We consider nonlinear viscoelastic materials of Kelvin-Voigt type with stored energies satisfying an Andrews-Ball condition, allowing for non convexity in a compact set. Existence of weak solutions with deformation gradients in $H^1$ is established for energies of any superquadratic growth. In two space dimensions, weak solutions notably turn out to be unique in this class. Conservation of energy for weak solutions in two and three dimensions, as well as global regularity for smooth initial data in two dimensions are established under additional mild restrictions on the growth of the stored energy.
In this paper we study the stability problem of a tree of elastic strings with local Kelvin-Voigt damping on some of the edges. Under the compatibility condition of displacement and strain and continuity condition of damping coefficients at the vertices of the tree, exponential/polynomial stability are proved.
We study in this article decay rates for Kelvin-Voigt damped wave equations under a geometric control condition. We prove that when the damping coefficient is sufficiently smooth ($C^1$ vanishing nicely) we show that exponential decay follows from geometric control conditions (see~\cite{BuCh, Te12} for similar results under stronger assumptions on the damping function).
We consider the Kelvin-Voigt model for the viscoelasticity, and prove a Carleman estimate for functions without compact supports. Then we apply the Carleman estimate to prove the Lipschitz stability in determining a spatial varying function in an external source term of Kelvin-Voigt model by a single measurement. Finally as a related system, we consider an isothermal compressible fluid system and apply the Carleman estimate to establish the Lipschitz stability for an inverse source problem for the compressible fluid system.
In this paper we analyze the long time behavior of a wave equation with local Kelvin-Voigt Damping. Through introducing proper class symbol and pseudo-differential calculus, we obtain a Carleman estimate, and then establish an estimate on the corresponding resolvent operator. As a result, we show the logarithmic decay rate for energy of the system without any geometric assumption on the subdomain on which the damping is effective.
In this paper we consider a stabilization problem for the abstract-wave equation with delay. We prove an exponential stability result for appropriate damping coefficient. The proof of the main result is based on a frequency-domain approach.
In this paper, a nonlinear axially moving string with the Kelvin-Voigt damping is considered. It is proved that the string is stable, i.e., its transversal displacement converges to zero when the axial speed of the string is less than a certain critical value. The proof is established by showing that a Lyapunov function corresponding to the string decays to zero exponentially. It is also shown that the string displacement is bounded when a bounded distributed force is applied to it transversally. Furthermore, a few open problems regarding the stability and stabilization of strings with the Kel…
We consider the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation with a local Kelvin-Voigt dissipation type in the interval $(-1,1)$. The coefficient damping is only effective in $(0,1)$ and is degenerating near the $0$ point with a speed at least equal to $x^α$ where $α\in(0,5)$. We prove that the semigroup corresponding to the system is polynomially stable and the decay rate depends on the degeneracy speed $α$.
In this paper, we consider an inverse problem for three dimensional viscoelastic fluid flow equations, which arises from the motion of Kelvin-Voigt fluids in bounded domains (a hyperbolic type problem). This inverse problem aims to reconstruct the velocity and kernel of the memory term simultaneously, from the measurement described as the integral over determination condition. By using the contraction mapping principle in an appropriate space, a local in time existence and uniqueness result for the inverse problem of Kelvin-Voigt fluids are obtained. Furthermore, using similar arguments, a glo…
In this paper, we study the direct/indirect stability of locally coupled wave equations with local Kelvin-Voigt dampings/damping and by assuming that the supports of the dampings and the coupling coefficients are disjoint. First, we prove the well-posedness, strong stability, and polynomial stability for some one dimensional coupled systems. Moreover, under some geometric control condition, we prove the well-posedness and strong stability in the multi-dimensional case.
In this paper, we study the indirect stability of Timoshenko system with local or global Kelvin-Voigt damping, under fully Dirichlet or mixed boundary conditions. Unlike the results of H. L. Zhao, K. S. Liu, and C. G. Zhang and of X. Tian and Q. Zhang, in this paper, we consider the Timoshenko system with only one locally or globally distributed Kelvin-Voigt damping. Indeed, we prove that the energy of the system decays polynomially and that the obtained decay rate is in some sense optimal. The method is based on the frequency domain approach combining with multiplier method.
In this paper we consider elastic waves with Kelvin-Voigt damping in 2D. For the linear problem, applying pointwise estimates of the partial Fourier transform of solutions in the Fourier space and asymptotic expansions of eigenvalues and their eigenprojections, we obtain sharp energy decay estimates with additional $L^m$ regularity and $L^p-L^q$ estimates on the conjugate line. Furthermore, we derive asymptotic profiles of solutions under different assumptions of initial data. For the semilinear problem, we use the derived $L^2-L^2$ estimates with additional $L^m$ regularity to prove global (i…
In this paper, we investigate the stabilization of a linear Bresse system with one discontinuous local internal viscoelastic damping of Kelvin-Voigt type acting on the axial force, under fully Dirichlet boundary conditions. First, using a general criteria of Arendt-Batty, we prove the strong stability of our system. Finally, using a frequency domain approach combined with the multiplier method, we prove that the energy of our system decays polynomially with different rates.
We consider a coupled wave system with partial Kelvin-Voigt damping in the interval (-1,1), where one wave is dissipative and the other does not. When the damping is effective in the whole domain (-1,1) it was proven in H.Portillo Oquendo and P.Sanez Pacheco, optimal decay for coupled waves with Kelvin-voigt damping, Applied Mathematics Letters 67 (2017), 16-20. That the energy is decreasing over the time with a rate equal to $t^{-\frac{1}{2}}$. In this paper, using the frequency domain method we show the effect of the coupling and the non smoothness of the damping coefficient on the energy de…
We show in this article how perturbative approaches~from our work with Hitrik (see also the work by Anantharaman-Macia) and the {\em black box} strategy from~ our work with Zworski allow to obtain decay rates for Kelvin-Voigt damped wave equations from quite standard resolvent estimates : Carleman estimates or geometric control estimates for Helmoltz equationCarleman or other resolvent estimates for the Helmoltz equation. Though in this context of Kelvin Voigt damping, such approach is unlikely to allow for the optimal results when additional geometric assumptions are considered (see \cite{BuC…
In this paper we will study the asymptotic behaviour of the energy decay of a transmission plate equation with locally distributed Kelvin-Voigt feedback. Precisly, we shall prove that the energy decay at least logarithmically over the time. The originality of this method comes from the fact that using a Carleman estimate for a transmission second order system which will be derived from the plate equation to establish a resolvent estimate which provide, by the famous Burq's result [Bur98], the kind of decay mentionned above.
We consider the wave equation with Kelvin-Voigt damping in a bounded domain. The exponential stability result proposed by Liu and Rao or Tébou for that system assumes that the damping is localized in a neighborhood of the whole or a part of the boundary under some consideration. In this paper we propose to deal with this geometrical condition by considering a singular Kelvin-Voigt damping which is localized faraway from the boundary. In this particular case it was proved by Liu and Liu the lack of the uniform decay of the energy. However, we show that the energy of the wave equation decreases …
In this paper, we investigate the energy decay of hyperbolic systems of wave-wave, wave-Euler- Bernoulli beam and beam-beam types. The two equations are coupled through boundary connection with only one localized non-smooth fractional Kelvin-Voigt damping. First, we reformulate each system into an augmented model and using a general criteria of Arendt-Batty, we prove that our models are strongly stable. Next, by using frequency domain approach, combined with multiplier technique and some interpolation inequalities, we establish different types of polynomial energy decay rate which depends on t…
An initial-boundary value problem for a viscoelastic wave equation subject to a strong time-localized delay in a Kelvin & Voigt-type material law is considered. Transforming the equation to an abstract Cauchy problem on the extended phase space, a global well-posedness theory is established using the operator semigroup theory both in Sobolev-valued $C^{0}$- and BV-spaces. Under appropriate assumptions on the coefficients, a global exponential decay rate is obtained and the stability region in the parameter space is further explored using the Lyapunov's indirect method. The singular limit $τ\to…
We investigate the stabilization of a multidimensional system of coupled wave equations with only one Kelvin Voigt damping. Using a unique continuation result based on a Carleman estimate and a general criteria of Arendt Batty, we prove the strong stability of the system in the absence of the compactness of the resolvent without any geometric condition. Then, using a spectral analysis, we prove the non uniform stability of the system. Further, using frequency domain approach combined with a multiplier technique, we establish some polynomial stability results by considering different geometric …
The frame-indifferent thermodynamically-consistent model of thermoviscoelasticity at large strain is formulated in the reference configuration with using the concept of the second-grade nonsimple materials. We focus on physically correct viscous stresses that are frame indifferent under time-dependent rotations. Also elastic stresses are frame indifferent under rotations and respect positivity of the determinant of the deformation gradient. The heat transfer is governed by the Fourier law in the actual deformed configuration, which leads to a nontrivial description when pulled back into the re…
We investigate the stability of a one-dimensional wave equation with non smooth localized internal viscoelastic damping of Kelvin-Voigt type and with boundary or localized internal delay feedback. The main novelty in this paper is that the Kelvin-Voigt and the delay damping are both localized via non smooth coefficients. In the case that the Kelvin-Voigt damping is localized faraway from the tip and the wave is subjected to a locally distributed internal or boundary delay feedback, we prove that the energy of the system decays polynomially of type t^{-4}. However, an exponential decay of the e…
We model a 3D turbulent fluid, evolving toward a statistical equilibrium, by adding to the equations for the mean field $(v, p)$ a term like $-α\nabla\cdot(\ell(x) D v_t)$. This is of the Kelvin-Voigt form, where the Prandtl mixing length $\ell$ is not constant and vanishes at the solid walls. We get estimates for velocity $v$ in $L^\infty_t H^1_x \cap W^{1,2}_t H^{1/2}_x$, that allow us to prove the existence and uniqueness of a regular-weak solutions $(v, p)$ to the resulting system, for a given fixed eddy viscosity. We then prove a structural compactness result that highlights the robustnes…
In this paper, we study the stability problem of a star-shaped network of elastic strings with a local Kelvin-Voigt damping. Under the assumption that the damping coefficients have some singularities near the transmission point, we prove that the semigroup corresponding to the system is polynomially stable and the decay rates depends on the speed of the degeneracy. This result improves the decay rate of the semigroup associated to the system on an earlier result of Z.~Liu and Q.~Zhang in \cite{LZ} involving the wave equation with local Kelvin-Voigt damping and non-smooth coefficient at interfa…
We study the energy decay rate of the Kelvin-Voigt damped wave equation with piecewise smooth damping on the multi-dimensional domain. Under suitable geometric assumptions on the support of the damping, we obtain the optimal polynomial decay rate which turns out to be different from the one-dimensional case studied in \cite{LR05}. This optimal decay rate is saturated by high energy quasi-modes localised on geometric optics rays which hit the interface along non orthogonal neither tangential directions. The proof uses semi-classical analysis of boundary value problems.
A classical 3-D thermoviscoelastic system of Kelvin-Voigt type is considered. The existence and uniqueness of a global regular solution is proved without small data assumption. The existence proof is based on the successive approximation method. The crucial part constitute a priori estimates on an arbitrary finite time interval, which are derived with the help of the theory of anisotropic Sobolev spaces with a mixed norm.
This paper is concerned with the decay estimate of solutions to the semilinear wave equation subject to two localized dampings in a bounded domain. The first one is of the nonlinear Kelvin-Voigt type and is distributed around a neighborhood of the boundary according to the Geometric Control Condition. While the second one is a frictional damping and we consider it hurting the geometric condition of control. We show uniform decay rate results of the corresponding energy for all initial data taken in bounded sets of finite energy phase-space. The proof is based on obtaining an observability ineq…
In this paper, we consider the longitudinal and transversal vibrations of the transmission Euler-Bernoulli beam with Kelvin-Voigt damping distributed locally on any subinterval of the region occupied by the beam and only in one side of the transmission point. We prove that the semigroup associated with the equation for the transversal motion of the beam is exponentially stable, although the semigroup associated with the equation for the longitudinal motion of the beam is polynomially stable. Due to the locally distributed and unbounded nature of the damping, we use a frequency domain method an…
We study output tracking and disturbance rejection for an Euler-Bernoulli beam with Kelvin-Voigt damping. The system has distributed control and pointwise observation. As our main result we design a finite-dimensional low-order internal model based controller that is based on a spectral Galerkin method and model reduction by Balanced Truncation. The performance of the designed controller is demonstrated with numerical simulations and compared to the performance of a low-gain internal model based controller.

We consider an elastic/viscoelastic transmission problem for the Bresse system with fully Dirichlet or Dirichlet-Neumann-Neumann boundary conditions. The physical model consists of three wave equations coupled in certain pattern. The system is damped directly or indirectly by global or local Kelvin-Voigt damping. Actually, the number of the dampings, their nature of distribution (locally or globally) and the smoothness of the damping coefficient at the interface play a crucial role in the type of the stabilization of the corresponding semigroup. Indeed, using frequency domain approach combined…
Let a fourth and a second order evolution equations be coupled via the interface by transmission conditions, and suppose that the first one is stabilized by a localized distributed feedback. What will then be the effect of such a partial stabilization on the decay of solutions at infinity? Is the behavior of the first component sufficient to stabilize the second one? The answer given in this paper is that sufficiently smooth solutions decay logarithmically at infinity even the feedback dissipation affects an arbitrarily small open subset of the interior. The method used, in this case, is based…

In the present paper, we are concerned with the semilinear viscoelastic wave equation subject to a locally distributed dissipative effect of Kelvin-Voigt type, posed on a bounded domain with smooth boundary. We begin with an auxiliary problem and we show that its solution decays exponentially in the weak phase space. The method of proof combines an observability inequality and unique continuation properties. Then, passing to the limit, we recover the original model and prove its global existence as well as the exponential stability.
We study a class of nonlinear fractional differential equations with multiple delays, which is represented by the Voigt creep fractional model of viscoelasticity. We discuss two Voigt models, the first being linear and the second being nonlinear. The linear Voigt model give us the physical interpretation and is associated with important results since the creep function characterizes the viscoelastic behavior of stress and strain. For the nonlinear model of Voigt, our theoretical study and analysis provides existence and stability, where time delays are expressed in terms of Boltzmann's superpo…
In this paper we extend the asymptotic analysis in [LLOO], performed on a structure consisting of two linearly elastic bodies connected by a thin soft nonlinear Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic adhesive layer, to the case in which the total mass of the layer remains strictly positive as its thickness tends to zero. We obtain convergence results by means of a nonlinear version of Trotter's theory of approximation of semigroups acting on variable Hilbert spaces. Differently from the limit models derived in [LLOO], in the present analysis the dynamic effects on the surface to which the layer shrinks do …
The frame-indifferent viscoelasticity in Kelvin-Voigt rheology at large strains is formulated in the reference configuration (i.e. using the Lagrangian approach) considering also the possible self-contact in the actual deformed configuration. Using the concept of 2nd-grade nonsimple materials, existence of certain weak solutions which are a.e. injective is shown by converging an approximate solution obtained by the implicit time discretisation.
A mechanical interaction of compressible viscoelastic fluids with viscoelastic solids in Kelvin-Voigt rheology using the concept of higher-order (so-called 2nd-grade multipolar) viscosity is investigated in a quasistatic variant. The no-slip contact between fluid and solid is considered and the Eulerian-frame return-mapping technique is used for both the fluid and the solid models, which allows for a "monolithic" formulation of this fluid-structure interaction problem. Existence and a certain regularity of weak solutions is proved by a Schauder fixed-point argument combined with a suitable reg…
The paper is devoted to homogenization of two-phase incompressible viscoelastic flows with disordered microstructure. We study two cases. In the first case, both phases are modeled as Kelvin-Voight viscoelastic materials. In the second case, one phase is a Kelvin-Voight material, and the other is a viscous Newtonian fluid. The microscale system contains the conservation of mass and balance of momentum equations. The inertial terms in the momentum equation incorporate the actual interface advected by the flow. In the constitutive equations, a frozen interface is employed. The interface geometry…
In this paper we consider a multi-dimensional damped semiliear wave equation with dynamic boundary conditions, related to the Kelvin-Voigt damping. We firstly prove the local existence by using the Faedo-Galerkin approximations combined with a contraction mapping theorem. Secondly, the exponential growth of the energy and the $L^p$ norm of the solution is presented.
The thermodynamic model of visco-elastic deformable magnetic materials at finite strains is formulated in a fully Eulerian way in rates. The Landau theory applies for ferro-to-para-magnetic phase transition, the gradient theory (leading exchange energy) for magnetization with general mechanically dependent coefficient, hysteresis in magnetization evolution by Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation involving objective corotational time derivative of magnetization, and demagnetizing field are considered in the model. The Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic rheology with a higher-order viscosity (exploiting the …
Isothermal visco-elastodynamics in the Kelvin-Voigt rheology is formulated in the spatial Eulerian coordinates in terms of velocity and deformation gradient. A generally nonconvex (possibly also frame-indifferent) stored energy is admitted. The model involves a nonlinear 2nd-grade nonsimple (multipolar) viscosity so that the velocity field is well regular. To simplify analytical arguments, volume variations of the solid material are assumed to be only rather small so that the mass density is constant, exploiting the concept of semi-compressible materials. Existence of weak solutions is proved …
