The aim of presented first principles study of La$_{0.5}$Bi$_{0.5}$NiO$_{3}$ is to investigate electronic structure of orthorhombic phase Pbnm. The calculations show that metallicity and magnetism of the system are strongly related with hybridization between Ni 3d and O 2p. To improve the quality of the electronic structure description of the system, especially the treatment of correlation for the Ni 3d, we employ GGA, LDA, and GGA+U, LDA+U. The LSDA results give good agreement with experiment. Thus, the screening effects originating from the hybridized 3d and O 2p electrons are sufficiently strong that they reduce the electronic correlations in the La$_{0.5}$Bi$_{0.5}$NiO$_{3}$, making it a weakly correlated metal.
Raman Spectroscopic measurements are carried out to investigate the structural phase transitions as a function of composition in modified sodium niobate [(1-x) NaNbO3-xBaTiO3:NNBTx] for x=0.0 to 0.15 at room temperature. The characteristic antiferroelectric modes at around 93.4 and 123.6cm-1alongwith a mode at 155.5 cm-1were found to disappear across the structural phase transition from antiferroelectric orthorhombic phase (Pbcm) to ferroelectric orthorhombic phase (Pmc21) phase for x>0.02. The redistribution of intensities and positions of the Raman lines in bending (150-350 cm-1) and stretch…
The short-range organization around Ni atoms in orthorhombic $R$NiO$_{3}$ ($R$=Pr,Nd,Eu) perovskites has been studied over a wide temperature range by Ni K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Our results demonstrate that two different Ni sites, with different average Ni-O bond lengths, coexist in those orthorhombic compounds and that important modifications in the Ni nearest neighbors environment take place across the metal-insulator transition. We report evidences for the existence of short-range charge-order in the insulating state, as found in the monoclinic compounds. Moreover, our results…
First principles calculations based on density functional theory are performed to investigate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of wurtzite ZnO/NiO (0001) interface. By using DFT+U method we discover that the half-metallic behavior of wurtzite NiO (w-NiO) retains in the ZnO/NiO (0001) interface. Through analyses of density of state, charge population and magnetic moments, we find the half-metallicity is weakened around the interface but interface effect is quite localized. More over the interface system keeps a ferromagnetic ground state as bulk w-NiO does. Based on the simula…
A systematic first principles evaluation of the insertion behavior of multi-valent cations in orthorhombic V$_2$O$_5$ is performed. Layer spacing, voltage, phase stability, and ion mobility are computed for Li$^+$, Mg$^{2+}$, Zn$^{2+}$, Ca$^{2+}$, and Al$^{3+}$ intercalation in the $α$ and $δ$ polymorphs.
Combining GGA-plane wave approach as implemented into the VASP - 4.6.19 computer code with a slab model, we studied in detail the atomic and electronic structure of the LaMnO3 surfaces, in both cubic and orthorhombic phases. The results obtained are compared with similar studies for other ABO3-perovskites.
On the basis of density functional theory electronic band structure calculations using the augmented spherical wave method, the electronic and magnetic properties of the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases of Ca3Mn2O7 were investigated and the spin exchange interactions of the orthorhombic phase were analyzed. Our calculations show that the magnetic insulating states are more stable than the non-magnetic metallic state for both polymorphs of Ca3Mn2O7, the orthorhombic phase is more stable than the tetragonal phase, and the ground state of the orthorhombic phase is antiferromagnetic. The total e…
The structural, dielectric and dynamical properties of the low temperature antiferromagnetic orthorhombic phase of CaMnO$_3$ have been computed from first principles using a density functional theory approach within the local spin density approximation. The theoretical structural parameters are in good agreement with experiment. The full set of infrared and Raman zone-center phonons is reported and compared to experimental data. It is shown that coherently with the anomalous Born effective charges and the presence of low frequency polar modes, the static dielectric constant is very large and h…
Native defects in semiconductors play an important role in their optoelectronic properties. Nickel oxide (NiO) is one of the few wide-gap p-type oxide semiconductors and its conductivity is believed to be controlled primarily by Ni-vacancy acceptors. Herein, we present a systematic study comparing the optoelectronic properties of stoichiometric NiO, oxygen-rich NiO with Ni vacancies (NiO:VNi), and Ni-rich NiO with O vacancies (NiO:VO). The optical properties were obtained by spectroscopic ellipsometry, while valence band spectra were probed by high-resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. …
We screened six cobalt-based 18-VEC systems CoVSi, CoNbSi, CoTaSi (Si-group) and CoVGe, CoNbGe, CoTaGe (Ge-group) by the first-principles approach, with the motivation of stabilizing these orthorhombic phases into the cubic symmetry -- favorable for thermoelectrics. Remarkably, it was found that the Ge-group is energetically more favorable in the cubic symmetry than the hitherto orthorhombic phase. We account the cubic ground state of the Si-group to the interplay of internal pressure and covalent interactions. The principle of covalent interactions will provide an insight and could be vital i…
The crystal structures and phonon spectra of orthorhombic cadmium titanate with the $Pbnm$ structure and of its two possible ferroelectrically distorted phases with $Pbn2_1$ and $Pb2_1m$ space groups were calculated from first principles within the density functional theory. The obtained structural parameters and frequencies of Raman- and infrared-active modes are in good agreement with available experimental data for the $Pbnm$ phase. Expansion of the total energy in a Taylor series of two order parameters showed that the ground state of the system corresponds to the $Pbn2_1$ structure into w…
Orthorhombic GdFeO$_3$ has attracted considerable attention in recent years because its magnetic structure is similar to that in the well-known BiFeO$_3$ material. We investigate electronic structure, magnetism, and optical properties of the orthorhombic GdFeO$_3$ in terms of density-functional-theory calculations. The modified Becke-Johnson (mBJ) exchange potential is adopted to improve on the description of the electronic structure. Our calculation show that the G-type antiferromagnetic (G-AFM ordering of Fe spins) phase of orthorhombic GdFeO$_3$ is stable compared to other magnetic phases. …
Recently, osmium diboride (OsB2) has attracted considerable attention as an incompressible and hard material. We investigate the structural property, elastic constants, and electronic structure of orthorhombic OsB2 by the first-principles total energy calculations. The calculations are performed within the density functional framework using the projector augmented plane wave method. The structural properties and bulk modulus of OsB2 compare well with experimental data. The nine independent elastic constants of orthorhombic OsB2 at zero-pressure have also been calculated by symmetry-general lea…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials may have potential applications in thermoelectric devices. In this work, we systematically investigate the thermoelectric properties of orthorhombic group IV-VI monolayers $\mathrm{AB}$ (A=Ge and Sn; B=S and Se) by the first-principles calculations and semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. The spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is included to investigate their electronic transport, which produces observable effects on power factor, especially for n-type doping. According to calculated $ZT$, the four monolayers exhibit diverse anisotropic thermoelectric properties, alt…
A material exhibiting a negative Poisson's ratio is always one of the leading topics in materials science, which is due to the potential applications in those special areas such as defence and medicine. In this letter, we demonstrate a new material, few-layer orthorhombic arsenic, also possesses the negative Poisson's ratio. For monolayer arsenic, the negative Poisson's ratio is predicted to be around -0.09, originated from the hinge-like structure within the single layer of arsenic. When the layer increases, the negative Poisson's ratio becomes more negative and finally approaches the limit a…
Crystallographic shear phases of niobium oxide form an interesting family of compounds that have received attention both for their unusual electronic and magnetic properties, as well as their performance as intercalation electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Here, we present a first-principles density-functional theory study of the electronic structure and magnetism of H-Nb$_2$O$_5$, Nb$_{25}$O$_{62}$, Nb$_{47}$O$_{116}$, Nb$_{22}$O$_{54}$, and Nb$_{12}$O$_{29}$. These compounds feature blocks of niobium-oxygen octahedra as structural units, and we show that this block structure leads…
In this work we perform an ab-initio study of CdTiO3 perovskite in its orthorhombic phase using FLAPW method. Our calculations help to decide between the different cristallographic structures proposed for this perovskite from X-Ray measurements. We compute the electric field gradient tensor (EFG) at Cd site and obtain excellent agreement with available experimental information from a perturbed angular correlation (PAC) experiment. We study EFG under an isotropic change of volume and show that in this case the widely used "point charge model approximation" to determine EFG works quite well.
We investigate the structural, electronic, mechanical and elastic properties of two niobium based intermetallic compounds Nb3Be and Nb3Be2 by using the DFT based theoretical method. A good agreement is found among the structural parameters of both the phases with experimentally evaluated parameters. For both the phases metallic conductivity is observed while Nb3Be phase is more conducting than that of Nb3Be2 phase. Evaluated DOS at Fermi level indicates that Nb3Be2 phase is electrically more stable than Nb3Be phase. For both phases Nb-4d states is mostly responsible for metallic conductivity. …

本研究利用 FPLO 密度泛函计算系统考察六方和正交 Fe-Co 碳化物及其 B、N、过渡金属合金的磁性质,识别出硬磁候选材料并首次揭示 MAE 的近等电子规律。
Niobium provides the basis for all superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities in use, however, hydrogen is readily absorbed by niobium during cavity fabrication and subsequent niobium hydride precipitation when cooled to cryogenic temperatures degrades its superconducting properties. In the last few years the addition of dopant elements such as nitrogen has been experimentally shown to significantly improve the quality factor of niobium SRF cavities. One of the contributors to Q degradation can be presence of hydrides, however, the underlying mechanisms associated with the kinetics of hydr…
In this work we address Li-ion diffusion in thio-LISICON materials and in their oxide counterparts, exploring both the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases of Li10GeP2S12(LGPS) and Li10GeP2O12(LGPO) through extended Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics in the canonical and isobaric-isothermal ensemble. The (quasi-)orthorhombic and tetragonal phases are studied both for the oxide and for the sulfide, with the aim of comparing their conductivity with the same approach; out of these four case studies, tetragonal LGPO has not been reported and, while dynamically stable, it sits (0.04 Ha/formula unit) a…

Detailed Rietveld analyses of thermo-diffractograms show a variety of structural phase transitions ranging from non-polar antiferrodistortive to ferroelectric in nature. In the temperature range of 525 K to 675 K, unambiguous experime…

The data is built into an interpolation formula for lattice and elastic constants of the quartenary (TiNbAlV)B with dilute Al and V concentrations. The lattice and elastic constants of borides in two Ti alloys containing Nb and Al are predicted from microprobe measurements.

The gate defect of the ferroelectric HfO$_2$-based Si field-effect transistor (Si FeFET) plays a dominant role in its reliability issue. The first-principles calculations are an effective method for the atomic-scale understanding of gate defects. However, the first-principles study on the defects of FeFET gate stacks, i.e., metal/orthorhombic-Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_2$/SiO$_2$/Si structure, has not been reported so far. The key challenge is the construction of metal/orthorhombic-Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_2$/SiO$_2$/Si gate stack models. Here, we use the Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_2$(130) high-index cr…
We investigate using first-principles calculations the atomic structure of the orthorhombic phase of Ta$_2$O$_5$. Although this structure has been studied for decades, the correct structural model is controversial owing to the complication of structural disorder. We identify a new low-energy high-symmetry structural model where all Ta and O atoms have correct formal oxidation states of +5 and -2, respectively, and the experimentally reported triangular lattice symmetry of the Ta sublattice appears dynamically at finite temperatures. To understand the complex atomic structure of the Ta$_2$O$_3$…
We present results of local spin density approximation pseudopotential calculations for the ferroelectromagnet, yttrium manganite (YMnO3). The origin of the differences between ferroelectric and non-ferroelectric perovskite manganites is determined by comparing the calculated properties of yttrium manganite in its ferroelectric hexagonal and non-ferroelectric orthorhombic phases. In addition, orthorhombic YMnO3 is compared with the prototypical non-ferroelectric manganite, lanthanum manganite. We show that, while the octahedral crystal field splitting of the cubic perovskite structure causes a…
Experimental data on the structure of ferroelectric oxide Bismuth Titanate suggests two different kinds of structures i.e. orthorhombic and monoclinic. We have performed density functional theory (DFT) based first principle calculations to determine the ground state structure of bismuth titanate, based on experimentally observed monoclinic and orthorhombic phases of Bi4Ti3O12. Both of these phases are optimized to zero pressure and lattice parameters were determined as a = 5.4370 Ang, b = 5.4260 Ang, c = 32.6833 Ang and Z = 4 for structure with space group B2cb and a = 5.4289 Ang, b = 5.4077 A…
The lattice constants of Strontium titanate perovskite has been studied using the Density functional theory formalism at the PBE and the HSE levels of theory. The study has been done in all the 3 existing phases; namely cubic, orthorhombic and tetragonal, however, experimental details are available only for the cubic phase so far.
We present a first-principles investigation of structural and elastic properties of experimentally observed phases of bulk SrRuO$_3$ - namely orthorhombic, tetragonal, and cubic - by applying density functional theory (DFT) approximations. At first, we focus our attention on the accuracy of calculated lattice constants in order to find out DFT approaches that best represent the crystalline structure of SrRuO$_3$, since many important physical quantities crucially depend on change in volume. Next, we evaluate single-crystal elastic constants, mechanical stability, and macroscopic elastic parame…
Using first-principles calculations, the electronic and magnetic properties of orthorhombic BaFeO$_{3}$ (BFO) are investigated with local spin density approximation (LSDA). The calculations reveal that at the optimized lattice volume BFO has a lower energy in ferromagnetic state as compared with antiferromagnetic state. At the equilibrium volume, BFO shows metallic behavior, however, under a large tensile strain ($\sim25\%$), BFO shows half-metallic behavior consistent with the integer magnetic moment of $4.0μ_{\rm{B}}$/fu mainly caused by the $t_{2g}$ and $e_{g}$ electrons of Fe. Including a …
We use resonant and non-resonant X-ray diffraction measurements in combination with first-principles electronic structure calculations and Monte Carlo simulations to study the relationship between crystal structure and multiferroic orders in the orthorhombic perovskite manganites, o-$R$MnO$_3$ ($R$ is a rare-earth cation or Y). In particular, we focus on how the internal lattice parameters (Mn-O bond lengths and Mn-O-Mn bond angles) evolve under chemical pressure and epitaxial strain, and the effect of these structural variations on the microscopic exchange interactions and long-range magnetic…
Using first-principles calculations within generalized gradient approximation, the electronic and magnetic properties of zinc blende (zb) CrP/MnP superlattice are investigated. The equilibrium lattice constant is calculated to be $5.33\,$Å. The stability of ferromagnetic zb CrP/MnP superlattice against antiferromagnetism is considered and it is found that the ferromagnetic CrP/MnP superlattice is more stable than the antiferromagnetic one. It is shown that at the equilibrium lattice constant the CrP/MnP superlattice does not show any half metallicity mainly due to the minority $t_{2g}$ states …
Tuning two dimensional nanomaterial's structural and electronic properties has facilitated the new research paradigm in electronic device applications. In this work, the first principles density functional theory based methods are used to investigate the structural, electronic, and transport properties of an orthorhombic diboron dinitride based polymorph. Interestingly, it depicts a low band gap semiconducting nature with a robust anisotropic behaviour compared to the hexagonal boron nitride, which is an insulator and isotropic. We can also tune the structural and electronic properties of the …
Using density-functional theory with ultrasoft pseudopotentials, we previously investigated the structural and electronic properties of the low-pressure (cubic, tetragonal, and monoclinic) phases of ZrO2 and HfO2, in order to elucidate phonon modes, Born effective charge tensors, and especially the lattice dielectric response in these phases. We now extend this previous work by carrying out similar calculations on the two high-pressure orthorhombic phases, and by providing density-of-states and band-gap information on all polymorphs. Our results show that the electronic structures and dielectr…
Hexagonal BaTiO_3 undergoes a structural phase transition to an orthorhombic C222_1 phase at T_0 = 222 K. The transition is driven by a soft optical mode with E_2u symmetry whose couplings force the appearance of a spontaneous E_2g strain (improper ferroelastic character). Staying within the same E_2u subspace, the system could in principle settle into a second (not observed) orthorhombic phase (Cmc2_1). We have carried out a first-principles investigation of these questions, studying the structure of the existing C222_1 and the "virtual" Cmc2_1 phases, and describing the spontaneous E_2g stra…
The hybrid halide perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 exhibits a complex structural behaviour, with successive transitions between orthorhombic, tetragonal and cubic polymorphs at ca. 165 K and 327 K. Herein we report first-principles lattice dynamics (phonon spectrum) for each phase of CH3NH3PbI3. The equilibrium structures compare well to solutions of temperature-dependent powder neutron diffraction. By following the normal modes we calculate infrared and Raman intensities of the vibrations, and compare them to the measurement of a single crystal where the Raman laser is controlled to avoid degradation of…
By investigating the crystalline structure of ground-state orthorhombic SrRuO$_3$, we present a benchmark study of some of the most popular density functional theory (DFT) approaches from the local density approximation (LDA), generalized-gradient approximation (GGA), and hybrid functional families. Recent experimental success in stabilizing tetragonal and monoclinic phases of SrRuO$_3$ at room temperature sheds a new light on the ability to accurately describe geometry of this material by applying first-principles calculations. Therefore, our work is aimed to analyse the performance of differ…
Entirely inorganic perovskites have attracted enormous attention of late owing to their outstanding applications in optoelectronics including highly stable perovskite solar cells. In-depth understanding of the optoelectronic and transport properties of such materials are vital for practical implementation of the same. The carrier transport properties of the electronic devices based on perovskite materials significantly depend on the effective mass of the respective charge carriers. Here, we have performed first principle calculations with FP-LAPW method for the orthorhombic rubidium lead halid…
We performed first principles calculations for epitaxially strained orthorhombic CaTiO$_3$. The computational results reveal the existence of a metastable ferroelectric phase at compressive strain with unexpected in-plane polarization. Symmetry analysis indicates that two distortion modes at the X point combine to induce the polarization, leading to characterization as a hybrid improper ferroelectric. Our work demonstrates a mechanism for improper ferroelectricity in simple perovskites without the need for symmetry lowering by layering or cation ordering.
Orthorhombic SrIrO3 subjected to strain show tunable transport properties. With underlying symmetry remaining invariant, these properties are associated with IrO6 octahedral tilting. Adopting to first-principles methods, the effects of crystal field, spin-orbit coupling, and Coulomb correlations, on comparable interaction length scales, are discussed. While tilting induces a t2g-eg crystal-field splitting and band narrowing, spin-orbit coupling induces a partial splitting of the Jeff bands rendering SrIrO3 a semi-metallic ground state. The SOC enhanced hybridization of Ir-O orbitals, serve as …
