In this paper the hp-version of the boundary element method is applied to the electric field integral equation on a piecewise plane (open or closed) Lipschitz surface. The underlying meshes are supposed to be quasi-uniform. We use H(div)-conforming discretisations with quadrilateral elements of Raviart-Thomas type and establish quasi-optimal convergence of hp-approximations. Main ingredient of our analysis is a new H^{-1/2}(div)-conforming p-interpolation operator that assumes only H^r \cap H^{-1/2}(div)-regularity (r > 0) and for which we show quasi-stability with respect to polynomial degrees.
In the present work, we consider weakly-singular integral equations arising from linear second-order strongly-elliptic PDE systems with constant coefficients, including, e.g., linear elasticity. We introduce a general framework for optimal convergence of adaptive Galerkin BEM. We identify certain abstract properties for the underlying meshes, the corresponding mesh-refinement strategy, and the ansatz spaces that guarantee convergence at optimal algebraic rate of an adaptive algorithm driven by the weighted-residual error. These properties are satisfied, e.g., for discontinuous piecewise polyno…
In this paper we prove a complete panel of consistency results for the discrete de Rham (DDR) complex introduced in the companion paper [D. A. Di Pietro and J. Droniou, An arbitrary-order discrete de Rham complex on polyhedral meshes. Part I: Exactness and Poincaré inequalities, 2021, submitted], including primal and adjoint consistency for the discrete vector calculus operators, and consistency of the corresponding potentials. The theoretical results are showcased by performing a full convergence analysis for a DDR approximation of a magnetostatics model. Numerical results on three-dimensiona…
In this work we analyze a virtual element method on polyhedral meshes for solving the sixth-order elliptic problem with simply supported boundary conditions. We apply the Ciarlet-Raviart arguments to introduce an auxiliary unknown $σ:=-Δ^2 u$ and to search the main uknown $u$ in the $H^2\cap H_0^1$ Sobolev space. The virtual element discretization is well possed on a $C^1\times C^0$ virtual element spaces. We also provide the convergence and error estimates results. Finally, we report a series of numerical tests to verify the performance of numerical scheme.

In this work, we develop a discretisation method for the mixed formulation of the magnetostatic problem supporting arbitrary orders and polyhedral meshes. The method is based on a global discrete de Rham (DDR) sequence, obtained by patching the local spaces constructed in [Di Pietro, Droniou, Rapetti, Fully discrete polynomial de Rham sequences of arbitrary degree on polygons and polyhedra, arXiv:1911.03616] by enforcing the single-valuedness of the components attached to the boundary of each element. The first main contribution of this paper is a proof of exactness relations for this global D…
The purpose of the present paper is to develop $C^1$ Virtual Elements in three dimensions for linear elliptic fourth order problems, motivated by the difficulties that standard conforming Finite Elements encounter in this framework. We focus the presentation on the lowest order case, the generalization to higher orders being briefly provided in the Appendix. The degrees of freedom of the proposed scheme are only 4 per mesh vertex, representing function values and gradient values. Interpolation error estimates for the proposed space are provided, together with a set of numerical tests to valida…
We present the design of a mesh quality indicator that can predict the behavior of the Virtual Element Method (VEM) on a given mesh family or finite sequence of polyhedral meshes (dataset). The mesh quality indicator is designed to measure the violation of the mesh regularity assumptions that are normally considered in the convergence analysis. We investigate the behavior of this new mathematical tool on the lowest-order conforming approximation of the three-dimensional Poisson equation. This work also assesses the convergence rate of the VEM when applied to very general polyhedral meshes, inc…

The prediction of a dielectric breakdown in a high-voltage device is based on criteria that evaluate the electric field along field lines. Therefore it is necessary to efficiently compute the electric field at arbitrary points in space. A boundary element method (BEM) based on an indirect formulation, realized with MPI-parallel collocation, has proven to cope very well with this requirement. It deploys surface meshes only, which are easy to generate even for complex industrial geometries. The assembly of the large dense BEM-matrix, as well as the iterative solution process of the resulting sys…
In this paper we present a novel arbitrary-order discrete de Rham (DDR) complex on general polyhedral meshes based on the decomposition of polynomial spaces into ranges of vector calculus operators and complements linked to the spaces in the Koszul complex. The DDR complex is fully discrete, meaning that both the spaces and discrete calculus operators are replaced by discrete counterparts, and satisfies suitable exactness properties depending on the topology of the domain. In conjunction with bespoke discrete counterparts of $L^2$-products, it can be used to design schemes for partial differen…
We consider the space-time boundary element method (BEM) for the heat equation with prescribed initial and Dirichlet data. We propose a residual-type a posteriori error estimator that is a lower bound and, up to weighted $L_2$-norms of the residual, also an upper bound for the unknown BEM error. The possibly locally refined meshes are assumed to be prismatic, i.e., their elements are tensor-products $J\times K$ of elements in time $J$ and space $K$. While the results do not depend on the local aspect ratio between time and space, assuming the scaling $|J| \eqsim {\rm diam}(K)^2$ for all elemen…
A simple but successful strategy for building a discrete diffusion operator in finite volume schemes of industrial use is to correct the standard two-point flux approximation with a term accounting for the local mesh non-orthogonality. Practical experience with a variety of different mesh typologies, including non-orthogonal tetrahedral, hexahedral and polyhedral meshes, has shown that this discrete diffusion operator is accurate and robust whenever the mesh is not too distorted and sufficiently regular. In this work, we show that this approach can be interpreted as equivalent to introducing a…
This paper introduces a novel method for the efficient and accurate computation of volume fractions on unstructured polyhedral meshes, where the phase boundary is an orientable hypersurface, implicitly given as the iso-contour of a sufficiently smooth level-set function. Locally, i.e. in each mesh cell, we compute a principal coordinate system in which the hypersurface can be approximated as the graph of an osculating paraboloid. A recursive application of the \textsc{Gaussian} divergence theorem then allows to analytically transform the volume integrals to curve integrals associated to the po…
Compatible Discrete Operator schemes preserve basic properties of the continuous model at the discrete level. They combine discrete differential operators that discretize exactly topological laws and discrete Hodge operators that approximate constitutive relations. We devise and analyze two families of such schemes for the Stokes equations in curl formulation, with the pressure degrees of freedom located at either mesh vertices or cells. The schemes ensure local mass and momentum conservation. We prove discrete stability by establishing novel discrete Poincaré inequalities. Using commutators r…
Solutions to the wave equation in the exterior of a polyhedral domain or a screen in $\mathbb{R}^3$ exhibit singular behavior from the edges and corners. We present quasi-optimal $hp$-explicit estimates for the approximation of the Dirichlet and Neumann traces of these solutions for uniform time steps and (globally) quasi-uniform meshes on the boundary. The results are applied to an $hp$-version of the time domain boundary element method. Numerical examples confirm the theoretical results for the Dirichlet problem both for screens and polyhedral domains.
The presented paper concentrates on the boundary element method (BEM) for the heat equation in three spatial dimensions. In particular, we deal with tensor product space-time meshes allowing for quadrature schemes analytic in time and numerical in space. The spatial integrals can be treated by standard BEM techniques known from three dimensional stationary problems. The contribution of the paper is twofold. First, we provide temporal antiderivatives of the heat kernel necessary for the assembly of BEM matrices and the evaluation of the representation formula. Secondly, the presented approach h…
In recent papers the author introduced a simple alternative to isoparametric finite elements of the n-simplex type, to enhance the accuracy of approximations of second-order boundary value problems with Dirichlet conditions, posed in smooth curved domains. This technique is based upon trial-functions consisting of piecewise polynomials defined on straight-edged triangular or tetrahedral meshes, interpolating the Dirichlet boundary conditions at points of the true boundary. In contrast the test-functions are defined upon the standard degrees of freedom associated with the underlying method for …
In this note, we propose a simple way of constructing HDG+ projections on polyhedral elements. The projections enable us to analyze the Lehrenfeld-Schöberl HDG (HDG+) methods in a very concise manner, and make many existing analysis techniques of standard HDG methods reusable for HDG+. The novelty here is an alternative way of constructing the projections without using $M$-decompositions as a middle step. This extends our previous results [S. Du and F.-J. Sayas, SpringerBriefs in Mathematics (2019)] (elliptic problems) and [S. Du and F.-J. Sayas, Math.~Comp.~89~(2020), 1745-1782] (elasticity) …
