In this paper, a Roos like bound on the minimum distance for skew cyclic codes over a general field is provided. The result holds in the Hamming metric and in the rank metric. The proofs involve arithmetic properties of skew polynomials and an analysis of the rank of parity-check matrices. For the rank metric case, a way to arithmetically construct codes with a prescribed minimum rank distance, using the skew Roos bound, is also given. Moreover, some examples of MDS codes and MRD codes over finite fields are built, using the skew Roos bound.
The use of skew polynomial rings allows to endow linear codes with cyclic structures which are not cyclic in the classical (commutative) sense. Whenever these skew cyclic structures are carefully chosen, some control over the Hamming distance is gained, and it is possible to design efficient decoding algorithms. In this paper, we give a version of the Hartmann-Tzeng bound that works for a wide class of skew cyclic codes. We also provide a practical method for constructing them with designed distance. For skew BCH codes, which are covered by our constructions, we discuss decoding algorithms. De…
In this paper a framework to study the dual of skew cyclic codes is proposed. The transposed Hamming ring extensions are based in the existence of an anti-isomorphism of algebras between skew polynomial rings. Our construction is applied to left ideal convolutional codes, skew constacyclic codes and skew Reed-Solomon code, showing that the dual of these codes belong to the same class.
Reed-Solomon codes and Gabidulin codes have maximum Hamming distance and maximum rank distance, respectively. A general construction using skew polynomials, called skew Reed-Solomon codes, has already been introduced in the literature. In this work, we introduce a linearized version of such codes, called linearized Reed-Solomon codes. We prove that they have maximum sum-rank distance. Such distance is of interest in multishot network coding or in singleshot multi-network coding. To prove our result, we introduce new metrics defined by skew polynomials, which we call skew metrics, we prove that…
We provide an algebraic description for sum-rank metric codes, as quotient space of a skew polynomial ring. This approach generalizes at the same time the skew group algebra setting for rank-metric codes and the polynomial setting for codes in the Hamming metric. This allows to construct twisted linearized Reed-Solomon codes, a new family of maximum sum-rank distance codes extending at the same time Sheekey's twisted Gabidulin codes in the rank metric and twisted Reed-Solomon codes in the Hamming metric. Furthermore, we provide an analogue in the sum-rank metric of Trombetti-Zhou construction,…
In this work, we study a class of generalized quasi-cyclic (GQC) codes called skew GQC codes. By the factorization theory of ideals, we give the Chinese Remainder Theorem over the skew polynomial ring, which leads to a canonical decomposition of skew GQC codes. We also focus on some characteristics of skew GQC codes in details. For a 1-generator skew GQC code, we define the parity-check polynomial, determine the dimension and give a lower bound on the minimum Hamming distance. The skew quasi-cyclic (QC) codes are also discussed briefly.
The tensor product of one code endowed with the Hamming metric and one endowed with the rank metric is analyzed. This gives a code which naturally inherits the sum-rank metric. Specializing to the product of a cyclic code and a skew-cyclic code, the resulting code turns out to belong to the recently introduced family of cyclic-skew-cyclic. A group theoretical description of these codes is given, after investigating the semilinear isometries in the sum-rank metric. Finally, a generalization of the Roos and the Hartmann-Tzeng bounds for the sum rank-metric is established, as well as a new lower …
Codes which attain the sphere packing bound are called perfect codes. The most important metrics in coding theory on which perfect codes are defined are the Hamming metric and the Johnson metric. While for the Hamming metric all perfect codes over finite fields are known, in the Johnson metric it was conjectured by Delsarte in 1970's that there are no nontrivial perfect codes. The general nonexistence proof still remains the open problem. In this work we examine constant weight codes as well as doubly constant weight codes, and reduce the range of parameters in which perfect codes may exist in…
In this paper we study a special type of quasi-cyclic (QC) codes called skew QC codes. This set of codes is constructed using a non-commutative ring called the skew polynomial rings $F[x;θ]$. After a brief description of the skew polynomial ring $F[x;θ]$ it is shown that skew QC codes are left submodules of the ring $R_{s}^{l}=(F[x;θ]/(x^{s}-1))^{l}.$ The notions of generator and parity-check polynomials are given. We also introduce the notion of similar polynomials in the ring $F[x;θ]$ and show that parity-check polynomials for skew QC codes are unique up to similarity. Our search results lea…
Skew cyclic codes play the same role as cyclic codes in the theory of error-correcting codes for the rank metric. In this paper, we give descriptions of these codes by root spaces, cyclotomic spaces and idempotent generators. We prove that the lattice of skew cyclic codes is anti-isomorphic to the lattice of root spaces, study these two lattices and extend the rank-BCH bound on their minimum rank distance to rank-metric versions of the van Lint-Wilson's shift and Hartmann-Tzeng bounds. Finally, we study skew cyclic codes which are linear over the base field, proving that these codes include al…
Skew polynomials are a class of non-commutative polynomials that have several applications in computer science, coding theory and cryptography. In particular, skew polynomials can be used to construct and decode evaluation codes in several metrics, like e.g. the Hamming, rank, sum-rank and skew metric. In this paper we propose a fast divide-and-conquer variant of the Kötter-Nielsen-Høholdt (KNH) interpolation over free modules over skew polynomial rings. The proposed KNH interpolation can be used to solve the interpolation step of interpolation-based decoding of (interleaved) Gabidulin, linear…
Two skew cyclic codes can be equivalent for the Hamming metric only if they have the same length, and only the zero code is degenerate. The situation is completely different for the rank metric, where lengths of codes correspond to the number of outgoing links from the source when applying the code on a network. We study rank equivalences between skew cyclic codes of different lengths and, with the aim of finding the skew cyclic code of smallest length that is rank equivalent to a given one, we define different types of length for a given skew cyclic code, relate them and compute them in most …
Skew polynomials are a class of non-commutative polynomials that have several applications in computer science, coding theory and cryptography. In particular, skew polynomials can be used to construct and decode evaluation codes in several metrics, like e.g. the Hamming, rank, sum-rank and skew metric. We propose a fast divide-and-conquer variant of Kötter-Nielsen-Høholdt (KNH) interpolation algorithm: it inputs a list of linear functionals on skew polynomial vectors, and outputs a reduced Gröbner basis of their kernel intersection. We show, that the proposed KNH interpolation can be used to s…
We propose a decoding algorithm for a class of convolutional codes called skew BCH convolutional codes. These are convolutional codes of designed Hamming distance endowed with a cyclic structure yielding a left ideal of a non-commutative ring (a quotient of a skew polynomial ring). In this setting, right and left division algorithms exist, so our algorithm follows the guidelines of the Sugiyama's procedure for finding the error locator and error evaluator polynomials for BCH block codes.
The sum-rank metric is a hybrid between the Hamming metric and the rank metric and suitable for error correction in multishot network coding and distributed storage as well as for the design of quantum-resistant cryptosystems. In this work, we consider the construction and decoding of folded linearized Reed-Solomon (FLRS) codes, which are shown to be maximum sum-rank distance (MSRD) for appropriate parameter choices. We derive an efficient interpolation-based decoding algorithm for FLRS codes that can be used as a list decoder or as a probabilistic unique decoder. The proposed decoding scheme …
We investigate the notion of cyclicity for convolutional codes as it has been introduced by Piret and Roos in the seventies. Codes of this type are described as submodules of the module of all vector polynomials in one variable with some additional generalized cyclic structure but also as specific left ideals in a skew polynomial ring. Extending a result of Piret, we show in a purely algebraic setting that these ideals are always principal. This leads to the notion of a generator polynomial just like for cyclic block codes. Similarly a control polynomial can be introduced by considering the ri…
The sum-rank metric naturally extends both the Hamming and rank metrics in coding theory over fields. It measures the error-correcting capability of codes in multishot matrix-multiplicative channels (e.g. linear network coding or the discrete memoryless channel on fields). Although this metric has already shown to be of interest in several applications, not much is known about it. In this work, sum-rank supports for codewords and linear codes are introduced and studied, with emphasis on duality. The lattice structure of sum-rank supports is given; characterizations of the ambient spaces (\text…
We consider decoding of vertically homogeneous interleaved sum-rank-metric codes with high interleaving order $s$, that are constructed by stacking $s$ codewords of a single constituent code. We propose a Metzner--Kapturowski-like decoding algorithm that can correct errors of sum-rank weight $t <= d-2$, where $d$ is the minimum distance of the code, if the interleaving order $s > t$ and the error matrix fulfills a certain rank condition. The proposed decoding algorithm generalizes the Metzner--Kapturowski(-like) decoders in the Hamming metric and the rank metric and has a computational complex…
