We consider a range of geometric stability problems for hypersurfaces of spaceforms. One of the key results is an estimate relating the distance to a geodesic sphere of an embedded hypersurface with integral norms of the traceless Hessian operator of a level set function for the open set bounded by the hypersurface. As application, we give a unified treatment of many old and new stability problems arising in geometry and analysis. Those problems ask for spherical closeness of a hypersurface, given a geometric constraint. Examples include stability in Alexandroff's soap bubble theorem in space forms, Serrin's overdetermined problem, a Steklov problem involving the bi-Laplace operator and non-convex Alexandroff-Fenchel inequalities.
We study the boundary rigidity problem for compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary $(M,g)$: is the Riemannian metric $g$ uniquely determined, up to an action of diffeomorphism fixing the boundary, by the distance function $ρ_g(x,y)$ known for all boundary points $x$ and $y$? We prove in this paper global uniqueness and stability for the boundary rigidity problem for generic simple metrics. More specifically, we show that there exists a generic set $\mathcal{G}$ of simple Riemannian metrics and an open dense set $\mathcal{U}\subset \mathcal{G}\times\mathcal{G}$, such that any two Riemannian …
We prove that the boundary of a (not necessarily connected) bounded smooth set with constant nonlocal mean curvature is a sphere. More generally, and in contrast with what happens in the classical case, we show that the Lipschitz constant of the nonlocal mean curvature of such a boundary controls its $C^2$-distance from a single sphere. The corresponding stability inequality is obtained with a sharp decay rate.
In this note we establish some rigidity and stability results for Caffarelli's log-concave perturbation theorem. As an application we show that if a 1-log-concave measure has almost the same Poincaré constant as the Gaussian measure, then it almost splits off a Gaussian factor.
We prove that the peakons are asymptotically H 1-stable, under the flow of the Degasperis-Procesi equation, in the class of functions with a momentum density that belongs to M + (R). The key argument is a rigidity result for uniformly in time exponentially decaying global solutions that is shared by the Holm-Staley b-family of equations for b $\ge$ 1. This extends previous results obtained for the Camassa-Holm equation (b = 2).
In this paper, we study geometric rigidity of Riemannian manifolds admitting stable solutions of certain elliptic problems (stability in a variational sense), that is, under suitable hypotheses, we are able to characterize the Riemannian manifold which admits a stable solution. Furthermore, under the non-negativity of the weighted Ricci curvature, we deduce several data about the stable solution and a splitting result for the manifold.

We investigate a particle system which is a discrete and deterministic approximation of the one-dimensional Keller-Segel equation with a logarithmic potential. The particle system is derived from the gradient flow of the homogeneous free energy written in Lagrangian coordinates. We focus on the description of the blow-up of the particle system, namely: the number of particles involved in the first aggregate, and the limiting profile of the rescaled system. We exhibit basins of stability for which the number of particles is critical, and we prove a weak rigidity result concerning the rescaled d…
Let $Ω_0$ denote the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^N$ ($N\ge 2$) centered at the origin. We suppose that $Ω_0$ contains a core, given by a smaller concentric ball $D_0$, made of a (possibly) different material. We discover that, depending on the relative hardness of the two materials, this radial configuration can either be a local maximizer for the torsional rigidity functional $E$ or a saddle shape. In this paper we consider perturbations that simultaneously act on the boundaries $\partial D_0$ and $\partialΩ_0$. This gives rise to resonance effects that are not present when $\partial D_0$ or $\p…
The Helfrich functional, denoted by H^{c_0}, is a mathematical expression proposed by Helfrich (1973) for the natural free energy carried by an elastic phospholipid bilayer. Helfrich theorises that idealised elastic phospholipid bilayers minimise H^{c_0} among all possible configurations. The functional integrates a spontaneous curvature parameter c_0 together with the mean curvature of the bilayer and constraints on area and volume, either through an inclusion of osmotic pressure difference and tensile stress or otherwise. Using the mathematical concept of embedded orientable surface to repre…
We prove a sharp upper bound for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a class of nonlinear elliptic operators which includes the p-Laplace and the pseudo-p-Laplace operators. Moreover, we prove a stability result by means of a suitable isoperimetric deficity. Finally, we give a sharp lower bound for the anisotropic p-torsional rigidity.
Given a compact manifold with boundary with unknown Riemannian metric. The problem is to reconstruct the metric in a class of conformal metrics from knowledge of lengths of all closed geodesics (kinematic data). An integral inequality is stated which implies uniqueness and stability for this problem. If the conformal class is not known a unique reconstruction is not possible since of shortage of information. It is proved that the list of all geodesic lengths is sufficient for unique determination of a Riemannian metric in a compact surface with boundary up to an automorphism which fix the boun…
We consider a class of rigidity results in a convex cone $Σ\subseteq \mathbb{R}^N$. These include overdetermined Serrin-type problems for a mixed boundary value problem relative to $Σ$, Alexandrov's soap bubble-type results relative to $Σ$, and a Heintze-Karcher's inequality relative to $Σ$. Each rigidity result is obtained by means of a single integral identity and holds true under weak integral conditions. Optimal quantitative stability estimates are obtained in terms of an $L^2$-pseudodistance. In particular, the optimal stability estimate for Heintze-Karcher's inequality is new even in the…
For a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary, endowed with a magnetic potential $α$, we consider the problem of restoring the metric $g$ and the magnetic potential $α$ from the values of the Mañé action potential between boundary points and the associated linearized problem. We study simple magnetic systems. In this case, knowledge of the Mañé action potential is equivalent to knowledge of the scattering relation on the boundary which maps a starting point and a direction of a magnetic geodesic into its end point and direction. This problem can only be solved up to an isometry and a gauge t…
We prove a qualitative and a quantitative stability of the following rigidity theorem: an anisotropic totally umbilical closed hypersurface is the Wulff shape. Consider $n \geq 2$, $p\in (1, \, +\infty)$ and $Σ$ an $n$-dimensional, closed hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, boundary of a convex, open set. We show that if the $L^p$ norm of the trace-free part of the anisotropic second fundamental form is small, then $Σ$ must be $W^{2, \, p}$-close to the Wulff shape, with a quantitative estimate.

In this paper we prove sharp regularity for a differential inclusion into a set $K\subset\mathbb{R}^{2\times 2}$ that arises in connection with the Aviles-Giga functional. The set $K$ is not elliptic, and in that sense our main result goes beyond Šverák's regularity theorem on elliptic differential inclusions. It can also be reformulated as a sharp regularity result for a critical nonlinear Beltrami equation. In terms of the Aviles-Giga energy, our main result implies that zero energy states coincide (modulo a canonical transformation) with solutions of the differential inclusion into $K$. Thi…
We consider Serrin's overdetermined problem for the torsional rigidity and Alexandrov's Soap Bubble Theorem. We present new integral identities, that show a strong analogy between the two problems and help to obtain better (in some cases optimal) quantitative estimates for the radially symmetric configuration. The estimates for the Soap Bubble Theorem benefit from those of Serrin's problem.
This paper studies rigidity for immersed self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow of surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3.$ We prove that an immersed self-shrinker with finite $L$-index must be proper and of finite topology. As one of consequences, there is no stable two-dimensional self-shrinker in $\mathbb{R}^3$ without assuming properness. We conclude the paper by giving an affirmative answer to a question of Mantegazza.
We consider a variational problem involving competition between surface tension and charge repulsion. We show that, as opposed to the case of weak (short-range) interactions where we proved ill-posedness of the problem in a previous paper, when the repulsion is stronger the perimeter dominates the capacitary term at small scales. In particular we prove existence of minimizers for small charges as well as their regularity. Combining this with the stability of the ball under small $C^{1,γ}$ perturbations, this ultimately leads to the minimality of the ball for small charges. We cover in particul…
We present new quantitative estimates for the radially symmetric configuration concerning Serrin's overdetermined problem for the torsional rigidity, Alexandrov's Soap Bubble Theorem, and other related problems. The new estimates improve on those obtained in two our previous articles, and are in some cases optimal.
