We generalize the electromagnetic duality between a massless, canonical scalar field and a 2-form gauge field in 4-dimensional spacetime to scalar-tensor theories. We derive the action of 2-form gauge field that is dual to two kinds of scalar-tensor theories: shift symmetric K-essence theory and the shift symmetric Horndeski theory up to quadratic in scalar field. The former case, the dual 2-form has a nonlinear kinetic term. The latter case, the dual 2-form has non-trivial interactions with gravity through Einstein tensor. In both case, the duality relation is modified from usual case, that is, the dual 2-form field is not simply given by the Hodge dual of the gradient of the scalar field.
Following the recent studies of the trickiness in spin and orbital angular momentum of the vector gauge fields, we perform here a parallel analysis for the tensor gauge field, which has certain relation to gravitation. Similarly to the vector case, we find a nice feature that after removing all gauge degrees of freedom the angular momentum of the tensor gauge field vanishes for a stationary system. This angular momentum also shows a one-parameter invariance over the infinitely many ways of complete gauge fixing for the tensor field. The tensor gauge coupling, however, does exhibit a critical d…
We discuss various proposals of separating a tensor field into pure-gauge and gauge-invariant components. Such tensor field decomposition is intimately related to the effort of identifying the real gravitational degrees of freedom out of the metric tensor in Einstein's general relativity. We show that, as for a vector field, the tensor field decomposition has exact correspondence to, and can be derived from, the gauge-fixing approach. The complication for the tensor field, however, is that there are infinitely many complete gauge conditions, in contrast to the uniqueness of Coulomb gauge for a…
We suggest an extension of the Yang-Mills theory which includes non-Abelian tensor gauge fields. The invariant Lagrangian is quadratic in the field strength tensors and describes interaction of charged tensor gauge bosons of arbitrary large integer spin $1,2,...$. Non-Abelian tensor gauge fields can be viewed as a unique gauge field with values in the infinite-dimensional current algebra associated with compact Lie group. The full Lagrangian exhibits also enhanced local gauge invariance with double number of gauge parameters which allows to eliminate all negative norm states of the nonsymmetri…
Invariant tensors play an important role in gauge theories, for example, in dualities of N=1 gauge theories. However, for theories with fields in representations larger than the fundamental, the full set of invariant tensors is often difficult to construct. We present a new approach to the construction of these tensors, and use it to find the complete set of invariant tensors of a theory of SO(3) with fields in the symmetric tensor representation.
We suggest an infinite-dimensional extension of the gauge transformations which includes non-Abelian tensor gauge fields. Extended gauge transformations of non-Abelian tensor gauge fields form a new large group which has natural geometrical interpretation it terms of extended current algebra associated with compact Lie group. We shall demonstrate that one can construct two infinite series of gauge invariant quadratic forms, so that a linear combination of them comprises the general Lagrangian. The general Lagrangian exhibits enhanced local gauge invariants with double number of gauge parameter…
We calculate the leading-order scattering amplitude of one vector and two tensor gauge bosons in a recently proposed non-Abelian tensor gauge field theory and open superstring theory. The linear in momenta part of the superstring amplitude has identical Lorentz structure with the gauge theory, while its cubic in momenta part can be identified with an effective Lagrangian which is constructed using generalized non-Abelian field strength tensors.
We study the tensor consistency relation in models of axion inflation with an SU(2) gauge field. In the tensor sector, we have two spin-2 modes, the standard gravity waves and the tensor perturbations of the SU(2) gauge field which sources the gravity waves at the linear level. Interestingly enough, we find that the gravity waves are adiabatic and Maldacena's consistency relation including a long wavelength gravity wave holds in this setup. However, since it is partially polarized, there is a difference between the (n+1)-point functions with different helicity states proportional to the ratio …
A systematic method is presented for the construction and classification of algebras of gauge transformations for arbitrary high rank tensor gauge fields. For every tensor gauge field of a given rank, the gauge transformation will be stated, in a generic way, via an ansatz that contains all the possible terms, with arbitrary coefficients and the maximum number of tensor gauge functions. The requirement for the closure of the algebra will prove to be restrictive, but, nevertheless, leave a variety of choices. Properly adjusting the values of the initial coefficients and imposing restrictions on…
We present an efficient method for finding the independent invariant tensors of a gauge theory. Our method uses a theorem relating invariant tensors and D-flat directions in field space. We apply our method to several examples-- SO(3) with symmetric tensors, SU(2) with a dimension 4 representation, and SU(3) with matter in the sextet-- and find the set of independent invariant tensors in these theories.
Motivated by the close connection of tensor models to the SYK model, we use representation theory to construct the complete set of gauge invariant observables for bosonic and fermionic tensor models. Correlation functions of the gauge invariant operators in the free theory are computed exactly. The gauge invariant operators close a ring. The structure constants of the ring are described explicitly. Finally, we construct a collective field theory description of the bosonic tensor model.
We compute the complete 3- and 4-dimensional tensor hierarchies, i.e. sets of p-form fields, with $1\le p\le D$, which realize an off-shell algebra of bosonic gauge transformations. We show how these tensor hierarchies can be put on-shell by introducing a set of duality relations, thereby introducing additional scalars and a metric tensor. These so-called duality hierarchies encode the equations of motion of the bosonic part of the most general gauged supergravity theories in those dimensions, including the (projected) scalar equations of motion. We construct gauge-invariant actions that inclu…
We construct the duality-symmetric actions for a large class of six-dimensional models describing hierarchies of non-Abelian scalar, vector and tensor fields related to each other by first-order (self-)duality equations that follow from these actions. In particular, this construction provides a Lorentz invariant action for non-Abelian self-dual tensor fields. The class of models includes the bosonic sectors of the 6d (1,0) superconformal models of interacting non-Abelian self-dual tensor, vector, and hypermultiplets.
We construct the general four-dimensional N=2 supergravity theory coupled to vector and vector-tensor multiplets only. Consistency of the construction requires the introduction of the vector fields dual to those sitting in the same supermultiplets as the antisymmetric tensors, as well as the scalar fields dual to the tensors themselves. Gauge symmetries also involving these additional fields guarantee the correct counting of the physical degrees of freedom.
The non-Abelian tensor gauge fields take value in extended Poincaré algebra. In order to define the invariant Lagrangian we introduce a vector variable in two alternative ways: through the transversal representation of the extended Poincaré algebra and through the path integral over the auxiliary vector field with the U(1) Abelian action. We demonstrate that path integral formulation allows to fix the unitary gauge, derive scattering amplitudes in spinor representation and to define the gauge invariant Lagrangian in a curved space-time.
We develop a BRST symmetric gaugeon formalism for the Abelian rank-2 antisymmetric tensor field in the Lorentz breaking framework. The Lorentz breaking is achieved here by considering a proper subgroup of Lorentz group together with translation. In this scenario, the gaugeon fields together with the standard fields of the Abelian rank-2 antisymmetric tensor theory get mass. In order to develop the gaugeon formulation for this theory in VSR, we first introduce a set of dipole vector fields as a quantum gauge freedom to the action. In order to quantize the dipole vector fields, the VSR-modified …
Tensor network techniques have proved to be powerful tools that can be employed to explore the large scale dynamics of lattice systems. Nonetheless, the redundancy of degrees of freedom in lattice gauge theories (and related models) poses a challenge for standard tensor network algorithms. We accommodate for such systems by introducing an additional structure decorating the tensor network. This allows to explicitly preserve the gauge symmetry of the system under coarse graining and straightforwardly interpret the fixed point tensors. We propose and test (for models with finite Abelian groups) …
We propose a duality for N=2 d=3 Chern-Simons gauge theories with orthogonal gauge groups and matter in the vector representation. This duality generalizes level-rank duality for pure Chern-Simons gauge theories with orthogonal gauge groups and is reminiscent of Seiberg duality in four dimensions. We perform extensive checks by comparing partition functions of theories related by dualities. We also determine the conformal dimensions of fields using Z-extremization.
We compare the structure of the tree level scattering amplitudes in non-Abelian tensor gauge field theory and in open string theory with Chan-Paton charges. We limit ourselves considering only lower rank tensor fields in both theories. We identify the symmetric and antisymmetric components of the second rank tensor gauge field with the string excitations on the third and forth levels. In the process of this identification we have been selecting only those parts of the tree level scattering amplitudes in the open string theory which have dimensionless coupling constants in four dimensions. It s…
This manuscript reports the first order $β$-functions of recently proved just renormalizable random tensor models endowed with a $U(1)^d$ gauge invariance [arXiv:1211. 2618]. The models that we consider are polynomial Abelian $\vp^4_6$ and $\vp^6_5$ models. We show in this work that both models are asymptotically free in the UV.
We reformulate gauge theories in analogy with the vierbein formalism of general relativity. More specifically, we reformulate gauge theories such that their gauge dynamical degrees of freedom are local fields that transform linearly under the dual representation of the charged matter field. These local fields, which naively have the interpretation of non-local operators similar to Wilson lines, satisfy constraint equations. A set of basis tensor fields are used to solve these constraint equations, and their field theory is constructed. A new local symmetry in terms of the basis tensor fields i…
Basis tensor gauge theory is a vierbein analog reformulation of ordinary gauge theories in which the difference of local field degrees of freedom has the interpretation of an object similar to a Wilson line. Here we present a non-Abelian basis tensor gauge theory formalism. Unlike in the Abelian case, the map between the ordinary gauge field and the basis tensor gauge field is nonlinear. To test the formalism, we compute the beta function and the two-point function at the one-loop level in non-Abelian basis tensor gauge theory and show that it reproduces the well-known results from the usual f…
We suggest the new feature of primordial gravitational waves sourced by the axion-gauge couplings, whose forms are motivated by the dimensional reduction of the form field in the string theory. In our inflationary model, as an inflaton we adopt two types of axion, dubbed the model-independent axion and the model-dependent axion, which couple with two gauge groups with different sign combination each other. Due to these forms both polarization modes of gauge fields are amplified and enhance both helicies of tensor modes during inflation. We point out the possibility that a primordial blue-tilte…
We study dualities for ${\cal N}=2$ 3d Chern-Simons matter theories with gauge groups U/Sp/O, matter in the two-index tensor representations (adjoint/symmetric/antisymmetric) in addition to the fundamental representation, and a superpotential. These dualities are analogous to Kutasov-Schwimmer-Seiberg dualities in 4d. We test them by computing the superconformal index and the partition function on $S^3$ for many dual pairs and find perfect agreement. In some cases we find a simple dual description for theories with tensor matter and no superpotential, thereby generalizing the "Duality Appetize…
