New ultra-hard rhombohedral B2N2 and BC2N - or hexagonal B6N6 and B3C6N3 - are derived from 3R graphite based on crystal chemistry rationale schematizing a mechanism for 2D => 3D transformation. Full unconstrained geometry optimizations leading to ground state energy structures and energy derived quantities as energy-volume equation of states (EOS) were based on computations within the density functional theory (DFT) with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for exchange-correlation (XC) effects. The new binary and ternary phases are characterized by tetrahedral stacking alike diamond, visualized with charge density representations, and illustrating ion characters. Atom averaged total energies are similar between cubic BN and rh-B2N2 on one hand, and larger stabilization of rhombohedral BC2N versus cubic and orthorhombic forms (in literature assessed from favored C-C and B-N bonding), on the other hand. The electronic band structures are characteristic of insulators with Egap ~ 5 eV. Both phases are characterized by large bulk and shear moduli and very high hardness values i.e. HV(rh-B2N2) = 74 GPa and HV(rh-BC2N) = 87 GPa.
A new ultra-hard rhombohedral carbon rh-C4 (or hexagonal h-C12) is reported as derived from 3R graphite through crystal chemistry construction and ground state energy within the density functional theory. An extended hexagonal three-dimensional network of h-C12 is formed of C4 tetrahedra alike in h-C4 lonsdaleite (hexagonal diamond). The electronic band structure of rh-C4 is characteristic of insulator with Egap = 4 eV similarly to diamond. From the set of elastic constants a larger value of bulk modulus versus lonsdaleite, and the largest Vickers hardness (HV) versus both forms of diamond wer…
Rhombohedral dense forms of carbon, rh-C2 (or hexagonal h-C6), and boron nitride, rh-BN (or hexagonal h-B3N3), are derived from rhombohedral 3R graphite based on original crystal chemistry scheme backed with full cell geometry optimization to minimal energy ground state computations within the quantum density functional theory. Considering throughout hexagonal settings featuring extended lattices, the calculation of the hexagonal set of elastic constants, provide results of large bulk moduli i.e. B0(rh-C2) = 438 GPa close to that of diamond, and B0(rh-BN) = 369 GPa close to that of cubic BN. Using first principle calculations under the framework of density functional theory we have investigated the electronic structure, magnetism and ferroelectric polarization in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet AgFeO2, and its comparison to the isostructural system CuFeO2. Our calculations reveal that spin orbit interaction plays an important role in determining the magnetic property of AgFeO2 and is possibly responsible for its different magnetic ground state in comparison to CuFeO2. Calculations of ferroelectric polarization of AgFeO2 suggest that the spontaneous polarization arises from …
Based on the relativistic spin-polarized density functional theory calculations we investigate the crystal structure, electronic and magnetic properties of a family MnPn2Ch4 compounds, where pnictogen metal atoms (Pn) are Sb and Bi; chalcogens (Ch) are Se, Te. We show that in the series the compounds of this family with heavier elements prefer to adopt rhombohedral crystal structure composed of weakly bonded septuple monoatomic layers while those with lighter elements tend to be in the monoclinic structure. Irrespective of the crystal structure all compounds of the MnPn2Ch4 series demonstrate …
Plane-wave pseudopotential methods and density functional perturbation theory are used to calculate the phonon density of states and thermodynamic functions of h-P4O10. The calculated vibrational spectrum is in good agreement with the measured spectrum, but the calculations indicate some modifications in the interpretation of the spectrum, mainly suggesting changes in the number of components used to fit a few of the observed peaks. The calculated low-temperature heat capacity is in good agreement with the measured heat capacity, with a systematic offset of approximately -5 J mol-1 K-1, indepe…
We present results from ab initio calculations of the mechanical properties of the rhombohedral phase (beta) of vanadium metal reported in recent experiments, and other predicted high-pressure phases (gamma and bcc), focusing on properties relevant to dynamic experiments. We find that the volume change associated with these transitions is small: no more than 0.15% (for beta - gamma). Calculations of the single crystal and polycrystal elastic moduli (stress-strain coefficients) reveal a remarkably small discontinuity in the shear modulus and other elastic properties across the phase transitions…
There has been a lot of excitement around the observation of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene, associated to flat bands close to the Fermi level. Such correlated electronic states also occur in multilayer rhombohedral stacked graphene (RG), which has been receiving increasing attention in the last years. In both natural and artificial samples however, multilayer stacked Bernal graphene (BG) occurs more frequently, making it desirable to determine what is their relative stability and under which conditions RG might be favored. Here, we study the energetics of BG and RG in bulk and …
Doped HfO2 and HfO2-ZrO2 compounds are gaining significant interest thanks to their ferroelectric properties in ultrathin films. Here, we show that ZrO2 could be a playground for doping and strain engineering to increase the thickness in epitaxial thin films. Based on surface energy considerations supported by ab initio calculations, we show that a pure ZrO2 epitaxial thin film exhibits a ferroelectric rhombohedral phase (r-phase, with R3m space group) more stable than for the Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) and pure HfO2 cases. In particular, for a thickness up to 37 nm we experimentally evidence a single…
From DFT based calculations establishing energy-volume equations of state and electron localization mapping, the electronic structure and crystal chemistry changes from Sn2TiO4 to Sn2TiO6 by oxidation are rationalized; the key effect being the destabilization of divalent tin SnII towards tetravalent state SnIV leading to rutile Sn2TiO6 as experimentally observed. The subsequent electronic structure change is highlighted in the relative change of the electronic band gap which increases from ~1eV up to 2.2 eV and the 1.5 times increase of the bulk modulus assigned to the change from covalently S…
A shell model for ferroelectric perovskites fitted to results of first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations is strongly affected by approximations made in the exchange-correlation functional within DFT, and in general not as accurate as a shell model derived from experimental data. We have developed an isotropic shell model for BaTiO3 based on the PBEsol exchange-correlation functional, which was specifically designed for crystal properties of solids. Our shell model for BaTiO3 agrees with groundstate DFT properties and the experimental lattice constants at finite temperatur…
We revisit the phase diagram of BaTiO$_3$ under biaxial strain using a first principles-based effective Hamiltonian approach. We show that, in addition to the tetragonal ($c$), quasi-rhombohedral ($r$), and quasi-orthorhombic ($aa$) ferroelectric phases, that have been discussed previously, there are temperature and strain regions, in particular under tensile strain, where the system decomposes into multi-domain structures. In such cases, the strained system, at least on a local level, recovers the same phase sequence as the unclamped bulk material. Furthermore, we extend these results from th…
Solid mercury in the rhombohedral structure is unbound within the self-consistent field (Hartree-Fock) approximation. The metallic binding is entirely due to electronic correlations. We determine the cohesive energy of solid mercury within an ab-initio many-body expansion for the correlation part. Electronic correlations in the $5d$ shell contribute about half to the cohesive energy. Relativistic effects are found to be very important. Very good agreement with the experimental value is obtained.
X-ray photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy are important techniques to characterize chemical bonding at surfaces and are often used to identify the strength and nature of adsorbate-substrate interactions. In this study, we judge the ability of x-ray spectroscopic techniques to identify different regimes of chemical bonding at metal-organic interfaces. To achieve this, we sample different interaction strength regimes in a comprehensive and systematic way by comparing two topological isomers, azulene and naphthalene, adsorbed on three metal substrates with varying reactivity, namely t…
The nonlinear optical properties and electro-optic effects of some oxygen-octahedric ferroelectrics are studied by the density functional theory (DFT) in the local density approximation (LDA) expressions based on first principle calculations without the scissor approximation. We present calculations of the frequency- dependent complex dielectric function and the second harmonic generation response coefficient \c{hi}(2)(-2ω,ω,ω) over a large frequency range in tetragonal and rhombohedral phases. The electronic linear electrooptic susceptibility \c{hi}(2) (-ω,ω,0) is also evaluated below the ban…
We report the first principles investigations on the phonons of three polytypes of BaTiO3 (BTO): paraelectric (PE) cubic Pm-3m and two ferroelectric (FE) phases, tetragonal P4mm and rhombohedral R3m. The phonon frequencies calculated using various exchange-correlation functionals, including density functional theory, Hartree-Fock approximation, and their hybrids were reviewed. The pressure-induced interplays between the modes form individual phases were explored by calculating the phonon modes as a function of pressure, P from -15 to 230 GPa. The pressure-sensitive modes of the FE phases showe…
In the substitutionally disordered narrow-gap semiconductor Pb_{1-x}Ge_xTe, a finite-temperature cubic-rhombohedral transition appears above a critical concentration $x \approx 0.005$. As a first step towards a first-principles investigation of this transition in the disordered system, a (hypothetical) ordered cubic Pb_3GeTe_4 supercell is studied. First principles density-functional calculations of total energies and linear response functions are performed using the conjugate-gradients method with ab initio pseudopotentials and a plane-wave basis set. Unstable modes in Pb_3GeTe_4 are found, d…
The amorphous phases of antimony oxide at three different oxidation levels have been investigated by {\it ab initio} molecular-dynamics calculations using a simulated `melt-quench' approach. The atomic and electronic structure of the amorphous phases are analyzed and compared to their crystalline counterparts. The amorphous structure of the trioxide ({\it a\,}--Sb$_2$O$_3$) resembles the $β$-phase of the crystalline form (valentinite), in agreement with previous observations. In the relaxed athermal structure, however, more senarmontite-like structural features are apparent. The phase diagram …
The stereochemistry of 6s2 (E) lone pair of divalent Pb and trivalent Bi (PbII and BiIII designated by M*) in structurally related PbO, PbFX (X= Cl, Br, I), BiOX (X= F, Cl, Br, I) and Bi2NbO5F is rationalized. The lone pair LP presence determined by its sphere of influence E, equal to those of oxygen or fluorine anions, was settled by its center then giving M*-E directions and distances. Detailed description of structural features of both elements in the title compounds characterized by [PbEO]n and [BiEO]n layers allowed to show the evolution of M*-E distance versus the changes with the square…
A general set of methods is presented for calculating chemical potentials in solid and liquid mixtures using {\em ab initio} techniques based on density functional theory (DFT). The methods are designed to give an {\em ab initio} approach to treating chemical equilibrium between coexisting solid and liquid solutions, and particularly the partitioning ratio of solutes between such solutions. For the liquid phase, the methods are based on the general technique of thermodynamic integration, applied to calculate the change of free energy associated with the continuous interconversion of solvent an…
The results of magnetic investigations on a new series of compounds, Mn2R3Sb3O14, containing 2-dimensional Kagome lattice of R ions and belonging to pyrochlore series, are presented. Crystallographic features of light R members (R= La, Pr and Nd) of this family, as established in the recent literature, have been reported to be novel in many respects, in particular, the rhomohedral nature of the structure which is rare among pyrochlores. It was also reported that, as the R becomes heavier, beyond R= Sm, the fraction of well-known cubic pyrochlore phase tends to gradually dominate. Here, we repo…
Graphene oxide is a rising star among 2D materials, yet its interaction with liquid water remains a fundamentally open question: experimental characterization at the atomic scale is difficult, and modelling by classical approaches cannot properly describe chemical reactivity. Here, we bridge the gap between simple computational models and complex experimental systems, by realistic first-principles molecular simulations of graphene oxide (GO) in liquid water. We construct chemically accurate GO models and study their behavior in water, showing that oxygen-bearing functional groups (hydroxyl and…
We discuss the feasibility of the embedded cluster approach for it ab-initio calculations of charge exchange between ions and a LiF surface. We show that the discrete density of valence states in embedded clusters converges towards the continuum limit of the density of states in the valence band of an infinitely extended LiF surface. Screening of the holes that are left in the surface after electron transfer to the projectile plays an important role for the correct level ordering in the calculation of potential energy surfaces. We discuss to which extent the hole screening is taken into accoun…
The formation energy of the interface between face-centered cubic (fcc) and hexagonal close packed (hcp) structures is a key parameter in determining the stacking fault energy (SFE) of fcc metals and alloys using thermodynamic calculations. Often the contribution of the planar fault energy to the SFE has the same order of magnitude as the bulk part, and thus the lack of a precise information about it can become the limiting factor in thermodynamic predictions. Here, we differentiate between the actual interfacial energy for the coherent fcc(111)/hcp(0001) interface and the "pseudo-interfacial …
The quasiparticle bands of diamond, a prototype covalent insulator, are herein studied by means of wave-function electronic-structure theory, with emphasis on the nature of the correlation hole around a bare particle. Short-range correlations are in such a system conveniently described by using a real-space representation and many-body techniques from {\it ab initio} quantum chemistry. To account for long-range polarization effects, on the other hand, we adopt the approximation of a dielectric continuum. Having as "uncorrelated" reference the Hartree-Fock band structure, the post-Hartree-Fock …
Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), a ZrO2-Y2O3 solid solution that contains a large population of oxygen vacancies, is widely used in energy and industrial applications. Past computational studies correctly predicted the anion diffusivity but not the cation diffusivity, which is important for material processing and stability. One of the challenges lies in identifying a plausible configuration akin to the ground state in a glassy landscape. This is unlikely to come from random sampling of even a very large sample space, but the odds are much improved by incorporating packing preferences reveale…
We identify the shortcomings of existing ab initio quantum chemistry calculations for the hyperfine couplings in the recently characterized azafullerene, C59N. Standard gaussian basis sets in the context of all--electron calculations are insufficient to resolve the spin density near the cores of the atoms. Using the Projector Augmented Wave method implemented on top of a standard pseudopotential plane--wave density--functional framework, we compute significantly more accurate values for the Fermi contact interaction.
Water is of the utmost importance for life and technology. However, a genuinely predictive ab initio model of water has eluded scientists. We demonstrate that a fully ab initio approach, relying on the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) density functional, provides such a description of water. SCAN accurately describes the balance among covalent bonds, hydrogen bonds, and van der Waals interactions that dictates the structure and dynamics of liquid water. Notably, SCAN captures the density difference between water and ice I{\it h} at ambient conditions, as well as many import…
Effect of substitution La by Mg on electrochemical and electronic properties in La$_{2-x}$Mg$_x$Ni$_7$ alloys: a combined experimental and ab initio studies
We present a new approach for numerical solutions of ab initio quantum chemistry systems. The main idea of the approach, which we call canonical diagonalization, is to diagonalize directly the second quantized Hamiltonian by a sequence of numerical canonical transformations.
We present IrRep - a Python code that calculates the symmetry eigenvalues of electronic Bloch states in crystalline solids and the irreducible representations under which they transform. As input it receives bandstructures computed with state-of-the-art Density Functional Theory codes such as VASP, Quantum Espresso, or Abinit, as well as any other code that has an interface to Wannier90. Our code is applicable to materials in any of the 230 space groups and double groups preserving time-reversal symmetry with or without spin-orbit coupling included, for primitive or conventional unit cells. Molecular adsorbates on metal surfaces exchange energy with substrate phonons and low-lying electron-hole pair excitations. In the limit of weak coupling, electron-hole pair excitations can be seen as exerting frictional forces on adsorbates that enhance energy transfer and facilitate vibrational relaxation or hot-electron mediated chemistry. We have recently reported on the relevance of tensorial properties of electronic friction [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 217601 (2016)] in dynamics at surfaces. Here we present the underlying implementation of tensorial electronic friction based on Kohn-Sham Dens…
