We prove that there exists a weak solution to a system governing an unsteady flow of a viscoelastic fluid in three dimensions, for arbitrarily large time interval and data. The fluid is described by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for the velocity $v$, coupled with a diffusive variant of a combination of the Oldroyd-B and the Giesekus models for a tensor $\mathbb{B}$. By a proper choice of the constitutive relations for the Helmholtz free energy (which, however, is non-standard in the current literature, despite the fact that this choice is well motivated from the point of view of physics) and for the energy dissipation, we are able to prove that $\mathbb{B}$ enjoys the same regularity as $v$ in the classical three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. This enables us to handle any kind of objective derivative of $\mathbb{B}$, thus obtaining existence results for the class of diffusive Johnson-Segalman models as well. Moreover, using a suitable approximation scheme, we are able to show that $\mathbb{B}$ remains positive definite if the initial datum was a positive definite matrix (in a pointwise sense). We also show how the model we are considering can be derived from basic balance equations and thermodynamical principles in a natural way.
This paper deals with the rigorous study of the diffusive stress relaxation in the multidimensional system arising in the mathematical modeling of viscoelastic materials. The control of an appropriate high order energy shall lead to the proof of that limit in Sobolev space. It is shown also as the same result can be obtained in terms of relative modulate energies.
We introduce a one-dimensional stress-rate type nonlinear viscoelastic model for solids that obey the assumptions of the strain-limiting theory. Unlike the classical viscoelasticity theory, the critical hypothesis in the present strain-limiting theory is that the linearized strain depends nonlinearly on the stress and the stress rate. We show the thermodynamic consistency of the model using the complementary free energy, or equivalently, the Gibbs free energy. This allows us to take the stress and the stress rate as primitive variables instead of kinematical quantities such as deformation or s…
We develop a mathematical theory for a class of compressible viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion. Our approach is based on the concepts used in the nowadays standard theory of compressible Newtonian fluids as renormalization, effective viscous flux identity, compensated compactness. The presence of the extra stress, however, requires substantial modification of these techniques, in particular, a new version of the effective viscous flux identity is derived. With help of these tools, we show the existence of global--in--time weak solutions for any finite energy initial data.
Motivated by rate-independent stress-strain hysteresis observed in filled rubber, this article considers a scalar viscoelastic model in which the constitutive law is random and varies on a lengthscale which is small relative to the overall size of the solid. Using stochastic two-scale convergence as introduced by Bourgeat, Mikelic and Wright, we obtain the homogenized limit of the evolution, and demonstrate that under certain hypotheses, the homogenized model exhibits hysteretic behaviour which persists under asymptotically slow loading. These results are illustrated by means of numerical simu…
We establish the long-time existence of large-data weak solutions to a system of nonlinear partial differential equations. The system of interest governs the motion of non-Newtonian fluids described by a simplified viscoelastic rate-type model with a stress-diffusion term. The simplified model shares many qualitative features with more complex viscoelastic rate-type models that are frequently used in the modeling of fluids with complicated microstructure. As such, the simplified model provides important preliminary insight into the mathematical properties of these more complex and practically …
We consider the system of partial differential equations governing two-dimensional flows of a robust class of viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion, involving a general objective derivative. The studied system generalizes the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations for the fluid velocity $v$ and pressure $p$ by the presence of an additional term in the constitutive equation for the Cauchy stress expressed in terms of a positive definite tensor $B$. The tensor $B$ evolves according to a diffusive variant of an equation that can be viewed as a combination of corresponding counterpa…
Our purpose is to show the existence of weak solutions for unsteady flow of non-Newtonian incompressible nonhomogeneous, heat-conducting fluids with generalised form of the stress tensor without any restriction on its upper growth. Motivated by fluids of nonstandard rheology we focus on the general form of growth conditions for the stress tensor which makes anisotropic Musielak-Orlicz spaces a suitable function space for the considered problem. We do not assume any smallness condition on initial data in order to obtain long-time existence. Within the proof we use monotonicity methods, integrat…
We prove the existence of large-data global-in-time weak solutions to an evolutionary PDE system describing flows of incompressible \emph{heat-conducting} viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress-diffusion, subject to a stick-slip boundary condition for the velocity and a homogeneous Neumann boundary condition for the extra stress tensor. In the introductory section we develop the thermodynamic foundations of the proposed model, and we document the role of thermodynamics in obtaining critical structural relations between the quantities of interest. These structural relations are then exploite…
We study the generalized Oldroyd model with viscosity depending on the shear stress behaving like $μ(\mathbf{D}) \sim |\mathbf{D}|^{p-2}$ ($p>\frac 65$) regularized by a nonlinear stress diffusion. Using the Lipschitz truncation method we are able to prove global existence of weak solution to the corresponding system of partial differential equations.
We provide a proof of global regularity of solutions of some models of viscoelastic flow with an integral constitutive law, in the two spatial dimensions and in a periodic domain. Models that are included in these results are classical models for flow memory: for instance some K-BKZ models, the PSM model or the Wagner model. The proof is based on the fact that these models naturally give a $L^\infty$-bound on the stress and that they allow to control the spatial gradient of the stress. The main result does not cover the case of the Oldroyd-B model.
This paper is concerned with regular flows of incompressible weakly viscoelastic fluids which obey a differential constitutive law of Oldroyd type. We study the newtonian limit for weakly viscoelastic fluid flows in $\R^N$ or $\T^N$ for $N=2, 3$, when the Weissenberg number (relaxation time measuring the elasticity effect in the fluid) tends to zero. More precisely, we prove that the velocity field and the extra-stress tensor converge in their existence spaces (we examine the Sobolev-$H^s$ theory and the Besov-$B^{s,1}_2$ theory to reach the critical case $s= N/2$) to the corresponding newtoni…
In this work we prove local existence of strong solutions to the initial-value problem arising in one-dimensional strain-limiting viscoelasticity, which is based on a nonlinear constitutive relation between the linearized strain, the rate of change of the linearized strain and the stress. The model is a generalization of the nonlinear Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic solid under the assumption that the strain and the strain rate are small. We define an initial-value problem for the stress variable and then, under the assumption that the nonlinear constitutive function is strictly increasing, we conve…
We apply a quasistatic nonlinear model for nonsimple viscoelastic materials at a finite-strain setting in the Kelvin's-Voigt's rheology to derive a viscoelastic plate model of von Kármán type. We start from time-discrete solutions to a model of three-dimensional viscoelasticity where the viscosity stress tensor complies with the principle of time-continuous frame-indifference. Combining the derivation of nonlinear plate theory by Friesecke, James and Müller, and the abstract theory of gradient flows in metric spaces by Sandier and Serfaty we perform a dimension-reduction from 3D to 2D and iden…
We consider a system of evolutionary equations that is capable of describing certain viscoelastic effects in linearized yet nonlinear models of solid mechanics. The essence of the paper is that the constitutive relation, involving the Cauchy stress, the small strain tensor and the symmetric velocity gradient, is given in an implicit form. For a large class of implicit constitutive relations we establish the existence and uniqueness of a global-in-time large-data weak solution. We then focus on the class of so-called limiting strain models, i.e., models for which the magnitude of the strain ten…

We prove the local in time existence of the classical solutions to the system of equations of isothermal viscoelasticity with clamped boundary conditions. We deal with a general form of viscous stress tensor $\mathcal{Z}(F,\dot F)$, assuming a Korn-type condition on its derivative $D_{\dot F}\mathcal{Z}(F, \dot F)$. This condition is compatible with the balance of angular momentum, frame invariance and the Claussius-Duhem inequality. We give examples of linear and nonlinear (in $\dot F$) tensors $\mathcal{Z}$ satisfying these required conditions.
In this paper we study the existence of weak solutions to an unsteady system describing the motion of micro-polar electrorheological fluids. The constitutive relations for the stress tensors belong to the class of generalized Newtonian fluids. Using the Lipschitz truncation and the solenoidal Lipschitz truncation we establish the existence of global solutions for shear exponents $p>6/5$ in three-dimensional domains.
A wide and critical comparison of the capability of Method of Characteristics, Explicit Path-Conservative Finite Volume Method and Semi-Implicit Staggered Finite Volume Method is presented and discussed, in terms of accuracy and efficiency. The viscoelastic behaviour of the pipe wall, the effects of the unsteadiness of the flow on the friction losses, cavitation and cross-sectional changes are considered. The analyses are performed comparing numerical solutions obtained using the three models against experimental data and analytical solutions. Water hammer studies in high density polyethylene …
Amplification of deterministic disturbances in inertialess shear-driven channel flows of viscoelastic fluids is examined by analyzing the frequency responses from spatio-temporal body forces to the velocity and polymer stress fluctuations. In strongly elastic flows, we show that disturbances with large streamwise length scales may be significantly amplified even in the absence of inertia. For fluctuations without streamwise variations, we derive explicit analytical expressions for the dependence of the worst-case amplification (from different forcing to different velocity and polymer stress co…
We investigate mathematical properties of the system of nonlinear partial differential equations that describe, under certain simplifying assumptions, evolutionary processes in water-saturated granular materials. The unconsolidated solid matrix behaves as an ideal plastic material before the activation takes place and then it starts to flow as a Newtonian or a generalized Newtonian fluid. The plastic yield stress is non-constant and depends on the difference between the given lithostatic pressure and the pressure of the fluid in a pore space. We study unsteady three-dimensional flows in an imp…
