We propose the first non-trivial generic decoding algorithm for codes in the sum-rank metric. The new method combines ideas of well-known generic decoders in the Hamming and rank metric. For the same code parameters and number of errors, the new generic decoder has a larger expected complexity than the known generic decoders for the Hamming metric and smaller than the known rank-metric decoders. Furthermore, we give a formal hardness reduction, providing evidence that generic sum-rank decoding is computationally hard. As a by-product of the above, we solve some fundamental coding problems in the sum-rank metric: we give an algorithm to compute the exact size of a sphere of a given sum-rank radius, and also give an upper bound as a closed formula; and we study erasure decoding with respect to two different notions of support.
The rank decoding problem has been the subject of much attention in this last decade. This problem, which is at the base of the security of public-key cryptosystems based on rank metric codes, is traditionally studied over finite fields. But the recent generalizations of certain classes of rank-metric codes from finite fields to finite rings have naturally created the interest to tackle the rank decoding problem in the case of finite rings. In this paper, we show that solving the rank decoding problem over finite principal ideal rings is at least as hard as the rank decoding problem over finit…
In this paper we present an interpolation-based decoding algorithm to decode a family of maximum rank distance codes proposed recently by Trombetti and Zhou. We employ the properties of the Dickson matrix associated with a linearized polynomial with a given rank and the modified Berlekamp-Massey algorithm in decoding. When the rank of the error vector attains the unique decoding radius, the problem is converted to solving a quadratic polynomial, which ensures that the proposed decoding algorithm has polynomial-time complexity.
In this work we will present algorithms for decoding rank metric codes. First we will look at a new decoding algorithm for Gabidulin codes using the property of Dickson matrices corresponding to linearized polynomials. We will be using a Berlekamp-Massey-like algorithm in the process. We will show the difference between our and existing algorithms. Apart from being a new algorithm, it is also interesting that it can be modified to get a decoding algorithm for general twisted Gabidulin codes.
This paper presents encoding and decoding algorithms for several families of optimal rank metric codes whose codes are in restricted forms of symmetric, alternating and Hermitian matrices. First, we show the evaluation encoding is the right choice for these codes and then we provide easily reversible encoding methods for each family. Later unique decoding algorithms for the codes are described. The decoding algorithms are interpolation-based and can uniquely correct errors for each code with rank up to $\lfloor(d-1)/2\rfloor$ in polynomial-time, where $d$ is the minimum distance of the code.
We consider the decoding of rank metric codes assuming the error matrix is symmetric. We prove two results. First, for rates $<1/2$ there exists a broad family of rank metric codes for which any symmetric error pattern, even of maximal rank can be corrected. Moreover, the corresponding family of decodable codes includes Gabidulin codes of rate $<1/2$. Second, for rates $>1/2$, we propose a decoder for Gabidulin codes correcting symmetric errors of rank up to $n-k$. The two mentioned decoders are deterministic and worst case.
Maximum Hermitian rank metric codes were introduced by Schmidt in 2018 and in this paper we propose both interpolation-based encoding and decoding algorithms for this family of codes when the length and the minimum distance of the code are both odd.
Compared with classical block codes, efficient list decoding of rank-metric codes seems more difficult. Although the list decodability of random rank-metric codes and limits to list decodability have been completely determined, little work on efficient list decoding rank-metric codes has been done. The only known efficient list decoding of rank-metric codes $\mC$ gives decoding radius up to the Singleton bound $1-R-\Ge$ with positive rate $R$ when $ρ(\mC)$ is extremely small, i.e., $Θ(\Ge^2)$ , where $ρ(\mC)$ denotes the ratio of the number of rows over the number of columns of $\mC$ \cite[STO…
This paper presents an algorithm for decoding homogeneous interleaved codes of high interleaving order in the rank metric. The new decoder is an adaption of the Hamming-metric decoder by Metzner and Kapturowski (1990) and guarantees to correct all rank errors of weight up to $d-2$ whose rank over the large base field of the code equals the number of errors, where $d$ is the minimum rank distance of the underlying code. In contrast to previously-known decoding algorithms, the new decoder works for any rank-metric code, not only Gabidulin codes. It is purely based on linear-algebraic computation…
This paper investigates the decoding of certain Gabidulin codes that were transmitted over a channel with space-symmetric errors. Space-symmetric errors are additive error matrices that have the property that their column and row spaces are equal. We show that for channels restricted to space-symmetric errors, with high probability errors of rank up to 2(n-k)/3 can be decoded with a Gabidulin code of length n and dimension k, using a weak-self orthogonal basis as code locators.
We propose a new class of space-time block codes based on finite-field rank-metric codes in combination with a rank-metric-preserving mapping to the set of Eisenstein integers. It is shown that these codes achieve maximum diversity order and improve upon certain existing constructions. Moreover, we present a new decoding algorithm for these codes which utilizes the algebraic structure of the underlying finite-field rank-metric codes and employs lattice-reduction-aided equalization. This decoder does not achieve the same performance as the classical maximum-likelihood decoding methods, but has …
Recently, codes in the sum-rank metric attracted attention due to several applications in e.g. multishot network coding, distributed storage and quantum-resistant cryptography. The sum-rank analogs of Reed-Solomon and Gabidulin codes are linearized Reed-Solomon codes. We show how to construct $h$-folded linearized Reed-Solomon (FLRS) codes and derive an interpolation-based decoding scheme that is capable of correcting sum-rank errors beyond the unique decoding radius. The presented decoder can be used for either list or probabilistic unique decoding and requires at most $\mathcal{O}(sn^2)$ ope…
We consider decoding of vertically homogeneous interleaved sum-rank-metric codes with high interleaving order $s$, that are constructed by stacking $s$ codewords of a single constituent code. We propose a Metzner--Kapturowski-like decoding algorithm that can correct errors of sum-rank weight $t <= d-2$, where $d$ is the minimum distance of the code, if the interleaving order $s > t$ and the error matrix fulfills a certain rank condition. The proposed decoding algorithm generalizes the Metzner--Kapturowski(-like) decoders in the Hamming metric and the rank metric and has a computational complex…
So far, there is no polynomial-time list decoding algorithm (beyond half the minimum distance) for Gabidulin codes. These codes can be seen as the rank-metric equivalent of Reed--Solomon codes. In this paper, we provide bounds on the list size of rank-metric codes in order to understand whether polynomial-time list decoding is possible or whether it works only with exponential time complexity. Three bounds on the list size are proven. The first one is a lower exponential bound for Gabidulin codes and shows that for these codes no polynomial-time list decoding beyond the Johnson radius exists. …
An efficient decoding algorithm for horizontally u-interleaved LRPC codes is proposed and analyzed. Upper bounds on the decoding failure rate and the computational complexity of the algorithm are derived. It is shown that interleaving reduces the decoding failure rate exponentially in the interleaving order u whereas the computational complexity grows linearly.
We show that decoding of $\ell$-Interleaved Gabidulin codes, as well as list-$\ell$ decoding of Mahdavifar--Vardy codes can be performed by row reducing skew polynomial matrices. Inspired by row reduction of $\F[x]$ matrices, we develop a general and flexible approach of transforming matrices over skew polynomial rings into a certain reduced form. We apply this to solve generalised shift register problems over skew polynomial rings which occur in decoding $\ell$-Interleaved Gabidulin codes. We obtain an algorithm with complexity $O(\ell μ^2)$ where $μ$ measures the size of the input problem an…
In this paper an interpolation-based decoding algorithm to decode Gabidulin codes, transmitted through a finely restricted channel, is proposed. The algorithm is able to decode rank errors beyond half the minimum distance by one unit. Also the existing decoding algorithms for generalized twisted Gabidulin codes and additive generalized twisted Gabidulin codes are improved.
In this paper we give a randomized reduction for the Rank Syndrome Decoding problem and Rank Minimum Distance problem for rank codes. Our results are based on an embedding from linear codes equipped with Hamming distance unto linear codes over an extension field equipped with the rank metric. We prove that if both previous problems for rank metric are in ZPP = RP$\cap$coRP, then we would have NP=ZPP. We also give complexity results for the respective approximation problems in rank metric.
Subspace codes and rank-metric codes can be used to correct errors and erasures in network, with linear network coding. Subspace codes were introduced by Koetter and Kschischang to correct errors and erasures in networks where topology is unknown (the noncoherent case). In a previous work, we have developed a family of subspace codes, based upon the Koetter-Kschichang construction, which are efficiently list decodable. Using these codes, we achieved a better decoding radius than Koetter-Kschischiang codes at low rates. Herein, we introduce a new family of subspace codes based upon a different …
In this paper we propose a very simple but powerful self-correction method for the Min-Sum decoding of LPDC codes. Unlike other correction methods known in the literature, our method does not try to correct the check node processing approximation, but it modifies the variable node processing by erasing unreliable messages. However, this positively affects check node messages, which become symmetric Gaussian distributed, and we show that this is sufficient to ensure a quasi-optimal decoding performance. Monte-Carlo simulations show that the proposed Self-Corrected Min-Sum decoding performs very…
We study a connection between two topics: Decoding of Goppa codes arising from an algebraic curve, and rank two extensions of certain line bundles on the curve.
We address the problem of decoding Gabidulin codes beyond their unique error-correction radius. The complexity of this problem is of importance to assess the security of some rank-metric code-based cryptosystems. We propose an approach that introduces row or column erasures to decrease the rank of the error in order to use any proper polynomial-time Gabidulin code error-erasure decoding algorithm. This approach improves on generic rank-metric decoders by an exponential factor.
The sum-rank metric is a hybrid between the Hamming metric and the rank metric and suitable for error correction in multishot network coding and distributed storage as well as for the design of quantum-resistant cryptosystems. In this work, we consider the construction and decoding of folded linearized Reed-Solomon (FLRS) codes, which are shown to be maximum sum-rank distance (MSRD) for appropriate parameter choices. We derive an efficient interpolation-based decoding algorithm for FLRS codes that can be used as a list decoder or as a probabilistic unique decoder. The proposed decoding scheme …
Linearized Reed-Solomon (LRS) codes are sum-rank metric codes that fulfill the Singleton bound with equality. In the two extreme cases of the sum-rank metric, they coincide with Reed-Solomon codes (Hamming metric) and Gabidulin codes (rank metric). List decoding in these extreme cases is well-studied, and the two code classes behave very differently in terms of list size, but nothing is known for the general case. In this paper, we derive a lower bound on the list size for LRS codes, which is, for a large class of LRS codes, exponential directly above the Johnson radius. Furthermore, we show t…
Error control is significant to network coding, since when unchecked, errors greatly deteriorate the throughput gains of network coding and seriously undermine both reliability and security of data. Two families of codes, subspace and rank metric codes, have been used to provide error control for random linear network coding. In this paper, we enhance the error correction capability of these two families of codes by using a novel two-tier decoding scheme. While the decoding of subspace and rank metric codes serves a second-tier decoding, we propose to perform a first-tier decoding on the packe…
In the landmark paper by Hassibi and Hochwald, it is claimed without proof that the upper triangular matrix R encountered during the sphere decoding of any linear dispersion code is full-ranked whenever the rate of the code is less than the minimum of the number of transmit and receive antennas. In this paper, we show that this claim is true only when the number of receive antennas is at least as much as the number of transmit antennas. We also show that all known families of high rate (rate greater than 1 complex symbol per channel use) multigroup ML decodable codes have rank-deficient R matr…
We speed up existing decoding algorithms for three code classes in different metrics: interleaved Gabidulin codes in the rank metric, lifted interleaved Gabidulin codes in the subspace metric, and linearized Reed-Solomon codes in the sum-rank metric. The speed-ups are achieved by new algorithms that reduce the cores of the underlying computational problems of the decoders to one common tool: computing left and right approximant bases of matrices over skew polynomial rings. To accomplish this, we describe a skew-analogue of the existing PM-Basis algorithm for matrices over ordinary polynomials.…
We introduce a new family of rank metric codes: Low Rank Parity Check codes (LRPC), for which we propose an efficient probabilistic decoding algorithm. This family of codes can be seen as the equivalent of classical LDPC codes for the rank metric. We then use these codes to design cryptosystems à la McEliece: more precisely we propose two schemes for key encapsulation mechanism (KEM) and public key encryption (PKE). Unlike rank metric codes used in previous encryption algorithms -notably Gabidulin codes - LRPC codes have a very weak algebraic structure. Our cryptosystems can be seen as an equi…
A quantized message passing decoding algorithm for low-density parity-check codes is presented. The algorithm relies on the min approximation at the check nodes, and on modelling the variable node inbound messages as observations of an extrinsic discrete memoryless channel. The performance of the algorithm is analyzed and compared to quantized min-sum decoding by means of density evolution, and almost closes the gap with the performance of the sum-product algorithm. A stability analysis is derived, which highlights the role played by degree-$3$ variable nodes in the stability condition. Finite…
Codes in the sum-rank metric have various applications in error control for multishot network coding, distributed storage and code-based cryptography. Linearized Reed-Solomon (LRS) codes contain Reed-Solomon and Gabidulin codes as subclasses and fulfill the Singleton-like bound in the sum-rank metric with equality. We propose the first known error-erasure decoder for LRS codes to unleash their full potential for multishot network coding. The presented syndrome-based Berlekamp-Massey-like error-erasure decoder can correct $t_F$ full errors, $t_R$ row erasures and $t_C$ column erasures up to $2t…
While feasibility and obtaining a solution of a given network coding problem are well studied, the decoding procedure and complexity have not garnered much attention. We consider the decoding problem in a network wherein the sources generate multiple messages and the sink nodes demand some or all of the source messages. We consider both linear and non-linear network codes over a finite field and propose to use the sum-product (SP) algorithm over Boolean semiring for decoding at the sink nodes in order to reduce the computational complexity. We use traceback to further lower the computational c…
We consider the decoding problem or the problem of finding low weight codewords for rank metric codes. We show how additional information about the codeword we want to find under the form of certain linear combinations of the entries of the codeword leads to algorithms with a better complexity. This is then used together with a folding technique for attacking a McEliece scheme based on LRPC codes. It leads to a feasible attack on one of the parameters suggested in \cite{GMRZ13}.
Many implementations for decoding LDPC codes are based on the (normalized/offset) min-sum algorithm due to its satisfactory performance and simplicity in operations. Usually, each iteration of the min-sum algorithm contains two scans, the horizontal scan and the vertical scan. This paper presents a single-scan version of the min-sum algorithm to speed up the decoding process. It can also reduce memory usage or wiring because it only needs the addressing from check nodes to variable nodes while the original min-sum algorithm requires that addressing plus the addressing from variable nodes to ch…
We analyze the performance of quantized min-sum decoding of low-density parity-check codes under unreliable message storage. To this end, we introduce a simple bit-level error model and show that decoder symmetry is preserved under this model. Subsequently, we formulate the corresponding density evolution equations to predict the average bit error probability in the limit of infinite blocklength. We present numerical threshold results and we show that using more quantization bits is not always beneficial in the context of faulty decoders.
A new approach for estimating the Decoding Error-Probability (DEP) of LT codes with dense rows is derived by using the conditional Kovalenko's rank distribution. The estimate by the proposed approach is very close to the DEP approximated by Gaussian Elimination, and is significantly less complex. As a key application, we utilize the estimates for obtaining optimal LT codes with dense rows, whose DEP is very close to the Kovalenko's Full-Rank Limit within a desired error-bound. Experimental evidences which show the viability of the estimates are also provided.
Linear constraints for a matrix polytope with no fractional vertex are investigated as intersecting research among permutation codes, rank modulations, and linear programming methods. By focusing the discussion to the block structure of matrices, new classes of such polytopes are obtained from known small polytopes. This concept, called "consolidation", is applied to find a new compact graph which is known as an approach for the graph isomorphism problem. Encoding and decoding algorithms for our new permutation codes are obtained from existing algorithms for small polytopes. The minimum distan…
In this paper, we propose a reduced-complexity optimal modified sphere decoding (MSD) detection scheme for SCMA. As SCMA systems are characterized by a number of resource elements (REs) that are less than the number of the supported users, the channel matrix is rank-deficient, and sphere decoding (SD) cannot be directly applied. Inspired by the Tikhonov regularization, we formulate a new full-rank detection problem that it is equivalent to the original rank-deficient detection problem for constellation points with constant modulus and an important subset of non-constant modulus constellations.…
In this paper, we investigate the sum-capacity of the two-user Gaussian interference channel with Gaussian superposition coding and successive decoding. We first examine an approximate deterministic formulation of the problem, and introduce the complementarity conditions that capture the use of Gaussian coding and successive decoding. In the deterministic channel problem, we find the constrained sum-capacity and its achievable schemes with the minimum number of messages, first in symmetric channels, and then in general asymmetric channels. We show that the constrained sum-capacity oscillates a…
Reliable and low latency multicast communication is important for future vehicular communication. Sparse random linear network coding approach used to ensure the reliability of multicast communication has been widely investigated. A fundamental problem of such communication is to characterize the decoding success probability, which is given by the probability of a sparse random matrix over a finite field being full rank. However, the exact expression for the probability of a sparse random matrix being full rank is still unknown, and existing approximations are recursive or not consistently tig…
Gabidulin codes, originally defined over finite fields, are an important class of rank metric codes with various applications. Recently, their definition was generalized to certain fields of characteristic zero and a Welch--Berlekamp like algorithm with complexity $O(n^3)$ was given. We propose a new application of Gabidulin codes over infinite fields: low-rank matrix recovery. Also, an alternative decoding approach is presented based on a Gao type key equation, reducing the complexity to at least $O(n^2)$. This method immediately connects the decoding problem to well-studied problems, which h…
Aiming at bridging the gap between the maximum likelihood decoding (MLD) and the suboptimal iterative decodings for short or medium length LDPC codes, we present a generalized ordered statistic decoding (OSD) in the form of syndrome decoding, to cascade with the belief propagation (BP) or enhanced min-sum decoding. The OSD is invoked only when the decoding failures are obtained for the preceded iterative decoding method. With respect to the existing OSD which is based on the accumulated log-likelihood ratio (LLR) metric, we extend the accumulative metric to the situation where the BP decoding …
We propose the new rank-metric code-based cryptosystem LIGA which is based on the hardness of list decoding and interleaved decoding of Gabidulin codes. LIGA is an improved variant of the Faure-Loidreau (FL) system, which was broken in a structural attack by Gaborit, Otmani, and Talé Kalachi (GOT, 2018). We keep the FL encryption and decryption algorithms, but modify the insecure key generation algorithm. Our crucial observation is that the GOT attack is equivalent to decoding an interleaved Gabidulin code. The new key generation algorithm constructs public keys for which all polynomial-time i…
Min-Sum decoding is widely used for decoding LDPC codes in many modern digital video broadcasting decoding due to its relative low complexity and robustness against quantization error. However, the suboptimal performance of the Min-Sum affects the integrated performance of wireless receivers. In this paper, we present the idea of adapting the scaling factor of the Min-Sum decoder with iterations through a simple approximation. For the ease of implementation the scaling factor can be changed in a staircase fashion. The stair step is designed to optimize the decoder performance and the required …
In this paper, we present a fast min-sum algorithm for decoding LDPC codes over GF(q). Our algorithm is different from the one presented by David Declercq and Marc Fossorier in ISIT 05 only at the way of speeding up the horizontal scan in the min-sum algorithm. The Declercq and Fossorier's algorithm speeds up the computation by reducing the number of configurations, while our algorithm uses the dynamic programming instead. Compared with the configuration reduction algorithm, the dynamic programming one is simpler at the design stage because it has less parameters to tune. Furthermore, it does …
Non-binary low-density parity-check codes are robust to various channel impairments. However, based on the existing decoding algorithms, the decoder implementations are expensive because of their excessive computational complexity and memory usage. Based on the combinatorial optimization, we present an approximation method for the check node processing. The simulation results demonstrate that our scheme has small performance loss over the additive white Gaussian noise channel and independent Rayleigh fading channel. Furthermore, the proposed reduced-complexity realization provides significant …
