We report on our investigation of the crystal structure of arsenic under compression, focusing primarily on the pressure-induced A7 to simple cubic (sc) phase transition. The two-atom rhombohedral unit cell is subjected to pressures ranging from 0 GPa to 200 GPa; for each given pressure, cell lengths and angles, as well as atomic positions, are allowed to vary until the fully relaxed structure is obtained. We find that the nearest and next-nearest neighbor distances give the clearest indication of the occurrence of a structural phase transition. Calculations are performed using the local density approximation (LDA) and the PBE and PW91 generalized gradient approximations (GGA-PBE and GGA-PW91) for the exchange-correlation functional. The A7 to sc transition is found to occur at 21+/-1 GPa in the LDA, at 28+/-1 GPa in the GGA-PBE and at 29+/-1 GPa in the GGA-PW91; no volume discontinuity is observed across the transition in any of the three cases. We use k-point grids as dense as 66X66X66 to enable us to present reliably converged results for the A7 to sc transition of arsenic.
The pressure dependence of the Fermi surface of arsenic is examined using the technique of Wannier interpolation, enabling a dense sampling of the Brillouin zone and the ability to capture fine features within it. Focusing primarily on the A7 to simple-cubic phase transition, we find that this semimetal to metal transition is accompanied by the folding of Fermi surfaces. The pressure dependence of the density of states (DOS) of arsenic indicates that the onset of the Peierls-type cubic to rhombohedral distortion is signified by the appearance of emerging van Hove singularities in the DOS, espe…

The material presented here is supplementary to the article entitled: "Density-functional investigation of the rhombohedral to simple cubic phase transition of arsenic"; it deals with the convergence issues involved in studying a semi-metal to metal structural phase transition such as the A7 to sc transition of arsenic.
Calculations of the optical properties of GeTe in the cubic NaCl and rhombohedral ferroelectric structures are reported. The rhombohedral ferroelectric distortion increases the band gap from 0.11 eV to 0.38 eV. Remarkably, substantial changes in optical properties are found even at high energies up to 5 eV. The results are discussed in relation to the bonding of GeTe and to phase change materials based on it.
Under heating, $α$-AlF$_3$ undergoes a structural phase transition from rhombohedral to cubic at temperature $T$ around 730 K. The density functional method is used to examine the $T$=0 energy surface in the structural parameter space, and finds the minimum in good agreement with the observed rhombohedral structure. The energy surface and electronic wave-functions at the minimum are then used to calculate properties including density of states, $Γ$-point phonon modes, and the dielectric function. The dipole formed at each fluorine ion in the low temperature phase is also calculated, and is use…
The current controversies about the existence of an intermediate 'beta' phase of BiFeO_3 and the high temperature paraelectric 'gamma' phase are resolved by studying the sequence of ferroic transitions in 0.8BiFeO_3-0.2Pb(Fe_1/2Nb_1/2)O_3 (BF-0.2PFN) with lowered transition temperature. It is shown that the room temperature ferroelectric phase of 0.8BF-0.2PFN in the R3c space group transforms to the paraelectric/paraelastic cubic (Pm-3m) phase directly without any intermediate 'beta' phase reported in the literature. This transition is of first order type as confirmed by the coexistence of R3c…

We report a comprehensive magneto-transport study on single crystalline p-type topological crystalline insulator (TCI) SnTe, across the cubic-to-rhombohedral (R3m) transition which occurs as a function of temperature. The electrical resistivity of a well-characterized SnTe crystal shows evidence for the cubic-to-rhombohedral structural transition at T$_s$ $\sim$64,K and a carrier density of $\sim$1.8$\times$10$^{20}$ at 77,K. As a function of applied magnetic field perpendicular to the (100) plane, SnTe exhibits a large unsaturated linear magnetoresistance (LMR) reaching a value of 42% at 5K a…
New ultra-hard rhombohedral B2N2 and BC2N - or hexagonal B6N6 and B3C6N3 - are derived from 3R graphite based on crystal chemistry rationale schematizing a mechanism for 2D => 3D transformation. Full unconstrained geometry optimizations leading to ground state energy structures and energy derived quantities as energy-volume equation of states (EOS) were based on computations within the density functional theory (DFT) with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for exchange-correlation (XC) effects. The new binary and ternary phases are characterized by tetrahedral stacking alike diamond, vis…
In this paper we report a new high-pressure rhombohedral phase of Ce2Zr2O8 observed from high-pressure angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies up to nearly 12 GPa. The ambient-pressure cubic phase of Ce2Zr2O8 transforms to a rhombohedral structure beyond 5 GPa with a feeble distortion in the lattice. Pressure evolution of unit-cell volume showed a change in compressibility above 5 GPa. The unit-cell parameters of the high-pressure rhombohedral phase at 12.1 GPa are ah = 14.6791(3) Å, ch = 17.9421(5) Å, V = 3348.1(1) Å3. The structure relation between the parent cubic …
The structure of dielectric perovskite BaZrO$_3$, long known to be cubic at room temperature without any structural phase transition with variation of temperature, has been recently disputed to have different ground state structures with lower symmetries involving octahedra rotation. The pressure-dependent Raman scattering measurements can identify the hierarchy of energetically-adjacent polymorphs, helping in turn understand its ground state structure at atmospheric pressure. Here, Raman scattering spectra of high-quality BaZrO$_3$ single crystals grown by the optical floating zone method are…
Rhombohedral dense forms of carbon, rh-C2 (or hexagonal h-C6), and boron nitride, rh-BN (or hexagonal h-B3N3), are derived from rhombohedral 3R graphite based on original crystal chemistry scheme backed with full cell geometry optimization to minimal energy ground state computations within the quantum density functional theory. Considering throughout hexagonal settings featuring extended lattices, the calculation of the hexagonal set of elastic constants, provide results of large bulk moduli i.e. B0(rh-C2) = 438 GPa close to that of diamond, and B0(rh-BN) = 369 GPa close to that of cubic BN. Considerable work has focused on the use of epitaxial strain to engineer domain structures in ferroic materials. Here, we revisit the observed reduction of domain variants in rhombohedral BiFeO3 films on rare-earth scandate substrates. Prior work has attributed the reduction of domain variants to anisotropic in-plane strain, but our findings suggest that the monoclinic distortion of the substrate, resulting from oxygen octahedral rotation, is the driving force for variant selection. We study epitaxial BiFeO3 DyScO3 (110)o heterostructures with and without ultrathin, cubic SrTiO3 buffer layers …
We report high $q$-resolution neutron scattering data on PMN-$x$PT single crystals with $x=20%$ and 27%. No rhombohedral distortion occurs in the 20PT sample for temperatures as low as 50 K. On the other hand, the 27PT sample transforms into a rhombohedral phase below T$_C \sim 375$ K. Our data provide conclusive evidence that a new phase with an average cubic lattice is present in the bulk of this relaxor system at low PT concentration, in which the ferroelectric polarization and lattice distortion are decoupled. The rhombohedral distortion is limited to the outermost tens of microns of the c…
The lighter group-V element phosphorus forms the As-type (hR2) structure under pressure, above 5 GPa, and at 10 GPa transforms to the simple cubic structure (cP1), similar to arsenic. Despite of its low packing density, the simple cubic structure is stable in phosphorus over a very wide pressure range up to 103 GPa. On further pressure increase, the simple cubic structure transforms to a simple hexagonal structure (hP1) via a complex phase that was solved recently as incommensurately modulated. Structural transformations of phosphorus are connected with the changes of physical properties. Abov…
The phase diagram of the Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 and PbTiO3 solid solution (PMN-xPT) indicates a rhombohedral ground state for x < 0.32. X-ray powder measurements by Dkhil et al. show a rhombohedrally split (222) Bragg peak for PMN-10%PT at 80 K. Remarkably, neutron data taken on a single crystal of the same compound with comparable q-resolution reveal a single resolution-limited (111) peak down to 50 K, and thus no rhombohedral distortion. Our results suggest that the structure of the outer layer of these relaxors differs from that of the bulk, which is nearly cubic, as observed in PZN by Xu et al.
The dielectric properties of tantalum doped BaTi0.85Zr0.15O3 were investigated. The conventional solid state reaction method was used to make the ceramic samples. The composition was close to the pinch point of the three structure phase transitions in BaTiO3. Powder X-ray diffraction result indicated that the samples were in very slightly distorted rhombohedral structure at room temperature, and the dielectric measurement showed only cubic-to-rhombohedral phase transition occurred. Instead of a sharp peak characteristic of a ferroelectric (FE) transition, the large dielectric response was simi…
Based on the ab initio electronic structure calculations the picture of ferromagnetism in polimerized C60 is proposed which seems to explain the whole set of controversial experimental data. We have demonstrated that, in contrast with cubic fullerene, in rhombohedral C60 the segregation of iron atoms is energetically unprofitable which is a strong argument in favor of intrinsic character of carbon ferromagnetism which can be caused by vacancies with unpaired magnetic electrons. It is shown that: (i) energy formation of the vacancies in the rhombohedral phase of C60 is essentially smaller than …
We report X-ray structural studies of the metal-insulator phase transition in bismuth ferrite, BiFeO3, both as a function of temperature and of pressure (931 oC at atmospheric pressure and ca. 45 GPa at ambient temperature). Based on the experimental results, we argue that the metallic gamma-phase is not rhombohedral but is instead the same cubic Pm3m structure whether obtained via high temperature or high pressure, that the MI transition is second order or very nearly so, that this is a band-type transition due to semi-metal band overlap in the cubic phase and not a Mott transition, and that …
During past years, a number of reports have been published on synthesis of tetragonal allotrope of boron, t-B52 phase. However, no unambiguous characterization of the crystal structure has been performed to the present time, while remarkable variation of the a/c lattice-parameter ratio raises strong doubts about its uniqueness. Here the Rietveld refinement of the crystal structure of the high pressure - high temperature boron phase synthesized by a direct solid-state transformation of rhombohedral beta-B106 at 20 GPa and 2500 K has been reported for the first time. Although this boron allotrop…
SnTe, an archetypical topological crystalline insulator, often shows a transition from a highly symmetric cubic phase to a rhombohedral structure at low temperatures. In order to achieve the highly symmetric cubic phase at low temperatures suitable for quantum behaviour, we have employed the modified Bridgman method to grow a high-quality single-crystalline sample of SnTe. Analysis of the crystal structure using Laue diffraction and rocking curve measurements show a very high degree of single crystallinity of the sample. Resistivity and the specific heat data do not show the signature of struc…
Phonon spectra of cubic rubidium niobate and rubidium tantalate with the perovskite structure are calculated from first principles within the density functional theory. Based on the analysis of unstable modes in the phonon spectra, the structures of possible distorted phases are determined, their energies are calculated, and it is shown that $R3m$ is the ground-state structure of RbNbO3. In RbTaO3, the ferroelectric instability is suppressed by zero-point lattice vibrations. For ferroelectric phases of RbNbO3, spontaneous polarization, piezoelectric, nonlinear optical, electro-optical, and oth…
Using first-principles calculations, the phonon frequencies at the $Γ$ point and the dielectric tensor are determined and analysed for the cubic and rhombohedral phases of BaTiO$_{3}$. The dipole-dipole interaction is then separated à la Cochran from the remaining short-range forces, in order to investigate their respective influence on lattice dynamics. This analysis highlights the delicate balance of forces leading to an unstable phonon in the cubic phase and demonstrates the extreme sensitivity of this close compensation to minute effective charge changes. Within our decomposition, the stab…
We report on observation of ferroelastic domain structure in single crystals of multiferroic CaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ at room temperature. Two types of ferroelastic domain wall are found, consistent with the material's rhombohedral symmetry that is reduced from cubic symmetry at higher temperatures. Using Raman spectroscopy along with other measurements, we develop a systematic method to determine the microscopic domain orientation. Moreover, we find a switching behavior of the domains, which allows us to detwin the crystals conveniently at room temperature using a moderate uniaxial compression. Our r…
The results of magnetic investigations on a new series of compounds, Mn2R3Sb3O14, containing 2-dimensional Kagome lattice of R ions and belonging to pyrochlore series, are presented. Crystallographic features of light R members (R= La, Pr and Nd) of this family, as established in the recent literature, have been reported to be novel in many respects, in particular, the rhomohedral nature of the structure which is rare among pyrochlores. It was also reported that, as the R becomes heavier, beyond R= Sm, the fraction of well-known cubic pyrochlore phase tends to gradually dominate. Here, we repo…
The local structure of high pressure BaTiO$_3$ has been interrogated by neutron total scattering methods, up to pressures of 4.18 GPa at ambient temperature. Competitive refinements of cubic, tetragonal and rhombohedral distortion modes against pair distribution functions indicate contrasting local structure behaviour of temperature- and pressure-induced cubic BaTiO$_3$. Suppression of the mode amplitude, isotropy of the order parameter direction and loss of sensitivity to correlated Ti displacements at high pressure all suggest a high-pressure local structure that is more consistent with the …
Using density functional theory calculations, the ground state structure of BaFeO$_3$ (BFO) is investigated with local spin density approximation (LSDA). Cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, and rhombohedral types BFO are considered to calculate the formation enthalpy. The formation enthalpies reveal that cubic is the most stable structure of BFO. Small energy difference between the cubic and tetragonal suggests a possible tetragonal BFO. Ferromagnetic(FM) and anitiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling between the Fe atoms show that all the striochmetric BFO are FM. The energy difference between FM and AFM…
In the substitutionally disordered narrow-gap semiconductor Pb_{1-x}Ge_xTe, a finite-temperature cubic-rhombohedral transition appears above a critical concentration $x \approx 0.005$. As a first step towards a first-principles investigation of this transition in the disordered system, a (hypothetical) ordered cubic Pb_3GeTe_4 supercell is studied. First principles density-functional calculations of total energies and linear response functions are performed using the conjugate-gradients method with ab initio pseudopotentials and a plane-wave basis set. Unstable modes in Pb_3GeTe_4 are found, d…
In applying the semiempirical intermediate neglect of differential overlap (INDO) method based on the Hartree-Fock formalism to a cubic perovskite-based ferroelectric material KNbO3, it was demonstrated that the accuracy of the method is sufficient for adequately describing the small energy differences related to the ferroelectric instability. The choice of INDO parameters has been done for a system containing Nb. Based on the parametrization proposed, the electronic structure, equilibrium ground state structure of the orthorhombic and rhombohedral phases, and Gamma-TO phonon frequencies in cu…
We show that epitaxial (001) thin films of multiferroic bismuth ferrite BiFeO3 are monoclinic at room temperature instead of tetragonal or Rhombohedral as reported earlier . We report a orthorhombic order-disorder beta-phase between 820C and 950C contrary to the earlier report. The transition sequence monoclinic-orthorhombic phase in (001)BiFeO3 thin film (rhombohedral-orthorhombic transition in single crystal) resembles that of BaTiO3 or PbSc1/2Ta1/2O3. The transition to the cubic $γ$-phase causes an abrupt collapse of the bandgap toward zero (insulator-metal transition) at the orthorhombic-c…
A correlation between the crystal structure and magnetic properties of system (1-x)BiFeO$_3$-(x)BaTiO$_3$ with compounds across the morphotropic phase boundary was studied using X-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetometry, and Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements. Increase in the dopants content leads to the structural transition from the rhombohedral phase to the cubic phase via a formation of the two-phase region (0.2 < x < 0.33), wherein the magnetic structure changes from the modulated G-type antiferromagnetic to the collinear antiferromagnetic via a stabilization of the non-collinear antif…
We report a high-pressure single-crystal synchrotron x-ray diffraction on a LaAlO3 single crystal. The transition from rhombohedral to cubic at 14.8 GPa is confirmed by the loss of the superstructure reflections, whose intensity shows a linear pressure dependence, characteristic of a second-order transition. The crystal remains cubic up to 63 GPa, the highest pressure reached, which provides a confirmation over a very large pressure range of the general rules for the evolution of distortions of perovskites under pressure. We give the parameters of Birch-Murnaghan equations of state in the low-…
Structure of the morphotropic phase and the phase coexistence region has been investigated in (1-x)Bi(Mg1/2Zr1/2)O3-xPbTiO3 ceramics. The structure is cubic with space group Pm3m for the compositions with x<0.57 and tetragonal with space group P4mm for the compositions with x>0.59. For the compositions with 0.56<x<0.60, both the tetragonal and cubic phases coexist, which suggest very narrow morphotropic phase boundary region of compositional width Δx~0.03. Rietveld refinement of the structure using x-ray diffraction data confirms coexistence of the tetragonal and cubic phases in the MPB region…
The recent surge of interest in phase change materials GeTe, Ge$_2$Sb$_2$Te$_5$, and related compounds motivated us to revisit the structural phase transition in GeTe in more details than was done before. Rhombohedral-to-cubic ferroelectric phase transition in GeTe has been studied by high resolution neutron powder diffraction on a spallation neutron source. We determined the temperature dependence of the structural parameters in a wide temperature range extending from 309 to 973 K. Results of our studies clearly show an anomalous volume contraction of 0.6\% at the phase transition from the rh…
Single phase barium titanate-bismuth ferrite ((1-x)BaTi$_3$-(x)BiFe$_3$, BTO-BFO) solid solutions were prepared using citric acid and ethylene glycol assisted sol-gel synthesis method. Depending on the dopant content the samples are characterized by tetragonal, tetragonal-pseudocubic, pseudocubic and rhombohedral structure as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and XRD measurements. An increase of the BFO content leads to a reduction in the cell parameters accompanied by a decrease in polar distortion of the unit cell wherein an average particle size increases from 60 up to 350 nm. Non zero piezor…
For topological insulators and topological crystalline insulators (TCIs), their exotic surface states are promising for fundamental condensed matter physics research as well as future electronics such as low-dissipation electronics and spintronics. However, the high bulk carrier density that often dominates the transport property is the major materials challenge, critically hindering our ability to study and manipulate the surface states. In this manuscript, we demonstrate an alloying strategy, SnSexTe1-x, to effectively reduce the bulk carrier density. As long as SnSexTe1-x remains in the cub…
The proximity to structural phase transitions in IV-VI thermoelectric materials is one of the main reasons for their large phonon anharmonicity and intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity $κ$. However, the $κ$ of GeTe increases at the ferroelectric phase transition near $700$ K. Using first-principles calculations with the temperature dependent effective potential method, we show that this rise in $κ$ is the consequence of negative thermal expansion in the rhombohedral phase and increase in the phonon lifetimes in the high-symmetry phase. Negative thermal expansion increases phonon grou…
We use density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the lattice vibrations and electronic properties of the correlated metal LaNiO$_3$. To characterize the rhombohedral to cubic structural phase transition of perovskite LaNiO$_3$, we examine the evolution of the Raman-active phonon modes with temperature. We find that the $A_{1g}$ Raman mode, whose frequency is sensitive to the electronic band structure, is a useful signature to characterize the octahedral rotations in rhombohedral LaNiO$_3$. We also study the importance of electron--electron correlation effects on the atomic structur…
Crystals of solid solutions Bi(1-x)R(x)FeO(3),here R= La, Dy, Gd, were obtained with x <=0.7. Solid solutions of the stated rare earths, as x is increased from 0 to 0.7, have one and the same sequence of five crystal structures (rhombohedral C3v 6, triclinic C1 1,orthorhombic D2 6,orthorhombic D2 5, orthorhombic C2v 9). The ferroelectric-paraelectric transition occurs in rhombohedral and triclinic crystals at T=810-560°C.The high temperature modifications are orthorhombic and cubic. The orthorhombic structure C2v 9 holds up to 1180°C.The ferroelectric domain structure was distinguished in all …
A detailed investigation using variable temperature powder neutron diffraction demonstrates that BiFeO3 undergoes a phase transition from the ferroelectric alpha phase (rhombohedral, R3c) to a paraelectric beta phase (orthorhombic, Pbnm) between 820 oC and 830 oC. Co-existence of both phases over a finite temperature interval, together with abrupt changes in key structural parameters, confirm that the transition is firstorder. The beta phase corresponds to the GdFeO3-type perovskite. The metastability of BiFeO3 relative to Bi2Fe4O9 above 810 oC precludes observation of a reported cubic gamma p…
We report the first principles investigations on the phonons of three polytypes of BaTiO3 (BTO): paraelectric (PE) cubic Pm-3m and two ferroelectric (FE) phases, tetragonal P4mm and rhombohedral R3m. The phonon frequencies calculated using various exchange-correlation functionals, including density functional theory, Hartree-Fock approximation, and their hybrids were reviewed. The pressure-induced interplays between the modes form individual phases were explored by calculating the phonon modes as a function of pressure, P from -15 to 230 GPa. The pressure-sensitive modes of the FE phases showe…
We find an unexpected tetragonal-to-monoclinic-to-rhombohedral-to-cubic phase transition sequence induced by pressure, and a morphotropic phase boundary in a pure compound using first-principles calculations. Huge dielectric and piezoelectric coupling constants occur in the transition regions, comparable to those observed in the new complex single-crystal solid-solution piezoelectrics such as Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$-PbTiO$_{3}$, which are expected to revolutionize electromechanical applications. Our results show that morphotropic phase boundaries and giant piezoelectric effects do not …
The octahedral tilting and ferroelectric-like structural transition of LiOsO3 metallic perovskite [Nature Materials 12, 1024 (2013)] was examined using first-principles density-functional theory. In LiOsO3, a-a-a- octahedral titling mode is responsible for the cubic to rhombohedral structural transition, which is stable phase at room temperature. At low temperatures, a non-centrosymmetric transition to a rhombohedra phase was realized due to zone center phonon softening. The phase transition behavior of LiOsO3 can be explained fully by density functional calculations and phonon calculations. T…
In piezoelectric ceramics the changes in the phase stabilities versus stress and temperature in the vicinity of the phase boundary play a central role. The present study was dedicated to the classical piezoelectric, lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) ceramic with composition Pb(Zr$_{0.54}$Ti$_{0.46}$)O$_3$ at the Zr-rich side of the morphotropic phase boundary at which both intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to piezoelectricity are significant. The pressure-induced changes in this two-phase (rhombohedral $R3c$+monoclinic $Cm$ at room temperature and $R3c+P4mm$ above 1 GPa pressures) system were …
The nature of a phase transition is inherently connected to the changes in the crystalline symmtry, which is typically probed by elastic or inelastic scattering with neutrons, electrons or photons. When such a phase transition is stimulated by light or other sudden perturbations the solid evolves along a non-equilibrium pathway of which the underlying physics is poorly understood. Here we use picosecond Raman scattering to study the photo-induced ultrafast dynamics in Peierls distorted Antimony. We find evidence for an ultrafast non-thermal reversible structural phase transition. Most surprisi…
The phase stability of the various crystalline structures of the super-heavy element Copernicium was determined based on the first-principles calculations with different levels of the relativistic effects. We utilized the Darwin term, mass-velocity, and spin-orbit interaction with the single electron framework of the density functional theory while treating the exchange and correlation effects using local density approximations. It is found that the spin-orbit coupling is the key component to stabilize the body-centered cubic ($bcc$) structure over the hexagonal closed packed ($hcp$) structure…
A review is given of recent neutron and x-ray scattering studies of the lead-oxide perovskite relaxor systems Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3 and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3. X-ray measurements by Noheda et al. have established that these two systems exhibit nearly identical phase diagrams in which a rhombohedral-monoclinic-tetragonal structural sequence takes place with increasing PbTiO3 concentration. Recent high-energy x-ray and neutron measurements on single crystals of PZN and PMN-10PT, however, show that the rhombohedral distortions occur only in the outermost 20 - 40 microns, while the bulk of ea…
We report the phase diagram of (Ba1-xCax)(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O3 solid solution. It is found that substitution of smaller Ca ions for Ba ions can slightly increase the cubic-tetragonal(T) para-ferroelectric phase transition temperature and strongly decrease the T-orthorhombic (O) and O-rhombohedral (R) transition. This unique ferroelectric phase evolution is attributed to Ca off-centering effects. More importantly, lowering of the T-O or O-R phase transitions allows us to prepare the piezoelectric ceramics with a strain response as high as S/E~800 pm/V (E=10 kV/cm) over a wide range of compositions wit…
Dielectric permittivity and infrared reflectivity spectra of Li doped KNbO3 single crystals have been studied for the first time for K1-xLixNbO3 (KLN) with x = 0.015, 0.02, 0.065. It was found that like in KTaO3, Li admixture results in appearance of dielectric relaxation with the relaxation parameters very close to those in KTaO3 quantum paraelectric. It was attributed to 90-grad dipole reorientation of Li+ <100> off centers substituted K+, which appear to be presents as in paraelectric cubic phase as in ferroelectric phase down to low temperatures. Besides, Li doping is accompanied by increa…
By applying density functional theory (DFT) approximations, we present a first-principles investigation of elastic properties for the experimentally verified phases of a metallic perovskite LaNiO$_{3}$. In order to improve the accuracy of calculations, at first we select the most appropriate DFT approaches according to their performance in reproducing the low-temperature crystalline structure and the electronic density of states observed for the bulk LaNiO$_{3}$. Then, we continue with the single-crystal elastic constants and mechanical stability for the most common rhombohedral as well as hig…
The prototypical phase change material GeTe shows an enigmatic phase transition at Tc ca. 650 K from rhombohedral (R3m) to cubic (Fm-3m) symmetry. While local probes see little change in bonding, in contrast, average structure probes imply a displacive transition. Here we use high energy X-ray scattering to develop a model consistent with both the local and average structure pictures. We detect a correlation length for domains of the R3m structure which shows power law decay upon heating. Unlike a classical soft mode, it saturates at ca. 20 Å above Tc. These nanoclusters are too small to be ob…
The structure and the dielectric properties of Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PZN) crystal have been investigated by means of high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (with an x-ray energy of 32 keV) and dielectric spectroscopy (in the frequency range of 100 Hz - 1 MHz). At high temperatures, the PZN crystal exhibits a cubic symmetry and polar nanoregions inherent to relaxor ferroelectrics are present, as evidenced by the single (222) Bragg peak and by the noticeable tails at the basis of the peak. At low temperatures, in addition to the well-known rhombohedral phase, another low-symmetry, probably fe…
From the phase diagram as proposed by Lei et.al., [J. App. Phys 101, 084105 (2007)] a $BaSn_{0.15}Ti_{0.85}O_{3}$ is chosen showing a diffuse phase transition between cubic to rhombohedral (C-R) near room temperature. Dielectric analysis confirms a phase transition near room temperature ($T_{C}$ $\approx$ 290 K) and also frequency dispersion in dielectric constant is observed towards low temperature. Polarization and first-order reversal curves (FORC) suggest that the system is in re-entrant phase at low temperatures. Put together, all these electrical characterization results points toward th…
