We have studied the correlation between the structural distortion and the electronic/magnetic properties in single-crystalline (Lu,Sc)Fe$_2$O$_4$ (Sc=0.05 and 0.3) by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetic susceptibility, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS)/x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD)measurements. The Rietveld structure analysis of the XRD patterns revealed that the Sc substitution induced an elongation of the FeO$_5$ bipyramidal cages in LuFe$_2$O$_4$ and increased the Fe$_2$O$_4$ bilayer thickness. A non-negligible decrease in the ferrimagnetic transition temperature T$_C$ is observed in the magnetic susceptibility curve of the Sc=0.3 sample, but the XAS/XMCD spectra do not show any difference except for a small reduction of dichroism signals at the Fe$^{3+}$ absorption edge. We interpret this suppression of T$_C$ to be the result of a decreased spin-orbit coupling effect in the Fe$^{2+}$ $e_{1g}$ doublet under $D_{3h}$ symmetry, which is induced by the weakened structural asymmetry of the FeO$_5$ bipyramids.
Electronic structures for the conduction bands of both hexagonal and orthorhombic LuFeO3 thin films have been measured using x-ray absorption spectroscopy at oxygen K (O K) edge. Dramatic differences in both the spectra shape and the linear dichroism are observed. These differences in the spectra can be explained using the differences in crystal field splitting of the metal (Fe and Lu) electronic states and the differences in O 2p-Fe 3d and O 2p-Lu 5d hybridizations. While the oxidation states has not changed, the spectra are sensitive to the changes in the local environments of the Fe3+ and L…
An ab initio study of the doping of alkali halide crystals (AX: A = Li, Na, K, Rb; X = F, Cl, Br, I) by ns2 anions (Ag- and Cu-) is presented. Large active clusters with 179 ions embedded in the surrounding crystalline lattice are considered in order to describe properly the lattice relaxation induced by the introduction of substitutional impurities. In all the cases considered, the lattice distortions imply the concerted movement of several shells of neighbors. The shell displacements are smaller for the smaller anion Cu-, as expected. The study of the family of rock-salt alkali halides (exce…
The substitutional solute atom induced local lattice distortion (LLD) in dilute metal solid solution was believed to be uniform that may even be modeled by using soap bubble raft. Contrary to this conventional picture, we report in this manuscript that the Mo induced LLD in dilute Ti-Mo solid solution is highly non-uniform as evidenced by our first principles calculations. The non-uniform LLD is ascribed to the Jahn-Teller splitting of the degenerated d states of Mo atom. We propose that the substitutional solid solutions with non-uniform LLD should satisfy two conditions. With which, the soli…

We examine the effect of small amounts of magnetic substituents in the $A$ sites of the frustrated spinels MgCr$_2$O$_4$ and ZnCr$_2$O$_4$. Specifically we look for the effects of spin and lattice disorder on structural changes accompanying magnetic ordering in these compounds. Substitution of Co$^{2+}$ on the non-magnetic Zn$^{2+}$ site in Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Cr$_2$O$_4$ where 0\,$<$\,$x$\,$\leq$\,0.2 completely suppresses the spin-Jahn-Teller distortion of ZnCr$_2$O$_4$ although these systems remain frustrated, and magnetic ordering occurs at very low temperatures of $T$\,$<$\,20\,K. On the ot…
We report on detailed structural, electronic and magnetic studies of GdMn$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$O$_3$ for Cr doping levels 0 $\le$ $x$ $\le$ 1. In the solid solutions, the Jahn-Teller distortion associated with Mn$^{3+}$ ions gives rise to major changes in the ${bc}$-plane sub-lattice and also the effective orbital ordering in the ${ab}$-plane, which persist up to the compositions $x$ $\sim$ 0.35. These distinct features in the lattice and orbital degrees of freedom are also correlated with $bc$-plane anisotropy of the local Gd environment. A gradual evolution of electronic states with doping is also c…
Single crystals of Fe-substituted Cu2Mn1-xFexBO5 ludwigites have been synthesized using flux technique (x=0.2, 0.4, 0.5 - in the initial flux system). Structural properties of the synthesized compounds were studied by the single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. Obtained results were analyzed in the relationship with parent compound Cu2MnBO5. It was revealed that the type of monoclinic distortions of Fe-substituted ludwigites is different from the structure of Cu2MnBO5. The real cation composition and local structure of Cu2Mn1-xFexBO5 ludwigites were studied using XANES and EXAFS …
The effect of cationic size mismatch at the A site at constant manganese valence on the structural and magnetic properties of a perovskite-type rare-earth manganate was investigated in the Pr0.9(Na1-xKx)0.1MnO3 solid solution system (0 <= x < 1). All members of this solid solution series are orthorhombic at room temperature, space group Pbnm. Structural refinements using the Rietveld method show that the cell volume increases and the static Jahn-Teller distortion decreases with increasing potassium content x. Magnetic properties are characterized by strong positive θp values, and are ascribed …
The structural environment of substitutional Cr3+ ion in MgAl2O4 spinel has been investigated by Cr K-edge Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) and X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) spectroscopies. First-principles computations of the structural relaxation and of the XANES spectrum have been performed, with a good agreement to the experiment. The Cr-O distance is close to that in MgCr2O4, indicating a full relaxation of the first neighbors, and the second shell of Al atoms relaxes partially. These observations demonstrate that Vegard's law is not obeyed in the MgAl2O4-Mg…
We present a density-functional theory (DFT) study of the structural, electronic, and chemical bonding behaviour in germanium (Ge)-doped vanadium dioxide (VO$_2$). Our motivation is to explain the reported increase of the metal-insulator transition temperature under Ge doping and to understand how much of the fundamental physics and chemistry behind it can be captured at the conventional DFT level. We model doping using a supercell approach, with various concentrations and different spatial distributions of Ge atoms in VO$_2$. Our results suggest that the addition of Ge atoms strongly perturbs…
PbTiO3 has the highest tetragonal distortion (c/a=1.064) and highest spontaneous polarization among perovskite titanates. But, it is hazardous and hence one needs to reduce Pb content by substituting or reducing Pb content for use in applications. Pb(1-x)(K0.5Sm0.5)xTiO3 (0&x&0.5) perovskite powders were synthesized by sol-gel process, where Pb2+ was replaced by a combination of K+10.5Sm+30.5 (equivalent charge and comparable ionic radius) providing an excellent substitution model to study changes in structural and electrical properties. Vibrational properties and dielectric properties are mod…
We investigate the effects of Fe and Co substitutions on the phase stability of the martensitic phase, mechanical, electronic and magnetic properties of magnetic shape memory system Mn$_{2}$NiGa by first-principles Density functional theory(DFT) calculations. The evolution of these aspects upon substitution of Fe and Co at different crystallographic sites are investigated by computing the electronic structure, mechanical properties and magnetic exchange parameters. We find that the martensitic phase of Mn$_{2}$NiGa gradually de-stabilises with increase in concentration of Fe/Co due to the weak…
The antiferromagnetic order and structural distortion in the LaFe(As1-xSbx)O system have been investigated by powder neutron diffraction and physical properties measurements. Polycrystalline samples of LaFe(As1-xSbx)O (x<0.5) were prepared using solid state synthesis at ambient and high pressure. We find that the isoelectronic substitution of Sb for As decreases the structural and magnetic transition temperatures but, contrary to the effects of phosphorus substitution, superconductivity is not induced. Instead a slight increase in the Fe magnetic moment is observed.
Proposed as blanket structural materials for fusion power reactors, reduced activation ferritic/martensitic (RAFM) steel undergoes volume expanding and contracting in a cyclic mode under service environment. Particularly, being subjected to significant fluxes of fusion neutrons RAFM steel suffers considerable local volume variations in the radiation damage involved regions. It is necessary to study the structure properties of the alloying elements in contraction and expansion states. In this paper we studied local substitution structures of thirteen alloying elements Al, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Nb…
Topological materials have recently attracted considerable attention among materials scientists as their properties are predicted to be protected against perturbations such as lattice distortion and chemical substitution. However, any experimental proof of such robustness is still lacking. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate that the topological properties of the ferromagnetic kagome compound Co3Sn2S2 are preserved upon Ni substitution. We systematically vary the Ni content in Co3Sn2S2 single crystals and study their magnetic and anomalous transport properties. For the intermediate Ni…
By means of high resolution neutron powder diffraction at low temperature we have characterized the structural details of $\rm La_{x}Sr_{2-x}FeMoO_6$ ($0\leq {\rm x}\leq 0.5$) and $\rm Ca_{x}Sr_{2-x}FeMoO_6$ ($0\leq {\rm x}\leq 0.6$) series of compounds. This study reveals a similar variation of the mean bond-angle \FeOMo in both series. In contrast, the mean bond-distance \FeMoO\ increases with La but not with Ca substitution. Both series also present a different evolution of the Curie temperature ($T_C$), which raises in the La series and slightly decreases in the Ca one. We thus conclude th…
We report the results of an ab initio modeling of substitutional impurities such as zinc, copper and zirconium ions incorporated into the magnesium sublattice of MgB2. The goal of computational studies was to gain an atomistic understanding of how the structural and bonding properties of the local ionic environment are affected by a change in the host cation. The simulations performed for the given set of substituents indicate that at a low doping level, the induced lattice distortions and additional forces are noticeable small. At the same time, the electron redistributions around the impurit…
Polycrystalline La and Ti co-substituted ceramics were synthesized by the tartaric acid modified sol-gel technique. It was observed that the co-substitution of La & Ti at Bi & Fe sites in BiFeO3 suppress the impurity phase formation which is a common problem in bismuth ferrite. The quantitative crystallographic phase analysis was performed with the help of FULLPROF program which suggests the existence of compositional driven crystal structure transition from rhombohederal (space group R3c) to the orthorhombic (space group Pbnm). The changes in the phonon frequencies as well as line widths of A…
We report the effect of Al substitution on the Mn site of the bilayered half doped manganite La{_1}Sr{_2}Mn{_2}O{_7}. This substitution dilutes the magnetically active Mn-O-Mn network without introducing an appreciable distortion in the lattice and ionic considerations leads to a predominant reduction of Mn{^{4+}} with increasing Al. The rate of fall of the long range antiferromagnetic transition temperature as a function of substitution is seen to match well with established quasi 2D Heisenberg systems indicating that the nature of magnetic interactions in this quasi 2-D system is of the shor…
Ordering of Interstitial Iron Atoms and Local Structural Distortion Induced by Iron Polycomplex in Fe1+yTe1-xSex as Seen via Transmission Electron Microscopy
Single phase Ni substituted LiCo1-xNixO2 solid solutions with x < 0.15 have been synthesized to study the effect of substitution on the magnetic behavior. Two different techniques, magnetic susceptibility and electron paramagnetic resonance, EPR which provide information in two different time windows have been used. The solid solutions have been found to be single phase with large grains conforming to R-3m rhombohedral structure. The lattice parameters c and a increase with increasing Ni substitution but with a nearly constant c/a ratio of about 4.99 in all the cases indicating that the CoO6 a…
Bi1-xLaxFe1-xMnxO3 (x = 0.000 - 0.300) ceramics prepared by the tartaric acid modified sol-gel technique have been studied to analyze the effect of composition driven structural transition on the magnetic properties of bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3). It was found that the co-substitution of La & Mn at Bi & Fe sites leads to suppression of impurity phases (Bi2Fe4O9 and Bi25FeO40) which generally appear in BiFeO3. The quantitative crystallographic phase analysis has been carried out by double phase Rietveld analysis of all the XRD patterns which indicates the existence of compositional driven crystal …
The Fe K X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) of BaFe2-xCoxAs2 superconductors was investigated. No appreciable alteration in shape or energy position of this edge was observed with Co substitution. This result provides experimental support to previous ab initio calculations in which the extra Co electron is concentrated at the substitute site and do not change the electronic occupation of the Fe ions. Superconductivity may emerge due to bonding modifications induced by the substitute atom that weakens the spin-density-wave ground state by reducing the Fe local moments and/or increasin…
Neutron single crystal diffraction and rotational anisotropy optical second harmonic generation data are presented resolving the nature of the structural distortion realized in electron-doped (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ with $x=0.035$ and $x=0.071$. Once electrons are introduced into the bilayer spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, previous studies have identified the appearance of a low temperature structural distortion and have suggested the presence of a competing electronic instability in the phase diagram of this material. Our measurements resolve a lowering of the …
Disorder induced by chemical inhomogeneity and Jahn-Teller (JT) distortions is often observed in mixed valence perovskite manganites. The main reasons for the evolution of this disorder are connected with the cationic size differences and the ratio between JT active and non-JT active ions. The quenched disorder leads to a spin-cluster state above the magnetic transition temperature. The effect of Cu, a B-site substitution in the La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 compound, on the disordered phase has been addressed here. X-ray powder diffraction reveals rhombohedral (R-3c) structures for the two compounds with ne…
The angular dependence (x-ray linear dichroism) of the Cr K pre-edge in MgAl2O4:Cr3+ spinel is measured by means of x-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) and compared to calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and ligand field multiplet theory (LFM). We also present an efficient method, based on symmetry considerations, to compute the dichroism of the cubic crystal starting from the dichroism of a single substitutional site. DFT shows that the electric dipole transitions do not contribute to the features visible in the pre-edge and provides a clear vision of t…
We have investigated magnetic, electrical and thermal transport properties (Seebeck effect and thermal conductivity) of LaSr$_{2}$Mn$_{2-y}$Cr$_{y}$O$_{7}$ polycrystalline samples ($y$=0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6). The Cr$^{3+}$ substitution for Mn$^{3+}$ sites causes a removal of $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital of $e_g$-electron resulting in a volume shrinkage of lattice. Magnetic measurements reveal the appearance of a glassy behavior for Cr-doped samples, accompanied by both a collapse of the A-type antiferromagnetic structure and the growth of ferromagnetic clusters. Cr-doping effect on electrical transpo…
We present a theoretical study using density functional calculations of the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of 3d transition metal, noble metal and Zn atoms interacting with carbon monovacancies in graphene. We pay special attention to the electronic and magnetic properties of these substitutional impurities and found that they can be fully understood using a simple model based on the hybridization between the states of the metal atom, particularly the d shell, and the defect levels associated with an unreconstructed D3h carbon vacancy. We identify three different regimes associ…
V$_{2}$O$_{5}$ in its $ω$ phase (Li$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_{5}$) with excess lithium is a potential alternative to the graphite anode for lithium-ion batteries at low temperature and fast charging conditions due to its safer voltage (0.6 V vs Li$^{+}$/Li(s)) and high lithium transport rate. In-operando cationic disorder, as observed in most ordered materials, can produce significant changes in charge compensation mechanisms, anionic activity, lithium diffusion and operational voltages. In this work, we report the variation in structural distortion, electronic structure and migration barrier accompanie…
We use temperature dependent neutron powder diffraction (NPD) to investigate the structural changes and magnetic interactions in double perovskite Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CoNbO$_6$ ($x=$ 0.4 and 0.6). A structural phase transition from tetragonal ($I4/m$) to monoclinic ($P2_1/n$) is observed between $x=$ 0.4 and 0.6 samples. Interestingly, temperature evolution of the unit cell parameters follow the Grüneisen approximation, and the analysis suggest the isotropic thermal expansion in case of the $x=$ 0.4 sample, whereas the $x=$ 0.6 sample shows the anisotropy where the thermal expansion along the $c$-…
We use x-ray absorption spectroscopy to investigate the local structure and electronic properties of bulk La$_{1-y}$Sr$_{y}$Co$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_3$ ($y=$ 2$x$ as LSCNO and $y=$ 0 as LCNO) samples. The x-ray absorption near-edge spectra (XANES) of LSCNO at Co K-edge affirm the valence state of Co in 3+. However, in the case of the LCNO, a subtle variation in the valence state of Co ions from 3+ to 2+ is evident with Nb substitution. The detailed analysis of the Fourier transform (FT) of the extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) for the LSCNO samples exhibit the two groups of the bond-l…
Chromium iodide monolayers, which have different magnetic properties in comparison to the bulk chromium iodide, have been shown to form skyrmionic states in applied electromagnetic fields or in Janus-layer devices. In this work, we demonstrate that spin-canted solutions can be induced into monolayer chromium iodide by select substitution of iodide atoms with isovalent impurities. Several concentrations and spatial configurations of halide substitutional defects are selected to probe the coupling between the local defect-induced geometric distortions and orientation of chromium magnetic moments…
We combine the results of magnetic and transport measurements with neutron diffraction data to construct the structural and magnetic phase diagram of the entire family of SrMn$_{1-x}$Ru$_{x}$O$_3$ ($0 \leqslant x \leqslant 1$) perovskites. We have found antiferromagnetic ordering of the C type for lightly Ru-substituted materials ($0.06 \leqslant x \leqslant 0.5$) in a similar manner to $R_{y}$Sr$_{1-y}$MnO$_3$ ($R$=La, Pr), due to the generation of Mn$^{3+}$ in both families of manganite perovskites by either $B$-site substitution of Ru$^{5+}$ for Mn$^{4+}$ or $A$-site substitution of $R^{3+}…
Epitaxial strain and chemical substitution have been the workhorses of functional materials design. These static techniques have shown immense success in controlling properties in complex oxides through the tuning of subtle structural distortions. Recently, an approach based on the excitation of an infrared active phonon with intense mid-infrared light has created an opportunity for dynamical control of structure through special nonlinear coupling to Raman phonons. We use first-principles techniques to show that this approach can dynamically induce a magnetic phase transition from the ferromag…
Neutron and X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements have been used to investigate the magnetic and structural phase transitions of the spinel system Fe1+xCr2-xO4(0.0<=x<=1.0). The temperature versus Fe concentration (x) phase diagram features two magnetically ordered states and four structural states below 420 K. The complexity of the phase diagram is closely related to the change in the spin and orbital degrees of freedom induced by substitution of Fe ions for Cr ions. The systematic change in the crystal structure is explained by the combined effects of Jah…
The structural, magnetic and resistive properties of (La1-yYy)FeAsO compounds (y = 0.10, 0.20, 0.30) have been investigated by means of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction as well as by resistivity measurements. The temperatures at which the structural transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic and the magnetic ordering take place progressively reduce by similar amounts with increasing Y substitution on account of the progressive chemical pressure increase. We propose that the structural transition could be originated by a cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion involving the alignment of the full…
Single crystalline MgFeBO_4, Mg_0.5Co_0.5FeBO_4 and CoFeBO_4 have been grown by the flux method. The samples have been characterized by X-ray spectral analysis, X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra have been measured at the Fe andCoK-edges over a wide temperature range (6.5 - 300 K). The composition, the charge state and local environment of both Fe and Co atoms have been determined. The effects of Mg substitution by Co on the local structural distortions have been reve…
We report the structural, magnetic, transport and electronic properties of Nb substituted LaCo$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_3$ ($x =$ 0--0.2). The Rietveld analysis of x-ray diffraction data demonstrate structural phase transitions from rhombohedral to orthorhombic and further to monoclinic with increasing the Nb concentration up to $x \ge$ 0.2. Interestingly, we observed dramatic changes in the magnetization (M) with increasing the Nb concentration, as the M sharply increases below 10~K even at 2.5\% substitution. Furthermore, ac susceptibility data show the spin-glass behavior in $x=$ 0.1 sample. We find…
We explore an opportunity to induce and control tetragonal distortion in materials. The idea involves formation of a binary alloy from parent compounds having body-centered and face-centered symmetries. The concept is illustrated in the case of FeNi$_{1-x}$Co$_x$ magnetic alloy formed by substitutional doping of the L1$_0$ FeNi magnet with Co. Using electronic structure calculations we demonstrate that the tetragonal strain in this system can be controlled by concentration and it reaches maximum for $x=0.5$. This finding is then applied to create a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MAE) in …
We theoretically analyze the influence of chemical disorder on magnetic anisotropy in Ge_{1-x}Mn_{x}Te semiconductor layers known to exhibit carrier-induced ferromagnetism and ferroelectric distortion of rhombohedral crystal lattice. Using DFT method we determine the local changes in the crystal structure due to Mn ions substitution for Ge and due to the presence in Ge_{1-x}Mn_{x}Te of very high concentration of cation vacancies. We calculate the effect of this structural and chemical disorder on single ion magnetic anisotropy mechanism and show that its contribution is order of magnitude smal…
The effect of Li substitution for Mg and of Li-C co-substitution on the superconducting properties and crystal structure of MgB2 single crystals has been investigated. It has been found that hole doping with Li decreases the superconducting transition temperature Tc, but at a slower rate than electron doping with C or Al. Tc of MgB2 crystals with simultaneously substituted Li for Mg and C for B decreases more than in the case where C is substituted alone. This means that holes introduced by Li cannot counterbalance the effect of decrease of Tc caused by introduction of electrons coming from C.…
The effect of tungsten substitution with molybdenum on the structure of CuMo$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_4$ ($x$ = 0.20, 0.30, 0.50, 0.75) solid solutions was studied by multi-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The simultaneous analysis of EXAFS spectra measured at several (Cu K-edge, Mo K-edge and W L$_3$-edge) absorption edges was performed by the reverse Monte Carlo method taking into account multiple-scattering effects. The degree of distortion of the coordination shells and its dependence on the composition were estimated from partial radial distribution functions (RDFs) $g(r)$ and bond angle distrib…
Using first principles density functional theory calculations, we show how Rashba-type energy band splitting in the hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites APbX$_3$ (A=CH$_3$NH$_3^+$, CH(NH$_2$)$_2^+$, Cs$^+$ and X=I, Br) can be tuned and enhanced with electric fields and anisotropic strain. In particular, we demonstrate that the magnitude of the Rashba splitting of tetragonal (CH$_3$NH$_3$)PbI$_3$ grows with increasing macroscopic alignment of the organic cations and electric polarization, indicating appreciable tunability with experimentally-feasible applied fields, even at room temperat…
X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) as well as x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and magnetization of hybrid pyrochlore Eu2-xFexTi2O7 were investigated, where the rare earth Eu (4f) was replaced with transition metal Fe (3d) to introduce competing 4f-3d interactions. It is confirmed that the valence states of Eu and Fe ions are formally trivalent while that of Ti ions are tetravalent (3d0). The analysis yielded that the tetravalent Ti ions occupy octahedral sites with distorted Oh symmetry which is triggered by the presence of vacant 8a anionic site adjacent to TiO6 octahedra. Further s…
We present an ab-initio study of the Mn substitution for Ga in GaN using the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid functional (HSE). Contrary to semi-local functionals, the majority Mn t$_{2}$ manifold splits into an occupied doublet and an unoccupied singlet well above the Fermi-level resulting in an insulating groundstate, which is further stabilized by a sizeable Jahn-Teller distortion. The predictions are confirmed using $GW$ calculations and are in agreement with experiment. A transition from a localized to a delocalized Mn hole state is predicted from GaN to GaAs.
Ferromagnetism and its evolution in the orthorhombic perovskite system Sr1-xCaxRuO3 have been widely believed to correlate with the structural distortion. The recent development of high-pressure synthesis of the Ba substituted Sr1-yBayRuO3 makes it possible to study ferromagnetism over a broader phase diagram, which includes new orthorhombic Imma and the cubic phases. However, the chemical substitutions introduce the A-site disorder effect on Tc, which complicates determination of the relationship between ferromagnetism and the structural distortion. By clarifying the site disorder effect on T…

We report the electronic and local structural investigation of double pervoskites Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CoNbO$_6$ ($x=$ 0--1) using x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended x-ray absorption fine structures (EXAFS) at the Nb, Co, and Sr $K$-edges. The $ab$ $initio$ simulations and detailed analysis of the Nb and Co $K$-edge XANES spectra demonstrate that the observed pre-edge features arise from the transition of 1$s$ electrons to the mixed $p-d$ hybridized states. We reveal a $z$-out Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion in the CoO$_6$ octahedra, which decreases monotonically due to an enhanc…
The nature of phase separation in $Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3$ has been probed by linear as well as nonlinear magnetic susceptibilities and resistivity measurements across the 2nd order paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition ($T_C$) and 1st order ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition ($T_N$). We found that the ferromagnetic (metallic) clusters, which form with the onset of long-range order in the system at $T_C$, continuously decrease their size with the decrease in temperature and coexist with non-ferromagnetic (insulating) clusters. These non-ferromagnetic clusters are identified to be …
Orthorhombic Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.5$) was prepared under high pressure and the variations with $x$ of its structural, magnetic, electrical properties and the polarized Raman spectra were investigated. The lattice parameters change systematically with $x$. Although there are strong indications for increasing disorder above $x = 0.20$, the average structure remains orthorhombic in the whole substitutional range. Ca doping increases conductivity, but temperature dependence of resistivity $ρ$(T) remains semiconducting for all $x$. The average magnetic exchange interaction chang…
