We study the principal configurations around an isolated $η$-umbilical point on a generic spacelike surface $S$ immersed in a null hypersurface $M$ of Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}_1^4$ relative to a well-defined null vector field $η$ orthogonal to the surface $S$. In the particular case of $M$ being a null rotation hypersurface of $\mathbb{R}_1^4$ we also recover the local Darbouxian principal configurations around that kind of $η$-umbilical points.
In the present note, first we derive an intrinsic inequality for Pseudo-umbilical spacelike submanifold in an indefinite space form. We use this inequality to show that such submanifold is totally geodesic. In the rest part of this paper, using a result of Aiyama [1], we prove that Pseudo-umbilical spacelike subamnifold is totally umbilical.
To study spacelike surfaces of codimension two in the Lorentz-Minkowski space $\Bbb R^{n+1}_1,$ we construct a pair of maps whose values are in $HS_r:=H_+^n(\textbf v,1)\cap \{x_{n+1}=r\},$ called $\textbf n_r^{\pm}$-Gauss maps. It is showed that they are well-defined and useful to study practically flat as well as umbilic spacelike surfaces of codimension two in $\Bbb R^{n+1}_1.$
In this article, we prove new stability results for almost-Einstein hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space, based on previous eigenvalue pinching results. Then, we deduce some comparable results for almost umbilical hypersurfaces.
For a compact spacelike constant mean curvature surface with nonempty boundary in the three-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space, we introduce a rotation index of the lines of curvature at the boundary umbilic point, which was developed by Choe \cite{Choe}. Using the concept of the rotation index at the interior and boundary umbilic points and applying the Poincaré-Hopf index formula, we prove that a compact immersed spacelike disk type capillary surface with less than $4$ vertices in a domain of $\Bbb L^3$ bounded by (spacelike or timelike) totally umbilic surfaces is part of a (spacelike) pla…
In this paper we have studied the properties of covariant almost analytic vector field on Q - quasi umbilical hypersurface $M$ of a Sasakian manifold $\tilde M$ with $(ϕ, g, u, v, λ)-$structure and obtained the scalars $α$ and $β$ using $1 - form u, v$ covariant almost analytic for the hypersurface $M$ to be totally umbilical and cylindrical.
We show that any compact quaternionic contact (qc) hypersurfaces in a hyper-Kähler manifold which is not totally umbilical has an induced qc structure, locally qc homothetic to the standard 3-Sasakian sphere. We also show that any nowhere umbilical qc hypersurface in a hyper-Kähler manifold is endowed with an involutive 7-dimensional distribution whose integral leafs are locally qc-conformal to the standard 3-Sasakian sphere.
We show that there is a correspondence between totally umbilic null hypersurfaces in generalized Robertson-Walker spaces and twisted decompositions of the fibre. This allows us to prove that nullcones are the unique totally umbilic null hypersurfaces in the closed Friedmann Cosmological model. We also apply this kind of ideas to static spaces, in particular to Reissner-Nordström and Schwarzschild exterior spacetimes.
In this paper we have studied the properties of Quasi umbilical hypersurface $M$ of a Sasakian manifold $\tilde M$ with $(ϕ, g, u, v, λ)-$structure and established the relation for $M$ to be cylindrical.
In [2] we have classified the Blaschke quasi-umbilical submanifolds in the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^n_s$. In this paper we shall classify the Blaschke para-umbilical hypersurfaces in the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^n_s$. That may be also considered as the extension of the classification of the conformal isotropic submanifolds in the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^n_s$.
We consider closed orientable hypersurfaces in a wide class of warped product manifolds, which include space forms, deSitter-Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström manifolds. By using a new integral formula or Brendle's Heintze-Karcher type inequality, we present some new characterizations of umbilic hypersurfaces. These results can be viewed as generalizations of the classical Jellet-Liebmann theorem and the Alexandrov theorem in Euclidean space.
We study immersed, connected, umbilic hypersurfaces in the Heisenberg group $H_{n}$ with $n$ $\geq $ $2.$ We show that such a hypersurface, if closed, must be rotationally invariant up to a Heisenberg translation. Moreover, we prove that, among others, Pansu spheres are the only such spheres with positive constant sigma-k curvature up to Heisenberg translations.
We prove that a Riemannian product of type M x R (where R denotes the Euclidean line) admits totally umbilical hypersurfaces if and only if M has locally the structure of a warped product and we give a complete description of the totally umbilical hypersurfaces in this case. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition under which a Riemannian three-manifold carrying a unit Killing field admits totally geodesic surfaces and we study local and global properties of three-manifolds satisfying this condition.
Let $Σ$ be a smooth closed hypersurface with non-negative Ricci curvature, isometrically immersed in a space form. It has been proved in \cite{P}, \cite{CZ}, and \cite{C2} that there are some $L^2$ inequalities on $Σ$ which measure the stability of closed umbilical hypersurfaces or more generally, closed hypersurfaces with traceless Newton transformation of the second fundamental form. In this paper, we prove that the constants in these inequalities are optimal.
Under some dimension restrictions, we prove that totally umbilical hypersurfaces of Spin$^c$ manifolds carrying a parallel, real or imaginary Killing spinor are of constant mean curvature. This extends to the Spin$^c$ case the result of O. Kowalski stating that, every totally umbilical hypersurface of an Einstein manifold of dimension greater or equal to $3$ is of constant mean curvature. As an application, we prove that there are no extrinsic hypersheres in complete Riemannian Spin manifolds of non-constant sectional curvature carrying a parallel, Killing or imaginary Killing spinor.
In this note, we give a geometric characterization of the compact and totally umbilical hypersurfaces that carry a non trivial locally static Killing Initial Data (KID). More precisely, such compact hypersurfaces have constant mean curvature and are isometric to one of the following manifolds: (i) Sn the standard sphere, (ii) a finite quotient of a warped product of a circle with a compact Einstein manifold of positive scalar curvature. In particular, these hypersurfaces have harmonic curvature and strictly positive constant scalar curvature.
Given a Riemannian manifold $M,$ and an open interval $I\subset\mathbb{R},$ we characterize nontrivial totally umbilical hypersurfaces of the product $M\times I$ -- as well as of warped products $I\times_ωM$ -- as those which are local graphs built on isoparametric families of totally umbilical hypersurfaces of $M.$ By means of this characterization, we fully extend to $\mathbb{S}^n\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^n\times\mathbb{R}$ the results by Souam and Toubiana on the classification of totally umbilical hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}.$ I…
In this paper, we study strictly convex affine hypersurfaces centroaffinely congruent to their centre map, in the case when the shape operator has two distinct eigenvalues: one of multiplicity 1, and one nonzero of multiplicity n-1. We show how to construct them from (n-1)-dimensional affine hyperspheres.
We prove $ε$-closeness of hypersurfaces to a sphere in Euclidean space under the assumption that the traceless second fundamental form is $δ$-small compared to the mean curvature. We give the explicit dependence of $δ$ on $ε$ within the class of uniformly convex hypersurfaces with bounded volume.
Given a semi-Riemannian manifold, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Riemannian submanifold of arbitrary co-dimension to be umbilical along normal directions. We do that by using the so-called \emph{total shear tensor}, i.e., the trace-free part of the second fundamental form. We define the \emph{shear space} and the \emph{umbilical space} as the spaces generated by the total shear tensor and by the umbilical vector fields, respectively. We show that the sum of their dimensions must equal the co-dimension.
We study the geometry of null hypersurfaces in indefinite complex contact manifolds. We prove several classification results for a variety of well-known null hypersurfaces, including the totally umbilic, totally screen umbilic, and the screen conformal ones. Furthermore, a characterization of the ambient space is given in case the underlying null hypersurface is totally contact umbilic, totally contact screen umbilic or contact screen conformal, i.e. we have proved that the ambient complex contact manifold must be a space of constant $GH$-sectional curvature of $-3$.
Perez proved some $L^2$ inequalities for closed convex hypersurfaces immersed in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, more generally, for closed hypersurfaces with non-negative Ricci curvature, immersed in an Einstein manifold. In this paper, we discuss the rigidity of these inequalities when the ambient manifold is $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$, or the closed hemisphere $\mathbb{S}_+^{n+1}$. We also obtain a generalization of the Perez's theorem to the hypersurfaces without the hypothesis of non-negative Ricci curvature.
A spacelike surface in four-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski spacetime through the lightcone has a meaningful lightlike normal vector field $η$. Several sufficient assumptions on such a surface with non-degenerate $η$-second fundamental form are established to prove that it must be a totally umbilical round sphere. With this aim, a new formula which relates the Gauss curvatures of the induced metric and of the $η$-second fundamental form is developed. Then, totally umbilical round spheres are characterized as the only compact spacelike surfaces through the lightcone such that its $η$-second funda…
In this paper we study curvature properties of semi-symmetric type of totally umbilical radical transversal lightlike hypersurfaces $(M,g)$ and $(M,\widetilde g)$ of a Kähler-Norden manifold $(\overline M,\overline J,\overline g,\overline {\widetilde g})$ of constant totally real sectional curvatures $\overline ν$ and $\overline {\widetilde ν}$ ($g$ and $\widetilde g$ are the induced metrics on $M$ by the Norden metrics $\overline g$ and $\overline {\widetilde g}$,respectively). We obtain a condition for $\overline {\widetilde ν}$ (resp. $\overline ν$) which is equivalent to each of the follow…
For Riemannian submanifolds of a semi-Riemannian manifold, we introduce the concepts of \emph{total shear tensor} and \emph{shear operators} as the trace-free part of the corresponding second fundamental form and shape operators. The relationship between these quantities and the umbilical properties of the submanifold is shown. Several novel notions of umbilical submanifolds are then considered along with the classical concepts of totally umbilical and pseudo-umbilical submanifolds. Then we focus on the case of co-dimension $2$, and we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the subman…
In this work, we study the geometric properties of spacelike foliations by hypersurfaces on a Lorentz manifold. We investigate conditions for the leaves being stable, totally geodesic or totally umbilical. We consider that $\overline{M}^{n+1}$ is equipped with a timelike closed conformal vector field $ξ$. If the foliation has constant mean curvature, we show that the leaves are stable. When the leaves are compact spacelike hypersurfaces we show that, under certain conditions, its are totally umbilic hypersurfaces. In the case of foliations by complete noncompact hypersurfaces, we using a Maxim…
For $n\geq 2$ we define a notion of umbilicity for hypersurfaces in the Heisenberg group $H_{n}$. We classify umbilic hypersurfaces in some cases, and prove that Pansu spheres are the only umbilic spheres with positive constant $p$(or horizontal)-mean curvature in $H_{n}$ up to Heisenberg translations.
We use the weighted Hsiung-Minkowski integral formulas and Brendle's inequality to show new rigidity results. First, we prove Alexandrov type results for closed embedded hypersurfaces with radially symmetric higher order mean curvature in a large class of Riemannian warped product manifolds, including the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström spaces, where the Alexandrov reflection principle is not available. Second, we prove that, in Euclidean space, the only closed immersed self-expanding solitons to the weighted generalized inverse curvature flow of codimension one are round hyperspheres.
We give an explicit estimate of the distance of a closed, connected, oriented and immersed hypersurface of a space form to a geodesic sphere and show that the spherical closeness can be controlled by a power of an integral norm of the traceless second fundamental form, whenever the latter is sufficiently small. Furthermore we use the inverse mean curvature flow in the hyperbolic space to deduce the best possible order of decay in the class of $C^{\infty}$-bounded hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space.
A normal field on a spacelike surface in $R^4_1$ is called bi-normal if $K^ν$, the determinant of Weingarten map associated with $ν$, is zero. In this paper we give a relationship between the spacelike pseudo-planar surfaces and spacelike pseudo-umbilical surfaces, then study the bi-normal fields on spacelike ruled surfaces and spacelike surfaces of revolution.
We introduce two classes of null hypersurfaces of an indefinite Sasakian manifold, $(\overline{M}, \overlineϕ,ζ, η)$, tangent to the characteristic vector field $ζ$, called; {\it contact screen conformal} and {\it contact screen umbilic} null hypersurfaces. These hypersurfaces come in to fill the existing gap in screen conformal and screen totally umbilic null hypersurfaces. We prove that such hypersurfaces are contained in indefinite Sasakian space forms of constant $\overlineϕ$-sectional curvature of $-3$.
To study spacelike surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski space $\Bbb R^{4}_1,$ we construct a pair of maps whose values are in the lightcone, called $\mathfrak l_r^{\pm} $-Gauss maps. We can use these maps to study umbilical spacelike surfaces and find parametrizations of spacelike surfaces of revolution of hyperbolic and eliptic types in some particular cases.
We prove a qualitative and a quantitative stability of the following rigidity theorem: an anisotropic totally umbilical closed hypersurface is the Wulff shape. Consider $n \geq 2$, $p\in (1, \, +\infty)$ and $Σ$ an $n$-dimensional, closed hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, boundary of a convex, open set. We show that if the $L^p$ norm of the trace-free part of the anisotropic second fundamental form is small, then $Σ$ must be $W^{2, \, p}$-close to the Wulff shape, with a quantitative estimate.
In the present paper, we show that the geometry of a screen integrable null hypersurface can be generated from an isometric immersion of a leaf of its screen distribution into the ambient space. We prove, under certain geometric conditions, that such immersions are contained in semi-Euclidean spheres or hyperbolic spaces, and the underlying null hypersurfaces are necessarily umbilic and screen totally umbilic. Where necessary, examples have been given to illustrate the main ideas.
In this work we study spacelike hypersurfaces immersed in spatially open standard static spacetimes with complete spacelike slices. Under appropriate lower bounds on the Ricci curvature of the spacetime in directions tangent to the slices, we prove that every complete CMC hypersurface having either bounded hyperbolic angle or bounded height is maximal. Our conclusions follow from general mean curvature estimates for spacelike hypersurfaces. In case where the spacetime is a Lorentzian product with spatial factor of nonnegative Ricci curvature and sectional curvatures bounded below, we also show…
Anti-de Sitter space is the Lorentzian space form with negative curvature. In this paper we consider lightlike hypersurfaces along spacelike submanifolds in anti-de Sitter space with general codimension. In particular, we investigate the singularities of lightlike hypersurfaces as an application of the theory of Legendrian singularities.
It is known that the totally umbilical hypersurfaces in the (n+1)-dimensional spheres are characterized as the only hypersurfaces with weak stability index 0. That is, a compact hypersurface with constant mean curvature, cmc, in S^{n+1}, different from an Euclidean sphere, must have stability index greater than or equal to 1. In this paper we prove that the weak stability index of any non-totally umbilical compact hypersurface M\subset S^{n+1} with cmc cannot take the values 1,2,3... n.
We show that a given $x:M^n\to \bar{M}^{n+1}=I\times_ϕF^{n}$ closed spacelike hypersurface with constant mean curvature $H$ and warping function $ϕ$ satisfying ϕ''\geq \ma\{Hϕ'',0\}$ is either minimal or a spacelike slice $\{t_{o}\}\times F$ for some $t_{o}\in I$.
In this paper we study the strong stability of spacelike hypersurfaces with constant $r$-th mean curvature in Generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes of constant sectional curvature. In particular, we treat the case in which the ambient spacetime is the de Sitter space.
We study the isometric spacelike embedding problem in scaled de Sitter space, and obtain Weyl-type estimates and the corresponding closedness in the space of embeddings.
In this paper we present a rigidity theorem for locally isometric hypersurfaces with a curvature restriction in de Sitter space. This is an analogue to the case for Riemannian space forms given by Guan and Shen in [5].
We prove that, in Minkowski space, if a spacelike, $(n-1)$-convex hypersurface $M$ with constant $σ_{n-1}$ curvature has bounded principal curvatures, then $M$ is convex. Moreover, if $M$ is not strictly convex, after an $\mathbb{R}^{n,1}$ rigid motion, $M$ splits as a product $M^{n-1}\times\mathbb{R}.$ We also construct nontrivial examples of strictly convex, spacelike hypersurface $M$ with constant $σ_{n-1}$ curvature and bounded principal curvatures.
Any compact spacelike hypersurface immersed in a doubly warped product spacetime $I{}_{h} \times_ρ \mathbb{P}$ with nondecreasing warping factor $ρ$ must be a spacelike slice, provided that the mean curvature satisfies $H\geqρ'/hρ$ everywhere on the hypersurface. The conclusion also holds, under suitable assumptions on the immersion, when the hypersurface is complete and noncompact. A similar rigidity property is shown for compact hypersurfaces in spacetimes carrying a conformal, strictly expanding, timelike vector field.
Similar to the definition of Dupin hypersurface in Riemannian space forms, we define the spacelike Dupin hypersurface in Lorentzian space forms. As conformal invariant objects, spacelike Dupin hypersurfaces are studied in this paper using the framework of conformal geometry. Further we classify the spacelike Dupin hypersurfaces with constant Möbius curvatures, which are the partition ratio of the principal curvatures of the spacelike Dupin hypersurface.
In this paper, we can obtain curvature estimates for spacelike admissible graphic hypersurfaces in the $(n+1)$-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_{1}$, and through which the existence of spacelike admissible graphic hypersurfaces, with prescribed $2$-th Weingarten curvature and Dirichlet boundary data, defined over a strictly convex domain in the hyperbolic plane $\mathscr{H}^{n}(1)\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_{1}$ of center at origin and radius $1$, can be proven.
This paper establishes the geometric structure of the lines of principal curvature of a hypersurface immersed in ${\mathbb R}^4$ in a neighborhood of the set $\mathcal{S}$ of its principal curvature singularities, consisting of the points at which atF least two principal curvatures are equal. Under generic conditions defined by appropriate transversality hypotheses it is proved that $\mathcal{S}$ is the union of regular smooth curves $\mathcal{S}_{12}$ and $\mathcal{S}_{23}$, consisting of partially umbilic points, where only two principal curvatures coincide. This curve is partitioned into re…
In this paper we analyze the problem of uniqueness for spacelike hypersurfaces with constant higher order mean curvature in generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes. We consider first the case of compact spacelike hypersurfaces, completing some previous results given in [2]. We next extend these results to the complete noncompact case. In that case, our approach is based on the use of a generalized version of the Omori-Yau maximum principle for trace type differential operators, recently given in [3].
