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat spacetime. We discuss the geometrical invariance of the definition by using the GB theorem. The present definition is used to discuss finite-distance effects on the light deflection in Schwarzschild spacetime, for both cases of the weak deflection and strong deflection. Next, we extend the definition to stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes. We compute finite-distance effects on the deflection angle of light for Kerr black holes and rotating Teo wormholes. Our results are consistent with the previous works if we take the infinite-distance limit. We briefly mention also the finite-distance effects on the light deflection by Sagittarius A$^*$.
We investigate the deflection angle in a strong deflection limit for a marginally unstable photon sphere in a general asymptotically flat, static and spherically symmetric spacetime under some assumptions to calculate observables. The deflection angle of a light ray reflected by the marginally unstable photon sphere diverges nonlogarithmically while the one reflected by a photon sphere diverges logarithmically. We apply our formula to a Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime and Hayward spacetime.
The physical deflection angle of a light ray propagating in a space-time supplied with an asymptotically flat metric has to be expressed in terms of the impact parameter.
We investigate the affine perturbation series of the deflection angle of a ray near the photon sphere of an extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole. We compare the 0th and 1st orders of the affine perturbation series with the deflection angle in a strong deflection limit. We conclude that the 0th order of the affine perturbation series is more accurate than the deflection angle in the strong deflection limit and that we should improve a strong-deflection-limit analysis by using the 0th order of the affine perturbation series.
Gravitational lensing by the light sphere of compact objects like black holes and wormholes will give us information on the compact objects. In this paper, we provide an improved strong deflection limit analysis in a general asymptotically flat, static, spherically symmetric spacetime. The strong deflection limit analysis also works in ultrastatic spacetimes. As an example of an ultrastatic spacetime, we reexamine the deflection angle in the strong deflection limit in an Ellis wormhole spacetime. Using the strong deflection limit, we obtain the deflection angle analytically for the Reissner-No…
Nonlinear electrodynamic (NLED) theories are well-motivated for their extensions to classical electrodynamics in the strong field regime, and have been extensively investigated in seeking for regular black hole solutions. In this paper, we focus on two spherically symmetric and static black hole solutions based on two types of NLED models: the Euler-Heisenberg NLED model and the Bronnikov NLED model, and calculate the weak deflection angle of light by these two black holes with the help of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. We investigate the effects of the one-loop corrections to quantum electrodynami…
In this paper, we calculate the weak deflection angle by Casimir wormhole and its shadow. To do so, we derive the Gaussian optical curvature and use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Then we find the deflection angle by Casimir wormhole in weak field limits. Moreover, we obtain the weak deflection angle in the presence of plasma medium and see the effect of the plasma medium on the weak deflection angle. Moreover, we study a shadow of Casimir wormhole and we plot and discuss them. We show the shadow of Casimir wormhole's behavior when changing the value of $a$.
In this paper, we first use the optical metrics of black-bounce traversable wormholes to calculate the Gaussian curvature. Then we use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to obtain the weak deflection angle of light from the black-bounce traversable wormholes. Then we investigate the effect of dark matter medium on weak deflection angle using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. We show how weak deflection angle of wormhole is affected by the bounce parameter $a$. Using the Gauss-bonnet theorem for calculating weak deflection angle shows us that light bending can be thought as a global and topological effect.
In this work, we study the weak gravitational lensing in the background of Kerr-Newman black hole with quintessential dark energy. Initially, we compute the deflection angle of light by charged black hole with quintessential dark energy by utilizing the Gauss-Bnnet theorem. Firstly, we suppose the light rays on the equatorial plane in the axisymmetric spacetime. In doing so, we first find the corresponding optical metrics and then calculate the Gaussian optical curvature to utilize in Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Consequently, we calculate the deflection angle of light for rotating charged black hole…
In this paper, we study the gravitational lensing by some black hole classes within the non-linear electrodynamics in weak field limits. First, we calculate an optical geometry of the non-linear electrodynamics black hole then we use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for finding deflection angle in weak field limits. The effect of non-linear electrodynamics on the deflection angle in leading order terms is studied. Furthermore, we discuss the effects of the plasma medium on the weak deflection angle.
Deflection angle for a light ray travelling in the equatorial plane of a rotating Kerr mass has been already calculated by various investigators. Considering the light ray to be travelling only slightly above the equatorial plane, calculations have been made for such a ray for its deflection angle. In this paper, we calculate deflection angles for the light ray at various heights, which are small compared to the impact parameter and derive corresponding analytical expressions for deflection angle.
A novel approach to the calculation of the deflection of highly relativistic test particles in gravitational fields is described. We make use of the light-like boosts of the gravitational fields of the sources. Examples are given of the deflection of highly relativistic particles in the Schwarzschild and Kerr gravitational fields, in the field of a static, axially symmetric, multipole source and in the field of a cosmic string. The deflection of spinning particles is also discussed.
The new method of invariant definition of the measurable angle of light deflection in the static central symmetric gravitational field is suggested. The predicted pure gravitational contribution to the deflection angle slightly differs from its classical estimate and one may hope that this discrepancy could be experimentally detected in the near future. In this letter, we have investigated the deflection angle of light by wormholes using a new geometrical method known as Gibbons-Werner method (GW). In particular we have calculated the deflection angle of light in the weak limit approximation in two wormhole spacetime geometries: Ellis wormhole and Janis-Newman-Winnicour (JNW) wormhole. We have employed the famous Gauss-Bonnet theorem (GBT) to the Ellis wormhole optical geometry and JNW wormhole optical geometry, respectively. By using GBT, we computed the deflection angles in leading orders by these wormholes and our results were compared wit…
Explicit expressions for the bending angle of light deflection arising from phenomenologically deformed black-hole metrics, subject to possible weak and strong quantum gravity effects, respectively, are obtained, by a highly effective method. The accuracy and effectiveness of these expressions are then illustrated by numerically solving the differential equation governing the deflection angle directly in the weak quantum effect situation.
The helicity modification of light polarization which is induced by the gravitational deflection from a classical heavy rotating body, like a star or a planet, is considered. The expression of the helicity asymmetry is derived; this asymmetry signals the gravitationally induced spin transfer from the rotating body to the scattered photons.
Geodesics of both lightrays and timelike particles with nonzero mass are deflected in a gravitational field. In this work we apply the perturbative method developed in Ref. \cite{Jia:2020dap} to compute the deflection angle of both null and timelike rays in the weak field limit for four spacetimes. We obtained the deflection angles for the Bardeen spacetime to the eleventh order of $m/b$ where $m$ is the ADM mass and $b$ is the impact parameter, and for the Hayward, Janis-Newman-Winicour and Einstein-Born-Infeld spacetimes to the ninth, seventh and eleventh order respectively. The effect of th…
In this work, we investigate the weak deflection angle of light from exact black hole within the non-linear electrodynamics. First we calculate the Gaussian optical curvature using the optical spacetime geometry. With the help of modern geometrical way popularized by Gibbons and Werner, we examine the deflection angle of light from exact black hole. For this desire, we determine the optical Gaussian curvature and execute the Gauss-Bonnet theorem on optical metric and calculate the leading terms of deflection angle in the weak limit approximation. Furthermore, we likewise study the plasma mediu…
Expression for second post-Newtonian level gravitational deflection angle of massive particles is obtained in a model independent framework. Several of its important implications including the possibility of testing gravitational theories at that level are discussed.
Observations of gravitational lenses in strong gravitational fields give us a clue to understanding dark compact objects. In this paper, we extend a method to obtain a deflection angle in a strong deflection limit provided by Bozza [Phys. Rev. D 66, 103001 (2002)] to apply to ultrastatic spacetimes. We also discuss on the order of an error term in the deflection angle. Using the improved method, we consider gravitational lensing by an Ellis wormhole, which is an ultrastatic wormhole of the Morris-Thorne class.
Using the geodesic method and the perturbative approach, we study the deflection of light by time-periodic spherically symmetric gravitational fields. Assuming the weakness of the gravitational field, we derive general formulas that determine the deflection angle in the leading order approximation. The formulas are valid for both time-periodic and static metrics. Using these results, we calculate the deflection angle of a light ray passing through a spherically symmetric oscillating distribution of a self-gravitating scalar field with a logarithmic potential. It turned out that in this case th…
We report the effect of the cosmological constant and the internal energy density of a cosmic string on the deflection angle of light in the spacetime of a rotating cosmic string with internal structure. We first revisit the deflection angle by a rotating cosmic string and then provide a generalization using the geodesic equations and the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem. We show there is an agreement between the two methods when employing higher order terms of the linear mass density of the cosmic string. By modifying the integration domain for the global conical topology, we resolve the inconsistency be…
We propose a perturbative method to compute the deflection angle of both null and massive particles for source and detector at finite distance. This method applies universally to the motion of particles with general velocity in the equatorial plane of stationary axisymmetric spacetimes or static spherical symmetric spacetimes that are asymptotically flat. The resultant deflection angle automatically arranges into a quasi-inverse series form of the impact parameter, with coefficients depending on the metric functions, the signal velocity and the source and detector locations through the apparen…
In this paper the problem of gravitational deflection of relativistic charged massive particles in slowly rotating Kerr-Newman black holes is considered. Toward this purpose we have used two methods: Firstly, we have applied the Gauss-Bonnet theorem (GBT) and the optical geometry to evaluate the deflection angle of charged particles. Secondly, we have presented a detailed analysis of the deflection angle by means of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation recovering the same invariant result for the deflection angle in leading order terms. The crucial point behind the first method is to use the correspon…
A comparison between the deflection angles of massive and massless particles in the Shchwarzschild space-time and their consequences on black hole shadows
In this paper, we argue that one can calculate the weak deflection angle of light in the background of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion black hole using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. To support this, the optical geometry of the black hole with the Gibbons-Werner method are used to obtain the deflection angle of light in the weak field limits. Moreover, we investigate the effect of a plasma medium on deflection of light for a given black hole. Because of dilaton and axion are one of the candidate of the dark matter, it can give us a hint on observation of dark matter which is supported by the black h…
In this article, we calculate the deflection angle of tidal charged black hole (TCBH) in weak field limits. First we obtain the Gaussian optical curvature and then apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem on it. With the help of Gibbons-Werner method, we are able to calculate the light's deflection angle by TCBH in weak field limits. After calculating the deflection angle of light, we check the graphical behavior of TCBH. Moreover, we further find the light's deflection angle in the presence of plasma medium and also check the graphical behavior in the presence of plasma medium. Moreover, we investigate…
This paper is devoted to compute the weak deflection angle for Kalb-Ramond traversable wormhole solution in plasma and dark matter mediums by using the method of Gibbons and Werner. To acquire our results, we evaluate Gaussian optical curvature by utilizing the Gauss-Bonnet theorem in the weak field limits. We also investigate the graphical influence of deflection angle $\tildeα$ with respect to the impact parameter $σ$ and minimal radius $r_0$ in plasma medium. Moreover, we derive the deflection angle by using different method known as Keeton and Petters method. We also examine that if we rem…
This paper studies the deflection of charged particles in a dipole magnetic field in Schwarzschild spacetime background in the weak field approximation. To calculate the deflection angle, we use Jacobi metric and Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Since the corresponding Jacobi metric is a Finsler metric of Randers type, we use both the osculating Riemannian metric method and generalized Jacobi metric method. The deflection angle up to fourth order is obtained and the effect of the magnetic field is discussed. It is found that the magnetic dipole will increase (or decrease) the deflection angle of a positi…
In this paper, the gravitational deflection of relativistic massive particles up to the second post-Minkowskian order by static and spherically symmetric wormholes is investigated in the weak-field limit. These wormholes include the Janis-Newman-Winicour wormhole, a class of zero Ricci scalar scalar-tensor wormholes, and a class of charged Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton wormholes. With the Jacobi metric approach, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem is employed to study the gravitational deflection. In this scheme, the deflection angle as a topological effect is considered. Moreover, we analyze the influence of…
In this paper, we examine the weak deflection angle and greybody bound for magnetized regular black hole.$~$ For this purpose, we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem on the black hole and obtain the deflection angle in plasma and non-plasma mediums.$~$ Moreover, we investigate graphically the effect of impact parameter on the deflection angle for regular black hole in both mediums. We examine that deflection angle goes to infinity when the impact parameter approaches to zero. We also observe that deflection angle shows negative behaviour at $q=0.6$ and $q=2.09$ but at $0.6<q<2.09$, angle shows the …
The objective of this paper is to analyze the weak deflection angle of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the presence of plasma medium. To attain our results, we implement the Gibbons and Werner approach and use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to Einstein gravity to acquire the resulting deflection angle of photon's ray in the weak field limit. Moreover, we illustrate the behavior of plasma medium and non-plasma mediums on the deflection of photon's ray in the framework of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Similarly, we observe the graphical influences of deflection angle on Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity…
We investigate possible quantum gravity (QG) effects on the gravitational deflection of light. Two forms of deformation of the Schwarzschild spacetime are proposed. The first ansatz is a given Finslerian line element, it could be regarded as a weak QG effect on the Schwarzschild spacetime. Starting from this ansatz, we deduce the deflection angle of the light ray which passes a weak gravitational source. The second ansatz could be regarded as a strong QG effect on the Schwarzschild spacetime. The deflection angle of the light ray which passes a weak gravitational source is deduced in this Riem…
Both null and timelike rays experience trajectory bending in a gravitational field. In this work, we systematically develop a perturbative method to compute the deflection angle of rays with general velocity $v$ in arbitrary static and spherically symmetric spacetimes and in equatorial plane of arbitrary static and axisymmetric spacetimes. We show that the expansion in the large closest approach $x_0$ limit depends on the asymptotic behavior of the metric functions only, and the generated integrand is always integrable, resulting in a deflection angle in a series form of either $x_0$ or $b$, t…
We study the gravitational deflection of relativistic massive particles by Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) spacetimes (also known as a rotating source with a surface-like naked singularity), and a rotating Kerr-like wormholes. Based on the recent article [K. Jusufi, Phys. Rev. D 98, 064017 (2018)], we extend some of these results by exploring the effects of naked singularity and Kerr-like objects on the deflection of particles. We start by introducing coordinate transformation leading to an isotropic line element which gives the refraction index of light for the corresponding optical medias. On th…
In this letter, we use a recent wormhole solution known as a ringhole [Gonzalez-Diaz, Phys.\ Rev.\ D {\bf 54}, 6122, 1996] to determine the surface topology and the deflection angle of light in the weak limit approximation using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem (GBT). We apply the GBT and show that the surface topology at the wormhole throat is indeed a torus by computing the Euler characteristic number. As a special case of the ringhole solution, one can find the Ellis wormhole which has the surface topology of a 2-sphere at the wormhole throat. The most interesting results of this paper concerns the…
In this paper, we present the weak deflection angle in a Schwarzschild black hole of mass $m$ surrounded by the dark matter of mass $M$ and thickness $Δr_{s}$. The Gauss-Bonnet theorem, formulated for asymptotic spacetimes, is found to be ill-behaved in the third-order of $1/Δr_{s}$ for very large $Δr_{s}$. Using the finite-distance for the radial locations of the source and the receiver, we derived the expression for the weak deflection angle up to the third-order of $1/Δr_{s}$ using Ishihara (\textit{et al.}) method. The result showed that the required dark matter thickness is $\sim2\sqrt{3m…
Static, spherically symmetric black holes and compact objects without an event horizon have unstable (stable) circular orbits of a light called photon (antiphoton) sphere. A Damour-Solodukhin wormhole has been suggested as a simple black hole mimicker and the difference of its metric tensors from a black hole is described by a dimensionless parameter $λ$. The wormhole with two flat regions has two photon spheres and an antiphoton sphere for $λ<\sqrt{2}/2$ and a photon sphere for $λ\geq \sqrt{2}/2$. When the parameter $λ$ is $\sqrt{2}/2$, the photon sphere is marginally unstable because of dege…
The principal objective of this project is to investigate the gravitational lensing by asymptotically flat black holes in the framework of Horndeski theory in weak field limits. To achieve this objective, we utilize the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the optical geometry of asymptotically flat black holes and apply the Gibbons-Werner technique to achieve the deflection angle of photons in weak field limits. Subsequently, we manifest the influence of plasma medium on deflection of photons by asymptotically flat black holes in the context of Horndeski theory. We also examine the graphical impact of def…
Based on the Jacobi metric method, this paper studies the deflection of a charged massive particle by a novel four-dimensional charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole. We focus on the weak field approximation and consider the deflection angle with finite distance effects. To this end, we use a geometric and topological method, which is to apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the Jacobi space to calculate the deflection angle. We find that the deflection angle contains a pure gravitational contribution $δ_g$, a pure electrostatic $δ_c$ and a gravitational-electrostatic coupling term $δ_{gc}$. We …
We present formal expressions for the optical scalars in terms of the curvature scalars in the weak gravitational lensing regime at second order in perturbations of a flat background without mentioning the extension of the lens or their shape. Also, by considering the thin lens approximation for static and axially symmetric configurations we obtain an expression for the second-order deflection angle which generalizes our previous result presented in [Phys.Rev.D 83:083007 (2011)]. As applications of these formulas we compute the optical scalars for some known family of metrics and we recover ex…
Gravitational waves (GWs) produce small distortions in the observable distribution of stars in the sky. We describe the characteristic pattern of astrometric deflections created by a specific gravitational waveform called a burst with memory. Memory is a permanent, residual distortion of space left in the wake of GWs. We demonstrate that the astrometric effects of GW memory are qualitatively distinct from those of more broadly considered, oscillatory GWs---distinct in ways with potentially far-reaching observational implications. We discuss some such implications pertaining to the random-walk …
In this paper, we study the weak gravitational deflection angle of relativistic massive particles by the Kerr-like black hole in the bumblebee gravity model. In particular, we focus on weak field limits and calculate the deflection angle for a receiver and source at a finite distance from the lens. To this end, we use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem of a two-dimensional surface defined by a generalized Jacobi metric. The spacetime is asymptotically non-flat due to the existence of a bumblebee vector field. Thus the deflection angle is modified and can be divided into three parts: the surface integral…
The purpose of this article is twofold. First, we extend the results presented in [Gabriel Crisnejo and Emanuel Gallo, Phys.Rev.D 97, 124016 (2018)] to stationary spacetimes. Specifically, we show that the Gauss-Bonnet theorem can be applied to describe the deflection angle of light rays in plasma media in stationary spacetimes. Second, by using a correspondence between the motion of light rays in a cold non magnetized plasma and relativistic test massive particles we show that this technique is not only powerful to obtain the leading order behavior of the deflection angle of massive/massless …
The deflection of a ray of light passing close to a gravitational mass, is generally calculated from the null geodesic which the light ray (photon) follows. However, there is an alternate approach, where the effect of gravitation on the ray of light is estimated by considering the ray to be passing through a material medium. Calculations have been done in this paper, following the later approach, to estimate the amount of deflection due to a static non-rotating mass. The refractive index of such a material medium has been calculated in a more rigorous manner in the present work and the final v…
In this review, various researches on finding the bending angle of light deflected by a massive gravitating object which regard the Gauss-Bonnet theorem as the premise have been revised. Primarily, the Gibbons and Werner method is studied apropos of the gravitational lensing phenomenon in the weak field limits. Some exclusive instances are deliberated while calculating the deflection angle, beginning with the finite-distance corrections on non-asymptotically flat spacetimes. Effects of plasma medium is then inspected to observe its contribution to the deflection angle. Finally, the Jacobi metr…
In this paper, we study light rays in a Kazakov-Solodukhin black hole. To this end, we use the optical geometry of the Kazakov-Solodukhin black hole within the Gauss-bonnet theorem. We first show the effect of the deformation parameter $a$ on the Gaussian optical curvature, and then we use the modern method popularized by Gibbons and Werner to calculate the weak deflection angle of light. Our calculations of deflection angle show how gravitational lensing is affected by the deformation parameter $a$. Moreover, we demonstrate the effect of a plasma medium on weak gravitational lensing by the Ka…
\begin{abstract} Using the Keeton and Petters approach, we determine the deflection angle. We also investigate the motion of photons around a parameterized black hole in the presence of non-magnetized cold plasma by using a new ray-tracing algorithm. In spherically symmetric spacetime, we examine the influence of the plasma by applying the Hamiltonian equation on the deflection angle as well as shadow. It is examine to derive the rays analytically from Hamilton's equation by separating the metric and the plasma frequency. We study that the presence of plasma affects the deflection angle as wel…
The trajectory deflection and gravitational-electromagnetic dual lensing (GEL) of charged signal in general charged static and spherically symmetric spacetimes are considered in this work. We showed that the perturbative approach previously developed for neutral particles can be extended to the electromagnetic interaction case. The deflection angle still takes a (quasi-)series form and the finite distance effect of both the source and observer can be taken into account. Comparing to pure gravitational case, the apparent angles of the images in the GEL, their magnifications and time delay all r…
The surface density $Σ$-map and the convergence $κ$-map of Bullet Cluster 1E0657-558 show that the center of baryonic matters separates from the center of gravitational force, and the distribution of gravitational force do not possess spherical symmetry. This hints that a modified gravity with difference to Newtonian inverse-square law at large scale, and less symmetry is worth investigating. In this paper, we study the dynamics in Randers-Finsler spacetime. The Newtonian limit and gravitational deflection of light in a Rindler-type potential is focused in particular. It is shown that the conv…
The deflection angle of a light ray can be arbitrarily large near a light sphere. The time-symmetrical shape of light curves of a pair of light rays reflected by a light sphere of a lens object does not depend on the details of the lens object. We consider retrolensing light curves of sunlight with deflection angles $π$ and $3π$ by an Ellis wormhole, which is the simplest Morris-Thorne wormhole. If an Ellis wormhole with a throat parameter $a=10^{11}$ km is $100$ pc away from an observer and if the Ellis wormhole, the observer, and the sun are aligned perfectly in this order, the apparent magn…
We investigate the Lorentz symmetry breaking effects (LSBE) on the deflection of light by a rotating cosmic string spacetime in the weak limit approximation. We first calculate the deflection angle by a static cosmic string for a fixed spacelike 4-vector case (FSL) with the corresponding effective-string optical metric using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem (GBT). Then, we focus on a more general scenario, namely we calculate the deflection angle by a rotating cosmic string applying the GBT to Randers effective-string metric. We obtain a significant modification in the deflection angle because of the …
