A curve is rectifying if it lies on a moving hyperplane orthogonal to its curvature vector. In this work, we extend the main result of [Chen 2017, Tamkang J. Math. 48, 209] to any space dimension: we prove that rectifying curves are geodesics on hypercones. We later use this association to characterize rectifying curves that are also slant helices in three-dimensional space as geodesics of circular cones. In addition, we consider curves that lie on a moving hyperplane normal to (i) one of the normal vector fields of the Frenet frame and to (ii) a rotation minimizing vector field along the curve. The former class is characterized in terms of the constancy of a certain vector field normal to the curve, while the latter contains spherical and plane curves. Finally, we establish a formal mapping between rectifying curves in an $(m + 2)$-dimensional space and spherical curves in an $(m + 1)$-dimensional space. A curve is rectifying if it lies on a moving hyperplane orthogonal to its curvature vector.
In this paper, we study helices and the Bertrand curves. We obtain some of the classification results of these curves with respect to the modified orthogonal frame in Euclidean 3-spaces.
In this paper, we investigate Mannheim pairs, Frenet-Mannheim curves and Weakened Mannheim curves with respect to the modified orthogonal frame in Euclidean 3-space(E 3 ). We obtain some characterizations of these curves.
In this paper we deal with curves with degeneration degree two in pseudo-Euclidean spaces of index two. We characterize Bertrand curves. We show a correspondence between the evolute of a null curve and the involute of a certain spacelike curve in the $6-$dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space of index two. Also we characterize pseudo-spherical null curves in the $n-$dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space of index two in terms of the curvature functions.
In this paper, we introduce the quaternionic similar curves in 4-dimensional Euclidean space. We show that the families of quaternionic curves with vanishing curvatures form the families of quaternionic similar curves.
A Bertrand curve in the 4-dimensional Euclidean space is a space curve whose first normal line is the same as the first normal line of another curve. On the other hand, a Mannheim curve in the 4-dimensional Euclidean space is a space curve whose first normal line is the same as the second or third normal line of another curve. By definitions, another curve is a parallel curve with respect to the direction of the first normal vector. As smooth curves with singular points, we consider framed curves in the Euclidean space. Then we define and investigate Bertrand and Mannheim curves of framed curv…
We investigate the relationship among characteristic curves on developable surfaces. In case parameter curves coincide with these curves, we show that the base curve of a developable surface could be either a plane curve, a circular helix, a general helix or a slant helix.
In [18], L. R. Pears proved that Bertrand curves in E-n(n > 3) are degenerate curves. This result restate in [16] by Matsuda and Yorozu. They proved that there is no special Bertrand curves in E-n(n > 3) and they define new kind of Bertrand curves called (1, 3)-type Bertrand curves in 4-dimensional Euclidean space. In this study, we define a quaternionic Bertrand curve ?(4) in Euclidean space E4 and investigate its properties for two cases. In the first case; we consider quaternionic Bertrand curve in the Euclidean space E4 for r-K = 0 where r is the torsion of the spatial quaternionic curve ?…
We introduce circular evolutes and involutes of framed curves in the Euclidean space. Circular evolutes of framed curves stem from the curvature circles of Bishop directions and singular value sets of normal surfaces of Bishop directions. On the other hand, involutes of framed curves are direct generalizations of involutes of regular space curves and frontals in the Euclidean plane. We investigate properties of normal surfaces, circular evolutes, and involutes of framed curves. We can observe that taking circular evolutes and involutes of framed curves are opposite operations under suitable as…
In this study we consider AW(k)-type curves according to parallel transport frame in Euclidean space E^4. We give the relations between the parallel transport curvatures of these kinds of curves.
In this work, first, we express some characterizations of helices and ccr curves in the Euclidean 4-space. Thereafter, relations among Frenet-Serret invariants of Bertrand curve of a helix are presented. Moreover, in the same space, some new characterizations of involute of a helix are presented.
In this article, we study rectifying curves in arbitrary dimensional Euclidean space. A curve is said to be a rectifying curve if, in all points of the curve, the orthogonal complement of its normal vector contains a fixed point. We characterize rectifying curves in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space in different ways: using conditions on their curvatures, using an expression for the tangential component, the normal component or the binormal components of their position vector, and by constructing them starting from an arclength parameterized curve on the unit hypersphere.
A complete system of differential invariants for equivalence of curves in the $n$-dimensional pseudo-euclidean space with respect to the action of each of the groups $K^n \lhd O(n,p,K)$, $K^n \lhd SO(n,p,K)$, $O(n,p,K)$, and $SO(n,p,K)$, where $K = \mathbf{R}$, or $K = \mathbf{C}$, and $O(n,p,K)$ $\bigl($respectively, $SO(n,p,K)\big)$ are a pseudo-orthogonal (special pseudo-orthogonal) groups, is given.
A twisted curve in Euclidean 3-space E^3 can be considered as a curve whose position vector can be written as linear combination of its Frenet vectors. In the present study we study the twisted curves of constant ratio in E^3 and characterize such curves in terms of their curvature functions. Further, we obtain some results of T-constant and N-constant type twisted curves in E^3. Finally, we give some examples of equiangular spirals which are constant ratio curves.
In this paper, we study spinor Bishop equations of curves in E^3. We research the spinor formulations of curves according to Bishop frames in E^3. Also, the relation between spinor formulations of Bishop frames and Frenet frame are expressed.
The well known formulas express the curvature and the torsion of a curve in $R^3$ in terms of euclidean invariants of its derivatives. We obtain expressions of this kind for all curvatures of curves in $R^n$. It follows that a curve in $R^n$ is determined up to an isometry by the norms of its n derivatives. We extend these observations to curves in arbitrary riemannian manifolds.
In this work, we studied the properties of the spherical indicatrices of involute curve of a space curve and presented some characteristic properties in the cases that involute curve and evolute curve are slant helices and helices, spherical indicatrices are slant helices and helices and we introduced new representations of spherical indicatrices.
In this paper we consider the idea of Bertrand curves for curves lying on surfaces and by considering the Darboux frames of them we define these curves as Bertrand D-curves and give the characterizations for these curves. We also find the relations between the geodesic curvatures, the normal curvatures and the geodesic torsions of these associated curves. Furthermore, we show that the definition and the characterizations of Bertrand D-curves include those of Bertrand curves in some special cases.
In this paper we consider the idea of Mannheim partner curves for curves lying on surfaces and by considering the Darboux frames of them we define these curves as Mannheim partner D-curves and give the characterizations for these curves. We also find the relations between the geodesic curvatures, the normal curvatures and the geodesic torsions of these associated curves. Furthermore, we show that the definition and the characterizations of Mannheim partner D-curves include those of Mannheim partner curves in some special cases.
We present a method to construct a large family of Lagrangian surfaces in complex Euclidean plane by using Legendre curves in the 3-sphere and in the anti de Sitter 3-space or, equivalently, by using spherical and hyperbolic curves, respectively. Among this family, we characterize minimal, constant mean curvature, Hamiltonian-minimal and Willmore surfaces in terms of simple properties of the curvature of the generating curves. As applications, we provide explicitly conformal parametrizations of known and new examples of minimal, constant mean curvature, Hamiltonian-minimal and Willmore surface…
The problem of the invariant classification of the orthogonal coordinate webs defined in Euclidean space is solved within the framework of Felix Klein's Erlangen Program. The results are applied to the problem of integrability of the Calogero-Moser model.
In this study, we define the generalized normal ruled surface of a curve in the Euclidean 3-space $E^3$. We study the geometry of such surfaces by calculating the Gaussian and mean curvatures to determine when the surface is flat or minimal (equivalently, helicoid). We examine the conditions for the curves lying on this surface to be asymptotic curves, geodesics or lines of curvature. Finally, we obtain the Frenet vectors of generalized normal ruled surface and get some relations with helices and slant ruled surfaces and we give some examples for the obtained results.
In this paper, we study spherical images of the modified orthogonal vector fields and Darboux vector of a regular curve which lies on the unit sphere in Euclidean 3-space.
In this paper, it is proved that, no special timelike Frenet curve is a Bertrand curve in $\mathbb{E}_2^4$ and also, in $\mathbb{E}_ν^{n+1}$ $ ({n \ge 3})$, such that the notion of Bertrand curve is definite only in $\mathbb{E}_1^2$ and $\mathbb{E}_1^3$. Therefore, a generalization of timelike Bertrand curve is defined and called as timelike (1,3)-Bertrand curve in $\mathbb{E}_2^4$. Moreover, the characterization of timelike (1,3)-Bertrand curve is given in $\mathbb{E}_2^4$.
We introduce a new method to construct a large family of Lagrangian surfaces in complex Euclidean plane by means of two planar curves making use of their usual product as complex functions and integrating the Hermitian product of their position and tangent vectors. Among this family, we characterize minimal, constant mean curvature, Hamiltonian stationary, solitons for mean curvature flow and Willmore surfaces in terms of simple properties of the curvatures of the generating curves. As an application, we provide explicitly conformal parametrizations of known and new examples of these classes o…
In this paper, we investigate sufficient condition for the invariance of a rectifying curve on a smooth surface immersed in Euclidean 3-space under isometry by using Darboux frame $\left\lbrace T, P, U\right\rbrace$. Further, we find the deviations of the position vector of a rectifying curve on the smooth surface along any tangent vector $T = aϕ_u + bϕ_v$ with respect to the isometry. We also find the deviations of the position vector of a rectifying curve on the smooth surface along the unit normal $U$ to the surface and along $P (= U \times T)$ with respect to the isometry.
In this paper, we study the spherical indicatrices of W-direction curves in three dimensional Euclidean space which were defined by using the unit Darboux vector field W of a Frenet curve, in [11]. We obtain the Frenet apparatus of these spherical indicatrix curves and the characterizations of being general helix and slant helix. Moreover we give some properties between the spherical indicatrix curves and their associated curves. Then we investigate two special ruled surface that are normal and binormal surface by using W-direction curves. We give useful results involving the char- acterizatio…
In this work, we give parallel transport frame of a curve and we introduce the relations between the frame and Frenet frame of the curve in 4-dimensional Euclidean space. The relation which is well known in Euclidean 3-space is generalized for the first time in 4-dimensional Euclidean space. Then we obtain the condition for spherical curves using the parallel transport frame of them. The condition in terms of κand τ is so complicated but in terms of k_{1} and k_{2} is simple. So, parallel transport frame is important to make easy some complicated characterizations. Moreover, we characterize cu…
We investigate in detail the class of Euclidean affine Kac-Moody symmetric spaces and their orthogonal symmetric affine Kac-Moody algebras (OSAKAs). These spaces are the only class of Kac-Moody symmetric spaces, that is not directly derived from affine Kac-Moody algebras in the classical sense.
In this work, we studied the properties of the spherical indicatrices of a Bertrand curve and its mate curve and presented some characteristic properties in the cases that Bertrand curve and its mate curve are slant helices, spherical indicatrices are slant helices and we also researched that whether the spherical indicatrices made new curve pairs in the means of Mannheim, involte-evolute and Bertrand pairs. Further more, we investigated the relations between the spherical images and introduced new representations of spherical indicatrices.
In this work, we give some new characterizations for inclined curves and slant helices in n-dimensional Euclidean space E^{n}. Morever, we consider the pre-characterizations about inclined curves and slant helices and reconfigure them.
In this study, we investigate the locus of the centers of the Meusnier spheres. Just as focal curve is the locus of the centers of the osculating spheres, we investigate the geometrical interpretation on the locus of the centers of the Meusnier spheres. We proved that if the curve is a principal line, the locus of the centers of the Meusnier spheres of the curve is an evolute curve. Then, we give the relations between this evolute curve and the focal curve. Also, we give some relations between helices, slant helices and the locus of the centers of the Meusnier spheres of the curve.
We find algebraic parametrizations of extended solutions of harmonic maps of finite uniton number from a surface to the orthogonal group O(n) in terms of free holomorphic data which lead to formulae for all such harmonic maps. Our work reveals an interesting correspondence between certain harmonic maps and the free Weierstrass representation of null curves and minimal surfaces in 3- and 4-space.
In this paper, we study the special curves and ruled surfaces on helix hypersurface whose tangent planes make a constant angle with a fixed direction in Euclidean n-space Besides, we observe some special ruled surfaces in and give requirement of being developable of the ruled surface. Also, we investigate the helix surface generated by a plane curve in Euclidean 3-space .
We study the limiting case of the Krichever construction of orthogonal curvilinear coordinate systems when the spectral curve becomes singular. We show that the case when the curve is reducible and all its irreducible components are rational curves the construction procedure reduces to solving systems of linear equations and simple computations with elementary functions. Therewith we demonstrate how such well-known coordinate systems as the polar coordinates, the cylindrical coordinates in the three-space, and the spherical coordinates in the Euclidean spaces fit in this scheme.
We investigate the vertex curve, that is the set of points in the hyperbolic region of a smooth surface in real 3-space at which there is a circle in the tangent plane having at least 5-point contact with the surface. The vertex curve is related to the differential geometry of planar sections of the surface parallel to and close to the tangent planes, and to the symmetry sets of isophote curves, that is level sets of intensity in a 2-dimensional image. We investigate also the relationship of the vertex curve with the parabolic and flecnodal curves, and the evolution of the vertex curve in a ge…
In [5], Matsuda and Yorozo obtained that Mannheim curves in 4-dimensional Euclidean space. In this study, we define quaternionic Mannheim curves and we give some characterizations of them in Euclidean 3-space and 4-space.
It is well known that the space of oriented lines of Euclidean space has a natural symplectic structure. Moreover, given an immersed, oriented hypersurface S the set of oriented lines that cross S orthogonally is a Lagrangian submanifold. Conversely, if \bar{S} an n-dimensional family of oriented lines is Lagrangian, there exists, locally, a 1-parameter family of immersed, oriented, parallel hypersurfaces S_t whose tangent spaces cross orthogonally the lines of \bar{S}. The purpose of this paper is to generalize these facts to higher dimension: to any point x of a submanifold S of R^m of dimen…
In classical differential geometry, the problem of the determination of the position vector of an arbitrary space curve according to the intrinsic equations $κ=κ(s)$ and $τ=τ(s)$ (where $κ$ and $τ$ are the curvature and torsion of the space curve $ψ$, respectively) is still open \cite{eisenh, lips}. However, in the case of a plane curve, helix and general helix, this problem is solved. In this paper, we solved this problem in the case of a slant helix. Also, we applied this method to find the representation of a Salkowski, anti-Salkowski curves and a curve of constant precession, as examples o…
We consider a unit speed curve $α$ in Euclidean four-dimensional space $E^4$ and denote the Frenet frame by $\{T,N,B_1,B_2\}$. We say that $α$ is a slant helix if its principal normal vector $N$ makes a constant angle with a fixed direction $U$. In this work we give different characterizations of such curves in terms of their curvatures.
In this study, we define a family of ruled surfaces in the Euclidean 3-space E^3 and called similar ruled surfaces. We obtain some properties of these special surfaces and we show that developable ruled surfaces form a family of similar ruled surfaces if and only if the striction curves of the surfaces are similar curves with variable transformation.
We deal with a robust notion of weak normals for a wide class of irregular curves defined in Euclidean spaces of high dimension. Concerning polygonal curves, the discrete normals are built up through a Gram-Schmidt procedure applied to consecutive oriented segments, and they naturally live in the projective space associated to the Gauss hyper-sphere. By using sequences of inscribed polygonals with infinitesimal modulus, a relaxed notion of total variation of the $j$-th normal to a generic curve is then introduced. For smooth curves satisfying the Jordan system, in fact, our relaxed notion agre…
We study surfaces in Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^3$ that are minimal for a log-linear density $ϕ(x,y,z)=αx+βy+γy$, where $α,β,γ$ are real numbers not all zero. We prove that if a surface is $ϕ$-minimal foliated by circles in parallel planes, then these planes are orthogonal to the vector $(α,β,γ)$ and the surface must be rotational. We also classify all minimal surfaces of translation type.
We study those Lagrangian surfaces in complex Euclidean space which are foliated by circles or by straight lines. The former, which we call cyclic, come in three types, each one being described by means of, respectively, a planar curve, a Legendrian curve of the 3-sphere or a Legendrian curve of the anti de Sitter 3-space. We also describe ruled Lagrangian surfaces. Finally we characterize those cyclic and ruled Lagrangian surfaces which are solutions to the self-similar equation of the Mean Curvature Flow. Finally, we give a partial result in the case of Hamiltonian stationary cyclic surfaces…
For Legendre curves, we consider surfaces of revolution of frontals. The surface of revolution of a frontal can be considered as a framed base surface. We give the curvatures and basic invariants for surfaces of revolution by using the curvatures of Legendre curves. Moreover, we give properties of surfaces of revolution with singularities and cones.
Using certain solutions of the curve shortening flow, including self-shrinking and self-expanding curves or spirals, we construct and characterize many new examples of translating solitons for mean curvature flow in complex Euclidean plane. They generalize the Joyce, Lee and Tsui ones \cite{JLT} in dimension two. The simplest (non trivial) example in our family is characterized as the only (non totally geodesic) Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian translating soliton for mean curvature flow in complex Euclidean plane.
In this work, we study a class of rotational surfaces in the pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}_2^4$ whose profile curves lie in two-dimensional planes. We solve the differential equation that characterizes the rotational surfaces with zero mean curvature to determine the profile curves of such rotational surfaces. Then, we give some explicit parametrization of maximal rotational surfaces and the timelike surfaces with zero mean curvature in $\mathbb{E}_2^4$.
A Euclidean minimal torus with planar ends gives rise to an immersed Willmore torus in the conformal 3--sphere $S^3=\R^3\cup \{\infty\}$. The class of Willmore tori obtained this way is given a spectral theoretic characterization as the class of Willmore tori with reducible spectral curve. A spectral curve of this type is necessarily the double of the spectral curve of an elliptic KP soliton. The simplest possible examples of minimal tori with planar ends are related to 1--gap Lamé potentials, the simplest non--trivial algebro geometric KdV potentials. If one allows for translational periods, …
Using the idea of special Legendre curves, the authors obtained the explicit description of flat Lagrangian H-umbilical submanifolds in quaternion Euclidean spaces.
In this article, we investigate Bertrand curves corresponding to the spherical images of the tangent, binormal, principal normal and Darboux indicatrices of a space curve in Euclidean 3-space. As a result, in case of a space curve is a general helix, we show that the curves corresponding to the spherical images of its the tangent indicatrix and binormal indicatrix are both Bertrand curves and circular helices. Similarly, in case of a space curve is a slant helix, we demonstrate that the curve corresponding to the spherical image of its the principal normal indicatrix is both a Bertrand curve a…
