Specific forms of the exchange correlation energy functionals in first-principles density functional theory-based calculations, such as the local density approximation (LDA) and generalized-gradient approximations (GGA), give rise to structural lattice parameters with typical errors of -2% and 2%. Due to a strong coupling between structure and polarization, the order parameter of ferroelectric transitions, they result in large errors in estimation of temperature dependent ferroelectric structural transition properties. Here, we employ a recently developed GGA functional of Wu and Cohen [Phys. Rev. B 73, 235116 (2006)] and determine total-energy surfaces for zone-center distortions of BaTiO3, PbTiO3, and SrTiO3, and compare them with the ones obtained with calculations based on standard LDA and GGA. Confirming that the Wu and Cohen functional allows better estimation of structural properties at 0 K, we determine a new set of parameters defining the effective Hamiltonian for ferroelectric transition in BaTiO3. Using the new set of parameters, we perform molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations under effective pressures p=0.0 GPa, p=-2.0 GPa, and p=-0.005T GPa. The simulations under p=-0.005T GPa, which is for simulating thermal expansion, show a clear improvement in the cubic to tetragonal transition temperature and c/a parameter of its ferroelectric tetragonal phase, while the description of transitions at lower temperatures to orthorhombic and rhombohedral phases is marginally improved. Our findings augur well for use of Wu-Cohen functional in studies of ferroelectrics at nano-scale, particularly in the form of epitaxial films where the properties depend crucially on the lattice mismatch.
To tune the magnetic properties of hexagonal ferrites, a family of magnetoelectric multiferroic materials, by atomic-scale structural engineering, we studied the effect of structural distortion on the magnetic ordering temperature (TN). Using the symmetry analysis, we show that unlike most antiferromagnetic rare-earth transition-metal perovskites, a larger structural distortion leads to a higher TN in hexagonal ferrites and manganites, because the K3 structural distortion induces the three-dimensional magnetic ordering, which is forbidden in the undistorted structure by symmetry. We also revea…
The local structural distortions in polydomain ferroelectric PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices are investigated by means of high spatial and energy resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy combined with high angle annular dark field imaging. Local structural variations across the interfaces have been identified with unit cell resolution through the analysis of the energy loss near edge structure of the Ti-L2,3 and O-K edges. Ab-initio and multiplet calculations of the Ti-L2,3 edges provide unambiguous evidence for an inhomogeneous polarization profile associated with the observed structural dist…
We observe significant effects of structural distortion on electronic and optical properties of CdGa_2X_4 (X = S, Se, Te) defect chalcopyrite. The calculation is carried out within Density functional theory based tight binding linear muffin tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method. Structural parameters and band gap of CdGa_2X_4 agree well with the available experimental values within LDA limit. Change in band gap due to structural distortion is 3.63%, 4.0%, and 8.8% respectively. We observe significant change in optical properties also due to this effect. Effects on optical properties come mainly from op…
X-ray photoelectron diffraction is used to directly probe the intra-cell polar atomic distortion and tetragonality associated with ferroelectricity in ultrathin epitaxial PbTiO3 films. Our measurements, combined with ab-initio calculations, unambiguously demonstrate non-centro-symmetry in films a few unit cells thick, imply that films as thin as 3 unit cells still preserve a ferroelectric polar distortion, and also show that there is no thick paraelectric dead layer at the surface.
The II-IV-N$_2$ class of heterovalent ternary nitrides have gained significant interest as alternatives to the III-nitrides for electronic and optoelectronic applications. In this study, we apply first-principles calculations based on density functional theory to systematically investigate the effects of structural distortions due to cation size mismatch on the configurational disorder of the cation sublattice and the valence band structure in this class of materials. We find that larger size mismatch between the group-II and the group-IV cations results in stronger lattice distortions from th…
Free electrons can screen out long-range Coulomb interaction and destroy the polar distortion in some ferroelectric materials, whereas the coexistence of polar distortion and metallicity were found in several non-central-symmetric metals (NCSMs). Therefore, the mechanisms and designing of NCSMs have attracted great interests. In this work, by first-principles calculation, we found the polar distortion in the lone-pair driven ferroelectric material PbTiO$_3$ can not only persist, but also increase with electron doping. We further analyzed the mechanisms of the persisting of the polar distortion…
It is shown that a k=0, A_{2u} distortion of the terbium tetrahedral network in Tb2Ti2O7 accounts for the apparent isolation of single tetrahedra as seen in neutron scattering studies. Single tetrahedron collective spin states, rather than individual spins, account for the main features of the spin liquid state, namely, fluctuating local moments and the absence of long range order. Singlet and doublet collective spin ground states are considered. An effective interaction between tetrahedra on the fcc lattice is derived and found to be weak and anisotropic.
We show that the observed transition from rocksalt to orthorhombic P$_{nma}$ symmetry in CrN can be understood in terms of stress anisotropy. Using local spin density functional theory, we find that the imbalance between stress stored in spin-paired and spin-unpaired Cr nearest neighbors causes the rocksalt structure to be unstable against distortions and justifies the observed antiferromagnetic ordering. This stress has a purely magnetic origin, and may be important in any system where the coupling between spin ordering and structure is strong.
Density functional calculations of electronic structure, total energy, structural distortions, and magnetism for hydrogenated single-layer, bilayer, and multi-layer graphene are performed. It is found that hydrogen-induced magnetism can survives only at very low concentrations of hydrogen (single-atom regime) whereas hydrogen pairs with optimized structure are usually nonmagnetic. Chemisorption energy as a function of hydrogen concentration is calculated, as well as energy barriers for hydrogen binding and release. The results confirm that graphene can be perspective material for hydrogen stor…
Ferroelectric materials are characterized by a spontaneous polar distortion. The behavior of such distortions in the presence of free charge is the key to the physics of metallized ferroelectrics in particular, and of structurally-polar metals more generally. Using first-principles simulations, here we show that a polar distortion resists metallization and the attendant suppression of long-range dipolar interactions in the vast majority of a sample of 11 representative ferroelectrics. We identify a meta-screening effect, occurring in the doped compounds as a consequence of the charge rearrange…
We report emergence of photoluminescence at room temperature in trigonal $Cs_3Bi_2Br_9$ at high pressures. Enhancement in intensity with pressure is found to be driven by increase in distortion of $BiBr_6$ octahedra and iso-structural transitions. Electronic band structure calculations show the sample in the high pressure phase to be an indirect band gap semiconductor. The luminescence peak profile show signatures related to the recombination of free and self trapped excitons, respectively. Blue shift of the both peaks till about 4.4 GPa are due to the exciton recombination before relaxation d…
A pronounced uniform polar distortion extending over several unit cells enables thin LaAlO3 overlayers on SrTiO3(001) to counteract the charge dipole and thereby neutralize the "polarization catastrophe" that is suggested by simple ion-counting. This unanticipated mechanism, obtained from density functional theory calculations, allows several unit cells of the LaAlO3 overlayer to remain insulating (hence, fully ionic). The band gap of the system, defined by occupied O $2p$ states at the surface and unoccupied Ti 3d states at the interface in some cases $\sim$20 Ådistant, decreases with increas…
In previous reports a structural transition from a cubic phase of Yb$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ - type to the superlattice variant has been reported at $\sim160$ K for a series of skutterudite-related Ce$_3$M$_4$Sn$_{13}$ compounds, where M=Co, Ru or Rh. We have simulated the low-temperature XRD diffraction patterns of the distorted unit cell using written for that purpose DISTorX program. The method proposed here for x-ray diffraction analysis obtains the XRD patterns from the atomic positions and allows to investigate crystal structure without imposed symmetry operations. We have indicated crystallo…
We report high $q$-resolution neutron scattering data on PMN-$x$PT single crystals with $x=20%$ and 27%. No rhombohedral distortion occurs in the 20PT sample for temperatures as low as 50 K. On the other hand, the 27PT sample transforms into a rhombohedral phase below T$_C \sim 375$ K. Our data provide conclusive evidence that a new phase with an average cubic lattice is present in the bulk of this relaxor system at low PT concentration, in which the ferroelectric polarization and lattice distortion are decoupled. The rhombohedral distortion is limited to the outermost tens of microns of the c…
To unravel the origin of the dielectric anomaly at the antiferromagnetic ordering of magnetoelectric Bi$_2$Fe$_4$O$_9$ we performed neutron powder diffraction measurements across the N$\acute{\rm e}$el temperature, $T_{\rm N}$. Both local structures and long-range symmetry are studied using the complementary analyses of atomic pair distribution function (PDF) and Rietveld methods at temperatures 300~K, 250~K, and 200~K. We present that PDF peaks which reflect local atomic arrangements exhibit a noticeable variation below $T_{\rm N}$ without long-range symmetry change. The implication of the PD…
We describe a general materials design approach that produces large orbital energy splittings (orbital polarization) in nickelate heterostructures, creating a two-dimensional single-band electronic surface at the Fermi energy. The resulting electronic structure mimics that of the high temperature cuprate superconductors. The two key ingredients are: (i) the construction of atomic-scale distortions about the Ni site via charge transfer and internal electric fields, and (ii) the use of three component (tri-component) superlattices to break inversion symmetry. We use {\it ab initio} calculations …
In this paper we attempt to understand the different nature of first order magnetic transformation in Mn$_3$SnC as compared to that in Mn$_3$GaC. The transformation in Mn$_3$SnC is close to room temperature (T$_t \approx$ 280K) and is associated with a large change in magnetic entropy that makes it a suitable candidate for applications in ferroic cooling. Using a combination of x-ray and neutron diffraction and x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy we infer that the magnetic ground state consisting of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic Mn atoms is due to structural distortions p…
A variety of experiments have been carried out to establish the origin of the chiral charge-density wave transition in 1T-TiSe$_2$, which in turn has led to contradictory conclusions on the origin of this transition. Some studies suggest the transition is a phonon-driven structural distortion while other studies suggest it is an excitonic insulator phase transition that is accompanied by a lattice distortion. First, we propose these interpretations can be reconciled if one analyzes the available experimental and theoretical data within a formal definition of what constitutes an excitonic insul…
We report the structural and electronic properties of chalcopyrite semiconductors CuInSe2, CuIn2 Se4 and Cu0.5Li0.5InSe2. Our calculation is based on Density functional Theory within tight binding linear muffin-tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method. The calculated lattice constants, anion displacement (u), tetragonal distortion (η = c/2a) and bond lengths agree well with experimental values. Our result shows these compounds are direct band gap semiconductors. Our calculated band gaps, 0.79eV and 1.08 eV of CuInSe2 and Cu0.5Li0.5InSe2 respectively agree well with the experimental values within the limit…
Temperature dependent synchrotron x-ray diffraction and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies were performed to understand the role of structural characteristics in driving the magnetoelectric mul- tiferoic properties of GdCrO3. The results suggest that the distortion in the structure appears to be associated with the off-center displacement of Gd-atoms together with octahedral rotations via displacement of the oxygen ions in GdCrO3. In addition, the magnetic coupling below magnetic transition temperature leads to additional distortion in the system via magnetostriction effe…
A structural phase transition from cubic $Fd\bar{3}m$ to tetragonal $I$4$_1$/$amd$ symmetry with $c/a >$ 1 is observed at $T_{\rm{S}}$ = 16 K in spinel GeCo$_2$O$_4$ below the Néel temperature $T_N$ = 21 K. Structural and magnetic ordering appear to be decoupled with the structural distortion occurring at 16 K while magnetic order occurs at 21 K as determined by magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. An elongation of CoO$_6$ octahedra is observed in the tetragonal phase of GeCo$_2$O$_4$. We present the complete crystallographic description of GeCo$_2$O$_4$ in the tetragonal $I…
Although ferroelectric compounds containing hydrogen bonds were among the first to be discovered, organic ferroelectrics are relatively rare. The discovery of high polarization at room temperature in croconic acid [Nature \textbf{463}, 789 (2010)] has led to a renewed interest in organic ferroelectrics. We present an ab-initio study of two ferroelectric organic molecular crystals, 1-cyclobutene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid (CBDC) and 2-phenylmalondialdehyde (PhMDA). By using a distortion-mode analysis we shed light on the microscopic mechanisms contributing to the polarization, which we find to be as…
We investigated the effect of on-site Coulomb interactions on the structural and magnetic ground state of the fullerene C$_{20}$ based on density-functional-theory calculations within the local density approximation plus on-site Coulomb corrections (LDA+$U$). The total energies of the high symmetry ($I_{h}$) and distorted ($D_{3d}$) structures of C$_{20}$ were calculated for different spin configurations. The ground state configurations were found to depend on the forms of exchange-correlation potentials and the on-site Coulomb interaction parameter $U$, reflecting the subtle nature of the com…
Since conduction electrons of a metal screen effectively the local electric dipole moments, it was widely believed that the ferroelectric-like distortion cannot occur in metals. Recently, metallic LiOsO3, was discovered to be the first clear-cut example of an Anderson-Blount "ferroelectric" metal, which at 140 K undergoes a ferroelectric-like structural transition similar to insulating LiNbO3. This is very surprising because the mechanisms for structural phase transitions are usually quite distinct in metals and insulators. Through performing first principles calculations, here we reveal that …
Two-dimensional election gases (2DEG), arising due to quantum confinement at interfaces between transparent conducting oxides, have received tremendous attention in view of electronic applications. The challenge is to find a material system that exhibits both a high charge-carrier density and mobility, at and even above room temperature. Here, we explore the potential of interfaces formed by two lattice-matched wide-gap oxides of emerging interest, $\textit{i.e.}$, the polar, orthorhombic perovskite LaInO$_{3}$ and the non-polar, cubic perovskite BaSnO$_{3}$, employing density-functional theor…
We have studied the correlation between the structural distortion and the electronic/magnetic properties in single-crystalline (Lu,Sc)Fe$_2$O$_4$ (Sc=0.05 and 0.3) by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetic susceptibility, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS)/x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD)measurements. The Rietveld structure analysis of the XRD patterns revealed that the Sc substitution induced an elongation of the FeO$_5$ bipyramidal cages in LuFe$_2$O$_4$ and increased the Fe$_2$O$_4$ bilayer thickness. A non-negligible decrease in the ferrimagnetic transition temperature T$_C$ …
Cathode materials undergo various phase transitions during the charge/discharge process, and the structural transitions significantly affect the battery performance. Although phonon properties can provide a direct clue for structural stability and transitions, it has been less explored in sodium cathode materials. Here, using the first-principles calculations, we investigate phonon and electronic properties of various layered NaMnO$_2$ materials, especially focusing on the dependency of the Jahn-Teller distortion of Mn$^{3+}$. The phonon dispersion curves show that the O$'$3 and P$'$2 structur…
The electronic structure of the neutral and singly charged Mg vacancy in MgO is investigated using density functional theory. For both defects, semilocal exchange correlation functionals such as the local spin density approximation incorrectly predict a delocalized degenerate ground state. In contrast functionals that take strong correlation effects into account predict a localized solution, in agreement with spin resonance experiments. Our results, obtained with the HSE hybrid, atomic self-interaction corrected and LDA+U functionals, provide a number of constraints to the possibility of ferro…
We have carried out ab-initio calculation and study of structural and electronic properties of AgAlM2 (M = S, Se, Te) chalcopyrite semiconductors using Density Functional Theory (DFT) based self consistent Tight binding Linear Muffin Tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method. Calculated equlibrium values of lattice constants, anion displacement parameter (u), tetragonal distortion (η = c/2a) and bond lengths have good agreement with experimental values. Our study suggests these semiconductors to be direct band gap semiconductors with band gaps 1.98 eV, 1.59 eV and 1.36 eV respectively. These are in good ag…
Ferroelectricity has been believed unable to coexist with metallicity since the free carriers can screen the internal coulomb interactions of dipoles. Very recently, one kind of materials called as ferroelectric metal was reexamined. Here, we report the coexistence of metallicity and polar distortion in a new candidate for ferroelectric metal PbTi1-xNbxO3 via doping engineering. The ferroelectric-like polar distortion in all the doped PbTi1-xNbxO3, with x ranging from 0.04 to 0.12, was confirmed by the piezoresponse force microscopy and the scanning transmission electron microscopy measurement…
We present a detailed $^7$Li- and $^{31}$P-NMR study on single crystalline LiMnPO$_4$ in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phase (AFM, $T_N \sim$ 34 K). This allows us to determine the spin directions in the field-induced spin-flop phase. In addition, the anisotropic dipolar hyperfine coupling tensor of the $^7$Li- and $^{31}$P-nuclei is also fully determined by orientation and temperature dependent NMR experiments and compared to the calculated values from crystal structure data. Deviations of the experimental values from the theoretical ones are discussed in terms of Mn disorder which i…
We studied in detail the structural relaxation and Jahn-Teller distortion in LaMnO3 (001) surface of the orthorhombic phase by means of classical atomistic simulation. It is found that MnO2-terminated surface is more energetically favorable than LaO-terminated surface by 0.34 eV. The standard deviation of Mn-O bond lengths of MnO6 octahedra and Jahn-Teller distortion oscillate in LaMnO3 (001) surface. Our simulated atomic displacements in the surface are compared with some ab initio studies.
We have investigated the ground state structures of neutral and charged XH$_{4}$(X=C, Si, Ge, Sn and Pb) molecules using the first-principles electronic structure methods. The structure of positively charged molecules for X = Si, Ge, Sn and Pb is characterized by a severe distortion from tetrahedral structure and an unusual H-H bond while the negatively charged molecules get distorted by pushing two hydrogen atoms away from each other. However, CH$_{4}$$^{+}$ and CH$_{4}$$^{-}$ are exceptions to this behavior. We provide an insight into the symmetry breaking mechanism and unusual H-H bonding u…
We report the pressure dependence of perovskite distortions in rare-earth (R) orthochromites (RCrO3) probed using Raman scattering in order to investigate the origin of structural transition from orthorhombic Pnma to rhombohedral R-3C phase in LaCrO3. The pressure induced changes in octahedral tilt modes demonstrates that tilt distortions are suppressed in LaCrO3 and are enhanced in the remaining members of RCrO3 family. This crossover between the two opposite pressure behaviors occurs at a critical R-ion radius of 1.20 Å. We attempted to establish the relation between this unusual crossover a…
Within the RCo$_2$ family of compounds, a structural distortion linked with the onset of magnetic ordering around the critical temperature can be observed. One of the less explored RCo$_2$ compounds is TmCo$_2$ probably due to its low Curie temperature. Exceptionally this compound, given its position at the end of the ferrimagnetic series, shows discrepancies in the ordering of the Co sub-lattice because of a weak Weiss molecular field. In this paper we focus on the structural distortion in TmCo$_2$, which appears together with the magnetic ordering around the critical temperature of $T_{C}\si…
The unprecedented structural flexibility and diversity of inorganic frameworks of layered hybrid halide perovskites (LHHPs) rise up a wide range of useful optoelectronic properties thus predetermining the extraordinary high interest to this family of materials. Nevertheless, the influence of different types of distortions of their inorganic framework on key physical properties such as band gap has not yet been quantitatively identified. We provided a systematic study of the relationships between LHHPs' band gaps and six main structural descriptors of inorganic framework, including interlayer d…
By means of high resolution neutron powder diffraction at low temperature we have characterized the structural details of $\rm La_{x}Sr_{2-x}FeMoO_6$ ($0\leq {\rm x}\leq 0.5$) and $\rm Ca_{x}Sr_{2-x}FeMoO_6$ ($0\leq {\rm x}\leq 0.6$) series of compounds. This study reveals a similar variation of the mean bond-angle \FeOMo in both series. In contrast, the mean bond-distance \FeMoO\ increases with La but not with Ca substitution. Both series also present a different evolution of the Curie temperature ($T_C$), which raises in the La series and slightly decreases in the Ca one. We thus conclude th…
We constructed, by the first-principles calculations, a magnetic phase diagram of Sr$_{2}$RuO$_4$ in the space spanned by structural distortions. Our phase diagram can qualitatively explain the experimental one for Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$. We found that the rotation and the tilting of RuO$_6$ octahedron are responsible for the ferro- and antiferro-magnetism, respectively, while the flattening of RuO$_6$ is the key factor to stabilize those magnetic ground states. Our results imply that the magnetic and the structural instabilities in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ are closely correlated cooperatively rather th…
We present a strategy for increasing thermoelectric performance by invoking ferroelectric distortion in a transition-metal oxide. By using an ab initio calculation approach with the Boltzmann transport equation, a large Seebeck coefficient is calculated in n-type BaTiO3. The polar structural distortion causes the peculiar dispersion of the lowest conduction band, which enhances the Seebeck coefficient along the polar direction. A microscopic mechanism of carrier concentration dependence of the Seebeck coefficient is discussed in terms of the band velocity distribution in the Brillouin zone.
Theoretical investigations of the electronic, magnetic and structural properties of LaTiO3 and YTiO3 have been made. In the framework of GGA and GGA+U scheme we analyzed the effect of the local Coulomb interaction (U) value on the atomic forces acting in the experimental structure. The optimal parameters of the electron-electron on-site interactions as well as the orbital configurations and magnetic properties are determined.
Materials with coupled or competing order parameters display highly tunable ground states, where subtle perturbations reveal distinct electronic and magnetic phases. These phases generally are underpinned by complex crystal structures, but the role of structural complexity in these phases often is unclear. We use group theoretic methods and first-principles calculations to analyze a set of coupled structural distortions that underlie the polar charge- and orbitally- ordered antiferromagnetic ground state of $A$-site ordered SmBaMn$_2$O$_6$. We show that these distortions play a key role in est…
The deviation of positions of atoms from their ideal lattice sites in crystalline solid state systems causes distortion and can lead to variation in structural [1] and functional properties [2]. Distortion in molecular systems has been traditionally understood in the term of Jahn-Teller distortion [3], while for the one-dimensional chain of metals, the Peierls distortion mechanism has been proposed [4]. In a real three dimensional metallic systems, a fundamental description of the distortion is missing, which we need to design alloys with attractive structural properties. The present investiga…
CrN is observed to undergo a paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition accompanied by a shear distortion from cubic NaCl-type to orthorhombic structure. Our first-principle plane wave and ultrasoft pseudopotential calculations confirm that the distorted antiferromagnetic phase with spin configuration arranged in double ferromagnetic sheets along [110] is the most stable. Antiferromagnetic ordering leads to a large depletion of states around Fermi level, but it does not open a gap. Simultaneous occurence of structural distortion and antiferromagnetic order is analyzed.
When insulator LaAlO3 is grown by epitaxy onto a TiO2-terminated {100} surface of insulator SrTiO3, the resulting system has a metallic character. This phenomenon has been associated with an electrostatic frustration at the interface, as {100} surfaces of SrTiO3 are neutral while those of LaAlO3 are polar, but its microscopic mechanism is not quite understood. Here, we present a structural characterisation of this interface by aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy. The unit cells at the interface appear elongated: we discuss this distortion in terms of electrostatic charge and …
This work reports the structural instability at T=0 K of the U2Mo compound in the structure C11b under the distortion related to the C66 elastic constant. The electronic properties of U2Mo such density of states (DOS), bands and Fermi surface (FS) are studied to understand the source of the instability. The C11b structure can be interpreted as formed by parallel linear chains along the z-directions each one composed by successive U-Mo-U blocks. The hybridization due to electronic interactions inside the U-Mo-U blocks is slightly modified under the D6 distortion. The change in distance among ch…
Na2IrO3 (NIO) is known to be a spin-orbit (SO) driven j=1/2 pseudo-spin Mott-Hubbard (M-H) insulator. However, the microscopic origin of the pseudo-spin state and the role of local structural distortions have not been clearly understood. Using a combination of theoretical calculations and x-ray spectroscopy, we show that the energetics in the vicinity of Fermi level (EF) is governed by SO interactions, electron correlation and local octahedral distortions. Contrary to the earlier understanding, here we show that the j=3/2 and 1/2 pseudo-spin states have admixture of both t2g and eg characters …
Perovskite oxides are already widely used in industry and have huge potential for novel device applications thanks to the rich physical behaviour displayed in these materials. The key to the functional electronic properties exhibited by perovskites is often the so-called Jahn-Teller distortion. For applications, an electrical control of the Jahn-Teller distortions, which is so far out of reach, would therefore be highly desirable. Based on universal symmetry arguments, we determine new lattice mode couplings that can provide exactly this paradigm, and exemplify the effect from first-principles…
Neutron single crystal diffraction and rotational anisotropy optical second harmonic generation data are presented resolving the nature of the structural distortion realized in electron-doped (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ with $x=0.035$ and $x=0.071$. Once electrons are introduced into the bilayer spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, previous studies have identified the appearance of a low temperature structural distortion and have suggested the presence of a competing electronic instability in the phase diagram of this material. Our measurements resolve a lowering of the …
Two-dimensional charge carrier accumulation at oxide heterointerfaces presents a paradigm shift for oxide electronics. Like a capacitor, interfacial charge buildup couples to an electric field across the dielectric medium. To prevent the so-called polar catastrophe, several charge screening mechanisms emerge, including polar distortions and interfacial intermixing which reduce the sharpness of the interface. Here, we examine how atomic intermixing at oxide interfaces affect the balance between polar distortions and electric potential across the dielectric medium. We find that intermixing moves…
Cooperative Jahn-Teller ordering is well-known to drive the cubic $Fd\overline{3}m$ to tetragonal $I$4$_1$/$amd$ structural distortion in Mn$_3$O$_4$ at 1170 $^{\circ}$C. Further structural distortion occurs in Mn$_3$O$_4$ upon magnetic ordering at 42 K. Employing high-resolution variable-temperature synchrotron x-ray diffraction we show that tetragonal $I$4$_1$/$amd$ and orthorhombic $Fddd$ phases coexist, with nearly equal fractions, below the Néel temperature of Mn$_3$O$_4$. Significant variation of the orthorhombic $a$ and $b$ lattice constants from the tetragonal $a$ lattice constant is o…
