Recently, many novel and exotic phases have been proposed by considering the role of topology in non-Hermitian systems, and their emergent properties are of wide current interest. In this work we propose the non-Hermitian generalization of semi-Dirac semimetals, which feature a linear dispersion along one momentum direction and a quadratic one along the other. We study the topological phase transitions in such two-dimensional semi-Dirac semimetals in the presence of a particle gain-and-loss term. We show that such a non-Hermitian term creates exceptional points originating out of each semi-Dirac point. We map out the topological phase diagram of our model, using winding number and vorticity as topological invariants of the system. By means of numerical and analytical calculations, we examine the nature of edge states for different types of semi-Dirac models and establish bulk-boundary correspondence and absence of the non-Hermitian skin effect, in one class. On the other hand, for other classes of semi-Dirac models with asymmetric hopping, we restore the non-Hermitian skin effect, an anomalous feature usually present in non-Hermitian topological systems.
Non-Hermitian systems, which contain gain or loss, commonly host exceptional point degeneracies rather than the diabolic points found in Hermitian systems. We present a class of non-Hermitian lattice models with symmetry-stabilized diabolic points, such as Dirac or Weyl points. They exhibit non-Hermiticity-induced phenomena previously existing in the Hermitian regime, including topological phase transitions, Landau levels induced by pseudo-magnetic fields, and Fermi arc surface states. These behaviors are controllable via gain and loss, with promising applications in tunable active topological…
We show that Dirac fermion systems in two dimensions generally exhibit disorder-induced nodal arc replacing the nodal point and tilted Dirac cone, provided that the two components of the Dirac fermion correspond to two distinct orbitals unrelated by symmetry. This result is explicitly demonstrated using renormalization group analysis in a disordered Dirac model that we introduce, where the disorder potential acts differently on the two orbitals. As we show by numerical simulations and self-consistent Born approximation calculation, this drives the system into a new strongly disordered phase.
We investigate disorder effects on Landau levels in Dirac electron systems with the use of a non-Hermitian quasiparticle Hamiltonian formalism. This formalism reveals that spin-dependent scattering rates induce the spectrum collapse of Landau levels, i.e., the disappearance of the energy gaps between n-th and -n-th levels under a finite external magnetic field. The spectrum collapse occurs in both weak and strong magnetic field regimes, thus showing a reentrant behavior. Particularly, in the strong magnetic field regime, in contrast to naive expectation, the increase of a magnetic field stabil…
Recently, there has been a lot of activity in the research field of topological non-Hermitian physics, partly driven by fundamental interests and partly driven by applications in photonics. However, despite these activities, a general classification and characterization of non-Hermitian Dirac models that describe the experimental systems is missing. Here, we present a systematic investigation of massive Dirac models on periodic lattices, perturbed by general non-Hermitian terms. We find that there are three different types of non-Hermitian terms. For each case we determine the bulk exceptional…
We perform a comparative study for the magnetization dynamics within linear response theory of one and two dimensional massive Dirac electrons, after switching on either a real (hermitian) or an imaginary (non-hermitian) magnetic field. While hermitian dc magnetic fields polarize the spins in the direction of the external magnetic field, non-hermitian magnetic fields induce only off diagonal response. An imaginary dc magnetic field perpendicular to the mass term induces finite magnetization in the third direction only according to the right hand rule. This can be understood by analyzing the no…
Parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry plays an important role both in non-Hermitian and topological systems. In non-Hermitian systems $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry can lead to an entirely real energy spectrum, while in topological systems $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry gives rise to stable and protected Dirac points. Here, we study a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system which is both non-Hermitian and topological, namely a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Dirac semimetal with non-Hermitian perturbations in three dimensions. We find that, in general, there are only two types of symmetry allowed non-Hermitian perturbatio…
Breaking Hermiticity in topological systems gives rise to intriguing phenomena, such as the exceptional topology and the non-Hermitian skin effect. In this work, we study a non-Hermitian topological crystalline insulator sitting on the Kekulé-modulated honeycomb lattice with balanced gain and loss. We find that the gaplessness of the topological edge states in the non-Hermitian system is insensitive to edge geometries under moderate strength of gain and loss, unlike the cases of Hermitian topological crystalline insulators that depend on edge geometries crucially. We focus on two types of gain…
We identify and investigate two classes of non-Hermitian systems, i.e., one resulting from Lorentz-symmetry violation (LSV) and the other from a complex mass (CM) with Lorentz invariance, from the perspective of quantum field theory. The mechanisms to break, and approaches to restore, the bulk-boundary correspondence in these two types of non-Hermitian systems are clarified. The non-Hermitian system with LSV shows a non-Hermitian skin effect, and its topological phase can be characterized by mapping it to the Hermitian system via a non-compact $U(1)$ gauge transformation. In contrast, there ex…
Non-Hermitian skin-edge states emerge only at one edge in one-dimensional nonreciprocal chains, where all states are localized at the edge irrespective of eigenvalues. The bulk topological number is the winding number associated with the complex energy spectrum, which is well defined for metals. We study non-Hermitian nonreciprocal systems in higher dimensions, and propose to realize them with the use of electric diode circuits. We first investigate one-dimensional interface states between two domains carrying different topological numbers, where all states are localized at the interface. They…
Topological physics relies on the existence of Hamiltonian's eigenstate singularities carrying a topological charge, such as quantum vortices, Dirac points, Weyl points and -- in non-Hermitian systems -- exceptional points (EPs), lines or surfaces. They appear only in pairs connected by a Fermi arc and are related to a Hermitian singularity, such as a Dirac point. The annihilation of 2D Dirac points carrying opposite charges has been experimentally reported. It remained elusive for Weyl points and second order EPs terminating different Fermi arcs. Here, we observe the annihilation of second or…
We show that topological phases of the Dirac system in arbitral even dimensional space are simulated by $LC$ electric circuits with operational amplifiers. The lattice Hamiltonian for the hypercubic lattice in $2n$ dimensional space is characterized by the $n$-th Chern number. The boundary state is described by the Weyl theory in $2n-1$ dimensional space. They are well observed by measuring the admittance spectrum. They are different from the disentangled $n$-th Chern insulators previously reported, where the $n$-th Chern number is a product of the first Chern numbers. The results are extended…
In this article we study 3D non-Hermitian higher-order Dirac semimetals (NHHODSMs). Our focus is on $C_4$-symmetric non-Hermitian systems where we investigate inversion ($\mathcal{I}$) or time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$) symmetric models of NHHODSMs having real bulk spectra. We show that they exhibit the striking property that the bulk and surfaces are anti-PT and PT symmetric, respectively, and so belong to two different topological classes realizing a novel non-Hermitian topological phase which we call a \emph{hybrid-PT topological phases}. Interestingly, while the bulk spectrum is still fully …

Quasiparticle states in Dirac systems with complex impurity potentials are investigated. It is shown that an impurity site with loss leads to a nontrivial distribution of the local density of states (LDOS). While the real part of defect potential induces a well-pronounced peak in the density of states (DOS), the DOS is either weakly enhanced at small frequencies or even forms a peak at the zero frequency for a lattice in the case of non-Hermitian impurity. As for the spatial distribution of the LDOS, it is enhanced in the vicinity of impurity but shows a dip at a defect itself when the potenti…
Absence of level repulsion between extended states in random non-Hermitian systems is demonstrated. As a result, the general Wigner-Dyson distributions of level spacing of diffusive metals in the usual Hermitian systems is replaced by the Poisson distribution for quasiparticle level spacing of non-Hermitian disordered metals in the thermodynamic limit of infinite system size. This is a very surprising result because Poisson statistics is universally true for the Anderson insulators where energy eigenstates do not overlap with each other so that energy levels are independent from each other. For…
We propose a pair of the complex Berry curvatures associated with the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and its Hermitian adjoint to reveal new physics in non-Hermitian systems. We give the complex Berry curvature and Berry phase for the two-dimensional non-Hermitian Dirac model. The imaginary part of the complex Berry phase induces the quantum Hall susceptance such that the quantum Hall conductance is generalized to quantum Hall admittance for non-Hermitian systems, which implies that the non-Hermiticity of systems could induce an intrinsic quantum capacitance or inductance of systems depending on th…
We report on the occurrence of knotted metallic band structures as stable topological phases in non-Hermitian (NH) systems. These knotted NH metals are characterized by open Fermi surfaces, known in mathematics as Seifert surfaces, that are bounded by knotted lines of exceptional points. Quite remarkably, and in contrast to the situation in Hermitian systems, no fine tuning or symmetries are required in order to stabilize these exotic phases of matter. By explicit construction, we derive microscopic tight-binding models hosting knotted NH metals with strictly short-ranged hopping, and investig…
We investigate the Hall conductance of a two-dimensional Chern insulator coupled to an environment causing gain and loss. Introducing a biorthogonal linear response theory, we show that sufficiently strong gain and loss lead to a characteristic non-analytical contribution to the Hall conductance. Near its onset, this contribution exhibits a universal power-law with a power 3/2 as a function of Dirac mass, chemical potential and gain strength. Our results pave the way for the study of non-Hermitian topology in electronic transport experiments.
We theoretically investigate the emergence of non-hermitian physics at the heterojunction of a type-II Dirac semi-metal (DSM) and a dirty superconductor (DSC). The non-hermiticity is introduced in the DSM through the self-energy term incorporated via the dirtiness of the superconducting material. This causes the spectra of the effective Hamiltonian to become complex, which gives rise to the appearance of the exceptional points (EPs). This complex self energy, apart from having a frequency dependence, also acquires spatial dependence as well, which is unique and can provide interesting effects …
We study the dynamical behavior of a non-Hermitian moire superlattice system, which consists of two-coupled SSH chains with staggered imaginary on-site potentials. There are two main spatial regions, in which systems are in unbroken symmetric phases with fully real spectrum, appearing periodically along the ladder. We show that the two quantum phases are dimerized and tetramerized, which determine the distinct dynamical behaviors. Dirac probability can oscillate periodically, increase quadratically and increase exponentially, which correspond to the unbroken phase, exceptional point and the br…
We experimentally simulate in a photonic setting non-Hermitian (NH) metals characterized by the topological properties of their nodal band structures. Implementing nonunitary time evolution in reciprocal space followed by interferometric measurements, we probe the complex eigenenergies of the corresponding NH Bloch Hamiltonians, and study in detail the topology of their exceptional lines (ELs), the NH counterpart of nodal lines in Hermitian systems. We focus on two distinct types of NH metals: two-dimensional systems with symmetry-protected ELs, and three-dimensional systems possessing symmetr…
Spin-1 condensed matter systems characterized by the combination of a Dirac-like dispersion and flat bands are ideal for realizing high-temperature electronics and spintronic technologies in the absence of external magnetic field. In this study, we propose a three-band tight binding model, with spin-polarized Haldane-like next-nearest-neighbour tunnelling, on dice lattice and show that spin-1 Dirac half-metal, spin-1 Dirac spin-gapless semiconductor, and spin-polarized spin-1 massive Dirac dispersion with nontrivial topology can exist in two-dimensional ferromagnetic condensed matter systems w…
We propose and show that application of light leads to an intriguing platform for controlling exceptional points in non-Hermitian topological systems. We demonstrate our proposal using three different non-Hermitian systems -- nodal line semimetals, semi-Dirac semimetals and Dirac semimetals -- and show that using illumination with light one can engineer the positions and stability of exceptional points. We illustrate the topological properties of these models and map out their light-driven topological phase transitions.
We investigate the impact on basic quantum transport properties of disorder-induced exceptional points (EPs) that emerge in a disorder-averaged Green's function description of two-dimensional (2D) Dirac semimetals with spin- or orbital-dependent potential scattering. Remarkably, we find that EPs may promote the nearly vanishing conductance of a finite sample at the Dirac point to a sizable value that increases with disorder strength. This striking behavior exhibits a strong directional anisotropy that is closely related to the Fermi arcs connecting the EPs. We corroborate our results by numeri…
Non-Hermitian nodal knot metals (NKMs) contains intricate complex-valued energy bands gives rise to knotted exceptional loops and new topological surface states. We introduce a formalism that connects the algebraic, geometric, and topological aspects of these surface states with their parent knots, and provide an optimized constructive ansatz for tight-binding models for non-Hermitian NKMs of arbitrary knot complexity and minimal hybridization range. Specifically, various representative non-Hermitian torus knots Hamiltonians are constructed in real-space, and their nodal topologies studied via…
An idea is proposed for realizing a fully spin-polarized Dirac semimetal in frustrated itinerant magnets. We show that itinerant electrons on a triangular lattice exhibit the Dirac cone dispersion with half-metallic behavior in the presence of a three-sublattice ferrimagnetic order. The Dirac nodes have the same structure as those of graphene. By variational calculation and Monte Carlo simulation, we demonstrate that the ferrimagnetic order with the Dirac node spontaneously emerges in a simple Kondo lattice model with Ising anisotropy. The realization will be beneficial for spintronics as a ca…
In this work we study many-body 'steady states' that arise in the non-Hermitian generalisation of the non-interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model at a finite density of fermions. We find that the hitherto known phase diagrams for this system, derived from the single-particle gap closings, in fact correspond to distinct non-equilibrium phases, which either carry finite currents or are dynamical insulators where particles are entrapped. Each of these have distinct quasi-particle excitations and steady state correlations and entanglement properties. Looking at finite-sized systems, we further modu…
