We prove the existence of weak solutions to a viscoelastic phase separation problem in two space dimensions. The mathematical model consists of a Cahn-Hilliard-type equation for two-phase flows and the Peterlin-Navier-Stokes equations for viscoelastic fluids. We focus on the case of a polynomial-like potential and suitably bounded coefficient functions. Using the Lagrange-Galerkin finite element method complex behavior of solution for spinodal decomposition including transient polymeric network structures is demonstrated.
The aim of this paper is to prove global in time existence of weak solutions for a viscoelastic phase separation. We consider the case with singular potentials and degenerate mobilities. Our model couples the diffusive interface model with the Peterlin-Navier-Stokes equations for viscoelastic fluids. To obtain the global in time existence of weak solutions we consider appropriate approximations by solutions of the viscoelastic phase separation with a regular potential and build on the corresponding energy and entropy estimates.
A new model for viscoelastic phase separation is proposed, based on a systematically derived conservative two-fluid model. Dissipative effects are included by phenomenological viscoelastic terms. By construction, the model is consistent with the second law of thermodynamics, and we study well-posedness of the model, i.e., existence of weak solutions, a weak-strong uniqueness principle, and stability with respect to perturbations, which are proven by means of relative energy estimates. A good qualitative agreement with mesoscopic simulations is observed in numerical tests.
In this paper we analyze the three-dimensional Peterlin viscoelastic model. By means of a mixed Galerkin and semigroup approach we prove the existence of a weak solutions. Further combining parabolic regularity with the relative energy method we derive a conditional weak-strong uniqueness result.
The aim of this paper is to analyze a viscoelastic phase separation model. We derive a suitable notion of the relative energy taking into account the non-convex nature of the energy law for the viscoelastic phase separation. This allows us to prove the weak-strong uniqueness principle. We will provide the estimates for the full model in two space dimensions. For a reduced model we present the estimates in three space dimensions and derive conditional relative energy estimates.
The existence and uniqueness of solution to a one-dimensional hyperbolic integro-differential problem arising in viscoelasticity is here considered. The kernel, in the linear viscoelasticity equation, represents the relaxation function which is characteristic of the considered material. Specifically, the case of a kernel, which does not satisfy the classical regularity requirements is analysed. This choice is suggested by applications according to the literature to model a wider variety of materials. A notable example of kernel, not satisfying the classical regularity requirements, is represen…
The aim of this work is to prove the global-in-time existence of weak solutions for a viscoelastic phase separation model in three space dimensions. To this end we apply the relative energy concept provided by [3]. We consider the case of regular polynomial-type potentials and positive mobilities, as well as the degenerate case with logarithmic potential and vanishing mobility.
We prove an analog of the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg theorem for weak solutions of a system of PDE that model a viscoelastic fluid in the presence of an energy damping mechanism. The system was recently introduced as a possible method of establishing the global in time existence of weak solutions of the well known Oldroyd system.
We study the generalized Oldroyd model with viscosity depending on the shear stress behaving like $μ(\mathbf{D}) \sim |\mathbf{D}|^{p-2}$ ($p>\frac 65$) regularized by a nonlinear stress diffusion. Using the Lipschitz truncation method we are able to prove global existence of weak solution to the corresponding system of partial differential equations.
The paper is devoted to homogenization of two-phase incompressible viscoelastic flows with disordered microstructure. We study two cases. In the first case, both phases are modeled as Kelvin-Voight viscoelastic materials. In the second case, one phase is a Kelvin-Voight material, and the other is a viscous Newtonian fluid. The microscale system contains the conservation of mass and balance of momentum equations. The inertial terms in the momentum equation incorporate the actual interface advected by the flow. In the constitutive equations, a frozen interface is employed. The interface geometry…
A Stokes-type problem for a viscoelastic model of salt rocks is considered, and existence, uniqueness and regularity are investigated in the scale of $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces. The system is transformed into a generalized Stokes problem, and the proper conditions on the parameters of the model that guarantee that the system is uniformly elliptic are given. Under those conditions, existence, uniqueness and low-order regularity are obtained under classical regularity conditions on the data, while higher-order regularity is proved under less stringent conditions than classical ones. Explicit est…
The global existence of solutions to incompressible viscoelastic flows has been a longstanding open problem, even for the global weak solution. Under some special structure ("div-curl" condition) the global small smooth solution was obtained in \cite{llzhou, cz}. However, the result with large initial data remains unknown up to now, and it is studied in this paper. We shall put forward a new structure: the cone-condition and then derive the global smooth solution to 3D incompressible viscoelastic system with a class of large initial data. The key is to gain an angle quantity in the estimate of…
We study the uniqueness and regularity of the steady states of the diffusively driven Boltzmann equation in the physically relevant case where the restitution coefficient depends on the impact velocity including, in particular, the case of viscoelastic hard-spheres. We adopt a strategy which is novel in several aspects, in particular, the study of regularity does not requires a priori knowledge of the time-dependent problem. Furthermore, the uniqueness result is obtained in the small thermalization regime by studying the so-called quasi-elastic limit for the problem. An important new aspect li…
This work is devoted to the study of a compressible viscoelastic fluids satisfying the Oldroyd-B model in a regular bounded domain. We prove the local existence of solutions and uniqueness of flows by a classical fixed point argument.
The existence and uniqueness of local in time strong solution with large initial data for the three-dimensional compressible viscoelastic fluid is established. The strong solution has weaker regularity than the classical solution. The Lax-Milgram theorem and the Schauder-Tychonoff fixed-point argument are applied.
We consider the free boundary problem of compressible isentropic neo-Hookean viscoelastic fluid equations with surface tension. Under the physical kinetic and dynamic conditions proposed on the free boundary, we investigate regularities of classical solutions to viscoelastic fluid equations in Sobolev spaces which are uniform in viscosity and justify the corresponding vanishing viscosity limits. The key ingredient of our proof is that the deformation gradient tensor in Lagrangian coordinates can be represented as a parameter in terms of flow map so that the inherent structure of the elastic te…
We investigate local and global strong solutions for the incompressible viscoelastic system of Oldroyd--B type. We obtain the existence and uniqueness of a solution in a functional setting invariant by the scaling of the associated equations. More precisely, the initial velocity has the same critical regularity index as for the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations, and one more derivative is needed for the deformation tensor. We point out a smoothing effect on the velocity and a $L^1-$decay on the difference between the deformation tensor and the identity matrix. Our result implies that the…
We investigate global strong solutions for the incompressible viscoelastic system of Oldroyd--B type with the initial data close to a stable equilibrium. We obtain the existence and uniqueness of the global solution in a functional setting invariant by the scaling of the associated equations, where the initial velocity has the same critical regularity index as for the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations, and one more derivative is needed for the deformation tensor. Like the classical incompressible Navier-Stokes, one may construct the unique global solution for a class of large highly osci…
We study the asymptotic properties of the semigroup S(t) arising from a nonlinear viscoelastic equation with hereditary memory on a bounded three-dimensional domain written in the past history framework of Dafermos. We establish the existence of the global attractor of optimal regularity for S(t) for a wide class of nonlinearities as well as within the most general condition on the memory kernel.
The Cauchy problem for nonlinear elastic wave equations with viscoelastic damping terms is investigated in $L^{p}$ framework. It is proved that the small global solutions constructed in $L^{2}$-Sobolev spaces in our preceding paper [12] satisfies consistency property corresponding to the additional regularity of the initial data. As a result, sharp estimates in $t$ and approximation formulas by the diffusion waves are established.
We investigate a viscoelastic flow model with a generalized memory, in which a weak-singular component is introduced in the exponential convolution kernel of classical viscoelastic flow equations that remains untreated in the literature. We prove the well-posedness and regularity of the solutions, based on which we prove the exponential convergence of the solutions to the steady state. The proposed model serves as an extension of classical viscoelastic flow equations by adding a dimension characterized by the power of the weak-singular kernel, and the derived results provide theoretical suppor…
We consider the system of partial differential equations governing two-dimensional flows of a robust class of viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion, involving a general objective derivative. The studied system generalizes the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations for the fluid velocity $v$ and pressure $p$ by the presence of an additional term in the constitutive equation for the Cauchy stress expressed in terms of a positive definite tensor $B$. The tensor $B$ evolves according to a diffusive variant of an equation that can be viewed as a combination of corresponding counterpa…
In this paper, we are concerned with the convergence rates of the global strong solution to constant equilibrium state for the compressible viscoelastic fluids in the whole space. We combine both analysis about Green's matrix method and energy estimate method to get optimal time decay rate in critical Besov space framework. Our result imply the optimal $L^{2}$-time decay rate and only need the initial data to be small in critical Besov space which have very low regularity compared with traditional Sobolev space.
The purpose of this article is to show that there are many differential viscoelastic models for which the global existence of a regular solution is possible. Although the problem of global existence in the classic Oldroyd model is still open, we show that by adding a non-linear contribution (proposed by R.G. Larson in 1984), it is possible to obtain more regular and global solutions, regardless of the size of the data (in the two-dimensional and periodic case). Similarly, more complex appearance models such as those related to "pom-pom" polymers are interesting and mathematically richer: some …
The thermodynamic model of visco-elastic deformable magnetic materials at finite strains is formulated in a fully Eulerian way in rates. The Landau theory applies for ferro-to-para-magnetic phase transition, the gradient theory (leading exchange energy) for magnetization with general mechanically dependent coefficient, hysteresis in magnetization evolution by Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation involving objective corotational time derivative of magnetization, and demagnetizing field are considered in the model. The Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic rheology with a higher-order viscosity (exploiting the …
We study the initial-boundary value problem for an Euler-Bernoulli beam model with discontinuous bending stiffness laying on a viscoelastic foundation and subjected to an axial force and an external load both of Dirac-type. The corresponding model equation is fourth order partial differential equation and involves discontinuous and distributional coefficients as well as a distributional right-hand side. Moreover the viscoelastic foundation is of Zener type and described by a fractional differential equation with respect to time. We show how functional analytic methods for abstract variational …
The paper is concerned with the exponential attractors for the viscoelastic wave model in $Ω\subset \mathbb R^3$: $$u_{tt}-h_t(0)Δu-\int_0^\infty\partial_sh_t(s)Δu(t-s)\mathrm ds+f(u)=h,$$ with time-dependent memory kernel $h_t(\cdot)$ which is used to model aging phenomena of the material. Conti et al [Amer. J. Math., 2018] recently provided the correct mathematical setting for the model and a well-posedness result within the novel theory of dynamical systems acting on. time-dependent spaces, recently established by Conti, Pata and Temam [J. Differential Equations, 2013], and proved the exist…
We provide a proof of global regularity of solutions of some models of viscoelastic flow with an integral constitutive law, in the two spatial dimensions and in a periodic domain. Models that are included in these results are classical models for flow memory: for instance some K-BKZ models, the PSM model or the Wagner model. The proof is based on the fact that these models naturally give a $L^\infty$-bound on the stress and that they allow to control the spatial gradient of the stress. The main result does not cover the case of the Oldroyd-B model.
We consider nonlinear viscoelastic materials of Kelvin-Voigt type with stored energies satisfying an Andrews-Ball condition, allowing for non convexity in a compact set. Existence of weak solutions with deformation gradients in $H^1$ is established for energies of any superquadratic growth. In two space dimensions, weak solutions notably turn out to be unique in this class. Conservation of energy for weak solutions in two and three dimensions, as well as global regularity for smooth initial data in two dimensions are established under additional mild restrictions on the growth of the stored en…
The global existence of weak solutions of the incompressible viscoelastic flows in two spatial dimensions has been a long standing open problem, and it is studied in this paper. We show the global existence if the initial deformation gradient is close to the identity matrix in $L^2\cap L^\infty$, and the initial velocity is small in $L^2$ and bounded in $L^p$, for some $p>2$. While the assumption on the initial deformation gradient is automatically satisfied for the classical Oldroyd-B model, the additional assumption on the initial velocity being bounded in $L^p$ for some $p>2$ may due to tec…
We consider the large time behavior of global strong solutions to the compressible viscoelastic flows on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N\,(N\geq 2)$, where the system describes the elastic properties of the compressible fluid. Adding a suitable initial condition involving only the low-frequency, we prove optimal time decay estimates for the global solutions in the $L^p$ critical regularity framework, which are similar to those of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Our results rely on the pure energy argument, which allows us to remove the usual smallness assumption of the data in the low-…
This paper is concerned with regular flows of incompressible weakly viscoelastic fluids which obey a differential constitutive law of Oldroyd type. We study the newtonian limit for weakly viscoelastic fluid flows in $\R^N$ or $\T^N$ for $N=2, 3$, when the Weissenberg number (relaxation time measuring the elasticity effect in the fluid) tends to zero. More precisely, we prove that the velocity field and the extra-stress tensor converge in their existence spaces (we examine the Sobolev-$H^s$ theory and the Besov-$B^{s,1}_2$ theory to reach the critical case $s= N/2$) to the corresponding newtoni…
In this article, we prove the local well-posedness, for arbitrary initial data with certain regularity assumptions, of the equations of a Viscoelastic Fluid of Johnson-Segalman type with a free surface. More general constitutive laws can be easily managed in the same way. The geometry is defined by a solid fixed bottom and an upper free boundary submitted to surface tension. The proof relies on a Lagrangian formulation. First we solve two intermediate problems through a fixed point using mainly G. Allain Appl. Math. Optim. 16 (1987) 37-50 for the Navier-Stokes part. Then we solve the whole Lag…
The inviscid limit for the two-dimensional compressible viscoelastic equations on the half plane is considered under the no-slip boundary condition. When the initial deformation tensor is a perturbation of the identity matrix and the initial density is near a positive constant, we establish the uniform estimates of solutions to the compressible viscoelastic flows in the conormal Sobolev spaces. It is well-known that for the corresponding inviscid limit of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with the no-slip boundary condition, one does not expect the uniform energy estimates of solutions …
We propose a new Cahn-Hilliard phase field model coupled to incompressible viscoelasticity at large strains, obtained from a diffuse interface mixture model and formulated in the Eulerian configuration. A new kind of diffusive regularization, of Allen-Cahn type, is introduced in the transport equation for the deformation gradient, together with a regularizing interface term depending on the gradient of the deformation gradient in the free energy of the system. We study the global existence of a weak solution for the model. While standard diffusive regularizations of the transport equation for …
We consider the wave equation with degenerate viscoelastic dissipation recently examined in Cavalcanti, Fatori, and Ma, Attractors for wave equations with degenerate memory, J. Differential Equations (2016). Under some additional assumptions, we show the existence of a compact absorbing set. This result provides further regularity for the global attractor and shows that it consists of regular solutions.
In this paper, we study, from both variational and numerical points of view, a dynamic contact problem between a viscoelastic-viscoplastic piezoelectric body and a deformable obstacle. The contact is modelled using the classical normal compliance contact condition. The variational formulation is written as a nonlinear ordinary differential equation for the stress field, a nonlinear hyperbolic variational equation for the displacement field and a linear variational equation for the electric potential field. An existence and uniqueness result is proved using Gronwall's lemma, adequate auxiliary …
We consider weakly coupled systems of semilinear viscoelastic wave equations with different power source nonlinearities in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq1$ as follows: \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{aligned} &u_{tt}-Δu+g\astΔu+u_t=|\partial_t^{\ell}v|^p,\\ &v_{tt}-Δv+g\astΔv+v_t=|\partial_t^{\ell}u|^q,\\ \end{aligned}\right. \end{equation*} with $\ell=0,1$ and $p,q>1$. After presenting $L^m-L^r$ estimates with $1\leq m\leq r\leq \infty$ of solutions to the corresponding linearized problem with vanishing right-hand side, we prove the existence of global in time solutions to the weakly coupled systems,…
In this paper we study the homogenization of a linear elastodynamics system in an elastic body with soft inclusions, which is embedded in a highly oscillating magnetic field. We show two limit behaviors according to the magnetic field. On the one hand, if the magnetic field has two different directions on the interface between the hard phase and the soft phase, then the limit of the displacement in the hard phase is independent of time, so that the magnetic field induces an effective infinite mass. On the other hand, if the magnetic field has a constant direction $ξ$ on the interface, then the…
We prove that there exists a weak solution to a system governing an unsteady flow of a viscoelastic fluid in three dimensions, for arbitrarily large time interval and data. The fluid is described by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for the velocity $v$, coupled with a diffusive variant of a combination of the Oldroyd-B and the Giesekus models for a tensor $\mathbb{B}$. By a proper choice of the constitutive relations for the Helmholtz free energy (which, however, is non-standard in the current literature, despite the fact that this choice is well motivated from the point of view of p…
