We study those Lagrangian surfaces in complex Euclidean space which are foliated by circles or by straight lines. The former, which we call cyclic, come in three types, each one being described by means of, respectively, a planar curve, a Legendrian curve of the 3-sphere or a Legendrian curve of the anti de Sitter 3-space. We also describe ruled Lagrangian surfaces. Finally we characterize those cyclic and ruled Lagrangian surfaces which are solutions to the self-similar equation of the Mean Curvature Flow. Finally, we give a partial result in the case of Hamiltonian stationary cyclic surfaces.
In this paper, we study the special curves and ruled surfaces on helix hypersurface whose tangent planes make a constant angle with a fixed direction in Euclidean n-space Besides, we observe some special ruled surfaces in and give requirement of being developable of the ruled surface. Also, we investigate the helix surface generated by a plane curve in Euclidean 3-space .
This paper gives, in generic situations, a complete classification of ruled minimal surfaces in pseudo-Euclidean space with arbitrary index. In addition, we discuss the condition for ruled minimal surfaces to exist, and give a counter-example on the problem of Bernstein type.
In this study, we define a family of ruled surfaces in the Euclidean 3-space E^3 and called similar ruled surfaces. We obtain some properties of these special surfaces and we show that developable ruled surfaces form a family of similar ruled surfaces if and only if the striction curves of the surfaces are similar curves with variable transformation.
In this study, we give the relationships between the conical curvatures of ruled surfaces drawn by the unit vectors of the ruling, central normal and central tangent of a regular ruled surface in the Euclidean -space. We obtain the differential equations characterizing slant ruled surfaces and if the reference ruled surface is a slant ruled surface, we give some conditions for the surfaces drawn by the central normal and the central tangent vectors to be slant ruled surfaces.
In this study, we define the generalized normal ruled surface of a curve in the Euclidean 3-space $E^3$. We study the geometry of such surfaces by calculating the Gaussian and mean curvatures to determine when the surface is flat or minimal (equivalently, helicoid). We examine the conditions for the curves lying on this surface to be asymptotic curves, geodesics or lines of curvature. Finally, we obtain the Frenet vectors of generalized normal ruled surface and get some relations with helices and slant ruled surfaces and we give some examples for the obtained results.
In the present paper, a new type of ruled surfaces called osculating-type (OT)-ruled surface is introduced and studied. First, a new orthonormal frame is defined for OT-ruled surfaces. The Gaussian and the mean curvatures of these surfaces are obtained and the conditions for an OT-surface to be flat or minimal are given. Moreover, the Weingarten map of an OT-ruled surface is obtained and the normal curvature, the geodesic curvature and the geodesic torsion of any curve lying on surface are obtained. Finally, some examples related to helices and slant helices are introduced.
We consider ruled and quadric surfaces in the 3-dimensional Euclidean space which are of coordinate finite type with respect to the third fundamental form $III$, i.e., their position vector $\boldsymbol{x}$ satisfies the relation $Δ^{III}\boldsymbol{x}=\varLambda \boldsymbol{x}$ where $\varLambda $ is a square matrix of order 3. We show that helicoids and spheres are the only surfaces in $E^3$ satisfying the preceding relation.
This paper deals with relative normalizations of skew ruled surfaces in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^{3}$. In section 2 we investigate some new formulae concerning the Pick invariant, the relative curvature, the relative mean curvature and the curvature of the relative metric of a relatively normalized ruled surface $\varPhi$ and in section 3 we introduce some special normalizations of it. All ruled surfaces and their corresponding normalizations that make $\varPhi$ an improper or a proper relative sphere are determined in section 4. In the last section we study ruled surfaces, which are \e…
We characterize all ruled translating solitons in Minkowski 3-space. In contrast to the Euclidean space, we find ruled translating solitons that are not cylindrical. These surfaces appear when the vector field that defines the rulings, viewed as a curve, is a lightlike straight line. We also classify all cylindrical translating solitons, obtaining surfaces that can be considered as analogous to the grim reapers of Euclidean space, but also other surfaces which have no a counterpart in the Euclidean space.
It is well known that the only surfaces that are simultaneously minimal in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and maximal in $\mathbb{L}^3$ are open pieces of helicoids (in the region in which they are spacelike) and of spacelike planes (O. Kobayashi 1983). The proof of this result consists in showing that the level curves of those surfaces are lines, and so the surfaces are ruled. And it finishes comparing the classification of minimal ruled surfaces to that of maximal ruled surfaces. In this manuscript we consider the general case of spacelike hypersurfaces in the $(n+1)$-dimensional Euclidean space which are s…
In this study, we define some new types of ruled surfaces called slant ruled surfaces. We give some characterizations for a regular ruled surface to be a slant ruled surface in Euclidean 3- space. We show that if the slant ruled surface is developable then the striction curve is a general helix or a slant helix according to the kind of surface. Moreover, we give the relationships between slant ruled surfaces and some offset surfaces such as Bertrand offsets and Mannheim offsets.
In this study, we introduce Darboux slant ruled surfaces in the Euclidean 3-space which is defined by the property that the Darboux vector of orthonormel frame of ruled surface makes a constant angle with a fixed, non-zero direction. We obtain the characterizations of Darboux slant ruled surfaces regarding the conical curvature kappa and give the relations between Darboux slant ruled surfaces and some other slant ruled surfaces.
In this paper, we study ruled surfaces and quadrics in the 3-dimensional Euclidean space which are of finite $III$-type, that is, they are of finite type, in the sense of B.-Y. Chen, with respect to the third fundamental form. We show that helicoids and spheres are the only ruled and quadric surfaces of finite $III$-type, respectively.
In Euclidean space, we investigate surfaces whose mean curvature $H$ satisfies the equation $H=α\langle N,\mathbf{x}\rangle+λ$, where $N$ is the Gauss map, $\mathbf{x}$ is the position vector and $α$ and $λ$ are two constants. There surfaces generalize self-shrinkers and self-expanders of the mean curvature flow. We classify the ruled surfaces and the translation surfaces, proving that they are cylindrical surfaces.
This paper deals with skew ruled surfaces in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^{3}$ which are equipped with polar normalizations, that is, relative normalizations such that the relative normal at each point of the ruled surface lies on the corresponding polar plane. We determine the invariants of a such normalized ruled surface and we study some properties of the Tchebychev vector field and the support vector field of a polar normalization. Furthermore, we study a special polar normalization, the relative image of which degenerates into a curve.
We consider relative normalizations of ruled surfaces with non-vanishing Gaussian curvature $K$ in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R} ^{3}$, which are characterized by the support functions $^{\left( α\right) }q=\left \vert K\right \vert ^α$ for $α\in \mathbb{R}$ (Manhart's relative normalizations). All ruled surfaces for which the relative normals, the Pick invariant or the Tchebychev vector field have some specific properties are determined. We conclude the paper by the study of the affine normal image of a non-conoidal ruled surface.
We consider the Laplace normal vector field of relatively normalized ruled surfaces with non-vanishing Gaussian curvature in the three-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. We determine all ruled surfaces and all relative normalizations for which the Laplace normal image degenerates into a point or into a curve. Moreover, we study the Laplace normal image of a non-conoidal ruled surface whose relative normals lie on the asymptotic plane.
Our goal is to generalize the Choe-Hoppe helicoid and Clifford cones in Euclidean space. By sweeping out $L$ indpendent Clifford cones in ${\mathbb{R}}^{2N+2}$ via the multi-screw motion, we construct minimal submanifolds in ${\mathbb{R}}^{L(2N+2)+1}$. Also, we sweep out the $L$-rays Clifford cone (introduced in Section 2.3) in ${\mathbb{R}}^{L(2N+2)}$ to construct minimal submanifolds in ${\mathbb{R}}^{L(2N+2)+1}$. Our minimal submanifolds unify various interesting examples: Choe-Hoppe's helicoid of codimension one, cone over Lawson's ruled minimal surfaces in ${\mathbb{S}}^{3}$, Barbosa-Dajc…
We prove that the only self-similar surfaces of Euclidean 3-space which are foliated by circles are the self-similar surfaces of revolution discovered by S. Angenent and that the only ruled, self-similar surfaces are the cylinders over planar self-similar curves.
We consider hypersurfaces in the real Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ ($n\geq2$) which are relatively normalized. We give necessary and sufficient conditions a) for a surface of negative Gaussian curvature in $\mathbb{R}^3$ to be ruled, b) for a hypersurface of positive Gaussian curvature in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ to be a hyperquadric and c) for a relative normalization to be constantly proportional to the equiaffine normalization.
In this paper, we study the spherical indicatrices of W-direction curves in three dimensional Euclidean space which were defined by using the unit Darboux vector field W of a Frenet curve, in [11]. We obtain the Frenet apparatus of these spherical indicatrix curves and the characterizations of being general helix and slant helix. Moreover we give some properties between the spherical indicatrix curves and their associated curves. Then we investigate two special ruled surface that are normal and binormal surface by using W-direction curves. We give useful results involving the char- acterizatio…
This paper deals with skew ruled surfaces $\varPhi$ in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^{3}$ which are right normalized, that is they are equipped with relative normalizations, whose support function is of the form $q(u,v) = \frac{f(u) + g(u)\, v}{w(u,v)}$, where $w^2(u,v)$ is the discriminant of the first fundamental form of $\varPhi$. This class of relatively normalized ruled surfaces contains surfaces such that their relative image $\varPhi^{*}$ is either a curve or it is as well as $\varPhi$ a ruled surface whose generators are, additionally, parallel to those of $\varPhi$. Moreover we inve…
We consider a skew ruled surface $Φ$ in the Euclidean space $E^{3}$ and relative normalizations of it, so that the relative normals at each point lie in the corresponding asymptotic plane of $Φ$. We call such relative normalizations and the resulting relative images of $Φ$ \emph{asymptotic}. We determine all ruled surfaces and the asymptotic normalizations of them, for which $Φ$ is a relative sphere (proper or inproper) or the asymptotic image degenerates into a curve. Moreover we study the sequence of the ruled surfaces ${Ψ_{i}}_{i\in \mathbb{N}}$, where $Ψ_{1}$ is an asymptotic image of $Φ$ …
We classify 4-dimensional austere submanifolds in Euclidean space ruled by 2-planes. The algebraic possibilities for second fundamental forms of an austere 4-fold M were classified by Bryant, falling into three types which we label A, B, and C. We show that if M is 2-ruled of Type A, then the ruling map from M into the Grassmannian of 2-planes in R^n is holomorphic, and we give a construction for M starting with a holomorphic curve in an appropriate twistor space. If M is 2-ruled of Type B, then M is either a generalized helicoid in R^6 or the product of two classical helicoids in R^3. If M is…
We consider ruled surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space and some geometrically distinguished families of curves on them whose normal curvature has a concrete form. The aim of this paper is to find and classify all ruled surfaces with the mentioned property
Any ruled surface in Euclidean 3-space is described as a curve of unit dual vectors in the algebra of dual quaternions (=the even Clifford algebra of type (0,3,1)). Combining this classical framework and Singularity Theory, we characterize local diffeomorphic types of singular ruled surfaces in terms of geometric invariants. In particular, using a theorem of G. Ishikawa, we show that local topological type of singular (non-cylindrical) developable surfaces is completely determined by vanishing order of the dual torsion, that generalizes an old result of D. Mond for tangent developables of non-…
A Laguerre minimal surface is an immersed surface in the Euclidean space being an extremal of the functional \int (H^2/K - 1) dA. In the present paper, we prove that the only ruled Laguerre minimal surfaces are up to isometry the surfaces R(u,v) = (Au, Bu, Cu + D cos 2u) + v (sin u, cos u, 0), where A, B, C, D are fixed real numbers. To achieve invariance under Laguerre transformations, we also derive all Laguerre minimal surfaces that are enveloped by a family of cones. The methodology is based on the isotropic model of Laguerre geometry. In this model a Laguerre minimal surface enveloped by …
It is known that the class of developable surfaces which have zero Gaussian curvature in three dimensional Euclidean space is preserved by the parallel transformations. A tangent developable surface is defined as a ruled developable surface by tangent lines to a space curve and it has singularities at least along the space curve, called the directrix or the the edge of regression. Also the class of tangent developable surfaces are invariant under the parallel deformations. In this paper the notions of tangent developable surfaces and their parallels are naturally generalized for frontal curves…
We investigate minimal helix submanifolds of any dimension and codimension immersed in Euclidean space. Our main result proves that a ruled minimal helix submanifold is a cylinder. As an application we classify complex helix submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}^n$: They are extrinsic products with a complex line as a factor. The key tool is Corollary 1.3 which allows us to classify Riemannian foliations of open subsets of the Euclidean space with minimal leaves. Finally, we consider the case of a helix hypersurface with constant mean curvature and prove that it is either a cylinder or an open part of a…
In this paper, we analyze the geometric structure of an Euclidean submanifold whose osculating spaces form a nonconstant family of proper subspaces of the same dimension. We prove that if the rate of change of the osculating spaces is small, then the submanifold must be a (submanifold of a) ruled submanifold of a very special type. We also give a sharp estimate of the dimension of the rulings.
We study Lagrangian points on smooth holomorphic curves in T${\mathbb P}^1$ equipped with a natural neutral Kähler structure, and prove that they must form real curves. By virtue of the identification of T${\mathbb P}^1$ with the space ${\mathbb L}({\mathbb E}^3)$ of oriented affine lines in Euclidean 3-space ${\mathbb E}^3$, these Lagrangian curves give rise to ruled surfaces in ${\mathbb E}^3$, which we prove have zero Gauss curvature. Each ruled surface is shown to be the tangent lines to a curve in ${\mathbb E}^3$, called the edge of regression of the ruled surface. We give an alternative …
We investigate the well-known Loday-Quillen-Tsygan theorem, which calculates the Lie algebra homology of the general linear algebra $\mathfrak{gl}(A)$ for an associative algebra $A$ in terms of cyclic homology, and extend the proof to bornological Lie algebra homology of Fréchet and LF-algebras. For Fréchet spaces, this equals continuous Lie algebra homology. To this end we prepare several statements about homological algebra of topological vector spaces, and discuss when the differential of the bornological Hochschild and cyclic complex are topological homomorphisms in the setting of Fréchet …
