Surface physics dominated by bulk properties has been one of the central interests in modern condensed matter physics, from electric polarization to bulk-boundary correspondence of topological insulators and superconductors. Here, we extend theory of electric polarization to chirality polarizations, that is, surface charges corresponding to local antisymmetries characterized as a bulk property. Using the notion of chirality polarizations, we prove the recently proposed spectral bulk-boundary correspondence, a generalization of bulk-boundary correspondence in chiral symmetric systems into complex frequencies. We show a physically transparent proof via Wannier functions and a formal proof by considering the change of surface chirality charges, highlighting the similarities and the differences between electric polarization and chirality polarizations.
Magnetic Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have been presumed to be immune to proximity-induced spin-singlet superconducting pairing due to a chirality blockade of the regular Andreev reflection. In this work we study all possible superconducting pairing induced in a WSM sandwiched between two conventional superconductors in a Josephson junction setup. We confirm that, while conventional intra-orbital $s$-wave pairing is present on the surface of the WSM, it cannot propagate into the bulk due to the chirality blockade. However, inter-orbital $s$-wave pairing, with both even-frequency spin-singlet and odd…
We consider a 3-dimensional (3D) non-Hermitian exceptional line semimetal model and take open boundary conditions in x, y, and z directions separately. In each case, we calculate the parameter regions where the bulk-boundary correspondence is broken. The breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence is manifested by the deviation from unit circles of generalized Brillouin zones (GBZ) and the discrepancy between spectra calculated with open boundary conditions (OBC) and periodic boundary conditions (PBC). The consistency between OBC and PBC spectra can be recovered if the PBC spectra are calcul…
The bulk-edge correspondence in topological phases is extended to systems with the generalized chiral symmetry, where the conventional chiral symmetry is broken. In such systems, we find that the edge state exhibits an unconventional behavior in the presence of the symmetry breaking by the mass, which is explored explicitly in the case of a deformed Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. The localization length of the edge states diverges at a certain critical mass, where the edge state touches to the bulk band. The edge state is specified by an imaginary wave vector that becomes real at the touching ene…
Using the Laughlin's argument on a torus with two pin-holes, we numerically demonstrate that the discontinuities of the center-of-mass work well as an invariant of the pumping phenomena during the process of the flux-attachment, trading the magnetic flux for the statistical one. This is consistent with the bulk-edge correspondence of the fractional quantum Hall effect of anyons. We also confirm that the general feature of the edge states remains unchanged during the process while the topological degeneracy is discretely changed. This supports the stability of the quantum Hall edge states in th…
It was known that for non-Hermitian topological systems due to the non-Hermitian skin effect, the bulk-edge correspondence is broken down. In this paper, by using one-dimensional Su-SchriefferHeeger model and two-dimensional (deformed) Qi-Wu-Zhang model as examples, we focus on a special type of non-Hermitian topological system without non-Hermitian skin effect-topological systems under non-Hermitian similarity transformation. In these non-Hermitian systems, the defective edge states and the breakdown of bulk-edge correspondence are discovered. To characterize the topological properties, we in…
Non-Hermitian topological systems show quite different properties as their Hermitian counterparts. An important, puzzled issue on non-Hermitian topological systems is the existence of defective edge states beyond usual bulk-boundary correspondence (BBC) that localize either on the left edge or the right edge of the one-dimensional system. In this paper, to understand the existence of the defective edge states, the theory of anomalous bulk-boundary correspondence (A-BBC) is developed that distinguishes the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence (NB-BBC) from non-Hermitian skin effect. By using …

The topological pumping [1-3] is revisited from a view point of the bulk-edge correspondence. Shift of the center of mass (CM) as a pumped charge is explicitly given by the Berry connection in time direction. We show that observed pumping is due to the bulk, but its quantization is guaranteed by singular motion of the CM caused by edge states. This is the bulk-edge correspondence in the topological pumping. A gauge invariant form of the pumped charge is proposed by the temporal gauge and is used to establish this bulk-edge correspondence.
We investigate novel features of three dimensional non-Hermitian Weyl semimetals, paying special attention to its unconventional bulk-boundary correspondence. We use the non-Bloch Chern numbers as the tool to obtain the topological phase diagram, which is also confirmed by the energy spectra from our numerical results. It is shown that, in sharp contrast to Hermitian systems, the conventional (Bloch) bulk-boundary correspondence breaks down in non-Hermitian topological semimetals, which is caused by the non-Hermitian skin effect. We establish the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence for non-…
Dirac semi-metals show a linear electronic dispersion in three dimension described by two copies of the Weyl equation, a theoretical description of massless relativistic fermions. At the surface of a crystal, the breakdown of fermion chirality is expected to produce topological surface states without any counterparts in high-energy physics nor conventional condensed matter systems, the so-called "Fermi Arcs". Here we present Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations involving the Fermi Arc states in Focused Ion Beam prepared microstructures of Cd$_3$As$_2$. Their unusual magnetic field periodicity and de…
We study the bulk-boundary correspondence for topological crystalline phases, where the crystalline symmetry is an order-two (anti)symmetry, unitary or antiunitary. We obtain a formulation of the bulk-boundary correspondence in terms of a subgroup sequence of the bulk classifying groups, which uniquely determines the topological classification of the boundary states. This formulation naturally includes higher-order topological phases as well as topologically nontrivial bulk systems without topologically protected boundary states. The complete bulk and boundary classification of higher-order to…
A scenario of non-Hermitian bulk--boundary correspondence proposed for one-dimensional topological insulators is adapted to a non-Hermitian Chern insulator to examine its applicability to two-dimensional systems. This scenario employs bulk geometry under a modified periodic boundary condition and boundary geometry under an open boundary condition. The bulk geometry is used to define a topological number, whereas the boundary geometry is used to observe the presence or absence of a topological boundary state. It is demonstrated that the bulk--boundary correspondence holds in a two-dimensional C…
Bulk-boundary correspondence is the cornerstone of topological physics. In some non-Hermitian topological system this fundamental relation is broken in the sense that the topological number calculated for the Bloch energy band under the periodic boundary condition fails to reproduce the boundary properties under the open boundary. To restore the bulk-boundary correspondence in such non-Hermitian systems a framework beyond the Bloch band theory is needed. We develop a non-Hermitian Bloch band theory based on a modified periodic boundary condition that allows a proper description of the bulk of …
The boundary of topological phases of matter can manifest its topology nature, which leads to the so-called boundary-bulk correspondence (BBC) of topological phases. In this Letter, we construct a one-to-one correspondence between the boundary theories of fermionic SPT (fSPT) phases protected by crystalline symmetry and on-site symmetry in 2D fermionic systems, which follow the so-called crystalline equivalence principle. We dub such correspondence crystalline equivalent BBC. We illustrate this correspondence by two simple examples and as an application, we discover the topological boundary th…
In this work, we study the disorder effects on the bulk-boundary correspondence of two-dimensional higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs). We concentrate on two cases: (i) bulk-corner correspondence, (ii) edge-corner correspondence. For the bulk-corner correspondence case, we demonstrate the existence of the mobility gaps and clarify the related topological invariant that characterizes the mobility gap. Furthermore, we find that, while the system preserves the bulk-corner correspondence in the presence of disorder, the corner states are protected by the mobility gap instead of the bulk ga…
The existence of topologically protected edge modes is often cited as a highly desirable trait of topological insulators. However, these edge states are not always present. A realistic physical treatment of long range hopping in a one-dimensional dipolar system can break the symmetry that protects the edge modes without affecting the bulk topological number, leading to a breakdown in bulk-edge correspondence. It is important to find a better understanding of where and how this occurs, as well as how to measure it. Here we examine the behaviour of the bulk and edge modes in a dimerised chain of…
Topological edge modes are excitations that are localized at the materials' edges and yet are characterized by a topological invariant defined in the bulk. Such bulk-edge correspondence has enabled the creation of robust electronic, electromagnetic and mechanical transport properties across a wide range of systems, from cold atoms to metamaterials, active matter and geophysical flows. Recently, the advent of non-Hermitian topological systems---wherein energy is not conserved---has sparked considerable theoretical advances. In particular, novel topological phases that can only exist in non-Herm…
We theoretically investigate electrical transport in a quantum Hall system hosting bulk and edge current carrying states. Spatially varying magnetic and electric confinement creates pairs of current carrying lines that drift in the same or opposite directions depending on whether confinement is applied by a magnetic split gate or a magnetic strip gate. We study the electronic structure through calculations of the local density of states and conductivity of the channel as a function of the chirality and wave-function overlap of these states. We demonstrate a shift of the conductivity peaks to h…
Vortices in chiral topological superconductors are known for trapping Majorana zero modes as a signature response to their bulk-state topologies. In this work, we establish a similar bulk-vortex correspondence for two-dimensional $C_n$-protected class D higher-order topological superconductors, in which a quantum vortex will universally trap a pair of $C_n$-protected Majorana bound states with $\hat{z}$-directional angular momenta $J_z=0$ and $J_z=n/2$, respectively. This intriguing one-to-one mapping between anomalous vortex modes and higher-order topology can be systematically derived throug…
We explore the bulk-edge correspondence for topological insulators (superconductors) without time-reversal symmetry from the point of view of the index theorem for open spaces. We assume generic Hamiltonians not only with a linear dispersion but also with higher order derivatives arising from generic band structures. Using a generalized index theorem valid for such systems, we show the equivalence between the spectral flow of the edge states and the Chern numbers specifying the bulk systems.
Bulk-boundary correspondence, a central principle in topological matter relating bulk topological invariants to edge states, breaks down in a generic class of non-Hermitian systems that have so far eluded experimental effort. Here we theoretically predict and experimentally observe non-Hermitian bulk-boundary correspondence, a fundamental generalization of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence, in discrete-time non-unitary quantum-walk dynamics of single photons. We experimentally demonstrate photon localizations near boundaries even in the absence of topological edge states, thus conf…
A non-Hermitian Chern insulator with gain/loss-type non-Hermiticity shows a peculiar gap closing; when a nontrivial Chern insulator phase changes to a gapless phase, conduction and valence bands are combined into one band owing to destabilization of chiral edge states. A previous recipe of non-Hermitian bulk-boundary correspondence is insufficient for this system since such a gap closing is beyond its scope. Here, we revise the recipe by taking the peculiar gap closing into account and apply it to the non-Hermitian Chern insulator. We demonstrate that the bulk-boundary correspondence holds in …
We present a detailed microscopic study of edge excitations for n filled Landau levels. We show that the higher-level wavefunctions possess a non-trivial radial dependence that should be integrated over for properly defining the edge conformal field theory. This analysis let us clarify the role of the electron orbital spin s in the edge theory and to discuss its universality, thus providing a further instance of the bulk-boundary correspondence. We find that the values s_i for each level, i=1,...,n, parameterize a Casimir effect or chemical potential shift that could be experimentally observed…
We give a bulk-hinge correspondence for higher-order topological phases protected by rotoinversion $C_{4}\mathcal{I}$ symmetry in magnetic systems. Our approach allows us to show the emergence of the chiral hinge modes only from the information of the $C_{4}\mathcal{I}$ eigenvalues at the high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone. In addition, based on the bulk-hinge correspondence, we propose a class of higher-order Weyl semimetals (HOWSMs) being Weyl semimetals with hinge modes and Fermi-arc surface states. The HOWSM is characterized by topological invariants for three-dimensional higher-or…
Periodically driven systems with internal and spatial symmetries can exhibit a variety of anomalous boundary behaviors at both the zero and $π$ quasienergies despite the trivial bulk Floquet bands. These phenomena are called anomalous Floquet topology (AFT) as they are unconnected from their static counterpart, arising from the winding of the time evolution unitary rather than the bulk Floquet bands at the end of the driving period. In this paper, we systematically derive the first and inversion-symmetric second-order AFT bulk-boundary correspondence for Altland-Zirnbauer (AZ) classes BDI, D, …
Bulk-boundary correspondence, connecting the bulk topology and the edge states, is an essential principle of the topological phases. However, the bulk-boundary correspondence is broken down in general non-Hermitian systems. In this paper, we construct one-dimensional non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with periodic driving that exhibits non-Hermitian skin effect: all the eigenstates are localized at the boundary of the systems, whether the bulk states or the zero and the $π$ modes. To capture the topological properties, the non-Bloch winding numbers are defined by the non-Bloch periodize…
A modified periodic boundary condition adequate for non-hermitian topological systems is proposed. Under this boundary condition a topological number characterizing the system is defined in the same way as in the corresponding hermitian system and hence, at the cost of introducing an additional parameter that characterizes the non-hermitian skin effect, the idea of bulk-edge correspondence in the hermitian limit can be applied almost as it is. We develop this framework through the analysis of a non-hermitian SSH model with chiral symmetry, and prove the bulk-edge correspondence in a generalize…
In this paper, we review our non-Bloch band theory in one-dimensional non-Hermitian tight-binding systems. In our theory, it is shown that in non-Hermitian systems, the Brillouin zone is determined so as to reproduce continuum energy bands in a large open chain. By using simple models, we explain the concept of the non-Bloch band theory and the method to calculate the Brillouin zone. In particular, for the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, the bulk-edge correspondence can be established between the topological invariant defined from our theory and existence of the topological edge stat…
We present an analytic prescription for computing the edge dispersion E(k) of a tight-binding Dirac Hamiltonian terminated at an abrupt crystalline edge. Specifically, we consider translationally invariant Dirac Hamiltonians with nearest-layer interaction. We present and prove a geometric formula that relates the existence of surface states as well as their energy dispersion to properties of the bulk Hamiltonian. We further prove the bulk-boundary correspondence between the Chern number and the chiral edge modes for quantum Hall systems within the class of Hamiltonians studied in the paper. Ou…
For two dimensional Schroedinger Hamiltonians we formulate boundary conditions that split the Hilbert space according to the chirality of the eigenstates on the boundary. With magnetic fields, and in particular, for Quantum Hall Systems, this splitting corresponds to edge and bulk states. Applications to the integer and fractional Hall effect and some open problems are described.
The bulk-boundary correspondence in one dimension asserts that the physical quantities defined in the bulk and at the edge are connected, as well established in the argument for electric polarization. Recently, a spectral bulk-boundary correspondence (SBBC), an extended version of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence to energy-dependent spectral functions, such as Green's functions, has been proposed in chiral symmetric systems, in which the chiral operator anticommutes with the Hamiltonian. In this study, we extend the SBBC to a system with impurity scattering and dynamical self-ener…
We discuss the relation between bulk topological invariants and the spectrum of surface states in three dimensional non-interacting topological insulators. By studying particular models, and considering general boundary conditions for the electron wavefunction on the crystal surface, we demonstrate that using experimental techniques that probe surface states, only strong topological and trivial insulating phases can be distinguished; the latter state being equivalent to a weak topological insulator. In a strong topological insulator, only the {\it parity} of the number of surface states, but n…
The conventional bulk-boundary correspondence breaks down in non-Hermitian systems. In this paper, we reestablish the bulk-boundary correspondence in one-dimensional non-Hermitian systems by applying the scattering theory, which is a systematical way in various symmetry classes. Based on the scattering theory, it is discovered that the topological invariant can be obtained by solving a generalized eigenproblem without calculating the generalized Brillouin zone. As a direct consequence, we unveil a new type of topological phase transition without typical bulk enengy gap closing and an unstable …
We study a topological physics in a one-dimensional nonlinear system by taking an instance of a mechanical rotator model with alternating spring constants. This nonlinear model is smoothly connected to an acoustic model described by the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model in the linear limit. We numerically show that quench dynamics of the kinetic and potential energies for the nonlinear model is well understood in terms of the topological and trivial phases defined in the associated linearized model. It indicates phenomenologically the emergence of the edge state in the topological phase even for the …
String-theoretic T-duality can be exploited to simplify some features of the bulk-boundary correspondence in condensed matter theory. This paper surveys how T-duality links position and momentum space pictures of that correspondence.
The chiral hinge modes are the key feature of a second order topological insulator in three dimensions. Here we propose a quadrupole index in combination of a slab Chern number in the bulk to characterize the flowing pattern of chiral hinge modes along the hinges at the intersection of the surfaces of a sample. We further utilize the topological field theory to demonstrate the correspondent connection of the chiral hinge modes to the quadrupole index and the slab Chern number, and present a picture of three-dimensional quantum anomalous Hall effect as a consequence of chiral hinge modes. The t…
We present examples in three symmetry classes of topological insulators in one or two dimensions where the proof of the bulk-edge correspondence is particularly simple. This serves to illustrate the mechanism behind the bulk-edge principle without the overhead of the more general proofs which are available. We also give a new formula for the \mathbb{Z}_{2}-index of our time-reversal invariant systems inspired by Moore and Balents.
Recently we introduced T-duality in the study of topological insulators. In this paper, we study the bulk-boundary correspondence for three phenomena in condensed matter physics, namely, the quantum Hall effect, the Chern insulator, and time reversal invariant topological insulators. In all of these cases, we show that T-duality trivializes the bulk-boundary correspondence.
We address the breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence observed in non-Hermitian systems, where open and periodic systems can have distinct phase diagrams. The correspondence can be completely restored by considering the Hamiltonian's singular value decomposition instead of its eigendecomposition. This leads to a natural topological description in terms of a flattened singular decomposition. This description is equivalent to the usual approach for Hermitian systems and coincides with a recent proposal for the classification of non-Hermitian systems. We generalize the notion of the entang…
The bulk-edge correspondence characterizes topological insulators and superconductors. We generalize this concept to the bulk-corner correspondence and the edge-corner correspondence in two dimensions. In the bulk-corner (edge-corner) correspondence, the topological number is defined for the bulk (edge), while the topological phase is evidenced by the emergence of zero-energy corner states. It is shown that the boundary-obstructed topological phases recently proposed are the edge-corner-correspondence type, while the higher-order topological phases are classified into the bulk-corner-correspon…
The topology of insulators is usually revealed through the presence of gapless boundary modes: this is the so-called bulk-boundary correspondence. However, the many-body wavefunction of a crystalline insulator is endowed with additional topological properties that do not yield surface spectral features, but manifest themselves as (fractional) quantized electronic charges localized at the crystal boundaries. Here, we formulate such bulk-corner correspondence for the physical relevant case of materials with time-reversal symmetry and spin-orbit coupling. To so do we develop "partial" real-space …
We show that a slab of a three-dimensional inversion-symmetric higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) in class A is a 2D Chern insulator, and that in class AII is a 2D $Z_2$ topological insulator. We prove it by considering a process of cutting the three-dimensional inversion-symmetric HOTI along a plane, and study the spectral flow in the cutting process. We show that the $Z_4$ indicators, which characterize three-dimensional inversion-symmetric HOTIs in classes A and AII, are directly related to the $Z_2$ indicators for the corresponding two-dimensional slabs with inversion symmetry, i.e.…
The generalized Brillouin zone (GBZ), which is the core concept of the non-Bloch band theory to rebuild the bulk boundary correspondence in the non-Hermitian topology, appears as a closed loop generally. In this work, we find that even if the GBZ itself collapses into a point, the recovery of the open boundary energy spectrum by the continuum bands remains unchanged. Contrastively, if the bizarreness of the GBZ occurs, the winding number will become illness. Namely, we find that the bulk boundary correspondence can still be established whereas the GBZ has singularities from the perspective of …
Non-Hermitian systems exhibit striking exceptions from the paradigmatic bulk-boundary correspondence, including the failure of bulk Bloch band invariants in predicting boundary states and the (dis)appearance of boundary states at parameter values far from those corresponding to gap closings in periodic systems without boundaries. Here, we provide a comprehensive framework to unravel this disparity based on the notion of biorthogonal quantum mechanics: While the properties of the left and right eigenstates corresponding to boundary modes are individually decoupled from the bulk physics in non-H…
We demonstrate that the presence of a localized state at the corner of an insulating domain is not always a predictor of a certain non-trivial higher-order topological invariant, even though they appear to co-exist in the same Hamiltonian parameter space. Our analysis of $C^n$-symmetric crystalline insulators and their multi-layer stacks reveals that topological corner states are not necessarily correlated with other well-established higher-order boundary observables, such as fractional corner charge or filling anomaly. In a $C^3$-symmetric breathing Kagome lattice, for example, we show that t…
The breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence in non-Hermitian (NH) topological systems is an open, controversial issue. In this paper, to resolve this issue, we ask the following question: Can a (global) topological invariant completely describe the topological properties of a NH system as its Hermitian counterpart? Our answer is no. One cannot use a global topological invariant (including non-Bloch topological invariant) to accurately characterize the topological properties of the NH systems. Instead, there exist a new type of topological invariants that are absence in its Hermitian coun…
Recently we introduced T-duality in the study of topological insulators, and used it to show that T-duality trivialises the bulk-boundary correspondence in 2 dimensions. In this paper, we partially generalise these results to higher dimensions and briefly discuss the 4D quantum Hall effect.
Bulk boundary correspondence is crucial to topological insulator as it associates the boundary states (with zero energy, chiral or helical) to topological numbers defined in bulk. The application of this correspondence needs a prerequisite condition which is usually not mentioned explicitly: the boundaries themselves cannot alter the bulk states, so as to the topological numbers defined on them. In non-hermitian models with fractional winding number, we prove that such precondition fails and the bulk boundary correspondence is cut out. We show that, as eliminating the hopping between the bound…
The bulk-boundary correspondence establishes a connection between the bulk topological index of an insulator or superconductor, and the number of topologically protected edge bands or states. For topological superconductors in two dimensions the first Chern number is related to the number of protected bands within the bulk energy gap, and is therefore assumed to give the number of Majorana band states in the system. Here we show that this is not necessarily the case. As an example we consider a hexagonal-lattice topological superconductor based on a model of graphene with Rashba spin orbit cou…
