In this note, we improve on results of Hoppen, Kohayakawa and Lefmann about the maximum number of edge colorings without monochromatic copies of a star of a fixed size that a graph on $n$ vertices may admit. Our results rely on an improved application of an entropy inequality of Shearer.
We show that any $2$-coloring of $\mathbb{N}$ contains infinitely many monochromatic sets of the form $\{x,y,xy,x+y\},$ and more generally monochromatic sets of the form $\{x_i,\prod x_i,\sum x_i: i\leq k\}$ for any $k\in\mathbb{N}.$ Along the way we prove a monochromatic products of sums theorem that extends Hindman's theorem and a colorful variant of this result that holds in any 'balanced' coloring.

We prove a known 2-coloring of the integers $[N] := \{1,2,3,\ldots,N\}$ minimizes the number of monochromatic arithmetic 3-progressions under certain restrictions. A monochromatic arithmetic progression is a set of equally-spaced integers that are all the same color. Previous work by Parrilo, Robertson and Saracino conjectured an optimal coloring for large $N$ that involves 12 colored blocks. Here, we prove that the conjecture is optimal among anti-symmetric colorings with 12 or fewer colored blocks. We leverage a connection to the coloring of the continuous interval $[0,1]$ used by Parrilo, R…
For a fixed simple digraph $F$ and a given simple digraph $D$, an $F$-free $k$-coloring of $D$ is a vertex-coloring in which no induced copy of $F$ in $D$ is monochromatic. We study the complexity of deciding for fixed $F$ and $k$ whether a given simple digraph admits an $F$-free $k$-coloring. Our main focus is on the restriction of the problem to planar input digraphs, where it is only interesting to study the cases $k \in \{2,3\}$. From known results it follows that for every fixed digraph $F$ whose underlying graph is not a forest, every planar digraph $D$ admits an $F$-free $2$-coloring, a…
In the problem of 2-coloring without monochromatic triangles (or triangle-tree 2-coloring), vertices of the simple, connected, undirected graph are colored with either 'black' or 'white' such that there are no 3 mutually adjacent vertices of the same color. In this paper we are positively answering the question posed in our previous work, namely, if there exists an algorithm solving 2-coloring without monochromatic triangles on planar graphs with linear-time complexity.
We give a full, correct proof of the following result, earlier claimed by Erdős and Komjáth. If the Continuum Hypothesis holds then there is a coloring of the plane with countably many colors, with no monocolored right triangle.
Given an $r$-edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_n$, what is the largest number of edges in a monochromatic connected component? This natural question has only recently received the attention it deserves, with work by two disjoint subsets of the authors resolving it for the first two special cases, when $r = 2$ or $3$. Here we introduce a general framework for studying this problem and apply it to fully resolve the $r = 4$ case, showing that any $4$-edge-coloring of $K_n$ contains a monochromatic component with at least $\frac{1}{12}\binom{n}{2}$ edges, where the constant $\frac{1}{12}$ is …
Let N^{+}(k)= 2^{k/2} k^{3/2} f(k) and N^{-}(k)= 2^{k/2} k^{1/2} g(k) where 1=o(f(k)) and g(k)=o(1). We show that the probability of a random 2-coloring of {1,2,...,N^{+}(k)} containing a monochromatic k-term arithmetic progression approaches 1, and the probability of a random 2-coloring of {1,2,...,N^{-}(k)} containing a monochromatic k-term arithmetic progression approaches 0, for large k. This improves an upper bound due to Brown, who had established an analogous result for N^{+}(k)= 2^k log k f(k).
A Gallai-coloring (Gallai-$k$-coloring) is an edge-coloring (with colors from $\{1, 2, \ldots, k\}$) of a complete graph without rainbow triangles. Given a graph $H$ and a positive integer $k$, the $k$-colored Gallai-Ramsey number $GR_k(H)$ is the minimum integer $n$ such that every Gallai-$k$-coloring of the complete graph $K_n$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. In this paper, we consider two extremal problems related to Gallai-$k$-colorings. First, we determine upper and lower bounds for the maximum number of edges that are not contained in any rainbow triangle or monochromatic triangle …
An edge-coloring of a connected graph $G$ is called a {\em monochromatic connection coloring} (MC-coloring for short) if any two vertices of $G$ are connected by a monochromatic path in $G$. For a connected graph $G$, the {\em monochromatic connection number} (MC-number for short) of $G$, denoted by $mc(G)$, is the maximum number of colors that ensure $G$ has a monochromatic connection coloring by using this number of colors. This concept was introduced by Caro and Yuster in 2011. They proved that $mc(G)\leq m-n+k$ if $G$ is not a $k$-connected graph. In this paper we depict all graphs with $m…
Are monochromatic Pythagorean triples unavoidable under morphic colorings ?
毕达哥拉斯三元组是正整数a,b,c $\in$ N ${}^{+}$的三元组,满足a ${}^2$ + b ${}^2$ = c ${}^2$。
Gyárfas proved that every coloring of the edges of $K_n$ with $t+1$ colors contains a monochromatic connected component of size at least $n/t$. Later, Gyárfás and Sárközy asked for which values of $γ=γ(t)$ does the following strengthening for almost complete graphs hold: if $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $(1-γ)n$, then every $(t+1)$-edge coloring of $G$ contains a monochromatic component of size at least $n/t$. We show $γ= 1/(6t^3)$ suffices, improving a result of DeBiasio, Krueger, and Sárközy.
Let G be a vertex-colored graph. We call a vertex cut S of G a monochromatic vertex cut if the vertices of S are colored with the same color. The graph G is monochromatically vertex-disconnected if any two nonadjacent vertices of G has a monochromatic vertex cut separating them. The monochromatic vertex-disconnection number of G, denoted by mvd(G), is the maximum number of colors that are used to make G monochromatically vertex-disconnected. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to compute mvd(G) and give an mvd-coloring of the graph G. We run this algorithm with an example written in Java. T…
Consider a two-player game between players Builder and Painter. Painter begins the game by picking a coloring of the edges of $K_n$, which is hidden from Builder. In each round, Builder points to an edge and Painter reveals its color. Builder's goal is to locate a particular monochromatic structure in Painter's coloring by revealing the color of as few edges as possible. The fewest number of turns required for Builder to win this game is known as the restricted online Ramsey number. In this paper, we consider the situation where this "particular monochromatic structure" is a large matching or …
