There has been a lot of excitement around the observation of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene, associated to flat bands close to the Fermi level. Such correlated electronic states also occur in multilayer rhombohedral stacked graphene (RG), which has been receiving increasing attention in the last years. In both natural and artificial samples however, multilayer stacked Bernal graphene (BG) occurs more frequently, making it desirable to determine what is their relative stability and under which conditions RG might be favored. Here, we study the energetics of BG and RG in bulk and also multilayer stacked graphene using first-principles calculations. It is shown that the electronic temperature, not accounted for in previous studies, plays a crucial role in determining which phase is preferred. We also show that the low energy states at room temperature consist of BG, RG and mixed BG-RG systems with a particular type of interface. Energies of all stacking sequences (SSs) are calculated for N = 12 layers, and an Ising model is used to fit them, which can be used for larger N as well. In this way, the ordering of low energy SSs can be determined and analyzed in terms of a few parameters. Our work clarifies inconsistent results in the literature, and sets the basis to studying the effect of external factors on the stability of multilayer graphene systems in first principles calculations.
Horizontal shifts in the top layer of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite, induced by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip, are presented. Excellent agreement is found between STM images and those simulated using density functional theory. First-principle calculations identify that the low-energy barrier direction of the top layer displacement is toward a structure where none of the carbon pz orbitals overlap, while the high-energy barrier direction is toward AA stacking. Each directional shift yields a real-space surface charge density similar to graphene; however the low-energy barrier d…
Multi-layer graphene with rhombohedral stacking is a promising carbon phase possibly displaying correlated states like magnetism or superconductivity due to the occurrence of a flat surface band at the Fermi level. Recently, flakes of thickness up to 17 layers were tentatively attributed ABC sequences although the Raman fingerprint of rhombohedral multilayer graphene is currently unknown and the 2D resonant Raman spectrum of Bernal graphite not understood. We provide a first principles description of the 2D Raman peak in three and four layers graphene (all stackings) as well as in Bernal, rhom…
Tunneling atomic force microscopy (TUNA) was used at ambient conditions to measure the current-voltage ($I$-$V$) characteristics at clean surfaces of highly oriented graphite samples with Bernal and rhombohedral stacking orders. The characteristic curves measured on Bernal-stacked graphite surfaces can be understood with an ordinary self-consistent semiconductor modeling and quantum mechanical tunneling current derivations. We show that the absence of a voltage region without measurable current in the $I$-$V$ spectra is not a proof of the lack of an energy band gap. It can be induced by a surf…
Graphite crystals used to prepare graphene-based heterostructures are generally assumed to be defect free. We report here scanning tunneling microscopy results that show graphite commonly used to prepare graphene devices can contain a significant amount of native defects. Extensive scanning of the surface allows us to determine the concentration of native defects to be 6.6$\times$10$^8$ cm$^{-2}$. We further study the effects of these native defects on the electronic properties of Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene. We observe gate-dependent intravalley scattering and successfully compare our exp…
We have studied the resistivity of a large number of highly oriented graphite samples with areas ranging from several mm$^2$ to a few $μ$m$^2$ and thickness from $\sim 10 $nm to several tens of micrometers. The measured resistance can be explained by the parallel contribution of semiconducting graphene layers with low carrier density $< 10^9$ cm$^{-2}$ and the one from metallic-like internal interfaces. The results indicate that ideal graphite with Bernal stacking structure is a narrow-gap semiconductor with an energy gap $E_g \sim 40 $meV.
The double-resonance (DR) Raman process is a signature of all sp2 carbon material and provide fundamental information of the electronic structure and phonon dispersion in graphene, carbon nanotubes and different graphite-type materials. We have performed in this work the study of different DR Raman bands of rhombohedral graphite using five different excitation laser energies and obtained the dispersion of the different DR features by changing the laser energy. Results are compared with those of Bernal graphite and shows that rhombohedral graphite exhibit a richer DR Raman spectrum. For example…
Novel systems of layered graphene are attracting interest for theories and applications. The stability, band structures of few-layer graphite films, and their dependence on electric field applied along the c-axis are examined within the density functional theory. We predict that those of Bernal type and also rhombohedral type tri- and tetra-layer graphite films exhibit stability. The rhombohedral-type systems including AB-bilayer, show variable band gap induced by perpendicular electric field, whereas the other systems such as the Bernal-type films stay semi-metallic.
Surface superconductivity in rhombohedral graphite is a robust phenomenon which can exist even when higher order hoppings between the layers lift the topological protection of the surface flat band and introduce a quadratic dispersion of electrons with a heavy effective mass. We show that for weak pairing interaction, the flat band character of the surface superconductivity transforms into a BCS-like relation with high critical temperature characterized by a higher coupling constant due to a much larger density of states than in the bulk. Our results offer an explanation for the recent finding…
The discovery of superconductivity and correlated electronic states in the flat bands of twisted bilayer graphene has raised a lot of excitement. Flat bands also occur in multilayer graphene flakes that present rhombohedral (ABC) stacking order on many consecutive layers. Although Bernal-stacked (AB) graphene is more stable, long-range ABC-ordered flakes involving up to 50 layers have been surprisingly observed in natural samples. Here we present a microscopic atomistic model, based on first-principles density functional theory calculations, that demonstrates how shear stress can produce long-…
The electrical, in-plane resistance as a function of temperature $R(T)$ of bulk and mesoscopic thin graphite flakes obtained from the same batch was investigated. Samples thicker than $\sim 30$ nm show metalliclike contribution in a temperature range that increases with the sample thickness, whereas a semiconductinglike behavior was observed for thinner samples. The temperature dependence of the in-plane resistance of all measured samples and several others from literature can be very well explained between 2 K and 1100 K assuming three contributions in parallel: a metalliclike conducting path…
Few layer graphene (FLG) has been recently intensively investigated for its variable electronic properties defined by a local atomic arrangement. While the most natural layers arrangement in FLG is ABA (Bernal) stacking, a metastable ABC (rhombohedral) stacking characterized by a relatively high energy barrier can also occur. When both stacking occur in the same FLG device this results in in-plane heterostructure with a domain wall (DW). We show that ABC stacking in FLG can be controllably and locally turned into ABA stacking by two following approaches. In the first approach, Joule heating wa…
We investigate the competition between acoustic-phonon-mediated superconductivity and the long-range Coulomb interaction in moiréless graphene multilayers, specifically, Bernal bilayer graphene, rhombohedral trilayer graphene, and ABCA-stacked tetralayer graphene. In these graphene multilayers, the acoustic phonons can realize, through electron-phonon coupling, both spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairings, and the intra-sublattice pairings ($s$-wave spin-singlet and $f$-wave spin-triplet) are the dominant channels. Our theory naturally explains the distinct recent experimental findings in Berna…
We show that rhombohedral graphite may support surface superconductivity with an unusual relation between the BCS coupling constant and the order parameter. This feature results from the properties of the states localized on the graphite surfaces. In a description including only the nearest neighbour coupling of the graphene layers, the surface states are topologically protected and have a flat band dispersion. We show that including higher order couplings destroys this flat band character and leads to a particle-hole symmetry breaking quadratic dispersion with a large effective mass. Employin…
We apply the mean-field Hartree Fock theory of gapped electronic states at charge neutrality in bilayer graphene to thin films of rhombohedral graphite with up to thirty layers. For the ground state, the order parameter (the separation of bands at the valley center) saturates to a constant non-zero value as the layer number increases, whereas the band gap decreases with layer number. We consider chiral symmetry breaking disorder in the form of random layer potentials and chiral preserving disorder in the form of random values of the interlayer coupling. The former reduces the magnitude of the …
Trilayer graphene (TLG) exhibits rich novel electronic properties and extraordinary quantum Hall phenomena owning to enhanced electronic interactions and tunable chirality of its quasiparticles. Here, we report direct observation of chirality transition of quasiparticles at stacking solitons of TLG via spatial-resolved Landau level spectroscopy. The one-dimensional stacking solitons with width of the order of 10 nm separate adjacent Bernal-stacked TLG and rhombohedral-stacked TLG. By using high field tunneling spectra of scanning tunneling microscopy, we measured Landau quantization in both th…
Few-layer graphene (FLG) has been predicted to exist in various crystallographic stacking sequences, which can strongly influence the electronic properties of FLG. We demonstrate an accurate and efficient method to characterize stacking order in FLG using the distinctive features of the Raman 2D-mode. Raman imaging allows us to visualize directly the spatial distribution of Bernal (ABA) and rhombohedral (ABC) stacking in tri- and tetra-layer graphene. We find that 15% of exfoliated graphene tri- and tetra-layers is comprised of micron-sized domains of rhombohedral stacking, rather than of usua…
Low-energy electronic properties of ABC-stacked graphite are studied by the tight-binding model. There are linear and parabolic bands with and without degeneracy. They show strongly anisotropic dispersions. ABC-stacked grahite is a semimetal due to slight overlapping near the Fermi level beween conduction and valence bands. The interlayer interactions could change the energy dispersion, state degeneracy, and positions of band-crossing and band-edge state. Density of states exhibit a shoulder structure, owing to band-edge states near or at high symmetric points. Low-frequency Coulomb excitation…
The existence of strong trigonal warping around the K point for the low energy electronic states in multilayer (N$\geq$2) graphene films and graphite is well established. It is responsible for phenomena such as Lifshitz transitions and anisotropic ballistic transport. The absolute orientation of the trigonal warping with respect to the center of the Brillouin zone is however not agreed upon. Here, we use quasiparticle scattering experiments on a gated bilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride heterostructure to settle this disagreement. We compare Fourier transforms of scattering interference m…
We review progress in developing epitaxial graphene as a material for carbon electronics. In particular, improvements in epitaxial graphene growth, interface control and the understanding of multilayer epitaxial graphene's electronic properties are discussed. Although graphene grown on both polar faces of SiC is addressed, our discussions will focus on graphene grown on the (000-1) C-face of SiC. The unique properties of C-face multilayer epitaxial graphene have become apparent. These films behave electronically like a stack of nearly independent graphene sheets rather than a thin Bernal-stack…
Rhombohedral dense forms of carbon, rh-C2 (or hexagonal h-C6), and boron nitride, rh-BN (or hexagonal h-B3N3), are derived from rhombohedral 3R graphite based on original crystal chemistry scheme backed with full cell geometry optimization to minimal energy ground state computations within the quantum density functional theory. Considering throughout hexagonal settings featuring extended lattices, the calculation of the hexagonal set of elastic constants, provide results of large bulk moduli i.e. B0(rh-C2) = 438 GPa close to that of diamond, and B0(rh-BN) = 369 GPa close to that of cubic BN. T…
The intrinsic values of the carriers mobility and density of the graphene layers inside graphite, the well known structure built on these layers in the Bernal stacking configuration, are not well known mainly because most of the research was done in rather bulk samples where lattice defects hide their intrinsic values. By measuring the electrical resistance through microfabricated constrictions in micrometer small graphite flakes of a few tens of nanometers thickness we studied the ballistic behavior of the carriers. We found that the carriers' mean free path is micrometer large with a mobilit…
A new ultra-hard rhombohedral carbon rh-C4 (or hexagonal h-C12) is reported as derived from 3R graphite through crystal chemistry construction and ground state energy within the density functional theory. An extended hexagonal three-dimensional network of h-C12 is formed of C4 tetrahedra alike in h-C4 lonsdaleite (hexagonal diamond). The electronic band structure of rh-C4 is characteristic of insulator with Egap = 4 eV similarly to diamond. From the set of elastic constants a larger value of bulk modulus versus lonsdaleite, and the largest Vickers hardness (HV) versus both forms of diamond wer…
Rhombohedral-stacked few-layer graphene (FLG) has been receiving an ever-increasing attention owing to its peculiar electronic properties that could lead to enticing phenomena such as superconductivity and magnetic ordering. Up to now, experimental studies on such material have been mainly limited by the difficulty in isolating it in thickness exceeding 3 atomic layers with device-compatible size. In this work, rhombohedral graphene with thickness up to 9 layers and areas up to ~50 micrometers square is grown via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on suspended Cu foils and transferred onto target…
We demonstrate that surface relaxation, which is insignificant in trilayer graphene, starts to manifest in Bernal-stacked tetralayer graphene. Bernal-stacked few-layer graphene has been investigated by analyzing its Landau level spectra through quantum capacitance measurements. We find that in trilayer graphene, the interlayer interaction parameters were similar to that of graphite. However, in tetralayer graphene, the hopping parameters between the bulk and surface bilayers are quite different. This shows a direct evidence for the surface relaxation phenomena. In spite of the fact that the Va…
We have obtained bulk samples of the graphite intercalation compound, CaC6, by a novel method of synthesis from highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. The crystal structure has been completely determined showing that it is the only member of the MC6, metal-graphite compounds, which has rhombohedral symmetry. We have clearly shown the occurrence of superconductivity in the bulk sample at 11.5K, using magnetization measurements.

New ultra-hard rhombohedral B2N2 and BC2N - or hexagonal B6N6 and B3C6N3 - are derived from 3R graphite based on crystal chemistry rationale schematizing a mechanism for 2D => 3D transformation. Full unconstrained geometry optimizations leading to ground state energy structures and energy derived quantities as energy-volume equation of states (EOS) were based on computations within the density functional theory (DFT) with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for exchange-correlation (XC) effects. The new binary and ternary phases are characterized by tetrahedral stacking alike diamond, vis…
The crystal structure of a material plays an important role in determining its electronic properties. Changing from one crystal structure to another involves a phase transition which is usually controlled by a state variable such as temperature or pressure. In the case of trilayer graphene, there are two common stacking configurations (Bernal and rhombohedral) which exhibit very different electronic properties. In graphene flakes with both stacking configurations, the region between them consists of a localized strain soliton where the carbon atoms of one graphene layer shift by the carbon-car…
In recent times, trilayer graphene has attracted wide attention owing to its stacking and electric field dependent electronic properties. However, a direct and well-resolved experimental visualization of its band structure has not yet been reported. In this work, we present angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data which show with high resolution the electronic band structure of trilayer graphene obtained on α-SiC(0001) and β-SiC(111) via hydrogen intercalation. Electronic bands obtained from tight-binding calculations are fitted to the experimental data to extract the interatomic…
A DFT-based investigation of rhombohedral (ABC)-type graphene stacks in finite static electric fields is presented. Electronic band structures and field-induced charge densities are compared with related literature data as well as with own results on (AB) stacks. It is found, that the undoped AB-bilayer has a tiny Fermi line consisting of one electron pocket around the K-point and one hole pocket on the line K-$Γ$. In contrast to (AB) stacks, the breaking of translational symmetry by the surface of finite (ABC) stacks produces a gap in the bulk-like states for slabs up to a yet unknown critica…
Graphene, defined as a single atomic plane of graphite, is a semimetal with small overlap between the valence and the conduction bands. The stacking of graphene up to several atomic layers can produce diverse physical properties, depending on the stacking way. The bilayer graphene is also a semimetal, adopting the AB-stacked (or Bernal-stacked) structure or the rare AA-stacked structure. The trilayer or a few layer graphene (FLG) can be semimetal or semiconductor, depending on whether it takes Bernal (ABA) stacking or rhombohedral (ABC) stacking. We will give a perspective on the recent two mi…
Electronic properties of bilayer and multilayer graphene have generally been interpreted in terms of AB or Bernal stacking. However, it is known that many types of stacking defects can occur in natural and synthetic graphite; rotation of the top layer is often seen in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies of graphite. In this paper we consider a graphene bilayer with a relative small angle rotation between the layers and calculate the electronic structure near zero energy in a continuum approximation. Contrary to what happens in a AB stacked bilayer and in accord with observations in epi…
The electronic structure of few-layer graphene (FLG) samples with crystalline order was investigated experimentally by infrared absorption spectroscopy for photon energies ranging from 0.2 - 1 eV. Distinct optical conductivity spectra were observed for different samples having precisely the same number of layers. The different spectra arise from the existence of two stable polytypes of FLG, namely, Bernal (AB) stacking and rhombohedral (ABC) stacking. The observed absorption features, reflecting the underlying symmetry of the two polytypes and the nature of the associated van Hone singularitie…
Topological properties of electronic states in multivalley two-dimensional materials, such as mono- and bilayer graphene, or thin films of rhombohedral graphite, give rise to various unusual magneto-transport regimes. Here, we investigate the tunability of the topological magnetic moment (related to the Berry curvature) of electronic states in bilayer graphene using strain and vertical bias. We show how one can controllably vary the valley $g$-factor of the band-edge electrons, $g_v^*$, across the range $10 < |g_v^*| < 200$, and we discuss the manifestations of the topological magnetic moment …
Despite the structures and properties of tilt grain boundaries of graphite surface and graphene have been extensively studied, their effect on the structures and electronic spectra of graphene layers has not been fully addressed. Here we study effects of one-dimensional tilt grain boundaries on structures and electronic spectra of graphene multilayers by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. A tilt grain boundary of a top graphene sheet in graphene multilayers leads to a twist between consecutive layers and generates superstructures (Moiré patterns) on one side of the boundary. Our r…
We report a nano-infrared (IR) imaging study of trilayer graphene (TLG) with both ABA (Bernal) and ABC (rhombohedral) stacking orders using the scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM). With s-SNOM operating in the mid-IR region, we mapped in real space the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) of ABA-TLG and ABC-TLG, which are tunable with electrical gating. Through quantitative modeling of the plasmonic imaging data, we found that the plasmon wavelength of ABA-TLG is significantly larger than that of ABC-TLG, resulting in a sizable impedance mismatch and hence a strong pla…
The crystallographic stacking order in multilayer graphene plays an important role in determining its electronic structure. In trilayer graphene, rhombohedral stacking (ABC) is particularly intriguing, exhibiting a flat band with an electric-field tunable band gap. Such electronic structure is distinct from simple hexagonal stacking (AAA) or typical Bernal stacking (ABA), and is promising for nanoscale electronics, optoelectronics applications. So far clean experimental electronic spectra on the first two stackings are missing because the samples are usually too small in size (um or nm scale) …
We calculate the theoretical contribution to the doping and temperature ($T$) dependence of electrical resistivity due to scattering by acoustic phonons in Bernal bilayer graphene (BBG) and rhombohedral trilayer graphene (RTG). We focus on the role of nontrivial geometric features of the detailed, anisotropic $k\cdot p$ band structures of these systems - e.g. Van Hove singularities, Lifshitz transitions, Fermi surface anisotropy, and band curvature near the gap - whose effects on transport have not yet been systematically studied. We find that these geometric features strongly influence the te…
We compute and discuss the electronic band structure and excitonic dispersion of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in the single layer configuration and in three bulk polymorphs (usual AA' stacking, Bernal AB, and rhombohedral ABC). We focus on the changes in the electronic band structure and the exciton dispersion induced by the atomic configuration and the electron-hole interaction. Calculations are carried out on the level of \textit{ab initio} many-body perturbation theory (GW and Bethe Salpeter equation) and by means of an appropriate tight-binding model. We confirm the change from direct to …
Moiré superlattices in van der Waals heterostructures are gaining increasing attention because they offer new opportunities to tailor and explore unique electronic phenomena when stacking 2D materials with small twist angles. Here, we reveal local surface potentials associated with stacking domains in twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) moiré superlattices. Using a combination of both lateral Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (LPFM) and Scanning Kelvin Probe Microscopy (SKPM), we distinguish between Bernal (ABAB) and rhombohedral (ABCA) stacked graphene and directly correlate these stacking co…
