We consider boundary value problems for quasilinear first-order one-dimensional hyperbolic systems in a strip. The boundary conditions are supposed to be of a smoothing type, in the sense that the $L^2$-generalized solutions to the initial-boundary value problems become eventually $C^2$-smooth for any initial $L^2$-data. We investigate small global classical solutions and obtain the existence and uniqueness result under the condition that the evolution family generated by the linearized problem has exponential dichotomy on R. We prove that the dichotomy survives under small perturbations in the leading coefficients of the hyperbolic system. Assuming that the coefficients of the hyperbolic system are almost periodic, we prove that the bounded solution is almost periodic also.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of completely linear degeneracy for quasilinear hyperbolic systems in several space variables, and then get an interesting property for multidimensional hyperbolic conservation laws. Some examples and applications are given at last.
We prove global existence for quasilinear wave equations outside of a wide class of obstacles. The obstacles may contain trapped hyperbolic rays as long as there is local exponential energy decay for the associated linear wave equation. Thus, we can handle all non-trapping obstacles. We are also able to handle non-diagonal systems satisfying the appropriate null condition.
The paper concerns boundary value problems for general nonautonomous first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems in a strip. We construct small global classical solutions, assuming that the right hand sides are small. In the case that all data of the quasilinear problem are almost periodic, we prove that the bounded solution is also almost periodic. For the nonhomogeneous version of a linearized problem, we provide stable dissipativity conditions ensuring a unique bounded continuous solution for any smooth right-hand sides. In the autonomous case, this solution is two times continuously differe…
We investigate the long-time behavior of solutions of quasilinear hyperbolic systems with transparent boundary conditions when small source terms are incorporated in the system. Even if the finite-time stability of the system is not preserved, it is shown here that an exponential convergence towards the steady state still holds with a decay rate which is proportional to the logarithm of the amplitude of the source term. The result is stated for a system with dynamical boundary conditions in order to deal with initial data that are free of any compatibility condition.
We consider a hyperbolic-parabolic model of vasculogenesis in the multidimensional case. For this system we show the global existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem, using suitable energy estimates. Since this model does not enter in the classical framework of dissipative problems, we analyze it combining the features of the hyperbolic and the parabolic parts. Moreover we study the asymptotic behavior of those solutions showing their decay rates by means of detailed analysis of the Green function for the linearized problem.
The paper studies the long time behavior of a system that describes the motion of a piece of elastic membrane driven by surface tension and inner air pressure. The system is a degenerate quasilinear hyperbolic one that involves the mean curvature, and also includes a damping term that models the dissipative nature of genuine physical systems. With the presence of damping, a small perturbation of the sphere converges exponentially in time to the sphere, and without the damping the evolution that is $\varepsilon$-close to the sphere has life span longer than $\varepsilon^{-1/6}$. Both results ar…
We consider quasilinear parabolic evolution equations in the situation where the set of equilibria forms a finite-dimensional C^1-manifold which is normally hyperbolic. The existence of foliations of the stable and unstable manifolds is shown assuming merely C^1-regularity of the underlying equation.
We investigate in this paper the existence of the leading profile of a WKB expansion for quasilinear initial boundary value problems with a highly oscillating forcing boundary term. The framework is weakly nonlinear, as the boundary term is of order O($ε$) where the frequencies are of order O(1/$ε$). We consider here multiple phases on the boundary, generating a countable infinite number of phases inside the domain, and we therefore use an almost periodic functional framework. The major difficulties of this work are the lack of symmetry in the leading profile equation and the occurrence of inf…
We construct and justify leading order weakly nonlinear geometric optics expansions for nonlinear hyperbolic initial value problems, including the compressible Euler equations. The technique of simultaneous Picard iteration is employed to show approximate solutions tend to the exact solutions in the small wavelength limit. Recent work [2] by Coulombel, Gues, and Williams studied the case of reflecting wave trains whose expansions involve only real phases. We treat generic boundary frequencies by incorporating into our expansions both real and nonreal phases. Nonreal phases introduce difficulti…
We consider the finite-time stabilization of homogeneous quasilinear hyperbolic systems with one side controls and with nonlinear boundary condition at the other side. We present time-independent feedbacks leading to the finite-time stabilization in any time larger than the optimal time for the null controllability of the linearized system if the initial condition is sufficiently small. One of the key technical points is to establish the local well-posedness of quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear, non-local boundary conditions.
We consider an initial-boundary-value problem for a thermoelastic Kirchhoff & Love plate, thermally insulated and simply supported on the boundary, incorporating rotational inertia and a quasilinear hypoelastic response, while the heat effects are modeled using the hyperbolic Maxwell-Cattaneo-Vernotte law giving rise to a 'second sound' effect. We study the local well-posedness of the resulting quasilinear mixed-order hyperbolic system in a suitable solution class of smooth functions mapping into Sobolev $H^{k}$-spaces. Exploiting the sole source of energy dissipation entering the system throu…
In this paper, we study the boundary feedback stabilization of a quasilinear hyperbolic system with partially dissipative structure. Thanks to this structure, we construct a suitable Lyapunov function which leads to the exponential stability to the equilibrium of the $H^2$ solution. As an application, we also obtain the feedback stabilization for the Saint-Venant-Exner model under physical boundary conditions.
In this work, we present results on stability and hyperbolicity of equilibria for a scalar nonlocal one-dimensional quasilinear parabolic problem. We show that this nonlocal version of the well-known Chafee-Infante equation bares some resemblance with the local version. However, its nonlocal characteristc requires a fine analysis of the spectrum of the associated linear operators, a lot more ellaborated than the local case. The saddle point property of equilibria is shown to hold for this quasilinear model.
Hyperbolic systems in one dimensional space are frequently used in modeling of many physical systems. In our recent works, we introduced time independent feedbacks leading to the finite stabilization for the optimal time of homogeneous linear and quasilinear hyperbolic systems. In this work, we present Lyapunov's functions for these feedbacks and use estimates for Lyapunov's functions to rediscover the finite stabilization results.
In this paper well-posedness is proved for an initial and boundary value problem (IBVP) relative to a large class of quasilinear hyperbolic systems, in $p+q$ equations, on a strip, arising from a model of $H_2O$-phase transitions in the atmosphere. To obtain this result, first, we extensively study an IBVP for the generic linear transport equation on $S_{t_1 } = (0,t_1 ) \times G$ with uniformly locally Lipschitz data and associated vector field in $L_{x_d }^{-} (S_{t_1 } \times \mathbb{R}^p )$ (this cone of $L_t^\infty (0,t_1 ;L_{(x,y_{loc} )}^\infty (G \times \mathbb{R}^p ))^d $ is not coint…
We study quasilinear degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic stochastic partial differential equations with general multiplicative noise within the framework of kinetic solutions. Our results are twofold: First, we establish new regularity results based on averaging techniques. Second, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions in a full $L^1$ setting requiring no growth assumptions on the nonlinearities. In addition, we prove a comparison result and an $L^1$-contraction property for the solutions.
The general theory on exact boundary controllability for general first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems requires that the characteristic speeds of system do not vanish. This paper deals with exact boundary controllability, when this is not the case. Some important models are also shown as applications of the main result. The strategy uses the return method, which allows in certain situations to recover non zero characteristic speeds.
For the first order 1D $n\times n$ quasilinear strictly hyperbolic system $\partial_tu+F(u)\partial_xu=0$ with $u(x, 0)=\varepsilon u_0(x)$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is small, $u_0(x)\not\equiv 0$ and $u_0(x)\in C_0^2(\mathbb R)$, when at least one eigenvalue of $F(u)$ is genuinely nonlinear, it is well-known that on the finite blowup time $T_{\varepsilon}$, the derivatives $\partial_{t,x}u$ blow up while the solution $u$ keeps to be small. For the 1D scalar equation or $2\times 2$ strictly hyperbolic system (corresponding to $n=1, 2$), if the smooth solution $u$ blows up in finite time, then the…
We consider the coupling between the equations of motion of an inviscid compressible fluid in space with an objective Cattaneo-type extension for the heat flux. These equations are written in quasilinear form and we determine which of the given formulations for the heat flux allows for the hyperbolicity of the system. This feature is necessary for a physically acceptable sense of well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of such system of equations.
In this paper we establish the theory on semiglobal classical solution to first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with a kind of nonlocal boundary conditions, and based on this, the corresponding exact boundary controllability and observability are obtained by a constructive method. Moreover, with the linearized Saint-Venant system and the 1-D linear wave equation as examples, we show that the number of both boundary controls and boundary observations can not be reduced, and consequently, we conclude that the exact boundary controllability for a hyperbolic system in a network with loop can …
In this work, we consider the problem of boundary stabilization for a quasilinear 2X2 system of first-order hyperbolic PDEs. We design a new full-state feedback control law, with actuation on only one end of the domain, which achieves H^2 exponential stability of the closedloop system. Our proof uses a backstepping transformation to find new variables for which a strict Lyapunov function can be constructed. The kernels of the transformation are found to verify a Goursat-type 4X4 system of first-order hyperbolic PDEs, whose well-posedness is shown using the method of characteristics and success…
In this work we analyze the solutions of a $p$-Laplacian equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions set in a family of rough domains with a nonlinear term concentrated on the boundary. At the limit, we get a nonlinear boundary condition capturing the oscillatory geometry of the strip where the reactions take place.
We describe the point and contact equivalence groupoids of an important class of two-dimensional quasilinear hyperbolic equations. In particular, we prove that this class is normalized in the usual sense with respect to point transformations, and its contact equivalence groupoid is generated by the first-order prolongation of its point equivalence groupoid, the contact vertex group of the wave equation and a family of contact admissible transformations between trivially Darboux-integrable equations.
In this article, we study a one-dimensional nonlocal quasilinear problem of the form $u_t=a(\Vert u_x\Vert^2)u_{xx}+νf(u)$, with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the interval $[0,π]$, where $0<m\leq a(s)\leq M$ for all $s\in \mathbb{R}^+$ and $f$ satisfies suitable conditions. We give a complete characterization of the bifurcations and of the hyperbolicity of the corresponding equilibria. With respect to the bifurcations we extend the existing result when the function $a(\cdot)$ is non-decreasing to the case of general smooth nonlocal diffusion functions showing that bifurcations may be pitchf…
Semi-global solutions to the Goursat problem for second-order hyper-quasilinear hyperbolic systems with lineary dependent principal coefficients and applications to the vacuum Einstein equations
We consider the hyperbolic version of three-dimensional anisotropic Naver-Stokes equations in a thin strip and its hydrostatic limit that is a hyperbolic Prandtl type equations. We prove the global-in-time existence and uniqueness for the two systems and the hydrostatic limit when the initial data belong to the Gevrey function space with index 2. The proof is based on a direct energy method by observing the damping effect in the systems.
The Cauchy problem for a quasilinear system of hyperbolic-parabolic equations is addressed with the method of linearization and fixed point. Coupling between the hyperbolic and parabolic variables is allowed in the linearization and we do not assume the Friedrich's symmetrizability of the system. This coupling results in linear energy estimates that prevent the application of Banach's contraction principle. A metric fixed point theorem is developed in order to conclude the local existence and uniqueness of solutions. We show that the boundedness in the high norm and contraction in the low norm…
In this article we provide a local wellposedness theory for quasilinear Maxwell equations with absorbing boundary conditions in $\mathcal{H}^m$ for $m \geq 3$. The Maxwell equations are equipped with instantaneous nonlinear material laws leading to a quasilinear symmetric hyperbolic first order system. We consider both linear and nonlinear absorbing boundary conditions. We show existence and uniqueness of a local solution, provide a blow-up criterion in the Lipschitz norm, and prove the continuous dependence on the data. In the case of nonlinear boundary conditions we need a smallness assumpti…
In this paper, we discuss the Cauchy problem for a degenerate parabolic hyperbolic equation with a multiplicative noise. We focus on the existence of a solution. Using nondegenerate smooth approximations, Debussche, Hofmanová and Vovelle [8] proved the existence of a kinetic solution. On the other hand, we propose to construct a sequence of approximations by applying a time splitting method and prove that this converges strongly in $L^1$ to a kinetic solution. This method will somewhat give us not only a simpler and more direct argument but an improvement over the existence result.
In this article, we establish the existence of a family of hypersurfaces $(Γ(t))_{0< t \leq T}$ which evolve by the vanishing mean curvature flow in Minkowski space and which as $t$ tends to~$0$ blow up towards a hypersurface which behaves like the Simons cone at infinity. This issue amounts to investigate the singularity formation for a second order quasilinear wave equation. Our constructive approach consists in proving the existence of finite time blow up solutions of this hyperbolic equation under the form $u(t,x) \sim t^ {ν+1} Q\Big(\frac {x} {t^ {ν+1}} \Big) $, where~$Q$ is a stationary …
We consider the forced problem $-Δ_p u - V(x)|u|^{p-2} u = f(x)$, where $Δ_p$ is the $p$-Laplacian ($1<p<\infty$) in a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $V\ge 0$ and $Q_V (u) := \int_Ω|\nabla u|^p\, dx - \int_ΩV|u|^p\,dx$ satisfies the condition (A) stated at the beginning of the paper. We show that this problem has a solution for all $f$ in a suitable space of distributions. Then we apply this result to some classes of functions $V$ which in particular include the Hardy potential and the potential $V(x)=λ_{1,p}(Ω)$, where $λ_{1,p}(Ω)$ is the Poincaré constant on an infinite strip.
We show the continuity of the flow map for quasilinear symmetric hyperbolic systems with general right--hand sides in different functional setting, including weighted Sobolev spaces $H_{s,δ}$. An essential tool to achieve the continuity of the flow map is a low regularity energy estimate. We then apply these results to the Euler--Poisson system which describes various systems of physical interests.
The goal of this paper is to construct explicitly the global attractors of quasilinear parabolic equations, as it was done for the semilinear case by Brunovský and Fiedler (1986), and generalized by Fiedler and Rocha (1996). In particular, we construct heteroclinic connections between hyperbolic equilibria, stating necessary and sufficient conditions for heteroclinics to occur. Such conditions can be computed through a permutation of the equilibria. Lastly, an example is computed yielding the well known Chafee-Infante attractor.
We have solved completely the problem of the description of quasi-linear hyperbolic differential equations in two independent variables that are invariant under three-parameter Lie groups.
We consider a hyperbolic quasilinear fluid model, that arises from a delayed version for the constitutive law for the deformation tensor in the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. We prove the existence of global strong solutions for large data including decay rates in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and in the three dimensional special cases known from the classical Navier-Stokes equation. As a corollary we can derive from [Sch12] a global relaxation limit $τ\to 0$ uniform in time. Furthermore we give an improved version of the regularity criterion of [FO12].
We show convergence of solutions to equilibria for quasilinear parabolic evolution equations in situations where the set of equilibria is non-discrete, but forms a finite-dimensional $C^1$-manifold which is normally hyperbolic. Our results do not depend on the presence of an appropriate Lyapunov functional as in the Łojasiewicz-Simon approach, but are of local nature.
This work intends to prove that strong instabilities may appear for high order geometric optics expansions of weakly stable quasilinear hyperbolic boundary value problems, when the forcing boundary term is perturbed by a small amplitude oscillating function, with a transverse frequency. Since the boundary frequencies lie in the locus where the so-called Lopatinskii determinant is zero, the amplifications on the boundary give rise to a highly coupled system of equations for the profiles. A simplified model for this system is solved in an analytical framework using the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theore…
We give sufficient conditions for Input-to-State Stability in $C^{1}$ norm of general quasilinear hyperbolic systems with boundary input disturbances. In particular the derivation of explicit Input-to-State Stability conditions is discussed for the special case of $2\times 2$ systems.
Motivated by a new kind of initial boundary value problem (IBVP) with a free boundary arising in wave-structure interaction, we propose here a general approach to one-dimensional IBVP as well as transmission problems. For general strictly hyperbolic 2x2 quasilinear hyperbolic systems, we derive new sharp linear estimates with refined dependence on the source term and control on the traces of the solution at the boundary. These new estimates are used to obtain sharp results for quasilinear IBVP and transmission problems, and for fixed, moving, and free boundaries. In the latter case, two kinds …
We establish existence and uniqueness results for the singular initial value problem associated with a class of quasilinear, symmetric hyperbolic, partial differential equations of Fuchsian type in several space dimensions. This is an extension of earlier work by the authors for the same problem in one space dimension.
The goal of this paper is to construct explicitly the global attractors of parabolic equations with singular diffusion coefficients on the boundary, as it was done without the singular term for the semilinear case by Brunovsk'y and Fiedler (1986), generalized by Fiedler and Rocha (1996) and later for quasilinear equa- tions by the author (2017). In particular, we construct heteroclinic connections between hyperbolic equilibria, stating necessary and sufficient conditions for heteroclinics to occur. Such conditions can be computed through a permutation of the equilibria. Lastly, an example is c…
We consider the hyperbolic-parabolic singular perturbation problem for a nondegenerate quasilinear equation of Kirchhoff type with weak dissipation. This means that the dissipative term is multiplied by a coefficient b(t) which tends to 0 as t tends to +infinity. The case where b(t) behaves like (1+t)^{-p} with p<1 has recently been considered. The result is that the hyperbolic problem has a unique global solution, and the difference between solutions of the hyperbolic problem and the corresponding solutions of the parabolic problem converges to zero both as t tends to +infinity and as epsilon…
