Sum-rank Hamming codes are introduced in this work. They are essentially defined as the longest codes (thus of highest information rate) with minimum sum-rank distance at least $ 3 $ (thus one-error-correcting) for a fixed redundancy $ r $, base-field size $ q $ and field-extension degree $ m $ (i.e., number of matrix rows). General upper bounds on their code length, number of shots or sublengths and average sublength are obtained based on such parameters. When the field-extension degree is $ 1 $, it is shown that sum-rank isometry classes of sum-rank Hamming codes are in bijective correspondence with maximal-size partial spreads. In that case, it is also shown that sum-rank Hamming codes are perfect codes for the sum-rank metric. Also in that case, estimates on the parameters (lengths and number of shots) of sum-rank Hamming codes are given, together with an efficient syndrome decoding algorithm. Duals of sum-rank Hamming codes, called sum-rank simplex codes, are then introduced. Bounds on the minimum sum-rank distance of sum-rank simplex codes are given based on known bounds on the size of partial spreads. As applications, sum-rank Hamming codes are proposed for error correction in multishot matrix-multiplicative channels and to construct locally repairable codes over small fields, including binary.
Rank weights and generalized rank weights have been proven to characterize error and erasure correction, and information leakage in linear network coding, in the same way as Hamming weights and generalized Hamming weights describe classical error and erasure correction, and information leakage in wire-tap channels of type II and code-based secret sharing. Although many similarities between both cases have been established and proven in the literature, many other known results in the Hamming case, such as bounds or characterizations of weight-preserving maps, have not been translated to the ran…
In this paper, a Roos like bound on the minimum distance for skew cyclic codes over a general field is provided. The result holds in the Hamming metric and in the rank metric. The proofs involve arithmetic properties of skew polynomials and an analysis of the rank of parity-check matrices. For the rank metric case, a way to arithmetically construct codes with a prescribed minimum rank distance, using the skew Roos bound, is also given. Moreover, some examples of MDS codes and MRD codes over finite fields are built, using the skew Roos bound.
Stopping sets, and in particular their numbers and sizes, play an important role in determining the performance of iterative decoders of linear codes over binary erasure channels. In the 2004 Shannon Lecture, McEliece presented an expression for the number of stopping sets of size three for a full-rank parity-check matrix of the Hamming code. In this correspondence, we derive an expression for the number of stopping sets of any given size for the same parity-check matrix.
We consider linear codes over some fixed finite field extension over an arbitrary finite field. Gabidulin introduced rank metric codes, by endowing linear codes over the extension field with a rank weight over the base field and studied their basic properties in analogy with linear codes and the classical Hamming distance. Inspired by the characterization of wiretap II codes in terms of generalized Hamming weights by Wei, Kurihara et al. defined some generalized rank weights and showed their relevance for secure network coding. In this paper, we derive a statement for generalized rank weights …
The column Hamming distance of a convolutional code determines the error correction capability when streaming over a class of packet erasure channels. We introduce a metric known as the column sum rank, that parallels column Hamming distance when streaming over a network with link failures. We prove rank analogues of several known column Hamming distance properties and introduce a new family of convolutional codes that maximize the column sum rank up to the code memory. Our construction involves finding a class of super-regular matrices that preserve this property after multiplication with non…
This paper investigates the relationship between the rank weight distribution of a linear code and that of its dual code. The main result of this paper is that, similar to the MacWilliams identity for the Hamming metric, the rank weight distribution of any linear code can be expressed as an analytical expression of that of its dual code. Remarkably, our new identity has a similar form to the MacWilliams identity for the Hamming metric. Our new identity provides a significant analytical tool to the rank weight distribution analysis of linear codes. We use a linear space based approach in the pr…
We provide a geometric characterization of $k$-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$-linear sum-rank metric codes as tuples of $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^k$. We then use this characterization to study one-weight codes in the sum-rank metric. This leads us to extend the family of linearized Reed-Solomon codes in order to obtain a doubly-extended version of them. We prove that these codes are still maximum sum-rank distance (MSRD) codes and, when $k=2$, they are one-weight, as in the Hamming-metric case. We then focus on constant rank-profile codes in the sum-rank metric, which are a…
Sum-rank metric codes have recently attracted the attention of many researchers, due to their relevance in several applications. Mathematically, the sum-rank metric is a natural generalization of both the Hamming metric and the rank metric. In this paper, we provide an Anticode Bound for the sum-rank metric, which extends the corresponding Hamming and rank-metric Anticode bounds. We classify then optimal anticodes, i.e., codes attaining the sum-rank metric Anticode Bound. We use these optimal anticodes to define generalized sum-rank weights and we study their main properties. In particular, we…
We propose the first non-trivial generic decoding algorithm for codes in the sum-rank metric. The new method combines ideas of well-known generic decoders in the Hamming and rank metric. For the same code parameters and number of errors, the new generic decoder has a larger expected complexity than the known generic decoders for the Hamming metric and smaller than the known rank-metric decoders. Furthermore, we give a formal hardness reduction, providing evidence that generic sum-rank decoding is computationally hard. As a by-product of the above, we solve some fundamental coding problems in t…
This work investigates the structure of rank-metric codes in connection with concepts from finite geometry, most notably the $q$-analogues of projective systems and blocking sets. We also illustrate how to associate a classical Hamming-metric code to a rank-metric one, in such a way that various rank-metric properties naturally translate into the homonymous Hamming-metric notions under this correspondence. The most interesting applications of our results lie in the theory of minimal rank-metric codes, which we introduce and study from several angles. Our main contributions are bounds for the p…
Permutation codes are widely studied objects due to their numerous applications in various areas, such as power line communications, block ciphers, and the rank modulation scheme for flash memories. Several kinds of metrics are considered for permutation codes according to their specific applications. This paper concerns some improvements on the bounds of permutation codes under Hamming metric and Kendall's $τ$-metric respectively, using mainly a graph coloring approach. Specifically, under Hamming metric, we improve the Gilbert-Varshamov bound asymptotically by a factor $n$, when the minimum …
Error-correcting pairs were introduced independently by Pellikaan and Kötter as a general method of decoding linear codes with respect to the Hamming metric using coordinatewise products of vectors, and are used for many well-known families of codes. In this paper, we define new types of vector products, extending the coordinatewise product, some of which preserve symbolic products of linearized polynomials after evaluation and some of which coincide with usual products of matrices. Then we define rank error-correcting pairs for codes that are linear over the extension field and for codes that…
Error control is significant to network coding, since when unchecked, errors greatly deteriorate the throughput gains of network coding and seriously undermine both reliability and security of data. Two families of codes, subspace and rank metric codes, have been used to provide error control for random linear network coding. In this paper, we enhance the error correction capability of these two families of codes by using a novel two-tier decoding scheme. While the decoding of subspace and rank metric codes serves a second-tier decoding, we propose to perform a first-tier decoding on the packe…
We provide an algebraic description for sum-rank metric codes, as quotient space of a skew polynomial ring. This approach generalizes at the same time the skew group algebra setting for rank-metric codes and the polynomial setting for codes in the Hamming metric. This allows to construct twisted linearized Reed-Solomon codes, a new family of maximum sum-rank distance codes extending at the same time Sheekey's twisted Gabidulin codes in the rank metric and twisted Reed-Solomon codes in the Hamming metric. Furthermore, we provide an analogue in the sum-rank metric of Trombetti-Zhou construction,…
Reed-Solomon codes and Gabidulin codes have maximum Hamming distance and maximum rank distance, respectively. A general construction using skew polynomials, called skew Reed-Solomon codes, has already been introduced in the literature. In this work, we introduce a linearized version of such codes, called linearized Reed-Solomon codes. We prove that they have maximum sum-rank distance. Such distance is of interest in multishot network coding or in singleshot multi-network coding. To prove our result, we introduce new metrics defined by skew polynomials, which we call skew metrics, we prove that…
In the last decade there has been a great interest in extending results for codes equipped with the Hamming metric to analogous results for codes endowed with the rank metric. This work follows this thread of research and studies the characterization of systematic generator matrices (encoders) of codes with maximum rank distance. In the context of Hamming distance these codes are the so-called Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) codes and systematic encoders have been fully investigated. In this paper we investigate the algebraic properties and representation of encoders in systematic form of Max…
So far, there is no polynomial-time list decoding algorithm (beyond half the minimum distance) for Gabidulin codes. These codes can be seen as the rank-metric equivalent of Reed--Solomon codes. In this paper, we provide bounds on the list size of rank-metric codes in order to understand whether polynomial-time list decoding is possible or whether it works only with exponential time complexity. Three bounds on the list size are proven. The first one is a lower exponential bound for Gabidulin codes and shows that for these codes no polynomial-time list decoding beyond the Johnson radius exists. …
In this paper we study generalized weights as an algebraic invariant of a code. We first describe anticodes in the Hamming and in the rank metric, proving in particular that optimal anticodes in the rank metric coincide with Frobenius-closed spaces. Then we characterize both generalized Hamming and rank weights of a code in terms of the intersection of the code with optimal anticodes in the respective metrics. Inspired by this description, we propose a new algebraic invariant, which we call "Delsarte generalized weights", for Delsarte rank-metric codes based on optimal anticodes of matrices. W…

We consider the class of linear antipodal two-weight rank metric codes and discuss their properties and characterization in terms of $t$-spreads. It is shown that the dimension of such codes is $2$ and the minimum rank distance is at least half of the length. We construct antipodal two-weight rank metric codes from certain MRD codes. A complete classification of such codes is obtained, when the minimum rank distance is equal to half of the length. As a consequence of our construction of two-weight rank metric codes, we get some explicit two-weight Hamming metric codes.
We propose a framework for constructing efficient code-based encryption schemes from codes that do not hide any structure in their public matrix. The framework is in the spirit of the schemes first proposed by Alekhnovich in 2003 and based on the difficulty of decoding random linear codes from random errors of low weight. We depart somewhat from Aleknovich's approach and propose an encryption scheme based on the difficulty of decoding random quasi-cyclic codes. We propose two new cryptosystems instantiated within our framework: the Hamming Quasi-Cyclic cryptosystem (HQC), based on the Hamming …
This paper investigates general properties of codes with the rank metric. We first investigate asymptotic packing properties of rank metric codes. Then, we study sphere covering properties of rank metric codes, derive bounds on their parameters, and investigate their asymptotic covering properties. Finally, we establish several identities that relate the rank weight distribution of a linear code to that of its dual code. One of our identities is the counterpart of the MacWilliams identity for the Hamming metric, and it has a different form from the identity by Delsarte.
The MacWilliams identity, which relates the weight distribution of a code to the weight distribution of its dual code, is useful in determining the weight distribution of codes. In this paper, we derive the MacWilliams identity for linear codes with the rank metric, and our identity has a different form than that by Delsarte. Using our MacWilliams identity, we also derive related identities for rank metric codes. These identities parallel the binomial and power moment identities derived for codes with the Hamming metric.
Fuzzy authentication allows authentication based on the fuzzy matching of two objects, for example based on the similarity of two strings in the Hamming metric, or on the similiarity of two sets in the set difference metric. Aim of this paper is to show other models and algorithms of secure fuzzy authentication, which can be performed using the rank metric. A few schemes are presented which can then be applied in different scenarios and applications.
The sum-rank metric arises as an algebraic approach for coding in MIMO block-fading channels and multishot network coding. Codes designed in the sum-rank metric have raised interest in applications such as streaming codes, robust coded distributed storage systems and post-quantum secure cryptosystems. The sum-rank metric can be seen as a generalization of the well-known Hamming metric and the rank metric. As a relatively new metric, there are still many open theoretical problems for codes in the sum-rank metric. In this paper we investigate the geometrical properties of the balls with sum-rank…
We construct six new explicit families of linear maximum sum-rank distance (MSRD) codes, each of which has the smallest field sizes among all known MSRD codes for some parameter regime. Using them and a previous result of the author, we provide two new explicit families of linear partial MDS (PMDS) codes with smaller field sizes than previous PMDS codes for some parameter regimes. Our approach is to characterize evaluation points that turn extended Moore matrices into the parity-check matrix of a linear MSRD code. We then produce such sequences from codes with good Hamming-metric parameters. T…
In this paper, we study the hardness of decoding a random code endowed with the cover metric. As the cover metric lies in between the Hamming and rank metric, it presents itself as a promising candidate for code-based cryptography. We give a polynomial-time reduction from the classical Hamming-metric decoding problem, which proves the NP-hardness of the decoding problem in the cover metric. We then provide a generic decoder, following the information set decoding idea from Prange's algorithm in the Hamming metric. A study of its cost then shows that the complexity is exponential in the number …
We extend the notion of locality from the Hamming metric to the rank and subspace metrics. Our main contribution is to construct a class of array codes with locality constraints in the rank metric. Our motivation for constructing such codes stems from designing codes for efficient data recovery from correlated and/or mixed (i.e., complete and partial) failures in distributed storage systems. Specifically, the proposed local rank-metric codes can recover locally from 'crisscross errors and erasures', which affect a limited number of rows and/or columns of the storage system. We also derive a Si…
The paper deals with the perfect 1-error correcting codes over a finite field with $q$ elements (briefly $q$-ary 1-perfect codes). We show that the orthogonal code to the $q$-ary non-full-rank 1-perfect code of length $n = (q^{m}-1)/(q-1)$ is a $q$-ary constant-weight code with Hamming weight equals to $q^{m - 1}$ where $m$ is any natural number not less than two. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for $q$-ary 1-perfect codes of non-full rank. We suggest a generalization of the concatenation construction to the $q$-ary case and construct the ternary 1-perfect codes of length 13 and …
Skew cyclic codes play the same role as cyclic codes in the theory of error-correcting codes for the rank metric. In this paper, we give descriptions of these codes by root spaces, cyclotomic spaces and idempotent generators. We prove that the lattice of skew cyclic codes is anti-isomorphic to the lattice of root spaces, study these two lattices and extend the rank-BCH bound on their minimum rank distance to rank-metric versions of the van Lint-Wilson's shift and Hartmann-Tzeng bounds. Finally, we study skew cyclic codes which are linear over the base field, proving that these codes include al…
In this paper we give a randomized reduction for the Rank Syndrome Decoding problem and Rank Minimum Distance problem for rank codes. Our results are based on an embedding from linear codes equipped with Hamming distance unto linear codes over an extension field equipped with the rank metric. We prove that if both previous problems for rank metric are in ZPP = RP$\cap$coRP, then we would have NP=ZPP. We also give complexity results for the respective approximation problems in rank metric.
The sum-rank metric can be seen as a generalization of both, the rank and the Hamming metric. It is well known that sum-rank metric codes outperform rank metric codes in terms of the required field size to construct maximum distance separable codes (i.e., the codes achieving the Singleton bound in the corresponding metric). In this work, we investigate the covering property of sum-rank metric codes to enrich the theory of sum-rank metric codes. We intend to answer the question: what is the minimum cardinality of a code given a sum-rank covering radius? We show the relations of this quantity be…
(Partial) Unit Memory ((P)UM) codes provide a powerful possibility to construct convolutional codes based on block codes in order to achieve a high decoding performance. In this contribution, a construction based on Gabidulin codes is considered. This construction requires a modified rank metric, the so-called sum rank metric. For the sum rank metric, the free rank distance, the extended row rank distance and its slope are defined analogous to the extended row distance in Hamming metric. Upper bounds for the free rank distance and the slope of (P)UM codes in the sum rank metric are derived and…
The tensor product of one code endowed with the Hamming metric and one endowed with the rank metric is analyzed. This gives a code which naturally inherits the sum-rank metric. Specializing to the product of a cyclic code and a skew-cyclic code, the resulting code turns out to belong to the recently introduced family of cyclic-skew-cyclic. A group theoretical description of these codes is given, after investigating the semilinear isometries in the sum-rank metric. Finally, a generalization of the Roos and the Hartmann-Tzeng bounds for the sum rank-metric is established, as well as a new lower …
We address the problem of multipermutation code design in the Ulam metric for novel storage applications. Multipermutation codes are suitable for flash memory where cell charges may share the same rank. Changes in the charges of cells manifest themselves as errors whose effects on the retrieved signal may be measured via the Ulam distance. As part of our analysis, we study multipermutation codes in the Hamming metric, known as constant composition codes. We then present bounds on the size of multipermutation codes and their capacity, for both the Ulam and the Hamming metrics. Finally, we prese…
We consider the notion of a $(q,m)$-polymatroid, due to Shiromoto, and the more general notion of $(q,m)$-demi-polymatroid, and show how generalized weights can be defined for them. Further, we establish a duality for these weights analogous to Wei duality for generalized Hamming weights of linear codes. The corresponding results of Ravagnani for Delsarte rank metric codes, and Martinez-Penas and Matsumoto for relative generalized rank weights are derived as a consequence.
We determine the asymptotic proportion of free modules over finite chain rings with good distance properties and treat the asymptotics in the code length n and the residue field size q separately. We then specialize and apply our technique to rank metric codes and to Hamming metric codes.
In this paper, we propose a construction of full-rank q-ary 1-perfect codes over finite fields. This construction is a generalization of the Etzion and Vardy construction of full-rank binary 1-perfect codes (1994). Properties of i-components of q-ary Hamming codes are investigated and the construction of full-rank q-ary 1-perfect codes is based on these properties. The switching construction of 1-perfect codes are generalized for the q-ary case. We give a generalization of the concept of i-component of 1-perfect codes and introduce the concept of (i,σ)-components of q-ary 1-perfect codes. We a…
The puncturing and shortening technique are two important approaches to constructing new linear codes from old ones. In the past 70 years, a lot of progress on the puncturing technique has been made, and many works on punctured linear codes have been done. Many families of linear codes with interesting parameters have been obtained with the puncturing technique. However, little research on the shortening technique has been done and there are only a handful references on shortened linear codes. The first objective of this paper is to prove some general theory for shortened linear codes. The sec…
This paper presents an algorithm for decoding homogeneous interleaved codes of high interleaving order in the rank metric. The new decoder is an adaption of the Hamming-metric decoder by Metzner and Kapturowski (1990) and guarantees to correct all rank errors of weight up to $d-2$ whose rank over the large base field of the code equals the number of errors, where $d$ is the minimum rank distance of the underlying code. In contrast to previously-known decoding algorithms, the new decoder works for any rank-metric code, not only Gabidulin codes. It is purely based on linear-algebraic computation…
We consider rank modulation codes for flash memories that allow for handling arbitrary charge-drop errors. Unlike classical rank modulation codes used for correcting errors that manifest themselves as swaps of two adjacently ranked elements, the proposed \emph{translocation rank codes} account for more general forms of errors that arise in storage systems. Translocations represent a natural extension of the notion of adjacent transpositions and as such may be analyzed using related concepts in combinatorics and rank modulation coding. Our results include derivation of the asymptotic capacity o…
The main purpose of this paper is to further study the structure, parameters and constructions of the recently introduced minimal codes in the sum-rank metric. These objects form a bridge between the classical minimal codes in the Hamming metric, the subject of intense research over the past three decades partly because of their cryptographic properties, and the more recent rank-metric minimal codes. We prove some bounds on their parameters, existence results, and, via a tool that we name geometric dual, we manage to construct minimal codes with few weights. A generalization of the celebrated …
In most of the network coding problems with $k$ messages, the existence of binary network coding solution over $\mathbb{F}_2$ depends on the existence of adequate sets of $k$-dimensional binary vectors such that each set comprises of linearly independent vectors. In a given $k \times n$ ($n \geq k$) binary matrix, there exist ${n}\choose{k}$ binary sub-matrices of size $k \times k$. Every possible $k \times k$ sub-matrix may be of full rank or singular depending on the columns present in the matrix. In this work, for full rank binary matrix $\mathbf{G}$ of size $k \times n$ satisfying certain …
