We propose four different thermodynamically stable structural phases of arsenic monolayers based on ab-initio density functional theory calculations all of which undergo a topological phase transition on application of a perpendicular electric field. All the four arsenic monolayer allotropes have a wide band gap, varying from 1.21 eV to 3.0 eV (based on GW calculations), and in general they undergo a metal-insulator quantum phase transition on application of uniaxial in-layer strain. Additionally an increasing transverse electric field induces band-inversion at the Γ point in all four monolaye…
The pressure dependence of the Fermi surface of arsenic is examined using the technique of Wannier interpolation, enabling a dense sampling of the Brillouin zone and the ability to capture fine features within it. Focusing primarily on the A7 to simple-cubic phase transition, we find that this semimetal to metal transition is accompanied by the folding of Fermi surfaces. The pressure dependence of the density of states (DOS) of arsenic indicates that the onset of the Peierls-type cubic to rhombohedral distortion is signified by the appearance of emerging van Hove singularities in the DOS, espe…
We design a multiferroic metal that combines seemingly incompatible ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity, and metallicity by hole doping a two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectric with high density of states near the Fermi level. The strong magnetoelectric effect is demonstrated in hole-doped and arsenic-doped monolayer α-In2Se3 using first-principles calculations. Taking advantage of the oppositely charged surfaces created by an out-of-plane polarization, the 2D magnetization and metallicity can be electrically switched on and off in an asymmetrically doped monolayer. The substitutional arsenic defect …
Polar metals based on binary and ternary compounds have been demonstrated in literature. Here, we propose a design principle for ferroelectric-like elemental polar metals and relate it to real materials. The design principle is that, to be an elemental polar metal, atoms should occupy at least two inequivalent Wyckoff positions in a crystal with a polar space group, where inversion symmetry is spontaneously broken. According to this rule, we propose the first class of potential ferroelectric-like elemental polar metals in a distorted α-La-like structure with a polar space group P63mc in which …
To explore the potential of molecular gas treatment of freshly cut lithium foils in non-electrolyte based passivation of high energy-density Li anodes, density functional theory (DFT) has been used to study the decomposition of molecular gases on metallic lithium surfaces. By combining DFT geometry optimization and Molecular Dynamics, the effects of atmospheric (N2, O2, CO2) and hazardous (F2, SO2) gas decomposition on Li(bcc) (100), (110), and (111) surfaces on relative surface energies, work functions, and emerging electronic and elastic properties are investigated. The simulations suggest t…
We present a formalism for coupling a density functional theory-based quantum simulation to a classical simulation for the treatment of simple metallic systems. The formalism is applicable to multiscale simulations in which the part of the system requiring quantum-mechanical treatment is spatially confined to a small region. Such situations often arise in physical systems where chemical interactions in a small region can affect the macroscopic mechanical properties of a metal. We describe how this coupled treatment can be accomplished efficiently, and we present a coupled simulation for a bulk…
Bismaleimide (BMI) resins are a new breed of thermosetting resins used mainly for high temperature applications and have major usage in aerospace. FTIR studies have shown the signatures of imide, CNC stretching, malemide and N-H stretching. These BMI polymer coatings were deposited on aluminum and mild steel substrates by sprinkling powers followed by baking. Thermo gravimetric analysis and Differential scanning calorimetric studies showed the degradation temperature of these polymers around 370oC. Aluminum coatings were deposited on BMI previously deposited on Al and mild steel to make a meta…
We report measurement of the valence-to-core (VTC) region of the K-shell x-ray emission spectra from several Zn and Fe inorganic compounds, and their critical comparison with several existing theoretical treatments. We find generally good agreement between the respective theories and experiment, and in particular find an important admixture of dipole and quadrupole character for Zn materials that is much weaker in Fe-based systems. These results on materials whose simple crystal structures should not, a prior, pose deep challenges to theory, will prove useful in guiding the further development…
Abstract The results of intense pulsed ion beam (IPIB) treatment of the soft magnetic amorphous alloy of a FINEMET-type are presented. Foil produced from the alloy was irradiated with short (about 100 ns) pulses of carbon ions and protons with energy of up to 300 keV and an energy density of up to 7 J/cm2. X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements were used to investigate structural and magnetic properties of irradiated foils. It is shown that the foil remains intact after the treatment, and the crystal structure still amorphous. Spontaneous magnetization vector is fo…
Resist residue from the device fabrication process is a general and significant source of the metal/graphene contact interface contamination. In this paper, Ultraviolet-Ozone (UVO) treatment is proven to be an effective way of cleaning the metal/graphene interface. Electrical measurements of devices, which were fabricated by using UVO treatment of the metal/graphene contact region, show that stable and highly reproducible low contact resistance between metal and graphene is obtained without affecting the electrical properties of the graphene channel itself.
In this review article, we discuss the synthesis, properties, and novel device applications of low-symmetry 2D materials, including black phosphorus and its arsenic alloys, compounds with black-phosphorus like structure such as the monochalcogenides of group IV elements like Ge and Sn, as well as the class of low-symmetry transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) materials such as rhenium disulfide (ReS2) and rhenium diselenide (ReSe2). Their unique physical properties resulting from the low symmetry in-plane crystal structure and the prospects of their application in nanoelectronics and nanophot…
A straightforward means to include explicit hydrogen bonds within the Universal Force Field is presented. Instead of treating hydrogen bonds as non-bonded interaction subjected to electrostatic and Lennard-Jones potentials, we introduce an explicit bond with negligible bond order, thus maintaining the structural integrity of the H-bonded complexes and avoiding the necessity to assign arbitrary charges to the system. The explicit hydrogen bond changes the coordination number of the acceptor site and the approach is thus most suitable for systems with under-coordinated atoms, such as many metal-…
Existence of the sp-d hybridization of the valence band states of the fcc Ca and Sr in the vicinity of the Fermi level indicates that their electronic wave function can have a multi-reference (MR) character. We performed a wave function-based correlation treatment for these materials by means of the method of increments. As oppose to the single-reference correlation treatment (here: coupled cluster), which fails to describe cohesive properties in both cases, employing the MR averaged coupled pair functional one can achieve almost 100 % of the experimental correlation energy.
We report reduced contact resistance of single-layer graphene devices by using ultraviolet ozone (UVO) treatment to modify the metal/graphene contact interface. The devices were fabricated from mechanically transferred, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown, single layer graphene. UVO treatment of graphene in the contact regions as defined by photolithography and prior to metal deposition was found to reduce interface contamination originating from incomplete removal of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and photoresist. Our control experiment shows that exposure times up to 10 minutes did not i…
An atypical electrical behavior of WS2 nanosheets deposited on Cu electrodes is reported here. The characteristic Raman peaks at 355cm-1 and 421.8cm-1 confirm the few-layer structure of WS2. The addition of heavy metal ions of ~30 micro Liter on this platform results in non-ohmic behavior in I-V characteristics, accompanied by a dramatic rise of current from nA to micro Ampere Additionally, this atypical behavior is found to be reversible. Subsequent to removal of these ions from the nanosheets, it again exhibits normal ohmic I-V characteristics. It is envisioned that this unusual characterist…
The microstructural evolution of a dissimilar metal weld (DMW) obtained by narrow-gap gas tungsten arc welding (NG-GTAW) was investigated after it was subjected to a post-weld heat treatment (PWHT). The case studied here is a joint between low-alloy steel pipes and a stainless steel steam generator using a nickel based alloy as filler material. The fusion boundary that was the focus of this work was that between the low-alloy steel (2.25Cr-1Mo) and the nickel alloy (alloy 82). The difference in matrix phase and chemical composition between the two alloys leads to a large difference in chemical…
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been coated with gold and platinum nanoparticles either by microwave treatment or by the click reaction and the Raman spectra of these SWNT-metal nanoparticle composites have been investigated. Analysis of the G bands in the Raman spectra shows an increase in the proportion of metallic SWNTs on attachment with metal nanoparticles. This conclusion is also supported by the changes observed in the RBM bands. Ab-initio calculations reveal that semiconductor-metal transition occurs in SWNTs due to Columbic charge transfer between the metal nanoparticles a…
Hydrogenation is an effective way to tune material property1-5. Traditional techniques for doping hydrogen atoms into solid materials are very costly due to the need for noble metal catalysis and high-temperature/pressure annealing treatment or even high energy proton implantation in vacuum condition5-8. Acid solution contains plenty of freely-wandering protons, but it is difficult to act as a proton source for doping, since the protons always cause corrosions by destroying solid lattices before residing into them. Here we achieve a facile way to hydrogenate monoclinic vanadium dioxide (VO2) w…
The solidification behavior of a eutectic AlCu specimen is investigated via in situ scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) experiments. Solidification conditions are varied by imposing various cooling conditions via a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) based membrane. The methodology allows the use of material processed by a melting and casting route close to industrial metallurgically fabricated material for in situ STEM solidification studies. Different rapid solidification morphologies could be obtained solely on a single specimen by the demonstrated strategy. Additional post-…
We present a microscopic theory of neutral excitons and charged excitons (trions) in monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides, including molybdenum disulfide. Our theory is based on an effective mass model of excitons and trions, parametrized by ab initio calculations and incorporating a proper treatment of screening in two dimensions. The calculated exciton binding energies are in good agreement with high-level many-body computations based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Furthermore, our calculations for the more complex trion species compare very favorably with recent experimental meas…
The repercussions of an inaccurate account of electronic states near the Fermi level EF by hybrid functionals in predicting several important metallic properties are investigated. The diffculties in- clude a vanishing or severely suppressed density of states (DOS) at EF, significantly widened valence bandwidth, greatly enhanced electron-phonon (el-ph) deformation potentials, and an overestimate of magnetic moment in transition metals. The erroneously enhanced el-ph coupling calculated by hybrid functionals may lead to a false prediction of lattice instability. The main culprit of the problem c…
A first-principles treatment of the vibrational dynamics of molecular chemisorbates on metal surfaces is presented. It is shown that the mean field quantum evolution of the vibrational position operator is determined by a quantum Langevin equation with an electronic friction. In the mean field limit, the quantum noise and friction are related by the quantum fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The classical limit of this model is shown to agree with previously proposed models. A criterion is presented to describe the validity of the weak-coupling approximation and equations of motion for the dynam…
It is shown that the errors of present-day exchange-correlation (xc) functionals are rather short ranged. For extended systems the correction can therefore be evaluated by analyzing properly chosen clusters and employing highest-quality quantum chemistry methods. The xc correction rapidly approaches a universal dependence with cluster size. The method is applicable to bulk systems as well as to defects in the bulk and at surfaces. It is demonstrated here for CO adsorption at transition-metal surfaces, where present-day xc functionals dramatically fail to predict the correct adsorption site, an…
The performance of graphene-based transistors is often limited by the large electrical resistance across the metal-graphene contact. We report an approach to achieve ultra-low resistance metal contacts to graphene transistors. Through a process of metal-catalyzed etching in hydrogen, multiple nano-sized pits with zigzag edges are created in the graphene that form strong chemical bonds with deposited nickel metallization for source-drain contacts without the need for further annealing. This facile contact treatment prior to electrode metallization results in contact resistance as low as 100 ohm…
We investigate the effect of a single heat treatment cycle on the potential energy states and mechanical properties of metallic glasses using molecular dynamics simulations. We consider the three-dimensional binary mixture, which was initially cooled with a computationally slow rate from the liquid state to the solid phase at a temperature well below the glass transition. It was found that a cycle of heating and cooling can relocate the glass to either rejuvenated or relaxed states, depending on the maximum temperature and the loading period. Thus, the lowest potential energy is attained after…
We aim to illuminate how the microscopic properties of a metal surface map to its electric-field noise characteristics. In our system, prolonged heat treatments of a metal film can induce a rise in the magnitude of the electric-field noise generated by the surface of that film. We refer to this heat-induced rise in noise magnitude as a thermal transformation. The underlying physics of this thermal transformation process is explored through a series of heating, milling, and electron treatments performed on a single surface ion trap. Between these treatments, $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions trapped 70~$μ$m a…
We have reported the effect of pressure on the magnetization, and transport properties in the nominal composition Pr$_{2}$Ba$_{4}$Cu$_{7}$O$_{15-δ}$ synthesized by a sol-gel technique. A reduction treatment of the as-sintered sample in vacuum causes higher superconductivity achieving $T_{c,on}=\sim 30$ K for $δ=0.94$. Application of hydrostatic pressure on the oxygen depleted sample enhances its onset temperature up to 36 K at 1.2 GPa, indicating the nearly optimum doping level of the charge carrier in comparison to the pressure dependence of lower $T_{c}$ samples with $δ=0.45$. Seebeck coeffi…
A beam experiment is presented to study heterogeneous reactions relevant to plasma-surface interactions. Atom and ion beams are focused onto the sample to expose it to quantified beams of oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, noble gas ions and metal vapor. The heterogeneous surface processes are monitored in-situ and in real time by means of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Two examples illustrate the capabilities of the particle beam setup: oxidation and nitriding of aluminum as a model of target poisoning during reactive magnetron sputtering, and…
We construct a meta-generalized-gradient approximation which properly balances the nonlocality contributions to the exchange and correlation at the semilocal level. This non-empirical functional shows good accuracy for a broad palette of properties (thermochemistry, structural properties) and systems (molecules, metal clusters, surfaces and bulk solids). The accuracy for several well known problems in electronic structure calculations, such as the bending potential of the silver trimer and the dimensional crossover of anionic gold clusters, is also demonstrated. The inclusion of empirical disp…

Metal-Nb$_{2}$O$_{5-x}$-metal memdiodes exhibiting rectification, hysteresis, and capacitance are demonstrated for applications in neuromorphic circuitry. These devices do not require any post-fabrication treatments such as filament creation by electroforming that would impede circuit scalability. Instead these devices operate due to Poole-Frenkel defect controlled transport where the high defect density is inherent to the Nb$_{2}$O$_{5-x}$ deposition rather than post-fabrication treatments. Temperature dependent measurements reveal that the dominant trap energy is 0.22 eV suggesting it result…
