We propose a perturbative method to compute the deflection angle of both null and massive particles for source and detector at finite distance. This method applies universally to the motion of particles with general velocity in the equatorial plane of stationary axisymmetric spacetimes or static spherical symmetric spacetimes that are asymptotically flat. The resultant deflection angle automatically arranges into a quasi-inverse series form of the impact parameter, with coefficients depending on the metric functions, the signal velocity and the source and detector locations through the apparent angles. In the large impact parameter limit, the series coefficients are reduced to rational functions of sine/cosine functions of the zero order apparent angle.
Geodesics of both lightrays and timelike particles with nonzero mass are deflected in a gravitational field. In this work we apply the perturbative method developed in Ref. \cite{Jia:2020dap} to compute the deflection angle of both null and timelike rays in the weak field limit for four spacetimes. We obtained the deflection angles for the Bardeen spacetime to the eleventh order of $m/b$ where $m$ is the ADM mass and $b$ is the impact parameter, and for the Hayward, Janis-Newman-Winicour and Einstein-Born-Infeld spacetimes to the ninth, seventh and eleventh order respectively. The effect of th…
Both null and timelike rays experience trajectory bending in a gravitational field. In this work, we systematically develop a perturbative method to compute the deflection angle of rays with general velocity $v$ in arbitrary static and spherically symmetric spacetimes and in equatorial plane of arbitrary static and axisymmetric spacetimes. We show that the expansion in the large closest approach $x_0$ limit depends on the asymptotic behavior of the metric functions only, and the generated integrand is always integrable, resulting in a deflection angle in a series form of either $x_0$ or $b$, t…
A perturbative method to compute the deflection angle of both timelike and null rays in arbitrary static and spherically symmetric spacetimes in the strong field limit is proposed. The result takes a quasi-series form of $(1-b_c/b)$ where $b$ is the impact parameter and $b_c$ is its critical value, with coefficients of the series explicitly given. This result also naturally takes into account the finite distance effect of both the source and detector, and allows to solve the apparent angles of the relativistic images in a more precise way. From this, the BH angular shadow size is expressed as …
Using a perturbative technique, in this work we study the deflection of null and timelike signals in the extended Einstein-Maxwell spacetime, the Born-Infeld gravity and the charged Ellis-Bronnikov (CEB) spacetime in the weak field limit. The deflection angles are found to take a (quasi-)series form of the impact parameter, and automatically takes into account the finite distance effect of the source and observer. The method is also applied to find the deflections in CEB spacetime with arbitrary dimension. It's shown that to the leading non-trivial order, the deflection in some $n$-dimensional…
Using the geodesic method and the perturbative approach, we study the deflection of light by time-periodic spherically symmetric gravitational fields. Assuming the weakness of the gravitational field, we derive general formulas that determine the deflection angle in the leading order approximation. The formulas are valid for both time-periodic and static metrics. Using these results, we calculate the deflection angle of a light ray passing through a spherically symmetric oscillating distribution of a self-gravitating scalar field with a logarithmic potential. It turned out that in this case th…
Various authors have investigated the problem of light deflection by radially moving gravitational lenses - with inconsistent results. In this paper we generalize the calculations for arbitrary lens velocities and show that, to first order in the lens velocity v, the deflection angles scales with 1-v. We discuss the seeming inconsistency of relativistic light deflection with the classical picture of moving test particles by generalizing the lens effect to test particles of arbitrary velocity, including light as a limiting case. We show that the effect of radial motion of the lens is very diffe…
Recently, we proposed an enhancement of the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli formalism for first-order perturbations about a Schwarzschild background that includes first-order corrections due to the background black-hole spin. Using this formalism, we investigate gravitational wave recoil effects from a spinning black-hole binary system analytically. This allows us to better understand the origin of the large recoils observed in full numerical simulation of spinning black hole binaries.
Spin of a test particle is a fundamental property that can affect its motion in a gravitational field. In this work we consider the effect of particle spin on its deflection angle and gravitational lensing in the equatorial plane of arbitrary stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes. To do this we developed a perturbative method that can be applied to spinning signals with arbitrary asymptotic velocity and takes into account the finite distance effect of the source and the observer. The deflection angle $Δφ$ and total travel time $Δt$ are expressed as (quasi-)power series whose coefficients are …
The trajectory deflection and gravitational-electromagnetic dual lensing (GEL) of charged signal in general charged static and spherically symmetric spacetimes are considered in this work. We showed that the perturbative approach previously developed for neutral particles can be extended to the electromagnetic interaction case. The deflection angle still takes a (quasi-)series form and the finite distance effect of both the source and observer can be taken into account. Comparing to pure gravitational case, the apparent angles of the images in the GEL, their magnifications and time delay all r…

Applying the perturbative approach to geodesic equations, we study motion of the test particles in time-dependent spherically symmetric spacetimes created by oscillating dark matter. Assuming the weakness of the gravitational field, we derive general formulas that describe infinite trajectories of the test particles and determine the total deflection angle in the leading order approximation. The obtained formulas are valid for both time-dependent and static matter configurations. Using these results, we calculate the deflection angle of a test particle passing through a spherically symmetric o…
The deflection and gravitational lensing of light and massive particles in arbitrary static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically (anti-)de Sitter spacetimes are considered in this work. We first proved that for spacetimes whose metric satisfying certain conditions, the deflection of null rays with fixed closest distance will not depend on the cosmological constant $Λ$, while that of timelike signals and the apparent angle in gravitational lensing still depend on $Λ$. A two-step perturbative method is then developed to compute the change of the angular coordinate and total travel time in t…
In this work we study the deflection and gravitational lensing of null and timelike signals in the Kiselev spacetime in the weak field limit, to investigate the effects of the equation of state parameter $ω$ and the matter amount parameter $α$. In doing this, we extend a perturbative method previously developed for asymptotically flat spacetimes whose metric functions have integer-power asymptotic expansions to the case that may or may not be asymptotically flat but with non-integer power expansions. It is found that in the asymptotically flat case ($-1/3<ω<0$) the deflection angles are expres…
We present a simple prescription for the rotation of polarization produced by a relativistically moving gravitational lens, applicable to arbitrary deflection angle and arbitrary velocity of the lens. When geometric optics is applicable, two independent components contribute to the total rotation of polarization: (i) in the frame of the lens the polarization vector experiences minimal rotation defined by the deflection angle (as measured by a set of remote observers, or no rotation if defined in terms of parallel-propagated tetrad); (ii) the effect of the motion of the lens on the polarization…
We derive angle differences between two null geodesics, propagating from light sources to an observer, on the de Sitter spacetime with multi-lensing objects. Assuming the lensing objects are mass monopoles on the de Sitter background, we derive the metric tensor by solving the Einstein equation perturbatively. On that spacetime, we solve a null geodesic parametrized by the coordinate time. Using the null geodesics, we define the angle differences in a coordinate invariant way. We take in the relativistic effects up to the first order of perturbation and clarify the magnitude of approximation e…
We calculate the deflection angle, as well as the positions and magnifications of the lensed images, in the case of covariant $f(T)$ gravity. We first extract the spherically symmetric solutions for both the pure-tetrad and the covariant formulation of the theory, since considering spherical solutions the extension to the latter is crucial, in order for the results not to suffer from frame-dependent artifacts. Applying the weak-field, perturbative approximation we extract the deviations of the solutions comparing to General Relativity. Furthermore, we calculate the deflection angle and then th…
As an extension of our previous paper, instead of the total deflection angle $α$, we will mainly focus on discussing the measurable angle of the light ray $ψ$ at the position of the observer in Kerr--de Sitter spacetime which includes the cosmological constant $Λ$. We will investigate the contributions of the radial and transverse motions of the observer which are connected with the radial velocity $v^r$ and transverse velocity $bv^ϕ$ ($b$ is the impact parameter) as well as the spin parameter $a$ of the central object which induces the gravitomagnetic field or frame dragging and the cosmologi…
We study non-perturbatively the effect of the deflection angle on the BAO wiggles of the matter power spectrum in real space. We show that from redshift z~2 this introduces a dispersion of roughly 1 Mpc at BAO scale, which corresponds approximately to a 1% effect. The lensing effect induced by the deflection angle, which is completely geometrical and survey independent, smears out the BAO wiggles. The effect on the power spectrum amplitude at BAO scale is about 0.1% for z~2 and 0.2% for z~4. We compare the smoothing effects induced by the lensing potential and non-linear structure formation, s…
Gravitational waves emitted from a generic binary black-hole merger carry away linear momentum anisotropically, resulting in a gravitational recoil, or "kick", of the center of mass. For certain merger configurations the time evolution of the magnitude of the kick velocity has a local maximum followed by a sudden drop. Perturbative studies of this "antikick" in a limited range of black hole spins have found that the antikick decreases for retrograde orbits as a function of negative spin. We analyze this problem using a recently developed code to evolve gravitational perturbations from a point-…
