We consider closed orientable hypersurfaces in a wide class of warped product manifolds, which include space forms, deSitter-Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström manifolds. By using a new integral formula or Brendle's Heintze-Karcher type inequality, we present some new characterizations of umbilic hypersurfaces. These results can be viewed as generalizations of the classical Jellet-Liebmann theorem and the Alexandrov theorem in Euclidean space.
In this article we classify the totally umbilical surfaces which are immersed into a wide class of Riemannian manifolds having a structure of warped product, more precisely, we show that a totally umbilical surface immersed into the warped product $\mathbb{M}(κ)_f\times I$ (here, $\mathbb{M}(κ)$ denotes the 2-dimensional space form, having constant curvature $κ$, $I$ an interval and $f$ the warping function) is invariant by an one-parameter group of isometries of the ambient space. We also find the first integral of the ordinary differential equation that the profile curve satisfies (we mean, …
In this article, we prove new stability results for almost-Einstein hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space, based on previous eigenvalue pinching results. Then, we deduce some comparable results for almost umbilical hypersurfaces.
In this paper we have studied the properties of covariant almost analytic vector field on Q - quasi umbilical hypersurface $M$ of a Sasakian manifold $\tilde M$ with $(ϕ, g, u, v, λ)-$structure and obtained the scalars $α$ and $β$ using $1 - form u, v$ covariant almost analytic for the hypersurface $M$ to be totally umbilical and cylindrical.
We show that any compact quaternionic contact (qc) hypersurfaces in a hyper-Kähler manifold which is not totally umbilical has an induced qc structure, locally qc homothetic to the standard 3-Sasakian sphere. We also show that any nowhere umbilical qc hypersurface in a hyper-Kähler manifold is endowed with an involutive 7-dimensional distribution whose integral leafs are locally qc-conformal to the standard 3-Sasakian sphere.
We show that there is a correspondence between totally umbilic null hypersurfaces in generalized Robertson-Walker spaces and twisted decompositions of the fibre. This allows us to prove that nullcones are the unique totally umbilic null hypersurfaces in the closed Friedmann Cosmological model. We also apply this kind of ideas to static spaces, in particular to Reissner-Nordström and Schwarzschild exterior spacetimes.
In this paper we establish conditions on the length of the traceless part of the second fundamental form of a complete constant mean curvature hypersurface immersed in a space of constant sectional curvature in order to show that it is totally umbilical.
In this paper we have studied the properties of Quasi umbilical hypersurface $M$ of a Sasakian manifold $\tilde M$ with $(ϕ, g, u, v, λ)-$structure and established the relation for $M$ to be cylindrical.
In [2] we have classified the Blaschke quasi-umbilical submanifolds in the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^n_s$. In this paper we shall classify the Blaschke para-umbilical hypersurfaces in the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^n_s$. That may be also considered as the extension of the classification of the conformal isotropic submanifolds in the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^n_s$.
We study immersed, connected, umbilic hypersurfaces in the Heisenberg group $H_{n}$ with $n$ $\geq $ $2.$ We show that such a hypersurface, if closed, must be rotationally invariant up to a Heisenberg translation. Moreover, we prove that, among others, Pansu spheres are the only such spheres with positive constant sigma-k curvature up to Heisenberg translations.
We study the principal configurations around an isolated $η$-umbilical point on a generic spacelike surface $S$ immersed in a null hypersurface $M$ of Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}_1^4$ relative to a well-defined null vector field $η$ orthogonal to the surface $S$. In the particular case of $M$ being a null rotation hypersurface of $\mathbb{R}_1^4$ we also recover the local Darbouxian principal configurations around that kind of $η$-umbilical points.
We prove that a Riemannian product of type M x R (where R denotes the Euclidean line) admits totally umbilical hypersurfaces if and only if M has locally the structure of a warped product and we give a complete description of the totally umbilical hypersurfaces in this case. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition under which a Riemannian three-manifold carrying a unit Killing field admits totally geodesic surfaces and we study local and global properties of three-manifolds satisfying this condition.
Let $Σ$ be a smooth closed hypersurface with non-negative Ricci curvature, isometrically immersed in a space form. It has been proved in \cite{P}, \cite{CZ}, and \cite{C2} that there are some $L^2$ inequalities on $Σ$ which measure the stability of closed umbilical hypersurfaces or more generally, closed hypersurfaces with traceless Newton transformation of the second fundamental form. In this paper, we prove that the constants in these inequalities are optimal.
Under some dimension restrictions, we prove that totally umbilical hypersurfaces of Spin$^c$ manifolds carrying a parallel, real or imaginary Killing spinor are of constant mean curvature. This extends to the Spin$^c$ case the result of O. Kowalski stating that, every totally umbilical hypersurface of an Einstein manifold of dimension greater or equal to $3$ is of constant mean curvature. As an application, we prove that there are no extrinsic hypersheres in complete Riemannian Spin manifolds of non-constant sectional curvature carrying a parallel, Killing or imaginary Killing spinor.
In this note, we give a geometric characterization of the compact and totally umbilical hypersurfaces that carry a non trivial locally static Killing Initial Data (KID). More precisely, such compact hypersurfaces have constant mean curvature and are isometric to one of the following manifolds: (i) Sn the standard sphere, (ii) a finite quotient of a warped product of a circle with a compact Einstein manifold of positive scalar curvature. In particular, these hypersurfaces have harmonic curvature and strictly positive constant scalar curvature.
Given a Riemannian manifold $M,$ and an open interval $I\subset\mathbb{R},$ we characterize nontrivial totally umbilical hypersurfaces of the product $M\times I$ -- as well as of warped products $I\times_ωM$ -- as those which are local graphs built on isoparametric families of totally umbilical hypersurfaces of $M.$ By means of this characterization, we fully extend to $\mathbb{S}^n\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^n\times\mathbb{R}$ the results by Souam and Toubiana on the classification of totally umbilical hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}.$ I…
We prove $ε$-closeness of hypersurfaces to a sphere in Euclidean space under the assumption that the traceless second fundamental form is $δ$-small compared to the mean curvature. We give the explicit dependence of $δ$ on $ε$ within the class of uniformly convex hypersurfaces with bounded volume.
In this paper we give pinching theorems for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplacian on the compact hypersurfaces of ambient spaces with bounded sectional curvature. As application we deduce rigidity results for stable constant mean curvature hypersurfaces $M$ of these spaces $N$. Indeed, we prove that if $M$ is included in a ball of radius small enough then the Hausdorff-distance between $M$ and a geodesic sphere $S$ of $N$ is small. Moreover $M$ is diffeomorphic and quasi-isometric to $S$. As other application, we give rigidity results for almost umbilic hypersurfaces.
We study the geometry of null hypersurfaces in indefinite complex contact manifolds. We prove several classification results for a variety of well-known null hypersurfaces, including the totally umbilic, totally screen umbilic, and the screen conformal ones. Furthermore, a characterization of the ambient space is given in case the underlying null hypersurface is totally contact umbilic, totally contact screen umbilic or contact screen conformal, i.e. we have proved that the ambient complex contact manifold must be a space of constant $GH$-sectional curvature of $-3$.
Perez proved some $L^2$ inequalities for closed convex hypersurfaces immersed in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, more generally, for closed hypersurfaces with non-negative Ricci curvature, immersed in an Einstein manifold. In this paper, we discuss the rigidity of these inequalities when the ambient manifold is $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$, or the closed hemisphere $\mathbb{S}_+^{n+1}$. We also obtain a generalization of the Perez's theorem to the hypersurfaces without the hypothesis of non-negative Ricci curvature.
In this paper we study curvature properties of semi-symmetric type of totally umbilical radical transversal lightlike hypersurfaces $(M,g)$ and $(M,\widetilde g)$ of a Kähler-Norden manifold $(\overline M,\overline J,\overline g,\overline {\widetilde g})$ of constant totally real sectional curvatures $\overline ν$ and $\overline {\widetilde ν}$ ($g$ and $\widetilde g$ are the induced metrics on $M$ by the Norden metrics $\overline g$ and $\overline {\widetilde g}$,respectively). We obtain a condition for $\overline {\widetilde ν}$ (resp. $\overline ν$) which is equivalent to each of the follow…
For $n\geq 2$ we define a notion of umbilicity for hypersurfaces in the Heisenberg group $H_{n}$. We classify umbilic hypersurfaces in some cases, and prove that Pansu spheres are the only umbilic spheres with positive constant $p$(or horizontal)-mean curvature in $H_{n}$ up to Heisenberg translations.
We use the weighted Hsiung-Minkowski integral formulas and Brendle's inequality to show new rigidity results. First, we prove Alexandrov type results for closed embedded hypersurfaces with radially symmetric higher order mean curvature in a large class of Riemannian warped product manifolds, including the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström spaces, where the Alexandrov reflection principle is not available. Second, we prove that, in Euclidean space, the only closed immersed self-expanding solitons to the weighted generalized inverse curvature flow of codimension one are round hyperspheres.
We give an explicit estimate of the distance of a closed, connected, oriented and immersed hypersurface of a space form to a geodesic sphere and show that the spherical closeness can be controlled by a power of an integral norm of the traceless second fundamental form, whenever the latter is sufficiently small. Furthermore we use the inverse mean curvature flow in the hyperbolic space to deduce the best possible order of decay in the class of $C^{\infty}$-bounded hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space.
We introduce two classes of null hypersurfaces of an indefinite Sasakian manifold, $(\overline{M}, \overlineϕ,ζ, η)$, tangent to the characteristic vector field $ζ$, called; {\it contact screen conformal} and {\it contact screen umbilic} null hypersurfaces. These hypersurfaces come in to fill the existing gap in screen conformal and screen totally umbilic null hypersurfaces. We prove that such hypersurfaces are contained in indefinite Sasakian space forms of constant $\overlineϕ$-sectional curvature of $-3$.
We prove a qualitative and a quantitative stability of the following rigidity theorem: an anisotropic totally umbilical closed hypersurface is the Wulff shape. Consider $n \geq 2$, $p\in (1, \, +\infty)$ and $Σ$ an $n$-dimensional, closed hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, boundary of a convex, open set. We show that if the $L^p$ norm of the trace-free part of the anisotropic second fundamental form is small, then $Σ$ must be $W^{2, \, p}$-close to the Wulff shape, with a quantitative estimate.
In the present paper, we show that the geometry of a screen integrable null hypersurface can be generated from an isometric immersion of a leaf of its screen distribution into the ambient space. We prove, under certain geometric conditions, that such immersions are contained in semi-Euclidean spheres or hyperbolic spaces, and the underlying null hypersurfaces are necessarily umbilic and screen totally umbilic. Where necessary, examples have been given to illustrate the main ideas.
This paper establishes the geometric structure of the lines of principal curvature of a hypersurface immersed in ${\mathbb R}^4$ in a neighborhood of the set $\mathcal{S}$ of its principal curvature singularities, consisting of the points at which atF least two principal curvatures are equal. Under generic conditions defined by appropriate transversality hypotheses it is proved that $\mathcal{S}$ is the union of regular smooth curves $\mathcal{S}_{12}$ and $\mathcal{S}_{23}$, consisting of partially umbilic points, where only two principal curvatures coincide. This curve is partitioned into re…
Let $n \ge 2$, $p \in (1, \, +\infty)$ be given and let $Σ$ be a $n$-dimensional, closed hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. Denote by $A$ its second fundamental form, and by $\mathring{A}$ the tensor $A - \frac{1}{n} A^i_i g$ where $g = δ|_Σ$.Assuming that $Σ$ is the boundary of a convex, open set we prove that if the $L^p$-norm of $\mathring{A}$ is small, then $Σ$ must be $W^{2, \, p}$-close to a sphere, with a quantitative estimate.
We find the necessary and sufficient condition for the proper biharmonic CMC hypersurfaces in the special warped product space. Furthermore, we obtain that there exists no proper biharmonic CMC compact hypersurface there.
In the first part of this paper, we consider a partially overdetermined mixed boundary value problem in space forms and generalize the main result in \cite{GX} into the case of general domains with partial umbilical boundary in space forms. Precisely, we prove that a partially overdetermined problem in a domain with partial umbilical boundary admits a solution if and only if the rest part of the boundary is also part of an umbilical hypersurface. In the second part of this paper, we prove a Heintze-Karcher-Ros type inequality for embedded hypersurfaces with free boundary lying on a horosphere …
We prove that, for every closed (not necessarily convex) hypersurface $Σ$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ and every $p>n$, the $L^p$-norm of the trace-free part of the anisotropic second fundamental form controls from above the $W^{2,p}$-closeness of $Σ$ to the Wulff shape. In the isotropic setting, we provide a simpler proof. This result is sharp since in the subcritical regime $p\leq n$, the lack of convexity assumptions may lead in general to bubbling phenomena. Moreover, we obtain a stability theorem for quasi Einstein (not necessarily convex) hypersurfaces and we improve the quantitative estimates …
We study hypersurfaces in the pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^{n+1}_s$, which write as a warped product of a $1$-dimensional base with an $(n-1)$-manifold of constant sectional curvature. We show that either they have constant sectional curvature or they are contained in a rotational hypersurface. Therefore, we first define rotational hypersurfaces in the pseudo-Euclidean space.
We use the method of equivariant moving frames to revisit the problem of normal forms and equivalence of nondegenerate real hypersurfaces M \subset C^2 under the pseudo-group action of holomorphic transformations. The moving frame recurrence formulae allow us to systematically and algorithmically recover the results of Chern and Moser for hypersurfaces that are either non-umbilic at a point p \in M or umbilic in an open neighborhood of it. In the former case, the coefficients of the normal form expansion, when expressed as functions of the jet of the hypersurface at the point, provide a comple…
In this paper, we deduce some rigidity results in warped product spaces under normal variations of CMC hypersurfaces. In particular, we prove the existence of one-parameter families locally rigid on the spatial fiber of Anti-de Sitter Schwarzschild spacetime and one-parameter families with bifurcation points on the spatial fiber of de Sitter Schwarzschild spacetime.
In this paper we obtain a sharp height estimate concerning compact hypersurfaces immersed into warped product spaces with some constant higher order mean curvature, and whose boundary is contained into a slice. We apply these results to draw topological conclusions at the end of the paper.
In this work, we study the geometric properties of spacelike foliations by hypersurfaces on a Lorentz manifold. We investigate conditions for the leaves being stable, totally geodesic or totally umbilical. We consider that $\overline{M}^{n+1}$ is equipped with a timelike closed conformal vector field $ξ$. If the foliation has constant mean curvature, we show that the leaves are stable. When the leaves are compact spacelike hypersurfaces we show that, under certain conditions, its are totally umbilic hypersurfaces. In the case of foliations by complete noncompact hypersurfaces, we using a Maxim…
In this paper we characterize compact and complete hypersurfaces with some constant higher order mean curvature into warped product spaces. Our approach is based on the use of a new trace operator version of the Omori-Yau maximum principle which seems to be interesting in its own.
In this paper, we study gradient Einstein-type structure immersed into a Riemannian warped product manifold. We obtain some triviality results for the potential function and smooth map $u$. We investigate conditions for a gradient Einstein-type structure to be minimal, totally umbilical, or totally geodesic immersed into a warped product $I\times_f M^n$. Furthermore, we characterize rotational hypersurface into $\mathbb{R}\times_f\mathbb{R}^n$ has a gradient Einstein-type structure.
We define a complex connection on a real hypersurface of $\C^{n+1}$ which is naturally inherited from the ambient space. Using a system of Codazzi-type equations, we classify connected real hypersurfaces in $\C^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, which are Levi umbilical and have non zero constant Levi curvature. It turns out that such surfaces are contained either in a sphere or in the boundary of a complex tube domain with spherical section.
We show that compact embedded starshaped $r$-convex hypersurfaces of certain warped products satisfying $H_r=aH+b$ with $a\geqslant 0$, $b>0$, where $H$ and $H_r$ are respectively the mean curvature and $r$-th mean curvature is a slice. In the case of space forms, we show that without the assumption of starshapedness, such Weingarten hypersurfaces are geodesic spheres. Finally, we prove that, in the case of space forms, if $Hr-aH-b$ is close to $0$ then the hypersurface is close to geodesic sphere for the Hausdorff distance. We also prove an anisotropic version of this stability result in the …
The Riemannian product $\mathbb M_1(c_1) \times \mathbb M_2(c_2)$, where $\mathbb M_i(c_i)$ denotes the $2$-dimensional space form of constant sectional curvature $c_i \in \mathbb R$, has two different Spin$^c$ structures carrying each a parallel spinor. The restriction of these two parallel spinor fields to a $3$-dimensional hypersurface $M$ characterizes the isometric immersion of $M$ into $\mathbb M_1(c_1) \times \mathbb M_2(c_2)$. As an application, we prove that totally umbilical hypersurfaces of $\mathbb M_1(c_1) \times \mathbb M_1(c_1)$ and totally umbilical hypersurfaces of $\mathbb M_…
In this paper, we first investigate several rigidity problems for hypersurfaces in the warped product manifolds with constant linear combinations of higher order mean curvatures as well as "weighted'' mean curvatures, which extend the work \cite{Mon, Brendle,BE} considering constant mean curvature functions. Secondly, we obtain the rigidity results for hypersurfaces in the space forms with constant linear combinations of intrinsic Gauss-Bonnet curvatures $L_k$. To achieve this, we develop some new kind of Newton-Maclaurin type inequalities on $L_k$ which may have independent interest.
Given a warped product of the real line with a Riemannian manifold of arbitrary dimension, we classify the hypersurfaces whose tangent spaces make a constant angle with the vector field tangent to the real direction. We show that this is a natural setting in which to extend previous results in this direction made by several authors. Moreover, when the constant angle hypersurface is a graph over the Riemannian manifold, we show that the function involved satisfies a generalized eikonal equation, which we solve via a geometric method. In the final part of this paper we prove that minimal constan…
In this paper we study the affine focal set, which is the bifurcation set of the affine distance to submanifolds $N^n$ contained in hypersurfaces $M^{n+1}$ of the $(n+2)$-space. We give condition under which this affine focal set is a regular hypersurface and, for curves in $3$-space, we describe its stable singularities. For a given Darboux vector field $ξ$ of the immersion $N\subset M$, one can define the affine metric $g$ and the affine normal plane bundle $\mathcal{A}$. We prove that the $g$-Laplacian of the position vector belongs to $\mathcal{A}$ if and only if $ξ$ is parallel. For umbil…
In this paper, we study rigidity problems for hypersurfaces with constant curvature quotients $\frac{\mathcal{H}_{2k+1}}{\mathcal{H}_{2k}}$ in the warped product manifolds. Here $\mathcal{H}_{2k}$ is the $k$-th Gauss-Bonnet curvature and $\mathcal{H}_{2k+1}$ arises from the first variation of the total integration of $\mathcal{H}_{2k}$. Hence the quotients considered here are in general different from $\frac{σ_{2k+1}}{σ_{2k}}$, where $σ_k$ are the usual mean curvatures. We prove several rigidity and Bernstein type results for compact or non-compact hypersurfaces corresponding to such quotients…
We classify Riemannian surfaces admitting associated families in three dimensional homogeneous spaces with four-dimensional isometry groups and in a wide family of (semi-Riemannian) warped products, with an extra natural condition (namely, rotating structure vector field). We prove that, provided the surface is not totally umbilical, such families exist in both cases if, and only if, the ambient manifold is a product and the surface is minimal. In particular, there exists no associated families of surfaces with rotating structure vector field in the Heisenberg group.
The purpose of this article is to study the geometry of gradient almost Yamabe solitons immersed into warped product manifolds $I\times_{f}M^{n}$ whose potential is given by the height function from the immersion. First, we present some geometric rigidity on compact solitons due to a curvature condition on the warped product manifold. In the sequel, we investigate conditions for the existence of totally geodesic, totally umbilical and minimal solitons. Furthermore, in the scope of constant angle immersions, a classification of rotational gradient almost Yamabe soliton immersed into $\mathbb{R}…
In this paper, we study a stability problem of free boundary hypersurfaces, and also capillary ones whose boundary supported on a horosphere in hyperbolic space. We prove that umbilical hypersurfaces are only stable immersed capillary hypersurfaces whose boundary supported on a horosphere. Using the same method, we show that a totally geodesic hyperplane is only stable immersed type-II hypersurface whose boundary supported on a horosphere.
