We investigate possible quantum gravity (QG) effects on the gravitational deflection of light. Two forms of deformation of the Schwarzschild spacetime are proposed. The first ansatz is a given Finslerian line element, it could be regarded as a weak QG effect on the Schwarzschild spacetime. Starting from this ansatz, we deduce the deflection angle of the light ray which passes a weak gravitational source. The second ansatz could be regarded as a strong QG effect on the Schwarzschild spacetime. The deflection angle of the light ray which passes a weak gravitational source is deduced in this Riemannian spacetime. This QG effect may distinguish the mixed light rays in the absence of gravitational source by a "spectroscope" (the gravitational source). The solutions of gravitational field equation in this Riemannian spacetime indicate that the QG effect could be regarded as the vacuum energy and the energy density of vacuum is related to the spacetime deformation parameter.
A novel approach to the calculation of the deflection of highly relativistic test particles in gravitational fields is described. We make use of the light-like boosts of the gravitational fields of the sources. Examples are given of the deflection of highly relativistic particles in the Schwarzschild and Kerr gravitational fields, in the field of a static, axially symmetric, multipole source and in the field of a cosmic string. The deflection of spinning particles is also discussed.
The new method of invariant definition of the measurable angle of light deflection in the static central symmetric gravitational field is suggested. The predicted pure gravitational contribution to the deflection angle slightly differs from its classical estimate and one may hope that this discrepancy could be experimentally detected in the near future. The helicity modification of light polarization which is induced by the gravitational deflection from a classical heavy rotating body, like a star or a planet, is considered. The expression of the helicity asymmetry is derived; this asymmetry signals the gravitationally induced spin transfer from the rotating body to the scattered photons.
We examine a class of charged black holes in scalar-tensor gravity as gravitational lenses. We find the deflection angle in the strong deflection limit, from which we obtain the positions and the magnifications of the relativistic images. We compare our results with those corresponding to the Reissner-Norstrom spacetime and we analyze the observational aspects in the case of the Galactic supermassive black hole.
Expression for second post-Newtonian level gravitational deflection angle of massive particles is obtained in a model independent framework. Several of its important implications including the possibility of testing gravitational theories at that level are discussed.
Observations of gravitational lenses in strong gravitational fields give us a clue to understanding dark compact objects. In this paper, we extend a method to obtain a deflection angle in a strong deflection limit provided by Bozza [Phys. Rev. D 66, 103001 (2002)] to apply to ultrastatic spacetimes. We also discuss on the order of an error term in the deflection angle. Using the improved method, we consider gravitational lensing by an Ellis wormhole, which is an ultrastatic wormhole of the Morris-Thorne class.
Using the geodesic method and the perturbative approach, we study the deflection of light by time-periodic spherically symmetric gravitational fields. Assuming the weakness of the gravitational field, we derive general formulas that determine the deflection angle in the leading order approximation. The formulas are valid for both time-periodic and static metrics. Using these results, we calculate the deflection angle of a light ray passing through a spherically symmetric oscillating distribution of a self-gravitating scalar field with a logarithmic potential. It turned out that in this case th…
The objective of this paper is to analyze the weak deflection angle of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the presence of plasma medium. To attain our results, we implement the Gibbons and Werner approach and use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to Einstein gravity to acquire the resulting deflection angle of photon's ray in the weak field limit. Moreover, we illustrate the behavior of plasma medium and non-plasma mediums on the deflection of photon's ray in the framework of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Similarly, we observe the graphical influences of deflection angle on Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity…
Explicit expressions for the bending angle of light deflection arising from phenomenologically deformed black-hole metrics, subject to possible weak and strong quantum gravity effects, respectively, are obtained, by a highly effective method. The accuracy and effectiveness of these expressions are then illustrated by numerically solving the differential equation governing the deflection angle directly in the weak quantum effect situation.
In this paper, the gravitational deflection of relativistic massive particles up to the second post-Minkowskian order by static and spherically symmetric wormholes is investigated in the weak-field limit. These wormholes include the Janis-Newman-Winicour wormhole, a class of zero Ricci scalar scalar-tensor wormholes, and a class of charged Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton wormholes. With the Jacobi metric approach, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem is employed to study the gravitational deflection. In this scheme, the deflection angle as a topological effect is considered. Moreover, we analyze the influence of…
The conformal gravity fit to observed galactic rotation curves requires γ>0. On the other hand, conventional method for light deflection by galaxies gives a negative contribution to Schwarzschild value for γ>0, which is contrary to observation. Thus, it is very important that the contribution to bending should in principle be positive, no matter how small its magnitude is. Here we show that the Rindler-Ishak method gives a positive contribution to Schwarzschild deflection for γ>0, as desired. We also obtain the exact local coupling term derived earlier by Sereno. These results indicate that co…
The fact that the gravitation could deflect the light trajectory has been confirmed by a large number of observation data, that is consistent with the result calculated by Einstein's gravity. F(R)-gravity is the modification of Einstein's gravity. According to the field equations obtained by the action of the f(R) form, we get a similar Schwarzschild metric. According to the condition that four-dimension momenta of the photon return to zero and that of conservation of covariant momenta, we obtain the equation of motion of the photon in a specific form of f (R)-gravity. We solve the equation to…
In order to clarify effects of the finite distance from a lens object to a light source and a receiver, the gravitational deflection of light has been recently reexamined by using the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) theorem in differential geometry [Ishihara et al. 2016]. The purpose of the present paper is to give a short review of a series of works initiated by the above paper. First, we provide the definition of the gravitational deflection angle of light for the finite-distance source and receiver in a static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat spacetime. We discuss the geometrical invariance…
Gravitational waves (GWs) produce small distortions in the observable distribution of stars in the sky. We describe the characteristic pattern of astrometric deflections created by a specific gravitational waveform called a burst with memory. Memory is a permanent, residual distortion of space left in the wake of GWs. We demonstrate that the astrometric effects of GW memory are qualitatively distinct from those of more broadly considered, oscillatory GWs---distinct in ways with potentially far-reaching observational implications. We discuss some such implications pertaining to the random-walk …
We derive the light deflection caused by the screw dislocation in space-time. The derivation is based on the idea that space-time is a medium which can be deformed by gravity and that the deformation of space-time is equivalent to the existence of gravity.
The deflection of a ray of light passing close to a gravitational mass, is generally calculated from the null geodesic which the light ray (photon) follows. However, there is an alternate approach, where the effect of gravitation on the ray of light is estimated by considering the ray to be passing through a material medium. Calculations have been done in this paper, following the later approach, to estimate the amount of deflection due to a static non-rotating mass. The refractive index of such a material medium has been calculated in a more rigorous manner in the present work and the final v…
The surface density $Σ$-map and the convergence $κ$-map of Bullet Cluster 1E0657-558 show that the center of baryonic matters separates from the center of gravitational force, and the distribution of gravitational force do not possess spherical symmetry. This hints that a modified gravity with difference to Newtonian inverse-square law at large scale, and less symmetry is worth investigating. In this paper, we study the dynamics in Randers-Finsler spacetime. The Newtonian limit and gravitational deflection of light in a Rindler-type potential is focused in particular. It is shown that the conv…
In this paper, we study the weak gravitational deflection angle of relativistic massive particles by the Kerr-like black hole in the bumblebee gravity model. In particular, we focus on weak field limits and calculate the deflection angle for a receiver and source at a finite distance from the lens. To this end, we use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem of a two-dimensional surface defined by a generalized Jacobi metric. The spacetime is asymptotically non-flat due to the existence of a bumblebee vector field. Thus the deflection angle is modified and can be divided into three parts: the surface integral…
A modified Hayward black hole is a nonsingular black hole. It is proposed to form when the pressure generated by quantum gravity can stop matter's collapse as the matter reaches Planck density. Strong deflection gravitational lensing happening nearby its event horizon might provide some clues of these quantum effects in its central core. We investigate observables of the strong deflection lensing, including angular separations, brightness differences and time delays between its relativistic images, and estimate their values for the supermassive black hole in the Galactic center. We find that i…
We apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the study of light rays in a plasma medium in a static and spherically symmetric gravitational field and also to the study of timelike geodesics followed for test massive particles in a spacetime with the same symmetries. The possibility of using the theorem follows from a correspondence between timelike curves followed by light rays in a plasma medium and spatial geodesics in an associated Riemannian optical metric. A similar correspondence follows for massive particles. For some examples and applications, we compute the deflection angle in weak gravitatio…
We calculate the deflection angle of light from a distant source by a galaxy cluster in Weyl's conformal gravity. The general method of calculation is first applied to calculate the deflection angle in Schwarzschild-de Sitter (Kottler) spacetime. The deflection angle calculated in Kottler spacetime includes the contribution of the cosmological constant, which quantitatively agrees with one work and disagrees with many works in the literature. We then calculate the deflection angle in Mannheim-Kazanas spacetime in two conformally related coordinate systems and find that the result includes cont…
We consider gravitational lensing under a weak-field approximation and in a strong deflection limit by a Bronnikov-Kim wormhole with the same metric as the one of a wormhole which has been suggested in Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell theory. The metric approaches into the metric of an extreme charged Reissner-Nordström black hole in a black hole limit and it becomes the metric of an spatial Schwarzschild wormhole in an ultrastatic limit. In both of the black hole limit and the ultrastatic limit, the coefficient of a divergent term and the constant term of the deflection angle of a light in the strong d…
The exact metric of a moving Kerr black hole with an arbitrary constant velocity is derived in Kerr-Schild coordinates. We then calculate the null equatorial gravitational deflection caused by a radially moving Kerr source up to the second post-Minkowskian order, acting as an application of the weak field limit of the metric. The bending angle of light is found to be consistent with the result given in the previous works.
The gravitational deflection of light ray is an important prediction of General Theory of Relativity. In this paper we develop analytical expression of the deflection of light ray without any weak field approximation due to a charged gravitational body represented by Reissner_Nordström (RN) and Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) space time geometry, using material medium approach. It is concluded that although both the geometries represent the charged, non-rotating, spherically symmetric gravitating body, but the effect of charge on the gravitational deflection is just opposite to each other. The gra…
We study the impact of relativistic gravitational deflection of light on the accuracy of future Space Interferometry Mission (SIM). We estimate the deflection angles caused by the monopole, quadrupole and octupole components of gravitational fields for a number of celestial bodies in the solar system. We observe that, in many cases, the magnitude of the corresponding effects is significantly larger than the 1 uas accuracy expected from SIM. This fact argues for the development of a relativistic observational model for the mission that would account for the influence of both static and time-var…
We consider the problem of gravitational deflection of a propagating relativistic massive particles by rotating black holes (Kerr black holes) and rotating wormholes (Teo wormholes) in the weak limit approximation. In particular we have introduced an alternative way to calculate the deflection angle for massive particles based on the refractive index of the optical media and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem applied to the isotropic optical metrics. The refractive index governing the propagation of massive particles is calculated by considering those particles as a de Broglie wave packets. Finally appl…
A Simpson-Visser spacetime has two nonnegative parameters $a$ and $m$ and its metric is correspond with (i) a Schwarzschild metric for $a=0$ and $m\neq0$, (ii) a regular black hole metric for $a<2m$, (iii) a one-way traversable wormhole metric for $a=2m$, (vi) a two-way traversable wormhole metric for $a>2m$, and (v) an Ellis-Bronnikov wormhole metric for $a\neq0$ and $m=0$. The spacetime is one of the most useful spacetimes for the purpose of comprehensively understanding gravitational lensing of light rays reflected by a photon sphere of black holes and wormholes. We have investigated gravit…
Spin of a test particle is a fundamental property that can affect its motion in a gravitational field. In this work we consider the effect of particle spin on its deflection angle and gravitational lensing in the equatorial plane of arbitrary stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes. To do this we developed a perturbative method that can be applied to spinning signals with arbitrary asymptotic velocity and takes into account the finite distance effect of the source and the observer. The deflection angle $Δφ$ and total travel time $Δt$ are expressed as (quasi-)power series whose coefficients are …
In this work are reviewed several aspects of gravitational lensing produced by astrophysical bodies that strongly curve the spacetime in their vicinity. When an object with a photon sphere (e.g. a black hole) is interposed between a source and an observer, in addition to primary and secondary images due to small deflections of the light rays, there are two infinite sets of images called relativistic, produced by light passing close to the photon sphere, which undergoes a large deflection. The positions and magnifications of relativistic images can be obtained numerically or analytically, in th…
We investigate gravitational lensing by a photon sphere in a Reissner-Nordström naked singularity spacetime in strong deflection limits. Because of the nonexistence of an event horizon and the existence of a potential barrier near an antiphoton sphere, infinite numbers of images slightly inside and outside of a photon sphere can appear. We obtain the analytic expressions of the factors of logarithmic divergent terms and the constant terms of the deflection angles in the strong deflection limits not only the for the little outside but also the barely inside of the photon sphere without Taylor e…
The trajectory deflection and gravitational-electromagnetic dual lensing (GEL) of charged signal in general charged static and spherically symmetric spacetimes are considered in this work. We showed that the perturbative approach previously developed for neutral particles can be extended to the electromagnetic interaction case. The deflection angle still takes a (quasi-)series form and the finite distance effect of both the source and observer can be taken into account. Comparing to pure gravitational case, the apparent angles of the images in the GEL, their magnifications and time delay all r…
A charged black hole was predicted by the Einstein--Horndeski--Maxwell theory. In order to provide its observational signatures, we investigate its weak and strong deflection gravitational lensings. We find its weak deflection lensing observables, including the positions, magnifications and differential time delay of the lensed images. We also obtain its strong deflection lensing observables, including the apparent radius of the photon sphere as well as the angular separation, brightness difference and differential time delay between the relativistic images. Taking the supermassive black hole …
Recent studies suggest that the cosmological constant affects the gravitational bending of photons although the orbital equation for light in Schwarzschild-de Sitter space time is free from cosmological constant. Here we argued that the very notion of cosmological constant independency of photon orbit in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter space time is not proper. Consequently the cosmological constant has some clear contribution to the deflection angle of light rays. We stressed the importance of the study of photon trajectories from the reference objects in bending calculation, particularly for asy…

In this paper, the homotopy-perturbation method (HPM) is applied to obtain approximate analytical solutions for the gravitational deflection of light in General Relativity near Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by quintessence (Kiselev black hole). In order to demonstrate that HPM is able to yield acceptable solutions for the null-geodesics with easily computable terms, the HPM is tested for the simple examples of spherically symmetric spacetimes such as Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes. After that, the null-geodesics of light passing the vicinity of Kiselev black hole are st…
We show that in the weak field limit the light deflection alone cannot distinguish between different $R + F[g(\square)R]$ models of gravity, where $F$ and $g$ are arbitrary functions. This does not imply, however, that in all these theories an observer will see the same deflection angle. Owed to the need to calibrate the Newton constant, the deflection angle may be model-dependent after all necessary types of measurements are taken into account.
In this article, we extend the strong deflection limit to calculate the deflection angle for a class of geometries which are asymptotically locally flat. In particular, we study the deflection of light in the surroundings of spherical black holes in Einstein-Skyrme theory. We find the deflection angle in this limit, from which we obtain the positions and the magnifications of the relativistic images. We compare our results with those corresponding to the Schwarzschild and the global monopole (Barriola-Vilenkin) spacetimes.
We analytically investigate the shadows cast by rotating black holes in the asymptotically safe gravity (ASG) by deriving complete null geodesics and observables using the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and Carter separable method. It turns out that the apparent shape and size of the shadow depend on the ASG parameters ($ζ, γ$) in addition to other black hole parameters ($M, a$). The size of black hole shadows monotonically decreases and shadows get more distorted with increasing values of ASG parameters when compared with the Kerr black hole shadows. In turn, we use shadow observables to estimate b…
In this work we extend the approach used in [Emanuel Gallo and Osvaldo M. Moreschi, Phys. Rev. D 83, 12 083007 (2011)] to the study of weak gravitational lensing in a plasma medium. First, we present expressions for the deflection angle and optical scalars in terms of the components of the energy-momentum tensor for spherically symmetric lenses surrounded by a cold non-magnetized plasma. Second, we show that the same expressions can be deduced using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Finally, we establish a correspondence between the spatial orbits of photons in a non-homogeneous plasma and the non-geo…
Based on the 4D momentum, the influence of quintessence on the gravitational frequency shift and the deflection of light are examined in modified Schwarzschild space. We find that the frequency of photon depends on the state parameter of quintessence $w_q$: the frequency increases for $-1<w_q<-1/3$ and decreases for $-1/3<w_q<0$. Meanwhile, we adopt an integral power number $a$ ($a = 3ω_q + 2$) to solve the orbital equation of photon. The photon's potentials become higher with the decrease of $ω_q$. The behavior of bending light depends on the state parameter $ω_q$ sensitively. In particular, …
In this paper, we study the weak gravitational deflection of relativistic massive particles for a receiver and source at finite distance from the lens in stationary, axisymmetric and asymptotically flat spacetimes. For this purpose, we extend the generalized optical metric method to the generalized Jacobi metric method by using the Jacobi-Maupertuis Randers-Finsler metric. More specifically,we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the generalized Jacobi metric space and then obtain an expression for calculating the deflection angle, which is related to Gaussian curvature of generalized optical met…
In this paper, we use the Gauss Bonnet theorem to obtain the deflection angle by the photons coupled to Weyl tensor in a Schwarzschild black hole and Schwarzschild-like black hole in bumblebee gravity in the weak limit approximation. To do so, we first calculate the corresponding optical metrics, and then we find the Gaussian curvature to use in Gauss-Bonnet theorem, which is first done by Gibbons and Werner. Hence, in the leading order terms we show the deflection angle, that is affected by the coupling between the photon and Weyl tensor, and there is a deviation from the deflecting angle as …
Light deflection in the post-linear gravitational field of two bounded point-like masses is treated. Both the light source and the observer are assumed to be located at infinity in an asymptotically flat space. The equations of light propagation are explicitly integrated to the second order in $G/c^2$. Some of the integrals are evaluated by making use of an expansion in powers of the ratio of the relative separation distance to the impact parameter $(r_{12}/ξ)$. A discussion of which orders must be retained to be consistent with the expansion in terms of $G/c^2$ is given. It is shown that the …
Gravitational lensing inside and outside of a marginally unstable photon sphere in a general, static, spherically symmetric, and asymptotically-flat spacetime in strong deflection limits
