We present the basic ideas of the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach which is a microscopic covariant dynamical model for strongly interacting systems formulated on the basis of Kadanoff-Baym equations for Green's functions in phase-space representation (in 1st order gradient expansion beyond the quasi-particle approximation). The approach consistently describes the full evolution of a relativistic heavy-ion collision from the initial hard scatterings and string formation through the dynamical deconfinement phase transition to the strongly-interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) as well as hadronization and the subsequent interactions in the expanding hadronic phase. The PHSD approach has been applied to p+p, p+A and A+A collisions from lower SIS to LHC energies and been successful in describing a large number of experimental data including single-particle spectra, collective flow and electromagnetic probes. Some highlights of recent PHSD results will be presented.
We study the production of hadrons in nucleus-nucleus collisions within the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach that is extended to incorporate essentials aspects of chiral symmetry restoration (CSR) in the hadronic sector (via the Schwinger mechanism) on top of the deconfinement phase transition as implemented in PHSD. The essential impact of CSR is found in the Schwinger mechanism (for string decay) which fixes the ratio of strange to light quark production in the hadronic medium. Our studies provide a microscopic explanation for the maximum in the $K^+/π^+$ ratio at abou…
Dilepton production in In+In collisions at 158 AGeV is studied within the microscopic Parton-Hadron-Strings Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach, which is based on a dynamical quasiparticle model (DQPM) matched to reproduce lattice QCD results in thermodynamic equilibrium. A comparison to the data of the NA60 Collaboration shows that the low mass dilepton spectra are well described by including a collisional broadening of vector mesons, while the spectra in the intermediate mass range are dominated by off-shell quark-antiquark annihilation in the nonperturbative QGP. In particular, the observed …
We study the shear and bulk viscosities of partonic and hadronic matter as functions of temperature T within the parton-hadron-string dynamics (PHSD) off-shell transport approach. Dynamical hadronic and partonic systems in equilibrium are studied by the PHSD simulations in a finite box with periodic boundary conditions. The ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density η(T)/s(T) from PHSD shows a minimum (with a value of about 0.1) close to the critical temperature T_c, while it approaches the perturbative QCD limit at higher temperatures in line with lattice QCD (lQCD) results. For T<T_c, i…
Dilepton production in In+In collisions at 158 AGeV is studied within the microscopic parton-hadron-string dynamics (PHSD) transport approach that incorporates explicit partonic degrees-of-freedom, dynamical hadronization as well as the more familiar hadronic dynamics in the final reaction stages. A comparison to the data of the NA60 Collaboration shows that the measured dilepton yield is well described by including the collisional broadening of vector mesons, while simultaneously accounting for the electromagnetic radiation of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) via off-shell quark…
The dynamics of partons and hadrons in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is analyzed within the novel Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach, which is based on a dynamical quasiparticle model for the partonic phase (DQPM) including a dynamical hadronization scheme. The PHSD approach is applied to nucleus-nucleus collisions from low SPS to LHC energies. The traces of partonic interactions are found in particular in the elliptic flow of hadrons and in their transverse mass spectra. We investigate also the equilibrium properties of strongly-interacting infinite parton-hadro…
The dilepton transverse momentum spectra and invariant mass spectra for low $p_T <0.15$~GeV/c in Au+Au collisions of different centralities at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV are studied within the parton-hadron-string dynamics (PHSD) transport approach. The PHSD describes the whole evolution of the system on a microscopic basis, incorporates hadronic and partonic degrees-of-freedom, the dynamical hadronization of partons and hadronic rescattering. For dilepton production in p+p, p+A and A+A reactions the PHSD incorporates the leading hadronic and partonic channels (also for heavy flavors) and inclu…
We study the hadron production in $p+p$, $p+n$ and $n+n$ reactions within the microscopic Parton-Hadron-Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach in comparison to PYTHIA 8.2. We discuss the details of the "PHSD tune" of the Lund string model (realized by event generators FRITIOF and PYTHIA) in the vacuum (as in $N+N$ collisions) as well as its in-medium modifications relevant for heavy-ion collisions where a hot and dense matter is produced. We compare the results of PHSD and PYTHIA 8.2 (default version) for the excitation function of hadron multiplicities as well as differential rapidity $y$, transv…
The azimuthal anisotropies of the collective transverse flow of charged hadrons are investigated in a wide range of heavy-ion collision energies within the microscopic parton-hadron-string dynamics (PHSD) transport approach which incorporates explicit partonic degrees of freedom in terms of strongly interacting quasiparticles (quarks and gluons) in line with an equation of state from lattice QCD as well as the dynamical hadronization and hadronic collision dynamics in the final reaction phase. The experimentally observed increase of the elliptic flow $v_2$ of charged hadrons with collision ene…
We compare the microscopic transport models UrQMD, PHSD, PHQMD, and SMASH to make predictions for the upcoming Ag+Ag data at $E_\mathrm{lab}=1.58$~$A$GeV ($\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=2.55$~GeV) by the HADES collaboration. We study multiplicities, spectra and effective source temperatures of protons, $π^{\pm,0}$, $K^\pm$, the $η$, $Λ+Σ^0$ and the $Ξ^-$ within these models. Despite variations in the detailed implementation of the dynamics in the different models, the employed transport approaches all show consistent multiplicities of the bulk of investigated hadrons. The main differences are in the $Ξ…
We study the dynamics of open charm production and the dilepton radiation of the semi-leptonic decays of correlated $D\bar D$ pairs versus the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) radiation and hadronic sources in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Our study is based on the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach employing a non-perturbative QCD description of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) in terms of dynamical quasiparticles and the EoS based on lattice QCD. We compare the PHSD results for charm observables with the calculations from BAMPS (Boltzmann Approach to Multi…
We study e^+e^- pair production in proton-proton and central Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV within two models: an extended statistical hadronization model (SHM) and the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach. We find that the PHSD calculations roughly agree with the dilepton spectrum from hadronic sources with the 'cocktail' estimates from the statistical hadronization model matched to available data at LHC energies. The dynamical simulations within the PHSD show a moderate increase of the low mass dilepton yield essentially due to the in-medium modification of the rh…
The dynamics of partons, hadrons and strings in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is analyzed within the novel Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach, which is based on a dynamical quasiparticle model for partons (DQPM) matched to reproduce recent lattice-QCD results - including the partonic equation of state - in thermodynamic equilibrium. Scalar- and vector-interaction densities are extracted from the DQPM as well as effective scalar- and vector-mean fields for the partons. The transition from partonic to hadronic degrees of freedom is described by covariant transition…
The directed flow of identified hadrons is studied within the parton-hadron-string-dynamics (PHSD) approach for the asymmetric system Cu+Au in non-central collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. It is emphasized that due to the difference in the number of protons of the colliding nuclei an electric field emerges which is directed from the heavy to the light nucleus. This strong electric field is only present for about 0.25 fm/c at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and leads to a splitting of the directed flow $v_1$ for particles with the same mass but opposite electric charges in case of an early pre…
We study how heavy quark dynamics is affected by the nature of the bulk evolution of the QCD matter, the initial condition of the system, and the treatment of elementary interactions between heavy quarks and the surrounding medium. For the same initial condition and the same QGP expansion scenario we discuss the consequences of the assumption of a local equilibrium by comparing the consequences for the nuclear modification factor and the elliptic flows of charm quarks. For this purpose we employ the parton-hadron-string dynamics (PHSD), which is an off-shell microscopic transport approach, as …
We study the effect of the chiral symmetry restoration (CSR) on heavy-ion collisions observables in the energy range $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 3-20 GeV within the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach. The PHSD includes the deconfinement phase transition as well as essential aspects of CSR in the dense and hot hadronic medium, which are incorporated in the Schwinger mechanism for particle production. Our systematic studies show that chiral symmetry restoration plays a crucial role in the description of heavy-ion collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 3-20 GeV, realizing an increase of the h…
We address the dilepton production from the parton interactions in the early stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions within the parton-hadron-string dynamics (PHSD) off-shell transport approach. The description of partons in PHSD is based on the dynamical quasiparticle model (DQPM) matched to reproduce lattice QCD results in thermodynamic equilibrium. According to the DQPM the constituents of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) are massive and off-shell quasi-particles (quarks and gluons) with broad spectral functions. In order to address the electromagnetic radiation of the …

The transition from hadronic to partonic degrees of freedom in the course of a relativistic heavy-ion collision is described by the microscopic covariant Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach. Studying Pb+Pb reactions from 40 to 158 AGeV and comparing the PHSD results to those of the Hadron-String Dynamics (HSD) approach without a phase transition to the QGP, we observe that the existence of the partonic phase has a sizable influence on the transverse mass distribution of final kaons due to the repulsive partonic mean fields. Furthermore, we find a significant effect of the Q…
We present the novel microscopic n-body dynamical transport approach PHQMD(Parton-Hadron-Quantum-Molecular-Dynamics) for the description of particle production and cluster formation in heavy-ion reactions at relativistic energies. The PHQMD extends the established PHSD (Parton-Hadron-String-Dynamics) transport approach by replacing the mean field by density dependent two body interactions in a similar way as in the Quantum Molecular Dynamics (QMD) models. This allows for the calculation of the time evolution of the n-body Wigner density and therefore for a dynamical description of clusters and…
Cluster and hypernuclei production in heavy-ion collisions is presently under active experimental and theoretical investigation. Since clusters are weekly bound objects, their production is very sensitive to the dynamical evolution of the system and its interactions. The theoretical description of cluster formation is related to the n-body problem. Here we present the novel n-body dynamical transport approach PHQMD (Parton-Hadron-Quantum-Molecular Dynamics) which is designed to provide a microscopic description of nuclear cluster and hypernucleus formation as well as of general particle produc…
A microscopic interpretation of the s and d bosons of the Interacting Boson Model is being suggested: the s, d bosons can be interpreted as symmetric pairs of harmonic oscillator quanta of the valence nuclear shell. Within this interpretation, the SU(3) limit of the Interacting Boson Model results to the Elliott SU(3) symmetry.
Here, we study the neutrinoless double-$β$ ($0νββ$) decay between the ground state and the first $2^+$ state of $^{76}\mbox{Ge} \rightarrow {}^{76}\mbox{Se}$, $^{82}\mbox{Se} \rightarrow{}^{82}\mbox{Kr}$, $^{130}\mbox{Te} \rightarrow {}^{130}\mbox{Xe}$ and $^{136}\mbox{Xe} \rightarrow {}^{136}\mbox{Ba}$ systems. The relevant nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) involved in the process are calculated within the formalism of the microscopic interacting boson model (IBM-2). The IBM-2 has been widely used to obtain predictions for nuclear observables, such as the spectrum, but also to explore the possib…
Dilepton production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is studied within the microscopic Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach, which is based on a dynamical quasiparticle model (DQPM) matched to reproduce lattice QCD results in thermodynamic equilibrium. A comparison to the data of the NA60 Collaboration for In+In collisions at 158 AGeV shows that the dilepton spectra are well described by the sum of hadronic and partonic sources, if a collisional broadening of vector mesons is taken into account as well as the off-shell quark-antiquark annihilation (q+qbar->l^+l^- and q+q…
The particle-hole symmetry (equivalence) of the full shell-model Hilbert space is straightforward and routinely used in practical calculations. In this work we show that this symmetry is preserved in the subspace truncated at a certain generalized seniority, and give the explicit transformation between the states in the two types (particle and hole) of representations. Based on the results, we study the particle-hole symmetry in popular theories that could be regarded as further truncations on top of the generalized seniority, including the microscopic interacting boson (fermion) model, the nu…
A microscopic theory is presented for identifying shape-phase structures and transitions in interacting fermion systems. The method provides a microscopic description for collective shape-phases, and reveals detailed dependence of such shape-phases on microscopic interaction strengths. The theory is generally applicable to fermion systems such as nuclei, quarks, and in particular trapped cold atoms, where shape-phases may be observed and investigated in a controlled manner.
We study the production of strange hadrons in nucleus-nucleus collisions from 4 to 160 A GeV within the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach that is extended to incorporate essentials aspects of chiral symmetry restoration (CSR) in the hadronic sector (via the Schwinger mechanism) on top of the deconfinement phase transition as implemented in PHSD. Especially the $K^+/π^+$ and the $(Λ+Σ^0)/π^-$ ratios in central Au+Au collisions are found to provide information on the relative importance of both transitions. The modelling of chiral symmetry restoration is driven by the pion-…
In this study we investigate the dynamics of strongly interacting parton-hadron matter by calculating the centrality dependence of direct photons produced in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV within the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach. As sources for 'direct' photons, we incorporate the interactions of quarks and gluons as well as hadronic interactions ($π+π\toρ+γ$, $ρ+π\toπ+γ$, meson-meson bremsstrahlung $m+m\to m+m+γ$, meson-baryon bremsstrahlung $m+B\to m+B+γ$), the decays of $ϕ$ and $a_1$ mesons and the photons produced in the initial hard collisions ('pQC…
In this review we address the dynamics of relativistic heavy-ion reactions and in particular the information obtained from electromagnetic probes that stem from the partonic and hadronic phases. The out-of-equilibrium description of strongly interacting relativistic fields is based on the theory of Kadanoff and Baym. For the modeling of the partonic phase we introduce a dynamical quasiparticle model (DQPM) for QCD in equilibrium. The widths and masses of the quasiparticles are controlled by transport coefficients in comparison to lattice QCD results. The resulting off-shell transport approach …
Two-neutron transfer reactions are studied within the interacting boson model based on the nuclear energy density functional theory. Constrained self-consistent mean-field calculations with the Skyrme energy density functional are performed to provide microscopic input to completely determine the Hamiltonian of the IBM. Spectroscopic properties are calculated only from the nucleonic degrees of freedom. This method is applied to study the $(t,p)$ and $(p,t)$ transfer reactions in the assorted set of rare-earth nuclei $^{146-158}$Sm, $^{148-160}$Gd, and $^{150-162}$Dy, where spherical-to-axially…
We present a new method by which wavefunctions with simple structure are renormalized so as to contain more complicated structure. This method, called $H^n$-cooling method, is applied to the study of the quadrupole collective motion of $^{56}$Fe, $^{54}$Cr, $^{58}$Fe and $^{56}$Cr. The shell-model wavefunctions of lowest-lying states of these nuclei are well treated by this method. By using the wavefunctions obtained via the $H^n$-cooling method, IBM-2 parameters are derived from a realistic shell-model hamiltonian and transition operators. The Majorana interaction becomes sizably repulsive, p…
Reflection asymmetric, octupole shapes in nuclei are a prominent aspect of nuclear structure, and have been recurrently studied over the decades. Recent experiments using radioactive-ion beams have provided evidence for stable octupole shapes. A variety of nuclear models have been employed for the related theoretical analyses. We review recent studies on the nuclear octupole shapes and collective excitations within the interacting boson model. A special focus is placed on the microscopic formulation of this model by using the mean-field method that is based on the framework of nuclear density …
We propose a novel formulation of the Interacting Boson Model (IBM) for rotational nuclei with axially-symmetric strong deformation. The intrinsic structure represented by the potential energy surface (PES) of a given multi-nucleon system has a certain similarity to that of the corresponding multi-boson system. Based on this feature, one can derive an appropriate boson Hamiltonian as already reported. This prescription, however, has a major difficulty in rotational spectra of strongly deformed nuclei: the bosonic moment of inertia is significantly smaller than the corresponding nucleonic one. …

The origin of weakly bound objects like clusters and hypernuclei, observed in heavy-ion collisions, is of theoretical and experimental interest. It is in the focus of the experiments at RHIC and LHC since it is not evident how such weakly bound objects can survive in an environment whose hadronic decay products point to a temperature of the order of 150 MeV. It is as well one of the key research topics in the future facilities of FAIR and NICA which are under construction in Darmstadt (Germany) and Dubna (Russia), respectively. We present here first results on the cluster dynamics within the m…
The mechanism of backbending is semi-phenomenologically investigated based on the hybridization of two rotational bands. These bands are defined by treating a model Hamiltonian describing two interacting subsystems: a set of particles moving in a deformed mean field and interacting among themselves through an effective pairing force and a phenomenological deformed core whose intrinsic ground state is an axially symmetric coherent boson state. The two components interact with each other by a quadrupole-quadrupole and a spin-spin interaction. The total Hamiltonian is considered in the space of s…
Microscopic energy density functionals (EDF) have become a standard tool for nuclear structure calculations, providing an accurate global description of nuclear ground states and collective excitations. For spectroscopic applications this framework has to be extended to account for collective correlations related to restoration of symmetries broken by the static mean field, and for fluctuations of collective variables. In this work we compare two approaches to five-dimensional quadrupole dynamics: the collective Hamiltonian for quadrupole vibrations and rotations, and the Interacting Boson Mod…
A shape phase transition between stable octupole deformation and octupole vibrations in Th nuclei is analyzed in a microscopic framework based on nuclear density functional theory. The relativistic functional DD-PC1 is used to calculate axially-symmetric quadrupole-octupole constrained energy surfaces. Observables related to order parameters are computed using an interacting-boson Hamiltonian, with parameters determined by mapping the microscopic energy surfaces to the expectation value of the Hamiltonian in the boson condensate. The systematics of constrained energy surfaces and low-energy ex…
Quark-Gluon plasmas produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions quickly expand and cool, entering a phase consisting of multiple interacting hadronic resonances just below the QCD deconfinement temperature, $T\sim 155$ MeV. Numerical microscopic simulations have emerged as the principal method for modeling the behavior of the hadronic stage of heavy-ion collisions, but the transport properties that characterize these simulations are not well understood. Methods are presented here for extracting the shear viscosity, and two transport parameters that emerge in Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics. The…
For a system of non-interacting electrons scattered by neutral impurities, we derive a modified Boltzmann equation that includes quasiparticle and virial corrections. We start from quasiclassical transport equation for non-equilibrium Green's functions and apply limit of small scattering rates. Resulting transport equation for quasiparticles has gradient corrections to scattering integrals. These gradient corrections are rearranged into a form characteristic for virial corrections.
The interacting boson model with configuration mixing, with parameters derived from the self-consistent mean-field calculation employing the microscopic Gogny energy density functional, is applied to the systematic analysis of the low-lying structure in Hg isotopes. Excitation energies, electromagnetic transition rates, deformation properties, and ground-state properties of the $^{172-204}$Hg nuclei are obtained by mapping the microscopic deformation energy surface onto the equivalent IBM Hamiltonian in the boson condensate. These results point to the overall systematic trend of the transition…
A coherent state technique is used to generate an Interacting Boson Model (IBM) Hamiltonian energy surface that simulates a mean field energy surface. The method presented here has some significant advantages over previous work. Specifically, that this can be a completely predictive requiring no a priori knowledge of the IBM parameters. The technique allows for the prediction of the low lying energy spectra and electromagnetic transition rates which are of astrophysical interest. Results and comparison with experiment are included for krypton, molybdenum, palladium, cadmium, gadolinium, dyspro…
The most complicated phenomena of equilibrium statistics, phase separations and transitions of various order and critical phenomena, can clearly and sharply be seen even for small systems in the topology of the curvature of the microcanonical entropy $S_{B}(E,N)=\ln[W(E,N)]$ as function of the conserved energy, particle number etc.. Also the equilibrium of the largest possible interacting many-body systems like self-gravitating systems is described by the topology of the entropy surface $S_{B}(E,N,L)$ where $L$ is the angular momentum. Conventional (canonical) statistical mechanics describes p…
