We investigate novel features of three dimensional non-Hermitian Weyl semimetals, paying special attention to its unconventional bulk-boundary correspondence. We use the non-Bloch Chern numbers as the tool to obtain the topological phase diagram, which is also confirmed by the energy spectra from our numerical results. It is shown that, in sharp contrast to Hermitian systems, the conventional (Bloch) bulk-boundary correspondence breaks down in non-Hermitian topological semimetals, which is caused by the non-Hermitian skin effect. We establish the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence for non-Hermitian Weyl semimetals: the Fermi-arc edge modes are determined by the non-Bloch Chern number of the bulk bands. Moreover, these Fermi-arc edge modes can manifest as the unidirectional edge motion, and their signatures are consistent with the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence. Our work establish the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence for non-Hermitian topological semimetals.
We study the propagation of an oscillatory electromagnetic field inside a Weyl semimetal. In conventional conductors, the motion of the charge carriers in the skin layer near the surface can be diffusive, ballistic, or hydrodynamic. We show that the presence of chiral anomalies, intrinsic to the massless Weyl particles, leads to a hitherto neglected nonlocal regime that can separate the normal and viscous skin effects. We propose to use this novel regime as a diagnostic of the presence of chiral anomalies in optical conductivity measurements. These results are obtained from a generalized kinet…
In conventional Hermitian systems with the open boundary condition, Bloch's theorem is perturbatively broken down, which means although the crystal momentum is not a good quantum number, the eigenstates are the superposition of several extended Bloch waves. In this paper, we show that Bloch's theorem can be non-perturbatively broken down in some Hermitian Bosonic systems. The quasiparticles of the system are the superposition of localized non-Bloch waves, which are characterized by the complex momentum whose imaginary part determines the localization properties. Our work is a Hermitian general…
It is generally believed that non-Hermiticity can transform Weyl semimetals into Weyl-exceptional-ring semimetals. However, this belief is from the systems without skin effect. We investigate the non-Hermitian Weyl semimental and its Floquet engineering in a system with skin effect, which breaks the bulk-boundary correspondence in its Hermitian counterpart. It is found in both the static and periodically driven cases that the skin effect makes this general belief no longer valid. We discover that exotic non-Hermitian topological matters, e.g., a composite phase of Weyl semimetal and topologica…
We predict a linear logarithmical scaling law of Bloch oscillation dynamics in Weyl semimetals (WSMs), which can be applied to detect Weyl nodal points. Applying the semiclassical dynamics for quasiparticles which are accelerated bypassing a Weyl point, we show that transverse drift exhibits asymptotically a linear log-log relation with respect to the minimal momentum measured from the Weyl point. This linear scaling behavior is a consequence of the monopole structure nearby the Weyl points, thus providing a direct measurement of the topological nodal points, with the chirality and anisotropy …
In recent research, it has been shown that non-Hermitian systems exhibit sensitivity to boundaries, and it is caused by the non-Hermitian skin effect. In this work, we construct the non-Bloch band theory in bosonic Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) systems. From our theory, we can calculate the generalized Brillouin zone and the energy spectrum in such systems with open boundary conditions in the thermodynamic limit, and we can thus discuss its non-Hermitian nature, despite Hermiticity of an original Hamiltonian. In fact, we find that the bosonic Kitaev-Majorana chain exhibits rich aspects of the no…
We construct a two-dimensional, discrete-time quantum walk exhibiting non-Hermitian skin effects under open-boundary conditions. As a confirmation of the non-Hermitian bulk-boundary correspondence, we show that the emergence of topological edge states are consistent with Floquet winding numbers calculated using a non-Bloch band theory invoking time-dependent generalized Billouin zones. Further, the non-Bloch topological invariants associated with quasienergy bands are captured by a non-Hermitian local Chern marker in real space, defined through local biorthogonal eigen wave functions of the no…

The current response to an electromagnetic field in a Weyl or Dirac semimetal becomes nonlocal due to the chiral anomaly activated by an applied static magnetic field. The nonlocality develops under the conditions of the normal skin effect and is related to the valley charge imbalance generated by the joint effect of the electric field of the impinging wave and the static magnetic field. We elucidate the signatures of this nonlocality in the transmission of electromagnetic waves. The signatures include enhancement of the transmission amplitude and its specific dependence on the wave's frequenc…
Non-Hermitian skin effect and critical skin effect are unique features of non-Hermitian systems. In this Letter, we study an open system with its dynamics of single-particle correlation function effectively dominated by a non-Hermitian damping matrix, which exhibits $\mathbb{Z}_2$ skin effect, and uncover the existence of a novel phenomenon of helical damping. When adding perturbations that break anomalous time reversal symmetry to the system, the critical skin effect occurs, which causes the disappearance of the helical damping in the thermodynamic limit although it can exist in small size sy…
Skin effect, where macroscopically many bulk states are aggregated towards the system boundary, is one of the most important and distinguishing phenomena in non-Hermitian quantum systems. We discuss a new aspect of this effect whereby, despite its topological origin, applying magnetic field can largely suppress it. Skin states are pushed back into the bulk and the skin topological area, which we define, is sharply reduced. As seen from exact solutions of representative models this is fundamentally rooted in the fact that the applied magnetic field restores the validity of the low-energy descri…
In this Book Chapter (invited) we briefly review the basic concepts defining topological insulators and focus on elaborating on the key experimental results that revealed and established their symmetry protected (SPT) topological nature. We then present key experimental results that demonstrate magnetism, Kondo insulation, mirror chirality or topological crystalline order and superconductivity in spin-orbit topological insulator settings and how these new (bulk insulating) phases of matter arise through topological quantum phase transitions from Bloch band insulators via topological or Dirac s…
Skin effect, experimentally discovered in one dimension, describes the physical phenomenon that on an open chain, an extensive number of eigenstates of a non-Hermitian hamiltonian are localized at the end(s) of the chain. Here in two and higher dimensions, we establish a theorem that the skin effect exists, if and only if periodic-boundary spectrum of the hamiltonian covers a finite area on the complex plane. This theorem establishes the universality of the effect, because the above condition is satisfied in almost every generic non-Hermitian hamiltonian, and, unlike in one dimension, is compa…
We study the quench dynamics of non-Hermitian topological models with non-Hermitian skin effects. Adopting the non-Bloch band theory and projecting quench dynamics onto the generalized Brillouin zone, we find that emergent topological structures, in the form of dynamic skyrmions, exist in the generalized momentum-time domain, and are correlated with the non-Bloch topological invariants of the static Hamiltonians. The skyrmion structures anchor on the fixed points of dynamics whose existence are conditional on the coincidence of generalized Brillouin zones of the pre- and post-quench Hamiltonia…
Recently, topological quantum states of non-Hermitian systems, exhibiting rich new exotic states, have attracted great attention in condensed-matter physics. As for the demonstration, most of non-Hermitian topological phenomena previously focused on are in one- and two-dimensional systems. Here, we investigate three-dimensional non-Hermitian nodal-line semimetals in the presence of a particle gain-and-loss perturbation. It is found that this perturbation will split the original nodal ring into two exceptional rings (ERs). The topological nature of the bulk electronic structure is characterized…
We explore absorbing open-boundary modes in non-Hermitian photonic systems. The modes have a continuum spectrum in the infinite system-size limit and can exhibit the non-Hermitian skin effect. In contrast to the conventional non-Hermitian skin modes under the fixed-end open-boundary condition, the modes concerned exhibit a strongly size-dependent spectrum that gradually converges to the non-Bloch-band dispersion. The modes correspond to the poles of the $S$ matrix, and are closely related to the lasing. We demonstrate these properties in a two-dimensional non-Hermitian photonic crystal with ga…
The physics of massless relativistic quantum particles has recently arisen in the electronic properties of solids following the discovery of graphene. Around the accidental crossing of two energy bands, the electronic excitations are described by a Weyl equation initially derived for ultra-relativistic particles. Similar three and four band semimetals have recently been discovered in two and three dimensions. Among the remarkable features of graphene are the characterization of the band crossings by a topological Berry winding, leading to an anomalous quantum Hall effect, and a finite minimal …
The non-Hermitian skin effect can arise in materials that have asymmetric hoppings between atoms or resonating units, which makes the bulk eigenspectrum sensitive to boundary conditions. When skin effect emerges, eigenstates in the bulk continuum can become localized on the edges, making the distinction between edge and bulk states challenging. We establish the bulk-boundary correspondence for a Chern insulator model with non-Hermitian skin effect by combining two approaches ("non-Bloch" approach and "biorthogonal" approach). Both approaches can suppress the skin effect but they are based on d…
We theoretically study the effect of the Berry curvature on the transport properties of Weyl semimetals in the nonadiabatic process, which results in nonlinear optical responses. In the adiabatic process, the Berry curvature, which involves the time derivative of the Bloch states, contributes to the transport properties such as the adiabatic Thouless pump. Although this effect is very weak in usual solids, it is enhanced in Weyl semimetals, where the Berry curvature contributes to observable nonlinear optical responses due to its nodal structure. In this paper, using semiclassical Boltzmann th…
Bulk-boundary correspondence, connecting the bulk topology and the edge states, is an essential principle of the topological phases. However, the bulk-boundary correspondence is broken down in general non-Hermitian systems. In this paper, we construct one-dimensional non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with periodic driving that exhibits non-Hermitian skin effect: all the eigenstates are localized at the boundary of the systems, whether the bulk states or the zero and the $π$ modes. To capture the topological properties, the non-Bloch winding numbers are defined by the non-Bloch periodize…
Recently, many novel and exotic phases have been proposed by considering the role of topology in non-Hermitian systems, and their emergent properties are of wide current interest. In this work we propose the non-Hermitian generalization of semi-Dirac semimetals, which feature a linear dispersion along one momentum direction and a quadratic one along the other. We study the topological phase transitions in such two-dimensional semi-Dirac semimetals in the presence of a particle gain-and-loss term. We show that such a non-Hermitian term creates exceptional points originating out of each semi-Dir…
In the presence of non-Hermitian skin effect, non-Hermitian lattices generally have complex-valued eigenenergies under periodic boundary condition, but they can have non-Bloch PT symmetry and therefore completely real eigenenergies under open boundary condition. This novel PT symmetry and its breaking have been experimentally observed in one dimension. Here, we find that non-Bloch PT symmetry in two and higher dimensions exhibits drastically different behaviors compared to its one-dimensional counterpart. Whereas Bloch PT breaking and one-dimensional non-Bloch PT breaking generally have nonzer…
While the Bloch spectrum of translationally invariant noninteracting lattice models is trivially obtained by a Fourier transformation, diagonalizing the same problem in the presence of open boundary conditions is typically only possible numerically or in idealized limits. Here we present exact analytic solutions for the boundary states in a number of lattice models of current interest, including nodal-line semimetals on a hyperhoneycomb lattice, spin-orbit coupled graphene, and three-dimensional topological insulators on a diamond lattice, for which no previous exact finite-size solutions are …
A hallmark of topological band theory in periodic media is that bulk properties are not affected by boundary conditions. Remarkably, in certain non-Hermitian lattices the bulk properties are largely affected by boundaries, leading to such major effects as the non-Hermitian skin effect and violation of the bulk-boundary correspondence. Here we unveil that non-unitary discrete-time quantum walks of photons in systems involving gain and loss show rather generally non-Bloch parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry breaking phase transitions, and suggest a bulk probing method to detect such boundary-d…
Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians are generally sensitive to boundary conditions, and their spectra and wave functions under open boundary conditions are not necessarily predicted by the Bloch band theory for periodic boundary conditions. To elucidate such a non-Bloch feature, recent works have developed a non-Bloch band theory that works even under arbitrary boundary conditions. Here, it is demonstrated that the standard non-Bloch band theory breaks down in the symplectic class, in which non-Hermitian Hamiltonians exhibit Kramers degeneracy because of reciprocity. Instead, a modified non-Bloch band …
We explore the topological properties of double-Weyl semimetals with cold atoms in optical lattices. We first propose to realize a tight-binding model of simulating the double-Weyl semimetal with a pair of double-Weyl points by engineering the atomic hopping in a three-dimensional optical lattice. We show that the double-Weyl points with topological charges of \$pm2$ behave as sink and source of Berry flux in momentum space connecting by two Fermi arcs and they are stabilized by the \$C_{4h}$ point-group symmetry. By applying a realizable \$C_4$ breaking term, we find that each double-Weyl poi…

The non-Hermitian skin effect is a unique feature of non-Hermitian systems, in which an extensive number of boundary modes appear under the open boundary conditions. Here, we discover higher-order counterparts of the non-Hermitian skin effect that exhibit new boundary physics. In two-dimensional systems with the system size $L \times L$, while the conventional (first-order) skin effect accompanies $O\,( L^{2} )$ skin modes, the second-order skin effect accompanies $O\,( L )$ corner skin modes. This also contrasts with Hermitian second-order topological insulators, in which only $O\,( 1 )$ corn…
Finding fingerprints of disordered Weyl semimetals (WSMs) is an unsolved task. Here we report such findings in the level statistics and the fractal nature of electron wavefunction around Weyl nodes of disordered WSMs. The nearest-neighbor level spacing follows a new universal distribution $P_c(s)=C_1 s^2\exp[-C_2 s^{2-γ_0}]$ originally proposed for the level statistics of critical states in the integer quantum Hall systems or normal dirty metals (diffusive metals) at metal-to-insulator transitions, instead of the Wigner-Dyson distribution for diffusive metals. Numerically, we find $γ_0=0.62\pm…
In this article we study 3D non-Hermitian higher-order Dirac semimetals (NHHODSMs). Our focus is on $C_4$-symmetric non-Hermitian systems where we investigate inversion ($\mathcal{I}$) or time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$) symmetric models of NHHODSMs having real bulk spectra. We show that they exhibit the striking property that the bulk and surfaces are anti-PT and PT symmetric, respectively, and so belong to two different topological classes realizing a novel non-Hermitian topological phase which we call a \emph{hybrid-PT topological phases}. Interestingly, while the bulk spectrum is still fully …
One of the core concepts from the non-Hermitian skin effect is the extended complex wavevectors (CW) in the generalized Brillouin zone (GBZ), while the origin of CW remains elusive, and further experimental demonstration of GBZ is still lacking. We show that the bulk states of an open quantum system dynamically governed by the Lindblad master equation exhibit non-Bloch evolution which results in CW. Experimentally, we present temporal topolectrical circuits to serve as simulators for the dynamics of an open system. By reconstructing the correspondence between the bulk states of an open system …
Electronic transport in Weyl semimetals is quite extraordinary due to the topological property of the chiral anomaly generating the charge pumping between two distant Weyl nodes with opposite chiralities under parallel electric and magnetic fields. Here, we develop a full nonequilibrium quantum transport theory of the chiral anomaly, based on the fact that the chiral charge pumping is essentially nothing but the Bloch oscillation. Specifically, by using the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function method, it is shown that there is a rich structure in the chiral anomaly transport, including the ne…
Using first-principles calculations, we investigate the photogalvanic effect in the Weyl semimetal material TaAs. We find colossal photocurrents caused by the Weyl points in the band structuure in a wide range of laser frequency. Our calculations reveal that the photocurrent is predominantly contributed by the three-band transition from the occupied Weyl band to the empty Weyl band via an intermediate band away from the Weyl cone, for excitations both by linearly and circularly polarized lights. Therefore, it is significant to sum over all three-band transitions by considering a full set of Bl…
Topological semimetals have been at the forefront of experimental and theoretical attention in condensed matter physics. Among these, recently discovered Weyl semimetals have a dispersion described by a three-dimensional Dirac cone, which is at the root of exotic physics such as the chiral anomaly in magnetotransport. In a time reversal symmetric (TRS) Weyl semimetal film, the confinement gap gives the quasiparticles a mass, while TRS is preserved by having an even number of valleys with opposite masses. The film can be tuned through a topological phase transition by a gate electric field. In …
