A proof for the lower bound is provided for the smallest eigenvalue of finite element equations with arbitrary conforming simplicial meshes. The bound has a similar form as the one by Graham and McLean [SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 44 (2006), pp. 1487--1513] but doesn't require any mesh regularity assumptions, neither global nor local. In particular, it is valid for highly adaptive, anisotropic, or non-regular meshes without any restrictions. In three and more dimensions, the bound depends only on the number of degrees of freedom $N$ and the Hölder mean $M_{1-d/2} (\lvert \tildeω \rvert / \lvert ω_i \lvert)$ taken to the power $1-2/d$, $\lvert \tildeω \rvert$ and $\lvert ω_i \rvert$ denoting the average mesh patch volume and the volume of the patch corresponding to the $i^{\text{th}}$ mesh node, respectively. In two dimensions, the bound depends on the number of degrees of freedom $N$ and the logarithmic term $(1 + \lvert \ln (N \lvert ω_{\min} \rvert) \rvert)$, $\lvert ω_{\min} \rvert$ denoting the volume of the smallest patch. Provided numerical examples demonstrate that the bound is more accurate and less dependent on the mesh non-uniformity than the previously available bounds.
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods are extensions of the usual Galerkin finite element methods. Although there are vast amount of studies on DG methods, most of them have assumed shape-regularity conditions on meshes for both theoretical error analysis and practical computations. In this paper, we present a new symmetric interior penalty DG scheme with a modified penalty term. We show that, without imposing the shape-regularity condition on the meshes, the new DG scheme inherits all of the good properties of standard DG methods, and is thus robust on anisotropic meshes. We consider the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for the integral fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$. We prove optimal Sobolev regularity estimates in Lipschitz domains provided the solution is $C^s$ up to the boundary. We present the construction of graded bisection meshes by a greedy algorithm and derive quasi-optimal convergence rates for approximations to the solution of such a problem by continuous piecewise linear functions. The nonlinear Sobolev scale dictates the relation between regularity and approximability.

In the context of numerical solution of PDEs, dynamic mesh redistribution methods (r-adaptive methods) are an important procedure for increasing the resolution in regions of interest, without modifying the connectivity of the mesh. Key to the success of these methods is that the mesh should be sufficiently refined (locally) and flexible in order to resolve evolving solution features, but at the same time not introduce errors through skewness and lack of regularity. Some state-of-the-art methods are bottom-up in that they attempt to prescribe both the local cell size and the alignment to featur…
We consider spectral mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element discretizations of the Lamé system of linear elasticity in polyhedral domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$. In order to resolve possible corner, edge, and corner-edge singularities, anisotropic geometric edge meshes consisting of hexahedral elements are applied. We perform a computational study on the discrete inf-sup stability of these methods, and especially focus on the robustness with respect to the Poisson ratio close to the incompressible limit (i.e. the Stokes system). Furthermore, under certain realistic assumptions (for analytic da…
In this work, following the discrete de Rham (DDR) approach, we develop a discrete counterpart of a two-dimensional de Rham complex with enhanced regularity. The proposed construction supports general polygonal meshes and arbitrary approximation orders. We establish exactness on a contractible domain for both the versions of the complex with and without boundary conditions and, for the former, prove a complete set of Poincaré-type inequalities. The discrete complex is then used to derive a novel discretisation method for a quad-rot problem which, unlike other schemes in the literature, does no…

This paper constructs two conforming finite element grad grad and elasticity complexes on the cuboid meshes. For the finite element grad grad complex, an $H^2$ conforming finite element space, an $\boldsymbol{H}(\operatorname{curl}; \mathbb{S})$ conforming finite element space, an $\boldsymbol{H}(\operatorname{div}; \mathbb{T})$ conforming finite element space and an $\boldsymbol{L}^2$ finite element space are constructed. Further, a finite element complex with reduced regularity is also constructed, whose degrees of freedom for the three diagonal components are coupled. For the finite element…
In this paper, we are concerned with the numerical solution for the two-dimensional time fractional Fokker-Planck equation with tempered fractional derivative of order $α$. Although some of its variants are considered in many recent numerical analysis papers, there are still some significant differences. Here we first provide the regularity estimates of the solution. And then a modified $L$1 scheme inspired by the middle rectangle quadrature formula on graded meshes is employed to compensate for the singularity of the solution at $t\rightarrow 0^{+}$, while the five-point difference scheme is …
A priori and a posteriori analysis of the discontinuous Galerkin approximation of the time-harmonic Maxwell's equations under minimal regularity assumptions
We present the design of a mesh quality indicator that can predict the behavior of the Virtual Element Method (VEM) on a given mesh family or finite sequence of polyhedral meshes (dataset). The mesh quality indicator is designed to measure the violation of the mesh regularity assumptions that are normally considered in the convergence analysis. We investigate the behavior of this new mathematical tool on the lowest-order conforming approximation of the three-dimensional Poisson equation. This work also assesses the convergence rate of the VEM when applied to very general polyhedral meshes, inc…
The nonconforming Morley-type virtual element method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations formulated in terms of the stream-function on simply connected polygonal domains (not necessarily convex) is designed. A rigorous analysis by using a new enriching operator is developed. More precisely, by employing such operator, we provide novel discrete Sobolev embeddings, which allow to establish the well-posedness of the discrete scheme and obtain optimal error estimates in broken $H^2$-, $H^1$- and $L^2$-norms under minimal regularity condition on the weak solution. The velocity and vortic…

We introduce a symmetric fractional-order reduction (SFOR) method to construct numerical algorithms on general nonuniform temporal meshes for semilinear fractional diffusion-wave equations. By using the novel order reduction method, the governing problem is transformed to an equivalent coupled system, where the explicit orders of time-fractional derivatives involved are all $α/2$ $(1<α<2)$. The linearized L1 scheme and Alikhanov scheme are then proposed on general time meshes. Under some reasonable regularity assumptions and weak restrictions on meshes, the optimal convergence is derived for t…
In this paper, a new $C^1$-conforming Petrov-Galerkin method for convection-diffusion equations is designed and analyzed. The trail space of the proposed method is a $C^1$-conforming ${\mathbb Q}_k$ (i.e., tensor product of polynomials of degree at most $k$) finite element space while the test space is taken as the $L^2$ (discontinuous) piecewise ${\mathbb Q}_{k-2}$ polynomial space. Existence and uniqueness of the numerical solution is proved and optimal error estimates in all $L^2, H^1, H^2$-norms are established. In addition, superconvergence properties of the new method are investigated an…
The lowest-order nonconforming virtual element extends the Morley triangular element to polygons for the approximation of the weak solution $u\in V:=H^2_0(Ω)$ to the biharmonic equation. The abstract framework allows (even a mixture of) two examples of the local discrete spaces $V_h(P)$ and a smoother allows rough source terms $F\in V^*=H^{-2}(Ω)$. The a priori and a posteriori error analysis in this paper circumvents any trace of second derivatives by some computable conforming companion operator $J:V_h\to V$ from the nonconforming virtual element space $V_h$. The operator $J$ is a right-inve…

We present an adaptive refinement algorithm for T-splines on unstructured 2D meshes. While for structured 2D meshes, one can refine elements alternatingly in horizontal and vertical direction, such an approach cannot be generalized directly to unstructured meshes, where no two unique global mesh directions can be assigned. To resolve this issue, we introduce the concept of direction indices, i.e., integers associated to each edge, which are inspired by theory on higher-dimensional structured T-splines. Together with refinement levels of edges, these indices essentially drive the refinement sch…

The conditioning of implicit Runge-Kutta (RK) integration for linear finite element approximation of diffusion equations on general anisotropic meshes is investigated. Bounds are established for the condition number of the resulting linear system with and without diagonal preconditioning for the implicit Euler and general implicit RK methods. Two solution strategies are considered for the linear system resulting from general implicit RK integration: the simultaneous solution (the system is solved as a whole) and a successive solution which follows the commonly used implementation of implicit R…
