In this contribution we assess the performance of two different exchange-correlation functionals in the first-principle prediction of the lattice thermal conductivity of bulk semiconductors, namely the local density approximation (LDA) and the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof implementation of the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Both functionals are shown to give results in good agreement with experimental measurements. Such a consistency between the two functionals may seem a bit surprising, as the LDA is known to overbind and the GGA to soften the interatomic bonds. Such features ought to greatly affect the value of the system interatomic force constants (IFCs) which are necessary for the first-principle prediction of the lattice thermal conductivity. In this study we show that the errors introduced by such approximations tend to cancel themselves. In the case of LDA, the overbinding generates larger absolute third-order IFCs, which tend to increase the three-phonon scattering rates. On the other hand, larger absolute second-order IFCs lead to a a larger acoustic-optical phonon band gap which in turns decrease the available phase space for three-phonon scattering, compensating the increase in the scattering rates due to stiffer IFCs.
Originating from a broken spatial inversion symmetry, ferroelectricity is a functionality of materials with an electric dipole that can be switched by external electric fields. Spontaneous polarization is a crucial ferroelectric property, and its amplitude is determined by the strength of polar structural distortions. Density functional theory (DFT) is one of the most widely used theoretical methods to study ferroelectric properties, yet it is limited by the levels of approximations in electron exchange-correlation. On the one hand, the local density approximation (LDA) is considered to be mor…
The thermal properties of bulk copper are investigated by performing ab initio DFT and DFPT calculations and using the quasiharmonic approximation for the free energy. Using both the LDA and the GGA for the exchange-correlation potential, we compute the temperature dependence of the lattice constant, coefficient of thermal expansion, bulk modulus, pressure derivative of the bulk modulus, phonon frequencies, Grueneisen parameters, and the electronic and phonon contributions to the specific heats at constant volume and constant pressure. We obtain answers in closer agreement with experiment than…
First-principles calculations within the weighted density approximation (WDA) were performed for ground state properties of ferroelectric perovskites PbTiO$_3$, BaTiO$_3$, SrTiO$_3$, KNbO$_3$ and KTaO$_3$. We used the plane-wave pseudopotential method, a pair distribution function $G$ based on the uniform electron gas, and shell partitioning. Comparing with the local density approximation (LDA) and the general gradient approximation (GGA), we found that the WDA significantly improves the equilibrium volume of these materials in cubic symmetry over both the LDA and GGA; Ferroelectric instabilit…
Main physical characteristics, crystal, magnetic and electronic structures, of cerium-based perovskites CeTmO3 [Tm3+ = Sc, Ti, V] are systematically investigated via the first-principles computations. Full-potential linear augmented plane-wave with the local density approximation and generalized gradient approximation, under Perdew-Burke-Ernzerh and Wu-Cohen, based on DFT. The optimized crystal parameters indicate that the crystal of compounds can categorized under cubic structure (space group Pm-3m, no. 221), and their obtained lattice constants in good agreement with the available experiment…
First principles calculations based on density functional theory, both with the local density approximation (LDA) and with generalised gradient corrections (GGA), and the projector augmented wave method, have been used to simulate solid and liquid MgO in direct coexistence in the range of pressure $0\le p \le 135$ GPa. The calculated LDA zero pressure melting temperature is $ T_m^{\rm LDA} = 3110 \pm 50 $ K, in good agreement with the experimental data. The calculated GGA zero pressure melting temperature $ T_m^{\rm GGA} = 2575 \pm 100 $ K is significantly lower than the LDA one, but the diffe…
In ab initio pseudopotential calculations within density-functional theory the nonlinear exchange-correlation interaction between valence and core electrons is often treated linearly through the pseudopotential. We discuss the accuracy and limitations of this approximation regarding a comparison of the local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximations (GGA), which we find to describe core-valence exchange-correlation markedly different. (1) Evaluating the binding properties of a number of typical solids we demonstrate that the pseudopotential approach and namely the lin…
We discuss self-consistently obtained ground-state electronic properties of monolayers of graphene and a number of beyond graphene compounds, including films of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), using the recently proposed strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) to the density functional theory. The SCAN meta-GGA results are compared with those based on the local density approximation (LDA) as well as the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). As expected, the GGA yields expanded lattices and softened bonds in relation t…
We compute electron-phonon coupling (EPC) of selected phonon modes in graphene and graphite using various ab-initio methods. The inclusion of non-local exchange-correlation effects within the GW approach strongly renormalizes the square EPC of the A$'_1$ {\bf K} mode by almost 80$%$ with respect to density functional theory in the LDA and GGA approximations. Within GW, the phonon slope of the A$'_1$ {\bf K} mode is almost two times larger than in GGA and LDA, in agreement with phonon dispersions from inelastic x-ray scattering and Raman spectroscopy. The hybrid B3LYP functional overestimates t…
We report on a significant failure of LDA and GGA to reproduce the phase stability and thermodynamics of mixed-valence Li$_x$FePO$_4$ compounds. Experimentally, Li$_x$FePO$_4$ compositions ($0 \leq x \leq 1$) are known to be unstable and phase separate into Li FePO$_4$ and FePO$_4$. However, first-principles calculations with LDA/GGA yield energetically favorable intermediate compounds an d hence no phase separation. This qualitative failure of LDA/GGA seems to have its origin in the LDA/GGA self-interaction which de localizes charge over the mixed-valence Fe ions, and is corrected by explicit…
A comparative study by FP-LAPW calculations based on DFT within LDA, PBE-GGA, EV$_{ex}$-PW$_{co}$-GGA, and EV$_{ex}$-GGA-LDA$_{co}$ schemes is introduced for the structural and electronic properties of ScN in RS, ZB, WZ, and CsCl phases. According to all approximations used in this work, the RS phase is the stable ground state structure and makes a transition to CsCl phase at high transition pressure. While PBE-GGA and EV$_{ex}$-PW$_{co}$-GGA's have provided better structural features such as equilibrium lattice constant and bulk modulus, only EV$_{ex}$-PW$_{co}$-GGA and EV$_{ex}$-GGA-LDA$_{co…
Experimental evidence both for and against a half-metallic ground-state of the Heusler compound Co2FeSi has been published. Density functional theory based calculations suggest a non half-metallic ground state. It has been argued, that on-site Coulomb interaction of the d electrons has to be taken into account via the LDA+U method, which predicts a half-metallic ground-state for U = 2.5...4.5 eV. X-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) can be used as a tool to assess the appropriateness of the LDA+U approach: the calculated spectra within the LDA+U or GGA+U schemes are different from those with…
We calculated the phonon dispersion relations of ZnX (X=Se, Te) employing ab initio techniques. These relations have been used to evaluate the temperature dependence of the respective specific heats of crystals with varied isotopic compositions. These results have been compared with mea- surements performed on crystals down to 2 K. The calculated and measured data are generally in excellent agreement with each other. Trends in the phonon dispersion relations and the correspond- ing densities of states for the zinc chalcogenide series of zincblende-type materials are discussed.
The thermal conductivities ($κ$) of bulk and thin-film $α$-Al$_2$O$_3$ are calculated from first principles using both the local density approximation (LDA), and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) to exchange and correlation. The room temperature single crystal LDA value $\sim39~$W/m$~$K agrees well with the experimental values $\sim35-39~$W/m$~$K, whereas the GGA values are much smaller $\sim$26$~$W/m$~$K. Throughout the temperature range, LDA is found to slightly overestimate $κ$ whereas GGA strongly underestimates it. We calculate the $κ$ of crystalline $α$-Al$\mathrm{_2}$O$\mathr…
The electronic structure and properties of PuO$_{2}$ and Pu$_{2}$O$_{3}$ have been studied from first principles by the all-electron projector-augmented-wave (PAW) method. The local density approximation (LDA)+$U$ and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA)+$U$ formalism have been used to account for the strong on-site Coulomb repulsion among the localized Pu $5f$ electrons. We discuss how the properties of PuO$_{2}$ and Pu$_{2}$O$_{3}$ are affected by the choice of $U$ as well as the choice of exchange-correlation potential. Also, oxidation reaction of Pu$_{2}$O$_{3}$, leading to formati…
We report calculations indicating the presence of a surface magnetic moment for Rh(001), motivated by the detection of a finite moment by magnetic linear dichroism experiments. We show that, while the density functional with the local density or generalized gradient approximations (LDA and GGA) for exchange and correlation yields a non-magnetic ground state, the application of the GGA plus on-site Coulomb interaction U method predicts surface magnetism, thus offering a solution to the long-standing discrepancy between experiment and theory. The calculated moment on the outermost Rh atom increa…
First-principles calculations within the Local Density Approximation (LDA) or Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA), though very successful, are known to underestimate redox potentials, such as those at which lithium intercalates in transition metal compounds. We argue that this inaccuracy is related to the lack of cancellation of electron self-interaction errors in LDA/GGA and can be improved by using the DFT+$U$ method with a self-consistent evaluation of the $U$ parameter. We show that, using this approach, the experimental lithium intercalation voltages of a number of transition metal c…
Unlike the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), calculations with meta-generalized gradient approximations (meta-GGA) are usually done according to the generalized Kohn-Sham (gKS) formalism. The exchange-correlation potential of the gKS equation is non-multiplicative, which prevents systematic comparison of meta-GGA bandstructures to those of the LDA and the GGA. We implement the optimized effective potential (OEP) of the meta-GGA for periodic systems, which allows us to carry out meta-GGA calculations in the same KS manner as for the LDA and the …
We have performed a systematic first-principles investigation to calculate the electronic structures, mechanical properties, and phonon dispersion curves of NpO$_{2}$. The local density approximation$+U$ and the generalized gradient approximation$+U$ formalisms have been used to account for the strong on-site Coulomb repulsion among the localized Np $5f$ electrons. By choosing the Hubbard \emph{U} parameter around 4 eV, the orbital occupancy characters of Np 5\emph{f} and O 2\emph{p} are in good agreement with recent experiments [J. Nucl. Mater. \textbf{389}, 470 (2009)]. Comparing with our pr…
Using density functional theory (DFT) with local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA) correlation functionals, the electronic and magnetic structures of cubic BaFeO$_{3}$ in the ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) states are studied. Our LDA/GGA and LDA$+U$/GGA$+U$ results show that cubic BFO has a FM ground state, in agreement with recent experimental works. Two types of Jahn-Teller (JT) distortions, denoted as JT1 and JT2, are considered. We find FM to ferrimagnetic (FIM) and FM to AFM magnetic phase transitionn in the JT1 and JT2 type of distor…
Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) is a widely-used electronic structure theory for materials as well as molecules. DFT is needed especially for large systems, ab initio molecular dynamics, and high-throughput searches for functional materials. DFT's accuracy and computational efficiency are limited by the approximation to its exchange-correlation energy. Currently, the local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximations (GGAs) dominate materials computation mainly due to their efficiency. We show here that the recently developed non-empirical strongly constrained …
CdIn2S4 thiospinel was studied by means of the first principles calculations in both generalized gradient and local density approximations (GGA and LDA). The structural, electronic, optical and elastic properties were calculated in the pressure range from 0 to 10 GPa, below the pressure of phase transition for this compound. One of the main results of the paper is that the previously encountered in the literature controversy regarding the character of the CdIn2S4 band gap was resolved in favor of the indirect gap. Pressure coefficient of the band gap estimated as 0.071/0.063 eV/GPa (GGA/LDA) i…
In this work, we employ the LDA, GGA and GGA with four vdW corrections to study crystal and electronic structures of bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with different twist angles. We find the GGA interlayer distance of bilayer MoS2 has good agreement with experimental value while vdW correction method still needs to be further improved. Our results indicate the GGA interlayer distances of bilayer XS2 (X= Mo, Cr) with twist angles are smaller than that of normal bilayer, which is the opposite in the LDA case. The GGA results show that reduced bandgap is due to the reduction of int…
We report on our investigation of the crystal structure of arsenic under compression, focusing primarily on the pressure-induced A7 to simple cubic (sc) phase transition. The two-atom rhombohedral unit cell is subjected to pressures ranging from 0 GPa to 200 GPa; for each given pressure, cell lengths and angles, as well as atomic positions, are allowed to vary until the fully relaxed structure is obtained. We find that the nearest and next-nearest neighbor distances give the clearest indication of the occurrence of a structural phase transition. Calculations are performed using the local densi…
Accurate low-order structure factors (Fg) measured by quantitative convergent beam electron diffraction (QCBED) were used for validation of different density functional theory (DFT) approximations. 23 low-order Fg were measured by QCBED for the transition metals Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu, and the transition metal based intermetallic phases γ-TiAl, β-NiAl and γ1-FePd using a multi-beam off-zone axis (MBOZA) method and then compared with Fg calculated ab-initio by DFT using the local spin density approximation (LDA) and LDA+U, and different generalized gradient approximations (GGA) functionals. Dif…
We perform systematic density functional theory (DFT) calculations to assess the performance of various exchange-correlation potentials $V_{xc}$ in describing the chalcogenide GaM$_4$Q$_8$ lacunar spinels (M=Mo, V, Nb, Ta; Q=S, Se). We examine the dependency of crystal structure (in cubic and rhombohedral symmetries), electronic structure, magnetism, optical conductivity, and lattice dynamics in lacunar spinels at four different levels of $V_{xc}$: the local density approximation (LDA), generalized gradient approximation (GGA), meta-GGA, and hybrid with fractional Fock exchange. We find that L…
In electronic structure calculations the optimized effective potential (OEP) is a method that treats exchange interactions exactly using a local potential within density-functional theory (DFT). We present a method using density functional perturbation theory combined with the Hylleraas variational method for finding the OEP by direct minimization which avoids any sum over unoccupied states. The method has been implemented within the plane-wave, pseudopotential formalism. Band structures for zinc blende semiconductors Si, Ge C, GaAs, CdTe and ZnSe, wurtzite semiconductors InN, GaN and ZnO and …
We report total energy calculations for different crystal structures of NaNbO$_3$ over a range of unit cell volumes using the all-electron full-potential (L)APW method. We employed both the local-density approximation (LDA) and the Wu-Cohen form of the generalized gradient approximation (GGA-WC) to test the accuracy of these functionals for the description of the complex structural behavior of NaNbO$_3$. We found that LDA not only underestimates the equilibrium volume of the system but also predicts an incorrect ground state for this oxide. The GGA-WC functional, on the other hand, significant…
Range separated hybrid density functionals are very successful in describing a wide range of molecular and solid state properties accurately. Range separated hybrid functionals are designed from spherically averaged or system averaged reversed engineered exchange hole. In the present attempt, we employ screened range separated hybrid functional scheme to the meta-GGA rung by using Tao-Mo semilocal exchange hole (or functional). The hybrid functional proposed here utilizes the spherically averaged density matrix expansion based exchange hole in range separation scheme. For slowly varying densit…
We show that a naive treatment of open-shell systems in hybrid density functional calculations ignoring the spin dependence causes significant errors due to a kind of self interaction that is not emerged in spin-dependent calculations. As numerical examples, we compare the results of the LDA, GGA, and PBE0 calculations on the ionization potential and electron affinity of C$_{60}$ molecule and the GGA and HSE calculations on the singly charged monovacancy in crystalline Si.
By investigating the crystalline structure of ground-state orthorhombic SrRuO$_3$, we present a benchmark study of some of the most popular density functional theory (DFT) approaches from the local density approximation (LDA), generalized-gradient approximation (GGA), and hybrid functional families. Recent experimental success in stabilizing tetragonal and monoclinic phases of SrRuO$_3$ at room temperature sheds a new light on the ability to accurately describe geometry of this material by applying first-principles calculations. Therefore, our work is aimed to analyse the performance of differ…
Adsorption of the molecule CO on metallic surfaces is an important unsolved problem in Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT). We present a detailed study of carbon monoxide adsorption on fcc (111) surfaces of 3d, 4d and 5d metals using nonempirical semilocal density functionals for the exchange-correlation energy: the local-density approximation (LDA), two generalized gradient approximations or GGAs (PBE and PBEsol), and a meta-GGA (SCAN). The typical error pattern (as found earlier for free molecules and for free transition metal surfaces), in which results improve from LDA to PBE or P…
The structural, electronic, mechanical, optical, thermodynamic properties of plutonium monoxide monohydride (PuOH) are studied by density-functional calculations within the framework of LDA/GGA and LDA/GGA+U.From the total energy calculation, the lowest-energy crystal structure of PuOH is predicted to have space group F-43m (No. 216). Within the LDA+U framework, the calculated lattice parameter of F-43m-PuOH is in good agreement with the experimental value and the corresponding ground state is predicted to be an antiferromagnetic charge-transfer insulator. Furthermore, we investigate the bondi…
The electronic and optical parameters of γ-Al2O3 and θ-Al2O3 have been studied by using the first principle within the framework of density function theory (DFT). The computational approach is based on full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method (FP-LAPW) within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), local density approximation (LDA), and modified Becke-Johnson potential (mBJ). The results show that these compounds have a direct gap (Γ-Γ) of about 5.375 eV and 4.716 eV for γ-Al2O3 and θ-Al2O3, respectively. Several optical parameters of these materials are also investigated. T…
We show that Mn_2VAl is a compound for which the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) to the exchange-correlation functional in density functional theory makes a qualitative change in predicted behavior compared to the usual local density approximation (LDA). Application of GGA leads to prediction of Mn_2VAl being a half-metallic ferrimagnet, with the minority channel being the conducting one. The electronic and magnetic structure is analyzed and contrasted with the isostructural enhanced semimetal Fe_2VAl.
We have computed the surface energies, work functions, and interlayer surface relaxations of clean (111), (110), and (100) surfaces of Al, Cu, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Pt, and Au. Many of these metallic surfaces have technological or catalytic applications. We compare experimental reference values to those of the local density approximation (LDA), the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) generalized gradient approximation (GGA), the PBEsol (PBE for solids) GGA, the SCAN meta-GGA, and SCAN+rVV10 (SCAN with a long-range van der Waals or vdW correction). The closest agreement with uncertain experimental values is…
We present a systematic study of the electronic structure of several prototypical correlated transition-metal oxides: VO2, V2O3, Ti2O3, LaTiO3, and YTiO3. In all these materials, in the low-temperature insulating phases the local and semilocal density approximations (LDA and GGA) of density-functional theory yield a metallic Kohn-Sham band structure. Here we show that, without invoking strong-correlation effects, the role of non-local exchange is essential to cure the LDA/GGA delocalization error and provide a band-structure description of the electronic properties in qualitative agreement wit…

Institute of Physics, Nicolaus Copernicus University(尼古拉·哥白尼大学物理研究所);Department of Physics and Astronomy, Uppsala University(乌普萨拉大学物理与天文学系);Center for Theoretical Physics of Complex Systems, Institute for Basic Science (IBS)(韩国基础科学研究院复杂系统理论物理中心)
We report density functional theory (DFT) band structure calculations on the transparent conducting oxides CuAlO2, CuGaO2, CuInO2 and CuCrO2. The use of the hybrid functional sX-LDA leads to considerably improved electronic properties compared to standard local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA) approaches. We show that the resulting electronic band gaps compare well with experimental values and previous quasiparticle calculations and show the correct trends with respect to the atomic number of the cation (Al, Ga, In). The resulting energetic depths of Cu …
We report first-principles frozen-phonon calculations for the determination of the force-free geometry and the dynamical matrix of the five Raman-active A1g modes in YBa2Cu3O7. To establish the shape of the phonon potentials atomic forces are calculated within the LAPW method. Two different schemes - the local density approximation (LDA) and a generalized gradient approximation (GGA) - are employed for the treatment of electronic exchange and correlation effects. We find that in the case of LDA the resulting phonon frequencies show a deviation from experimental values of approximately -10%. In…
The electronic properties of bulk fcc americium and the (111) surface have been investigated with the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method as implemented in the WIEN2K suite of programs. The study is carried out for the anti-ferromagnetic ground state of Am at different levels of theory: (1) scalar-relativity vs. full-relativity; (2) local-density approximation (LDA) vs. generalized-gradient approximation (GGA). Our results indicate that spin orbit coupling plays an important role in determining the electronic properties of both bulk fcc americium and the (111) surfa…
We investigate the behavior of three-dimensional (3D) exchange-correlation energy functional approximations of density functional theory in anisotropic systems with two-dimensional (2D) character. Using two simple models, quasi-2D electron gas and two-electron quantum dot, we show a {\it fundamental limitation} of the local density approximation (LDA), and its semi-local extensions, generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and meta-GGA (MGGA), the most widely used forms of which are worse than the LDA in the strong 2D limit. The origin of these shortcomings is in the inability of the local (LD…
Despite of its huge successes in vast amount of applications, the Kohn-Sham scheme of density functional theory (DFT-Kohn-Sham) has not been able to get reliable ionization potentials (IP) for semiconductors, due to self-interaction error in the local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximations (GGA), and the difficulty of using asymptotically long-ranged potentials for surface calculations. An approximate optimize effective potential (OEP), the Becke-Johnson'06 exchange, is used to explore the capability of OEP to calculate semiconductor IP with a surface technique sui…
Recently there has been a renewed interest in the calculation of exact-exchange and RPA correlation energies for realistic systems. These quantities are main ingredients of the so-called EXX/RPA+ scheme which has been shown to be a promising alternative approach to the standard LDA/GGA DFT for weakly bound systems where LDA and GGA perform poorly. In this paper, we present an efficient approach to compute the RPA correlation energy in the framework of the Adiabatic-Connection Fluctuation-Dissipation formalism. The method is based on the calculation of a relatively small number of eigenmodes of…
First principle calculations based on LDA/GGA approximation for the exchange functional underestimate the position of the semi core 3d levels in GaX (X = N, P and As) semiconductors. A self-interaction correction scheme within the LDA+U/GGA+U approximation is found to be sufficient to correct this discrepancy. A consequence of thiscorrection is that the bandgap (E_g) of the semiconductors also improves. The belief has been that the bandgap correction comes from modified semi core-valence interaction. We examine this often used approximation in great detail and find that although bandgap change…
Density functional theory within the local or semilocal density approximations (DFT-LDA/GGA) has become a workhorse in electronic structure theory of solids, being extremely fast and reliable for energetics and structural properties, yet remaining highly inaccurate for predicting band gaps of semiconductors and insulators. Accurate prediction of band gaps using firstprinciples methods is time consuming, requiring hybrid functionals, quasi-particle GW, or quantum Monte Carlo methods. Efficiently correcting DFT-LDA/GGA band gaps and unveiling the main chemical and structural factors involved in …
In this work using the density functional theory (DFT), we have studied the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of uranium dioxide with antiferromagnetic 1k-, 2k-, and 3k-order structures. Ordinary approximations in DFT, such as the local density approximation (LDA) or generalized gradient approximation (GGA), usually predict incorrect metallic behaviors for this strongly correlated electron system. Using Hubbard term correction for f-electrons, LDA+U method, as well as using the screened Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) hybrid functional for the exchange-correlation (XC), we have obta…
Specific forms of the exchange correlation energy functionals in first-principles density functional theory-based calculations, such as the local density approximation (LDA) and generalized-gradient approximations (GGA), give rise to structural lattice parameters with typical errors of -2% and 2%. Due to a strong coupling between structure and polarization, the order parameter of ferroelectric transitions, they result in large errors in estimation of temperature dependent ferroelectric structural transition properties. Here, we employ a recently developed GGA functional of Wu and Cohen [Phys. …
It is believed that the density functional theory (DFT) describes most elements with s, p and d orbitals very well, except some materials that having strongly localized and correlated valence electrons. In this work, we find that the widely employed exchange-correlation (xc) functionals, including LDA, GGA and meta-GGA, underestimate the shear modulus and phase stability of V and Nb greatly. The advanced hybrid functional that is usually better for correlated system, on the other hand, completely fails in these two simple metals. This striking failure is revealed due to the orbital localizatio…
We studied the effect of self-interaction error (SIE) on the static dipole polarizabilities of water clusters modelled with three increasingly sophisticated, non-empirical density functional approximations (DFAs), viz. the local spin density approximation (LDA), the Perdew-Burke-Ernzherof (PBE) generalized-gradient approximation (GGA), and the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA, using the Perdew-Zunger self-interaction-correction (PZ-SIC) energy functional in the Fermi-Löwdin orbital SIC (FLO-SIC) framework. Our results show that while all three DFAs overestimate the…
Crystalline structures, zone-center phonon modes, and the related dielectric response of the three low-pressure phases of HfO2 have been investigated in density-functional theory using ultrasoft pseudopotentials and a plane-wave basis. The structures of low-pressure HfO2 polymorphs are carefully studied with both the local-density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The fully relaxed structures obtained with either exchange-correlation scheme agree reasonably well with experiment, although LDA yields better overall agreement. After calculating the Born effecti…
A fully self-consistent density-functional theory (DFT) with improved functionals is used to provide a comprehensive account of structural, electronic, and optical properties of C$_{3}$N$_{4}$ polymorphs. Using our recently developed van Leeuwen-Baerends (vLB) corrected local-density approximation (LDA), we implemented LDA+vLB within full-potential N$^{th}$-order muffin-tin orbital (FP-NMTO) method and show that it improves structural properties and band gaps compared to semi-local functionals (LDA/GGA). We demonstrate that the LDA+vLB predicts band-structure and work-function for well-studied…
We extend the recently proposed thermally-assisted-occupation density functional theory (TAO-DFT) [J.-D. Chai, J. Chem. Phys. 136, 154104 (2012)] to generalized-gradient approximation (GGA) exchange-correlation density functionals. Relative to our previous TAO-LDA (i.e., the local density approximation to TAO-DFT), the resulting TAO-GGAs are significantly superior for a wide range of applications, such as thermochemistry, kinetics, and reaction energies. For noncovalent interactions, TAO-GGAs with empirical dispersion corrections are shown to yield excellent performance. Due to their computati…
We present results of GGA+U calculations for the "d^0 magnet" RbO_2, where magnetic properties are due to partially filled oxygen p orbitals. We show that on-site interactions on the oxygen sites lead to a strong tendency towards the formation of an orbitally polarized insulating state, in contrast to the half-metallic behavior predicted for this class of compounds within pure LDA/GGA. The obtained energy differences between different orbitally ordered configurations are sizeable, indicating an orbital ordering temperature higher than the antiferromagnetic Neel temperature of ~15 K. Our result…
For more than three decades, nearly free electron elemental metals have been a topic of debate because the computed bandwidths are significantly wider in the local density approximation to density-functional theory (DFT) than indicated by angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments. Here, we systematically investigate this using first-principles calculations for alkali and alkaline-earth metals using DFT and various beyond-DFT methods such as meta-GGA, G$_0$W$_0$, hybrid functionals (YS-PBE0, B3LYP), and LDA+eDMFT. We find that the static non-local exchange, as partly included in the hybr…
A systematic first-principle study is performed to calculate the lattice parameters, electronic structure, and thermodynamic properties of UN using the local-density approximation (LDA)+\emph{U} and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA)+\emph{U} formalisms. To properly describe the strong correlation in the U $5f$ electrons, we optimized the \emph{U} parameter in calculating the total energy, lattice parameters, and bulk modulus at the nonmagnetic (NM), ferromagnetic (FM), and antiferromagnetic (AFM) configurations. Our results show that by choosing the Hubbard \emph{U} around 2 eV with…
